ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTE Thingamajig Playwrights Festival 2018
W
hen asked to helm the Thingamajig Playwrights Festival, I was ecstatic! Working on a new play with a playwright is my favorite process as a director. I love being a part of the development of a piece, helping a playwright hone and carve their story. It is intense, beautiful and intricate, with each collaboration between playwright and director being vastly different. To also have the ability to bring two playwrights to our beautiful Pagosa Springs town to workshop their pieces with a talented team and incredible community is a thrill. Being immersed in our community and having the gorgeous
views of the town as a scenic backdrop is a great foundation for any artist. Over the length of the festival, we will work together in supporting the playwrights as they find the story they want to be telling. Every playwright needs different things from a development process opportunity. The particular stage the play is in will determine how we, as a theatre community, are able to help them. As the playwright hears, sees, rehearses, reworks, rewrites, cuts, changes, adjusts and moves pieces around, our job is to help the playwrights find their voices. We must stay true to that mission. We have a responsibility to the work and we must honor it. It is an extremely vulnerable process for the playwright. We want their unique story to shine
through from beginning to end, from their brain, to the page, to the stage and, finally, to the audience. We, both the festival team and you as community members, are all pivotal in that. We all get to help the playwrights birth their babies. We are all part of the process that will help and aid the playwrights in getting the stories that is living in them to be clear on the stage. I hope over the length of this festival you, our beloved audience, connect to this important work. I am obsessed with my part in helping to
share a world, to crawl inside their brains, to expose what is in the story. Theatre is all about collaboration; playwright with director, director with designers, director with actors, actors with audience. We need to have everyone involved in this process to make it successful. Theatre isn’t theatre unless it is shared with an audience. All of our participation is critical. How will you help in the telling of these stories? — Melissa Firlit festival artistic director
