S

everal years ago on his way home from Fort Worth, Ray Peters glanced out of his car window to a familiar sight.

More familiar than he originally thought, actually.

“I saw this C-119 at the Pate Museum, and then later I watched on the news, and I heard them say they sent some in from the San Antonio area,” he said.

“I looked up that tail number in my log book, and it was the same one I jumped out of.”

It was, indeed, the same plane from which Peters, who splits time living in Granbury and Denton, parachuted from as a young man in the late 1960s. Back then it was at Fort Benning near Columbus, Georgia.

He was a jump master, part of his 44 years of service in the National Guard and Army Reserves. He achieved the rank of colonel.

“I wanted to be a pilot, but the Lord didn’t want me to be a pilot,” Peters said.

“But I ate this up.”

Peters actually only jumped out of this particular plane a time or two. But seeing it brought back some wonderful memories.

At least it did then. But now...

“I stopped one day and they were disassembling it. I asked where it was going, and they said Granbury,” Peters said.

And that is where it sits today, in pieces on the grounds of the former Vietnam Veterans Museum on the north side of Granbury. Its engines are near the massive frame, open to the elements, as are gigantic tailfins more than two automobiles long.

The C-119 was nicknamed the “Flying Boxcar,” and appropriately. It does resemble something out of the old days that a hobo might jump on to get to the next town – only this one had wings.

And while it was considered a terrible plane, according to Peters, because of

its 2-1 slide ratio (greater possibility of a quick crash if the engines failed), it was a thing of beauty to Peters.

It still is, further proving the old adage about beauty being in the eyes of the beholder.

“I made my first jump out of that plane, and to see it deteriorating like it is just breaks my heart,” Peters said. “That’s my plane.

“I remember how scared I was, and then how proud I was. I’d done something a lot of other people have never done and never will do.”

Peters recently visited the plane for what might be a final time. It is not in good shape, and its future is uncertain as the museum has closed and no longer in Granbury.

He said he spoke with city officials who expressed appreciation for the plane and its service, but added there is no money in the budget to restore it. There is also the question of what to do with it, restored or in pieces.

“If they’d put it back together, that’s history,” Peters said.

In the meantime, Peters hopes that someone might come forward with some money for restoration, along with an idea of where to relocate the plane.

“It’s like some of your family getting old,” he said. “You know it won’t last forever, but it’s sad to see it becoming a pile of junk because no one will take care of it.” Q

The two Veterans Day Out events hosted in Hood County every year are popular events for veterans in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, some of whom are homeless. Members of VFW Post 7835 and American Legion

Post 491, along with other volunteers, provide a day of fun and fishing in May and September for those who have served our country.

any of them are in poor health.

Some recently had surgery. Others are homeless.

But they arrive in Hood County with a motorcycle escort, as if royalty was coming to town.

In Hood County, that is how veterans are treated.

Twice a year, veterans who live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area are invited to Hood County for a day of food and fun.

For years, VFW Post 7835, with help from American Legion Post 491 and others, have hosted Veterans Day Out events as a way to honor those who served our country.

They are treated to a day of fishing, games, gifts, a DJ, karaoke and food.

“For years, it was at Hunter Park. The last three or four years, it’s been at Squaw Creek,” said Jim Elliott, chair of the event.

He added that Squaw Creek is more “handicap accessible” and has “a real nice pier and boat dock area.”

“Luminant has been very supportive,” Elliott said. “They open up their facilities on a day that they normally don’t.”

for the events is between 100 and 150, Elliott said, and the volunteers are usually about that many.

Most of the games are table games, but there’s also horseshoes and baseball.

The events are held in the spring and fall – specifically May and September.

The spring event for this year is scheduled for May 18.

The spring Veterans Day Out features a fish fry. In the fall, there is a cookout with hamburgers and hot dogs.

The events are funded through donations, some of which come from local merchants as well as VFW and American Legion posts in surrounding areas.

Giving back Shawn Terry has served as a volunteer for the past several years and loves it so much that she agreed to be this year’s cochair.

“I love it. I’ve done it three or four times, and it’s the most rewarding day,” she said.

The vets arrive around 9 a.m. and load up to head back at around 2 p.m., she said.

The days are special, not just for the honored guests, but for the volunteers.

“There are several members at VFW who aren’t involved with much, but they’re involved with this,” said Terry, who came

from “a long line of veterans” and is a member of both the VFW and American Legion.

Her husband, Eddie, is a 20-year veteran who is now retired from the military.

Terry said that VA hospitals handle transporting the vets. Nurses and counselors come with them.

“We also provide goody bags to take with them,” said Terry. “They contain personal items, like socks and hygiene items.

Familiar faces Elliott said the volunteers are starting to see more women veterans at the events.

As soon as the veterans arrive back after a Veterans Day Out in Hood County, they immediately sign up for the next one, he said.

“There’s a good clamor,” Elliott stated. “I see the same faces. Apparently, they really look forward to this particular outing.

“They always come around and thank us profusely. We had one guy that was probably 90-something years old, but he wanted to be there and, apparently, he had just gotten out of surgery a few days before.”

Of her volunteer service, Terry said: “I just saw a need, and I want to be involved in something like this. We are free because of them.” Q

Family endeavors The Veteran Services program offers Homelessness Prevention & Stabilization Services to veterans and their families. These supportive services include outreach, case management, help in obtaining VA benefits, emergency financial assistance for rent and utilities, and assistance in obtaining and coordinating other public benefits. In The Zone Peer-to-Peer Support Group “Bring Everyone In the Zone” with this peerto- peer group led by veterans and established to provide support, resources and friendship to veterans suffering from post traumatic stress.

The group is completely comprised of veterans with shared experiences who understand the effects of stress associated with military wartime service.

This group meets the first and third Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Saddle Bags BBQ located at 3636 W. Highway 377 in Granbury.

Stay The Course The uniqueness of this program lies in the combination of therapies to help the veteran and their family members better understand themselves as individuals and how to interconnect with one another as a family unit.

T

he world that was once under Roger Hanks’ feet was suddenly rushing up past him.

The military training drill that seemed so routine was instantly lifechanging.

On Aug. 30, 2005, Hanks, training in California to be sent to Iraq, fell into a foxhole that had been grown over with grass.

He fell only 5 feet, but the weight of the 120 pounds he was carrying on his back came crashing down on his spine, legs and knees.

The incident lasted only a few seconds.

life.

“They (doctors) told me, ‘You’re really messed up,’” said Hanks. “I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I suddenly felt empty inside.”

But from the worst came the best.

Little did he know that what came after would change his life to things of which he’d never dreamed. The love of his life and more athletic success than he’d ever known were on the other side.

But it didn’t come without first dealing with the greatest challenge of his life – one that was perhaps even more emotional than physical.

“I was constantly training, something I loved to do. From parasailing to cliff climbing, I was an adrenaline junkie,” said

Hanks, 45, describing his activity before the accident.

“The Sky Coaster at Six Flags, me and my sister were the only ones in the family who would ride it – and we couldn’t get enough.”

Hank’s time in the service was over. He had spent time in the Army in 1989-90 and again in the Navy from 2001 until his injury.

A fighter from birth “That’s all I ever wanted to do, serve my country. My mom used to say I was born to be a soldier,” he said.

That’s because even though her doctor told her she’d never bring Roger to term in her pregnancy, she fought and did so.

“You might say I learned to overcome adversity at an early age,” he said.

That tenacity would serve him well in his battle to fight back – that, and his soulmate coming into his life.

“My wife was my rock. She called and wrote me constantly when I was in the hospital in California,” he said. “I was on a pretty dark path.

“But I never had thoughts of suicide. A soldier doesn’t do that. But I kept thinking, ‘What am I going to do now?’”

Roger and Kat got married in 2007 and moved back to Granbury. Soon after he filled the other void in his life, athletics.

One day at the Veterans Association in Dallas, he met Donna Gerron. She gave him some information that he’d been longing to hear.

“She saw the look on my face, that there was a part of me that was lost, and she asked me if I’d ever heard of the National Veterans Wheelchair Games,” said Hanks.

“Of course, I hadn’t, but I was immediately interested.

“It’s basically the wheelchair Olympics for disabled vets.”

Before long Hanks was training for his first Games in Omaha, Nebraska. He won three gold medals, one silver and a bronze.

Since then, he’s attended every year, traveling the country from Pittsburgh to Spokane. He’s won 21 gold medals, four silver and three bronze.

“When I first met Roger, he was down and out. You didn’t see any spark in his eyes,” said Gerron. “I think the Games were a turning point for him. He realized that just because he’s in a wheelchair doesn’t mean he has to be inactive.

“After going to the Games, he realized he has so many abilities. He just has to use them in a different way.”

This’s year’s Games are in Salt Lake City in June.

“I was rejuvenated. When we arrived in Omaha for that first time, there were folks lined up applauding us as we stepped off the plane,” said Hanks. “I was hooked.”

In eight years of competing at the National Veterans Wheelchair Games, Roger Hanks has won 21 gold medals, four silvers and three bronze.

He also became the kind of teammate, and even opponent, that every athlete likes.

“He’s a cheerleader for the other competitors, whether they are on his team or not,” said Gerron. “He just wants to see them succeed. Even though he wants to win, he wants them do well also.

“You can hear him all over the place encouraging and shouting for others when he’s not competing and they are.”

Hanks’ events in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games include archery, trap shooting, shot put, javelin, discus, air rifles, pistols, softball, bowling, and even 9-ball (billiards).

And this year he may introduce a new event.

“My coach is wanting me to try weight lifting,” he said.

During his time competing, Hanks has defeated four paralympians. He said he has been scouted for the national paralympics.

A little help from his friends

Archery is among the many sports at which Roger Hanks has excelled in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games.

Hanks’ perseverance has not gone unnoticed by his fellow citizens. The first trip to the Games was paid for completely by the VA, but since then he’s had to raise money to attend, and the community has come through to help.

“I can’t imagine any better place in the world to live where they back their vets

more than here,” he said.

However, he and Kat are leaving Granbury. They are moving to Vermont to be closer to her family. Nonetheless, he said he will never forget Granbury and hopes Granbury never forgets him.

Once in construction for a living, Hanks loves being outdoors. Wherever he and Kat land, it’s a good bet it will be spacious.

“I have to have at least 10 acres or I can’t breathe,” he said with a chuckle.

“I have to have room to enjoy nature.”

Hanks is determined to prove doctors wrong who say he will never walk again. He even stood momentarily while being interviewed for this article, though the pain was too intense to remain so for long.

“There will be a day when I can walk good enough to walk through Walmart with my wife,” he said. “I may need a cane, and it may hurt a little, but that is my goal.”

In the meantime, though he may be in a wheelchair, he said he’s a more complete person than he’s ever been.

“As long as I’ve got Kat, life is wonderful,” he said. “And the Wheelchair Games, well, they put the soldier mentality back into a soldier.” Q May 2016 | Prime | 9

Veterans continue serving their community and country Granbury has numerous organizations whose members serve the community and its veterans, according to veteran Jim Trimble of Granbury.

“Veteran groups contribute both financially and with volunteer hours in support of our community,” said Trimble, VFW Post 7835 chaplain. “It would not be a stretch to say that thousands of volunteer hours are donated each year through these organizations.”

Not only to help fellow veterans, local veteran organizations also donate financially to many causes in Hood County, including the following.

I

f not for a flat tire, Alan and Robin Greer may have never met.

Alan first saw Robin in 2003 at Possum Kingdom Lake. He and a co-worker were driving when they saw a vehicle with a flat.

Alan also spotted Robin with the car and demanded that his co-worker pull over so they could assist.

Robin also clearly recalls that day.

“I remember your partner fixed my flat while you flirted with me,” she said.

Alan later was searching an online dating site when, by coincidence, he recognized the woman who had the flat tire.

Robin’s profile said anyone inquiring had to be either “military or military minded.”

Alan met the requirements, and the rest is a military marriage made in heaven.

They’ve been married since 2004.

Alan served in the Coast Guard before he went to work for the Brazos River Authority.

“We work with veterans who are struggling with mental health issues,” she said of MVPN. Because of her military background, serving veterans was already her passion, she said.

“When I wasn’t working, that’s what I was doing as a volunteer,” Robin said. “I get more out of my job than any veteran I’ve ever helped. It’s a therapeutic program because you help yourself by helping others.”

Helping others is also a central theme for Alan.

“You may never know if you have helped someone,” said Greer, who is a certified diver and a swiftwater rescue technician.

“I do know at some point in time, I’ve made a difference in some people’s lives.”

Wakeup call Greer said a man he arrested on a DWI charge told him after he got out of jail that the law-enforcement wakeup call made him “see the light.”

“It’s to help people and to protect the community because without it, it would be a chaotic world,” said Greer, who was valedictorian of his graduating class at McCamey High School.

Robin said she has her moments of worry when her husband is on the job.

Field of Flags: Remembrance and Honor will open Friday, May 27, and a closing program is planned Monday, May 30.

This year’s program is called A Field of Flags: Honor and Remembrance and is presented by the Greater Granbury Military Officers Association of America, with partners American Legion Post 491, Marine Corps League, Blue Star Mothers and Granbury Brigade.

to honor veterans, active military and first responders.
