Rick Uptergrove - Manager 1441 West Hwy. 70 • Plainview • 806-889-3400

For many of us, the day doesn’t begin without breakfast. Fortunately, it’s breakfast time 24 hours a day at IHOP. And savory biscuits and gravy are just part of the breakfast menu, followed by a tempting variety of lunch and dinner items. IHOP’s extensive menu has something for everyone including special sections for kids and seniors. For starters, there are original pancakes along with variations that include fruit compote, chocolate chips or nuts and grains. Or try a hearty omelette like the Bacon Temptation. Want something healthy? Try the Spinach and Mushroom or create your own unique omelette. The Biscuits & Gravy Combo includes two fluffy buttermilk biscuits topped with four sausage links and country gravy served with two eggs and hash browns. For dinner, you can tie into a T-Bone steak cooked to order, or savor a Tilapia Florentine, tilapia on a bed of spinach and Alfredo served with mashed potatoes and garlic bread. Finish with an item from their dessert menu such as fruit crepe, crowned with vanilla ice cream and real fruit topping like cool strawberry, warm blueberry or cinnamon apple compote finished with a flourish of whipped topping. IHOP beverages range from a hearty cup of coffee and or refreshing ice tea to Splashberry, a blend of IHOP’s juicy, red strawberries, lemon-lime soda and premium orange juice. Open in Plainview since 2006, IHOP employs 45 friendly staff members who will see to it that your coffee cup stays full. “We’d like to say thank you to everyone who voted for us, and we greatly appreciate your business,” said Manager Tiffany Whalen.

Recent weather-related problems in our community, including major hail damage, have reminded all of us that it’s important for our homes and vehicles to be fully insured. And, of course, none of us should ever take our health or our lives for granted. In business since 2005, State Farm Agent Jan Alford enjoys spending time with her customers and is happy to provide free insurance quotes for those looking for coverage. “I enjoy finding out the best way for State Farm to meet their needs,” Jan said. A graduate of West Texas State University, Jan has been active in the Plainview community for more than 25 years. She is a member of the Plainview Chamber of Commerce and the Plainview/Hale County Industrial Foundation. Along with three staff members, Jan provides a full range of State Farm Insurance products including auto insurance, home and property insurance, life insurance, health insurance and annuities. Jan’s State Farm website helps customers to manage their accounts, plan a move and change their address. Plus, there’s simple information on how to get the insurance coverage you need. The Learning Resource Center under Customer Care offers tips for vehicle maintenance, family care from babies to aging parents, finances, buying, insuring and maintaining your home, and vehicle safety. You can also use the website to file a claim, check your claim status, find a repair facility and report insurance fraud. “I appreciate Plainview’s support and confidence in myself and State Farm,” Jan said.

Amigos United is golden when it comes to deli, meat, produce and supermarket products. And they also step up at the bakery and at the cashier’s register. Amigos has been part of Plainview since 2000, and a number of their 175 employees go back further than that, having worked at the United Store that was formerly located across the street from Amigos. “Customer service is our No. 1 key,” said Store Director Will Prince. “Being the best store in town is our goal.” Will said the average customer count in a week is about 18,300, and every customer is treated the same. Dorothy Green, who received the Silver award for best grocery cashier, has been employed at Amigos since the store opened. “She’s a great person who really cares about our guests,” Will said. The store’s deli, where everything is made fresh every day, is a popular place to pick up breakfast lunch and dinner. Assistant Meat Market Manager Brook Mickey reminds customers that they can get their meat cut up and packaged to order at the meat counter. “We can custom cut steaks as you want them, cut up chicken and season the meat,” Brook said. “It doesn’t have to be just what’s on the counter. If you’re looking for 50 pounds of hamburger or cutting up chuck for stew meat or chili meat, we can do that for you.” Amigos is open from 6 a.m. till 11 p.m. seven days a week. “We’re grateful to the people of Plainview and the surrounding area for supporting us through the years. Thank you for voting for us,” Will said.

WBU Bookstore Eddie Turner, store manager 806-291-3615 1900 W. Seventh Street

It is the role of a university bookstore to order the books in the syllabus and make sure that they’re available to buy, sell or rent in new or used condition. The WBU Bookstore does all that – and much more. “We have the best gift store in Plainview,” said Eddie Turner, store manager. Eddie, who has been at the bookstore for 41 years, said the store was very different when he became store manager in 1974. “We had a small closet with books,” he said. “We had no computers, no point-of-purchase system. We’ve come a long way.” Popular lines of candles can be found at the bookstore, along with Precious Moments and Willow Tree figurines, frames and all kinds of décor. Different kinds of jewelry including Wayland jewelry, Christian jewelry such as the Wayland jewelry, the Spirit of Truth brand and sterling silver jewelry is also available. “We have a lot of Wayland imprinted things, such as mugs, key rings, and beverage dispensers,” Eddie said. “We probably have 30 different T-shirts, and 15 to 20 different sweatshirts, caps and jackets.” Book lovers will feel right at home among the large selection of Christian and popular books, including Bibles and commentaries. The bookstore will gift-wrap anything over $10 for free, and they will engrave names on Bibles, portfolios, binders and “Jesus Calling” devotional books. Items purchased at the bookstore are engraved for free. WBU Bookstore is located in the McClung University Center. “Visit our website or stop by the store any time,” Eddie said.

South Plains College Plainview Center will celebrate its 10th anniversary in September. Since opening in 2005, the mission of SPC Plainview Center has been to attract first-generation college students, according to Paul Henderson, coordinator for Workforce Development. “When the first person in a family decides to attend college, graduates and becomes gainfully employed, it starts a cultural norm in the family,” Henderson said. “If one attends, that person will encourage those who come after to attain, move forward, advance and do well for themselves and their families. It’s very important to us as an institution to help each student succeed in his or her educational endeavor.” In 2014, the fall enrollment was 394 students, which set a record for the SPC Plainview Center. “Our students come from 50 square miles outward from this location,” Henderson said. SPC Plainview Center offers nursing and cosmetology. The Licensed Vocational Nursing program continues to remain full with a waiting list for admission. The Industrial Manufacturing and Emerging Technology (IMET) program continues to grow as well. “The combination of wind, solar and industrial manufacturing technology meets the needs of this community,” Henderson said. “IMET is going to be a core foundation for the community while enabling us to train the workforce for potential companies that may move here. SPC Plainview Center also can assist existing companies in their training needs.” Another training course that will soon be offered is the Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT). “With more patients needing dialysis, this new program will help us to respond to an increase in demand for qualified technicians,” Henderson said. SPC Plainview Center appreciates the City of Plainview and the surrounding communities for its support for the last 10 years. “We look forward to continuing to serve the community for many more years to come,” Henderson said.

Roxanne Barrientos, an LVN for 15 years, has worked at West Texas Family Medicine for the last six. Roxanne has high praise for Mark McClanahan, D.O., who won Gold for Family Practitioner. “Dr. McClanahan is very professional and pleasant to work with,” she said. “He treats everyone as an individual. Children love him and are happy to see him, as are the elders.” Also winning Gold for Walk-In Clinic, West Texas Family Medicine offers a broad range of services. “We’re very procedure-oriented,” said Phil Richards, communications director. “We try to keep everything in Plainview and in-house as much as we can to keep our patients from having to go to Amarillo or Lubbock for service.” Having extended hours makes West Texas Family Medicine even more convenient for Plainview patients. Phil explained that a team of five doctors own the facility. In addition, three physician assistants and a nurse practitioner operate their own practices within the facility. “We also have a team of great nurses and a receptionist who make sure things get done as quickly and efficiently as possible,” he said. West Texas Family Medicine has three facilities, including one in Hale Center and another in Floydada as well as a billing facility. The practice employs 72 people. “We provide the best care we can for Plainview folks,” Phil said. “We’re West Texas bred and we try to provide a West Texas service. We’re a basic family practice that provides all services from ob-gyn to geriatrics.” West Texas Family Medicine is grateful to their patients and to everyone who voted for them in the Readers’ Choice poll. For more information, check out their website at www.westtexasfamilymedicine.com.

Gold - Tanning Salon

Xclusive Tan Lacey Todd 2206 W Fifth St 806-293-9826

Finding the perfect tan is not only about being darker. It’s about the color and condition of your skin. In business six years, Xclusive Tan offers a combination of tanning beds, skin care products and UV Free systems. “With spray-tanning, you stand in a booth and the tanning solution is sprayed on you. With air-brushing, a technician sprays the solution on. Either lasts about a week,” said Lacey Todd, owner of Xclusive Tan. Open since October 2009, Lacey said their busiest time of year is from January to June. “Come and get your base tan before you go on vacation, so that you don’t burn,” she advises customers. “And if you can’t tan, spraytanning is a great option.” In addition to tanning booths, spray-tans and air-brushing, Xclusive Tan offers a variety of products including tanning lotion, sunscreen, after care such as aloe vera lotion, and a men’s line of lotions, body wash and shaving cream. “We also have spray tan in a can,” Lacey said. “You just spray it on, wait 10 to 12 hours, shower and you’re good to go. It’s a great touch-up when you’re on vacation.” Lacey added that today’s products are far better than over-thecounter spray tans were in the past. Xclusive Tan has its own T-shirt, and if you wear yours to the salon on Wednesday, you can get a free upgrade or a free tan. “It’s just been a great six years, and we appreciate everybody’s business. We have some great friends and great customers here,” Lacey said.

When it comes to weight loss, many of us need a little encouragement. Your Y membership offers ActivTrax, a web-based program for exercise, weight loss management and progress tracking. The program prescribes exercises and weights based on the equipment at the YMCA, plus meal planning and tracking of your caloric intake and burn that makes getting and staying healthy easier. “You can choose to monitor everything from basic body measurements to important medical risk factors through the program,” said Ashley Mayberry, Associate Executive Director of the YMCA. Here’s how it works: You tell the Y trainer your personal workout preferences, goals and exercise experience, and the trainer will provide the workout to get you where you want to go. The database of more than 20,000 foods ensures that your plan includes things you like to eat. The real-time dashboard gives you a clear view of your baseline, the progress you’ve made and where you’re heading. See a Personal Trainer to get a strength test, user name and password and get started today. Serving the community since 1948, the Y employs seven full-time staffers and 90 part-time employees. It offers adult aerobics, both water and land, lap swimming and spin classes. The workout room and weight room are available to members and the general public. An adult day pass costs just $7. Youth sports signups for football and volleyball begin in mid-August, with basketball signups starting in midSeptember. Check the website at www.plainviewymca.org for more information.

Gold - Nursery/Garden Center

West Texas weather is unpredictable at best, and it takes a certain amount of toughness to withstand the ups and downs. “At one point in November, the temperature went from 80 degrees down to nearly 0,” said Robert Barnett, owner of Robert’s tree house. “It takes awfully tough plants to withstand that type of weather.” Robert, who has degrees in Parks and Recreation and Landscape Horticulture from Texas Tech University, became the owner of Robert’s Tree House in 1981. “If you avoid planting during the very hottest and coldest days, you can plant virtually year-round,” Robert said. “Robert’s Tree House is Plainview’s only year-round garden center.” Due to the unusually heavy rain in May, Robert’s Tree House and its customers were not physically doing much planting. “But now that it’s dried up, we’re ready to keep on going,” he said. Robert’s Tree House offers bedding plants, annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs that have been hardened to the West Texas climate and are ready for planting. They use Fertilome products, which are available to customers. “There are always new products like environmentally friendly fertilizer, fungicides and insecticides,” Robert said. “We give our customers guidance on how to use the products and mix the quantity they need to have the best results.” Robert’s Tree House is an exclusive dealer in Plainview for Welby Gardens from Denver, one of the largest growers in the nation. “We also work with a good supplier of trees from northern Oklahoma to make sure that that trees are adapted to the West Texas climate,” Robert said. With more than 100 years of combined experience, Robert’s Tree House staff is eager to offer guidance on how to plant and care for their lawns and gardens. “Feel free to call us or come by with questions or concerns,” Robert said. “We’ll give you the right answer at right time so you can have best results.” Robert and the staff at Robert’s Tree House appreciate the Plainview community for their vote and their patronage over the last 35 years. “We look forward to serving you in the future,” Robert said.

Gold - Portrait Photographer

Don Dickson Photography 1501 W. Fifth St. 806-296-2276

In 1978 when Don Dickson Photography opened, everything was completely film-based. “In those days, everything was done by magic in the dark room,” said owner Don Dickson. “Now everything is done by magic in the computer.” However, some things remain the same. “It’s all about getting photographs from lighting onto a piece of paper,” Don said. “Weddings still have a bride and groom, high schools still have teams, and students still graduate.” Raised in Plainview, Don has been fascinated by photography since the sixth grade and was the photographer for his junior high and high school yearbooks. While digital cameras allow photographers to go outside more easily, Don said that in the Panhandle, they have a small season in which to shoot. “Industry-wide, there are not as many portrait studios as there were, but I’m glad to still have a studio, to still be able to create in the studio. When it comes to creating the images, a beautiful expression will always be the key to a beautiful portrait.” Don was one of the driving forces behind a world photographic cup involving 32 countries. In this, the third year, 42 countries will be involved. “It has grown pretty fast, and it all started here in Plainview, Texas,” he said. While different countries have different photographic styles, “Good lighting and good posing is still universal,” Don said.

Don Dickson Photography employs two full-time and one part-time employees. “I’m excited that I’ve been able to spend my career in Plainview, and look forward to an exciting future creating even more great portraits” Don said.

Geneva Marquez, who received the Gold award for Best Teller, is an example of the bank’s customer service philosophy. “She is loyal and has a great attitude,” said Willis McCutcheon, president of Happy State Bank in Plainview. “Geneva meets everyone with an enthusiastic smile and takes care of business promptly and efficiently.” Geneva is just one of the tellers that reflect Happy State Bank’s customer service focus. “We have a great set of tellers that do an outstanding job of customer service,” Willis said. “Our strong team works together well and enjoys the customers. They take customer service personally and, therefore, provide outstanding customer service.” Happy State Bank is a full-service bank in business since 1908. They have 34 branches and are in the process of building a fourstory structure in Lubbock, projected to open by the end of 2015. The Plainview branch, opened in May 2007, has 12 employees. On May 3, 2010, they opened the existing two-story, 12,500 sq. ft. building in Plainview. Happy State Bank emphasizes that to be recognized as a true professional, a Happy State Bank employee must focus on continuous improvement, strive to provide superior service and products, and develop long-standing customer relationships. Their statement of mission and philosophy is: “Work hard, have fun, make money, while providing outstanding customer service and honoring the Golden Rule.” “We’d like to thank the Plainview community for supporting us and voting for us,” McCutcheon said. In business for 10 years in Plainview, Apex Collision is looking toward the future. Three years ago, they started another auto repair store in Clovis, N.M. Within the next month they expect to open Apex Truck and Accessories just east of their Plainview location. The two current locations employ 60 staff members. “We are Plainview’s headquarters for hail damage, and leaders in West Texas and eastern New Mexico for collision repair,” said owner Darin Halblieb. The next phase for Apex Collision is aluminum repair. “With new all-aluminum vehicles like the 2015 F-150 coming out, we’ll be one of the only auto repair centers certified to work on aluminum vehicles,” Darin said. Some of the services offered by Apex Collision Center are professional paint/color matching, quality body repair, accessories for cars or trucks, windshield replacement, insurance claim help, warranties on their work and towing. Apex Collision Center’s code of ethics states: “In pursuit of excellence through quality service, high standards and dedication to customer satisfaction, Apex Collision Center is committed to professionalism that enhances customer relations. Apex Collision Center aims to perform high quality repairs at a fair price, using qualified technicians and appropriate equipment and to always conduct business activities in a professional and ethical manner.” “We strive every day to be the best auto body repair shop, and we thank the Plainview community for voting us the best for the last 10 consecutive years,” Darin said.
