Do You Hear What I Hear? As I write this column, I am experiencing a time of stillness and quiet. In fact, it surprised me so much, I thought I would share. We are smack-dab in the middle of the holidays…one of the busiest times of the year. At least, that is always the case for me. In a way, the holidays are a little like raising children--you can hardly wait for them to arrive, but then you are so busy handling “everything” that you look up and they are gone. I think that is why this moment struck me so. Outside, the rain is falling. It has been all day. I normally do not mind the rain; in fact, usually I quite enjoy it. A cold rain, like the one going on now, is low on my list of likes. My sweet husband is at a meeting at church. The television is off, and I have been sitting…and thinking… and listening…and being still. I admit to you, this column was one of the things I was thinking on. Last month, I received such precious letters from readers about the column I wrote on grandparents, that I sat here thinking, “Whatever will I write about now?” If you’ve read my writings over the years, you’ve seen me say, “God always provides the idea. Every. Time.” So as I sat here, He did again. “Be still.” Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.” What better time of year to stop? What better time to be still and be in awe of the gift God gave us? If you don’t know about that gift, I’ll be happy to share. Enjoy this season. Make time for some quiet, still moments. You will be glad you did.

That’s a phrase that is commonly heard by dentists. Is it always the patient’s fault? Not necessarily! Let’s break down how you get decay in your teeth. Teeth are made up of a very hard material called Hydroxyapatite, which is the hardest material in the body. Coincidentally it lives in one of the harshest environments of the body. The process of tooth decay isn’t a linear process, it’s actually very dynamic. When you eat something, mainly sugar or carbs, bacteria feeds on it and secretes acids, which lowers your pH, and that causes the hydroxyapatite to start to break down. When you stop eating, your saliva, which has buffering minerals, starts to raise the pH again to make it more neutral or basic, which causes it to remineralize. As long as the breakdown only happens on the outside of the tooth, which is called enamel, you can remineralize the tooth. Over time if your mouth stays in a more acidic environment the hydroxyapatite breaks down enough to where you get into the inner part of the tooth, called dentin, that’s when dentistry will need to be done. Why does it seem like some people have it happen to them more often? Genetics can actually play a role. Some people have less buffering capacity in their saliva and have more/different forms of bacteria. The other is based on diet and homecare. Having a diet full of complex carbs and drinking lots of sugary drinks makes an environment for decay. Homecare is not only how often you brush/floss but how effective you do it. Using an electric toothbrush is much more effective for cleaning teeth. The amount of water you drink vastly changes the buffering ability of your saliva. It’s good practice to swish with water every time you finish eating something sugary or high in carbs. If decay is a problem for you, try to make an effort to eat less sugars, choose water over sugary drinks, and focus on good home health care. Doing those things will help you stay away from expensive dentistry! If you have a question or a topic you want to be discussed, send an email to drlogan@drscottlogan.com Aaron Fritsch, DDS

Elaine Hoffpauir Achieving a fifty-year commitment in any one area deserves a “lifetime achievement award.” Let’s meet a lady who, with one more year’s effort, will have attained two such accolades! Her name is Elaine Hoffpauir, and she teaches sixth-grade math at New Waverly Junior High School.

We will delve into your two long-term commitments shortly, but let’s first gather some facts about your childhood and what brought you to New Waverly. I was born in New Gulf, Texas, and grew up in Bay City, where my family was a ranching family along the Gulf coast. We pastured cattle on Matagorda beach and swam cattle across to Matagorda Island. I had a brother and two sisters, and we all helped with the ranching way of life. In fact, I’ve been involved in working cattle and rodeo activities all my life. Beginning at age two, you would find me riding on a horse with my dad as he worked the cattle. Love for the land has always been in my

family. Ancestors on my father‘s side surveyed land in 1828 for Stephen F. Austin to form the Old 300 Colony. The Old 300 refers to the settlers who received land grants from Stephen F. Austin. The lands selected by the colonists were along the rich bottomlands of the Brazos, Colorado, and San Bernard Rivers, extending from present-day Brenham to the Gulf of Mexico.

rodeo coach at that time was Sonny Sikes. I won the Southern Region in barrel racing in 1969-1971. I also went to the college finals in barrel racing. That competition was held in Deadwood, South Dakota the first year, and then moved to Bozeman, Montana for the next two years. I graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education.

What brought you to the New Waverly area?

It’s time to mention your first 50-year achievement. Please share that happy milestone with us.

I first moved to Huntsville in the late 1960s to attend what was then Sam Houston State Teachers College, and later, in 1969, renamed Sam Houston State University. I was on the Dean’s List and Rodeo team. My

That proud milestone is for being married to the love of my life, David Hoffpauir, for fifty years. We met at Sam Houston, where

we were members of the rodeo team and enjoyed the many rodeo activities and competitions together. We have two children, Sharon and Clay, who were also involved in rodeo during their school years. It’s been a wonderful fifty years, and today we are blessed to live near our children and five grandchildren and to experience precious family time together on a regular basis. Through the past years we have continued to enjoy the land by working cattle together as a family.

Please share with us about your teaching career and how it plays into your “almost” second fifty-year milestone. Yes, I reach that milestone if I teach one more year! I’ve been teaching for forty-nine years. During these years I’ve taught science, health, art, and math, and have been a sixth-grade math teacher for the last few years at New Waverly Junior High. I love teaching and absolutely love teaching these students. My goal is to help them succeed in life. I go home at night thinking about them, and I wake up in the morning thinking about them. I’ve had many bright and wonderful students over the past fortynine years, and I have cared about each and every student. They are precious, and my heart’s desire is they

all excel and succeed in life by doing their absolute best, each to his or her own ability. Teaching math is a challenge that I enjoy in trying to help my students understand and comprehend how to reach a solution to a particular problem. I’m known for my sayings such as, “There’s more than one way to skin a cat.” I try to teach the kids a problem can be solved in more than one way. Helping

them to gain the skills to become competent and confident is my passion. I’m always delighted to see students again once they have graduated. Some have gone on to be lawyers, law enforcement officers, nurses, and even professors at SHSU. I remarked to my son that I feel bad when I don’t remember a name, and he reminded me I’ve had forty-nine years of classrooms filled with students. If I forget a name, it’s okay!

In forty-nine years of teaching, there are surely awards to tell us about. Please share some of these with our readers. Let me mention two awards of which I am proud. The first is the Mason’s Award from The Grand Lodge of Texas at the New Waverly Masonic Lodge. It was the Mirabeau B. Lamar award

for excellence in teaching for commitment and dedication to the children of our community. The second award that I will mention was from the New Waverly Special Education Department several years ago for going the extra mile for children with special needs. I’m certainly grateful for these recognitions, but more grateful that I was able to help the children each of these awards represent. Teaching Junior High students is a busy endeavor!

How do you unwind in your spare time? As I mentioned, we spend a lot of time with our family. That’s priority number one! We still work cattle and, although I’m not on horseback anymore, I have become the official recordkeeper. As the official recordkeeper, I keep a count of the mommas and their calves, how many calves they have had, when they were

born, and other such statistics. We all still love the ranching life! And my second priority is cooking for my family! I love to cook the things they love to eat--such as chicken-n-dumplings, chicken spaghetti, and chicken fried steak.

Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas!

We must have your chicken fried steak recipe! We would also like to know your thoughts about living in New Waverly. It’s simple. Homegrown beef, pounded and sprinkled with seasoned salt, dipped in flour, dunked in an egg and milk mixture, encrusted in cracker crumbs, then fried to a lovely golden brown. Serve with heaps of cream gravy and either mashed potatoes or rice, depending on whose tastebuds you are appealing to. My family loves anything and everything, and I enjoy putting on a big spread for our family get-togethers.

All Natural Nolan Ryan Angus Beef Burgers and Blue Bell Ice Cream!!! Family owned since 1973 with

I love a small community with small schools. It is easy to build relationships here and to call many people “friends.” We have enjoyed this area immensely and I have loved, and still love, teaching the students of this beautiful community.

Beautiful arrangements for your holiday table.

Thank you, Mrs. Hoffpauir, for your time and for your commitment to the students of New Waverly! If I might make a personal plea, please stay one more year and make it a big fifty! By doing so, you will have accomplished that second fifty-year milestone AND my granddaughter will be in your sixth-grade math class next year!

Dear Gabby Welcome back to the Dear Gabby advice column. Blessings to you in this precious Christmas season. We seem to get wrapped up in the gifts during the holidays and forget that it’s the thought that counts. With that being said, giving a memorable gift to someone you care about is important. My most memorable gift was when I was 26 and still living with my parents. They gave me a set of luggage. I got the message. Remember the reason for the season and drop me a line to Dear Gabby at PostcardsLive.com.

DEAR GABBY

for

Is there a proper time for neighbors to turn off their Christmas lights? The ones right outside my window blink, and it looks like a disco party in my bedroom all night long!

District Clerk Political ad paid by Madilene Loosier Campaign. NOTICE: IT IS A VIOLATION OF STATE LAW (CHAPTERS 392 AND 393, TRANSPORTATION CODE) TO PLACE THIS SIGN IN THE RIGHT-OF-WAY OF A HIGHWAY.

BOOGIE NIGHTS DEAR BOOGIE Christmas lights should be merry and bright, but not bright enough to encourage aircraft to land on the roof! They should also be turned off when the homeowner goes to bed. Let’s hope your neighbor is not a day sleeper and will cease and desist the strobe lights when Christmas is over. GABBY

DEAR GABBY I haven’t put up a Christmas tree yet, because we are now the proud owners of a pandemic cat. She is delightful and very entertaining, but she does love to jump and climb. What are the chances of decorating with an energetic kitten in the house and the tree surviving? CRAZY CAT MOM DEAR CRAZY Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree, your ornaments are history. Well, not necessarily. I have a cat and a Christmas tree. It’s possible. A Christmas tree is like a cardboard box on steroids to a cat. It provides height, a place to hide, and is full of toys - all things cats love. If you must decorate a tree, attach it firmly to a wall; all cats think they’re a “star.” I’d use an artificial tree, so there is no water involved when the tree faints (the cat will act like that’s what happened). Wrap the tree trunk in foil and place a few lemon or orange peels around the base. And if you distribute small jingle bells around the tree, you’ll at least know when all that fails. GABBY

CONFIDENTIAL TO GLASS HALF-EMPTY: That may be true at the moment, but you’re overlooking one important aspect about life in general--the glass is refillable. Go for it!

The Garden Post By Kim Bius

Let Heaven and Nature Sing We thank our Creator for blessing gardeners with a varied palette of colors, plants, and the natural beauty of our environment to be our workplace…..wonders never cease! Now is the time, to plant trees and Now is an excellent time to see fall color at the nurseries before planting. Planting in late fall gives gardeners 6 months of cool rainy weather before the heat of summer returns. Planting now also allows for fewer “waterings” between rains, giving newly planted trees a higher probability of surviving if a consistent form of irrigation is not available. After planting, apply root stimulator by Fertilome. This is a great product that feeds the root system to encourage immediate growth, to help anchor the tree and begin sending nutrients upward… and is also a great product on ailing plants. The dosage of nitrogen is low, and you use 4 tablespoons per 3’ of plant height. This is a “must” on large trees over 3” caliber and transplanted trees and shrubs. Use on planting and again in 6 weeks. Yes, this can be applied in the winter months. This is also the best time to plant azaleas and camellias, for the same reasons. Both

plants have “zero” drought tolerance and respond well to cooler temperatures and less intense heat. Camellias will do best if planted in a northern exposure, but will also do well when placed in an

We have many new folks moving into our area, and we have the privilege of teaching “Texas Gardening 101.” Southeast Texas has a 12-month planting season, although August and February can be a bit extreme in temperatures. Placing the plant in the correct sunlight, drainage, temperature, and water are the most important factors. Soil can be amended. It is a safe bet to say 85% of plant fatalities are caused by one of the above conditions not being met, and the remaining 15% is disease/infestation, which is easily cured with a bit of preventative care. No garden column in December would be complete without the proper care of poinsettias. Poinsettias are tropical plants,

A popular myth is that the milky substance of the plant is poisonous, but research shows the plant not to be fatally toxic, but can cause severe stomach irritation to small animals. ‘Tis the season of thanksgiving and miracles. Wishing you the merriest Christmas filled with love, laughter and health.

Trippin’ Story & Photos by Mike Yawn

The Bewitching Wichitas There are mountains in Oklahoma. They aren’t large mountains—Coloradans would probably think of them as “cute”—but they are mountains. Indeed, the state has four distinct mountain ranges: the Arbuckles, the Ozarks, the Ouachitas, and the Wichitas. The latter of these, the Wichita Mountains, are mystical and enchanting, offering a diversity of flora and fauna, numerous recreational activities, and beautiful views, making for a perfect long-weekend visit.

30  Postcards Magazine: Piney Woods Edition  |  December 2021

s

The History This area has been inhabited for at least a thousand years by the Wichita people, whose full territory covered Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Their religion reflected what was important to their lives, with a focus on the land and wildlife surrounding them and, according to one ethnologist, “more than the ordinary consideration of the infinite.” They were semi-nomadic, living in beehive-shaped lodges for most of the year, but following the bison for sustenance in the winter months. By the 19th century, however, the Wichita people’s largest village was in southwestern Oklahoma, near the mountains that now share their name.

These mountains are geologically unique, having formed some 500 million years ago, in what geology textbooks describe as a “failed continental rift.” If so, it was a magnificent failure, producing a pleasing line of rolling mountains, massive boulders of exposed granite, and an unusual habitat for wildlife and plant life. Indeed, the area’s history, beauty, and attractiveness to living forms prompted President Teddy Roosevelt to designate some 60,000 acres of this region as a wildlife preserve in 1905, making it the oldest site managed by the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS).

much time to gawk, point, and photograph. Looks, as they say, can be deceiving. According to the Fish and Wildlife Service, bison are as fast as horses, capable of speeds up to 35 miles an hour and are—I find this almost unbelievable—“extremely agile, able to turn quickly and jump high fences.” You really don’t want to anger a bison. Helpfully, the FWS notes that you can “judge a bison’s mood by watching its tail,” which, apparently, operates as something of a middle finger, rising in periods of anger.

The Wildlife and the Legends Today, there is much to manage. It is home to almost 1,000 plant species, including the intriguing gold cobblestone lichen; more than 200 bird species; and 50 species of mammal. Among the mammals is the bison, which once numbered some 20,000,000 in the Great Plains, but by the turn of the 20th century had vanished entirely from Oklahoma. They were reintroduced in 1907 by— again—President Roosevelt, who suggested that 15 of them be moved from, of all places, the Bronx Zoo. Today, there are almost 700 American buffalo on the Refuge, and they can be seen regularly in most areas of the park. In fact, in half a dozen visits to the Refuge, we have never not seen them. They are large creatures— the largest land mammals in North America— weighing up to 2,000 pounds. They take up a lot of space, and when we have witnessed them, they moved slowly, when they moved at all, giving us

Wild herds of Texas Longhorns also roam the Refuge, along with many deer and elk. The elk, however, are mostly out of sight, dwelling in less-travelled areas of the Refuge. In September and October, however, the Refuge offers special “Elk Bugling Tours,” allowing visitors to access these areas with the hopes of spotting bull elk engaged in their aggressive competition for cow elk, bugling all the while. Perhaps the most entertaining animal to observe on the Refuge is the prairie dog. With more than 20,000 acres of mixed grass prairie, these creatures have their choice of homesites. Early travelers described miles of prairie dog villages, and from the vestiges visible today, such reports are credible. It is, perhaps, damning with faint praise to call these animals the cutest among the order rodentia, but they really are entertaining to watch, and children will enjoy seeing them sun themselves, dine on grass, or occasionally frolic with friends. The prairie, of course, is also a birder’s haven. There are the horned grebe, several species of woodpecker, and the endangered and elusive black-capped vireo. Also living in the Refuge are numerous birds of prey: merlins, kestrels, and several species of hawk—including northern harriers, which can be seen swooping down on other birds, field mice, and even prairie dogs.

Such sights may have given rise to the legend of Piamempits, who, according to the rich and mystical lore of Wichita elders, was a “giant cannibal owl.” This creature lived in a cave in the Wichita Mountains, but he prowled at night, searching for and devouring naughty children while they slept. If this wasn’t sufficient to keep children in line, there were stories of Teihiihan, a “race of cannibal dwarves,” who had sharp teeth, one eye, and a penchant for kidnapping small children. Of course, we may have been overly sensitive to such tales, inasmuch as our first visit to the Wichitas corresponded not only with Halloween, but also with a full moon. We lingered in the Refuge after sunset, and as this Full Hunter’s Moon arose behind a veil of clouds, we tried to dwell more on the Wichita people’s moon deity, Bright Shining Woman—a generally beneficent deity and Mother of the Universe—and less on Piamempits and Teihiihan.

The Mountains In absolute terms, the elevation levels of the Wichita Mountains are modest. Even the highest mountain peaks in the range reach only about 2,500 feet above sea level. But this is Oklahoma, which is otherwise largely flat, and even small elevations allow for expansive views across the entire southwestern part of the state. And, this being Oklahoma, even the same views are altered throughout the day, as weather events come and go. These views are best reached by hiking, although the summit of Mt. Scott, the second highest peak in the Refuge, can be reached by car. Mt. Scott offers 360-degree views of the Refuge; nearby

communities; and a few of the Refuge’s 13 lakes, some of which can take on a mystical quality during periods of fog or heavy weather. One of these, the Jed Johnson Lake, is particularly picturesque. The Jed Johnson Tower, constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1941, is 60 feet tall, and was formerly used as a fire watch tower. Because of structural issues, it is no longer open to the public, but it is visible from many spots in the park and is accessible via a two-mile hike. Elk Mountain Trail is also recommended, offering wonderful views of the Refuge and numerous opportunities for wildlife spotting, all while intersecting numerous water features. Our most recommended hike, however, is Little Baldy Trail, which offers almost perfect views at sunset, providing a lot of punch for a round-trip less than two miles in length.

A Holy City The Wichita Mountains, where tales of Piamempit and Teihiihan were once passed around campfires and in beehive-shaped grass lodges, might seem like an unlikely spot to build a simulated Jerusalem. Reverend Anthony Mark Wallock began offering sunrise Easter services in the Mountains in 1927. The annual service proved popular, and a “Passion Play” was added. By the mid-1930s, during the height of the New Deal, the federal government provided a grant to build a Holy City. The Works Progress Administration undertook the construction,

and using locally quarried cobblestone, workers built key landmarks from Jesus’ life: Herod’s Court, Mary’s Garden, a Lord’s Supper building, Pilate’s Judgment Hall, the Gateway to Jerusalem, and even a Golgotha. Nearly 90 years later, the structures still stand— and the Easter pageant is still performed, making it one of the longest-running annual Passion Play performances in the country.

The Magic of the Wichitas This enchanting land, marked by granite mountainous outcroppings, rolling hills, and diverse wildlife, is a natural wonder. It is no wonder, then, that the people who have encountered it have projected their own spiritual beliefs on the land. From the terrors of the Teihiihan to the spiritual rebirth and renewal associated with Easter, the Mountains, the wildlife, and the elements provide a rich land for “more than an ordinary consideration of the infinite.”

If the grass is greener on the other side, yours may need watering.

Growth is the ONLY evidence of life.

Grandpa used a tranquilizer, too. He called it WORK.

God does not promise a comfortable journey – only a safe landing.

What do you worry about? It seems as though things are worse now than ever. It doesn’t take long to find something that we should all be worried about. Just look at the state of our political system, worldwide pandemics, and supply chain issues. The examples seem endless. Some people are more prone to worry than others, and financial markets have always been quick to worry about what will happen next. The major media outlets don’t do much to help with all this worry. Over the years they have finely honed their ability to word headlines in a way that prompt us to pay attention. We are bombarded with headlines and news bits that make it seem as though things continue to get worse. The same is true for the financial news. The headlines at times overstate the severity of financial events to get us to pay attention. No wonder so many of us worry. I would argue there is no more (and probably no less) to worry about now than in the past. It feels like it is worse because we are in the middle of it, and our access to news / commentary has increased dramatically. The constant flow of information can be overwhelming, and it is hard to determine what to believe with so many opposing views. In many cases a convincing argument can be made on many sides of the same issue. It is not always clear how to move forward with the information we are given. So, as an investor, how do you know what you should be doing to reach your long-term goals. Part of the answer is to work with a professional that can help remove some of the emotion from investing. In addition, having goals to reference back to will help you stay the course. Finally, having a financial professional that operates by a defined and repeatable process will help with the decisions you will be faced with. At Global Financial Partners, we would be honored to be the professionals to help you. We work hard to help our clients “Enjoy More, Worry Less”. As we approach the Christmas season, let’s take a few minutes to reflect on how good we have it. While there are things that could be better, there is so much to be thankful for. Take some time to spend with family and friends and be sure to discuss all the good things going on in the world. Merry Christmas!

A Special Conversation Story by Amy Barnett Submitted Photos

Zach Neil Zach Neil was not supposed to be a country singer – it’s as simple as that. He grew up working on his family’s farm in Exeter, Ontario, Canada, where tending crops was the only way of life he knew. As a child he planned to graduate from high school, earn a degree in agricultural business, and become a third-generation farmer. But when he turned 16, a simple question from a stranger changed everything. Postcards Magazine sat down with Zach to learn more about the conversation that caused him to pivot and find his own path from rural Canada to Music City – and now to the Lone Star State.

What was it like growing up on the family farm in Canada? We grew rutabagas, wheat, and soybeans. It was hard work, but what I loved the most about it was the sense of accomplishment each day. You saw the tangible results of your hard work daily, as well as over the course of the 7-8 month growing period. It was cool to be able to take something from start to finish and have that sense of accomplishment. Is the farm still in your family? Yes, my mom and dad are still there, along with my brothers and sister. My parents are retired now, but my sister and brother in-law are still farming. What made you change your career path from farming? Music and life happened. My parents made me and my siblings take music lessons – piano lessons, specifically. And I did not enjoy those at all. I begged them for a guitar and, looking back on it, I don’t really know why, but I thought playing the guitar would be cool. That was it. So, when I was 12, they got me a guitar for Christmas, and I never stopped playing it. They had to tell me to put the guitar down because there was farm work to be done. They had to beg me to practice the piano, but they had to beg me to stop practicing the guitar so I could get some chores done. I still really enjoyed farming, but when I was 16, I did a Battle of the Bands competition in high school, and one of the judges, who was an engineer on a lot of rock records on the west coast, pulled me aside and basically asked, “Hey is this what you want to do? I know a couple people, and I could make some calls for you.” And so, at 16, of course I said, “Yeah, sure, that sounds great.” And that was it. That really got the ball rolling. I made trips to Nashville and got introduced to people there, and the

rest, as they say, is history. So, that one question really was the turning point for you? Yeah. And, going back to my band in high school, what made us unique wasn’t that we were good – because we weren’t, but we were a bunch of young teenagers playing traditional country music. Everybody our age was playing rock, and we were playing Randy Travis, Keith Whitley, and George Jones songs. So that kind of separated us and got people’s attention. I got steered toward Nashville, got to know some people in Nashville, graduated high school and boom – made the move. What happened when you got to Tennessee? I made the move to Nashville, and we were going for major label deals. We did a showcase for a major label, and they loved everything about us, but said we were “too country.” But you know, it is what it is. We didn’t fit into that box. The business side of music

is a big part of it, and I understand that. But I just didn’t fit into what was hip or trendy, and because of that, they passed. That’s when I decided I would go out and play my kind of music, because there are still a lot of people who like that kind of music. So, the focus really changed for me, especially in that time when social media and streaming platforms were really starting to take off. There were other avenues to get your music out there for people to find you and hear you. Who are some of the singers who helped shape you as a vocalist? Randy Travis, Mark Chesnutt, George Strait, Alan Jackson, and Brooks and Dunn – you know, a lot of guys from the ‘90s. That’s the era I grew up in. And then there was an oldies show on the local station at home growing up on Saturday mornings. It was basically everything from the early ‘80s and before. So, sometimes on Saturday mornings, it would be on in the house, and you would hear George

You can definitely hear a ‘90s country sound in your voice. Major labels may have said you were “too country,” but that’s what we like in Texas. You seem to have found a great fit here in the Lone Star State. How did you get here? I’ve got nieces that live in the Houston area, and I had family in the Austin area for a long time, so I used to come down and was getting exposed to the Texas Music Scene even while still pursuing the Nashville thing. But I was understanding that Texas is much more receptive to the kind of country music I love to do. And Texas feels a little more like home to me. Country music in Texas has fiddles, steels, and songs that have something to say.

I showed up to write with Neal Coty and Jeff Silvey, and I really didn’t have anything that I wanted to write, but I hoped one of them had something. I had actually watched a Rolling Stones documentary two or three nights before, and I don’t know if that influenced me or not, but I started playing this guitar riff and Neal goes, “that’s like a Rolling Stones kind of thing,” and Jeff just spit out, “Well, she’s really good, and I’m not too bad,” and I think Neal said, “and me, I ain’t half-bad.” And boom, like that, we all said, “there’s the idea.” We just had fun with it and wrote it in less than an hour. It just kind of fell out and the next thing you know, I started playing it at a couple of acoustic gigs that I was doing, just to test it out and see. I played it, and people loved it. So, we released it as a single.

Your current single Half Bad made is to the Top 40 on all Texas Country charts. What was the inspiration behind this song?

Texas radio has really embraced it, and Texas has embraced you. You were a nominee for the Emerging Artist award at the Texas Country

Jones, Conway Twitty, and really oldschool stuff like Hank Williams.

Music Awards. What was that like? It was exciting and an honor. I know that’s what you’re supposed to say, but it’s the truth. We’ve really been relative newcomers to the Texas Country Music scene, which is why it’s called emerging artist. But there’s a lot of talented people, so to be selected and narrowed down to that group of people is a real honor. It’s an indication that we’re fitting into the Texas music scene.

Of course, I also like getting together with friends, kicking back around a campfire, and just relaxing.

What are you doing when you’re not playing music? Outdoors stuff. I like being outside, and that can be fishing or getting the chainsaw out and trimming up trees. I’ve got some property, so the stuff I used to have to do on the farm growing up has turned into the stuff I enjoy doing – the kind of stuff that’s an escape.

Let’s play a game called “5 Bests.”

Now that you are an honorary Texan by choice, what are some of your favorite things about our great state? I love the strong and independent spirit of Texas and Texans! And of course, the BBQ!

Best Christmas movie? Christmas Vacation Best place to shop? Bass Pro Shops Best advice you’ve ever been given? Listen more, talk less. Great advice we should all live by!

Best country song, ever? “Everything That Glitters,” by Dan Seals

Huntsville. It was certainly an accomplishment, as was acquiring his first tour bus – another milestone that year. There was no doubt his career was taking off, and rightfully so. When you combine hard work and determination, stellar songwriting, and a voice that sounds like no other – you get magic. The following year, McCollum’s dream of a major record deal came true when he signed with Universal Music Group Nashville (MCA Records).

home to set the record for the most tickets sold for a country concert at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands. More than 17-thousand fans showed up to see their hometown boy.

Even when the pandemic halted live music, McCollum stayed focused and found national radio success. He earned his first No. 1 song in December 2020 when Pretty Heart climbed to the top of the charts.

“For my family to be there and get to share that was special. The only thing that has ever mattered to me truly while chasing this dream was making my family proud and letting them know that I understand who I come from and what I come from and how lucky I am to have them in my life,” he said. “I think that night, they were proud.”

“I graduated high school on that same stage ten years ago. To graduate and say I was going to go chase a dream and play country music for a living – people probably thought I was crazy. Adults wish you the best, but they know how the real world works and see the harsh reality of life and what it can be. So, for them to be there and witness it firsthand and see how big it’s gotten, it kind of solidified everything,” said McCollum. The City of Conroe also declared Oct. 2 “Parker McCollum Day” and gave him a key to the city.

If you are wondering how he could top this level of success, buckle up. The past 12 months have been the most exciting yet. McCollum made his Grand Ole Opry debut, earned a platinum record, released his first fulllength album on MCA Records, toured with Dierks Bentley, and got engaged to the love of his life, Hallie Ray Light. He also became an Apple Music Up Next artist, performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and came

If you missed the sold-out show in The Woodlands, mark your calendar for March 12, 2022. McCollum will take the big stage at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Let’s help him sell out NRG Stadium!

Remember to Breathe By Linda W. Perkins

Snowflakes drift

Reminds me

Across the frosted glass

It was spring once

As I peer out

Not too long ago.

Looking for sunshine

I want to go back

Longing for warmth.

But time pushes me forward.

A frozen rosebud

I know that soon

A butterfly will emerge

With all of my might.

I must remind myself

From the long winter

This too shall pass

To hold on to hope

Trapped in its cocoon.

I know that’s true

And remember to breathe.

How hard the waiting

But oh, to keep my strength

Alone in darkness

In this season of change

Pushing towards the light

To survive the metamorphosis

Timeless Treasures

Christmas Traditions Holiday traditions can bring friends and family closer, make fond memories that last a lifetime, and warm the heart! Via social media, Postcards asked readers to share some of their favorites…which we now share here with you! If you don’t have traditions…it’s never too late to start. Maybe this will spark some ideas!

Our parents “bury” (hide) our Christmas pickle somewhere on the tree every year. Then they cheat and tell my brother where it is each year, and my lucky brother wins! Not really, but we are very competitive, and we are both on a mission to find that pickle! The winner gets to open a present early! Kelsey S

We had Santa bags. They went under the tree after Thanksgiving, and Santa might stop by any time before Christmas to check on the boys. When he did, he would leave a little something in the Santa bag like a book, a candy, a Christmas shirt. They would check their Santa bags several times a day. We still do this! Jennifer M

Gathering with about 60 of my family members to read letters from my mom, celebrate together, and pray the Rosary like we have every Christmas Eve since long before I was born. Ray H

Decorating with Holiday Tunes blasting and Hot Apple Cider brewing (with caramel vodka for Momma’s ) Rena A

We pick a different country at Thanksgiving and research how they celebrate Christmas, then we add that to our Christmas, making a couple dishes from that country and finding songs and pictures, etc. I did it with my kids, now continuing with my grandson. Debbie D

We read one chapter of Luke every evening starting on December 1st. We finish the story of Jesus on Christmas Eve. It’s a beautiful way to celebrate our Lord. Each member of our family does this, even though we are scattered everywhere. Joy S

Since animals were involved when Jesus was born in a manger, it should come as no surprise that animals play host to an event shedding light on the “reason for the season.” Houston Zoo Lights, now in its tenth year, is sponsored by TXU Energy and is one of the largest and most visited holiday light displays in the nation. The Houston Zoo is transformed into a winter wonderland, and one of Houston’s most well-loved holiday traditions. While many light displays are drive-thru adventures, this is truly an immersive experience. Guests can sip hot chocolate as they stroll through the beautiful Houston Zoo grounds and take in the sights and sounds of the season. Fifteen miles of earth-friendly LED lighting illuminate the zoo’s historic oak trees and decorate the paths to light the way.

LED Lights Help Wildlife The Houston Zoo saves wildlife by only using energy-saving LED lights during Zoo Lights. The LED lights are using 85% less power than incandescent lights, allowing the Houston Zoo to conserve lots of energy.

Tons of holiday lights end up in landfills which spill over into animals’ natural homes. To help cut down on this waste, the Houston Zoo has recycled more than 24,000 pounds of holiday lights since 2016. Everyone can save wildlife by bringing and recycling broken or old holiday lights at the Houston Zoo throughout Zoo Lights. Save money on electricity bills and save wildlife by using LED lights at home.

Know Before You Go During the nightly event, the zoo animals settle down for their long winter’s nap, and the star attraction is the lights. To see the zoo’s animals, guests are encouraged to visit the Houston Zoo during regular daytime hours, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (last entry at 3:00 PM). Zoo Lights event is a separate ticket from daytime zoo admission. Zoo Lights hours are 5:30-10:30 p.m., with last entry at 9:30 p.m. Tickets will NOT be available for purchase at the gate and are only available online through houstonzoo.org. Buy early for the best price! Note: Ticket prices are the same for adults and children. Children ages 2 and under are free. Present the digital ticket on your mobile device to scan for entry. This year, in order to control flow and allow for better distancing, there is timed entry. Your reserved time slot is your assigned arrival time. Military, First Responders, and Educators are all eligible for 20% off admission throughout the Zoo Lights season. Contact the call center at 713-533-6500 with event questions, questions about purchasing tickets or the online ordering system. Use the main entrance at 6200 Hermann Park Drive. The Zoo does not have its own parking lot; free parking is available in lots in Hermann Park outside the Zoo. Per CDC guidelines, masks are strongly encouraged for all guests inside Zoo buildings. The Zoo is a sprawling outdoor venue with abundant space to allow for safe social distancing, and the Zoo is limiting capacity during the event. Along the Zoo Lights path, you’ll encounter plenty of yummy holiday treats including s’mores kits, hot chocolate, and more! Multiple food locations will be available, including Cypress Circle Café during Zoo Lights hours. Stroller and scooter rentals will be available during Zoo Lights. Rentals may be paid via credit card only. Houston Zoo Lights is open daily through January 9 (Closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day).

What’s Cookin’ Snowballs

Directions

Ingredients

Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

1 cup butter

Step 2: Cream the butter with 1/2 cup of the confectioners’ sugar and the vanilla. Mix in the flour, pecans, and salt. Roll about 1 tablespoon or so of dough into balls and place on an ungreased cookie sheet.

½ cup confectioners’ sugar ¼ tsp salt 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour 1 cup chopped pecans 1/3 cup confectioners’ sugar for dusting, or as needed ¼ cup finely crushed peppermint candy canes (optional)

Festive Olive and Cheese Appetizer Ingredients 24 sprigs fresh rosemary 12 oz marinated mozzarella balls, drained ½ cup pitted Castelvetrano olives, rinsed and dried ¼ cup pitted Kalamata olives, rinsed and drained ¼ cup sugar plum tomatoes

Step 3: Bake in preheated oven until bottoms are golden, about 15 minutes. Do not allow these cookies to get too brown: it’s better to undercook them than to overcook them. While cookies are still hot, roll them in confectioners’ sugar. Once they have cooled, roll them in confectioners’ sugar once more.

Directions Step 1: Cut rosemary sprigs and arrange into a 10-inch wreath. Start by placing 1 sprig at a 45-degree angle with the tip facing outwards. Continue adding sprigs in the same direction until you have formed a full circle. Step 2: Arrange clusters of mozzarella balls, olives, and tomatoes over the rosemary. Serve with toothpicks on the side.

Living with Children By: John K. Rosemond www.rosemond.com

Choose 1 of 2 Paths with Kids’ Anxieties Q: I recently changed my almost 4-year-old son’s preschool. My son, once fearless, has become reluctant to simply get out of the car in the morning and go into the school. There’s always a teacher at curbside, welcoming the kids. At his old school, he’d just get out of the car and go in. Now, I have to walk him in, then he doesn’t want me to leave. Once I go, however, he’s fine. Did I make a mistake changing his school?

A: Unfortunately, today’s all-too-typical parent tends toward feeling if their child has a negative reaction to a parental decision, the decision was probably wrong and may well cause psychological problems. A child’s emotional reactions are not accurate barometers of parental decisions. A child is not in any position to know what is in his best interest. He may know when he is thirsty, but he does not know whether he should have water or a soda. If you give him water and he cries for soda, this does not mean you have done the wrong thing, much less that he will develop psychological issues concerning water. In this case, your son may know he is anxious, but he does not know the solution to his anxiety is for him to simply get out of the car and walk inside. As you have discovered, you cannot talk your son into opening the car door and walking in on his own. No anxious child has ever been talked out of his anxieties. Older children can be talked (sometimes) into doing what is necessary to test their anxieties against reality and therefore overcoming them (e.g., riding a horse), but when it comes to the anxieties of a young child, there are but two paths for parents to take: forget it or force it. Forgetting it means deciding the issue isn’t really that important (e.g., riding a horse) and it is in the best interest of all to wait until the child is older before re-introducing the anxiety-arousing event or thing. When the issue is important (e.g., getting out of the car and walking into school), then forcing the issue becomes a necessity.

Here’s a fact: When parents cater to a child’s anxieties, they worsen. So, first, redefine the problem. This amounts to verbal sleight-of-hand that allows a parent to force a change in behavior without putting on the role of serious disciplinarian. Tell your son you’ve spoken to his doctor about the problem and the doctor says reluctance to get out of the car in the morning means your son is not getting enough sleep. So, if he doesn’t simply get out of the car at your first prompt (i.e., if he hesitates, requiring you to tell him twice), you’ve been instructed to make sure he gets more sleep that night by putting him to bed immediately after supper. Remind your son that you have to do what the doctor says. If, the next day, when you pull up to the school, he does not seem to want to get out of the car, you simply say, “Oh, you’re tired. C’mon. I’ll walk you in.” Make no big deal of it, but put him to bed after supper that evening. Not one of the many parents to whom I have recommended this approach have ever told me it failed.

Furthermore, I have never spoken to a pediatrician who disapproved of his authority being invoked in this creative manner.

LAURA’S CLEANING SERVICE

82  Postcards Magazine: Piney Woods Edition  |  December 2021

• Deep Cleanings • Residential • Foreclosures Cleaning may seem like a very mundane thing to do for most of us, but for Laura Lechinger, it has become her passion. She takes it very seriously and, for the past 23 years, she has dedicated her life to helping others clean their homes. It all started when her kids were young and brought friends over to play. When their parents would come to pick them up, they always commented how nice and clean her house was, so in 1998, she decided to open up her own cleaning business, Laura’s Cleaning Service. Since then, she’s been helping others transform their living spaces into clean, healthy, and visually appealing homes. Prior to opening up her own cleaning business, Laura also worked as a CNA nurse and as an occupational therapist assistant, but she always had a passion for cleaning. Laura describes her business as a traveling cleaning service, providing their amenities to a vast area which extends all the way from Leona, Brenham, Caldwell, Trinity, Lovelady, Livingston, New Waverly, to Huntsville, and pretty much anywhere in between. Whether you’re walking into a newly built home or rental property, or having company over for a special occasion, you want the experience to be pleasant for prospective buyers, renters, or guests. Laura’s Cleaning Service ensures they arrive at a clean and sanitary environment and leave with the best impression. “Cleaning can be very interesting work,” said Laura, “and we have the opportunity

to meet people from all walks of life. Some of our patrons are famous people--authors, attorneys, DPS officers, and very prestigious community members, but we respect their privacy and maintain confidentiality.” On one occasion, Laura recalled receiving a call from a man with an unusual request. He asked if we could clean his ‘crawl space.’ I said, “Sir, excuse me?” Then he repeated the question, “Can you come clean the crawl space underneath my house?” and I said, “Oh, no sir. No, no, no! We don’t do stuff like that.” “That’s just something you don’t normally get a request to do,” said Laura, “and I couldn’t help but think that guy was killing people and sticking them in his crawl space!” Laura admitted, jokingly, that she watches a lot of crime TV shows, and said if she walks into a customer’s house and sees a freezer--one of those long chest ones, she gets a little bit leery, “because you know, sometimes, they put bodies in them!” As she was telling these stories, Laura pointed out that in her line of work, she has to maintain a good sense of humor, but always takes her work very seriously--adding, there is never a dull moment.

Most of Laura’s customers range in age from 40 on up. “I just love all my customers,” said Laura, but she admitted to having a soft spot for her elderly customers. “I truly enjoy listening to their stories. We are often contracted out by APS (Adult Protective Services) to clean at elderly people’s homes, and I’ve been told that I have a way of working with people,

particularly with this population.” As part of their service for the elderly, Laura’s Cleaning Services offers Adult Protective Cleaning, which means they wear protective safety gear during their visits. They offer general and deep cleaning services starting at a minimum of $125 per house (price may vary depending on the size of the house). Laura’s Cleaning Service currently has a team of 8 crew members, and generally are split into 2 crews. A single crew can handle up to 6 houses a day. When

they have a specialized cleaning job, such as cleaning out a hoarder/packrat home, they all work together--and for everyone’s protection and safety--gloves, masks, and hazmat clothes are worn. For these jobs, they use separate equipment and disposable cleaning supplies.

Laura is a Certified Hoarder Specialist, as well as a Certified Chronic Disorganization Specialist, and she has many years of experience. “We understand hoarders have a difficult time letting go of certain items. The process can be very emotional and

challenging. Our goal is to help our customers improve their quality of life.” Occasionally, younger generations also need cleaning services, but it’s usually their parents who contact us. Laura has been a resident of Grimes County since the early 70s. Her grandparents on her mother’s side were long-time Huntsville residents. Her grandfather, Dewitt Cauthen, worked at the Sam Houston State University Museum as a groundskeeper for many years. In fact, their family home was located right behind the museum. Laura also had several uncles and aunts that lived in Huntsville. Her uncle, James Cauthen, owned a little country store off I-45 and Lake Road. She couldn’t remember the name of the store, but she said it has long been a part of her childhood memories. Needless to say, Laura has deep roots in Huntsville, so it’s no surprise that--although she has never lived in Huntsville--she considers it her hometown. After all, she does all her business and shopping there. “I love everything about Huntsville,” said Laura, “especially the people. Everyone is always so friendly and courteous.” In previous years, Laura was a member of the Huntsville Chamber of Commerce and is currently working on rejoining. She gives often to Good Shepherd Mission, and before the end of this year, she also hopes to get involved with helping out at the SAAFE House and the Rita B. Huff Animal Shelter. Her parents, Leslie and Marie Hall, raised her and her siblings in a very strict, Christian home. “There were five of us,” said Laura. “My older brother David and sister Sandra passed away at the age of 53, both from some form of cancer.” Still living are her brother Johnny and the youngest, Debora, who currently lives in the Magnolia area, but has plans to move back to Grimes County in the near future. According to Laura, she never left Grimes County, because she liked and was used to the small-town country living. Laura graduated from Anderson High School in 1985, then married Kenny, her husband of 35 years. They had two children, Michelle, and Austin, and both live close to them. Laura and Kenny have four grandchildren, “Our pride and joy,” said Laura, “and they live next door, so we get to see and enjoy them pretty often.”

When she is not at work, Laura enjoys spending time at home relaxing with her husband and being with her grandchildren. She also loves listening to KSAM radio. She’s been listening to the same station since the early 80s. “I won roses and valentine’s candy on one of their games back in ’86,” said Laura. She has been a member of the Christian Biblical Church of God in Houston since 2009, and their day of Sabbath is on Saturday. Fortunately, they have the option to attend virtually, which makes it better for them since they don’t like driving in Houston. Laura is a member of the WGNO, which stands for Women Generating Network Opportunities. The group promotes women-owned businesses in and around the Huntsville area. At Laura’s Cleaning Service, they specialize in deep cleanings. They are insured, licensed, and bonded, and do everything from moveouts, move-ins, rental properties, foreclosures, new constructions, and so much more! “We can either take our own cleaning supplies and equipment, or if the customer prefers that we use their personal supplies and equipment, we can do that as well. It really depends on what the customers want,” said

Vet Connect: By Steve VanWagner, D.V.M.

Colic in Horses The word “colic” simply refers to abdominal pain; while this is a very simple definition, colic itself can be hugely complex, ranging from gas pain to gastrointestinal (GI) obstruction. Colic is one of the most serious illnesses a horse can endure, and it is critical for horse owners to recognize the early signs, because the sooner the horse is seen and treated, the greater the chances of recovery. All colic begins with mild pain and subtle symptoms; however, those signs may be the early stages of a life-threatening situation and have dire consequences. Signs of colic in the horse vary, but can include not eating, yawning, restlessness, groaning, repeatedly curling the upper lip, looking at flank, continuous or intermittent pawing, circling, backing into corner or post, standing in a stretched position, lying down repeatedly rolling, and sweating excessively. Get your horse to the vet as quickly as possible. If it is a case of mild colic, the horse may be sent home in a few hours. If the colic is severe, expect days--and in the case of surgery-weeks. The important thing to realize is if colic may be the culprit, immediate action is necessary. Time is of the essence when a horse is colicky. Immediate medical attention

is an absolute must. Here are a few simple guidelines while you wait for the veterinarian to come to you or as you prepare for your trip to the vet hospital. First, do not allow the horse to have access to hay or grain. Although interest in feed is a good sign, it could increase the severity of colic symptoms. Second, be prepared to provide your veterinarian as much information as possible such as clinical signs (pawing, sweating, rolling, etc) rectal temperature (normal between 98 - 101.0), heart rate (normal between 30-44 beats per minute) and the horse’s gum color (normally pink). Third, keep the horse comfortable. If the horse lies down and stays down quietly, even in an unusual position, leave him alone. If he wants to get up and change positions periodically and then lie down again, leave him alone. If he constantly gets up and down and tries to roll frequently, walk him around. If the horse seems comfortable with occasional walking, then continue. Be cautious of long-term or fast-paced walking, as it can actually tire the horse out and cause dehydration. Treatment for colic will vary depending on how long it has been going on, severity of clinical signs, vitals, and area of GI impaction.

Intravenous fluids (IV) may be administered at a very high rate and volume, as well as using mineral oil and water passed through a nasogastric (NG) tube to get it into the stomach. Pain medications and GI stimulants may be administered to offer comfort in addition to helping the GI move the obstructed matter. In some cases, emergency surgery may be the only option. There are a few things the horse owner can do to reduce the risk of colic. 1) ensure horses always have access to fresh water; 2) feed good quality hay and grain; 3) be cautious when deworming with a routine regimen instead of according to the Fecal Egg Count (FEC), and never deworm using an Ivermectin product without an FEC being performed; 4) offer salt/mineral block to help increase water intake. In conclusion, being observant of your horse’s normal behavior, stool consistency, eating habits, and demeanor will help to quickly alert you to subtle changes that may require medical attention.

May your heart and home be filled with all of the joys the season brings. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

From the Mouths of Babes... I was showing my husband my new coat when my 4 year old walked in and said, “I like your coat mama, it looks like a rug.”

When I told our three year old we couldn’t got out again she asked if it was because of the corona pirates.

When our son, who has two white parents, was a toddler, I was giving him a bath during the summer and commented on how tan he was getting. He said, “Yeah, I know. When I grow up, I think I’m gonna be black like my friend Isaac.”

My six year old was watching me pour Draino down his bathroom sink. 6 year old: What’s that? Me: It dissolves whatever gunk is clogging up your drain. 6 year old: Cool! Even the screwdriver down there? Me: The wha…?

My 3 year old calls Flonase “mommy’s special nose medicine” and now my neighbor thinks I do cocaine.

Wildlife Wonders FACT OR FICTION? By Cheryl Conley Sometimes we hear things, and we just assume they’re correct. When we hear them as children, we can go through our entire lives believing them. We even pass that information on to our own children. Let’s dispel some of those old wives’ tales or myths we’ve heard about animals. • The #1 myth I hear is you should never touch a baby bird, because you’ll leave your scent on them and mama bird will reject them. NOT TRUE. It’s never good to touch baby birds at any time unless you are rescuing the bird. If this is the case, the baby should be taken to a wildlife organization. • You can get warts if you touch a toad. NOT TRUE. Toads don’t have warts, so passing them to a human would be impossible. Toads have little glands covering their bodies that look like warts. They secrete a foul tasting, toxic, antibiotic fluid that protects them from predators and illnesses.

•

Ostriches bury their heads in the sand because they believe if they can’t see you, you can’t see them. People say it’s a defense mechanism. NOT TRUE. Ostriches don’t stick their heads in the sand. How would they breathe?

• Use tomato juice if you get sprayed by a skunk. It will remove the odor. NOT TRUE. Anyone who has ever tried this found out very quickly that it doesn’t work. There are options available that will work, but tomato juice isn’t one of them. • You can only be stung by a bee once, and then it dies. NOT TRUE. Let me clarify. This is true for honeybees, but honeybees make up a very small percentage of all bee species. All other bee species can sting you over and over. Ouch!

• Have you ever seen a picture of an opossum hanging upside down by the tail? In real life, this is NOT TRUE. Their tails are very important and aid in balance and holding on to things but they do not hang by them.

• Rabbits LOVE carrots. NOT TRUE. Sure, they’ll eat them…but if given a choice, rabbits prefer leafy vegies. Sure, Bugs Bunny is always seen eating a carrot (and perhaps that is how this myth got started) but in reality, carrots are not a favorite.

• Touching a butterfly’s wings will cause it to die. NOT TRUE. Butterflies look delicate, but they’re actually tough little creatures. Their wings have thousands of scales on them, and losing a few here and there may slow them down and make it a little harder to fly, but it doesn’t kill them. Afterall, they do have to withstand wind, storms, brushing up against plants and bushes, and spiderwebs. Please don’t touch them, though. If they lose too many scales, they can die.

• The age of a ladybug can be determined by counting the black spots on the wings. Others think the number of black spots indicate how many months will pass before meeting their true love. NOT TRUE. Entomologists believe the black spots are a warning to other creatures that the ladybug tastes bad. Don’t eat me or you’ll be sorry!

• Animals have thicker coats in the fall if a severe winter is expected. NOT TRUE. The rate of hair growth and thickness has nothing to do with weather.

Next time you hear something about animals that seems a little far-fetched, it’s probably inaccurate. Research it. Learn about the animals we share our world with.

• Bats are blind. Have you ever heard or used the phrase, “blind as a bat”? NOT TRUE. Bats are not blind. ‘Nuf said.

Babcock was a New Yorker who served as a lieutenant for the Union Army in the Civil War, but then ended up in Paris, Texas. He was a furniture and casket maker with a factory and downtown store. His store doubled as the town Opera House, with a 1200 seat theater on the second floor.

Known for his sense of humor, Babcock did something unusual before his death in 1881. Health Matters www.drjimshealthtips.com By James W. Jones, MD, PhD, MHA

Life is a Song and Dance, if You Enhance Your Circumstance Even the most cultured among us often do not know precisely what constitutes their reality, because we often misguidedly consider it simply as a backdrop in which we live. Your environment in the global sense includes your surroundings, all the people in direct contact, aggregate societal happenings, and how you think about these aspects. Your reality is what you make it to be. Evaluate and Act. Consider the total of your reality and how it enchantingly morphed into your present. Briefly detail the enhancements that added to your present-day province, then reflect on impediments and how you overcame them. It will bring a smile and might make you feel like dancing. If so go ahead, DANCE! Place some humor in your life, and your life will brighten up. After all as the song “Dance in the Rain” exuberantly instructs, “Life isn’t about frightfully waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.” Dance! A very close friend experienced hard times, yet always seemed to keep on top of it all. When things went south, he would vehemently shrug his shoulders, loudly say, “This too will pass,” and go on with his life.

As my wonderful Grandmother Nichols advised wh e n troubles burdened, “Just adjust your attitude.” I adjusted bummer attitudes the remainder of my life and improved outcomes

considerably. Examine what has really happened (and why) in detail. Carefully choose what you can and should do to deal with the state of affairs. If you can do nothing to improve things, decide whether feeling remorseful will help; if not, stop your internal torment and think of how to avoid similar problems.

Terminate the run-through of habitually appreciating the good things in life most when they are gone. OH NO! That nearly universal distortion cheats the perpetrator out of much satisfaction. Embellish your good fortune by fully appreciating the goods life has bestowed (especially good friends) repeatedly in the present moment. Make each moment count, and you will approach abundant life. Stop and make a gratitude list in your mind, and appreciation will soar as your spirit rejoices. In doing so, think of three happenings in the last 24 hours that were refreshing. Make time to spend with your loved ones and friends and, when around them or

communicating by phone, make them the sole purpose of your attention by avoiding distractions. Be thankful for your plentiful meals, because there are more hungry people in the world than live in North America. Here there are abundant huge grocery stores and nearly countless fast food shops waiting for hungry people in the USA. Express your affection by noticing the good things and delightfully complimenting others when deserved. Dispense appropriate hugs. Appreciate good friends willingly, but especially let loved ones know you care. Make “Thank you” one of the most frequent phrases from your mouth. Make your life gratifying by knowing what your most satisfying activities are and repeating them often. December 2021  |  Postcards Magazine: Piney Woods Edition 97

Mustard Seed Moments by Linda W. Perkins

A Light in the Darkness Every Christmas Eve, my family heads over to church to celebrate the birth of Jesus. It is a special time. The best moment of all is when they turn all the lights off; then, as one candle is lit, and then passed on, the room begins to glow. It is beautiful, and it reminds us of how far God’s love can go as it is passed from person to person. Jesus truly is the light of the world! As special as this candle lighting ceremony is, it is so easy to forget during the rest of the year. How often do we really think about how powerful God’s light is? It is not small and fragile like a candlewick that can easily be snuffed out. No, it is more like the sun, which has enough power and reach to illuminate planets hundreds of millions of miles away. When I was camping recently, I was struck at just how important light is to our lives. Sitting in our tent, in pitch-black darkness, I could hear packs of coyotes yipping and howling. At times they seemed far away, but other times, they sounded way too close for comfort. The bathhouse was a five-minute walk down a wooded trail, but I was not prepared to venture out into the darkness, unsure of what dangers might be lurking there. My husband was more prepared than I. He wasn’t relying on a tiny

cellphone flashlight. He had a more powerful torch that cut through the darkness, illuminating the path ahead. With him – and his light – at my side, I had nothing to fear. The dangers were not as close as I thought they were, and as long as we could see, we were empowered to defend against any foes we might encounter. Too often in life, we are blinded by the darkness of the world. We allow ourselves to be sucked into the abyss of fear and trepidation, temptation and sin. When we remember God is by our side, we can tap into His light. He illuminates our path, giving us peace; and in His light, our unseen enemies flee. When we lean into God’s light, darkness loses its power, and we can clearly see the path God has laid out for our lives.

“You, Lord, are my lamp; the Lord turns my darkness into light.” – 2 Samuel 22:29 “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” – Psalm 119:105 “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” – John 8:12
