Let’s work together to make 2016-2017 the best year ever! As we begin another school year, the staff would like to welcome all of our students and student athletes back to Pagosa Springs High School. We believe the 2016-2017 school year will be our best yet. To you the parents and fans, we thank you for supporting our kids! Last year, in collaboration with the Colorado High School Activities Association and the Denver Broncos, we started the “InSideOut Initiative.” According to the insideoutintitiative.org website, the “InSideOut Initiative seeks to transform the current win-at-all-costs sports culture, where the value is often defined by the win-loss record, to a culture that defines and promotes sports as a human growth experience.” We believe it is our responsibility to provide challenging opportunities for our student athletes : • To work with others - In a democratic society a person must develop self-discipline, respect for authority, and the spirit of hard work and sacrifice. The team and its objectives must be placed higher than personal desires. • To be successful - Our society is very competitive. We do not always win, but we succeed when we continually strive to do so. You can learn to accept defeat only by striving to win with earnest dedication. Develop a desire to excel. • To develop sportsmanship - To accept any defeat like a true sportsman, knowing we have done our best, we must learn to treat others as we would have others treat us. We need to develop desirable social traits, including emotional control, honesty, cooperation and dependability. • To improve - Continual improvement is an essential component of good citizenship. As an athlete, you must establish a goal and you must constantly try to achieve that goal. Try to improve in the skills and knowledge required and those personal traits that enhance the success of a team. • To enjoy athletics - It is necessary for athletes to enjoy participation, to acknowledge all of the personal rewards to be derived from athletics, and to give sufficiently of themselves in order to persevere and improve the program. • To develop desirable personal health habits - To be an active, contributing citizen, it is important to obtain a high degree of physical fitness through exercise and good health habits, and to develop the desire to maintain this level of physical fitness after formal competition has been completed. • To understand our purpose - Our purpose should be what motivates us. Goals and plans are essential in carrying out a purpose, but they are not the purpose itself. To be successful, we all must define our purpose. We invite you to join in our efforts to help all of our student athletes to benefit from the “InSideOut Initiative.” Let’s work together to make 2016-2017 the best year ever. GO PIRATES!!! Sincerely,

Sean O’Donnell Principal Pagosa Springs High School

Meet the coaches Coach Stretton will be starting his 9th year of coaching football as he begins the 2016 Football Season as the Head Coach for the Pagosa Springs Pirates. This is not anything new to Coach Stretton, as he was the Head Coach for the PSHS Pirates from 1997-2002. He started his coaching career in 1995 where he served as an Assistant Coach for Alamosa, Monte Vista and Pagosa Springs High Schools. Coach Stretton started his football career as a PSHS Pirate, playing from 1982-1986. He then had the good fortune to play for two different College Hall of Fame coaches. First he played for Fisher DeBerry at the Air Force Academy and then Earl Bruce at Colorado State University. Under the direction of Coach Stretton, the Pirates were undefeated in their league and won the league title in 1999, 2000 and 2001. He coached four of the coaches on his current staff (Jeremy Caler, Bryan Looper, Keith Candelaria and Pablo Martinez), and all of them were an integral part of those winning seasons.

Myron Stretton Head Coach

While not born in this area, Myron moved to Pagosa Springs with his family in 1975. After a few moves for college and then completing college, Myron moved his family back to Pagosa Springs where he taught Math at the High School and started his Head Coaching job. He and his wife, Lucille, have four wonderful children. Myron works as an engineer at Davis Engineering.

If your son wrestled or played football in Jr. High in Pagosa Springs, then you are familiar with Coach Candelaria. Keith has been coaching at the Jr. High level since 2005. Coach Candelaria started his coaching career in these two sports at Brentwood Middle School in Greeley. He is now moving up the ranks by leaving his Head Coach position at the Jr. High to join the High School Staff. Keith was born and raised in Pagosa and he was a PSHS Football Player from 1996-1999. His Junior and Senior years his Head Coach was Coach Stretton. He is very excited to be a part of the High School coaching staff and to be under the direction of his former coach. Keith has the opportunity to be a role model in our childrens’ lives each day as their PE teacher BOE DPBDI ,FJUI mOET UIBU IF JT NPTU QBTTJPOBUF BCPVU UIJT QBSU PG IJT MJGF )F FOKPZT XPSLJOH with young athletes and watching them develop over the years. Coach Looper comes to us with 6 years of coaching experience under Sean O’Donnell, where he coached the Offensive Line and Defensive Line. He was born and raised in Pagosa Springs and was a PSHS Football player for all 4 years of his High School career. After High School, Bryan attended Mesa State University where he received his BA in Exercise Science. While in college, Bryan played on the Rugby Team for 4 years. Upon his College Graduation he took on a job with Special Olympics, in Denver, as their Area Manager for 4 years. He is currently employed with Devo Capital Management as their VP-Financial Marketing.

Bryan remains active with Special Olympics Colorado as the local program director for the Pagosa Springs area, where he coordinates a wide range of sporting activities for the community. Randy Sorenson Quarterback and Defensive Back Coach

Coach Sorenson is joining the High School Football coaching staff once again after taking a 5 year break. He coached the Pirates with Sean O’Donnell for 7 years. He was also a Pirate Football player from 1974-1977. Coach Sorenson graduated from PSHS in 1978 and then attended Fort Lewis College where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. Many of you know Coach Sorenson as our Boy’s Basketball Coach. He has been coaching basketball in our High School, in some capacity, for the last 15 years. He has been leading our Boy’s team as their Head Coach for the past 6 years. Five of the last 6 years he has lead the boys to the Final16. Although Coach Caler is not a Pagosa Springs Native, he has spent his last 18 years in our community. Coming from a very large family with younger siblings and cousins, Jeremy was already familiar with many of the players on our team. Coach Caler was himself a PSHS Football player from 2000-2004. His senior year proved to be a very successful year for him. He was named InterMountain League Player of the Year and made the CHSAA All State Team. Upon completing high school, Jeremy went on to study at Fort Lewis College and played football for the Sky Hawks. Not only does Jeremy know what it takes to be a successful High School football player, he knows what hard work and dedication it takes to play at the collegiate level, which are valuable tools he brings to our coaching staff.

Jeremy Caler Wide Receiver and Defensive Back Coach

In 2008 Jeremy was part of the PSHS Football coaching staff. He is very enthusiastic to be working with our young athletes once again. Coach Caler stays busy running his own plumbing business and likes to make time for his family and friends. His interests include hunting, camping, hiking, playing basketball and anything that involves competition.

Coach Martinez brings a high level of enthusiasm and knowledge to the PSHS Football Coaching 4UBGG BT B mSTU UJNF DPBDI 1BCMP XBT CPSO BOE SBJTFE JO 1BHPTB 4QSJOHT BOE IF QMBZFE GPPUCBMM GPS PSHS from 1999-2002. Pablo Martinez Offensive Line and Defensive Line Coach

Coach Martinez is currently employed in the concrete industry and works for HH Concrete. Between work and coaching there is not a lot of free time, but when there is, Pablo enjoys horseback riding and hiking.

Coach Aragon joins the Coaching Staff at PSHS with High School Football coaching experience in New Mexico. He was also a YAFL coach in Pagosa Springs for 3 years. Coach Aragon is excited to be back coaching some of the athletes that he coached in their elementary years. Matt was a PSHS football player from 1978-1981. During his high school career he was coached by Hall of Fame Coach Jerry Bailey. Much of what Coach Bailey taught Matt helped him attain many All-Conference Awards, and in his Junior and Senior years he was named InterMountain League Defensive Player of the Year. His Senior Year he received Honorable Mention All-State Linebacker. After high school, Matt went on to play football at Fort Lewis College under coach Gary Barnett. He then went on to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix. Matt has given back to his community by serving on our local school board for 5 years, and the last 3 years he served as the President. Matt Aragon Running Back and Linebacker Coach
