I would like to commend you on the excellent article about Gene Roberts in Postcards Magazine. I am a fan of Gene’s and was thrilled to see that he and the Josey Lodge were given community recognition. You did a great job of capturing his upbringing, experience, all of the community service he provides, as well as his sense of humility and his excellent sense of humor. Great job! Thank you so much for writing this article about Gene.
Patsy Collins I loved the candid photo and interview with Voyce Park. She made my day. Her goodness is heartwarming. Elizabeth Zolecki

Mayday, Mayday... Everything’s Grand! Last May, I was swinging between two emotional extremes...and it was all because of one little boy.
There were tears and frustration because the little man was due to arrive at any minute and, thanks to the pandemic--nothing I had dreamed of, or planned for, could be reality. My imagined hours spent with Wes and I hanging out in the waiting room with the other set of grandparents was not to be. Instead, we would meet our grandson via a video chat rather than by walking into the room and actually holding him. The arrival of our first grandchild was not going according to my “grand” plan.
The other extreme I felt was that of unbridled joy. Because, it turned out that, whether we were in the room with that baby or seeing him on video chat, Wes and I were just as smitten and ecstatic as we would have been had we been there with them. Of course, we missed the actual physical hugs with our children, but those came...just a few days later... as did the never-ending minutes spent staring at that precious new face.
As we prepare to celebrate our Walker’s first birthday this month, we are reminded there’s nothing like having children in your world to help you realize how fast a year can fly by. And what a year it’s been! We’ve watched our children experience those special firsts--smiles, words, steps. We’ve watched their joy and excitement as they’ve called (and yes, video chatted) with us to share. We are reminded of when THEY were the ones taking those steps, and we were the ones calling our parents. But now, we’ve been grandparents...for a whole year.

Gail Wright grew up in Manheim, a small Texas town close to Giddings, which is just a little over 97 miles southwest of Huntsville. Here her parents, Ethel and Marvin Wilson, owned a 380-acre family farm where they raised pigs, cattle, sheep, and also harvested various crops like corn and peanuts. “I remember putting what we harvested in the back of daddy’s truck and taking it into town to sell,” said Gail. Her father was a physical education teacher at Brenham State School, and her mother was a homemaker, and a seamstress. “My mother loved to sew, and she did this her whole life. She would make dresses for me and my sister out of feed sacks. She would also often sew for people in the community. Her trips into town always involved stopping at the fabric store to buy material. She had so much material.” Since there wasn’t a school in Manheim, Gail and her sister Brenda rode the school bus to and from Giddings, to attend school. Gail graduated from Giddings High School in 1977 and went on to Blinn Junior College in Brenham, where she received an Associate of Arts in Home Economics. Then she came to Huntsville to pursue her undergraduate degree at Sam Houston State University. In 1981, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Teaching in Home Economics Education. Fourteen years later, she obtained her master’s degree in Consumer Services, Fashion & Design.
When and how did you meet your husband Doug? Doug and I met in 1979, when he was a manager at Wendy’s OldFashioned Hamburgers on Sam Houston Avenue, right across the street from the University, which was perfect, since the Home Economics Buildings was right across the street. I was still going to school at the time, and I needed to work to pay for my school. My dad had a brain tumor and had been in coma for 3 ½ years before he passed away. Doug and I were married on June 5, 1981. After that, Doug went to work at Tri-County HMR as a job coach, and I was a program manager for a shelter workshop. We did that for 3 ½ years, and then we decided we both wanted to work in education, so we each applied to Sam Houston State University, and we were hired! He began working at the Financial Aid office, and I was hired as the Correspondence Course Coordinator for the Correspondence Course Division, independent study program. I worked with that program for 25 years, and Doug worked in Financial Aid for 23 years. During this time, we had our two daughters, Erika and Kaylynne. Life was great! We would come home, work in our gardens, and we were able to spend time with the girls…it was just great!
What is Partner’s Resource Center, and how did you get involved? Partner’s Resource Network, or PRN, is the state’s PTI (Parent Training and Information Center) for parents of children with disabilities; it works under the IDEA (Individuals Disability Education Act), a law tailored to provide assistance and resources to children with disabilities. While I was working at Sam Houston State University, my oldest daughter Erika developed a condition called Myasthenia Gravis, which is a neuromuscular autoimmune disorder that causes weakness in the skeletal muscles used for movement. Due to this illness, she had to undergo several surgeries, and had to have a spinal fusion in her back because she developed weakness in her back leading to Scoliosis. She became a wheelchair user, so I needed to learn all I could to make sure she received the assistance she needed while she was in school. Somewhere along this same time, my husband Doug, was diagnosed with end-stage kidney failure, which occurs with the gradual loss of kidney function until it reaches an advanced state in which the kidneys are no longer able to function on their own, allowing the body to work properly. It has been 20 years since his first kidney transplant, and he is now on a waiting list for a second, since after 20 years, the transplanted kidney no longer functions as it should. At the time, I was working full-time, and taking care of both my daughters and husband. Through my own experiences, and knowing others were going through similar situations, I found a connection through Partner’s Resource Network. I began as a volunteer, and soon took on a parttime position, and I have been with them since.
»
Through my work with PRN, I try to educate the parents about their child’s disability, provide information about their rights, and about their responsibilities. I was able to educate myself about laws and resources available to better assist and provide for my daughter’s needs while she was in school. I’ve been volunteering all these years, talking to parents over the phone, and now during COVID, providing emotional support through ZOOM platform, social media, email, as well as phone and text messaging.
Morgan Nauls
During my early years as a volunteer with the Partners Resource Network, I also co-founded HAND-IN-HAND, a parent support group for parents of children with special needs in Walker County. In 1997, as a result of my volunteer efforts with PRN and other groups, I was chosen as one of the Partners Resource Network (PATH Project) Volunteers of the Year for the state of Texas.
How is your daughter Erika today? Erika is doing great! She always had a lot of determination. When she was in 8th grade, she began wanting to participate in different things, and she asked to have her wheelchair removed. One of her interests was Karate, and despite our fears, she persevered and became a black belt. She went on to college, got her degree, and is now married. Last March, our first grandbaby Luka was born, and he’s been a joy!

Happy
In the middle of all you had going on, when did you decide to become a small business owner?
Mother’s Day!
I always wanted to use my skills in something I truly enjoyed. Like my mother, I loved to sew, and she’s probably the reason I wanted to major in Home Economics. In 2005, my husband bought me two embroidering machines. It just so happened that Macy’s out of New York was looking for people to contract out who could do embroidering for them on the spot. My lifelong dream was to be a home economics certified teacher, but I never got to do that. I wanted to work in something in my field, so when I saw the opportunity with Macy’s, I jumped on it, and that’s how “Designs by Gail Custom Embroidery” was started.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not at work?
own when we are away for other appointments.
Our grandson Luka arrived last March, and he’s been a joy! We really enjoy spending time with him. Doug and I also like to garden.
As far as our personal lives, wearing masks and sanitizing, is nothing new for us. Because of Doug’s transplant being immune suppressed, we’ve always worn masks and sanitized. On a positive note, I do think COVID has opened up new possibilities by introducing a whole new way of delivering services to the public.
“Gail grows things to look at, and I grow things to eat,” Doug adds. I like succulents. They multiply, and I like giving them to people to make them feel good. We also enjoy traveling, but haven’t had the opportunity since COVID. We like to go fishing, watch a good movie, and go to church. We are members of Family Faith church.
Has COVID affected or changed your lives in any way? It has not affected business at all. During quarantine, customers would email, text, or call us with their ideas, and have been respectful of our social distancing throughout COVID. Dear Gabby Welcome back to the Dear Gabby advice column. My, how times have changed! I got stopped by the police the other day for driving with my trunk open. They found a mask, rubber gloves, duct tape, plastic sheeting, and rope in my trunk. They simply closed it. Apparently, that’s normal nowadays! May is the month that holds Mother’s Day and Memorial Day. We can never repay them, but we can honor them. Drop me a line at Dear Gabby at PostcardsLive.com. I’ll laugh at your jokes when they’re not so good and sympathize with your problems when they’re not so bad. But I won’t mince words.
DEAR GABBY I wondered about my boyfriend because I wasn’t allowed to call or text him at night or on the weekends. He finally told me he was married, but he was going to leave her when their children were older. I know he is the man for me and that he wouldn’t lie to me, but should I let my life pass me by while I wait? LOVE IS PATIENT DEAR PATIENT
Help! Summer is almost here, and my pandemic body is not ready! There’s not enough time for a physical overhaul, so can you help me deal with it mentally?
If you really believe that worn out line, raise your hand. Now slap yourself with it. The only upside in this situation is that he doesn’t want anything kinky…like breakfast. Your boyfriend is a liar, a cheater, and a manipulator. I’m not calling him names; I’m simply describing him. If you don’t listen to anything or anyone else, remember this. God will never send you someone else’s husband.

The Garden Post By Kim Bius
Spring Update on the State of the Industry demand and inventory is restored in the coming 18-24 months, there is a higher probability pricing will decrease.
Happy spring! An update on the status of the nursery/landscape industry seems to be in order. The catastrophic freeze in February left landscapes in Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi, and upper Florida in a state of devastation. It just so happens 70% or more of all shrubs, plants, trees that do well in our area are grown in the same locations as the freeze…and the farmers/growers/farms lost from 20%-90% of their crop for resale for the spring season; thus, there are severe shortages and soaring prices on plants due to a 1000% increase in demand. Will this change? Yes, as growers can bring on additional crops ready for the market-they will; they are growing as fast as Mother Nature allows. Will the plant prices come down? Yes, when the supply far exceeds the
Plants such as plumbago, esperanza, philodendrum, plumeria, and other semi-tropicals/tropicals are in extremely high demand. If found, buy at that time. This season, unlike any other, inventory changes drastically from one minute to the next with everyone “fishing in the same hole.” Folks often ask, “Why don’t you just carry plants that will withstand single-digit temperatures?” That would be easy, but the plants that will withstand single-digit temperatures will not survive our Texas heat and the soil temperatures in summer. This is why plants such as peonies, lilacs, and rhododendrons will not grow in Texas for more than a few months. On the flip side, many plants that were assumed to be fatalities are returning. Keep in mind that we are 30 days behind the calendar date, and the soil temperature is still cool. I
would personally use mid-May as a litmus test for visible new growth before discarding. Plants such as azaleas and camellias, that were burned beyond recognition, are now returning. Many area plants that suffered severe foliage burn need to be trimmed back to 24”-36” in height. New growth will begin to appear within 3-6 weeks, and pruning will ensure the new growth begins at the soil level and not at the tip of the plant (resulting in spindly trunks and stems with no growth in the bottom third of the plant). This is the result of “poor pruning” techniques. In seasons past, many of us bypassed hardy plants with a fertilization schedule. This season, fertilizing everything is highly recommended. Plants received a “whammy” and need all the extra help they can get. There is a fertilizer for everyone and every plant known to man on the market. Some fertilizers are a general ratio, and others are for specific needs, such as hibiscus or palms. Visit your favorite independent garden center for accurate information on what to use, when,

y s y ” . y e r t r ,
It is a very busy spring season in the garden industry. Many folks are just beginning to get out and about, and the season of blooms has begun.
As many of you have noticed, this spring is extremely dry, and sprinkler systems need to be running three times a week at 15-20 minutes per station, depending on location. Irrigators are overwhelmed with service calls, so be patient and polite; these guys are doing their best to accommodate existing and new customers.
Enjoy, have fun, love and laugh…

A Special Conversation By Mike Yawn Photos by Gina Turner
John Rodak
John Rodak describes himself as an “instructor, illustrator and graphic designer.” Those who know him, however, might simply describe him as an “artist,” a word that reflects the creative approach he brings to all his occupational endeavors. His creativity is well captured in the latest Wynne Home art exhibit, “Pointillist Illustrations,” consisting of more than 30 of the artist’s works. The exhibit illuminates the influences of his upbringing, his travels, and his wife, Lan-Hsi Nancy Wen.
The Early Years How did you get interested in art? I was drawing from an early age. I didn’t do a lot of art in school, but I did participate in art classes outside of school. My grandparents were immigrants, and I was the first person in my family to go to college. I was able to go to Catholic school for K-12, and the focus of my parents and educators was to ensure I learned the basics—good literature, math, writing. My teachers and my parents also emphasized discipline, good behavior among the students. My parents stressed education
and encouraged us to do and be our best, but they never pushed us in any specific direction. But by my senior year I was able to take an art elective, and I also took a drawing class in Cleveland. So, I would go there once a week to do art. I haven’t spent much time thinking about how it influenced me, but perhaps more than anything it provided me with the discipline and focus to succeed.
How did college influence your art? I went to the University of Cincinnati, where I studied art education, so I was able to pursue art. Interestingly, my final semester in college,
30 Postcards Magazine: Piney Woods Edition | May 2021
I needed three more hours—completely unrestricted hours—just to be a full-time student. The department chair allowed me to create my own curriculum, and that was great. I tried art with dots—pointillism— and I still have two of my drawings from that time, believe it or not. But it was great to try something different, and it stuck.
Pointillism The “invention” of pointillism is generally credited to Georges Seurat, who is most famous for Sunday Afternoon on the Island
of La Grande Jatte. The work was originally derided, but through the work of Paul Signac, Maximilien Luce, Camille Pissarro, and others, the style came to be much admired and (literally) dots the walls of the world’s most famous art museums. Few of these artists, however, employ the black and white favored by Rodak.
Were you influenced by Georges Seurat or Paul Signac or any of the other notable pointillists? I was doing art at the age of five, but I wasn’t studying a lot of formal art history. I was drawn to the illustrated comic books, guys like Joe Kubert, Russ Heath, and Jim Steranko.
Some people distinguish between illustrators and artists. Is that a distinction you make? No, to me they are both groups of artists. It’s just a matter of how the artists choose to channel their energies and talents. Back then, illustrators used a tape that was known as ZipA-Tone, and it was a gradation of dots. Using it could be expensive, and I thought there might be cheaper ways to do it. For me, that way was to draw the dots—to incorporate a pointillist technique into the illustration.
canvas. You, on the other hand, use black and white, which produces the challenge of conveying almost endless tonalities of gray.
be in those days, and it’s him in action taking the snap. He gave it to his parents as a gift for helping him go to school and encouraging him in his athletic pursuits.
I prefer black and white. To me, it’s a particularly sincere way to approach art. Many forms of painting are forgiving. You can cover up a lot of mistakes with layers, and I don’t think that’s as true for pointillism. I was taught to take a perfectionist approach. If I made an error on an illustration, I threw it away and began again. This combination of black and white and pointillism was a good combination for me, and it’s what I prefer. It is a unique way of capturing the image that exists in my mind.
What other commercial work were you doing?
Working in Art Rodak began teaching in 1972, working in Cincinnati public schools until 1995, when he moved to Houston. He taught in Houston until 2012. Throughout this period and beyond, he also taught private classes, while also pursuing art commercially.
I would get freelance illustration work and other jobs. Around 1983 or 1984, I began doing commercial design. I had a talent for writing, and this put me ahead of some other artists or studios. I was able to get work because I could do the work and the writing.
The Wynne Home Exhibit: “Pointillist Illustrations” In March, the Wynne Home opened an exhibit featuring 35 of Rodak’s works, all in black and white, all pointillist, but reflecting a diversity of subjects and locations.
Tell us about your teaching. I taught for decades, really until COVID put a pause to that. But I taught for four decades in public schools, and I’ve taught private classes, and I taught everything. This is especially true in the private classes, where you might have 15-20 kids in the class, ranging from sixyear-olds to high-school age. They are doing different work, different styles, and they have different abilities. I focused on the individuals’ strengths, whether it be in ceramics, drawing, or painting. I tried to help them get to the next level.
You are also doing commercial work at this time?
. 0 .
Yes. I was also performing music in various venues, and sometimes I would do art for those venues.
This led to a big commission.
Most pointillists are known for their vivid, even artificial color schemes. The eye allows the multi-colored dots to bleed together, producing new colors never applied to the
It did. I would sell art to bars or other venues where I played my music, and it caught the eye of a notable Cincinnatian--Kenny Anderson, the All-Pro quarterback of the Cincinnati Bengals. He called me, and I didn’t believe it was him; I actually hung up on him twice, thinking it was a friend of mine playing a prank. The third time he called, he said, “John, this isn’t a prank. Please don’t hang up. I want you to do a commission for me.” And I did. It was as large as the piece could
There are diverse subjects in this exhibit, but a few of them come from work you did in the 1990s featuring Ohio scenes. Tell us about those. In 1990s Ohio, you had people turning against farming, turning against a tradition that was central to the state’s history. People didn’t want to be farmers, they didn’t want to live near farms—or, especially, farm animals. I thought, “perhaps we can help people be aware of farming and its history through art.” I spent a couple of years photographing Ohio barns, and then doing black and white drawings of them. I wasn’t completely

satisfied with the straight-lined drawings. It didn’t capture the eye. That’s when I began doing more pointillism. In fact, I did 18 pieces featuring barns, helping people become more aware of the barns as structures, and their role in farming.
Many of your pieces seem to rely on framing as a composition device. In “Mail Pouch (Southeast),” for example, the barn side serves as a frame within the painting frame. Is that a conscious device?
No. I work from what I like, and it’s not driven by a conscious process. Interestingly, when I did the barn exhibits across Ohio, the state was celebrating its 200th anniversary, and they hired a painter to paint the Celebration Logo on the side of one barn in each of the state’s 88 counties. In preparation, he went to one of the last surviving barn painters in Ohio, and he asked, “What is your advice for people painting on the side of a barn?” And the elder painter responded, “Don’t fall.” And that’s really good advice.
Who is the handsome guy embedded in this drawing, “House with No Name”? That’s me. I figured it was about time for me to do me on a building.

I ask Nancy which of John’s works is her favorite. She indicates that, among others, she enjoys the pieces featuring canals. “Sometimes, it’s the artwork and the memories it conveys to me personally. It evokes our travels to those places and the good times we had while there.”
I think so, yes. In some cases, it is a combination of the landscape and the structure—or, how the landscape is taking over the structure.
How long does it take you to do a piece? When I began doing pointillism seriously, it would take about 40 hours. Now, I do the pieces in about 20-30 hours.
There are 35 pieces in this exhibit, how did you choose them from the total collection of your work? With a lot of coffee and help from Nancy. She’s honest with me. I’ll lay out the pieces in my home, and I’ll say, “Okay, I am thinking about this one.” And she’ll agree. And then I’ll say, “And this one.” And she’ll give me a look or say, “I don’t think so.” So, I take it off. That’s an intelligent process on multiple levels. Yes, it makes for a better exhibit, and it’s good for peace in the family.

Nancy and Travel John and Nancy met, appropriately, at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. He approached her and said, “You have a pretty face. It would be a good subject for drawing.” Despite this questionable opening, she agreed to dinner with him. That was in 2002, and they have been happily married since 2009.
When do you travel? My son David is grown, and I am retired from public school teaching, so I have the flexibility in my schedule to travel—which means, we travel when Nancy has the time to travel. She works for IT at the Texas Children’s Hospital.
Do your artistic preferences dictate your travel locations? No. We go where we want, and we can always find places worthy of a good drawing. We’ve been to 40-45 states and about a dozen countries—several countries in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
Lagniappe: A Little Extra Has your style changed over time?
Somewhat. A former student of mine indicated as much, pointing out that my “dots are different now than before; they have a different texture.” I use different pens now, and these pens give me a little more flexibility with the dots. It’s made a slight difference in the look of my works.
With pointillism, you use pens with different tip sizes? Yes, the pen tips are measured in millimeters,
ranging between 3 and 8. I typically use between a 3 or 4, but I will sometimes use up to an 8.
Do you work photographs?
from
your
own
Yes. I use color photos, and I mentally imagine it as black and white. I think using a black and white photo would be a bit like cheating.
Many of John’s works at the Wynne Home can be purchased. The originals range from $1,500 to $5,000. He also offers signed limited editions, which can be purchased for $75. Open editions sell for $50. The Wynne Home Arts & Visitor Center is open Tue-Fri from 10am5pm and Saturdays from 10am-2pm. “Pointillist Illustrations” will be on display until June 3.

Vet Connect: By Kim VanWagner, D.V.M.
Differences between Costs of Veterinary Care The cost of veterinary care has been a frequent topic of discussion among many people for some time now. Why do some things seem so expensive? Why do clinics charge different prices for the same services? Why do prices continue to increase? Do animals really need all of this? Is there something else that can be done? These days, it is no surprise most services provided by modern well-equipped vets (from routine care to an unanticipated crisis) are costly. As for any small business, the basic operating cost of doing business (overhead) is high for vet practices and continues to rise. High quality vet practices have a relatively large inventory, specialized staffing, high rates of liability insurance, utility expenses, fuel and maintenance costs of mobile units, just to name a few. Veterinary medicine has reached new levels of sophistication in private practice with new levels of costs. While all these advances mean more high-quality options for animal care, they also account for greatly increased costs. Similar services and products can vary in cost between vet clinics for different reasons. For example, a specific vaccination may cost more at one clinic versus another depending on which manufacturer the vaccine is purchased from. Different companies can manufacture the same vaccine, but use different technology in creating that vaccine. A more costly vaccine may be a recombitect-type technology created to help minimize the side effects and tumors that can be a result of vaccination (for example in cats). Another example would be routine dental cleanings. One clinic may include full mouth radiographs in the “dental cleaning price” to be performed prior to the cleaning to evaluate for any underlying issues or problems that may be hidden and not seen without radiographs, whereas another clinic may not have the
capability to provide that service. Similarly, other surgery prices may differ pending what services/products are included in the overall price. For example, are IV catheterization, pre-anesth labwork, post op pain meds, and monitoring with advanced technology equipment included? Some clinics are considered “wellness” clinics and provide only routine services and procedures and can charge less for the overall visit since they usually don’t have as large overhead expenses such as specialized staff or as large of variety of inventory as other full-service hospitals. A responsible vet is constantly trying to maintain a delicate balance by anticipating clients’ needs, keeping certain drugs available for immediate use, yet trying to keep the overhead cost of unused inventory at a manageable level. Products purchased directly from your vet are typically more expensive than those purchased through other sources due to cost of inventory, labor, administrative costs, and quality control being much higher for smaller clinics versus large supply companies. Some clinics may be able to sell products at a lower cost versus others if they get discounts for ordering larger quantities. In conclusion, pet ownership is expensive, and proper veterinary care accounts for a significant percentage of that expense. Ultimately, the relationship you have with your vet will guide you and your pet down a balanced path. Use them as a sounding board to help you determine the level of care you are comfortable with, and discuss the costs of services frankly and openly.

Wildlife Wonders GIVE TURTLES A BRAKE!
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center
I brake for turtles. Do you? With the warmer weather, turtles are going to be on the move soon. They are most likely looking for a mate, or the females are looking for a nesting site. It could be they’re just looking for a good meal. Whatever the reason, cars and turtles don’t mix. If you’re like me and want to help turtles crossing roads, here are a few helpful hints: •Safety first. Always be aware of other vehicles. Pull off the road and turn on your hazard flashers. •If there’s no traffic, it’s best to let the turtle cross on its own. •Don’t put the turtle in your car and relocate it. Eastern box turtles, for example, only travel within about a 2-mile radius throughout their lives. They have a homing instinct and move about within their home territory. Removing them from their home will cause undo stress and shorten their lives. •Always move the turtle in the same direction it was going, as far off the road as you can place it. •Be gentle. Grasp the turtle’s shell edge at about the mid-point of the body. If it’s a snapping turtle, grasp the shell at the back of the body to protect yourself from a bite. In either case, you can then lift the turtle and place it on the side of the road. You can also place the turtle on a floor mat or piece of clothing and slide it. •Once the turtle is safely placed on the side of the road out of danger, sanitize your hands. We’ve all gotten pretty good at that! What should you do if you find an injured turtle? Believe it or not, turtles with damaged shells can recover, but it’s important to get help as quickly as possible. Call a local wildlife center first to make sure they will accept the animal, and follow their instructions. Don’t try to feed the turtle or give it water. Blast From the Past Running Shoes or Torturing Device?
Neither, this outrageous pair of spiked shoes may be the most striking gardening tools we’ve ever seen. They were made to aerate a lawn: by walking around in them, air and water flow to the grass roots is improved. These were made of 1 1/4” thick planks with 6” nails driven through. The heels are metal, and the straps are leather. Each shoe measures 12” long by 4 3/4” wide by 9” high. This pair was in excellent condition with some wear to the leather straps. Developed in 1820 Pick up your pair of spiked shoes for your next day in the garden or morning run around the block.

Along the Road Majestic Theatre Marker Text:
Located in the heart of downtown San Antonio, the 2,264 seat Majestic Theatre is a National Historic Landmark and is currently home to the Broadway in San Antonio series, along with a wide variety of concerts and performing arts attractions.
Constructed in 1928 at a cost of $3,000,000, this structure was designed by John Eberson for Karl Hoblitzelle, owner of the Interstate Theatre chain. Chiefly Spanish Colonial Revival in design, its eclectic features include paired columns supporting a full-width canopy; an elaborate marquee; and ornate palace courtyard interior. The Majestic is an outstanding example of the few remaining atmospheric theatres designed by Eberson in the 1920s.

What is your grandparent name and does it have a special meaning? GG - started as Granny Gwen. When my kids got married, they had dogs so I kidded about having granddogs and my daughter-in-law said you’re a GG. When Tyler was born, he just picked it up!
2
Number of grandchildren and age range? Just one. He’s 18.
3
Favorite activity with him? Anything and everything. We have watched movies together since he was little bitty. Even now, when we arrive at his house, he has a special movie picked out and we pop popcorn and enjoy!
4
Advice to other/new grandparents? Cherish every moment because they grow up so fast.
5
What’s your fondest memory of your grandparents? My grandmother loved to bake and she knew how my sister and I liked to play with the dough. She always had a plate of dough for us to pretend baking with when we arrived at her house.

From the Mouths of Babes...
HOORAY! YOU MADE IT!
During a lesson about adjectives, my friend, an elementary school teacher, asked her class to describe their mothers. One boy described his mother’s hair as auburn. Impressed by his sophisticated word choice, my friend asked, “How do you know her hair color is auburn?” Her student replied, “Because that’s what it says on the box.”
My three-year-old daughter stuck out her hand and said, “Look at the fly I killed, Mommy.” Since she was eating a juicy pickle at the time, I thrust her contaminated hands under the faucet and washed them with antibacterial soap. After sitting her down to finish her pickle, I asked, with a touch of awe, “How did you kill that fly all by yourself?” Between bites, she said, “I hit it with my pickle.” Cindy Yates
At the mall, my five-year-old grandson joined the other children in line waiting to sit on the Easter Bunny’s lap. When it was his turn, Jake didn’t move; he just stared. “Don’t you want to sit on the bunny’s lap?” I asked. “No!” he shouted. “There’s a man in his mouth!” C. Smith

Trippin’ Story by Gina Turner Photos by Gina Turner
So, a funny thing happened on the road to fun… Early one February afternoon, my BFF Wendy and I met for lunch, as we do quite often. After the normal catching up about the family and kids, we started thinking how badly we needed to escape; so, a fun road trip plan was hatched. After a rough 2020 and no travel for anyone, we wanted not just any trip, but one we could drive to--no flights, no rental cars, just two girls and the open road. Sounds like trouble, doesn’t it? Thelma and Louise? No, more like Ozzy and Sharon. We decided we were willing to risk it, so after a little research on a much-needed getaway, our plans came to fruition. A ski trip was born, with Taos, New Mexico as the winning destination. We were very excited about the outing. Our reservations were made, and hubbies were informed (yes, in that order.) We knew they wouldn’t say no. It is a perfect distance from home--only 13-½ hours by car. So, we loaded up and set off on our adventure. The road had no idea what was in store for it.
(Using Ozzy voice) Wennnnnnnnnnnddddddyyyyyyy, All aboard, hahahahahahahahaha.

Micromanagers Are Their Own Worst Enemies To most folks, micromanagement has to do with tasks or performance. The micromanaging parent, for example, is generally thought of as one who hovers over a child’s homework or academics in general. Indeed, that is the most common form, but parental micromanagement can also extend to organizing and directing a child’s social life and recreation. Whatever the context, micromanagement is driven by anxiety. The micromanaging parent is anxious the child might do something that reflects badly on the parent, which means parental micromanagement is a variation on the theme of codependency. It is almost always the case that the attempt to micromanage a child engenders relationship problems of one sort or another, including rebellion. The least obvious form of parental micromanagement involves the attempt to perfect a child’s behavior. The parent in question is affected by a type of obsessive-compulsive disorder, symptoms of which include overattending to misbehavior, persistent nagging, frequent lecturing, and the over-use of punitive consequences. There is no doubt concerning the parent’s love for his or her child, but it is demonstrated in the most paradoxical of ways. How, pray tell, is a child to understand that someone who is often angry at him genuinely loves him? It goes without saying, parents who micromanage misbehavior are overly vigilant. They can’t bring themselves to let even the smallest infraction – the child makes a sour face at some instruction, for example – go by the boards. Every little thing is a big deal, worthy of agitation, a lecture, and even punishment. Their kids eventually become immune to lecturing and being punished, which is a rather understandable defense mechanism. Unfortunately, the parent interprets the child’s immunity as evidence of disrespect and the need for more “discipline.” And around and around they go.
56 Postcards Magazine: Piney Woods Edition | May 2021
Micromanagers are their own worst enemies. By being on the constant lookout for a problem, they activate a self-fulfilling prophecy, and problems are what they get. So, for example, the parent who is constantly on the lookout for disrespect gets precisely what she’s looking for. The smallest nuance of body language becomes confirmation her child doesn’t respect her and needs more correction. Eventually, a child who was just being a child – kids wear their emotions on their sleeves – becomes truly disrespectful. By what magic does a person come to respect a person who is constantly on their back about something or other? A functional relationship between a superior and a subordinate requires more of the former than the latter. For one thing, it requires that the superior overlook what is nothing but “background noise” – quirks of personality, for instance. Not sweating every little peccadillo is an important part of what being authentically superior is all about. I hate to bust a bubble or two out there in Reader Land, but parents do not deserve respect. If you want your child to “invest” in your authority, you must act like you know what you are doing. Micromanagers think they know what they’re doing, but thinking is as far as it goes--because what they’re doing is counterproductive, always. And their children know that. INTERNATIONAL

Business Focus Story by Claudia Kirkwood Photos by Libby Rogers
Climatec Secure Storage, locally owned and operated by the Atkins families, BJ and Annette, and Wade and Christy, offers a safe and convenient location for the storage of all the treasures and belongings that matter in your life. Located at 276 IH 45 South in Huntsville, Climatec is your answer for storage needs. As acting manager, Christy looks forward to building a relationship of trust with customers as storage needs are met with efficiency and reliability.
Climatec opened in October 2018 and was anticipated with much curiosity among local citizens who wondered what this new three-story building would be. According to Christy, guesses ranged from a doctor’s office to an antique car storage facility, to a depository for stem cells. “You never know what people are going to come up with! Such imaginative minds,” she laughingly adds. Wade and Christy grew up in Huntsville and graduated from both Huntsville High School and Sam Houston State University. “It is important to us that we pay back the community we love,” she remarks. They love their hometown and particularly, as SHSU graduates, understand the collegiate needs of a place to store furniture for the summer months. Climatec meets this need in a way that offers convenience and peace of mind. Their mission statement is: Creating value in the ability to assist our customers in protecting what they wish to preserve. “We are not a franchise, but are a single-family-owned business and have set high standards by which to be known,” she remarks. “In an effort to meet these goals, our employees tour the facility several times daily to monitor cleanliness and to ensure all units are securely locked. If we find your unit unlocked, we will immediately notify you by text message. Your valuables are our concern.”
Creating value in the ability to assist our customers in protecting what they wish to preserve.
Units can be reserved online, over the phone, or inperson. Information regarding all unit sizes and monthly fees is available online. Climatec does not require long-term contracts, but instead administers accounts on a month-by-month basis. These are prorated with the rental date, so if the account is set up mid-month, then a prorated rental fee is charged for the first month, then afterwards month-to-month. Fees also include a one-time administration fee, as well as a small security deposit which is returned upon move-out if the unit is left clean and undamaged. Another nice benefit of renting at Climatec is the use of an online calculator which allows a customer to see how the storage space is utilized as items are added to the size of unit they are considering. As Christy states, “We don’t want to undersell or oversell a unit.” The guesswork is removed. Additionally, the online system is in place so people can schedule a unit and move-in without staff assistance. This has been especially helpful during the Covid crisis, eliminating the worry of person-to-person contact. Climatec is open for tenant use from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily, giving ample time to accommodate moving and storage needs. Tenants are each given a unique access code for entrance into the building, and over 30 security cameras are constantly monitored to view all movement taking place inside and outside the facility on a 24-hour, 7 days-a-week

Health Matters www.drjimshealthtips.com By James W. Jones, MD, PhD, MHA
Promotion of Emotion has the Ability to Enhance Stability There is considerable scientific information that maintaining a positive approach to life has many health benefits. POSITIVE IS GOOD. Positive people live longer and have healthier lives. Individuals with positive outlooks are troubled by fewer chronic diseases, less depression or anxiety than those with a negative outlook. Approach to life and attitude about it is tinted or even established by our emotions. And guess what--we can manage what emotions we are feeling. Our bodies react to an amazing extent to our emotional stance. Stress and the longterm detriment it brings from stress hormones is lessened with our emotions. There is little meaning discoverable in life without emotions, but few have made efforts to define them (let alone how to improve them) and how to keep emotions rational. There are almost boundless numbers of emotions because there are virtually limitless ways we may feel about what we encounter or contemplate. However, Paul Ekman, a noted psychologist, identified six basic emotions: anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness and surprise. In my opinion, the emotion that gives the most positive uplift to mood is GRATITUDE.
What characterizes the different emotions? William James stated anger represents slights, fear represents dangers, shame represents failures to live up to an ego ideal, sadness represents losses, happiness represents progress toward goal achievement, pride represents enhancement of one’s ego identity. INDEED! Naturally, emotions are part of one’s humanity and are necessary, but they must be controlled. Remember, we have a conscious and an unconscious self to control. The James-Lange psychological theory proposes the conscious self is informed about what to feel emotionally by physical actions; we frown or cry and begin to feel sad, or we smile or laugh and feel happy. Our conscious brain can take charge to smile and laugh more often. Also, start to frown less and to resolve not to get angry, without
thinking whether anger is worth the cost to your wellbeing. THERE! A great deal of damage can be the result of extremes of emotion, and it is best to decide to control the two chief emotions: anger and happiness. Surplus happiness can spiral into euphoria which can result in behaviors that humiliate. Even worse, anger can spiral out of control into frenzied rage and (even if one is alone) non-reconcilable behaviors can emerge. MODERATION! Maintain a happy countenance, and you will look better and younger. In a study, subjects were asked to estimate the age and emotional state of pictures in groups of the same people either smiling or frowning. Subjects considered smilers more likable and younger to a significant extent. OMG. When you feel an emotion erupting, make it a practice to hesitate and consider what it means and what your reaction should be. Anger hurts the angry person, because stress hormones are released. I have simply developed a “so what the heck” attitude in all cases unless my health or a loved one’s health is threatened, and that is extremely rare.

It has been my pleasure to work with Karen Altom and the Postcards team since day one. I have returned year after year, and advertise in both the Piney Woods Edition and the Lake Conroe Edition, for two reasons: first, it produces a great return on investment and is a quality product. Second, they provide a topnotch, professional staff dedicated to helping my business be as successful as possible. When 10% of new customers let us know they came to visit as a direct result of our ad, the ad has paid for itself and we have increased our customer base! (investment/not an expense)…..win/win for everyone! Kim Bius, Owner Kim’s Home & Garden Center

Physical therapy keeps you

Giggles & Grins I tried having my mother’s phone disconnected, but the customer-service rep told me that since the account was in my dad’s name, he’d have to be the one to put in the request. The fact that he’d been dead for 40 years didn’t sway her. Then a solution hit me: “If I stop paying the bill, you can turn off the service, right?” “Well, yes,” she said reluctantly. “But that would ruin his credit.”
While shopping for a bathroom scale, I found one that tracks not only weight but also body fat, bone mass, and water percentage. I nixed that one in favor of a low-tech model. As I told the salesperson, “I don’t need to be depressed four ways; one is quite enough.”

An exercise for people who are out of shape: Begin with a five-pound potato bag in each hand. Extend your arms straight out from your sides, hold them there for a full minute, and then relax. After a few weeks, move up to ten-pound potato bags. Then try 50-pound potato bags, and eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-pound potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. Once you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag. Beverly Gross

I loved the dress that I bought at a flea market. It fit perfectly, and the skirt was a swirl of intricate pleats. I wore it confidently to an evening party and glowed when a woman exclaimed, “Oh, how stunning!” Yes, I was grinning from ear to ear, until she added cheerfully, “Hang on to it, honey. Pleats will come back someday.” Mary Lou Wickham

Mustard Seed Moments by Wes Altom
Dinner with Judas Two seemingly unrelated thoughts bounce around in my brain as I work to form them into something on paper for you to understand. Let me address the thoughts, then make the connection.
that suggests Jesus had Judas at the seat of honor at what we know as the Last Supper. We know Christ knew the betrayal was coming…but he chose his reaction. Think about the words from the hymn:
First, there is a closeness, a special bond, in putting your feet under the same dining table as someone else. We schedule dinner events, and almost always do so with those we care about and share special relationships with.
“All things are ready, Come to the feast! Come, for the door is open wide; A place of honor is reserved For you at the Master’s side”
Second, I remember parenting conversations with my kids when they would get mad (read that l-i-v-i-d) at someone who hadn’t met their expectations in their young life. Usually, the closer the relationship with the party, the stronger the reaction. You always hurt the one you love, right? With wisdom from years and the luxury of being removed from the direct situation, I would remind them that the person couldn’t make them angry—it was how they were choosing to react.
We have the same invitation…the same place of honor…the same sinful heart…and the same reaction from our Lord. He knows our weakness and how we fail him, but he chooses his reaction and offers that place of honor anyway. Judas made his choice. What remains to be seen is our reaction. That’s the story still being written.
The connection is these thoughts both stem from contemplating our Lord at the table with his disciples…all of them…even Judas. There is some evidence (from knowledge of customs of the day and hints in scripture)
Anyone who meets a testing challenge head-on and manages to stick it out is mighty fortunate. For such persons loyally in love with God, the reward is life and more life. --James 1:12 (MSG)
