The Liberty Lions Flag program places a flag at your residence or business six times per year for a $35 annual donation per flag. One can order a U.S. Flag or Texas Flag. The Dayton Noon Lions and Hardin Lions have similar flag programs.

The 300-pound concrete Liberty Bell replica is a fundraising project of the Rotary Club of Liberty. One can find these bells painted all across Liberty and some are unpainted. Proceeds benefit two great causes: the Rotary International Polio Plus effort to eradicate Polio worldwide, of which “We are this close!”

The Liberty Bell Tower reconstruction fund to rebuild the bell tower for the original Liberty Bell on the grounds the Liberty Municipal Library is the other beneficiary of the Rotary Liberty Bell project. To order a bell, call 832-477-7314.

N

ational Wildlife Refuges were created for conservation of water, habitat, and wildlife. “They are for the birds”, one might say. However, they are for the people too. Visitors to a refuge may hike, fish, boat, hunt, and even find themselves in and up personal experience p close and p ersonal expe p rience with wildlife.

Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge is one of Liberty County’s hidden treasures. It was established in 1994 to protect the bottomland hardwood ecosystem associated with the Trinity River. During that time, is has grown to 30,000 acres thanks to willing sellers within the floodplain of the river. The Refuge isn’t isn t just j st out in the country, ju y the Cityy of Libertyy and

Trinity River Refuge share boundaries. Nearly the entire northern and western edge of the city, north of HWY 90, is surrounded by forest that is managed by the Refuge. When this public land is not flooded, it is open for hiking and exploration.

Boardwalks Continued from 4 The bottomlands of the Trinity River floodplain are mysterious. Sometimes they can feel a bit forbidding, but volunteers have been working to help the trails feel safe enough for visitors to explore and leave of their comfort zone. Volunteers have come from far and wide to assist with the From Crosswalks to Boardwalks Project. They have made it possible to visit and even walk over water without disturbing the critters that live below.

Volunteer must work together to ensure spacing between boards is carefully set. They use speedy squares to make sure boards are spread apart evenly.

This project was designed several years before they were born, but she had them in mind. She hopes they will spend their youth hiking the trails and using the bike routes to bike to and from trailheads and school.

Refuge Manager Stuart Marcus standing at the edge of Palmer Bayou as the area was undergoing flooding in October 2015. He and other staff members went out to construction site, despite the flooding, to haul out wood materials before they floated away. During the peak of the flood, the water went as high as 3 feet over his head.

Boardwalks Continued from 5 Boy Scouts, professionals with the AFL-CIO Union Sportsmen’s Alliance, volunteers with the American Hiking Society, students from Liberty High School and Houston Student Conservation Association (Houston SCA), constructed over 15 miles of trails. In time, the mileage of trails will increase to 29 miles. Additionally, grants from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Friends of Trinity River Refuge, and the Liberty Community Development Corporation funded the materials and surveys needed to build Palmer Bayou Boardwalk.

This 500-foot boardwalk is the crown jewel of the project. It features an observation deck which serves as a living classroom above Palmer Bayou. It was constructed from recycled plastic using a state of the art technique which minimized disturbance in sensitive wetlands. Boy Scouts built trailheads and benches at

the Knobby Knees Trailhead (Liberty Municipal Park) and the Great Egret’s Ridge Trailhead (at the end of Ohio Street). Houston SCA crews wielded axes, removing cypress knees, to make way for the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance to bring in materials and machinery to build the Palmer Bayou Boardwalk using their professional skills. Dedication to the project by volunteers has indeed made it possible to walk over water.

To commemorate the volunteers involved with the From Crosswalks to Boardwalks Project, a plaque has been created in their honor. It will be unveiled and dedicated by the Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and President of the AFL-CIO, Richard Trumka. Please join us at the dedication ceremony Thursday, March 17, 2016, at the Liberty Municipal Park.

The From Crosswalks to Boardwalks Project is also a place where youth can acquire outdoor skills as a part of their volunteer service projects. Bryan Matyear installed this bench at the pond near the Knobby Knees Trailhead as part of his Eagle Scout Project.

Martha Salinas of IBEW 716 is carrying in at least 40 lbs of building materials. All building materials had to be carried in by hand.

yndon Johnson was the president of the United States of America. People across the nation were rocking and rolling to tunes such as The Supremes, “Come See About Me”, the Rolling Stones, “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction” , and “You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feelin’”, by the Righteous Brothers, . It was the year 1965 , and the price of gas was 8

only 31 cents per gallon. First-class postage stamps could be purchased for $0.05, and a dozen of eggs was a whopping 53 cents! The times were simple and special. For one Liberty County couple, it was so much more. Mr. Terry Sr. and Janice Elder of Hardin had welcomed the birth of their first child, Tammie Marberry, on January 13, 1965 at Yettie Kersting Memorial Hospital in Liberty, Texas. How

fortunate for the students of Liberty County! Dr. Marberry has spent decades tirelessly imparting her considerable knowledge and applying her gargantuan skills and heart to the school districts of Liberty County. This Educational Cooperative has been known formerly known as Liberty County Educational Cooperative.

Coop, as it is routinely referred to, is the headquarters of the experts who determine individual strategies, and then communicate with administrators, teachers, parents, students, and staff in order to assure the success of students in the special needs population.

At the helm of Southeast Texas Cooperative for Special Services, Dr. Marberry will oversee eight school districts: Anahuac ISD, Cleveland ISD, Devers ISD, Hardin ISD, Hull Daisetta ISD, Liberty ISD, Splendora ISD, and Tarkington ISD. She approaches the task with the same optimistic attitude that afforded this local girl success throughout her school years and into her professional life.

The hometown girl has prepared herself.

She has worked as a teacher, counselor, administrator, supervisor, and assistant superintendent. She has a hands- on personality. During a work day, she can be observed stopping to take moment to get a hug from a former student. She enjoyed a wonderful rapport with the youngsters and parents. Even as she prepared to make her career change within days, she could be found performing simple, kind-hearted, fun loving duties.

During Homecoming for Hardin, Dr. Marberry reported to the Hardin Elementary School for some early morning cheek cheer painting. The leader who donned the cheerleading suit back at the end of sixth grade still has community spirit.

Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Marberry have raised a fine family of girls. The apples they would seem do not fall far from the tree. In her spare time, Dr. Marberry enjoys spending time with her family and attending church events.

Another favorite pastime of her is spontaneous family poolside gatherings with her quite large extended family. She still loves to learn and relishes occasional break to read a light work of fiction.

Mental Health in the Judicial System

Judge Mark Morefield, 75th District Court, feels the judicial system could do more to help veterans with mental health problems. Himself a veteran, he is always looking out for fellow veterans.

Judge Morefield said, “The mental trauma that veterans experience, such as PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), is an issue that we deal with almost on a daily basis. I am exasperated for the lack of resources. It is a huge problem.

“There seems to be some movement in Texas legislature and in the court system to help this, expanding the scope of the veterans court.

Morefield recalled two situations. First, Fir irst, a defendant defen ndan nt on his way to the penitentiary who he knew did not need to go there. “Now he is a member of the faithbased group, out speaking for them, and preaching part-time. It is a wonderful success story.”

Another was a female probationer who had overdosed on drugs, died on the table at the hospital, was shocked back to life and went into a drug rehab program in Illinois. “She had a miraculous turnaround.”

Judge Morefield said solemnly, “We hope that they work that way. It is a small percentage.”

In dealing with mental health, the judge says, “We have only two choices. We rely on the lawyer to file that they intend to claim the defense of insanity and a motion suggesting they are incompetent to stand trial.

“There is a long waiting list. Many come back in the same condition as when they left. The second choice is to try the case.

“The penitentiary does not have the staff or resources to deal with them. They go back on the streets with the same problems that caused them to be incarcerated.

It’s terribly unfortunate that we have been dealing with mental health problems in the State of Texas by putting people in the penitentiary.”

Military Veteran Peer Network

PTSD ASSESSMENT Ashley Taylor, the Veteran Services Liaison for Tri-County Behavioral Healthcare, coordinates the Military Veteran Peer Network (MVPN) program in Liberty County. The Military Veteran Peer Network is a collaborative program with the Texas Veterans Commission, the Department of State Health Services, and the Local Mental Health Authorities. The program was created to improve access to mental health services, but over the years it has evolved with connecting Veterans to all services. The mission of the Military Veteran Peer Network is to establish camaraderie and trust with Veterans throughout the community while identifying local resources and spreading awareness of Veteran centered opportunities. The main opportunity for Veterans through MVPN is to become a Peer Mentor.

Peer Mentors complete an eight hour ‘Basic Training’ which educates and provides tools in order to conduct outreach with local Veterans. Peer Mentors may also choose to attend an advanced level of training which enables them to facilitate PTSD Support Groups using a curriculum titled, Bringing Everyone in the Zone Currently, there Zone ((BEITZ).

TriCounty Services provides specialized programs for mental health treatment of

advanced level Peer Mentors in Liberty who host a BEITZ group every Sunday night at 4:00pm at the Elk’s Lodge.

Recently, the facilitators Nathan David and Mark Bowen were presented with an appreciation award for their dedication and extraordinary efforts. BEITZ support groups are available at no cost for Veterans who simply need to talk, share their stories, and learn coping skills. Best of all, this group is based on the premise of peer support, where Veterans who have been through similar circumstances from their military service can relate to each other.

The Private Psychiatric Legacy caseload is for cases outside of Tri County Behavioral Healthcare.

Several veterans in Liberty County are serviced through the TCOOMMI program.

They are seen twice a month, once on a field visit by a probation officer and once by a caseworker from Tri County.

There are also collateral visits to either a neighbor, friend or family member to check on the probationer. The pro-

gram runs until their probation ends.

Right now, Boyer has 28 TCOOMMI cases and two regular cases. A fellow caseworker, Graciela Trevizo has 15 TCOOMMI cases.

Nine other cases are out pending, according to Boyer.

The four major diagnoses are: • Schizophrenia • Bipolar Disorder • Major Depression • Schizoaffective Disorder (severe changes in mood and some symptoms of schizophrenia)

The job of a mentor is to assist in the best way possi-ble b to help facilitate the success of thee Veterans treatment plan. Veterans who V o have completed Veterans Treatmentt h Court have often stated their gratitude forr C their mentor. t The beauty of MVPN is that it is adapt-able to each community. What MVPN a N looks like in Liberty may be different than lo n what it looks like in Conroe, or even w n Lufkin.

“We are 85% complete and have established a hand-shake agreement with Clean Harbors Environmental al (Norwell, Mass.). We make the prototype. They are perrmitted to process the K-170 waste at Duratherm in San n Leon.”

decided that various industries that generated waste needed to see how toxic they were, and if bad enough, be listed.” Of the nine K-wastes in the petroleum industry, Weber has been studying K-170 since 1996.

“The first commercial, cat-cracker was introduced

by Standard Oil in May 1942 in Baton Rouge, La. We are working with the people over there now. It takes the equivalent of tar and turns it into gasoline at the rate of 60% plus gasoline.”

“Slurry oil that comes out the bottom and goes to the storage tank over time has been designated K-170.

“Before 1998 legislation, disposal of K-170 was $28.50/ton. One day later, it zoomed to $400/ton, and is now $550 to $650 per ton.”

CFMT has turned it into two valuable products, Premium Grade Slurry Oil and Equilibrium Catalyst, which can be recycled.

The 20’ x 16’, three-story structure is built to be taken apart and shipped.

Weber described, “A feed preparation vessel will be situated right outside the processing unit. A digester sifts the mix. Solids settle to the bottom and are decanted off. A series of filters sifts the oil. Sprays and circulating augers force it downward into a hollow flight dryer. Anything volatile goes up as a vapor. Dry catalyst remains.”

“We are shooting for a 99% recovery rate.”

The prototype processes ½-ton per run, about 6-10 tons per day, and Clean Harbors targets 120-150 tons per day.

Weber said, “If we started tomorrow and did 120 tons/day on the FCC Corridor, it would take 7-12 years to clean up the K-170, seven if nobody produces anymore waste. There are 113 refineries in North America that have cat-crackers, 300 in the world.”

This will be the 31st Jubilee that started in 1986 as part of the Texas Sesquicentennial Celebration. Often described as one of the best small town festivals in the State of Texas, the Liberty Jubilee is a family style festival held around the historic downtown area usually on the fourth weekend of March each year. However, the Liberty Jubilee will be held on a different date in 2016, on March 18-19, as the fourth weekend of March falls on Easter Weekend. The FREE admission festival opens at noon on Friday with an evening street dance concert. A popular Barbecue Cookoff competition is held each year with teams setting up on Friday afternoon and judging held on Saturday. The festival is greatly expanded on Saturday, something for everyone in the family to see or do throughout the day on Saturday. There are two stages of live entertainment, strolling clowns, children’s games and rides, outdoor recreation section, arts and crafts and, of course, great food.

The Annual Easter Rodeo will be March 25-27 at the Trinity Valley Exposition, Inc., 321 FM 563, Liberty. This major fundraiser for Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church in Ames began in 1939 on land adjacent to the church. After moving to the grounds of Cleveland Domain’s 150-acre ranch, the rodeo continued to grow in participants and attendance, eventually moving to the Trinity Valley Exposition Arena. The Ames Easter Rodeo became a major stop, one of the earliest, on the professional Texas Black Cowboy Rodeo Circuit, attracting the professional black cowboys and cowgirls from all over Texas and was sanctioned by their organization, but it was not segregated unlike some of the white rodeos.

Anyone could ride and rope. It continues to be a major rodeo in Texas attracting the best that compete to win money, buckles and halters. The Easter Rodeo features standard events from bull riding to calf roping, steer wrestling and barrel racing, organized and approved by the Anahuac Saltgrass Cowboy Association. Many of the rodeo events are classified by age or PW, Juniors and Seniors. Girls and boys compete for buckles and points for the annual championships awarded by A.S.G.C.A. In recent years a trail ride supported by area trail ride clubs is held on Saturday at 2 p.m. Additionally after the rodeo every night are zydeco dances featuring wellknown artists such as this year’s schedule: Ruben Moreno @Zydeco RE-evolution on Friday, Keith Frank and the Souileau Zydeco Band on Saturday and Brian Jack and the Zydeco Gamblers on Sunday. Since 2001 South Liberty County Relay for Life has raised over $1.3 million dollars. This Liberty County’s signature event for the American Cancer Society includes music by the Invincible Eagle Band, laps by survivors, caregivers and friends, the Luminary Ceremony, a pizza party, and victory laps. Last year over twenty teams representing businesses, school groups, service organizations, churches and governments participated. One of the dramatic events is always the staged balloon release that begins with the newest cancer survivors of five years and ends with oldest survivors of more than 50 years. Ford says, “It is just a good family event. When you watch the kids’ excitement from catching a fish, that is what it is all about.”

July City of Liberty’s July 4th on July 3rd at the Liberty Municipal Park starts at 8 p.m. The city’s Independence Day Celebration has the best fireworks in South East Texas due to the fact that the great Zambelli Family provides the show. Music from the Invincible Eagle Band, the posting of colors by the Liberty VFW, followed by Sierra Morrison singing the National Anthem, Texas Our Texas, and God Bless America highlighted the 2015 program. Liberty High School’s Ms. Morrison is the threetime State First Place 3-A UIL Choir Soloist. Around 9:15 p.m. the big fireworks show begins, and it is as good or better than most shows. The reason for having the show on July 3rd is that Zambelli gives a bigger show and the next day is a holiday! Contact the City of Liberty at 936336-3684. It would make sense that a city named Liberty would have a big show for American Independence.

May The Hull-Daisetta Mayhaw Festival is Thurs., Fri., Sat., May 5-7, a three-day, fun-filled family event in Daisetta on the grounds of Hull-Daisetta ISD grounds. There are numerous contests in doubles horseshoe pitching, doubles washer pitching, BBQ and Fajita Cook-off, the Grill Master Competition, a beauty See a schedule of events on pageant, roping, page 34 3-man basketball and volleyball, and dominos. Craft booths, carnival rides and games, tours of the Historical Pound House, historical exhibits, the Hull-Daisetta Bobcat Boosters booth for your Bobcat pride, gospel singing and of course, the world-famous Mayhaw Jelly Contest round out the program. The event has Friday night street dance, usually featuring a well-known band and the big parade starts down Daisetta’s Main Street at 10 a.m., Saturday morning. There are over 100 booth spaces with a variety of foods, along with arts and crafts, and especially the Mayhaw Jelly and local honey vendors. The carnival provides three days of fun for children and adults. Since 1982 the Hull-Daisetta Mayhaw Festival promotes the native Mayhaw fruit, widely used in making jams and jellies in Southeast Texas. For info see mayhawfestival. org or call 936-334-2779. Liberty County First Responders Memorial Ceremony, sponsored by the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, is held every May, usually on Sunday evening, May 15, at the Liberty Church of Christ, 3201 N. Main St., to honor Texas first responders that have given their lives in the line of duty. All public service agencies in the area and the general public are invited to attend to show their appreciation to all persons in all public service agencies throughout the county who serve the citizens on a daily basis. PAWS 4 Love is the Liberty Municipal Library’s program that offers a special treat for school-age children who want to improve their reading skills. The popular PAWS 4 Love reading program usually held in August with reading education assistance dogs. These special 22

dogs are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owners as a team to provide supervised reading practice necessary to build vocabulary, gain fluency as a reader and at the same time just have some dog-gone good fun. The dogs will be available for reading from 10:00 a.m. ‘till noon & from 1 - 3 p.m. with time slots filled on a firstcome, first-served basis. The reading sessions will last about 20 minutes. The Trinity Valley Exposition Fair and Rodeo is held in October. In 2016 it will be Oct. 14-22. This event is for Liberty and Chambers Counties. The event is a combination county fair and a professional rodeo with a lengthy history from 1909. There is an opening day parade, kickoff dance, days of rodeo from Extreme Bull Riding to wild cow milking and barrel racing, a barbecue cookoff, a rodeo queens contest, a trailride, a carnival, exhibit and food booths, national recognized musical entertainment and nightly dances after the rodeo, and all of the livestock exhibits by the youth. A major event each year is the auction of price winning livestock and baked goods. The TVE awards scholarships each year to area students. BY ROBERT L. SCHAADT Feature Writer and Archivist Since 1986 Liberty has celebrated Jubilee. The 2016 Jubilee is March 18-19. Downtown streets close and magically are filled with arts, crafts, a cookoff, white tigers, music and more. It all began in 1986 with Texas’ 150th birthday.

Early 1985 County Historical Commission Chair Sandra Pickett organized the sesquicentennial commission with Linda Thompson, Chair and members: Sandy Pickett, Lamar Iverson, Tanya Wiggins, Mignette Quinn, Dottie Warren and Robert Schaadt. Committee Chairmen were Paula Fielder, Vernette Burnett, Linda Bertman, Betsy Boyt, Gloria Stratton, Sara Brown, Roy Bennett, Ida Thompson, Homer Smith, Sandra Kittrell, Louis and Donna Neumeyer, Ray and Pam Milentz, JoAnn Root, Barbara Van Deventer, Ann Harris, Connie Arnold and Laura Pickett.

Planned for April 19, “Jubilee” came from “South Australia 150 in 1986”, a sister event.

After Eagle Scouts Larry Hajovsky and Wesley Hinch performed the flag ceremony, Texas State Sesquicentennial Commissioner Sharen Eisenminger sanctioned the commission and events.

Due to a shortage of funds, members considered delaying construction of a custom pavilion. Iverson continued valiantly to spearhead the project.

“Gov. Bill Daniel put a lot of stars in my eyes,” said Thompson upon receiving his $22,500 pledge.

Liberty Art League opened a Sesquicentennial Painting Show at FLNB. Thousands enjoyed the Vara Martin Daniel Jubilee Pavilion Dedication. Mayor C. Scott Parker recognized Graeme Brighton, of Naracoorte, South Australia, naming him honorary City Council Member.

Events included the Opening Ceremony with Thompson, Mayor Parker and County Judge Dempsie Henley, a hog-calling contest, Buddy Griffin and His Banjo Magic, Gov. The Ames Rodeo AN EASTER TRADITION

BY ROBERT L. SCHAADT Feature Writer & Archivist The Annual Easter Zydeco, Trail Ride, and Rodeo is held each year at the TVE Fairgrounds, with ASGCA approved events.

Starting at 9 a.m. Saturday with calf roping, trail ride at 2 p.m. followed by a dance at 6 p.m. with a popular Zydeco band.

Sunday’s Easter Rodeo starts at 3 p.m. followed by another dance.

The Ames Easter Rodeo helps support Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church.

The late Christine Domain, her husband, the late Cleveland Domain, and family started the rodeo and kept it going for decades, even providing the Domain Ranch as the rodeo grounds.

Christine Trahan Domain remembered as a little girl helping shear the sheep they raised when the wool buyer came out from Houston. Her father and brothers, Pete and John, were rice farmers.

In 1939 members of Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church decided to help the church by holding an annual Easter rodeo. The first rodeo was held on open property just northeast of the church grounds.

Cleveland Domain, T. P. Trahan, Lewis Trahan, Tony Travis and Emile Fontenot were among the founders of the big event.

Early rodeos were successful among the residents of Ames, Raywood, Liberty and South Liberty County. Church members built wooden bleachers, fences and shoots.

Early bands featured the accordion playing the French dance music, sometimes a combination of Cajun and la la music, eventually including early rock-n-roll and new forms of zydeco incorporating blues, French, and rock-nroll.

Early bands included The Saxons, Grady Gaines and Willis Prudhomme Bands.

Some of the best cowboys, riders and ropers, helped 28

from the beginning such as Owen and Warren Jackson, Ralph Homes, Leo Frank, Tony Travis, Gaze Ozan, Cleveland Walters, C. Whittington, and many others.

The Ames Easter Rodeo became one of the earliest, major stops on the professional Texas Black Cowboy Rodeo Circuit, attracting professional black cowboys and cowgirls from all over Texas, sanctioned by the their professional organization, but it was not segregated unlike some of the white rodeos.

After discussions held at the church, the Easter Rodeo moved to Cleveland Domain’s 150-acre ranch located south of Ames on FM 160 for a number of years.

Mrs. Domain and her family, along with J. P. Trahan, and Emile Fontenot continued to hold the event at the ranch for a number of years following Cleveland Domain’s South Liberty County Quarterly

death in 1954.

Eventually the Easter Rodeo became too popular and with hundreds in attendance, growing too large for the ranch.

The church committee decided to move it to TVE on FM 563.

Ole Tyme Days Festival: April 15-17 DAYTON, TEXAS

BY CAROL SKEWES Publisher The Dayton Ole Tyme Days Festival started in 1993 in Dayton, Texas.

According to Dayton Mayor Jeff Lambright, it began with the Dayton Retail Association, a group of antique stores and retailers to promote Dayton.

Mayor Lambright said, “My grandmother, Jackie Lambright, and Lewis Mosley (President of the Retailers Association) were a big part of it.

“We tried to do Antique Weekends or Antique Saturdays.

“Artisans, who came in from out of town, showcased blacksmithing, spinning thread, loom weaving, woodcarving, pottery and quilting.

“Ladies dressed up in 1920’s-1930’s costumes.

Lambright credits Trophy Shop owner Paula Brown for the festival’s early success. “She helped the festival evolve to include the Texas State Junior Chili Championship, and a dance. There was a Wild West Show on Main Street with the late Carole Bagley.” The festival then included arts, crafts, games, entertainment, a barbecue cookoff, and classic cars.

Soon Lil’ Miss & Mr. Dayton Ole Tyme Days Pageant, face-painting, a train ride, moonwalk, a petting zoo, goatdressing contest and carnival were added.

Later came a jeep 4x4 show and tractor show.

Shuttle service made sure guests conveniently got to and from the festival.

Lambright said, “Everybody loved it when it was held downtown.”

He and his wife, Kim, remember working the festival the first three years.

He also credits the Arnold Family, huge supporters from the start saying, “They worked behind the scenes and helped with everything.”

“In about the fourth year, the Young Farmers came in, Spring 2016

and without them, there would not be an Ole Tyme Days Festival today. Bill Gray brought the Young Farmers group and added the barbecue cookoff, in which adults still participate.

Former Dayton City Manager Robert Eureck assisted in getting the 501(c)(3) application, helped set up a board of directors and formalized the festival and scholarship committees.

The Lambrights, the late Jay Tankersley, and wife, Betty, along with Thrif-Tee Food Center co-owner Cliff Richey, and Eureck, were the board that oversaw the festival committee. Day-to-day operations were all run by volunteers.

Lambright added, “Over the years there have been many different people in charge. The board has always been the rock foundation.”

need, not necessarily the top students. Lambright said, “It is a huge help to them. Grades were not the first criteria. That is still the case.” Since the Dayton Community Center was built the festival moved out there from US 90 and crowds followed. Lambright said, “I would love to see it move back downtown.”

When you close the streets, it gets magical.

Mayhaw Festival: May 5-7

BY DENNIS WARREN Contributing Writer Let the good times roll, May 5 - 7 at the Daisetta Mayhaw Festival. President Donna Wallace is adding fun, games and more food to the family friendly festival.

Yes, the rock wall is returning; however, laser tag and hamster ball are being added! Appetites are encouraged.

Fontenot’s will be there as usual with all their tantalizing entrees. Several more food booths will be on hand including fresh, handmade tamales.

Thursday evening is the beauty pageant. Festival VicePresident Margo Bishop is the longtime director. The pageant features a division for all ages of female students.

It takes place in the Hull-Daisetta auditorium. The carnival action is in the main parking lot of the high school.

The Cook-off is being staged this year immediately across Main Street from the high school. Friday night, cook-off teams turn in fajitas and margaritas for judging.

Down the block, at the United Pentecostal Church, a gospel singing will entertain music lovers.

Look out Saturday; the good times start at 7 a.m.

Festival newcomer and HD native Jeff Martin is organizing a 5K run / walk. Tentatively named the Mayhaw March, if Jeff is involved, you know it’ll be fun. The jelly contest is Saturday morning. People from far and wide enter hoping for a ribbon and recognition as Mayhaw champion. Speaking of food, the Cook-off for the chicken, ribs, brisket, and deserts is Saturday afternoon. Also, new this year is a gumbo category that will judge early Saturday afternoon. All the midway attractions including dominos, basketball, dodgeball, the watusi bull will give anyone a grand and great welcome to the Mayhaw Festival on Saturday morning. Festival board member 30

Cathy Johnson will direct the domino action. Longtime parade director Patti Atkins is back to insure a clean, wellorganized parade and for those who want tours of the G. W. Pounds house (circa 1890). That home is located about a mile south of Daisetta.

New this year is a car show. Granville Taylor, festival newcomer, HD native, and auto enthusiast extraordinaire is set to entertain everyone with some of the area’s finest rides.

What is a mayhaw? It is a small, dark pink fruit. It grows on a tree not much bigger than a dogwood tree with long thin thorns everywhere. Mayhaws like the water and grow naturally where there is plenty of water.

Mayhaws do not lend themselves to commercialization very well, mostly because of the water and harvesting issues.

The Masons of South Liberty County

BY BONITA DAVIS Contributing Writer This region is fortunate in that it has numerous organizations, sororities and fraternities that go out of their way to make life better in South Liberty County.

Amongst the oldest is the Order of the Masons.

Men drawn to be masons are deeply concerned about the community. They band together and help people, but one of the most unique qualities about them is that they seem to want little or no attention for their good deeds.

Liberty Masonic Lodge #48 A.F. & A.M., (Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, chartered 1849) is one of the oldest entities in the City of Liberty. The number of the lodge is indicative of the age, the closer to number one, the older the lodge. Dayton #825 A.F. & A.M.,, and Hull #1193 A.F. & A.M., are the three masonic lodges currently active in South Liberty County.

The masons are known for saying that they can, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Take a good man, and make him a better man.â&#x20AC;?

District Deputy Director Kemp Newman oversees seven blue lodges including the three located here. He is excited about the work that masons perform. He reiterates that while there are some private factors about being a mason, just as with any fraternity or organization, the masons are real people. Masons are friends, neighbors, and usually members of other service organizations and professions.

Over the past several years, because of the rise in cost of higher education, their concern for the education of students has led to a dramatic increase in scholarship monies. They have raised from $500 several years ago to $10,000 last year. South Liberty County masons contribute to the Shriners Hospital as well as Scottish Rite, which has long led the push for diagnostics and strategies for dyslexic students.

Many acts that they carry out are not publicized. Quite often, masons give their donations to other organizations for distribution, preferring to remain in the background.

Masons truly act as brothers. That is how Delbert Richardson, came to be both a Hull and Dayton mason.

He also belongs to another lodge in Olive Branch.

Masons Continued from 32 Once a man becomes a mason, he can attend in any lodge that practices as his does. If a lodge is in danger of closing due to lack of attendance, brothers from surrounding areas go and join that lodge and work on increasing the membership.

Richardson lives in Atascocita and owns a business in Dayton. He sports a masonic ring worn by his great grandfather. His father-in-law was also a mason. Richardson recalls his proudest moment as a mason when he was awarded The Golden Trowel, and had his son pin him at the ceremony.

The Golden Trowel Award is the highest award that a mason can receive from his brothers.

The Community Builder Award is the highest award masons given to a non-mason.

ocated at 2800 Beaumont Avenue, Suite A, Liberty, Texas is home to a team of professionals who are concerned about the complete health care of their patients. Trinity Valley Medical Clinic is a full service medical clinic with an extremely large weight loss program including the HCG diet.

In 2008, Dr. D. M. McClellan opened a Liberty location that concentrated on weight loss only. His employee since 1990, Medical Assistant, Sandy Bransford, experienced, certified in health and nutrition and the HGC diet; was selected to pioneer the new Liberty clinic. She continues to counsel weight loss patients even as she oversees the entire workings of the office.

It is a short wait to see a medical provider at TVM. The front desk is efficiently staffed by Vivian Hibbits.

He was Academic Coordinator for the Duke Physician Associate Program and faculty member in the Department of Community Health Sciences. The Texas Olive, new oil boom

BY JACOB STEWART Contributing Writer Olive oil, a tangy addition to any meal. Its potential is limitless as farmers all over the world are beginning to experiment with the valuable commodity. In recent years the olive oil trade has seen scandal as mafia ties have soiled the now booming trade, no pun intended. When a person mentions olive oil the

first locations to come to mind are the vineyards of Italy, Greece, and even sunny California. That is to say until Gino Venitucci, an Italian, brought the valuable little plant to the wet climate of southeast Texas.

Gino is no longer running the business. Instead, it has been purchased by a partnership out of the small

THE MYTHOLOGY BEHIND

I

n the early days of the human civilization, mankind was beginning to settle into cities.

This was made possible by the invention and cultivation of food. Now humans were able to harvest a readily available food source. The mythology of the ancient Greeks gives us the explanation of the creation of the olive. In the early days of Ancient Greece there was a city that did not have a patron god. In those days the citizens would worship a god and in return that god would bless the city with whatever the god or goddess was associated with. Examples: Zeus, the king of the gods and Ares, the god of war and the patron of Sparta.

The citizens of this city were split between a god and goddess. They were Athena, goddess of wisdom and Poseidon, god of the sea.

The argument between the citizens and gods became so great that eventually it made its way to the ears of Zeus himself. Zeus, the patron of the Olympic Games, decided that a competition would be the deciding factor. Each god would provide a resource for the people of the city, and whomever created the better resource would be the victor.

Early the next morning the citizens gathered outside of the walls and waited for the gods to arrive.

Poseidon was the first to arrive and was the first to compete. He struck the ground with his trident and from that spot a spring of cool, clear water flowed.

The citizens rejoiced and ran to taste this water, but found it to be very salty. The god of the sea had provided salt water to the city. So, the citizens turned their eyes to Athena to see what the goddess of wisdom could provide. Athena struck the ground near the spring and from it appeared the very first olive tree. The citizens ate the fruit the tree provided and reduced it to a very tasty oil. Athena was named the victor and the city of Athens, birthplace of democracy, was born.

Olives Continued from 38 A gift from the goddess Athena, the olive has become a staple for chefs all over the world.

With origins in ancient Greece, the delicious oil can now be purchased in just about any super market. However, the oil produced by the South East Texas Olive company is beginning to grow in size and reputation with many businesses in Liberty and the surrounding areas stocking their shelves with their olive oil. Southeast Texas Olive has a total of 70 acres, totaling nearly 10,500 trees. A far cry from the original 20 acres planted by Gino.

Olive oil is used by chefs all over the world because of not only the unique flavor the oil provides, but also the beneficial vitamins that the miracle oil provides. Rich in vitamin A & E, the oil is full of antioxidants and low on chemicals. One story even goes as far as healing an ear ache.

I had the opportunity to sit and speak with Mr. and Mrs. Brazil, a friendly couple who welcomed me into their home as if I was an old friend.

Reporter: “Why do you think olive oil isn’t as big of an industry in southeast Texas as say rice or cattle?”

Randy: “There is a very limited infrastructure because everything comes out of California or Europe, but this will change as more people get into the business…people want to see what will happen to us.”

Continued from 40 Reporter: “Do you have any advice for someone looking to get into the olive business?”

Randy: “You will need at least 20 acres of trees, I would not go above HWY. 105 north because of the freeze, and you will need to know how to harvest and how to mill before you get started.”

Reporter:” Where do you see yourself in the next five years?”

Randy: “We have already outgrown our original mill, and now we are leasing a new mill. Last year was a real good year, this year was not because of all of the rain. We were only able to harvest one half of the amount that was harvested in 2014. We will have our orchard completely planted, totaling nearly 40,000 trees. We are hoping to build our business up to be able to take other farmers olives and process them in our mill.”
