“I had sandals on my feet and ran my entire mile in sandals. Being with my mom and seeing her love for running rubbed off on me, and I have been running ever since.”

Kay’s children participated in sports throughout school. Laurie ran track and cross country for Granbury, and Leah played basketball. Laurie continued running all through college.

“Leah was more like me,” said Kay. “She took some time off and developed her dedication a little later.”

Kay has never ran a marathon, but she has run numerous 10K races, dropping back to more 5K events after the year 2000.

She’s also mixed in a fair amount of tennis and softball over the years, but nothing replaces her peaceful walks/ jogs, especially with her family.

“That is the time that I like the most,” she said.

And whether it’s friends or family, she said working out together can make a big difference, particularly in consistency.

“When you have somebody waiting to meet you to run/walk, you have to go,” she said. “You can’t think that you’ll just stay in bed that morning or just go ahead and have dinner and not do your workout.”

PROPER ATTIRE Whomever you are running/walking with, or even if running/walking alone, Teresa said dressing right is critical.

She suggests wearing layers of clothes, especially in the winter. Warmer air stays between the layers, and they can be removed as a person warms up.

Do NOT wear cotton, she cautions.

Wear moisture-wicking materials that pull sweat away from your body so that it

can stay dryer and warmer. This includes your socks.

If it’s windy or raining you will want to wear a wind/rain jacket to keep the elements away from your skin.

“Cold is a relative term though, because people’s body temperatures are very different,” she said. “One person may be in a T-shirt while someone else is wearing a couple of layers. It’s a good idea to keep your head and hands warm with a cap and gloves.”

Around these parts, the same shoes can be worn pretty much all year. However, in snow, she suggests a trail shoe.

And, while there is no time of day that’s best to run/walk in the winter (in the summer, yes, avoid the middle of the day), if you are going to run at night, be sure to have on something reflective so that you can be seen.

Also, in areas without street lights, a head lamp or hand-held flashlight is highly recommended. Q

T

here’s a lot more to firewood than getting some logs and throwing them in the fireplace.

For instance, the type of wood you use makes a big difference.

Yes, there are types that burn better than others. Take oak, for example.

“It’s super hard, dense, burns clean and hot. It doesn’t leave a bunch of stuff (ashes) in your fireplace,” said James Heffner of Heffner Tree Service in Granbury.

But whatever type of wood you buy or gather, Heffner said make certain of one thing, that it’s dry.

“If it’s not dry, it’s not going to burn,” he said.

Heffner said the Texas woods include a variety of firewood types, including pecan, hackberry elm, bradford pear, and the ones most prevalent in our area include elm, cedar elm and oak.

Oak is the most popular, he said.

And while he does make his living cutting and selling firewood, Heffner suggests most folks call on guys like him instead of chopping their own. However there are exceptions, he said.

“The folks who cut their own are usually hard-core ranchers, but it’s extremely hard work,” he said. “But if you’ve got the right kind of equipment and a good truck, sure, you can do it yourself.

“It’s pretty easy to find the wood. The hard part is getting it home. A lot of people don’t even stack it.”

There is also a danger involved in cutting and gathering firewood, he said.

“The log spur shoots those logs out and you’ve really got to be careful, and a chain saw is one of the most dangerous machines there is,” he said.

Heffner also suggested keeping a clean chimney if you light a fire in it very often.

“If not, eventually you can have a chimney fire,” he said. “Oak actually burns that stuff out of the chimney.” Q

dult coloring books are taking the world by storm.

Aficionados say coloring relieves stress, it’s engrossing and just plain

fun.

“It’s just fun to sit down and color,” according to Klaire Duckworth, of Granbury.

“It can be entertaining.”

“It’s really taken off here,” said Bren Cleveland, events manager at Michael’s in Granbury. “It’s one of the most popular departments at our store,” she said of the coloring books for adults.

Cleveland said about 20-30 people come in every day looking for adult coloring books.

It’s a pretty big deal. Coloring books for adults are immensely popular. Bren Cleveland spends time organizing the coloring books at Michael’s in Granbury, where she is the events manager. Cleveland said about 20 to 30 people a day come in the store looking for coloring books for adults.

And it’s not just in Granbury.

Coloring books for adults occupy several spots in the top 10 best-selling books at Amazon.com. The new Harry Potter coloring book is one of the “most wished for” on the Amazon website.

Cleveland, 22, said she first heard of the adult coloring phenomenon from people who work at retirement centers.

“They are using it to help residents stay mentally sharp,” Cleveland explained.

The content in the coloring books can vary. Some are abstract pictures of gardens or animals. Many are strictly designs. Very intricate designs.

“Stress-relieving patterns,” several coloring book publishers proclaim.

“It’s been called yoga for the brain,” Cleveland noted.

With books like “Amazing Cities,” “Beauty in the Bible” and “Anatomy,” you can get an education while coloring. Cleveland said “Amazing Cities” is currently her favorite.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE Those fat, waxy crayons from childhood aren’t well-suited for the highly detailed adult coloring books.

“Some people use colored pencils, finetip markers or paint pens,” Cleveland stated. “Some of the ladies are shading in their pictures to make them seem real.”

Cleveland said it usually takes her two days to complete a page in her coloring book.

This month, Michael’s hosted the first coloring party at the Granbury store.

“We’re going to have them monthly,” Cleveland said. “It’s really going to be popular.” Q

ere we are again. January. The new year inspires new resolutions that usually involve changing habits. Popular resolutions include saving calories and money.

The colder days and nights had me thinking about soup, which led to me going through my recipe collection.

I came across some soup recipes that brought back memories.

Some of my favorite ones include the Lincoln Del’s Diet Vegetable Soup that my mom made frequently when I was growing up.

The Lincoln Del was located in Bloomington, Minn. My family lived about 90 miles south in Austin, Minn., and my mom would take us on shopping trips, and sometimes we would stop by the Lincoln Del. It was always a special treat.

The restaurant was an institution. It closed in 2000, but I still have the soup recipe to share with you.

LINCOLN DEL’S DIET VEGETABLE SOUP Makes eight 1-cup servings 1 cup = 54 calories 1 (46-ounce) can tomato juice 1/2 cup chopped green peppers 1 (8-ounce) can French-style green beans, undrained 1 (4-ounce) can mushrooms, undrained 1/2 (16-ounce) can bean sprouts 2 cups chopped celery 1/2 teaspoon salt Dash of pepper Note: original recipe calls for 1/2 teaspoon liquid artificial sweetener (not Equal), but it’s not necessary.

Combine all ingredients in a large pot and bring to a boil. Then simmer for 1/2 hour. Refrigerate overnight and reheat the next day.

MOM’S BEAN SOUP Here is another soup recipe from my mom.

She says, “This is a wonderful bean and ham soup. It’s low fat and mashed potatoes give it a delicious creaminess.”

Makes 8 servings 2 cups any type white beans, soaked over night or boiled and simmered 30 minutes 1 ham bone 3 quarts water 1/2 cup mashed potatoes 3 onions, chopped 3-4 stalks celery, including leaves, chopped fine 2-3 cloves garlic 1 can diced tomatoes Parsley (optional) Cook beans and ham bone two hours until beans are about 1/2 cooked.

Add mashed potatoes and stir until mixed.

Add chopped onions, celery, garlic and tomatoes.

Bring to boil and simmer 1 hour.

Remove ham bone, chop meat and return meat to soup.

ROASTED SQUASH SOUP My sister Lisa Kline is as good a cook as my mom.

Here’s one of her favorite fall and winter soups. Not only does it warm you up, but it’s healthy and delicious.

2-3 pounds pumpkin or butternut squash Olive oil 2-3 cloves garlic Salt and pepper 1 onion, chopped 1 quart chicken or vegetable stock 2 cinnamon sticks Fresh sage (optional) Cube the squash, drizzle with olive oil, salt and pepper, and roast until tender.

Sauté onion with garlic and add to stock pot with 1 quart stock (chicken or veg) and simmer with a couple of cinnamon sticks.

Remove cinnamon sticks, purée, and serve with sliced fresh sage.

TORTILLA SOUP Debbie Schiebe, who was the office manager for the Hood County News until she passed away in 2008, shared a recipe with me about 20 years ago. It was one of her “go-to” soups – Tortilla Soup.

This soup has no meat in it, and is quick and easy to make.

Makes 6-8 servings

TACO CHICKEN SOUP When whole chickens go on sale I usually buy several to throw in the freezer or boil and debone for future use.

I came up with a chicken soup recipe that has morphed over the years into a family favorite, freezes well and is economical.

1 can diced tomatoes 1-2 cans diced green chilies 1 onion, chopped Tortilla chips Shredded cheddar cheese Fresh cilantro, chopped (optional) Boil and debone chicken. Cut chicken into bit sized pieces and put in pot with the broth the chicken cooked in.

Add remaining ingredients except for chips and cheese.

Bring to boil and simmer about an hour.

Break chips into individual bowls and add a few tablespoons of cheese. Ladle in the hot soup, sprinkle with fresh cilantro. Q

A

re you a new pool owner who fears waking up one frosty winter morning to find a massive ice cube in your backyard?

Fortunately, that’s not likely to happen, according to Custom Designs Pool Co. owner Bruce Peel.

First, winter temperatures in these parts don’t reach extreme lows as they do up north. Plus, in-ground gunite type pools sold by Custom Designs come with a freeze guard mechanism.

The freeze guard has a sensor that detects when the temperature dips to a specific level. That’s when the pool pump will be automatically activated, keeping the water flowing and preventing a freeze.

“There are a lot of pool builders that do not put on freeze guards,” Peel said, noting that the freeze guards here are usually set to activate at 34 or 35 degrees. “The

freeze guard is a big thing.”

While many people shut down their pools in the winter, Peel does not recommend it.

“We recommend keeping pools running year-round,” he said. “You still need to keep a certain level of sanitation in it (with the recommended chemical treatments).”

Peel described a surprising phenomenon that can happen if a pool is drained and water gets underneath it, such as during a significant soaking rainfall event like Hood County had in May. “You don’t want to drain the water,” Peel warned. “If it gets enough moisture underneath it, it’ll pop right up out of the ground.”

Peel explained that plaster is used to line the interior of the Custom Designs gunite pools – enabling them to retain the water without seepage. The plaster needs to remain covered with water after installation.

“If you expose it to air, it dries up and

shrinks,” Peel said.

If there is an extended electrical power outage during freezing temperatures, you can drain the water from the pool equipment to avoid damage.

All of the Custom Designs pumps, filters and heaters are equipped with drain plugs.

Before dealing with that, be sure to turn off all circuit breakers to the pool equipment. That’s crucial because the freeze guard will activate when power is restored. The pump then could be damaged trying to run without water.

The chemical levels used in pools can be allowed to drop to lower levels in the winter because the bacteria won’t support itself in the colder temperatures, Peel noted.

A decision on whether to use a pool cover in the winter may be dictated by the nearby environment, such as trees hanging overhead. Q

| POOL MAINTENANCE Most modern in-ground swimming pools have freeze guard mechanisms. But if the power goes out, here are steps to drain the water from the equipment and avoid having damage caused by the pool water freezing.

Q Turn off all pool equipment circuit breakers. This must be done, because the freeze guard will come back on when the power is restored and can damage the pump trying to run with no water.

Q Open the filter air bleed valve.

Q Drain the pumps by removing the drain plugs from the bottom. Place the plugs in the pump basket and loosely replace the lid.

Q Remove winterizing plugs and/or drain valves on the heater and place them in the pump basket.

Q Remove the drain plug from the filter.

Q If the pool has a chlorinator, remove tubing and lid.

Q Adjust three-way valves to middle position to allow water to flow back into the pool.

Q Any pipes that can’t be drained should be protected with electrical heat strips available at hardware stores.

Q Cover electrical ignition heaters with a blanket for insulation.

F

rom Fords to Fiats, or Mazdas to Maseratis, being proactive with preventive maintenance is highly recommended.

If you take care of three maintenance key points, your vehicle will be less likely to cause you winter woes.

That’s according to Pete Chapman, service manager at Christian Brothers Automotive in Granbury.

Having the proper level of antifreeze, obviously, is one of the keys to avoiding trouble in the heart of winter.

“We test with a hydrometer, the quality and consistency of the coolant,” Chapman said, noting that the coolant will also lubricate the water pump. “Then you don’t have a bearing issue.”

A complete back flush of the cooling system can be done, if needed.

In the relatively mild winters in North Texas, extreme freezing coverage isn’t necessary.

“We keep it to about a minus 10,” Chapman said. “That will give it full protection.”

Chapman noted that some high-end vehicles are designed to use only special types of coolant. Using a different type could even void the warranty.

Next, Chapman said, you need to speak with your mechanic about the condition of your windshield wiper blades.

“Make sure you’ve got good wiper blades,” Chapman said.

One common mistake to avoid is when ice locks up your wipers, don’t “force the issue” by leaving the wiper motors in the “on” position. The electrical component can burn up and have to be replaced.

The third point is to check your tire tread depth, as well as the air pressure.

Most newer vehicles have tire air pressure sensors in place, and they will show an alert when needed.

Other modern features also contribute to not having to worry much about your car’s overall well-being.

In fact, Crawford said, many new cars are “smarter than smart.”

“Cars nowadays are real sturdy – and being computercontrolled, they won’t let things go wrong,” Chapman said.

“Some have a dozen or more computers.”

Christian Brothers offers a courtesy inspection of belts, hoses and brakes, franchise owner Mike Loter said.

It’s part of the plan of preventive maintenance to help your vehicle last as long as possible.

“A lot of (today’s) new cars will last 200,000 miles or more,” Loter said. “We have seen several with over 400,000 miles.”

“We do get a lot of high mileage cars, and people that wait for it to break,” Chapman said. “The key is to get the oil changed, and to have routine maintenance.

“Be proactive, not reactive. When you’re proactive, it seems to last a little longer.” Q 20 | Prime | January 2016

ew Year’s resolutions oftentimes vanish at the sight of a comfy couch or a slice of cheesecake.

But a state-of-the-art motivator will soon open its doors, multiplying opportunities to get and stay fit.

The grand opening of the Hood County Recreation Center – the new headquarters for the YMCA of Hood County – is tentatively set for March 31, according to 22 | Prime | January 2016

“I’m very excited,” Gossard said. “It’s an opportunity to do so much more for our very patient members. And we’ll be serving more youth. It’s just going to be an exciting time for our YMCA.” The “menu” of services will include personal trainers, weights, cardio, water aerobics, swim meets, summer camps, exercise classes, recreational swimming, after school programs and more.

“Our hope is to branch into some adult

sports, like volleyball and basketball.

Those are just part of our programmatic plans,” said Gossard. “We’ll be adding, in the health and wellness area, group cycling classes. It will be all new equipment.”

The county brought the Y to Hood County years ago, and the new recreation center will continue that committed partnership.

The rec center is voter approved and county owned, but the YMCA of Hood County will staff and maintain it.

Y members will be moving from the

clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current 2,400- square-foot location on Harbor Lakes Drive to the new 5,500square-foot building on James Road, across from Acton Middle School.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES Gossard said the Y currently has 82 part-time employees and five full-time employees (including herself). She is not sure how many more people will be hired, but more employees will definitely be needed.

The Y staffs both swimming pools at Pecan Plantation, and there will be two pools at the new rec center â&#x20AC;&#x201C; an outdoor recreation pool and an indoor competition pool. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As our membership grows, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll hire additional staff that will be on the cardio floor, and additional personal trainers,â&#x20AC;?

Gossard said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll need additional lifeguards who will work during the summer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;During the summer, our aquatics de-

partment alone will probably need 40 to 45 lifeguards for us to operate the four pools. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The hours are many, and we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like to keep them on the stand for longer than five or six hours for a shift.â&#x20AC;?

erhaps the only thing more depressing than breaking up with bacon cheeseburgers is breaking the bank on a gym membership.

For those on a tight budget (and who isn’t after the holidays?), there are ways to get fit without it costing you a dime.

Walking is an example.

Free opportunities to walk or jog are offered at several local schools, as well as the city’s Moments in Time Hike and Bike Trail. (The city also has an outdoor fitness station just off the Hike and Bike trail, behind the car wash on Highway 51.)

Tracks at Acton Middle School and Granbury High School are free for public use.

The track at Granbury Middle School is not open to the public, because it serves as GISD’s competition track, according to Public Information Officer Jeff Meador.

He added that several elementary campuses have small asphalt walking tracks, which the public is welcome to use.

When the weather is rainy, icy or exceptionally cold, there are indoor alternatives for walking.

Local megastores The Home Depot and Lowe’s welcome those who want to use their stores as an indoor walking track.

“We call it a race track,” Home Depot manager Chris Cox says of the aisles in the 112,000- square-foot store that are frequently traveled by those who come in to do their walking.

“They usually come early in the morning, or late in the evening. It’s not during the busy time of day when it’s more difficult to get around. It’s not a problem.”

Jim Birr, manager of Lowe’s, said he has no problem with people using his 116,000-square-foot store for their daily exercise.

“It’s a very big facility,” he said. “Sometimes they browse a little bit, too.”

But is walking really good exercise? Or is it the equivalent of getting a trophy just for showing up to play?

THE TORTOISE AND THE HARE For decades, it has been believed that running has more health benefits than walking.

Running, after all, is an aerobic activity that raises the heart rate. And it’s harder than walking.

But a new study released a few months ago concluded that, if the energy expended is the same, so, too, are the health benefits.

In other words, it takes less time to run a mile than to walk it, but the same number

of calories are burned.

The study found that walking lowers the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes just as much as running, but with less chance of injury.

Paul Williams of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California and Paul Thompson of Hartford Hospital in Connecticut studied more than 33,000 runners taking part in the National Runners’ Health Study and more than 15,000 walkers participating in the National Walkers’ Health Study.

Williams and Thompson found that those who exercised equally in terms of energy output got the same benefit in terms of lowering high blood pressure and unhealthy cholesterol levels, and fighting off diabetes.

On average, a person burns about 100 calories per mile when they walk.

According to Harvard Men’s Health Watch, a 2009 study found that the average American gains 2.2 pounds a year in middle age.

During the time the study was conducted, “people who walked gained significantly less weight than those who didn’t,” the publication reported. Q January 2016 | Prime | 25

She practically sounds like she wrote the original list herself.

Insulation and weatherstripping added?

Check.

Set water heater for 125 degrees? Check.

Set heat thermostat for 68 degrees?

Check.

“If that’s too cold, I get a wrap, or put on my long pajamas. I’m real conscious of trying to save money and resources,” Landham said. “I sit in the dark a lot of times. My neighbor comes in and turns on my lights for me. I just see those dollars burning up.”

At age 74, Landham said this is nothing new.

She moved to Hood County from Arlington about five years ago. Her first house, 26 | Prime | January 2016

--Faye Landham off Cleburne Highway on the Johnson County line, was about 4,000 square feet, and her heating bills sometimes were $400 to $500 a month.

The most recent electricity bill for the two-story rock townhouse she’s been living in since June was dramatically lower.

“My bill this month was $57, and I’m so excited,” Landham said, noting that her current home is all electric except for the water heater.

She called her power provider, United Coop, and invited them to do an energy audit.

“I do everything they tell me to because

I’m so conscious of saving money,” Landham said. “I’m amazed at how many people don’t even know they do that.”

She noted that United’s audits are free, and take two to three hours.

She doesn’t use her washer or dryer until she has a full load ready. She washes clothes in cold water, skipping the “warm” and “hot” settings.

Her showers are practically resourcesaving events – lasting only about 5 minutes.

“I try to use as little hot water as I can,” Landham said.

She even had solar screens put on her

bedroom windows.

Not surprisingly, she also eagerly participates in recycling.

“I’m a real believer that we need to take care of our earth,” Landham said.

Landham was a gas company meter reader in New Mexico in the late 1970s, when she was the first female meter reader this side of New York City.

The gas company transferred her to Dallas in 1980. She eventually moved into a career as a purchasing manager for various companies.

As a two-time cancer survivor, Landham

retired early from the Health Science Center in Fort Worth because of the disease.

At one time it had reached Stage 4, she said.

“It’s in remission now,” Landham said.

“It’s nine years out, and I’m doing so wonderful.”

But, as she said, she does stay “busy, busy, busy.”

She is this year’s Hood County Bean Queen and was president of the Opera Guild until recently.

“I want to wear out, not rust out,” she said. Q

2 Residents of the community known as The Colony came to Hood County with their white Southern owners as early as the 1850s. The emancipated slaves began to settle in this area approximately four miles west of Granbury. The Colony residents played important roles in the development of Hood County. They helped clear land for the courthouse site, executed their masonry skills on the buildings on the Granbury square and worked on area farms. The last three residents of The Colony left in the 1940s.

4 Located at 101 East Bridge St., the first unit of the First National Bank building was constructed in 1883. The private bank was opened by D.C. Cogdell and John H. Traylor. After the National Bank charter was issued in 1887, a second structural unit was acquired. The hand-hewn native limestone has long been touted as a good example of a Victorian commercial structure.

The land for Nubbin Ridge Cemetery was donated by Thomas Burns in 1878. The earliest recorded name for the community of Nubbin Ridge seven miles south of Granbury was Bald Knob. It was named after a small hill upon which nothing would grow on its uppermost part. The name was changed after the drought of 1886 and 1887 when it was so dry farmers had to go to Johnson County to buy corn for their stock. When some were able to produce a few nubbins of corn, Bald Ridge was known as Nubbin Ridge.

They were the location for revivals and other religious meetings. They were also used for weddings, reunions, homecomings and picnics. A location to hold outdoor gatherings was essential on hot summer days. Constructed in 1897, the Tolar tabernacle is located on Tolar Cemetery Road on the grounds of the J.D. Neely Community Center.
