The Port of Beaumont – Celebrating 100 Years of Service Since 1908, Beaumont has had a deep water port linking Southeast Texas to the world. In 1916 the port began to take on something of the shape we know today. The channel was deepened to 25 feet. A turning basin was created in a bend of the river. Local businessmen created dock facilities along the waterfront. From this facility, we could send our timber, grain, and cotton out across the globe. In 2016, The Port of Beaumont is celebrating its 100th anniversary. We encourage the whole community to celebrate with them. To a large degree, the story of their success is the story of the region’s success. The Port of Beaumont is a major economic engine regionally, nationally, and globally. If you’re making money in The Golden Triangle’s commercial sector, the port is behind the scenes smoothing the way across industries: petrochemical, construction, military, agriculture, timber, alternative energy, and automotive. The mission of The Port of Beaumont is straight forward – to improve ease of navigation and to develop maritime shipping and waterborne related commerce.
The Port of Beaumont is part of the SabineNeches Waterway which is the number one import route of crude oil by ship in the country. Looking Forward with Regina Lindsey
!Ʒ-ð, As President of the Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce, Regina Lindsey is in a great position to keep her finger on the pulse of the commercial sector in Southeast Texas. Regina Lindsey comes to the Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce with a strong background in economic development for the community of Silsbee and for the Greenspoint Special Purpose Development District in Houston. We sat down with her to get a feel for the factors that will drive our Golden Triangle commercial and industrial growth in the near future. Lindsey began by expressing her excitement about the expansion of the Sabine Neches Navigation District. Often, rivers and canals are referred to as arteries of regional commerce. That is certainly the case with our Sabine Neches Navigation District. The system transports oil, natural gas, timber, grain, industrial expansion materials, and the components for the nation’s renewable energy future.
d , Ʒ 1
Lindsey, like many across Southeast Texas, is happy to share news about the status of the project to deepen the Sabine Neches waterway. The Water Resource Development Act has been approved and the process for securing appropriations for the work has begun. The project will allow The Golden Triangle to continue growing their position as a major shipping hub with regional benefits that will include: • • • • • • • •
Allowing larger ships to reach local ports Better management of waterway traffic Taking advantage of Panama Canal expansion Keep Southeast Texas competitive with other U.S. ports Maintain current jobs and create new jobs Increase tax revenue Stimulate economic development across The Golden Triangle Secure Southeast Texas’ future as America’s Energy Gateway and the nation’s largest military out-load port
The last significant improvement project to the Sabine Neches Navigation District was in 1962. During the five decades that have passed since then, the size of ships moving products across the world have grown significantly. To maintain and grow our share of the global shipping pie, it is time to update our infrastructure. One of the key benefits of the initiative is the creation of thousands of high paying jobs. These jobs will not only be active during the construction phase. A number of new long-term positions will also be created due to the increased traffic that the project will bring. For decades to come, the improvement of the Sabine Neches Waterway will be a key factor driving the momentum of the commercial and industrial sector in The Golden Triangle. The next factor Regina Lindsey is excited about is the forward momentum of BISD. While it may be a while before the lingering effects of previous issues fade away, the future looks genuinely promising.

With a strong new superintendent and a Board of Administrators who have a well-documented history of strong community leadership, a new era is truly underway. For the first time in a long time, Lindsey and others in the community are comfortable encouraging companies exploring a move to Beaumont that the schools are in good hands. Like many in Southeast Texas, Lindsey is touting the benefits that will come with Lamar University’s new CICE Program or the Center for Innovation, Commercialization, and Entrepreneurship. The 21,000 foot building for the program will be located next to the new Lamar administration building. The facility will include offices, labs, meeting space, training rooms, and a new event center. One of the biggest issues we hear at The Southeast Texas Commercial Real Estate Magazine is a frustration voiced by local employers that it is so difficult to find the skilled workers they need – engineers, project managers, and IT professionals. The program is also projected to assist with key medical professional needs including speech pathology and nursing. The Lamar CICE program is being designed specifically to help bridge that gap between the need for skilled workers and the development of that workforce from within the community. The program is actually a partnership between the university community and the Golden Triangle business community. If you have a special need, a meeting with the CICE team can be a first step towards a longterm solution. The new CICE building on the corner of Rolfe Christopher Drive and Jim Gilligan Way on Lamar University’s south end is projected to open in 2017. By 2019, the CICE program should be attracting companies from overseas who are seeking a “soft landing” in The United States. Essentially, they will be able to start the process of setting up operations in The Golden Triangle through the program. CICE will provide temporary office and lab space, introductions to potential partners in The Golden Triangle business community, and can even assist in training students on any special skills needed to assist the new company in flourishing right here in Southeast Texas. CICE should solve a wide range of issues facing the community: training a skilled workforce, allowing companies to partner more effectively with The University, giving innovators a place to incubate their inventions and ideas, and attracting new employers to the region. When the facility is firing on all cylinders, it should give The Golden Triangle a platform to invent and develop its own future. Regina Lindsey and her team are seeing strong interest from companies exploring a move into The Golden Triangle. They site our region’s strong GDP, economic base, and skilled labor force as attractive factors they examine in the process of choosing a new expansion market or area for their company headquarters. They are also attracted to our reasonable cost of living. Projections show that our region will see over $50 billion dollars in commercial and industrial projects over the coming ten years. These projects include expansions at Air Liquide, Phillips 66, OCI, and many more. Regina Lindsey and The Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce are excited for 2016 and beyond. For the commercial and industrial sectors in Southeast Texas, the future looks bright indeed. Heart Ball
“The Heart Ball is an opportunity for us to celebrate the heart community in Beaumont –our doctors, our donors, our volunteers, our survivors, and also the ones we’ve lost to heart disease or stroke,” said Rhonda Oszczakiewicz, co-chair of the event. “Thanks to that community, we have seen 50 straight years of success in fighting America’s number 1 killer, heart disease, and the need for our continued work is unquestionable.” Last year, nation-wide the Heart Ball campaign raised over $51 million, allowing the American Heart Association to fund more cardiovascular research than any other organization in the country, second only to the federal government. The Golden Triangle Heart Ball attracts several hundred of the area’s community leaders in medicine and business and is the AHA’s premiere fundraising event in the region. Have you worked with Tom Neild professionally or in the public service arena? Share this special evening with Tom and his family. Purchase a ticket or a table and support the 2016 Heart Ball.
