A Big Texas YEEHAW From The Chairman Welcome to the 2018-2019 Portland Chamber of Commerce Magazine & Directory! This new publication layout is presented by the staff of the Portland Chamber of Commerce. Thank you to all the Chamber members who supDaryl Genzer ported this magazine and I am Chairman of the Board sure your investment in your Chamber will abundantly deposit dividends into your business.

Speaking of investment in your Chamber, that is one of our primary focal points for this Chamber year. Your monetary investment is what helps the Chamber operate and provide its membership with a plethora of assistance for your business – from educational forums, to business assistance, legislative issues, marketing ideas and opportunities, peer to peer networking, economic development, online & social media marketing, to community support, events, and so on. The Chamber ensures that these resources are available to our members, working with you for success. The second and perhaps more powerful investment you can make in the Chamber is YOU. Every Chamber luncheon, ribbon cutting, After Hours Business Mixer, fundraiser, legislative rally, or organized Chamber event is YOUR opportunity to grow your brand and business by meeting fellow entrepreneurs and professionals - possibly catapulting your business forward. Supporting one another ensures economic prosperity. Take a moment and think of compounding interest or dividend paying stocks. The return on the investment is small in the beginning, but over time, the initial investment grows tremendously. If you 4 Portland Chamber of Commerce
continue to invest small amounts over time with your initial investment, the growth compounds exponentially and the rewards are much more significant and purposeful. Chamber membership provides those opportunities repeatedly, and by paying it forward to fellow Chamber members and supporting YOUR Chamber of Commerce, success for all is imminent. I would like to add a brief note of special recognition to the City of Portland elected officials and city staff as well as the Gregory Portland ISD school board and staff. Portland is a first class, highly commendable city for both residents and businesses and affords all students a highly accredited education and extra-curricular activities. Portland has always been known to be a family friendly, great school system community. Special thanks to creating that vision and ensuring a commitment to that vision goes to past and present mayors, city council persons, school board officials, City Manager Randy Wright, and GP ISD Superintendent Dr. Paul Clore, and all the members of their teams who make Portland a great community each and every day.

Located just across the bridge from Corpus Christi, Portland keeps visitors in the middle of everything, while still letting them get away from it all. A favorite of watersport enthusiasts, the skies above Portland’s shoreline are usually dotted with colorful kiteboards—a sport the town is well known for, and one of many sea-and-sky adventures it offers. Scenic Sunset Lake Park, a favorite for locals and visitors alike, is located on the edge of Portland, adjacent to the Nueces Bay Causeway (US 181). It features a series of boardwalks through protected wetlands and is one of

the best ways to get close to migrating birds and wildlife on the Texas coast. Fishing, swimming, and kayaking are also popular activities on Sunset Lake. A short distance from Sunset Lake Park’s southern end lies Indian Point Pier, one of the most iconic structures on the Texas coast. The pier, which extends deep into the gulf, is a favorite among fishermen on a year-round basis. It also offers a prime spot for viewing the Corpus Christi skyline and night views of the lights on the Harbor Bridge. The city’s expansive system of trails, many of them hugging the coastline and featuring scenic overlooks, makes Portland a natural for nature and fitness fans. Most of Portland’s hotels are pet friendly, so bringing the family dog along on a coastal vacation is always an option. Portland’s proximity to everything in the bay area makes it a perfect choice as the base for a coastal getaway. Located just eight miles from Corpus Christi, Portland offers quick, easy access to some of the most famous tourist spots in Texas—including the Texas State Aquarium and the USS Lexington Museum. A trip to the ferry at Aransas Pass, and a free ride to North Padre Island, is only 15 minutes away; while Rockport is less than half an hour away.

ack in 2015 when our Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facilities started construction here in the Coastal Bend, we were relatively unknown. Our small group of talented employees had big ideas that would transform the region and ultimately change the global energy landscape. Yet, while we were leading the way and making history for Texas, many in our region did not realize that LNG is simply the liquefied version of natural gas; the same clean, safe energy source used to fuel many of our homes and industries. This valuable resource, in its liquefied state, is reduced to 1/600th of its volume through a sophisticated refrigeration process that cools the gas until

it liquefies. Once converted, LNG is shipped around the world, in fact, since 2016 more than 400 cargoes of LNG originating from Cheniere’s Sabine Pass facility have been delivered to nearly 30 countries. Today, Cheniere is the leading producer of LNG in the
United States. Our employees take great pride in providing clean, secure, and affordable energy to the world, while supporting economic development across our country. We are an active member of this vibrant community, not only as a major employer and economic contributor, but also as an investor of our time, resources, and energy; working to make this region better for all who call it home. We are excited about being your neighbor and are proud to say that as our new facility comes online; hospitals, homes, and businesses around the world will one day flip a switch and turn their lights on thanks to the hard work being done here in the Coastal Bend by our employees.

HISTORY OF PORTLAND Portland was called the "Gem City of the Gulf" and was described as being the most attractive and pleasant spot in Texas. Situated on a beautiful 30 to 40 foot high bluff, it overlooked 150 square miles of dancing waves and fronted the deepest water in Corpus Christi Bay. As a summer and winter resort, Portland was described as being particularly fortunate with her mild climate and prevailing bay breezes. Portland offered a great attraction to sportsmen.
Ducks and other game were abundant, while the bays abounded with redfish, tarpon and other varieties of fish. More fish and oysters were taken from these waters than from any point on the Gulf Coast. This location was the home of the swan, crane, heron, and other water fowl. The New England Land & New England R. E. Company purchased 1,280 acres of land east and northeast of the original 640 acres. Most of the stockholders of these companies resided in Portland, Maine, thus the town was named in honor of their hometown.

experience. Bird watching, nature study, children's play area, as well as food and drinks are available. Some of the best wade fishing and bird watching can be found at Portland's Indian Point Wetlands and Sunset Lake nature trails. Most of all, Portland is a great place to live. With safe, upscale neighborhoods, award-winning schools and excellent city services, Portland is everything you want in a family town. Windfest – an Annual Festival The Portland Chamber of Commerce held its first annual Pioneer Day festival in April 1973. It was called the Portland Pioneer Pageant. In 1974, it was renamed Portland’s Spring Festival. Neither of these celebration names or themes suited the Chamber of Commerce’s idea for a festival. Therefore, in December 1974, the chamber board sponsored a contest to rename the celebration and the theme, Portland Pioneer Days was born. Board members chose the Pioneer Days theme because it would open up overall promotion and offer a wide variety of sub-themes, activities and events. These could easily be programmed into an overall setting. In 1977, Memorial Park became the focal point of the festival and a carnival for the kids was added. In 1991, the Portland Chamber of Commerce sponsored a “New Name” contest for the Portland Pioneer Days. The City of Portland Celebrated its 100th Birthday and in honor of the milestone the Chamber wanted to start the second
hundred years with a name and logo which better described Portland in the 90’s, “Windfest” was the new name selected for the festival. Each year the Portland Board of Directors pours their heart and soul into making Windfest a huge success. It takes countless volunteers to make an event like this happen. In addition to the Board of Directors listed in the front of this publication that work diligently to pull this off each year, Monte McWhorter, McWhorter Electric, donates his time each year to make sure we have the needed electricity. Mark Evetts, Allstate Insurance Company, donates his time to help with the placement of the tents and vendors. Ron Jorgensen, Bay Area Studios, donates his time to make sure all the entertainment is in 26 Portland Chamber of Commerce
the right place at the right time with the help of local resident Tim Stephens, who received the volunteer of the year award for his time and dedication to Windfest 2018. It also takes a lot of great sponsors so we give a GREAT BIG “Thank You” to each of these along with the City of Portland. Without the City's support we could not make this happen. All these wonderful people plus many more are the backbone of this annual event. Last year, there were over 50 vendors with spectacular products, great entertainment and fun activities for the kids. This year Windfest 2019 is scheduled for the 2nd weekend in April and promises to be over the top.
