The announcer continued … then there was light, and then dry land came up from the water and continents were formed. It went on from the appearance of the first microorganisms all the way to the earth’s population by humans. The order was the same as in the Bible!

How could people thousands of years ago know the exact sequence of creation, other than to be given it by God? They believed by faith that it was true, even though it took millennia for astrophysicists to be able to prove it.

Today, when I gaze up at the stars, I am reminded of that day at the planetarium in New York. Scientists are only just beginning to learn about what we already know is revealed in God’s word. His handprints are all over creation, and the heavens declare the glory of God.

An Advanced Dilemma Happy fall, y’all! Cooler temperatures are on the way!

The other day I experienced a terrible ordeal. I left home for an appointment and was about 15 minutes away, when I realized I had left my phone at home. After the momentary panic, I had to make a decision. I could turn around and go back to get it, but 15 minutes home and back would make me 30 minutes late to where I was going--not really an option for “just a phone.”

That got me to thinking…”just” a phone? Not really. It is a phone, a camera, a texting device, a way to access my electronic files, my social media connection, the way my family reaches me, the way my clients can reach out, it holds my membership cards, my photo album (I am a grandmother now), and well, you get the idea. This is a mini-computer - this is my LIFE! When did that happen?

It happened gradually at first; then, as technology advanced, the changes came much more rapidly. I remember my first cell phone. It was the old “brick” phone with a foot long antenna that stuck out of my purse. All it would do was make phone calls, but that was enough, and it was awesome!

I was traveling all over the United States at that time, and it made me (and my mother) much more comfortable to have the ability to call someone if I were to break down on the side of the road. Before long, texting came along, to be followed by “everything else” soon enough.

Recently, Wes and I were in the car and talking about something we were curious about. Years ago, we would have just wondered and researched it when we had the opportunity. Now, I can grab my phone, google while he drives, and have the answer in minutes..thanks to my phone.

But, also thanks to my phone, I am rarely unreachable. Thanks to my phone, I have become accessible 24/7 with hardly any downtime or lack of screen time. Even if not working, I may be scrolling through social media to see what my friends are up to, or playing a game. I thought I was relaxing.

What that terrible ordeal the other day reminded me of is just how connected I am. And it gave me a few hours where I was “unreachable.”

Was I truly unreachable? Not really. My car has OnStar so if there had been a roadside emergency, the push of a button would have connected me with help. My family can look on their phones to see my location.

Anyone who called could leave a voicemail, and I could call back later - like the old days. When did we reach a point where we have to be instantly reachable?

Except for the multiple times I reached for my phone the first half hour, what I found during those few hours away from being constantly connected was a sense of peace….and a realization that leaving my phone at home really wasn’t so terrible after all. Try giving yourself a break. You might be amazed.

You could say Ibet Inyang Beneche is serious about comedy. The Huntsville native and former Postcards contributing writer graduated from Huntsville High School in 2011 and attended Syracuse University, followed by the University of Southern California. After the success of her web series Sigh, which she wrote and produced while in grad school at USC – Ibet landed a writing position on the popular CBS sitcom Bob Hearts Abishola. Her Nigerian roots, knack for comedy, and lifetime of writing made her the perfect candidate for the TV show. Ibet shared with Postcards how she discovered her love of writing, the journey that brought her to network television, and what’s next for her career.

What brought your family to Huntsville?

My parents were both born in Nigeria, and they moved here in 1980. I’m pretty sure my dad settled on Huntsville because of the criminal justice department and SHSU. My dad worked at TDCJ as a prison guard while he was studying at Sam Houston and got his PhD; then he became a counselor at the prison. He was there for years, and my mom still works at TDCJ as a medication aide.

When did you develop an interest in the arts and writing?

It’s something I’ve known I was good at and had an affinity for since I was younger. In high school, I started taking more creative writing classes, joined the newspaper, and eventually became an editor of the newspaper. I did UIL in high school and was in feature writing and headline writing. I was excelling in that and got into Syracuse University, which has a pretty good journalism program.

really understood it, but they were like, “Oh, she’s going to a really good school; maybe she’ll decide to be a lawyer at some point, but let’s let her do this thing for now.”

Was there a point in your life when you realized you were not only a good writer, but also funny?

I’ve actually always found it much easier to write things that are funny rather than dramatic. I feel like anytime I try to write something dramatic, it always ends up having like a fart joke or something in it. Growing up, I watched a lot of sitcoms, like The Jeffersons, The Cosby Show, and Good Times. They’re what made me fall in love with TV and want to get involved with it in the first place.

After getting a degree in journalism from Syracuse, you moved to California for more education. Tell us about that.

When I was a senior in Syracuse, I applied for USC and miraculously got in. I moved right after college to L.A. and did that program for two years. Near the end of the program, they put the pressure on you to have good samples, something to show that you are funny, that you’re a good writer. So, I took it into my own hands to create this web-series called Sigh that I felt was representative of who I was as a person and my sense of humor. I had always been a fan of Issa Rae, who had a web series called Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.

She really showed me it is possible to just make your own thing.

Sigh gained a lot of fans. Were you surprised?

I was hoping it would just help me get a job or be a good sample that was stronger than the scripts I had written. I was still pretty much starting out and learning how to write at that point, so the fact that people really connected to it and found it really funny was surprising; but it gave me a lot of confidence. It actually made it to Austin Film Festival, which is not an easy festival to get into.

It premiered there and got a lot of good response.

What was your next step after that?

It helped me get a manager and an agent and the opportunity to start pitching another project around town. It was something I had written in school that was based on my life. I started going to different networks trying to sell it. The next year or so of my life was just going into rooms and being told “no” until I was able to get a job as a showrunner’s assistant on a TV show called Berlin Station. I was still pitching this concept for a Nigerian TV show to CBS, probably a week after I’d seen an article that CBS had just bought Bob Hearts Abishola. I still went in, I pitched my show,

I did my best, and of course, they didn’t buy it. About a month later, I got an email from one of the TV executives at CBS, and they remembered I’d pitched a Nigerian show and thought I would be great for Bob Hearts Abishola. That led to a meeting with the showrunner, and it got me a job.

What do you enjoy most about what you’re doing with this project?

My dad was like, “I’m so glad that people can see what Nigerians are really like, and why we act the way we do, and why we are so successful in this country.” He’s very proud of it, and I’m glad he thinks it’s authentic. They’re also often critical in a way that Nigerians are, just offhandedly.

My mom is like, “That episode was good, but next time you should try to make it funny.” Like “Oh, on a comedy? We never thought of that.”

I love getting to talk about Nigerian culture. My parents really did not understand what I’d been doing for most of my life – they knew that I was going to some journalism school and writing – but now that they can see a show that’s about people like them, people who talk like them, and they get to see their culture on screen. They understand what I do now, and it’s really cool.

What is a typical day of work like for you?

Now it’s a little different, because we often work on Zoom. If it’s a day where we’re shooting, it might be us watching from our computers the feed of them shooting the show on the lot and remotely. If a scene needs a new joke, we’ll be texting our

boss a different line for a joke or something like that. It could be us watching a table read of a show - which is whenever they first get the script and read through it - and after that, we take the notes of what jokes worked and what jokes didn’t work, and we get on Zoom together and rewrite it. It’s kind of crazy how much we’re able to do from home.

What are future goals of yours?

I would love to continue to tell my own story. I’m grateful there’s a little piece of my story I get to incorporate into the show, but there are so many more stories I want to tell – you know, about being a Nigerian American, about being a black woman, about my time in college, about my time in L.A. I think every experience I have sparks a new story that I, as a writer, definitely want to explore and tell. I would love to have a long career where I’m continuing to tell diverse stories we really haven’t seen before. I feel like, as a part of Bob Hearts Abishola, I’m part of something revolutionary in TV, because we haven’t seen many depictions of Nigerians or immigrants. I’m so thankful to kind of be breaking ground with that.

The Joys of October Gardening Planting in October gives shrubs and trees nine months to develop a hardy root system before the heat returns. Another benefit of fall planting is the rains and a marked decrease in the mosquito and insect population.

Plants that benefit the most from a fall installation are your non-drought hardy shrubs (specifically): azaleas, camellias, dogwoods, fern, hydrangea, and other acid loving, woodland plants. These plants will require a prepared bed of 1/3 humus, 1/3 peat moss and 1/3 sandy loam, that is 2” above the existing soil level and with excellent drainage. Woody stemmed shrubs will not tolerate consistently wet, boggy soils or being planted “too deep.”

Tip: always plant shrubs with 1” of the root ball above grade to increase drainage and the negative effect of “settling.”

Azaleas will grow beautifully in full sun or light shade, but hydrangeas and camellias will require morning sun, with shade after 1:00 pm. A north or eastern exposure is the perfect place for camellias and hydrangea. October is also the time to have new landscapes installed for their best “show” in the holiday season.

October is also Pansy Season! When pansies hit the market, the daytime high will be in the

low - mid 80s and that is also the perfect time to plant cool weather veggie starters such as broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts and cabbage. Tip: Plant cool weather veggie SEED in August/ September, but starters in late September/ October, unless you can add shade to this section of your veggie garden. Chrysanthemums will rarely bloom past the second week in October, so do not get your heart set on bountiful garden mum displays for Halloween or early November……it is possible, but not likely.

The most frequently asked question in October is “when is our first freeze”? So why is the first freeze date important? It tells us, when to apply winterizer fertilizer to the lawn and shrubs (3-4 weeks before the first freeze date). It tells us when to have our harvest “in by.” It tells us when to begin bringing patio plants indoors or cover with freeze cloth and be prepared to spray with a good organic insecticide to keep from bringing any pests

indoors, find coasters, and replace watering trays. It also lets us know it is too late to prune, although planting shrubs and trees will extend through the winter months. The rule of thumb is you can plant until the ground is frozen.

October and late September is also a great time for planting sod. There seems to be a bit of confusion on how to plant sod.

• Always lay sod parallel to the slope to slow water runoff and stagger the sod, so the edges do not line up and cause erosion….much like laying tile.

• The area must be perfectly graded before installing or the “bumps” and lumps will be much worse.

under them…..this causes rot. If the sprinkler is a problem, dry them with a towel or cover them with freeze cloth or plastic to keep from getting saturated. We use wood blocks, old clay saucers turned upside down, or anything you can devise to make this work. Wiping the pumpkins with a paper towel with bleach on it also deters mold and early rot. When done, throw into the woods to feed the wildlife and you will probably have a few pumpkins come up in the same spot next year.

• Remove all vegetation, till, and grade so water will move away from the house.

• All varieties of St Augustine require 4 hours of sunlight a day to grow successfully and trees may need to be thinned every 3-5 years to ensure proper sunlight is permitted or the grass will die out.

• If you are “patching” an area, remember to excavate 4” to allow the new sod to be ‘flush” with the existing sod.

• New sod must be watered heavily 4-5 x a week until it is tall enough to mow.

Faith Farris While on break from a busy world champion season on the road, Faith Farris of Midway, Texas took time to talk about her life as a world champion cutter, her best buddy Phil, and a life that is centered around all things equine – and guitars.

With her dad Mitch Farris being a cutting horse trainer and her grandfather Jimmy, and older brother Kyle preceding her in the cutting ring, it was only destiny that she would also follow the family tradition. Little did they know it would lead her to not only

one, but multiple world championship titles – in several different organizations.

“I’ve always enjoyed cutting and went to pretty much every single show my dad went to when he was hauling, but I guess the Lord hadn’t blessed me with the passion for it just yet. I enjoyed it and wanted to ride, but I just didn’t want to show yet,” said Farris. “Then it was kind of an overnight deal; I all of the sudden was just, ‘Okay Dad, I want to go at it.’ It was like a lightbulb went off.”

As they say, the rest is history.

For the Texas High School Rodeo Association (THSRA), she was crowned the girls cutting state champion in June. Before winning the THSRA world champion title, she won at the regional level, taking top honors for THSRA Region 6. Faith didn’t stop there. She went on to also win the National High School Rodeo Association World Championship in July.

In August, her success in the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) was two-fold as she took the youth world championship and the youth high point award.

Even though her accolades are many, this 17-year-old remains humble and grounded deep in her faith.

You seem to have done really well with your sorrel horse Big Shoes to Phil. Tell us more about him.

He came from Bar RR Ranches. They bought him as a yearling from Waco Bend Ranch.

He is a full sibling to NCHA’s highest money earning horse Don’t Look Twice.

I don’t know what it is about that horse, but he is everything to me; he is my “prized possession.” I felt like we clicked even before I got on him for the first time.

In 2018, Dad showed me a video of him when we were at the NCHA Cutting Horse Futurity, and when we get home, there’s a new horse in the barn. My dad says it’s his new show horse, aka Phil. After watching him work on the flag the second day he was here, I knew I had to find a way to get him from my dad.

The next time my dad was working him on our mechanical cow, he said it looked like

my mouth was watering after watching him work. I was like ‘Oh, I really want this horse.’

So on Valentine’s Day 2019, Dad gave him to me, and I was named his sole guardian. All my winnings from 2019 on have been on Phil.

I just love my horse Phil so much. I feel like the Lord put him in my life for a reason, and I want him to know he’s appreciated. Yes, it had to be in the Lord’s plan for the world championship to happen, and I played a part too, but I really do give a ton of the credit to my horse for how hard he worked. He is my partner and the best teammate I could ask for.

My friends even make fun of me, because he’s all I talk about. I hope I can squeeze another 10 years or so out of him.

How would you describe Phil’s personality?

Oh my, it’s something!. He can be either the sweetest horse you’ve ever met or totally grumpy. There is no in-between, and you never know when it’s going to change. My dad calls him The Grinch.

“Yes, he really does,” said Faith’s mom Tracy Farris.

How long have you been competing in the cutting arena?

I’ve been cutting my whole life, because my dad’s a trainer, and I have been riding at home since I was about three-years-old and started showing when I was six or seven. I didn’t start taking it seriously until I was eleven.

In 2016, I made the top 15 in the NCHA for the first time. Then in 2017, I was crowned the NCHA reserve world champion for the junior youth and AQHA world champion for the all age show. Then I was riding Quite the Fat Cat. In 2018, I won both the NCHA junior world championship and AQHA all youth world championship on my grandpa Jimmy Farris’ mare Smooth Serena Ray. Thankfully, he let me borrow her. I was third in the NCHA world finals in the senior youth for 2019. That was my first year being in the senior division. In AQHA, I was reserve world champion all youth. In 2020, I didn’t have any luck in the AQHA, but was reserve world champion in the NCHA senior youth.

Faith has also done well in high school rodeo. She was crowned as the girls cutting champion in 2020 for Region 6 and reserve champion in 2019.

After being around the cutting show ring your entire life and watching your family for years, what was it like when you were the one in the ring?

I knew what I needed to do; I was aware of it.

It was just weird being the one in Dad’s place, because that’s when he decided he wouldn’t show as much and left it to me. Once I got hold of that feeling (cutting), I really wanted to continue. I loved the feeling you get from cutting, so cool.

Is there a way you could describe that feeling?

I don’t know (Faith says with a giggle and Texas size grin). It’s pretty indescribable.

I think I like it because there’s so many variables that go into it. It’s not going to be the same every single time, and that makes you want to better yourself. It’s also pretty fun!

Besides your admiration for Phil and other horses, what is it you enjoy about cutting?

It has shown me what is possible if you really love something and work at it. Cutting and horses have taught me to accept results, be joyous in times of trial, and to lean on the Lord.

Cutting is a very humbling sport, because it’s not the same every single time, and there’s no being perfectly consistent. There’s always something that is going to happen in-between somehow.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve had to overcome in cutting?

Probably my biggest thing has been my mindset, because I’m very sensitive. I can get to be very negative, and I have to change my mindset and tell myself ‘quit thinking that, quit thinking that, or you’re not gonna get it done.’

I’ve finally learned that I just have to stay positive and stay with it. No one wants to be miserable.

When you seriously started this journey at age 11, did you expect to have such great success in cutting?

No ma’am. Honestly, that first year we went every single weekend, and I ended up eighth.

There were many rough patches that year, but it was one of those things where I hadn’t felt what it was like to win anything big just yet, so I was just having fun really.

If you can dream it, we can build it

It sounds like the cutting competitions are a family affair?

Yes. I feel like they (my family) are my best friends – more so them than any other people.

My 14-year old cousin Riley Farris, who ended up NCHA junior youth reserve champion this past year, and my cousin Reygan Richardson shows with us. My uncle, Mike Farris, also competes. My Pops (grandpa) also hauled with us when he was more able to do so.

Has having your cousin Riley go on this journey with you helped you in the arena?

Yes ma’am, I think so. At first, we didn’t know if Riley was going to do it at all. We are very different. I am more reserved; horses are just my thing, and I’m not amazing at being social. Riley is extremely social and superduper smart. Then one day she said, ‘Yeah, I wanna do this with Faith.’ I was like, ‘Thank goodness.’ I love it because we are happy for one another and cheer each other on. We want one another to do better.

What’s the longest you’ve been on the road?

At one point, we lived in the trailer for 24 days. I didn’t complain at all. I honestly don’t like staying home, I don’t get homesick. I get road sick from not being on the road.

What is it you like about being on the road?

I take the best naps and sleep better in the truck than I do in my own bed. I think it’s part of it being ingrained in my brain from hauling with my dad since I was little.

being silly. Let’s just say the Farris brothers can be a lot of fun to be around. I also got reserve champion at that show in the finals.

What are some of the great lessons learned from the arena and horses that you can carry over into daily life?

It has shown me what I’m passionate about and, if you really love something, to work at it, so I would definitely say a good work ethic.

Also, I’ve actually grown closer to the Lord in my time with showing, because it’s not always going to go your way. You have to learn to accept that, and I’ve actually grown closer to Him in the down times. I always ground myself when I go back to the Lord instead of just getting mad.

What advice would you give someone who wanted to seriously compete in cutting?

I would say it’s mostly mindset. Yes, you have to work at it, but it’s not for the weak-minded. If it doesn’t go well, you just have to keep working towards it. It’s probably 70 percent mindset, not letting yourself get negative, and staying with it. Eventually the hard work will pay off.

So, when not cutting or in the practice pen what do you like to do for fun? I hear you’re multi-talented.

I like to play the guitar, sing and draw sketches of horses. The first song I learned was “Butterflies” by Kacey Musgraves. I am also a huge fan of Lauren Daigle. I play guitar when I’m on the road and like to play the soft, quiet songs. I also have an electric guitar that I’m learning to play.

I started modeling for South Texas Tack in July 2020. It’s a lot of fun. I’ve never done anything like it before, but I like it.

Now that you’re a senior, do you know what you want to do in the future? Does it involve horses?

the youth, I would love to start showing in the nonpro division and even try reining cow horse events.

I have this year and 2022 left to compete in the NCHA senior youth, so I would like to make the top 15 for my last years, and I love the experience of World Finals.

Whatever I end up doing for a job will be something I enjoy, to pay for what I love most – cutting. Sadly, cutting doesn’t pay the bills.

I have a four-year-old, Roses N’ Clover, I would love to start showing in some limited age cutting events. This is my last year of high school rodeo, and I will show in that again.

I’ll use Phil some, but also try a new 16-yearold mare we have named Holly’s Pepto Lena.

Once I graduate, I would like to maybe go to cosmetology school first, and I want to go to college and get a business degree. Hopefully, I can still show in college. Once I’m out of

With the ages being all over the board, it varies. I love to listen to them laugh and play. They all love to go fishing so just anything as long as I get to spend time with them.

What’s your fondest memory of your grandparents?

I loved to shell peas with Big Mama. With Grandma, she had long red hair that she wore braided and in a bun. When I was over there, she would take it down and let me brush and comb it.

I hope they know how much I love them and remember how much fun we have. I also hope they know how much joy they bring to my life! Booty loves them more than life itself and always wants them to love like Jesus.

Do you take our insurance?

We as a society are engrained from the medical world that you HAVE to have insurance to see the doctor. Is that also true for dentistry?

Does dental insurance work the same as medical insurance? Those answers might surprise you.

Medical and dental insurances work quite differently in how you are able to actually use them. Medical insurances have a deductible and once you pass that deductible the insurance company picks up the tab. Dental insurances also have a “deductible” BUT when you reach that deductible, you pay for EVERYTHING after that amount.

Which is a stark difference. Dental insurance deductibles haven’t changed much since the 1970s even though the price of dental work has gone up tremendously!

Let’s talk a little bit about the different types of dental insurances.

The main two that you will encounter are PPO and HMO (or DHMO) plans. HMO plans assign you a dentist and you may only receive services from that dentist. PPO plans allow you to see any dentist that you would like. Under the PPO umbrella, there are “‘in-network” and “out-of-network” dentists. Can you only see a dentist that your insurance is “in-network” with? NO! With a PPO plan, you are able to see any dentist. Does a dentist that is “out-of-network” cost more?

Bottom line is that you do NOT NEED to have insurance to see a dentist. Having an understanding about which type of dental insurance you have is helpful when choosing your dentist. If you would like to have a choice, make sure it’s a PPO plan. Is it better to see an “in-network” or an “out-ofnetwork” dentist? That’s a choice you get to make! Rather than having your deciding factor on if a dentist takes your insurance or not, I feel that decision should be made on how well the dentist listens, how comfortable they make you, the type of technology they have, and how personable they are!

My girlfriend was in the pediatrician’s office with her five-year-old son for a routine checkup. A nurse glanced at his chart and announced he was overdue for a particular shot. When the nurse left the room, the little boy threw himself back upon the examination table and stagewhispered, in a wavering voice, “Do you have any idea...(pause for drama)...what I’ve been through?”

I try to make it a point to take about 10 minutes at the end of each evening to help my daughter straighten up her room.

After a particularly rough day, I sat down on the floor of her room to help her sort through her dolls and I had muttered “I really don’t have the juice for this tonight...” My daughter left the room and returned a few minutes later with a cup of apple juice for me.

Overheard in a first grade classroom: “Well, when my Mom and Dad practice wrestling I get to eat a whole bowl of ice cream and watch whatever movie I want!!!”

My three-year-old niece is a great little girl, and she has a firm grip on the rules... So much so that she walks around repeating them from time to time. Usually it’s pretty mundane things like, “be careful around [her baby sister’s name]” or simply “don’t be mad.” The unprompted sharing of the rules is pretty cute, but it is really great when some of the more private rules come out while eating dinner or walking in the store, like “only daddy says dammit” or “don’t stick your fingers in your butt.”

Creative Corner 15 Life Lessons from My “Dying” Basil

While cleaning out my flower beds and deck plants, I happened on my wilted, brown basil plant and decided its season was over and it had to go. Without giving it a second thought, I removed it from its pot, cut off all its foliage, and tossed it over the edge of the deck, forgetting to remove the sprinkler drip line. Weeks passed and I never looked over the edge; that is, until yesterday.

What I found was a beautiful bounty of fresh herb, stretching her once-drooping, lifeless stems to grab the sun’s rays and take in the fresh air that its previous container stifled. Being an overthinker— and a believer that messages are given to those who are willing to listen– I decided there was a powerful metaphor in its renewal:

How To Help Your Child Get More Grit It’s all over the web, that “grit” thing. Every day, I get some promo for a webinar on how to get more grit, project more grit, or get in touch with your inner grit. So, allow me to enlighten the reader on how to help your child acquire grit.

Grit is equal parts determination, tenacity, and emotional resilience, which is the ability to withstand setback and even failure. Grit is nothing new. Grit is hanging in there and getting the job done when failure is a looming possibility. Grit is in short supply today, as I and many folks of my generation fear.

Grit doesn’t fit the postmodern narrative, which is all about how special one is. The current narrative is about getting in touch with one’s feelings and other human persons’ feelings as well. For most of the last fifty years, we’ve tried raising emotionally intelligent children, and it’s been a disaster.

As a consequence of our collective good intentions, child mental health is in the toilet. Time for some good old retro-childrearing, so here comes the fail-safe formula for endowing a child with grit: LET YOUR CHILD FAIL. Stop the enabling. Stop being your child’s personal reality buffer. Stop trying to solve every problem that comes up in his life and let him do the lifting for a change. Don’t even help him with his next science project. Let him experience what it’s like to live an authentic human life, one with its fair share of disappointment, loss, and failure.

The best lessons in an authentic life are often the consequence of falling short of the mark.

STOP AUTHENTICATING EVERY FEELING THAT BUBBLES UP INSIDE YOUR CHILD. Stop talking to him about his every feeling and let him know, in no uncertain terms, that dwelling on feelings interferes with solving problems, which is what life is all about--every day of it.

DON’T ALLOW YOUR CHILD TO RECEIVE PARTICIPATION AND “GOOD SPORT” TROPHIES. Let him know that, in the real world of everyday problems, which you are preparing him for, mere participation doesn’t get one an award. Awards are for merit, which is earned through setting yourself to a task and doing all you can to accomplish it.

INCORPORATE THE “THREE C’S OF COMPETENT CHILDREARING” INTO YOUR PARENTING PROGRAM. They are chores, courtesies, and compliance. Chores should come before after-school activities. Their benefits last a whole lot longer. Courtesies are the means by which a child learns respect for others, which is vastly superior to high SELF-esteem.

Lastly, the research finds what common sense affirms--obedient children are a lot happier than disobedient children. Calmly insist upon calm compliance with your rules and expectations.

LET YOUR CHILD KNOW HE’S A SMALL FISH IN A BIG POND. Too many children today think they are the Biggest Fishes Ever. Keep in mind, always, that the best way to demonstrate respect for your child is to expect of your child. Set the bar reasonably high and don’t help him get over it.

The evolution of The Big E-Z Crawfish and Oyster Bar is a story as old as time. Before owners Erik and Reba married, Erik owned a convenience store at the corner of I-45 and Highway 75, near the Sam Houston statue. It was a great location to draw people – not only those passing through from the freeway but it was convenient for their wonderful community.

Erik and Reba decided to start cooking on Saturdays next to the convenience store. They never imagined it would take off the way it did! They watched their idea, their dream, come to life before they could blink!

Erik started out cooking 15 sacks of crawfish and sold out quickly. As with anything good, word spreads. Their reputation started out strong, and they pride themselves on working hard every day to make sure to continue to earn your business.

“We started in mid-April of 2015, only on the weekends, and continued for three months. The next year, we added a tent and two picnic tables. We began cooking on Fridays, which led to a lunch crowd.” As time went by, the two erected a carport cover, added a drive-through, and were up to 16 picnic tables. Erik shared, “We outgrew that, and it began to hurt my feelings when people would have to wait 45 minutes and then leave because we were so busy.” Reba said the effort of setting up and tearing down each night just became too much to handle.

The couple sold the convenience store and purchased Zach’s Bar and Grill which is now their current location. Zach’s had been in business 30 years and was an established local eatery. Erik decided it would be a good idea to keep the cooks — Daren O’Bryant, Anthony Johnson, and Eddie Davison — so when people question what happened to Zach’s... it would still be there in spirit.

With customer growth, The Big E-Z menu also grew to include crawfish, shrimp, crab, etouffee, gumbo, fried catfish, fried and fresh oysters, crab legs, chicken fried steak, chicken wings, shrimp, and fish tacos. The menu includes a skinny burger for people who are gluten intolerant along with a fan favorite all-you-can-eat catfish. During the offseason, you’ll find a delicious steak special on Thursday and Friday nights. The Big E-Z offers dine in and drive through service and they also cater for all types of occasions. Cajun Fried Turkeys are popular during the Thanksgiving and Christmas months!

Live entertainment is another offering at The Big E-Z. Check out their Facebook page to see the entertainment lineup – singers, Cornhole tournaments...you just never know!

We are Melissa and Ashley Hull, and we are restauranteurs. The Lord decided to put us next to one another in 2010. We started working together for a common purpose and have become successful in a very challenging industry which is certainly is made easier by working with your best friend! Overcoming daily challenges as a family is the key to our business.

In 1995, I (Ashley) fell in love with the challenges of working in a scratch-made kitchen. Fresh food served correctly and quickly is the heart of our concept. Our steaks are cooked over mesquite and live oak. With us you can expect, “Hand cut steaks cooked on hand cut firewood.”

Fans love our Texas Kobe hamburger patties served on homemade hamburger buns, as well as our unbelievable pasta dishes. We have a well-trained kitchen staff highly skilled in preparing Texas sourced beef, seafood, and many other homemade items intentionally chosen for our menu. We just keep it simple and fresh. Melissa operates an equally matched quality bar with top notch Manhattans, old fashioneds, martinis and margaritas. Our margarita mix is simply sugar, limes, and lemons (freshly squeezed every day).

We are expanding to include Legends After Dark, which will serve high-end cocktails and ice-cold longnecks in a dancehall/icehouse setting. It’s a “Gastropub-meets-barn-dance” type atmosphere. We think it’s a perfect addition to our region for having a date night or just gathering with friends and family. You can expect to be taken care of by our hardworking staff in a place where southern hospitality meets delicious homemade food. It’s that simple.

The Best Box Ever Bakery, now a Huntsville mainstay, is a Mom and Daughter boutique bakery which opened in the summer of 2015. Best Box started in our home kitchen, but quickly outgrew our ovens as we outgrew our clothes! Mom Julie is a Baylor grad, finishing law school in 1988 and Daughter Annie is a TCU Horned Frog, class of 2015.

Decorated sugar cookies like the ones pictured are what put us on the map, but they are only a small part of all the yummy treats we offer daily. From a wide range of cupcakes, to lemon and pecan pie bars, rummies, cookie cake and classic cookies (think chocolate chip and peanut butter), everything at Best Box is made from scratch in small batches. Many of our treats are made from old family recipes. We also do fun seasonal treats like dipped strawberries for Valentine’s Day and Gingerbread during the Christmas season.

One of our favorite things about owning a bakery is that we have become part of the lives of our customers. We love celebrating with families (via sweet treats!) and it’s extra special when we get to participate in multiple occasions as families journey from engagement to wedding to baby shower then birthdays. People who move away from the Piney Woods often find McKenzie’s Barbeque and Burgers tops the list of things sorely missed! Whether your favorite menu item is a chopped beef sandwich, a baked potato with meat on the side, the succulent ribs, or a juicy burger, you can count on your order being both fresh and delicious.

Kevin and Lisa McKenzie came to Huntsville after they married so Kevin could attend SHSU. Kevin had worked for Bodacious Bar-B-Q in Longview and discovered he loved to cook. “An uncle built me a barbeque pit out of an old propane tank, and we cooked at home. We’d have a garage sale and end up selling more barbeque than junk!” McKenzie’s opened October 1992 in Huntsville with Kevin and Lisa being the only meat cutters. There was only one other employee, but over the years they have employed numerous students and citizens during the almost three decades of serving both the Huntsville and then the Madisonville community.

When asked what makes their food different, Lisa is quick to say, “Kevin cooks around the clock. Everything’s fresh.” Kevin adds, “We do things the hard way. Some barbeque places cook with gas and a little wood. We do all-wood fires. Our fires never go out.” Lisa notes, “We still boil and peel potatoes for potato salad and peel, then hand-cut our fries.” Named Best Barbeque by The Item’s Readers’ Choice Awards more than 25 times, both say their family is closer because of the restaurant. “I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” states Kevin. “If it hadn’t been ours, I’d have been away from my family. Our kids have been raised in this restaurant.”

When it comes to catering, one thing that might surprise folks is that McKenzie’s does more than barbeque and burgers. “We can do almost anything. Steaks, fajitas, and—with the holidays coming up—traditional Thanksgiving dinners with ham, turkey, cornbread dressing, pies, and our customer favorites—banana pudding and Oreo pudding,” said Lisa. According to Kevin, “When we opened this restaurant, my goal was to offer something different and be able to support my family. This community has been really good to us.” Lisa sums it up saying, “This community has blessed our lives.”

If you’ve driven north on I-45 towards Dallas, you’ve probably seen Shrimpy’s Seafood Restaurant’s big billboard sign along the interstate.

Along the Road Big Foot: Texas Ranger In 1836, 19-year-old William Alexander Anderson Wallace received news in Lexington, Virginia that one of his brothers had been killed in the Battle of Goliad in Texas. Pledging to “take pay of the Mexicans” for his brother’s death, Wallace headed for Texas. He didn’t arrive until the war was over, but found he liked the spirited independence of the new Republic of Texas and decided to stay.

Over six feet tall and weighing around 240 pounds, Wallace’s physique made him an intimidating man, and his unusually large feet won him the nickname “Big Foot.” In 1842, he finally had a chance to fight Mexicans to repulse an invasion by the Mexican General Adrian Woll. During another skirmish with Mexicans, Wallace was captured and endured two years of hard time in the notoriously brutal Perote Prison in Vera Cruz.

After returning to Texas, Wallace decided to abandon the formal Texan military force for the Texas Rangers.

Williams served under Ranger John Coffee Hays until the start of the Civil War. Opposed to secession but unwilling to fight against his own people, Williams spent most of the war defending Texas against Native American attacks along the frontier.

During his many years in the wilds of Texas, Wallace had hundreds of adventures. Once, Native Americans attacked Wallace while he was working as a stage driver on the hazardous San Antonio-El Paso route.

He escaped with his life, but the Natives stole his mules, leaving him stranded in the Texas desert and forced to walk to El Paso.

In his later years, Wallace decided he had enough of life as a fighter and adventurer. In exchange for his service, the state of Texas granted him land along the Medina River in Frio County in the southern part of the state.

Always happy to regale listeners with highly embellished tales of his frontier days, Wallace became a contemporary folk hero to the people of Texas. Wallace died in 1899 and is buried next to Stephen F. Austin in the Texas State Cemetery.

Bigfoot, Texas is located in the northeast corner of Frio County, 40 miles south of San Antonio.

The community was called “Connally’s Store” until the post office was established in 1883.

The present name is in honor of Texas Ranger William A. A. “Bigfoot” Wallace, former resident of the town.

Cook pork chops in the hot oil mixture until browned on both sides and pork is slightly pink in the center, 5 to 7 minutes per side. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read at least 145 degrees. Remove pan from the heat; transfer pork chops to a plate.

Step 3: Stir garlic into the pan and place over medium-high heat; cook and stir for 30 seconds. Pour in vinegar and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.

Add apple cider and Dijon mustard, bring mixture to a boil, and cook until sauce is reduced and thick, 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in rosemary and red pepper flakes; season with salt and black pepper to taste.

Step 4: Return pork chops to the pan to warm slightly, 1 to 2 minutes per side.

Directions Step 1: Combine tomatoes, onions, vinegar, tomato paste, green bell peppers, red bell peppers, banana peppers, sugar, garlic, pickling salt, and black pepper in a large stockpot; bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer for 30 minutes. Mix cilantro into salsa.

Step 2: Sterilize the jars and lids in boiling water for at least 5 minutes. Pack salsa into hot, sterilized jars, filling to within 1/4 inch of the top. Run a knife or thin spatula around the insides of the jars after they have been filled to remove any air bubbles. Wipe the rims of the jars with a moist paper towel to remove any food residue.

Top with lids and screw on rings.

Step 3: Place a rack in the bottom of a large stockpot and fill halfway with water. Bring to a boil and lower jars into the boiling water using a holder. Leave a 2-inch space between the jars. Pour in more boiling water if necessary to bring the water level to at least 1 inch above the tops of the jars. Bring the water to a rolling boil, cover the pot, and process for 35 minutes.

Step 4: Remove the jars from the stockpot and place onto a cloth-covered or wood surface, several inches apart, until cool. Once cool, press the top of each lid with a finger, ensuring that the seal is tight (lid does not move up or down at all). Store in a cool, dark area.

King Ranch Chicken Casserole Ingredients 1 Tbs vegetable oil 1 white onion, diced 1 red bell pepper, diced 1 green bell pepper, diced 1 (10.75 oz) can condensed cream of mushroom soup 1 (10.75 oz) can condensed cream of chicken soup 1 (10 oz) can diced tomatoes with green chile peppers 1 cup chicken broth 2 Tbs sour cream 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ancho chile powder ½ tsp dried oregano ¼ tsp chipotle chile powder 1 cooked chicken, torn into shreds or cut into chunks 8 oz shredded Cheddar cheese 10 corn tortillas, cut into quarters

Directions Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Step 2: Heat oil in a large skillet over high heat. Saute onion, red bell pepper, and green bell pepper in hot oil until warmed through, about 2 minutes.

Step 3: Combine onion-pepper mixture, cream of mushroom soup, cream of chicken soup, diced tomatoes, chicken broth, sour cream, cumin, ancho chile powder, oregano, and chipotle chile powder together in a large bowl and stir until sauce is well-combined.

Step 4: Spread a few tablespoons of the sauce in the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Spread 1/2 the chicken over the sauce. Spread about half the sauce over the chicken and top with 1/3 the cheese. Spread a layer of tortillas over the cheese. Spread remaining 1/2 the chicken over the tortillas, and top with almost all of the remaining sauce, reserving 1/2 cup sauce. Top with 1/3 the cheese, remaining tortillas, the reserved 1/2 cup sauce, and remaining 1/3 cheese.

Step 5: Bake casserole in the preheated oven until bubbling, about 40 minutes. Increase the oven temperature to broil.

Broil the casserole until top is golden, 2 to 3 minutes more.

Best Big, Fat, Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie Ingredients 2 cups all-purpose flour ½ tsp baking soda ½ tsp salt ¾ cup unsalted butter, melted 1 cup packed brown sugar ½ cup white sugar 1 Tbs vanilla extract 1 egg 1 egg yolk 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Directions Step 1: Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Grease cookie sheets or line with parchment paper.

Step 2: Sift together the flour, baking soda and salt; set aside.

Step 3: In a medium bowl, cream together the melted butter, brown sugar and white sugar until well blended. Beat in the vanilla, egg, and egg yolk until light and creamy. Mix in the sifted ingredients until just blended. Stir in the chocolate chips by hand using a wooden spoon. Drop cookie dough 1/4 cup at a time onto the prepared cookie sheets. Cookies should be about 3 inches apart.

Step 4: Bake for 15 to 17 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the edges are lightly toasted. Cool on baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

As Dallas explains, “The therapist will look at the entire person to provide a differential diagnosis, will treat the areas within their scope, and refer other areas appropriately.”

Differential diagnosis means that a PT can use appropriate testing to rule out possibilities and confirm a final diagnosis. For example, a patient may come in for shoulder pain, but the actual problem is originating in their neck with symptoms presenting in their shoulder.

Some people think physical therapy is only needed for post-surgical conditions; however, the top conditions treated at Physical Therapy Associates address back, neck, knee, and shoulder, as well as balance issues. With temperatures still soaring in our area, it’s hard to think about fall, but birds know it’s time for their fall migration. So, exactly how do they know? There are a number of factors. One way is the angle of the sun.

Days are growing shorter, and we have fewer hours of daylight. Summer crops are becoming scarce, and less food is available. In the fall, baby birds are now mature enough to be on their own, so Mom no longer has to tend to the youngsters. The location of the birds is important as well.

Arctic birds may begin migrating as early as July, while those closer to the equator start migrating in late September.

Although rare in the Greater Houston area, it is not unheard of to see a Broad-winged hawk (Buteo platypterus). These raptors have chunky bodies and a small reddish-brown head. Their tails are black and white striped, similar to a raccoon’s tail. The undersides of the wings are bordered in dark brown. These hawks live in forests and spend the majority of their time under the canopy of the trees. Here they look for small animals to hunt.

The female typically lays 2 or 3 eggs, and the incubation is almost exclusively taken care of by Mom. The male will bring food to her while she’s tending to the eggs. Mom takes care of the young for the first 1 to 2 weeks after hatching, and the male continues to deliver food for her and the young. Mom gets a break once the babies are a little older when Dad pitches in. At 5 to 6 weeks, the young are able to fly.

Almost all broad-winged hawks migrate in the fall to Central and South America. A great place to see these raptors as they make their way south is at Smith Point on Galveston Bay’s eastern shore. Smith Point features a land form that funnels the birds into a migration corridor. At peak migration periods, thousands of birds can be seen in one day. Broad-winged hawks make up approximately 70% of the birds traveling this route.

Beginning on August 15th and running through November 30th, the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory keeps a daily raptor count at Smith Point called the Smith Point Hawk Watch. A watch tower has been constructed for this purpose and is open to the public from 8am to 4pm. Staff and volunteers are at the watch tower to talk with visitors and answer questions. There are scopes and binoculars so visitors can get a better view of the birds. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the raptor counting and a celebration is planned for October 2nd from 10am to 1pm. Cool Cases Illustrating the Importance of Diagnostics (Part 2) This month, we continue our look at some cases that might not have been treated properly if additional diagnostics had not been performed.

One recent case that shows the importance of radiographs was a dental recommended by a fellow vet. Initial instinct was to postpone the dental, since visually the teeth did not look too bad. However, once the dog was anesthetized and had full mouth dental radiographs, 3 abscessed teeth were found that had to be surgically extracted.

The teeth looked perfectly normal, even under anesthesia. It wasn’t until radiographs were done that abscesses could be seen below the gumline. Left in place, this causes severe pain and infection and can lead to kidney or even heart conditions, not to mention headaches.

Plain survey radiographs can be useful for other body systems as well.

A puppy had been diagnosed with pneumonia at the emergency clinic 2 weeks prior and was treated with antibiotics. The puppy showed significant improvement, almost back to normal; however, an astute owner knew the importance of follow-up radiographs to monitor the condition. The recheck radiographs ended up showing a collapsed lung and an air-filled chest (pneumothorax). A CT scan later revealed the lung had adhered to the thoracic wall and required surgery. Luckily, the puppy was able to recover well, as it was caught in a timely manner versus during a crisis situation.

Ultrasonography is instrumental in further specifically evaluating conditions. An employee’s dog was presented for a routine wellness when a very subtle change in the heart rhythm was found, along with a minimal heart murmur. An echocardiogram (an ultrasound of the heart) was recommended for further evaluation. The dog was found to have significant heart changes and enlargement which required specific medications. After six months of targeted therapy, the follow up echo

showed significant improvement in the overall heart condition. On a side note, this case was a diet-related cardiomyopathy, meaning the heart condition was a result of the dog food the dog had been fed. Dog is doing amazing today!

A couple more interesting ultrasound cases. A dog presented after being hit by a car, needed to have surgery to repair a fractured leg. A week later, the pre-anesthetic exam revealed abnormal heart sounds.

An echo revealed the dog had a significantly compromised heart, so therefore was not a candidate for anesthesia. Sad case, but at least the owners didn’t lose the dog from anesthesia. The dog is doing well, and pain is being managed. Finally, a dog presented for just not doing right and not feeling well. A combination of diagnostics were used to determine the dog’s condition. Initially, bloodwork revealed elevation in a couple of liver enzymes and some mild kidney enzyme elevations.

An abdominal ultrasound was recommended that revealed the dog had a gallbladder stone that had caused a previous rupture within the gallbladder requiring surgery.

Some of these cases may seem a little extreme, but there are many situations where diagnostics can help pinpoint the exact cause of a condition that can be treated with specific targeted therapy versus just supportive treatments. If you are not sure why your veterinarian may recommend specifics tests or diagnostics, don’t hesitate to ask for an explanation of what is being looked for and why the test is important.

Inherited IRA Rules You Need to Know You’ve inherited an individual retirement account, or IRA. Now what?

Unfortunately, you cannot leave the money in the original IRA opened by the deceased person. There are several ways you can receive the funds after inheriting either a traditional or Roth IRA, but your options will be narrowed by a few factors. Failure to handle an inherited IRA properly can lead to a significant penalty from the IRS. The first step is finding out the titling of the account, whether it is a traditional IRA or a Roth IRA. In Traditional IRAs, the owner must take “required minimum distributions” or RMDs, when they turn 72. Moving forward, if the original account owner was older than 72 when they passed, make sure the required minimum distribution has been met for the year of death. Otherwise, there may be a hefty penalty from the IRS. If you are the spouse of the deceased individual, you may transfer the funds from the deceased’s IRA account into your own account through what’s called a spousal transfer. Spousal heirs have the option to transfer the assets even if the original owner’s person was over the age of 72 and taking RMDs from a traditional IRA. With your existing or new IRA, you can delay RMDs until you turn 72. You can also complete this type of transfer with a Roth; since these accounts don’t require RMDs, you won’t need to worry about withdrawals. This is a great option for beneficiaries who are younger than the deceased spouse who may still be working or do not need the income from the account yet. However, if you would like to withdraw the funds from the new IRA before you reach the age of 59 ½, you’ll be subject to the 10% early-withdrawal penalty.

For non-spousal heirs to both ROTH and Traditional IRAs, the money must be distributed in 10 years of the original owner’s passing, regardless of their age. You do not have to withdraw a certain amount annually, but not having a process may result in a higher-than-expected tax bill. The only exceptions to the 10-year rule are if the heir is a minor, disabled, or not more than 10 years younger than the original owner.

Jeanne Robertson With regret, we share that Postcards dear friend, humorist Jeanne Robertson, has passed.

by Jeanne in one of her most popular stories, “Don’t Send a Man to the Grocery Store,” which also related her tradition of making 7-Up Pound Cake to take over when a friend was ill or had suffered a death in the family (If you know, you know).

The beloved motivational speaker, humorist, and former Miss North Carolina unexpectedly passed away on August 21 at the age of 77.

Her team confirmed she had been struggling with a severe illness, not Covid-related, in the days leading up to her death. Robertson is survived by her son Beaver and grandchildren Ryder and Gray. Her husband, Jerry Ray “Left Brain” Robertson, died in June of this year.

Robertson’s words live on as part of her YouTube channel, as well as four books she authored, including her most recent Don’t Bungee Jump Naked and Other Important Stuff. Her team says, “We are sure Jeanne is now telling stories in heaven, all the angels are laughing, and Left Brain is in the back with a big smile.”

In tribute, we share a few of our favorite comments from our prior interview with Jeanne, as well as her famous (infamous) 7-Up Pound Cake recipe.

How did winning Miss North Carolina change your life?

The winner had to either drop out of school for a year or take a sabbatical from her job to travel the state of North Carolina for a year speaking two or three times a day. It took me about a week to figure out if I said something funny, and people laughed, that I loved it! I won on a Saturday night, and I was in Fayetteville on Tuesday for my first appearance. I told my Daddy I had to get up at this luncheon and make a speech. He said, “Well, you know you oughta say something funny.” I said, “Like what?” He said, “From here to the beach, you have to go through Fayetteville, and it’s a speed trap. And everybody gets a speeding ticket.

You ought to mention that. We’ve gotten three or four ourselves.” So I got up and talked about that, and they fell out. I said, ‘This is kinda fun!’

So, each town I’d go to, I’d try to say something a little funny, and then I began to develop a routine. The next year, after making more than 500 little speeches, not shows like I do now, I crowned the next Miss North Carolina, and the following week, I spoke at three conventions and the Rotary Club Ladies Night. I charged $50 to speak. One time, I charged $50 to go from North Carolina to Biloxi, Mississippi to speak, and that included my expenses! I had to learn a lot, but I just loved it and kept doing it. Never looked back. I went back to school and finished.

You’ve been speaking for years, but you’ve said the Internet changed everything for you.

When you are a professional speaker, you go to a convention or meeting, and you don’t have to sell tickets at all. We’ve always said to young speakers, ‘Don’t think people are coming to Las Vegas because your name is on the program; they’re coming because that’s their yearly convention.’ But in the same vein, you don’t have to sell tickets. A few years ago, in my 60s, I embraced the Internet. I’m on Sirius XM, iTunes, Facebook and I’m now approaching 41 million views on YouTube. You can’t do it all. I don’t Tweet. Some people came to me and said, “We think you can sell tickets.” I had only marketed to meeting planners, but because of the Internet visibility, they thought we could do it.

Your “Don’t send a man to the grocery store” video was the first thing I ever saw of yours. I was rolling!

When I taped that story, it was right under 8 minutes. When I tell it live, it’s about 14. There’s a saying among speakers that, “You get better, but any tape you do stays the same.”

What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you on stage?

(Laughing) I’ve had so many things in 54 years! I used to emcee pageants during my early years, and they were run by local volunteers, not professional theatre people; at one, I remember I had given them the cue to shut the curtain.

Nothing happened, so I told them again. Still nothing. I went and pulled the curtain. Pulled it straight down—everything fell off into a heap on the floor. I’m out there kicking it out of the way, and two or three people are trying to pull it off the stage!

But see, if you are a humorist, and that’s what I am, you go to the meeting prepared, and then you HOPE the banner falls off the wall! You hope for things to go wrong. A comedian’s main goal is to get the majority of people to laugh no matter what.

You might make a certain group feel very uncomfortable, but that’s the reason a comedian is there. The humorist is there to make the meeting planner, or person that brought them in, look good. Even since I’ve switched to doing theatre shows, I still want there to be a tiny point people take home while making them laugh.

I truly try to find the humor every day, and I think that we DO find what we’re looking for. If I can have my grandchildren, and anybody that’s heard me speak, approach life by saying, “Well, you know if this (funny) stuff is happening around her, it’s happening around us, too.” It’s a whole different approach to living.

1 I started looking for humor for speech material. Period. But then in the airport one day, I looked…and the flights were grounded, and the people in my gate area—their body language just told you how upset they were. I pulled out my pencil, sitting there ready, just to see if anyone would say something funny I could use. That was when I realized, ‘Everybody in here is angry but me.’ I was so busy looking for the humor in it that I didn’t get upset, because there wasn’t anything we could do about it.

If you’re telling stories everybody can identify with—we’re all gonna get arm flab, it’s coming—everyone can laugh about that, no matter who you are or what religion or race or background you have. You realize we really have a lot in common, and people have been dwelling on all the stuff we don’t have in common. But everybody wants their children to be happy. Everybody wants the best for each other, and most people really don’t want to hurt anybody. It’s like going to a ballgame. Color is very important to me. Not skin color. I want to look around me and see if they’ve got on Auburn. I don’t care who they are, what they are, what they believe in, or anything else. We’re gonna be high-fiving, because we have found something in common. You can teach your children how to approach life either way—by getting upset about everything or by saying “Isn’t this funny?”

Jeanne Robertson’s 7-Up Pound Cake Can be frozen until someone you know is sick… or has passed.

Ingredients

Directions

2 sticks margarine (room temperature)

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Cream margarine, shortening, and sugar. Add lemon and vanilla extracts. Add eggs one at a time. Alternate adding flour and 7-Up, beating after each addition. Finish with 7-Up. Spray 10” tube pan with cooking spray (or split the batter and use 2 8” tube pans). Cook for 1 hour or until it “tests done.” Remove from oven.

Let sit for 30 minutes before flipping over on plate.

½ cup shortening 3 cups sugar 5 eggs 1 ½ tsp lemon extract 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract 3 cups all-purpose flour (measure before sifting) 7 oz 7-Up (may use diet to reduce calories)

What is the Causation for Hesitation in Vaccination?

The worldwide Covid scourge has caused more death and despair than any pandemic for over a century…and is continuing with no end in sight. Such goes away only when a large enough percentage of the population are immune and cannot be infected to infect others. The immune proportion necessary is about two-thirds, and just over 50% of Americans have been fully vaccinated.

Covid is much more infectious than influenza and 20 times as deadly.

Hospitals presently are filled with those suffering. CDC currently estimates over 200,000 are requiring hospital care, and only 3% of those suffering are vaccinated.

Let’s examine the reasoning that triggers hesitation to get the protection the Covid vaccine delivers. There is a strong relationship between social media output and Covid vaccine hesitancy. The belief initially was that the vaccine was being rushed, because the FDA did not give full approval until August 23, 2021. The Emergency Use Authorization was approved on December 11, 2020, and widespread vaccinations were begun starting with vulnerable populations. This emergency approval was after several phases of testing were completed. First, healthy people were injected, with monitoring of side effects and certainty that sufficient protective antibodies were produced. Next, hundreds were selected based on age and ethnicity and vaccinated.

This brought up concern that it was unsafe. Upon Emergency Approval, Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock, M.D. said “The public can be very confident that this vaccine meets the high standards for safety, effectiveness, and manufacturing quality the FDA requires of an approved product.”

Those opposed to vaccination on a genetic bias frequently consider the erroneous conclusion that vaccines can cause autism and other genetic defects. This has been misinterpreted, because most vaccines in infants are given at 12 months of age, when the signs of autism first appear. It is just a false correlation.

Perhaps doubters have considered that this is the first vaccine to use the genetic system to make us immune. After all, our genes put together our bodies and will allow future generations to exist. The possibility modifications could occur is concerning.

There have been a few of those vaccinated that have had severe initial reactions, but in the studies, an equal number of participants were injected with harmless placebos… and an equal number had of these had reactions.

The vaccine places messenger RNA into the muscle cells where injected, and it instructs their RNA to make a viral protein which stimulates the bodies’ immune cells.

People who don’t understand our genetic system’s workings could easily conclude that they don’t want their genes altered, and thus hesitate to be injected.

Bias is an often present source of human error that is particularly concentrated in the Covid Vaccine refusal debacle. One can choose to disregard facts that disagree with their preferred conclusions.

The risk-benefit ratio is overwhelmingly in favor of getting vaccinated. The decision to be vaccinated is very important indeed, because it can potentially save your life or health, and that of your loved ones. Choose wisely.

Mustard Seed Moments

The Heavens Tell the Story “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” When I was a child, this was one of the first Bible verses I learned, around the same time I learned the song “Jesus Loves Me.” I never had any doubt that God created the universe and everything in it. Half a century has passed since I first read the creation story, and I don’t need to read it again to know it is true. I look around me – the intricate details in nature’s flora and fauna, and the vastness of the galaxies in the night sky – and I can understand why David, the psalmist, wrote that “The heavens declare the glory of God.” What has always confounded me is the argument that the Bible and science contradict each other. ‘Why?” I reasoned. The daughter of a geologist, I knew a lot about earth science. Yet, I knew it could be tricky to connect the dots between what is taught in school and what is spelled out in the Word of God. Then one day, everything changed. I visited the Museum of Natural History in New York City and went to a presentation at its planetarium.

As I watched and listened, I got goosebumps.

“In the beginning, the earth was formless and empty, and darkness was over the surface of the deep.” It was almost verbatim from Genesis.

The announcer continued … then there was light, and then dry land came up from the water and continents were formed. It went on from the appearance of the first microorganisms all the way to the earth’s population by humans. The order was the same as in the Bible!

How could people thousands of years ago know the exact sequence of creation, other than to be given it by God? They believed by faith that it was true, even though it took millennia for astrophysicists to be able to prove it.

Today, when I gaze up at the stars, I am reminded of that day at the planetarium in New York. Scientists are only just beginning to learn about what we already know is revealed in God’s word. His handprints are all over creation, and the heavens declare the glory of God. Psalm 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Genesis 1:16 God made two great lights – the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.

Psalm 147:4 He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.
