ark Twain once said, “When the end of the world comes, I want to be in Kentucky because everything there happens twenty years after it happens anywhere else.â€? Fortunately, you’re right here in beautiful Pagosa Springs and the world keeps turning. Thanks for sharing your time with us! When the 2017 Thingamajig Theatre Summer Season was announced and patrons saw the shows included in the lineup, I knew that we had an opportunity to both entertain our audiences and help facilitate discussions about important issues that our country continues to grapple with. These musicals spark a vibrant conversation of race, equality, poverty, violence, innocence, desperation, and hope. They are stories that speak to my heart and scream to my conscience. Our cast of artists this summer has so much in common with Tracy Turnblad (HAIRSRPAY) – in her compulsion to stand up for what’s right, and to be the voice for those who are too scared or unable to speak up. It is a dream of mine to present these shows – to bring this conversation to life as only theatre can, and I am deeply humbled to present these stories with an incredible team of actors and designers. I am thrilled with the possibility of these musicals bringing people together. HAIRSPRAY, AIDA, BIG RIVER and SISTER ACT are intelligent, entertaining, and timely choices for Thingamajig Theatre at this point in history. With tensions high, the conversation of the racial divide in America is as vital as ever. Voices are UDLVHG ĆŹUHV DUH EXUQLQJ DQG \HW YRLFHV DUH going unheard. We desperately need to hear RQH DQRWKHU DQG OLVWHQ VR WKDW ZH FDQ ĆŹQG understanding. In BIG RIVER, the echoes of slavery are heard in the deeply-rooted segregation of the South, just as the echoes

of segregation are heard in towns across America today. Our Summer Season not only VHUYHV DV D UHƎHFWLRQ RI WKH past, but it mirrors today’s world and provides a lens through which we can look into the future. While you can look for villains in these musicals, they are hard to pin down. Even the apparent villains are victims of circumstance, aren’t they? Ignorance, poverty, culture, and fear stand in the way of progress as they continue to do today across America. If I had to guess, I would say that Mark Twain would never have imagined just how relevant his story THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN would be in the year 2017. My fervent hope is that in my lifetime, these struggles will become antiquated; it will become a piece of history we will use to look back with gratitude on a time before things changed. , KRSH WKDW \RX ƏQG WUXWK KHUH WRGD\ s WKDW \RX ƏQG ODXJKWHU DQG WKDW \RX ƏQG KHDUWDFKH , PRVW certainly have found these things in building these shows with our team. I would like to thank my incredible cast for trusting me and one another, and bringing with them a goodness of heart that moves me, and my production team of artists and organizers who make these shows possible. I am forever grateful to my supportive and loving family, Laura, Finlay and our new unnamed baby boy, who, despite having a due date of June 16, might not be born yet! Most of all I’d like to thank our patrons who are among the most open-minded and loving people I’ve HYHU PHW 3OHDVH KHOS XV VSUHDG WKH ZRUG DQG ƏOO this house each performance. Th e F rie n ds of the The at re “The Friends of the Thingamajig Theater Company is a social organization in support of the not for profit professional theater in Pagosa Springs. It operates in support of the Theater management, to assist in fundraising, organize social events, and to act as an advocacy group to the community. In so doing, we will aid in the long term success and sustainability of quality professional theater in Pagosa Springs.” Do you love the fact that we have high quality professional theater in our community? The popular “Behind the Scenes” presentations give you insights in to how a theater works. On tech Tuesday, we provide food for the actors and crew on the frantic day when the whole production has to come together before the opening night. his spring, we lost a member of the Thingamajig family. Dale Schwicker was the most focused, hard-working, and vivacious person we knew – it’s no wonder the man was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army. You would think he either manufactured or was a magnet for long hours and tireless work. The amazing thing about his work ethic and dedication to the theatre is that directly or indirectly, they were all meant to KHOS SHRSOH +H ZDV VDFULƬFLDO DQG D YHU\ JRRG listener – he always listened however trivial the problem was. Dale always wanted to be strong for everyone and never showed vulnerability. While we can never adequately express our gratitude for Dale’s commitment, we can all strive to live and work to his standards. This summer season is dedicated to the memory of Dale Schwicker.
