Publisher’s Post Karen Altom publisher@postcardslive.com

Your Local Community Magazine!

I’m Just a Busy – Body! “Busy, busy, busy!” My first memory of that phrase was from one of my all-time favorite childhood shows, Frosty the Snowman. I can still see and hear the evil little magician Professor Hinkle saying, “Busy, busy, busy!” in his high-pitched, nasal voice as he ran off to get busy writing that he was sorry “one hundred zillion times” so Santa would pay him a visit. I loved that movie so much because the little girl who helped Frosty was named Karen. (Apparently she is now old and asks to speak to the manager a lot, but that is for another column!) This last month seems to have been nothing but busy, busy, busy…even down to the moment a few days ago when someone asked me how to spell busyness! Our magazine designer is acting a little bit like Santa and telling me I will not get to look at pages unless I get this column to her so, like Professor Hinkle, I had to get busy, busy, busy writing since we are supposed to go to press tomorrow! A friend I spoke to earlier in the day said something to the effect of “you better slow down, because life is too short to be so busy.” I know there is truth in that…I really do…(seriously Mom, I do), but when I look at the things my “busyness” includes, it’s really all about people I love and those I love doing life with. Now granted, the parts of the past few weeks that have included ER and doctor visits because hubby fell at work and broke his elbow are not on my favorites list. Neither is watching your child recover from a painful major surgery, but what a blessing to get to be with family when you’re needed. What a blessing to have so much work to do when you return because there are many looking for work. What a blessing to live in a community where you can volunteer for non-profit groups who serve others. What a blessing to have a church family you can rely on and who loves you! I am not superwoman. I do get tired, and one of these days, I may write to you while visiting a friend in Alaska or South Carolina. What a blessing to have those friends! What a blessing this busy, busy, busy life is. Yes, I know life can be hard. Sometimes the busyness thrust upon us would never be of our choosing – like the medical issues I mentioned previously--but even moments like those can bring a blessing if you look for it. As busy as life can be, I will take that busyness any day over the boredom of sitting in a chair watching the “boob tube,” as my grandparents called the television. Those days may someday come… but until they do, you’ll likely find me busy, busy, busy…if you can find me at all!

Until next time,

~

Karen

Dear Gabby Welcome back to the Dear Gabby advice column. Happy Father’s Day to you Dads out there! It’s finally summer, and most people look forward to traveling, camping, or swimming. I haven’t been swimming in years. I heard Dud tell a buddy that he would like to drown his troubles, but he couldn’t get me to go swimming! They thought it was very funny, but I’m not taking any chances. He once handed me a glue stick instead of chap stick! I didn’t talk to him for days. Drop me a line at Dear Gabby at PostcardsLive.com if you have any similar or dissimilar issues. But do as I say, not as I do.

DEAR BB According to the all-knowing Internet, you have two parts of the brain, “left” and “right.” If you’re mostly analytical and methodical in your thinking, you’re said to be left-brained. If you tend to be more creative or artistic, you’re thought to be right-brained. This theory is based on the fact the brain’s two hemispheres function differently. In my case: on the left side, there’s nothing right and on the right side, there’s nothing left.

GABBY DEAR GABBY How do you know if you’re left-brained or right-brained? My girlfriend called me left-brained and I didn’t know if it was a compliment or an insult. Should I be mad or glad? BRIAN’S BRAIN

CONFIDENTIAL TO “UNBALANCED”: I have a dog to provide me with unconditional love, but I also have a cat to remind me that I don’t deserve it. That’s an example of balance.

A Special Conversation

I p M c d t m a b c i e

By Mike Yawn Photos by Gina Turner

John Rodak

John Rodak describes himself as an “instructor, illustrator and graphic designer.” Those who know him, however, might simply describe him as an “artist,” a word that reflects the creative approach he brings to all his occupational endeavors. Our conversation with the Houston artist illuminates the influences of his upbringing, his travels, and his wife, Lan-Hsi Nancy Wen.

The Early Years How did you get interested in art? I was drawing from an early age. I didn’t do a lot of art in school, but I did participate in art classes outside of school. By my senior year, I was able to take an art elective, and I also took a drawing class in Cleveland. So, I would go there once a week to do art. Perhaps more than anything it provided me with the discipline and focus to succeed.

art. Interestingly, my final semester in college, I needed three more hours—completely unrestricted hours—just to be a full-time student. The department chair allowed me to create my own curriculum, and that was great. I tried art with dots—pointillism— and I still have two of my drawings from that time, believe it or not. But it was great to try something different, and it stuck.

How did college influence your art?

Were you influenced by Georges Seurat or Paul Signac or any of the other notable pointillists?

I went to the University of Cincinnati, where I studied art education, so I was able to pursue

I was doing art at the age of five, but I wasn’t studying a lot of formal art history. I was

drawn to the illustrated comic books, guys like Joe Kubert, Russ Heath, and Jim Steranko.

Some people distinguish between illustrators and artists. Is that a distinction you make? No, to me they are both groups of artists. It’s just a matter of how the artists choose to channel their energies and talents. Back then, illustrators used a tape that was known as ZipA-Tone, and it was a gradation of dots. Using it could be expensive, and I thought there might be cheaper ways to do it. For me, that way was to draw the dots—to incorporate a pointillist technique into the illustration.

Most pointillists are known for their vivid, even artificial color schemes.

or painting. I tried to help them get to the next level.

I prefer black and white. To me, it’s a particularly sincere way to approach art. Many forms of painting are forgiving. You can cover up a lot of mistakes with layers, and I don’t think that’s as true for pointillism. I was taught to take a perfectionist approach. If I made an error on an illustration, I threw it away and began again. This combination of black and white and pointillism was a good combination for me, and it’s what I prefer. It is a unique way of capturing the image that exists in my mind.

You are also doing commercial work at this time? Yes. I was also performing music in various venues, and sometimes I would do art for those venues.

This led to a big commission. It did. I would sell art to bars or other venues where I played my music, and it caught the eye of a notable Cincinnatian--Kenny Anderson, the All-Pro quarterback of the Cincinnati Bengals. He called me, and I didn’t believe it was him; I actually hung up on him twice, thinking it was a friend of mine playing a prank. I did a commission for him. It was as large as the piece could be in those days, and it’s him in action taking the snap. He gave it to his parents as a gift for helping him go to school and encouraging him in his athletic pursuits.

against farming, turning against a tradition that was central to the state’s history. I thought, “perhaps we can help people be aware of farming and its history through art.” I spent a couple of years photographing Ohio barns, and then doing black and white drawings of them. I wasn’t completely satisfied with the straight-lined drawings. It didn’t capture the eye. That’s when I began doing more pointillism. In fact, I did 18 pieces featuring barns, helping people become more aware of the barns as structures, and their role in farming.

What other commercial work were you doing? I would get freelance illustration work and other jobs. Around 1983 or 1984, I began doing commercial design. I had a talent for writing, and this put me ahead of some other artists or studios. I was able to get work because I could do the work and the writing.

Many of your pieces seem to rely on framing as a composition device. In “Mail Pouch (Southeast),” for example, the barn side serves as a frame within the painting frame. Is that a conscious device? No. I work from what I like, and it’s not driven by a conscious process. Interestingly, when I did the barn exhibits across Ohio, the state was celebrating its 200th anniversary, and they hired a painter to paint the Celebration Logo on the side of one barn in each of the state’s 88 counties.

Working in Art Rodak began teaching in 1972, working in Cincinnati public schools until 1995, when he moved to Houston. He taught in Houston until 2012. Throughout this period and beyond, he also taught private classes, while also pursuing art commercially.

Tell us about your teaching. I taught for decades, really until COVID put a pause to that. But I taught for four decades in public schools, and I’ve taught private classes, and I taught everything. This is especially true in the private classes, where you might have 15-20 kids in the class, ranging from sixyear-olds to high-school age. They are doing different work, different styles, and they have different abilities. I focused on the individuals’ strengths, whether it be in ceramics, drawing,

There are diverse subjects in this exhibit, but a few of them come from work you did in the 1990s featuring Ohio scenes. Tell us about those. In 1990s Ohio, you had people turning

Who is the handsome guy embedded in this drawing, “House with No Name”? That’s me. I figured it was about time for me to do me on a building.

There are many works featuring barns and other rural scenes, but there are also many pieces with Asian settings. Does this have anything to do with your wife, Nancy? Absolutely. She is from Taiwan, and her mother and father are from mainland China. Her parents were targeted by the Communists, so they fled the country in 1949. Nancy and I have had the chance to travel over there, and we began taking a lot of photographs. You’ll see works featuring China, Taiwan, and Cambodia.

There are also many pieces with statuary as subjects. Yes, mostly from cemeteries. I am a midwestern boy. Give me a car, and I’m gone. Nancy tells me which direction to go, and we head out. For day trips, we might go to cemeteries and find interesting statues. They make for interesting subjects.

Technically, architectural works are sculptures, threedimensional art, just as statues are. Are you attracted to these subjects because of their structural or sculptural elements? I think so, yes. In some cases, it is a combination of the landscape and the structure—or, how the landscape is taking over the structure.

How long does it take you to do a piece? When I began doing pointillism seriously, it would take about 40 hours. Now, I do the pieces in about 20-30 hours. I ask Nancy which of John’s works is her favorite. She indicates that, among others, she enjoys the pieces featuring canals. “Sometimes, it’s the artwork and the memories it conveys to me personally. It evokes our travels to those places and the good times we had while there.”

John and Nancy met, appropriately, at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. He approached her and said, “You have a pretty face. It would be a good subject for drawing.” Despite this questionable opening, she agreed to have dinner with him. That was in 2002, and they have been happily married since 2009.

When do you travel? My son David is grown, and I am retired from public-school teaching, so I have the flexibility in my schedule to travel—which means, we travel when Nancy has the time to travel. She works for IT at the Texas Children’s Hospital.

Do your artistic preferences dictate your travel locations? No. We go where we want, and we can always find places worthy of a good drawing. We’ve been to 40-45 states and about a dozen countries—several countries in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

Pursuit of Happiness As we approach Independence Day, I often reflect on what it took for 56 men to sign the original Declaration of Independence. As they signed that document, they were vividly aware of the consequences of their actions – they were committing treason. An offense punishable by death, and yet they signed anyway. They risked everything to create the greatest country on this planet. A place that has provided countless opportunities to anyone willing to work hard for what they want. I wonder what they would think of what America has become today. I took some time to read the declaration again recently. It always strikes me that they only named three “unalienable Rights”. Those three are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. There are a lot of things that many of us consider “Rights” today, that never found their way into the Declaration, or the Constitution, or the Bill of Rights. Yet, we think somehow it is a Right. I am not going to preach on my beliefs, or what I think our Rights are, but instead talk about just one that was named in the Declaration of Independence. The right to Pursue Happiness.

Lagniappe: A Little Extra Has your style changed over time? Somewhat. A former student of mine indicated as much, pointing out that my “dots are different now than before; they have a different texture.” I use different pens now, and these pens give me a little more flexibility with the dots. It’s made a slight difference in the look of my works.

With pointillism, you use pens with different tip sizes? Yes, the pen tips are measured in millimeters, ranging between 3 and 8. I typically use between a 3 or 4, but I will sometimes use up to an 8.

Do you work photographs?

from

your

own

Yes. I use color photos, and I mentally imagine it as black and white. I think using a black and white photo would be a bit like cheating.

Why would I single out that one? Easy – it is what we do every day. Financial Planning and Investment Management is our business. But really, we are just trying to help our client pursue happiness. Happiness for them may mean more time with family or grandchildren, more time traveling, or simply reading a good book. This business is less about the money and more about the freedom money affords. If you have the appropriate resources, you can do what makes you happy. Planning well could help you have the resources to do so. Money is just a tool. The challenge is using it wisely. So, what makes you happy? You have every right to pursue it. The first step is to understand it takes work and commitment to pursue happiness. It will not come easy, but most things worthwhile don’t. It does not have to take a lot of money, but it will take planning. When you are ready to create a plan that allows you to pursue happiness we would be honored to help. It’s what we do. Global Financial Partners wishes you and your family a safe and Happy Independence Day. Take a few minutes between the friends, BBQ, and fireworks to be grateful for what 56 men did for this country almost 250 years ago.

The colors of summer The summer garden is always my favorite. As gardeners, we create this special space, filled with fragrance, colorful blooms, and serenity as our sanctuary. It is where we relax, entertain, and as “southerners” spend most of our time in the evenings. The summer garden can be a riot of vivid colors in a cottage themed array of blooms or soft textures and muted tones to accentuate garden statuary. Whichever design you choose, the following list of Texas summer hardy annuals and perennials will assist in helping choose. Of course, these are just a few of your choices.

From the Mouths of Babes...

Mark Peters, D.D.S. Dentistry With Excellence!

During a lesson about adjectives, my friend, an elementary school teacher, asked her class to describe their mothers. One boy described his mother’s hair as auburn. Impressed by his sophisticated word choice, my friend asked, “How do you know her hair color is auburn?” Her student replied, “Because that’s what it says on the box.”

My three-year-old daughter stuck out her hand and said, “Look at the fly I killed, Mommy.” Since she was eating a juicy pickle at the time, I thrust her contaminated hands under the faucet and washed them with antibacterial soap. After sitting her down to finish her pickle, I asked, with a touch of awe, “How did you kill that fly all by yourself?”

A WIN-WIN SITUATION!!

My goal for my patients is to help them to “win the game” – in other words, to keep their teeth as long as they need them. My recommendations are not based on “How much dentistry can I do for my patients”? They are based on “How can I help this patient ‘win the game’ with the least amount of dentistry to predictably get there”? Thankfully, I have been blessed to be able to do a level of dentistry which few in my profession have been able to do. I have been blessed again with talent to do this level of restorative excellence and the benefits for my patients have been very gratifying for them, my staff, and me.

Battleship Texas:

An Update

When the “Mighty T” was retired in 1948 with plans to become a museum ship, the Texas Legislature established the Battleship Texas Commission to care for the ship. The commission fundraised to cover the $225,000 cost of towing the vessel from Baltimore to San Jacinto State Park, but ultimately found their funding was not up to the task of maintaining the ship. Disrepair set in. By the late 1960s, the wooden deck had rotted and was replaced with concrete (which eventually cracked and leaked). In 1971, the Brown Foundation, the Moody Foundation, and the Houston Endowment contributed $50,000 to sandblast and paint the hull. In 1983, the legislature turned control of the ship over to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and abolished the commission. After extensive survey and assessment, a plan was formed for dry dock and repairs, and $15 million was raised in a five-year fundraising campaign. The ship was towed to Galveston and repaired during 1988-1990. TPWD adopted a master plan in 2004 that called for more permanent repair and restoration. In 2007, Texas voters approved $25 million in funding for the project, to be supplemented with $4 million by the Battleship TEXAS Foundation (BTF), a nonprofit support organization. TPWD has spent over $54 million maintaining and repairing the ship since 2009. This included critical repairs to engine rooms and adding an emergency generator, additional pumps, and fuel storage to help counter leaks. The legislature passed a bill in 2019 providing $35 million to tow the battleship and repair

it at a dry dock. The ship also closed to the public that year, and the BTF and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department entered a 99-year memorandum of understanding/lease (MOU) whereby the BTF would operate and maintain the Battleship TEXAS for TPWD and the State of Texas. Here’s an update on the restoration process. In spring of 2020, BTF staff removed the ship’s ten 3”/50 caliber guns, eight of ten quad 40 mm Bofors mounts, and all eight 20 mm Oerlikon guns with the assistance of Taylor

Marine and Certified Pipe Services Houston. The guns were taken to an offsite warehouse provided by NRG, where staff and volunteers have been able to restore these guns on a component level. The equipment and services were made available by many generous supporters, such as NRG, CPS Houston, Texas Bearing Services, Taylor Marine, and many others. Volunteers worked over 860 hours on this project in 2020 and efforts continue! Steady progress has been made on the 3”/50 AA guns. Four guns are now ready and in the process of reassembly. Two of these guns are

having their breech blocks reassembled and placed correctly into the gun itself. The other two are having their ball bearings replaced. The ship’s bell was removed from the main mast a n d taken to the offsite warehouse last year. Recently, intense efforts have been made to thoroughly conserve the bell and ensure it will last for another 100 years. To this end, OnAim Conservation spent time diligently treating corrosion on the bell and polishing it. They wrapped up their work after applying a protective wax coating to the bell’s exterior. You might say the bell is now looking ship shape! Much assessment of structural integrity, modeling, and simulations have been part of the process to determine if and how the ship can best be towed to dry dock. Valkor (project management and engineering team) and Resolve Marine have been working on tow prep for the ship. Simply put, they have been filling the blister tanks (the tanks that are on the outside of the ship and have been a constant source of flooding) and some select interior tanks with closed-cell foam. As simple as that sounds, it is not very simple or quick. Prior to each tank being foamed, it has to have

»

as much water and mud pumped out of it as possible (to maximize the volume of foam and minimize the water volume). Then tanks have plastic sheeting draped over any standing water and on areas to prevent the foam from sticking, and finally the foam is sprayed in. The foam has been used widely in the maritime world because it has the advantages of being buoyant, displacing volume, will give some

structural strength back to the tanks, and is removable and less damaging to the ship. The foam will be removed in the shipyard (highpressure water removes it very well). A single trial tank was filled first and evaluated after one month to ensure the process was efficient and would work as planned. The overall process involves upwards of 900,000 gallons of expanded foam in as many as 47 tanks. These efforts have reduced hull leakage from 2,000 gallons per minute to less than 5 gallons per minute. One of the conditions of state funding for the repairs was that, once the ship is removed from San Jacinto, it does not return, but is relocated somewhere it can generate more revenue with an increased number of visitors to offset operations and upkeep costs. Several cities submitted proposals to be the new home of the Texas, and no final decision has been announced. The foundation had a study done in 2016 that projected as many as 283,000 visitors and $3 million in annual revenue if the battleship moved to Galveston. Before closing to the public, the battleship typically attracted about 88,000 annual visitors and $1.3 million in revenue at its current location.

Likewise, the repair location is not finalized. Several dry docks in states around the Gulf were in consideration. Discussions have been taking place with a repair facility in Galveston, but an agreement hasn’t been finalized yet. There is no projected date for the re-opening of the Texas Museum yet, but soon YOU will be able to see the ship’s bell (and more) in person. The Lone Star Flight Museum in Galveston has graciously offered to host a Battleship Texas exhibit in their Warbird Ready Room. To learn more, donate, or volunteer for this worthwhile effort, visit https://battleshiptexas. org/ or follow the BTF Facebook page. Facts about USS Texas (BB-35) Soon after her commissioning, Texas saw action in Mexican waters following the “Tampico Incident” and made numerous sorties into the North Sea during World War I. When the United States formally entered World War II in 1941, Texas escorted war convoys across the Atlantic and later shelled Axis-held beaches for the North African campaign and the Normandy Landings before being transferred to the Pacific Theater late in 1944 to provide naval gunfire support during the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

What our advertisers are saying...

Congratulations

POSTCARDS Magazine

It has been my pleasure to work with Karen Altom and the Postcards team since day one. I have returned year after year, and advertise in both the Piney Woods Edition and the Lake Conroe Edition, for two reasons: first, it produces a great return on investment and is a quality product. Second, they provide a topnotch, professional staff dedicated to helping my business be as successful as possible. When 10% of new customers let us know they came to visit as a direct result of our ad, the ad has paid for itself and we have increased our customer base! (investment/not an expense)…..win/win for everyone! Kim Bius, Owner Kim’s Home & Garden Center

Vet Connect: By Steve VanWagner, D.V.M.

Weight Loss In Horses Whenever we think about changes in body weight, there is a specific thought process used to identify the reasons for it. This approach is based on an understanding of the balance between a given horse’s energy intake and energy output. Weight loss results from an imbalance between caloric intake and expenditure of energy. Factors that affect either or both intake and outflow will change the balance and affects a horse’s weight. If there is more energy expenditure than caloric intake, then a horse will lose weight. To determine whether a horse is underweight or not, it is first important to know what their optimal weight should be. This is a very subjective assessment. The closest we can come to making an objective judgment is through an established Body Condition Score System, which rates horses on a scale of 1-9. On this scale, 1 is emaciated and 9 is obese. Body condition scores of 5 to 6 are considered optimal. This system is based on assessment of the muscle and fat that cover the bony landmarks of the body, especially of the top-line and ribs. Healthy body systems and metabolism result in the nutrients in the bloodstream being processed, with the necessary energy used and the

remainder put into body stores in the form of complex sugars, muscle, and fat. Anything that decreases nutritional intake, with all else being equal, will result in weight loss. Therefore, the most common reasons for weight loss in horses are: • Inadequate feed intake or feed quality mismatched to nutritional needs. • Inadequate processing of feed resulting from dental problems. • Parasite infestation. Parasites compete for nutrition and cause damage to the intestinal tract, which decreases absorption of nutrients. • Aside from dental abnormalities, older horses simply have more difficulty assimilating nutrients from their intestinal tract. For that reason, they require more easily digestible and absorbable feeds. • Disease- Sick animals lose weight because energy is needed to heal or fight infection; this is often made worse because they tend not to eat as much. • Animals that are in chronic pain also lose weight. Tumors are a common cause of weight loss in older horses. Many tumors secrete substances that directly cause weight loss by breaking down body stores of energy. When designing a feeding program, keep in mind the basic metabolic differences among breeds and individuals. A young Thoroughbred racehorse will be a much “harder keeper” than a 10-year-old Pony gelding. Breeding stallions, late-term pregnant mares, and lactating mares are all fed to account for their additional energy expenditures. Within breeds, certain individuals will be harder keepers than others. The basis of most equine feeding programs is good quality forage or hay. Many idle horses without special needs maintain healthy weight on grass hay alone. Make sure all horses are on an appropriate parasite control program, and keep them all in good dental health. It is always best to work with your veterinarian to identify and treat underlying health problems causing weight loss.

Trippin’ Story by Gina Turner Photos by Gina Turner

So, a funny thing happened on the road to fun… Early one February afternoon, my BFF Wendy and I met for lunch, as we do quite often. After the normal catching up about the family and kids, we started thinking how badly we needed to escape; so, a fun road trip plan was hatched. After a rough 2020 and no travel for anyone, we wanted not just any trip, but one we could drive to--no flights, no rental cars, just two girls and the open road. Sounds like trouble, doesn’t it? Thelma and Louise? No, more like Ozzy and Sharon. We decided we were willing to risk it, so after a little research on a much-needed getaway, our plans came to fruition. A ski trip was born, with Taos, New Mexico as the winning destination. We were very excited about the outing. Our reservations were made, and hubbies were informed (yes, in that order.) We knew they wouldn’t say no. It is a perfect distance from home--only 13-½ hours by car. So, we loaded up and set off on our adventure. The road had no idea what was in store for it.

(Using Ozzy voice) Wennnnnnnnnnnddddddyyyyyyy, All aboard, hahahahahahahahaha.

The English name Taos derives from the native Taos language meaning “(place of) red willows.” Taos is located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the southernmost subrange of the Rocky Mountains. Taos is home to more than twenty sites on the National Register of Historic Places, including the home of Kit Carson. North of Taos is the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. Roughly 600 ft above the Rio Grande, it is the tenth highest bridge in the United States. The South Boundary trail, east of town, is consistently ranked the best mountain bike trail in New Mexico. Nearby Wheeler Peak, at 13,161 feet, is the highest peak in New Mexico. The Taos area has four ski areas – Taos Ski Valley, Red River ski area, Sipapu ski area and Angel Fire ski area. The Kachina lift at Taos Ski Valley serves the highest elevation of any triple chair in North America, to a peak elevation of 12,481 feet. An ongoing low-frequency noise, audible only to some, is thought to originate somewhere near the town and is consequently sometimes known as the Taos Hum. Those who have heard the Hum usually hear it west of Taos near Tres Orejas. Red River had its beginnings late in the 19th century, when miners were drawn in by gold strikes in the area and trappers sought game. It was named after the perennial stream, Red River, that flows through the town, coming from the northern slopes of Wheeler Peak.

We pride ourselves on our service and go out of our way to make sure our customers’ needs are met. Shortly after Jack and Jaynell opened the store, it became apparent that customers not only enjoyed our service and competitive prices, but also started telling their friends about their experience with Hamm’s Flooring. From there, the word spread and has continued to do so for more than 43 years. Hamm’s is now a third-generation family business and continues to grow. As the industry continues to change and introduce new products to the market, Hamm’s Flooring has remained on the forefront so we can continue to not only service our customers, but also educate them on the product they are looking for. When choosing a professional to help you with any project, you want the best working and watching out for you. You deserve someone that will communicate with you, someone you can relate to, and someone you can trust. The same is true when it comes to your real estate buying or selling needs. It helps to have someone that has ‘been there’ and ‘seen that.’ I learned early in my real estate career that every property, and every person, is different. It helps to have someone with hands-on experience…a real estate professional able to handle all the tasks of your transaction. A colleague who understands this will be your home. One who is watching out for your needs. An associate who performs above “just another transaction.” When everyone knows at least five real estate agents, how do you select yours? Talk to them! Find someone you will enjoy and feel comfortable spending time, energy, and information with, someone you can trust. When it’s time to call upon their experience, who will be there to answer your call? The same agent you met with first or another on that team? It is also crucial to select someone that cares about your needs first. Allow me the opportunity to visit with you about your real estate needs; then share my experience, training, negotiation skills, and see if we are a good fit! If you are selling, let me help you create a custom marketing plan for your home based on location and placement in the marketplace. Our business philosophy is saturated with customer service. Whether selling or buying real estate, I invite you to contact me to find out how my experience and professional resources will work for you. I really will get you HOME! The company originated with Roy Gore, according to owner Paul Lamp, who went to work for Gore in 1982 while still in high school. From its humble beginnings, the company has grown not only in size, but also in its capabilities and service area. The company employs multiple technicians and a dispatcher, and always keeps a technician on 24-hour call. Lamp sometimes fills that role. “I’m not asking my guys to do something I’m not willing to do,” he says.

My name is Debbie Toney, and I am a realtor for Jpar-The Sears Group. I have always had an interest in buying and selling properties, and finally decided it was time to take it to the next level by becoming a licensed real estate agent. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. From meeting new people, and helping them find the perfect home, to making it their own. This could be suggesting a lender, a landscaper, or simply a paint color. My responsibility is getting the best deal for my client, while providing all the little extras. Buying a home is a big decision, and I am here to help every step of the way. June 2021  |  Postcards Magazine: Lake Conroe Edition 37

Business Focus Story by Rosa Coss Photos by Gina Turner

Shannon, D.L., Diann & Don Shiver

Huntsville Pest Control Huntsville Pest Control, located at 1027 B IH 45 South, Suite 7, in Huntsville, Texas, has been locally owned by D.L. Shiver since January 26, 2018. The pest control business is nothing new to D.L., since he grew up working for his parents, Don and Diann Shiver, owners of Shivco Termite & Pest Control in Madisonville. It’s safe to say the pest control business has long been a “family affair,” since the Shivers have been in the business for the past 36 years.

Huntsville Pest Control provides both residential and commercial pest control services and serves Huntsville and the surrounding areas, which include: New Waverly, Willis, Conroe, Montgomery, Riverside, Trinity, Crabbs Prairie, and Shiro. Since their opening, they’ve designed a new logo, bought new equipment, new service trucks, and acquired new office space. “As a young business owner, some people might look at D.L. and think, I don’t know if this kid knows what he’s doing,” said Don, “but he has been around the business since he was 8 or 9 years old. He would ride with me occasionally and was always good with the customers. They really enjoyed talking with him. He is a people person and can talk to people of all ages. He got his apprentice license when he was only 16 and became certified to do applications soon after that. By the time D.L. was 21, he already had years of experience.“ D.L. is a native of Madisonville, and after graduating from high school, he went to Texas A&M to pursue his undergraduate degree with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Leadership and Development with an emphasis in Public Relations, and went on to his masters in Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication. He met his wife Shannon while in graduate school. In fact, they were married by the professor who taught the class where they met. She now teaches in Katy. Coincidentally, Don was also an Ag major at Sam Houston State University when he met his wife Diann, who was also studying to be a teacher. Before retiring, she taught in Madisonville for 29 years. According to D.L., he always knew he wanted to be in the pest control business. He worked closely with Dr. Briers at Texas A&M to get approval to do his internship while working for his dad. It just made sense to apply my knowledge and experience in my graduate studies. With the help of Dr. Briers, he was able to complete his internship at his dad’s pest control business. After graduating from Texas A&M, D.L. told his dad he wanted to work in the family business. They discussed their options and looked at what would be the best way to get the ball rolling. “We’ll think on it and pray on it,” D.L. recalls telling his dad, and literally that night, “I asked God to show me what I was supposed to do if this was meant to happen.”

The very next day, out of the blue, his dad got a call from Russell Mauldin, owner of Huntsville Pest Control at the time, and good friend of the family. He said, “Hey, I’m looking at getting out of the business, and you’re the first ones that came to mind.” Then he asked, “Do you want to buy me out?” “Russell was in our wedding,” said Diann, “and we basically started our businesses around the same time. He was over the Huntsville area, and we were in Madisonville.” “We’ve remained friends throughout the years,” added Don, “so out of respect, we just didn’t play in each other’s backyards.” Don explained that, on occasion, a customer from this area would call him, and he would refer them right back to Russell, and sometimes, Russell would call him with similar circumstances. When Don called D.L. to tell him Russell had called and offered to sell, D.L. wasn’t sure he wanted to work in Huntsville. As an Aggie, he had been considering working in the College Station area, “but I knew this was a good opportunity that I couldn’t pass up,” said D.L.. Once he bought the business and obtained all the required licenses, he wanted the transition from one owner to the other to be as smooth as possible for the customers, or “friends,” as he likes to call them. D.L. started riding with Russell and was introduced to each of them, and gradually got acquainted with his new customers. He wanted to build mutual trusting relationships with his new friends. “Now, almost four years later, it has really been great getting to know everyone,” said D.L. Besides D.L., there are currently 5 other team members working at Huntsville Pest Control: Stephen Craig (SHSU grad), Gordon Plumlee, Bebe Webb, Marty Fraley, and Gilbert Arevalo (grad of A&M Commerce and UT-Arlington). “Gordon is like a double agent, because he has dual licensing, which means he can work for multiple businesses with the same license,” said D.L. “This is helpful when there is a sudden increase in calls. Our guys working in Huntsville can then easily go help out at the Madisonville location when needed.” The pest control industry is a service-oriented business. “What we do is try to control outdoor pest invaders such as: ants, roaches, mosquitos, rats/mice, or wood destroying insects such as termites. We are getting away from calling ourselves ‘exterminators,’ because that is a

misconception,” D.L. stated. “We offer weekly, bi-weekly, bi-monthly, quarterly, or 6-month maintenance. It just depends on the customers’ needs. Most of our customers are on a quarterly plan. This means that we’ll call you around the 90 days to remind you that your house is due for a new treatment, but, if you have problems before then, we’ll come out and take care of the problem before the 90 days are up.” The products used by Huntsville Pest Control are limited residual products, which means by the time the 90 days are up, it has totally dissipated, so it’s time to reapply. The product adheres to the surface when applied. When using termiticide, they dig a trench and treat the soil, because termites come up through the soil. They also have to make sure the weather is cooperating, and the ground is dry and has enough air pockets to allow the termiticide to dissipate into the soil to get the desired results. D.L. stressed that their products are intended to get rid of insects, but as long as it is used correctly and mixed properly, as indicated on the label, it is environmentally friendly and safe to use around humans and pets. “If you are spraying someone’s home, this means you have received the appropriate training and are qualified to do the work, which also means we have total trust in you,” said D.L. “It is very important to be accommodating and mindful that, when customers are letting you into their homes, they are in a sense letting you into their lives. This means there’s a great level of respect and trust we have to earn in order for them to feel safe and comfortable. We believe the customer is always right. I feel fortunate to work with a great team,” said D.L. “We trust one another, and know our customers trust us to go into their homes.” Don added, “I tell people all the time, I wouldn’t send anyone out to your house that I wouldn’t give a key to my house.” Punctuality is just as important, according to D.L. “We pride ourselves on being on time. If we tell you we’re going to be there between 8:30 am and 9:30 am, we will be there! Most of the time we are early, but if we are going to be late for any reason, we’ll call you and let you know. We don’t leave customers wondering where we are.” According to D.L., he goes out to about 60 houses a week, and says once he arrives at the location, he will remember details about

Although he’s always on call, D.L. says he tries to separate his work and personal life as much as possible. Weekends are mostly spent with family and friends. He enjoys spending time with his wife Shannon at home, cooking, or going to the movies. The couple also enjoys traveling and going on cruises, although they haven’t done much of that lately due to COVID. D.L. also enjoys hanging out with his friends, Aggie football, hunting, playing video games, riding around in golf carts in the neighborhood, and taking his dogs to the dog park.

Health Matters www.drjimshealthtips.com By James W. Jones, MD, PhD, MHA

Try Linking Your Thinking to What Will Guarantee You Foresee a Greater Reality In order to be successful in any significant endeavor when a good deal of effort is required, one must think carefully and correctly about the situation before taking action. The thinking should be more carefully done depending on the importance of the outcome. Your health and the wellbeing of your body are of primary importance. Every rational person wants continuing utmost bodily functioning for one’s entire lifespan, but how to maintain that splendid goal’s essence relies on correct thinking about health. In the material world, everything that produces energy or uses energy (or both) wears out. And there are rules about those phenomena that determine the rapidity of the wearing out. Think of your automobile and how much its continued normal functioning depends on your providing adequate maintance and correct driving habits. Your body is the same. Aging is necessarily the greatest cause of functional impairment to health. Aside from infections and sudden injuries, the wearing out of our bodies is so slow as to be imperceptible, but the damage is cumulative day after day. Our cells ever so gradually change. If you have any doubts, take a look at a photo of yourself from long ago. I just did from 50 years ago when I was in the Navy. OMG! Just imagine, if cigarette smoking resulted in lung cancer within a month or even a year, cigarettes would have been blacklisted before becoming popular. Smoking would definitely not have continued for 7,000 years. NO!

We are programed from cave dweller times to stuff ourselves because food was scarce, and to eat as much high caloric foods as we could was survival. Now food is constantly available, but our brain continues to say stuff yourself. Likewise, our tastes tell us to selectively consume fats and sugary foods because they are high in calories; hence cave dwellers who liked fats would have survived better. This preference to eat more than needed and prefer fatty foods has led to over 70 percent of Americans being OVERWEIGHT! Being overweight causes one’s body to produce chemicals that speed up the aging process very gradually and ushers in the diseases of aging--including cancer, heart disease, stroke, and others that disable or cause demise. Tailor your diet to not consume potentially harmful foods; instead, develop a taste for foods containing substances that neutralize the harmful ones produced by your body’s cells. Learn to enjoy fruits (especially the berries) and green leafy veggies. My bride and I have gradually reduced the size of our meals. We almost never finish a restaurant meal. We split it or get a takeout box to go. It sure is nice to cut your eating out expense or enjoy another delicious takeout meal at home! The WHO defines health as ‘Physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease and infirmity’. I want as much of that as I can make happen. AMEN!

When your family experiences a time of need, count on our family to guide and support you in making thoughtful, informed decisions.

Mustard Seed Moments by Linda W. Perkins

Working for the Lord Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. We all know that sound. When we first get the news of a promotion or that assignment we want, it’s the sound of our heart beating with excitement. Yet, in the middle of a tedious project that is seeming to last forever, draining away all of our energy, it is the sound of the clock ticking. Ever. So. Slowly. As my dad used to say, work isn’t always fun--that’s why they call it work. And yet, work is something we all do, whether it’s the work of raising a family, the work of making a living, or both.

Every day, as we go about our business, people are watching. How dedicated are we? Do we have a positive attitude or do we grumble and complain? Do we finish what we start, or do we leave the job half-done? Is our work done right, or is it filled with errors? Do we treat customers and colleagues with kindness and integrity? The Bible says we should work at everything we do as if we were working for the Lord himself. One reason is that when we serve the Lord, we can expect to receive an inheritance from Him as a reward. Another motivator is that in doing our work well, we emulate Jesus in glorifying our Father in heaven. As our character at work reveals Christ to those around us, we become the lights in the world that God intended us to be. Are you working today as if for the Lord? Are you letting your light shine in your workplace? Pray that God will show you how to be an effective witness right where you are.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” – Colossians 3:23-24

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31

“If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.” – 1 Peter 4:11a
