Create a space you love to live in.

If you are newlyweds combining households, soon-to-be parents, becoming empty nesters, starting a new life after a divorce or separation, or aging in place, you are in transition. And as we move into these new phases of life, sometimes the spaces we live in no longer serve us. Oftentimes, our living spaces need to adjust along with us. Wherever you are in your journey, it's time to create a space specifically for you and your needs. With you in mind, create a plan to fit the individual pieces together to give the function and feel you want and need. You want your space to work for you – not against you. From ceiling lighting to flooring choices, wall or tile color to fabrics and textures, you can create a space you love to live in.

It doesn’t have to be complicated. Often, it’s just knowing how to rearrange the home with existing furnishings to accomplish the feel and function you want. Transitioning your space doesn't have to be expensive, though, it can be if you want to go big. Simple things like fresh paint on the wall, new decorative pillows or just rearranging furniture can make a big impact and freshen up outdated spaces. Remove clutter and focus a few nice things, such as a piece of furniture or art, a new rug, a bold floor lamp or even a large plant.

Life is full of transition. Some changes are by choice – but not always. -Becky Smith

Don’t see what your home is – see what it could be. The walls, lights, colors and textures – visualize how all the individual pieces fit together to give you the feel and function you want. Wherever you are in your journey, create beautiful spaces as you build your life.

Age is Just a Number Young Entrepreneurs Boost Business in Providence Village Story by: Ashley Cook

You’ve likely heard about those “30 Under 30” lists that praise young business owners below a certain age for achieving greatness. What if one of those lists featured three entrepreneurs ranging from ten to seventeen years old? And the best part is that you don’t have to look further than Providence Village to meet them. Schyler Wilson, Eowyn Dautrich and Sophia Benton are three inspiring young ladies in our neighborhood who have started and grown their own businesses. From lemonade to pets, they’re serving our community in amazing ways and are living proof of how age does not equal success.

It’s Time to Poop Scoop & Boogie! There’s nothing like getting your first car. The feel of the seats. The hum of the engine. The thrill of cruising down the highway. The mark of teen independence is getting behind the wheel of your very first ride. Saving up to enjoy that four-wheeled-freedom is a dirty job, but someone has to do it. And for Schyler Wilson, owner of Poop Scoop & Boogie, that someone is her. In the early days of the pandemic, Schyler was facing a major milestone in life – getting her first car. And as all car owners know, with that responsibility comes expenses, like gas and insurance. Wanting to get a head start on saving, Schyler started brainstorming ways to make some extra side cash. With school taking up most of her days, she knew she needed something with flexibility, and because she was only fifteen, she knew most places wouldn’t be able to hire her. So, she took matters into her own hands and started her own company – a pet waste removal and yard clean-up service. Schyler first focused on yards within Providence Village, her home since 2017. She originally lived in Midland, Texas before her family settled here in Providence Village. Schyler is a major fan of Providence Village and enjoys all the activities the neighborhood offers. She loves the community feel, namely the block parties on her street, but she really gets excited about seeing all the dogs. It wasn’t long until word got out about Schyler’s stellar poopscooping services. Soon, people in other communities started contacting her, wanting her to clean up after their pets, too. Now, on any given weekend, Schyler drives up to Silverado and Pilot Point to clear out even more canine “landmines.” Schyler has a huge heart for dogs and someday dreams about having some land and a huge barn where she can own and play with tons of dogs. Just as quickly as Schyler shared that dream, she laughed and realized just how much poop-scooping that might entail. 8 | Summer 2021

From Paws to a Cause:

Paws & Claws Pet Sitting

When it’s time to leave your house, whether for a long day of work or a weekend trip, you want a top-notch sitter to care for your pet. You want someone who is professional, has practical know-how and connects lovingly with your fur baby. There’s nothing truly more comforting than knowing your pets are in wonderful hands and that you’ll return to a clean, calm and peaceful home. This is the level of excellent service Eowyn Dautrich provides her pet-sitting and poop-scooping clients. Eowyn first started her Paws and Claws Pet Sitting company back when she was fundraising for volleyball as a preteen. Now a junior in high school, Eowyn continues to love on Providence Village pets as a way to fund her high school sports and initiatives. Eowyn has a deep love for all animals and enjoys connecting with them and caring for them, regardless if they’re a dog, cat, bird or guinea pig. Pretty much no creature is off-limits for her. Often called “the animal whisperer,” Eowyn has a special gift for calming the most nervous of pets. When asked where she got this special gift, Eowyn gave full credit to her grandmother. Eowyn recounted how animals were somehow magnetically drawn to her Nana. It was like she could have an “eye-to-eye” conversation with them. Eowyn loves lavishing this same care and connection on the pets she serves. She not only does this as part of her business, but she also volunteers her time with area animal rescues. Whether it’s finding new homes for abandoned pets or bringing runaways off the streets, Eowyn believes every animal deserves a caring, loving environment.

Eowyn’s human clients rave about her exceptionally good care and how she pampers the fur babies all throughout the neighborhood. Next year, Eowyn graduates from high school and is excited to apply her passions in college. She hopes to study either engineering or environmental law. Her goal is to focus on improving our communities, climates and ecosystems so both people and animals can thrive. Eowyn’s dreams are a testament to her core belief that no creature is beyond rescue or love. continued on next page

When Life Gives You Lemons, Take Them to Sophia’s Lemonade Stand What do you do when life gives you lemons? For ten-year-old Sophia Benton, it’s all about whipping up some sweet, thirst-quenching lemonade – organic lemonade, that is. Three years ago, when she was in first grade, Sophia started talking with her mom about the challenges children face when fighting cancer. The two of them started thinking of ways they could help families afford the expensive treatments. It was from this conversation that Sophia created her lemonade business. Soon after, she was selling freshly-squeezed lemonade to the residents of Providence Village. Because Sophia wanted to help for more than just one year, she knew she needed a wellbuilt lemonade stand, so she asked her uncle to construct one. Wanting the best for his niece, Sophia’s uncle designed and built her a lemonade stand – one that’s sturdy enough to travel around the neighborhood. On any given spring or summer weekend, it’s not uncommon to see Sophia in her stand handing out cups of icecold lemonade to a long line of eagerly awaiting residents. In Sophia’s eyes, opening a lemonade stand has never been about the money. It’s the opportunity to improve the lives of children and animals. Sophia donates every penny she earns to nonprofits that fight childhood cancer and help animals in need. Sophia dearly loves her neighborhood. She’s even helped raise funds for neighborhood residents

who were battling cancer and struggling to have children of their own. When asked what she loves most about serving lemonade in Providence Village, Sophia grinned and said, “Everybody’s nice to each other. It’s pretty cool. Everybody’s friends, and kids are everywhere.” Sara, Sophia’s mom, shared proudly about her daughter, “She’s always been really giving. It blows me away. She never even asks if she can keep five dollars. I’m just in awe of her all the time.” Even at such a young age, Sophia knows that while life may hand you lemons, sometimes that’s what makes it so sweet.

These Young Business Ladies

These three young entrepreneurs have huge ambitions and even larger hearts. They bring smiles and comfort to many of us in Providence Village each and every week. Schyler Wilson, Eowyn Dautrich and Sophia Benton are inspiring reminders to all of us that you don’t need a high school degree or even a driver’s license to chase a dream. 10 | Summer 2021

ice cream cake

ANGIE'S RECIPE CORNER

ingredients

directions

8" cake of your choice (prepared)* 1 qt ice cream* 9 sandwich cookies* 1½ tbsp butter 6 oz chocolate chips* 3 tbsp light corn syrup 1/2 cup heavy cream 1 tsp vanilla extract 16 oz buttercream frosting* sprinkles, decorating sugars, candies, etc. * use homemade or store-bought versions and flavors of your choice!

Prepare the ganache: Place selected chips in a bowl. Add the corn syrup and vanilla extract. Warm the heavy cream until just before boiling. Pour over the chips, and let sit for a few minutes. This should start melting the chips. Mix well until all combined. Set aside, in the fridge if needed, to thicken a little. Scrape out the filling of the sandwich cookies. Melt the butter. Crumble the cookies, pour the butter over them and bake for 8 min at 350F. Let cool off, set aside. Take ice cream out of the freezer to soften, (approx 10 min). You will build and freeze your cake in a deep baking dish lined with plastic wrap. Spring mold cheesecake pans are ideal for this and helps with the unmolding. Once you have baked your cake, slice it in half, to end up with two 1-inch (approx) tall cake layers. Place the bottom layer inside your deep dish, on top of the plastic wrap. Add half the ice cream by spooning it in and smoothing it over. Put the ice cream back in the freezer. Sprinkle the cooled cookie crunch, making a uniform layer. Pour the ganache over and spread. If it's a bit runny, don’t worry. Place in the freezer for 30 minutes to help solidify. Take the ice cream out of the freezer to soften, approx 5 min. Spoon the rest of the ice cream on top of the ganache layer. Cover with the second cake layer. This is the bottom of your cake. Back in the freezer it goes for at least 30 min (or longer). Once you feel the cake is sturdy enough to unmold and frost, put your serving platter over it and flip it over (or unmold on it if using a spring mold pan). Peel off the plastic wrap. You can do one thin layer of frosting and place in the freezer (this called “the crumb coat”) or just finish frosting and decorating it. Place in the freezer until 5-10 min before serving it. Enjoy!

Going on a road trip with your dog is a great way to create lifelong memories while building the bond between you and your dog. Dogs spend the majority of their lives confined to the walls of our homes. Taking them on a road trip is a great way for them to get out and explore the world. Last summer, I took two of my dogs on a 3,000 mile road trip along the eastern half of the United States. We hiked, kayaked and camped along our route. Following are my top tips for making sure a road trip with your dog goes smoothly. Keep food, treats, water, bowls, leashes, poop bags and meds easily accessible

Utilize apps to find pet friendly accommodations and activities

Make a packing list and bring items based on the activities you will be doing

Pet ID & Documentation

National Parks vs National Forests

Bring prescription medication with you and bring more than you need

NEVER leave your pet unattended inside of your car

Minimizing Costs When Insuring Teen Drivers Obtaining a driver’s license and car is every teen’s dream. They look forward to the day when they will finally be able to take the driver's seat and cruise around town with their friends. If you have a teenager who is itching to get behind the wheel, it is wise to prepare yourself AND budget for the additional premium cost of insuring your teen.

18 | Summer 2021

Insurance premiums are higher for teen drivers. Why? Because insurance companies see young drivers as great risks. The probability that your teen will have an accident is a lot higher compared to that of an older driver. The good news is, there are several ways to save on your teen's auto insurance! Good Student Discount Studies show that teenage drivers with higher grades are more responsible than those who receive lower grades in school. If you want to save money on your teen's auto insurance, encourage them to aim for a B average or higher. Some insurance companies may offer as much as a 10% discount for teens. Car Choice Matters Your teen might be hoping for a sports car they can show off to their friends. Insurance providers view sports cars as an increased risk, thus increasing insurance premiums. Teens, being inexperienced drivers, are already in the high-risk category. Getting a safe,

more practical car is your best bet. You might also want to forward any VIN numbers to your insurance agent to obtain a more accurate estimate of the proposed premium.

Safe Driving Apps Many companies offer discounts that could be as high as 15% for enrolling in programs that help monitor distracted driving and can also offer analysis and feedback on driving patterns. Not only can these programs offer significant savings, but they also provide additional protection for your teen and loved ones. Additional Discounts Have you considered bundling your auto, home or renters, RV, boat, or other policies? Bundling policies offers one of the biggest discounts available and could certainly help offset the cost of adding your teen driver. Contact the Kiesling Insurance Agency for additional cost-saving information on any of your insurance needs. We're here to make sure you have the best coverage possible!

TIS THE SEASON FOR HAIL

Spring is in full force, and hail season is here! Though traditionally thought of as tornado season, there are actually more reports of large hail damage than tornado damage. Are you prepared for it? Do you know who to contact and who to trust if your roof suffers hail damage?

Hail storms bring roofers out of the woodwork from all over the country. Many of them are “fly-by-night” in town just to make a quick buck, then disappear as quickly as they arrived. It’s important to know who you can trust and who will provide the best service and workmanship. In case there are any lingering problems, you need to have someone trustworthy to follow-up with. Here are the BIG 4 things you need to know when choosing a roofer: 1. Is the company local? It’s going to be hard to have a company come check for warranty issues or leaks if they live far away.

2. Ask for references! You may know someone, who knows someone that has a 3rd cousin in the roofing business. That doesn’t necessarily make for a good option. Most reputable companies will be more than happy to provide references.

3. Insurance? Yup, that’s important. There are a lot of companies working right now that do not have insurance. That’s setting YOU up for something bad happening, so be sure to ask for proof of insurance! 4. Are you going to be on top of your roof during replacement? Probably not...and if you are, do you know what materials are supposed to go on a roof? There is a lot more that goes into a quality roof than just the shingles. Ice and water shield, flashing, underlayment and vents are just a few of the things some companies may skip out on or go cheap on. Ask for a materials list of everything going on the roof and ask for samples!

At Roofing Reformation, we stand behind our work and provide an annual workman’s warranty. When we replace your roof, we will provide a free inspection and correction, giving your roof the longest life possible. We will correct any exposed nails that may come up and re-caulk vents and piping to prevent future leaks from dried out caulking. If you have questions about your roof, give us a call today! Goulash, Supreme Pizza and Pistachio Froyo

A Recipe for a Remarkable Neighborhood Story by: Ashley Cook

Steve & Lias North, Owner of Mission Pizza Klaus Dausmann, Owner of The Crazy German

Stojan Bacev, Owner of Pooky’s Famous Yogurt

At first glance, you might not think a hearty German stew, an Italian-American classic and a sweet treat all have the same thing in common. But in Providence Village, they do. Three of our town’s residents are especially passionate about whipping up delicious dishes and memorable moments to our area. From The Crazy German to Mission Pizza to Pooky’s Famous Yogurt, each brings their own unique backgrounds from around the world right into the homes and on the plates of Providence Village.

Pooky’s Famous Yogurt: It’s time to chill! It cools you on a hot day. It comforts you during the winter. It’s there to celebrate your victories and cheer up even the saddest of moods. Perhaps now more than ever, frozen yogurt continues to be the go-to choice for millions of Americans looking for a fun, sweet treat. And here in Providence Village, you don’t have to look any further than Pooky’s Famous Yogurt. But Pooky’s Famous Yogurt is so much more than a delicious froyo shop. Stojan Bacev, the founder of Pooky’s, opened up Pooky’s with a larger mission in mind. Originally from Macedonia, Stojan moved to Denton so he could study computer engineering at the University of North Texas. In 2010, he moved to Providence Village to raise his two girls,

but he soon realized that there weren’t many places for kids to play or hang out. At the time, he already had a bustling frozen yogurt shop in Denton, so he looked for a spot closer to home. He soon found the perfect location, and Pooky’s opened its doors. Stojan wanted to provide more than just frozen yogurt to area residents. He wanted to create a fun, safe atmosphere for kids and families to hang out – from the couches up front to the kids’ playroom in the back. For the older crowd wanting a more chill atmosphere, Pooky’s offers a comfortable lounging area at the front of their shop. Stojan wanted to create

that relaxing local coffee shop feel where students or adults could come to work or just unwind. He knew he needed more than frozen yogurt to help with that, so he expanded the menu to include shakes, smoothies and a full coffee bar. Pooky’s roasts their beans in-house and offers signature favorites that range from your traditional hot and iced classics to the more adventurous Turkish and Greek coffees. The mission of Pooky’s is a deeply personal one for Stojan, and you can see that in the very name of Pooky’s itself. Pooky’s was coined after his youngest daughter’s nickname, and the fun-loving monkey logo was based on the nickname of his other daughter.

Pooky’s is also passionate about celebrating those in our community, specifically when it comes to students and teachers. It’s not uncommon to hear the name “Pooky’s” through the halls of area elementary schools. From free breakfasts to frozen yogurt treats, Stojan is constantly looking for ways to honor our local teachers. But he doesn’t stop there. Each week, students can also earn “Pooky’s Student of the Week” certificates for a frozen yogurt treat. Stojan has a heart for Providence Village and loves going above and beyond to bring smiles to our residents. After being asked what type of frozen yogurt best describes Providence Village, Stojan chuckled and said, “Pistachio...

Look for Pooky’s Froyo this Summer at the Main Pool in Providence!!

but then with all kinds of crazy toppings. We have a lot of different people here with different opinions and backgrounds. And it all fits together.”

The Crazy German: Sausaging Around “Gemütlichkeit” is a German word that describes the feeling you get when you’re with people you love. Everyone is eating, drinking and laughing. Everyone belongs, and all feels right. It’s a saying that Klaus Dausmann, owner of The Crazy German, seeks to bring to others through his food. Born and raised in a small town in southwestern Germany, Klaus decided at the age of 15 to become a butcher apprentice. He quickly realized it wasn’t for him, so he joined the military. But the love for cooking never left, so once Klaus completed his military duty, he then became

a trained chef. Klaus loved the creativity of cooking and was excited to bring his culinary skills with him when he immigrated to the United States. After first landing in Florida, Klaus eventually found himself in Providence Village. Though he worked in construction-related jobs, Klaus never abandoned his passion for sharing his culture and home with others through food. In September 2019, Klaus opened The Crazy German food trailer, and it was an instant hit. Providence Village residents raved, saying that the brats and currywurst were the “best they ever had.” But a few short months later, the pandemic hit, and restaurants bore 24 | Summer 2021

the brunt. Klaus started running into challenges with his food trailer and decided to shift gears. The time had come for The Crazy German to find a permanent location. As for the food trailer, Klaus had another idea in mind. He teamed up with local barbeque champion Greg Fachner to offer mouthwatering Texas barbeque for area residents on the go. For Klaus, German food is comfort food – from a simmering pot of goulash to the creamy richness of a flammkuchen (a thin flatbread-like dish topped with bacon and onions). Klaus is passionate about providing the highest quality dishes using the freshest

produce and meats. Because of this, he doesn’t import any ingredients, which is a common practice in other German restaurants. He instead partners with area vendors, ranging from a local baker to his partner in Muenster who makes Klaus’ sausages using his exclusive recipe. Klaus sees every meal he makes as an opportunity to share a piece of his childhood and his love of Texas. Whether it’s a juicy traditional brat or a unique Texas spin on a German classic, Klaus loves to show off his German-Texas pride. When it comes to cooking, Klaus

is all about creating “Gemütlichkeit” – that friendly, warm feeling where all is right. When asked, “If Providence Village was a German dish, what dish would it be?,” Klaus laughed and without missing a beat, answered, “I’d say it definitely would be goulash. It has a lot of ingredients, and they all mix together. We have people from all walks of life [and] different backgrounds. And sometimes, there’s a lot of heat. But when it comes down to it, we all stick together. I’d definitely say Providence Village would be a version of goulash.”

Mission Pizza: Sauce for a Cause There’s nothing like biting into a gooey, cheesy slice of piping hot pizza. The sauce, the toppings, that perfect crust – it’s truly magical. From Chicago deep dish to the classic New York slice to the traditional Neapolitan, every place seems to have its own unique type of pizza to offer. But there’s likely one style you’ve never heard of – South Shore bar style. It’s a pizza known almost exclusively to those in the South Shore area, a region southeast of Boston, Massachusetts. Those who know this pizza can instantly recognize it by its 10” size, tangy-sweet tomato sauce and uniquely caramelized crust.

Tucked away like a hidden treasure, this quirky pizza from the 1940s has remained largely undiscovered by outsiders – until recently. Only a few have dared to take it beyond its native South Shore region, and when they do, it seems to become an instant success. No one knows this better than Steve North, resident of Providence Village and native to the South Shore. After moving to Providence Village, Steve missed the pizza from back home, so he looked up some recipes and started making them for his wife and kids. Before long, neighbors, coworkers and friends were asking for Steve’s South Shore bar pizzas. As word got out, more and more wanted to try this delicious, eccentric concoction.

Around this time, the pandemic hit, and the company that Steve and his wife, Lais, both work for took a major hit. To supplement their income, they started investing more time into the growing popularity of their pizzas. Soon, Mission Pizza was born. Mission Pizza is all about providing that South Shore style experience to Providence Village. While traditional style is offered, most of the menu focuses on bringing the South Shore flare to tried-and-true classics, as well as more unique options like their popular BBQ Brisket or Soppressata Special. Each South Shore pizza has the classic “laced” edges and is cooked in wellseasoned 10” pans.

What started as a meal for his wife and kids has now grown into a much larger mission. Steve and Lais have a major passion for helping their community and those in need. Lais, who grew up in Brazil, witnessed extreme poverty, and Steve himself saw homelessness and poverty from his childhood trips into Boston. Because of their heart to help others, Mission Pizza donates one pizza for every ten sold. These donated pizzas go towards a person or family who is experiencing food insecurity in our community. It’s no secret that those in Providence Village love their pizza. When asked what type of pizza Providence Village

would be, Steve smiled and answered, “I would say supreme. It’s a mixture of everything that all comes together to form a really delicious pizza and community.”

It’s one thing to capture the taste buds of our residents – it’s another to also capture their hearts. The Crazy German, Mission Pizza and Pooky’s Famous Yogurt continue to go above and beyond to delight the palate while also making our community a better place. There’s truly no better recipe than that. Summer 2021 | 25

Mind, Body & Soul Boost Your Immune System with Vitamin IV Therapy The demands of daily life can weaken even the strongest immune system. Chronic stress, poor diet choices, lack of sleep and autoimmune disorders are some of the things that can weaken our immune system. If you’ve noticed that you aren’t feeling like you usually do or are getting sick more frequently than normal, your immune system may need a boost. Frequent illnesses, infections and a persistent feeling of fatigue can all be signs that your immune system is not functioning like it should be. Fortunately, you can support immune system health with a vitamin IV therapy.

B-Complex Vitamins

How IV Therapy Boosts Your Immune System

IV Hydration

Dr. Olga Cortez

When it comes to boosting your immune system, there are plenty of antioxidant-rich foods you can eat and over-the-counter supplements you can take. Vitamin IV therapy is a new tool you can add to your defense against cold and flu symptoms. Vitamin IV therapy can improve your immune system by delivering all the vitamins and antioxidants you need directly to your cells. Immune-boosting oral supplements are a great option. However, your body doesn’t fully absorb this type of supplement since they are first processed by your digestive system. When administered intravenously by way of IV therapy, on the other hand, these same immune-boosting vitamins bypass the digestive system and ensure a 100% absorption rate. At the same time, IV therapy naturally detoxifies and hydrates your body, removing harmful free radicals that contribute to toxin buildup and impaired immune function.

Immune Boosting Vitamins included in a Vitamin IV Drip Vitamin C

An antioxidant vitamin that helps your body remove excess free radicals which can cause cellular damage. In addition to preventing this damage, Vitamin C helps maintain your muscles, bones, immune system and your circulatory system.

A complex of B1/Thiamine, B2/Riboflavin, B3/Niacin, B5/ Dexpanthenol and B6/Pyridoxine. These B Vitamins perform a range of vital functions including cardiovascular support, helping your body convert food into energy, and immune function.

Glutathione

Also known as the master antioxidant, this antioxidant detoxifies your body, provides immune system support and removes free radicals. While not a vitamin, IV hydration is an essential part of our Immune Boost IV. Staying hydrated ensures that your cells have the fluids they need to operate at their best. Hydration is important whether you are trying to prevent a cold or are trying to recover from an illness. Illness puts greater demands on your body because of the extra energy your cells need to fend off microscopic invaders, so it’s using more fluid than usual to get the job done. Vitamin IV therapy is a convenient way to give your body the tools it needs to keep your immune system strong and ready to fight illness. If you have already caught the flu or a cold, IV therapy can give your immune system the boost it needs to bring relief from your symptoms and help speed along your recovery. LEARN MORE!

Don’t Forget Your Sunglasses This Summer by Holly Coppedge Everyone knows that too much sun exposure is bad for your skin. It can increase your risk for skin cancer and cause premature aging, but did you know that it is just as important to protect your eyes from the sun? Spending too much time in the sun without proper protection can lead to problems down the road such as macular degeneration, growths on the eye, eyelid cancer, or faster progression of cataracts. It can also cause immediate damage such as a sunburn of the cornea, which can be very painful.

Sunglasses with a bigger lens or ones that wrap around are best because they offer more coverage. Regular visits to your eye doctor are important even if you are taking the precautions to protect your eyes. Catching problems in the early stages will give you the best chance to avoid any painful procedures or permanent damage.

These problems are caused by UVA and UVB rays, which is why it is important to protect yourself by wearing a wide brimmed hat and/or sunglasses with at least 99% to 100% UV protection.
