A LOOK INSIDE WILLACY COUNTY Historical Museum Hidden behind the seemingly plain walls of the old school on South Seventh Street are treasures that delight those interested in local history and local color. The Willacy County Historical and Community Center is home to varied treasures that range from King and Kenedy Ranch memorabilia to thousands of historical ƉŚŽƚŽŐƌĂƉŚƐ͘ ŚŝƐƚŽƌLJ ďƵī ƚŚĂƚ ĞŶũŽLJƐ reading about the area’s history could spend days in this hometown museum. Among the museum’s ĂƌƟƐƟĐ ƚƌĞĂƐƵƌĞƐ ĂƌĞ Ă ĨĂƐĐŝŶĂƟŶŐ ĐŽůůĞĐƟŽŶ ŽĨ ůŽĐĂů ĂƌƟƐƚ ůŵĞƌ <ŽĐŚĞƌƚ͛Ɛ painted murals on six exterior halls within the museum. WILLACY COUNTY Art League in Raymondville In 1947, a group of eight women gathered for the purpose of organizing the active artists in Willacy County; they decided upon the name “Willacy County Artist Guild” for their group. The elected officers and dues were set at $1 annually. Mrs. George Campbell was elected the Guild’s first president. Objectives and purposes were to be threefold: studying art and cultivating an appreciation for art, encouraging the development of art among county artists and the community, and sponsoring two or more art exhibits annually. The group’s motto, “Life is too short to be little” was chosen; the Lantana was chosen as the Guild’s flower. Green and yellow were selected as the Guild’s colors. Today, the Willacy County Art League meets in the Creative Arts Center, adjacent to the Historical Center. The Art League has about 30 members from throughout the Valley. Discovering the Wild in Willacy
October’s Wild in Willacy Nature Festival invites you to get “up close and personal” with wildlife and regional history on nearby privately-owned area ranches. These tours offer nature lovers the opportunity to view and photograph varied species of birds, butterflies, indigenous and exotic mammals, and perhaps even a glimpse at the elusive Ferruginous Pygmy Owl. Along with birding and wildlife-viewing opportunities for avid and amateur bird watchers, these tours provide excellent opportunities to go inside the gates of private ranches bordering Willacy County. The Wild in Willacy Amateur Wildlife Photography Contest will highlight the work of amateur photographers. Entries will be judged and displayed in the Willacy County Art League building, housed at the Historical Center on 427South 7th St. A Wild in Willacy Poster Contest is open to Willacy County High School students. This contest allows students the opportunity to show their talent and creativity through a Wildlife, Nature & Heritage themed poster. Entries are displayed during the W\Willacy County Art League building. Wild in Willacy strives to offer its guests a better understanding how different ranch owners practice preservation and conservation of our county’s natural wonders. 2014 Ranch tours includes La Chata (division of the Yturria Ranch), San Miguelito Ranch, and Grace Heritage Ranch.

The WCND overseas the Harbor office, land leases and boat stall leases. An airport is available for small aircraft for guests wanting to fly in to visit or fish in the bay.
