Camps/Classes/Play #SUMMERCAMPSSpaces It’s been a long winter and our kids are ready for Summer! Are you wondering where you’re sending them to Summer camp this year? We love Summer camp, not only becasue they are parent-free zones but because summer camp lets our kids roam and play in ways they rarely do in our homes and neighborhoods. It takes them away from TV, computers, and the over used tablets, swapping them for conversation and fun. Summer camp is also the place where kids have to learn to separate from their families and become resilient and independent. Here are a few options for your little ones! Happy #summercampsavanting

Mommy’s Night Out HOT-SPOTS
By Melissa Orr Azzarto Every now and then we all need to unwind with the girls! Here are a few of my favorite suggestions for a fun mommy's night out in Hoboken and Edgewater/Gold Coast. 1) Bin 14 - Wine! We love going for their special mussels night (tuesdays) and of course for all their delicious wine (afternoon outings with babe, or evenings just with the girls!) They do special wine tastings on the weekends too which are fab! www.bin14.com/our-events 2) The Cuban - I have done a few nice evenings out with my mom friends at this Hoboken hidden gem! Delicious cuban food, fun ambiance and oh boy, the sangria is delish!! www.thecubannj.com 3) Hudson Table - I have yet to take a class myself but they offer fabulous cooking classes - I've heard only good things!! Maybe I can reach out and convince them to give us a free class if we write them up in the summer edition/ mag? www.hudsontable.com 4) Give Peas A Chance Cooking Class - For new mamas, the cooking classes that Nicole from Give Peas a Chance hosts (at Hudson Table) are fabulous as well... I've taken a few and highly recommend. You come with some wine, meet some new moms and leave with weeks worth of baby food. www.babiesforpeas.com 5) Turtle Club - Fun lounge-type space with great cocktails (check out the "shrub" - interesting vodka/strawberry/basil/balsamic based drink!) and a good wine menu. Great for meeting up with the mamas! www.hobokenturtleclub.com/drink-menu-turtle-club 6) The Craft Lounge - If you want to do something different and crafty with your girlfriends, this is a great place to BYO vino and get creative! www.thecraftlounge.com LEONIA 7. Paloma Negra- We love the margaritas here and the authentic Mexican food. Their guac is to die for!! www.palomanegrarestaurant.com EDGEWATER 8. Son Cubano - For a great girls night out, try going on a Friday night. There’s a little bit of a bar scene, dancing and delicious cuban cuisine. www.soncubanonj.com WEST NEW YORK 9. The River Palm - NEVER be disappointed by the food or service here. They also serve sushi and although they are a steak house, the sushi chef here is amazing!! www.theriverpalm.com/EDGEWATER 10. Waterside Restaurant - With Spring and Summer in the horizon, there is no better outside seating along the Hudson. Their Sunday brunch is our favorite and they are super stroller and kid friendly. www.watersiderestaurantandcatering.com EDGEWATER

JENNIFER DeMARCO: Mommy, Wife, CEO By Melissa Orr Azzarto W Jennifer DeMarco, Founder and CEO of Local Barre Core Local Fitness Studio to the Hoboken Lady Savant community! She manages to balance it all seamlessly: that work-life balance that we all covet. How you ask? Read on for some insight… MA:Tell us a little bit about you! First and foremost, I am the
Jen at Maxwell’s for Mini Music Mondays with her kids
imaginative boys who are just twenty months apart and a beautiful baby girl who is six months now. I am married to the most loving, generous, and supportive man—my husband,

lives of my children through photography. I love food and wine, and I always carve out time for a weekly date night with my hubby! MA:What inspired you to start your own business? Just a few short years ago, I was working for a leading hedge fund in NYC. I would rush out of work in order to get to my barre class in there must be other women in Hoboken who would be interested, so I took a leap of faith and
Balance is some-
lucky in that I have incredible support, both with the business and at home. I always know that Local Barre and my children are well cared for even when I am focusing on the other. MA: How has the Hoboken community supported your business growth? We collaborate so much with other local businesses and are always generous with donations for local schools and charities. We never miss an opportunity to participate in the Hoboken Arts & Music Festival and other local community events. My husband and I made a commitment from the beginning to support local businesses, knowing that if we support local business, that energy would come back around for us. I’ve learned that by being kind, present, and genuine, others are rooting for my success! MA: Why is Hoboken where you’ve decided to start a business and also raise your kids?
is so much more to value—like the abundance of beautiful parks, extensive activities, and amazing people. Our family embraces everything about our city and I’m thrilled {and grateful!} to be raising my kids here. MA:Advice you’d give to other moms looking to start their dream business? Go for it. Fight through the barriers — and there will be plentiful. It’s impossible to forecast everything, so allow yourself to make mistakes--and then learn from them! It sounds cliché, but be true to yourself, be kind to others, and follow your dreams. 5 Reasons Why Your Child Is Not Sleeping Through The Night! By Amy Lage and Heather Hartzell
To many a tired parent, sleeping through the night may sound like a luxury item or a far-fetched goal beyond their reach. But in pediatric sleep practice, I have worked with hundreds of families and found that one (or a combo) of 5 things is always amiss when this milestone has not been met by a child who no longer requires a night time feed. Ensure these items are in check, apply them consistently, and you and your child will have mastered the art of healthy sleep and will 1. To Sleep Well at Night, Your Child Needs To Sleep Well During the Day: Many parents assume that without naps their child will be more tired and therefore more apt to sleep at night, but it’s actually the opposite. As sleep is cyclical, quality naps need to be in place in order for your child to achieve a good night’s sleep. Without adequate daytime sleep, your child enters their night in an overtired and stimulated state that will not allow their body to sleep in long, restorative stretches. So how do you make sure great naps happen? By scheduling naps to happen in sync with their body clock or their circadian rhythms. We all have an internal clock that tells our bodies when we should be asleep and when we should be awake. If we sleep in-sync with these clocks, we have our easiest time falling asleep, staying asleep, and can actually get in our best quality sleep. So when do these magical sleep times occur? For a baby age 4-18 months who is on two naps a day, we want them falling asleep for their morntoddler 14 months or older who is on just one nap a day, this nap needs to begin in the 12-1pm window. 2. Bedtime: become overtired, our bodies release the stress hormones adrenaline, noradrenaline and coroccurrence – whoo hoo we can keep on trekking without another double cappuccino and then act as a high dose of stimulants and make it very hard for them to fall asleep for the night. If going to bed overtired is a nightly occurrence, these hormones build up in the child’s blood
to know how long your child can tolerate being awake before they become overtired and have them fast asleep for the night before these hormones rear their ugly heads. As your child ages, they can of course tolerate being awake longer. 3. Sleep Crutches: at night between sleep cycles, if their “crutch” is not present, they will not be able to go back to sleep on their own. For example, if your child only knows falling asleep at night with you rocking them to a sleeping state, when they wake at night they will expect that to occur to go back to sleep. All sleep crutches are not necessarily bad - if your child can use or recreate their

replace it on their own and instead requires a parent to replace it….all night long! A simple lovey that has mom or dad’s scent and that is involved in the child’s pre-sleep routine is a great tool for
something that they can utilize without your assistance. Again, if your child relies on you or your presence to fall asleep at bedtime or naptime, they will rely on your when they wake at night. 4. Environment: We want to create the ideal sleep environment so that there is no question as to why they are waking up. Basically, we want to take the “what ifs” away. Is my child awake because he is cold? Because it is too loud? Too bright? He lost his blanket? To alleviate any of those questions – let’s just make sure the set up is right from the beginning! Your child’s room should be as dark as possible for all sleep – yes for naps too. Only use a night-light if it is truly necessary (please note, your child isn’t capable of being afraid of the dark until he reaches age two). His crib should be
your child falls asleep, as music during sleep doesn’t allow the brain to enter deep sleep given that -
as music during sleep doesn’t allow the brain to enter deep sleep given that it is actively trying to listen. Instead, use white noise to block out ambient household and street noises. White noise should only be as loud as a running shower and should be at least 4 feet from your child’s head. 5. Consistency: Consistency is key when it comes to teaching a child your expectations. If one day you expect them to fall asleep on their own and the next day you rock them to sleep – they will be very confused as to their sleep routine. Or if at bedtime your child has to sleep in their crib, but in the middle of the night it is ok to sleep in your bed – they will expect that they can always sleep in your bed (because babies and young children can’t tell time!). Sleep is a work in progress, as a child’s sleep overall needs will require alterations as they check, you will always have healthy sleep regimen is in place that will only require minor adjustments or small tweaks to insure that your child is always getting their best sleep and no major issues will ensue. As my husband likes to say – sleep is a marathon and not a sprint, there will be ups and downs but if healthy framework is in place, your Well rested baby was founded by Pediatric Sleep Consultants Amy Lage and Heather Hartzell. One Sunday night two years ago, I was in my kitchen peeling, chopping, steaming, and pureeing carrots for my 5-month-old son. After an hour or two of cooking alone in my kitchen, I thought, this would be way more fun to do with friends. And that’s how Give Peas a Chance Cooking School was born. We’ve since grown from teaching classes about pureed baby food to also teaching classes that encompass toddler finger foods and family meals. We also sell our food at stores around town and at local farmers markets. But the classes are still the core of our business. I love to watch moms cook together and enjoy a night out, while actually doing something productive for their little one. And since they get to go home with all the food they make, everyone wins!

We know how overwhelming it is for expectant mamas to think about what your new baby is goown children and through our baby registry consulting business, we have compiled a short list of must-haves to purchase before your new arrival comes home. 8 Ways To Get Your Kids To Eat More Vegetables
By Nicole Yorio Jurick If you’re sick of the dinnertime veggie battle, don’t
strategies will make you forever retire the phrase, Eat your veggies! 1. Taste the rainbow. Create a color chart of the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, blue, green, and purple—then make it their goal (and yours!) to eat one of each color fruit or veggie every day. 2. Go veggie picking. At the grocery store or farmer’s market, let your child pick out any one vegetable they’ve never tried, then take it home and cook it together. 3. Drink your veggies. Kale, spinach, frozen squash chunks—all taste great blended into a smoothie—and are a good way to start eating veggies at breakfast.
easy places to hide vegetables into your meals. Get recipes at babiesforpeas.com/recipes 5. Make them fun. Broccoli sounds way more fun to eat when you call it “a baby tree.”
6. Cook with your kids. Studies show that kids are more likely to eat what’s served when they are involved in the preparation. Use cooking together as an opportunity to crunchy.” “Carrots are orange and long, and they help you see better.”
you’re going to eat what’s in front of you. When your kids start to get hungry for dinner, give them veggies before their meal: try frozen mixed veggies for toddlers or crudités with dip for school-aged kids. 8. Give them a choice. Carrots or zucchini? Squash or spinach? Since food is one of the major ways toddlers show independence, allowing them to choose between what’s already in your fridge makes them feel like they are calling the shots. RENEE JENSEN DIRECTOR OF MOMMY SAVANT on Friendship, Parenthood and Taking a TIME OUT
By Brandyn Randolph “If the relationships and bonds formed as a result of BCMTO and the new Lady Savant Mommies membership programs can save a marriage, prevent you from beating their child(ren), and keep one from taking a “mommy vacation” in your local mental health facility; I have fulfilled my purpose in this life.”-Renee Jensen
Renee Jensen
Renee Jensen is our Mommy Savant Director of Operations and we could not be more excited to have Renee join our team! Besides being an entrepreneur and a Senior Risk Management Advisor in the insurance and financial services field, Renee is the proud creator of the “Bergen County Mommies TIME OUT” group on Facebook. She is a native of the northeast suburbs of Chicago and has two beautiful children, Grace (8) and Dominic (5). If you want to be inspired today, read on! LS: Renee Why did you decide to start “Bergen County Mommies TIME OUT” facebook page BCMTO? RJ: The BCMTO group started all from a desperate attempt at making some new female friends. One evening I posted the following on the Bergen County Moms page: “If anyone wants to get a drink or an appetizer, let me know!”. The post was followed up by over a 150 responses. I discovered I was not the only lonely mom out there craving a more meaningful connection with other women. As a result the BCMTO group was born and has rapidly grown to become an “elite society of nice girls”. LS: Can you give us a snap shot into your life? RJ: I left Chicago in 2004 to “live the dream” out in the mountains. While they were the best years of my life, they were also some of the darkest. I met my ex-husband and we had Grace in 2007. We married when Grace was seven months old. In 2008, I opened an amazing early childhood development/child care center. Shortly thereafter I became pregnant with Dominic and gave birth to him in July of 2009. Becoming a mother, wife, and a business owner and trying to balance it all was no easy task. It was a lot of work and that was when life was good. That year, the seams of my wonderful life started to unravel and I found myself virtually a single mother because my husband had to leave for New Jersey to find work. Due to the real estate/mortgage crisis, both of our businesses started to falter. Fast forward to spring of 2010. He and I had called it quits and he was permanently living back on the east coast. My business was closed and I was on the brink of financial ruin. For months I hung by the last emotional string I had. I had no choice. My children needed me. At the beginning of all of this, I used to be one of those women who thought I could do it alone with the help of my very cool, very in touch, very supportive partner. Girlfriends? Who needs those? An older and much wiser woman left me with these words right before Grace was born. “Make sure you have some good girlfriends. Men just don’t understand.” I looked at her like she was crazy. I replied with this cocky arrogance, “No, no…Tom and I? We are like this”. Lesson learned? ALWAYS listen to the more mature, experienced, and wise. I believe it takes a village to raise a family and it takes a few really awesome girlfriends who get it to keep you sane. If it weren’t for my closest girlfriends back in the mountains, I don’t know if I would have survived the hard times that unexpectedly fell upon me. THOSE WOMEN SAVED MY LIFE. I have been missing that close camaraderie and sisterhood since I moved to New Jersey four years ago. What those women gifted me was peace of mind and focus and I never felt alone. BCMTO is a society of mommies sharing in the joys and pains of this amazing journey. These women come from all different walks of life but have put those differences aside to share in our one single common bond…motherhood.
Helping generations achieve their dreams
LS: Why did you decide to join the Lady Savant Team?
Let’s talk.
RJ: Lady Savant; the women who created it and all of the women affiliated with this amazing organization, embody the true meaning of what I like to call the “Three E’s” of my life. Lady Savant’s mission is to Empower, Enrich, and Enlighten all those they come in contact with. The energy and love that they put in to this mission is pure. We share the same belief that women can do and be anything in this world…with a little help from each other. We believe and have faith in the power of the female spirit.
