MAC Publishing & Media Group, LLC was formed in the kitchen of Ami Yarbrough & Marco Herrera on a rainy day in March 2019. Along with our third business partner, Christine Walker, we hatched a plan to create a community magazine that would be unique to Providence Village, concentrating on building healthy, positive relationships with each other and our small business community. During that initial meeting, we were talking about what to name the magazine. Ami offhandedly said, “Living in Providence Village isn’t just a neighborhood, it’s an experience,” and thus, The Providence Village Experience was born.

BUSINESS PROFILE One June day in 1999, Donna Spurgin and a friend were traveling thru Ruidoso, New Mexico. As their car climbed in elevation, the pair rounded a mountainside when they came to a clearing in the trees.

Donna suddenly asked her friend to stop.

The mountains extended into the distance, and she looked out onto the valley below. The sun’s setting rays dimly cascaded across the peaks, casting a hazy violet hue upon the range. ow! This is purple mountain’s majesty,” Donna reminisced. She snapped the photo, and her love of photography was born.

Born in Celina, Donna has lived in North Texas her entire life.

Semi-retired and doing accounting for a heating and air company in Sanger, Donna started Donna Spurgin Angel Girl Photography in 2005. “My nickname for my granddaughter is Angel Girl,” she stated, and after photographing her granddaughter for years, it became the namesake of her budding business.

The expansive landscapes and small-town histories that she grew up around now inspire Donna’s photography. Alone or with her husband, she drives around North Texas or further, sometimes crossing state lines for art. When asked how she chooses her subjects or where to photograph, “I just know,” she says.

Donna showed me some of her work, which includes the old schoolhouse in Pilot Point, graffiti on the Denton Square and a CD cover for Called Out 129, a contemporary Christian band. You might recognize Donna’s photography from the large print of Providence Village Town Hall hanging in the same building or of the ducks and pond on the cover of our spring magazine.

Fifteen years after Angel Girl Photography was named, Donna enjoys shooting landscape, realty and street photography.

Scrolling through her business Facebook page, the ease with which Donna exposes the authenticity of a space is apparent. She effortlessly facilitates the liveliness of vines crawling up the cornerstone of a forgotten homestead or captures the solitude and hope in an old church off the side of a highway. It’s a lens through which one may never have thought to look at a space; yet, when Donna photographs it, she makes this same essence seem so obvious and real.

Donna only aims to glorify the Lord through her photography, listening to worship music and praying before shooting

a scene. She hopes that her business and passion can bring people joy and open their eyes to the beauty around them.

Donna humbly and genuinely credits all of her photography to God. “He creates all the beauty; I just take pictures of it,” she explained. I asked her if she has any plans or hopes for the growth of her business in the next year. She smiled and replied, “Oh, it’s all up to God. If I try and take control of His plan, I’ll just mess everything up.” With complete faith in His plan and hope that she might bring His power to others through her work, Donna glorifies God in Angel Girl Photography and everything she does.

TIS THE SEASON FOR HAIL Spring is in full force, and hail season is here! Though traditionally thought of as tornado season, there are actually more reports of large hail damage than tornado damage. Are you prepared for it? Do you know who to contact and who to trust if your roof suffers hail damage?

Hail storms bring roofers out of the woodwork from all over the country.

Many of them are “fly-by-night” in town just to make a quick buck, then disappear as quickly as they arrived. It’s important to know who you can trust and who will provide the best service and workmanship. In case there are any lingering problems, you need to have someone trustworthy to follow-up with.

Here are the 4 BIG things you need to know when choosing a roofer: 1. Is the company local? It’s going to be hard to have a company come check for warranty issues or leaks if they live far away.

2. Ask for references! You may know someone, who knows someone that has a 3rd cousin in the roofing business. That doesn’t necessarily make for a good option. Most reputable companies will be more than happy to provide references.

3. Insurance? Yup, that’s important.

There are a lot of companies working right now that do not have insurance.

That’s setting YOU up for something bad happening, so be sure to ask for proof of insurance!

4. Are you going to be on top of your roof during replacement? Probably not...and if you are, do you know what materials are supposed to go on a roof? There is a lot more that goes into a quality roof than just the shingles. Ice and water shield, flashing, underlayment and vents are just a few of the things some companies may skip out on or go cheap on. Ask for a materials list of everything going on the roof, and ask for samples!

Don’t Forget Your Sunglasses This Summer Everyone knows that too much sun exposure is bad for your skin. It can increase your risk for skin cancer and cause pre-mature aging, but did you know that it is just as important to protect your eyes from the sun?

Spending too much time in the sun without proper protection can lead to problems down the road such as macular degeneration, growths on the eye, eyelid cancer, or faster progression of cataracts. It can also cause immediate damage such as a sunburn of the cornea, which can be very painful.

These problems are caused by UVA and UVB rays, which is why it is important to protect yourself by wearing a wide brimmed hat or by wearing sunglasses with at least 99% to 100% UV protection. Sunglasses with a bigger lens or ones that wrap around are the best because they will offer more coverage.

Regular visits to your eye doctor are important even if you are taking the precautions to protect your eyes.

GINGER LIME-AID Ingredients: 6 Fresh Limes 1 Tsp. diced Ginger Root 2 Tbsp. Honey or Agave Tonic Water or Sprite In a saucepan over medium heat, add 1/4 cup water and grated ginger and bring to a boil for 15 minutes. Strain out the ginger and add honey or agave and then continue to simmer on low heat until it begins to thicken.

Halve 5 limes and squeeze into a pitcher, add ginger syrup and mix.

Add Ice and Tonic water or Sprite and mix. Serve over ice with lime slice and/or candied ginger for garnish.

For a little more kick, add Gin or try using ginger-ale in lieu of the ginger syrup and tonic water.

Safeguarding Your Pets in the North Texas Heat We all love and adore our fur babies, and it’s so important to keep them healthy and safe during the extreme summer heat we experience in North Texas.

Even if your pets do not spend all day outside, a short amount of time in our hellish heat can wreak havoc on their little bodies, causing heat exhaustion or heat stroke that can lead to death.

The Humane Society explains that signs of potential heat stroke include glazed eyes, excessive drooling, rapid heart rate, dizziness or lack of coordination, fever, lethargy and loss of consciousness. Early warning signs can be subtle – it may be as simple as becoming less responsive to commands. If there is any question at all, get your dog out of the heat.

Temperatures between 103º–106ºF or higher put your beloved pup in the danger zone for heat stroke, during which the organs begin to shut down, and their heart could stop altogether. Even if life-saving measures are successful, they could have long-term organ damage.

The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation expands on the symptoms, warning that a dog may collapse or experience convulsions, exhibit vomiting or diarrhea and may also have gums or a tongue that turns blue or bright red.

The following are just a few commonsense tips to keep in mind as Texas temperatures soar into the triple digits. Prevention is the BEST cure!

If your pet is left outside during the day, make sure there is a shady place for the rest. Keep in mind that the forecasted temperature is taken in the shade and does not account for the humidity or “real feel,” which can increase the effects of heat dramatically.

Don’t leave your pets outside for longer than necessary. Better to keep them indoors while at work and hire a company like Fur Services Fur Pets or a trusted neighbor to come in during the day for potty breaks and walks.

Save walking your dog until late evening to allow sidewalks and pavement to cool down, as they can burn your pet’s paws.

A Summer Guide to the Perfect Local Getaway When you’re ready for a bite to eat, stop by Powerhouse Pilot Point Burger just off the square or Ernesto’s for a delicious TexStrolling through the Square in Pilot Point, colorful doorways line the sidewalk of a curious collection of shops. Many of them vintage and antique curio stores, you are bound to find something unique during a little daytime shopping at Martin’s General Store or browsing the Museum at the old Farmer’s and Merchant’s Bank. This same bank was used in the film Bonnie and Clyde, which is celebrated during Pilot Point’s annual Bonnie and Clyde festival in October. If you’re feeling outdoorsy, you can relax on the beach at Lake Ray Roberts or enjoy a hike on one of their many trails. Lake Ray Roberts Lake Ray Roberts State Park is the perfect one-stop destination for summer fun. It’s like having a scenic, outdoor playground in our own backyard. You can spend a day on the water, hike the numerous trails around the wooded hillside, or spend a whole weekend camping on the waterfront.

Known as one of the best bass fishing lakes in Texas, Lake Ray Roberts has plenty of ways to spend time on the water. You can drop a boat in at one of the many docks and go fishing, or simply cruise across the 29,000-acre lake. If you visit the marina in Sanger, you can rent boats or kayaks to explore the waters.

Want to spend a relaxing day on the beach with family or friends? Head over to the Isle du Bois entrance off of FM 455 in Pilot Point. Driving through the park, you’ll pass campgrounds and nature trails until the park road ends at a large beach. Pick a spot, layout the beach towels and soak up the summer sun or dip into the lake to cool down.

If inland action is more up your alley, Lake Ray Roberts has miles of trails for hiking, biking, rollerblading and horse riding. The popular DORBA trail at Isle du Bois allows several trail options, including space for a leisurely stroll or up to 5 miles of hiking and biking if you follow the full path. On the northern side of the lake, Johnson Branch offers lesstraveled trails.

If you don’t want to have to pick and choose what to enjoy at the lake, spend a weekend there, camping along the waterside and taking in everything the park has to offer. Whatever you decide, summer is made under the Texas sun at Lake Ray Roberts.

Aubrey Main Street in downtown Aubrey boasts colorful shop windows and unique restaurants. Start your morning with a hot cup of coffee and a down-home, southern breakfast at Upper Park Café or Mom’s on Main. Craving something sweet? Step into Nancy Cates Bakeshop. With sweet smells and a feels-like-home vibe, this bakery offers delicious takes on your favorite cookies made from grandma’s recipes. Right next door, amuse yourself with a little local Aubrey shopping at Casey & Co. Boutique. This quaint shop presents an array of cute women’s clothes, school spirit wear, fashionable jewelry, shoes and decor. However, what they are most recognized for is their hand dipped candle collection and selection of bath and body goodies. In October, be sure to come up to the Peanut Festival, an annual celebration of the old Aubrey cash crop that includes live music and family fun. As an added bonus, be sure to check out Bebo’s on a Friday night for a delicious chicken fried steak. You might even catch a live Elvis performance!

Tioga Tioga breathes with the easiness of an ole cowboy town in the heart of horse country. The home of music legend Gene Autry, downtown Tioga is a charming strip of shops and restaurants.

Most people notably visit Clark’s BBQ, a heralded hot spot for delicious barbecue.

Founded in 1974, Clark’s is raved about by locals and in national magazines, and it is the perfect spot for a Texassized lunch or dinner.

Just across the road on Autry Street, other dining options include Geno’s Pizzeria and Medina’s Mexican restaurant.

You’ll find a little afternoon shopping at Tioga Mercantile.

This western strip is also the home to Elite Custom Saddles, a local business crafting artistic, durable and functional saddles, tack and leatherwear.

The dream of Western Son Vodka was launched in 2011 and currently resides in a 30,000 square foot building that was formerly The Old Panty Factory. They donate a portion of the profits from each bottle of Western Son to the Peter Burks Unsung Hero Fund, a nonprofit organization dedicated to collecting and delivering care packages to deployed military.

LANDON WINERY, MCKINNEY Landon’s winemaking experience dates back to 1989 as vinter Bob Landon tried his hand at making wine in the basement. His perseverance paid off, and he successfully segued from basement wine making to being one of the largest wineries in Texas since opening in 2005. Their stainless-steel tanks and American & French barrels, as well as Bourbon barrel aged wine, are just a few examples of what you will find in their process. Stop by for a tour and sampling of some of the wines in production.

ARMADILLO ALE WORKS, DENTON Every drop of Armadillo Ale Works beer is brewed on-site, housed in an old railway grain warehouse constructed in the early 1900’s. The taproom and coffee shop offer an enormous spectrum of their creations in a relaxed environment with an indoor beer garden vibe. They host a plethora of special beer releases, rare tappings, live music and all-around fun brewery events.

From coffee to beer to sodas, if they can brew it, they will do it!

DENTON COUNTY BREWING COMPANY, DENTON DCBC is a locally owned, independent craft brewery. They serve beer born and brewed in Denton, alongside guest taps, wines, ciders, sake and plenty of positive vibes. Take your average craft beer bar and crank up the fun. Think of an adult playground; complete with board games, trivia nights, delicious appetizers and the coolest bar staff in the game.

HOWLING MUTT BREWING COMPANY, DENTON The company was started like many craft breweries, two guys brewing beer out of their house wanting

something more. In 2018 they decided it was time to show what they’d learned and secured a location off the Denton Square. Being from Denton, these two wanted to give back to the community that helped grow their desire. They only worked with local businesses when possible and displayed art from local artists while paying homage to local craft breweries that have paved the way for breweries such as theirs.

TUPPS BREWERY, MCKINNEY TUPPS believes beer is the perfect blend of art and science and that beer is greatly enhanced when consumed in the company of close friends or random people who will soon be good friends. At the brewery, they have created an environment that embraces the feel and the era of the historic Cotton Mill. When you visit, keep in mind they want you to embrace the brewery, so put your feet on the tables, write your name on the wall and bring old bottles to add to their bottle tree farm.

Mind, Body & Soul bleach & lysol to protect your immune system?

During this time of uncertainty and adaptations with COVID-19, the word that keeps popping up is immunity.

We are being told to build up our immune systems and hearing that strong immune systems fare better against the Corona virus than compromised ones.

But what does it mean to build up our immune system? How do we even do that? Most people relate strong immune systems to healthy diet and regular exercise while decreasing exposure to things that can affect our system. And yes, healthy diets and regular exercise are important. But what about other things that can affect us…cleaners, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, detergent, sunscreen, make-up and so much more! Think about things you put ON your body. Our skin is our biggest organ, and what we put on it (intentional and nonintentional) is absorbed into our bloodstream within 20 seconds.

So, consider bleach and Lysol, both common products heavily used to sanitize. Hopefully you don’t intentionally rub them on your body, but you are coming into contact with them, whether it be through touching, inhaling or the fumes that stay airborne for up to 72 hours. Have you ever read the label on those items? Rinse all toys and food contact surfaces with potable water after use, Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling, Use with adequate ventilation.

And if that’s not enough to concern you, what you won’t see on the labels is that they are registered PESTICIDES with the Environmental Protection Agency. They are highly toxic. Why would anyone want that in their home, around family and pets?

it’s time for finding clarity clari ty

This is a �me of change. Unprecedented. A lot of us are asking, what is going to happen next? The answer is… Next we heal.

We first heal ourselves and then our beau�ful planet we are so blessed to be a part of. A seemingly simple task, and yet it won’t be easy. It will involve shu�ng up and listening for once. We must learn to sit and listen to the screaming, crying silence of our minds. When we are forced to stop the running around and have �me to just be, we finally get to look at the reali�es we have so long denied. Pushed into shadow. Where they became our vices. Parts of ourselves we deny, repress Lea Goin and suppress. Those parts of our upbringing that we have convinced ourselves weren’t so bad CLARITY WITH LEA because it wasn’t as bad as the other guy, or everyone went through the same abuse.

But the �me has come to open these large backpacks we carry, full of our denied experiences, and unpack them.

Slowly. And allow ourselves to feel, really feel, and subsequently heal each part. And as we do this, we heal each other and our whole planet as well. We no longer have a choice.

Medita�on, mindfulness prac�ce, bringing awareness to our thoughts and our underlying belief systems, finding clarity. It’s not just for seekers anymore, it is now something everyone needs to embrace. For the sake of us all.

Today we propose Our new silly words So our nonsense is more, no less.”

Beezus stood and solemnly Pushed her glasses up her nose.

New Sillies are a serious sell.

She cleared her throat To command the room And her Sillies she began to tell.

“I propose whapdoodle and the incomparable geegs geegs..

They’re valuable verbs that everyone needs.

For adjec�ves, well, the list goes no further Than bibimous bibimous,, foozlegut foozlegut,, rupdiddle rupdiddle,, and sleeb sleeb.”.”

Gus interrupted his fellow Brigademan And raised his hand to the sky.

“Perhaps we consider Adding ‘hazzlebut’ for ‘bi�er’” He whispered his submission so shy.

In uproarious laughter, The Brigade con�nues, Their fearless leader a�en�ve.

It means “something’s amiss, But it’s not wrong or right, In a fun, unpredictable way.”

And the gavel sounds once more.

So stood the Brigade Hands to their brows, Eyes twinkling with purpose and pride To pronounce the hymn Uni�ng them all In their effort to save humankind.
