We all know change is part of life. Some changes are wonderful. Some, not so great. And some are downright funny.
THE WONDERFUL. Since writing my last column, Wes and I have been blessed with the addition of two more grandsons. Not twins, but almost! Born two weeks apart, Sutton Marshall Altom and Deacon Lanier Boyd made their entrance into this world and expanded this “Sassy’s” heart again. When a friend asked how it felt to go from one grandson to three in just a few days’ time, Wes commented it’s the best return on an investment we’ve seen this year!
THE NOT SO GREAT. Last month, I mentioned the great flood event. What I didn’t mention is the horrible allergic reaction my husband had. Apparently, fiberglass dust settles in the walls, and when baseboards were removed and high-powered fans brought in to dry everything out, we found out how allergic to fiberglass he really is. The joys of the unknown.
THE DOWNRIGHT FUNNY. Like most of you I am guessing, I have a love/ hate relationship with technology. Most days, I really love it. It certainly can make life simpler, and it is very easy to get spoiled. Case in point: ALEXA. I love her. I can tell her to turn on my living room lamps – and turn them off when I’m ready to go to bed. She reminds me to get my clothes out of the dryer. She starts my day by telling me the weather report (very uninteresting as of late), what’s on my calendar for the day, and then plays my favorite music. One of the ways all this works is through an app on my phone. The other day as Wes and I were driving down the freeway, I realized I had said the “A” word in conversation, and the app indicated Alexa was waiting for me to speak. So, I said STOP…which is what you say when you want “A” to stop. However, it is NOT what your husband wants to hear when driving 75 miles an hour down the freeway! His confusion over why I wanted him to stop and my confusion over why he was confused led to a good few minutes of laughter. And as my brother Jon would say, “That right there’s funny, no matter who you are!”

Jack Gunion Twice, Jack Gunion retired. Twice, he discovered that the retirement lifestyle— with nothing more interesting to do than tally his golf score— was not enjoyable for him. So, now 78 years old, Jack continues to do what he has always done: bring out the best in others so retail businesses can thrive. 14

‘Things happen for a reason’ While earning a degree in journalism from Drake University in his hometown of Des Moines, Iowa, Jack worked two jobs to pay his college expenses. By day, he sold men’s clothing; at night he worked in the field of broadcast journalism, first as a television correspondent for an NBC affiliate and later at a radio station. “I had the luxury of working in that field while I was still in school,” he says. “By the time I graduated, I had figured out I didn’t want to do that for the rest of my life.” Jack had always thought he would one day become a lawyer, so he took the LSAT, did well, then scheduled an interview with the dean of Drake University Law School—the final step before admittance. But something unexpected happened: the dean told Jack that first-year law students were not allowed to work. Jack remembers thinking, “That’s a problem.” He could not afford to attend law school unless he worked. His dream of attending law school ended that day, but he does not have regrets. “God gives us direction in our lives. Things happen for a reason,” he says. “Later I went back to graduate school, but not immediately, because I couldn’t afford it.” Jack then reassessed his options. “I interviewed with just about anybody who would talk to me through campus placement,” he says. He was offered five jobs, but only three interested him. All were in different fields, and all offered management training programs. Although the
job with Sears was the lowest paying of the three, it’s the one Jack took. “I figured if I really busted my tail, I could advance quite rapidly,” he says. And he did. He worked for Sears for ten years, living all over the country and becoming a group merchandise manager for Chicago,
been in the retail business since 1959. He has contributed to the opening of more than 850 retail stores. “I will get it right one of these days,” he jokes. Joking aside, Jack is known for being an experienced, successful retailer, and his philosophy of what makes a store successful is simple. “It has all come down to one word,” he says. “Inventory--the right goods, the right place, the right time, the right quantity, and the right price. If you do these things right in retail, you are going to be successful. If you do even one of them wrong, the chances of being successful diminish.”

He ultimately spent 19 years in corporate retailing, working in upper management for companies like Target and County Seat. During scarcely more than three years as vice president of stores for Waldenbooks, he helped the company increase from 600 stores to more than 950. He had found his niche in retail, but he wasn’t finished yet. While Jack was in his late 30s, he’d set a goal--to be at the helm of a large, specialty store chain before he turned 40. Soon he became the president of Genesco’s Retail Group—parent company to several shoe and accessory chains.

People who have been in the same job at a company for twenty years—don’t you think they know more about it than I do?” Jack also enjoyed reading Start with Why by Simon Sinek. He recalls taking over as president at Genesco, “I immediately began to change things, and I didn’t take the time to ask ‘why.’ I didn’t take the time to find out why things were the way they
were before I changed them. It was a mistake. Things don’t happen by accident. There is a reason why companies do things or why people do things or why they make certain decisions along the way. Unless you find out why they did those things, your change or new ‘supposed’

‘Body, mind and spirit’ Jack borrowed the “body, mind and spirit” trio from the YMCA. His first job was cleaning out locker rooms at his local Y so he could go to camp on a scholarship. “I was twelve years old,” he says. “The YMCA was a big part of my life for many, many, many years. I discovered Jesus Christ at the YMCA. For many years, the Y was virtually my church. “I believe in body, mind, and spirit—the three pillars on which the Y was built. I believe those are the pillars of your life. Take care of your body and

downtown Huntsville don’t abuse it. Keep your mind constantly active. The spirit—you believe in the Lord. Your spirit is constantly with you. When I was about 12 or 13, I was one of those kids on the fence that could go either way. I credit the Y for keeping me on the right side of the fence.” To give back, Jack has raised over $35 million for the YMCA over his lifetime.

businesses. His first foray into this enterprise was in 1984, when he co-founded Eye Care Centers of America (now Visionworks). He took the company public before selling it to Sears in 1987. He has acquired and sold several other businesses, including Baskins, which began in Trinity and had multiple locations including Huntsville and Conroe. He spearheaded the store’s transition from a general department store to a western store, growing the chain from 15 to 31 stores before selling it to Boot Barn. During that time, he authored the chain’s motto--Every guest, every store, every day. “A chain has an obligation to deliver a consistent experience because your customers shop more than one of your stores,” he says. “They don’t expect something entirely different when they go from one to another.” Some stores can achieve excellence sometimes, he says, but “every guest, every store, every day is difficult.” Along the way, Jack has developed his own definition of an effective leader. “I have interviewed many potential leaders, vice presidents and above, and surprisingly, the question many of them have stumbled over is ‘give me the definition of leadership.’ To me it’s a very simple answer--a leader is someone who brings out the best in others,” he says. Jack currently travels to Montana one week every month as CEO of Montana Silversmiths, a company he and four other partners purchased in 2016. There, he likes to conduct what he calls “Uncle Jack talks.” “When I go to Montana, I almost always call six or eight people up to the conference room. They have different jobs in the operation—some from the factory, some from the office. I talk to them about what they know and what they would do differently. I tell them, ‘You are now the CEO of this business. What are you going to do differently?’ Some of them stumble with that. Some of them come up with some good ideas.” When he is not acquiring, growing, or selling businesses with Motivity Capital Partners, LLC, Jack enjoys golfing, reading—both novels and books about business—and spending time with his wife Delyce, whom he married in 2012. One day, he says, he might write a book. Jack is also the proud father of a son and a daughter, and is a grandfather of three. Whether he is wearing his business hat or his family hat, however, Jack is the same person. “You can’t be one way personally and another way professionally,” he says. “You are what you are.”

Crape Myrtles – the Queen of Summer Bloomers No plant says Texas summer like a crape myrtle in full bloom. These Texas hardy deciduous shrubs cannot be beat for overall return on a landscape investment--beautiful blooms in the summer, colorful fall foliage, and showy white bark in winter. Crape myrtles are often referred to as trees, but are actually shrubs available in a large range of sizes, from miniatures under 3’ to small trees under 25’. Crape myrtles have simple requirements: sunny location, good air flow, well-drained soil, and water as needed. Powdery mildew often becomes a problem when plants have little chance of air movement in the corner of a building. Crapes love high heat, humidity, tolerate severe drought, and will grow in any Ph level and any soil.

Crapes bloom on new growth wood and have the best show of blooms when the plant is pruned in mid-February. Crapes can be left to grow naturally in a large shrub form, but will not attain the bloom “show” or manicured look unless pruned. Chinch bug season is here, as are spider mites! An application of Turf Ranger every 60 days will keep your lawn chinch bug free, and a granular systemic insecticide such as Bonide Systemic 3n1 will keep your tropicals and patio plants spider mite free. Chinch bugs always attack the hottest, driest area of your lawn and leave tiny black spots (chew marks) on the blades of grass. They move through the yard forming a dry swath of dead grass. The affected areas require treatment. Dead grass will need to be removed for new sod to take over. Increasing irrigation to this area not only helps deter chinch bug attacks, but helps the sod grow quicker to make the damage “disappear.” Spider mites damage is obvious. The plant will have a pale green, dried appearance. The leaf feels “sandy” if you rub it between your fingers (this is actually the microscopic webbing you are feeling). Veronica “Roni” Cabrera-Moreno of the Art Bus
There’s something to be said for kids who color outside the lines. When they grow up, they are the ones who march to the beat of their own drums, who chart paths where others haven’t gone before, and who find creative ways to achieve their dreams, even if that means taking a few detours along the way. In Houston’s Northside neighborhood – and traveling around in a converted school bus that now serves as a mobile art studio and classroom – Veronica “Roni” Cabrera-Moreno is doing just that. Her big dream of serving the community through art is now coming true, thanks to a lot of hard work and a $100,000 grant via the Kelly Clarkson show.

The following year, she transferred to Davis (now called Northside) High School, which serves the neighborhood where Roni grew up. At 16, however, she became pregnant and transferred to a school for pregnant girls.

When Roni’s third son was two months old, her husband fell 37 feet while working at an oil refinery, broke his back, and ended up out of work for five years. The young mother stepped up to the plate and took on the family’s breadwinner role while Norberto was recovering from his injury. She found work in refineries building scaffolding. Her passion for art was still alive, however. “The funny thing is that, even while I was working at the refinery, I found myself decorating hardhats and making art out of what the welders would drop!” she said with a laugh.

Discovering her hidden talent through tough times at a young age Roni wasn’t one of those kids who always knew she was an artist. In fact, she says she got in trouble with the babysitter when she was little for not coloring inside the lines. She began channeling her creativity into practical projects with an aunt who made quilts, but it wasn’t until she was 12 that others began to recognize her drawing and painting abilities. “I was drawing something in honor of my dad, who had passed away, and this kid in class was like, ‘Wow, that’s really cool. Can you draw something for me, too?’ and it went from

can make you that. Oh, my mom can decorate the hallways!’ So that’s what I did for a few years,” she said. Eventually, the PTO president asked Roni to do face painting for the school festival. People began asking her for her phone number,
and suddenly she found herself in business as a professional face painter. “I worked for the zoo and for various entertainers; I began doing body painting and all kinds of stuff. I think that was the moment when I realized, ‘Oh yeah, this is who I am. This is who I put aside to raise my kids. This is who I really am.’ From there, I went from face painting to canvas to art to murals … it just kind of blew up on me!” Roni explained. Meanwhile, she was still doing things with her kids and the other families’ kids. “I started having this idea of, ‘I wish I could set up a tent and do art in the community.’ And I did! I set up tents and had art supplies all laid out there. My church would donate supplies like paper plates or bottles or tissue paper holders, and moms would collect things for me so I could do

art with the kids.” Seeing what Roni was doing for the neighborhood kids inspired the owner of Tequila’s restaurant to jump in with her, offering free lunch tickets to kids who came to paint. “It was really interesting because parents would look at me and ask, ‘What do you want from me?’ They couldn’t believe I was doing this for free,” she said. “Everyone was so happy, and I realized I really had something here; it was something I really enjoyed doing.” Art, kids, and community became a central theme of Roni’s life. She was hired to do art activities for a community development center, she began managing the arts and entertainment for the Northside Festival, and she worked at Vineyard Church as its nursery director, hoping to become its children’s pastor. Simultaneously, she was working for Art in the Boulevard, a local art studio. “Around then a light bulb went off. I was really torn between working for my church and running these camps and classes at the art studio. I realized this demographic (served by Art in the Boulevard) could afford

One day, not long after the pandemic hit, she and her husband were driving down a back street in their neighborhood and noticed two buses for sale parked at someone’s house. Norberto looked at her and said, “Okay, I think we’re ready for your bus.” The next morning, they went to look at the bus, and it wasn’t running.

At some point in my dreams, I was like ‘I want to live in a bus and travel around the U.S. Oh, and I want to get a bus and turn it into a studio!’ and my husband told me, ‘No, honey, you can’t; I’m

Two weeks later, the day they were to pick up the repaired school bus, they went outside and found their car had been stolen. Undeterred, they took an Uber to pick up the bus, and her husband, who had been

The launch of The Art Bus was reminiscent of Roni’s past community events, reflecting her heart for the Northside neighborhood. A food crisis brought on by the pandemic prompted Roni’s friend Monica from The Christina Project to do a food drive, and she asked Roni to bring the Art Bus. Together, they went to Mi Tienda (the Spanish H-E-B), loaded the bus up to the ceiling in food, and drove it over to the local preschool Avance, where food was then distributed to needy families.
As she was working out an arrangement with the building owner, a producer from The Kelly Clarkson Show contacted Roni via her social media pages. She had heard about Roni via a news story on Channel 2 and wanted to pitch the idea to Kelly, who is a Texas native. She asked Roni to make a little video, and within a few weeks, she got a call saying the team was coming to film her three days later.
A month later, another person called and asked if the Art Bus could be used to distribute backpacks at a local apartment complex. She loaded the bus with art supplies, lollipops and backpacks, and her husband came along to make balloon animals for the kids. The event went off without a hitch. “I feel like God sent me this individual to show me we could just go do something without extensive planning. All you have to do is just do it!” Roni exclaimed.
A year after using the Art Bus to serve various neighborhoods around Houston, Roni began to think about how best to serve her own area of town. She found a building on Jensen Drive that was ideal, but without help, it was too much for her.

“They filmed at my house, at my church where I used to work, in front of my mural,” Roni expounded. “This was on a Thursday, and they told me they wanted to fly me out to LA on Monday!” Little did Roni know, when she arrived in Los Angeles, she and her family were there for the filming of the annual Kelly Clarkson Christmas show and her business, HTXArt (which includes the Art Bus as well as Roni’s
face painting and other art ventures), would be awarded a $100,000 grant by Kelly Clarkson, Amy Pohler, and H-E-B. It was just what she needed to fund Art in the HEART, an art center in the heart of a needy neighborhood, which opened on Jensen Drive on May 28.

Gibbs Playhouse
Huntsville, Texas is home to many historical structures, some being lesser known than others. One of these is nestled on the corner of Avenue O and 14th Street. There stands a stone playhouse which was built around 1910. The playhouse had two previous locations, originally on 11th Street, then on a different property on Avenue O, before resting at its current location in 2019. Sandford Gibbs and his wife Sarah Elizabeth, also known as Sallie, had the playhouse built for their first grandchild, Wilbourn Sandford, who later became mayor of Huntsville. Gibbs was a co-founder of Gibbs Brothers

and Company in 1841. The company was a mercantile store which sold necessary items to residents, including General Sam Houston. After his death, Gibbs was survived by his five sons and wife, who took over the family business. Wilbourn Sandford married Peggy and had a daughter, Margaret in 1935, who also played with the house. In the 1950s, when Margaret outgrew the playhouse and Sandford was selling the property, the playhouse moved for the first time when it was further passed down to Gibbs’ great-granddaughter, Mary Laura Gibbs, and her brother. of neighborhood children and even animals have enjoyed the playhouse as well. At one point, the Gibbs family used the playhouse to house a Boxer whose owners could no longer care for the pet. The playhouse remained at this location through various owners until 2019. Then the playhouse was moved for its final time when the owners wanted to change their yard and noticed the historical value in the playhouse. They knew the playhouse could not be destroyed, so they offered the playhouse back to Mary Laura Gibbs, who joyfully accepted it.
Gibbs has lived in her grandparents’ home since 1986. Her grandparents built the house in 1926, and her grandfather’s prized pine trees and grandmother’s magnolias are still growing in the yard and help shade the yard and playhouse. When her grandparents were residing at the home, farm animals, including chickens, a cow, and horses roamed in the yard. The house also functioned as a Sam Houston State University location for a home economics class once Gibbs’ grandfather died and the house was sold. Measuring 6 ft. X 8 ft., the playhouse is made of stone with petrified wood placed sparingly between. Mary Laura Gibbs speculates the stone is
from when the family was building something for Gibbs Brothers and Company, and she believes the stone is local to Huntsville. Grooves were made between the stones and wood to help them stand out. When looking closer, one can see the empty craters from where shells had once been buried in some of the stones. Many stones also contain igneous properties with sponge-like textures. A few pieces of marble were added, some to make the outside windowsills, which Mary Laura Gibbs acquired during the rebuilding of the playhouse from Grand Leader department store, once located on University Avenue. The house was originally built with glass windows and a faux chimney

in the back. It was also made, and continues to have, working electricity. Some of the original design has slightly changed. Cabinets that were built on an inside wall have since been removed. To make a stronger foundation, a concrete slab was added during the playhouse’s second move. A childsize door was also replaced with a regular-size door for easier access. Lastly, in order to better protect the house in the rain, a slate roof was built. Inside, the concrete floors are painted to resemble checkered linoleum. Paneling on the walls are made partly from Parana Pine from Brazil, an endangered wood that has since been banned from exporting. The pine was brought from Mary Laura Gibbs’ parents’ house on Avenue O. A ceiling fan has been added, and a little wooden square table stands in the corner in front of an outlet. On top rests a candle and the remote for the ceiling fan. A mat and pillow rest on the floor for meditation practices.

When moving the first time from 11th Street, the house was moved in one solid structure. However, when moving the second time, the house was disassembled and rebuilt stone-by-stone. Mary Laura Gibbs compares this process to how William Randolph Hearst moved and rebuilt the San Simeon Castle in California, but in a miniscule way. In order for the

house to be moved as such, photographs were taken from every side so the details would remain the same. The stones from each side were then placed on separate pallets and moved to the new location. It was decided to be moved this way because of the shape the house was in. Builders had concluded moving the playhouse in one piece would damage it.

“My brother shot the windows out with a BB gun, the door came loose from the hinges, and the roof got bad,” Gibbs said about the state of the playhouse before the move. The state of the house just shows the many fond memories that were made during all the years of the playhouse’s life. “I can remember being held in my grandmother’s arms and watching them put up the house, and I made a handprint in the steps.” Although those original steps were lost, Gibbs added her handprints again in 2021. With these memories, the house contains emotional attachments as well. “It was a part of our house. I remembered it being involved in things. It was like another room of the house, just not connected,” Gibbs said. Another fond memory Gibbs has of the playhouse is being in girl scouts and becoming interested in batiste fabrics. She used the playhouse for melting wax on a hot plate to dye the fabrics. Looking back, she knows her mother would not be happy about this. Gibbs has continued to take care of and upgrade the playhouse since receiving it. She now plans to add greenery around the base of the house. She also hopes to have a geologist examine the rocks making up the structure to determine the origin and age of them. Currently, she

What’s Cookin’ Zucchini Pasta Ingredients 1 lb rotini pasta
Lemon Tahini Dressing Ingredients
5 small zucchini, sliced
½ lemon, juiced
1/3 cup olive oil
3 Tbs tahini paste
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 Tbs olive oil
1 pinch crushed red pepper flakes
2 Tbs water
1/3 cup chopped fresh parsley
1 clove garlic, roughly chopped
salt and pepper to taste ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
Directions Step 1: Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente. Drain and reserve. Step 2: Fill a medium sauce pan with lightly salted water. Add zucchini and bring to a boil; boil for 10 minutes or until tender.
½ tsp salt ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper
Directions Step 1: Combine lemon juice, tahini, olive oil, water, garlic, salt, and pepper in a mini food processor or blender; process until pureed and smooth. Step 2: If dressing is too thick, add 1 teaspoon water and blend to thin. Continue adding water by the teaspoon until you reach your desired consistency.
Step 3: In a large skillet, saute garlic in oil and hot pepper flakes. Add drained zucchini and parsley, then mix all together and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes. Toss with pasta; add cheese, salt and pepper to taste, and serve. Chef’s Notes: This also may be whisked by hand. Store in a jar in the refrigerator.

Directions Step 1: Preheat an air fryer to 400 degrees for 7 minutes. Step 2: Meanwhile stand corn cobs on the end, and with a sharp knife cut each ear down the middle. Place corn cob halves flat on a cutting board and cut in half lengthwise (you will get a total of 4 ‘ribs’ per ear of corn). Step 3: Spray each corn rib with non-stick spray. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of seasoning over the 16 corn ribs. Step 4: Air fry corn ribs in batches for 12 minutes. Remove from air fryer. Step 5: Drizzle crema con sal over corn ‘ribs’ and sprinkle with cotija cheese and remaining seasoning. Garnish with chopped cilantro.

Refreshing Watermelon Lemonade Slush Directions
Ingredients 1 cup cubed seeded watermelon
Step 1: Blend soy sauce, olive oil, brown sugar, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, hot sauce, basil, parsley, red pepper flakes, and black pepper in a blender until smooth.

Step 2: Pour marinade over meat. Cover and refrigerate for 3 to 8 hours. Cook meat as desired.

Directions Step 1: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat; add 1/2 of the ground beef with a big pinch of salt and pepper and cook until the beef is seared and crumbly, about 5 minutes. Remove beef from the pan and cook the remainder. Set all meat aside. Step 2: Lower the heat to medium-low and add 1 tablespoon olive oil and the onion. Saute until aromatic, about 2 minutes. Add tomato paste and oregano, followed by the ground beef and one jar of sauce. Stir to combine and reduce to a simmer. Add salt and pepper to taste. Step 3: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
Lasagna-Stuffed Shells
Step 4: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add shells and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender yet firm to the bite, about 9 minutes. Strain; feel free to reserve some pasta water to add to the sauce if you like.

Directions Step 1: Add dry beans to a bowl, cover with water, and let soak for 8 hours, or overnight. Step 2: Drain beans and transfer to a large pot filled with 3 quarts of cold, fresh water. Add bay leaf, pork shoulder, and onion. Bring to a simmer over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low and stir. Skim off foam if desired. Let simmer until beans are just tender, about 1 hour. Step 3: While beans simmer, combine barbecue sauce, ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar, molasses, mustard, Worcestershire, smoked paprika, cayenne, black pepper, kosher salt, and garlic powder in a bowl with a whisk. Set aside until needed. Step 4: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Step 5: Transfer tender bean mixture to a deep, 15x10-inch baking dish using a spider strainer. Pour in barbecue sauce mixture and 2 ½ cups of the bean cooking liquid. Place bacon slices on top. Step 6: Bake uncovered in the center of the preheated oven until the liquids have reduced into a thick sauce, 2 to 3 hours. Chef’s Notes: Any dry bean will work, but red beans are recommended. Baking time will depend on amount of liquid, as well as size and shape of pan, so start checking doneness after 1 1/2 hours, but may need to go much longer. These not only make a great side dish, but if the budget’s a little tight, these will absolutely work as a main course.

Step 1: In a medium bowl, stir together the olive oil, ranch dressing, Worcestershire sauce, rosemary, salt, lemon juice, white vinegar, pepper, and sugar. Let stand for 5 minutes. Place chicken in the bowl, and stir to coat with the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Step 2: Preheat the grill for medium-high heat. Thread chicken onto skewers and discard marinade. Step 3: Lightly oil the grill grate. Grill skewers for 8 to 12 minutes, or until the chicken is no longer pink in the center, and the juices run clear.

The phenomenon known as Rock Steady Boxing began in 2006 when Scott Newman, an Indiana attorney, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease at the age of 40. With help from his friend Vince Perez, an amateur boxer, he began working out. The intense exercise helped Scott to improve noticeably, prompting him and Vince to form a non-profit organization to help others achieve the same results. By applying Rock Steady Boxing’s program of non-contact boxing workouts, more than 800 affiliated programs across the globe have helped countless people fight back against a debilitating disease. For the estimated one million Americans with Parkinson’s Disease, quality of life slowly worsens as the disease progresses. According to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, Parkinson’s Disease is classified as a “movement disorder” because tremors, slow movement, balance issues and stiffness usually occur when nerve cell damage in the brain causes a drop in the level of dopamine—a chemical that coordinates movement. It can also cause memory problems and depression. Parkinson’s Disease, however, is much more. Although it is not considered a life-threatening disease, it can make people more prone to other dangers, such as falls, fractures, and the aspiration of food, which can lead to pneumonia. Because it can encourage a sedentary lifestyle, it may also exacerbate heart disease.

‘An encouraging angel’ Carly Wilson believes in fighting back. After earning a doctorate in physical therapy, she worked with both children and adults for several years before founding the Conroe affiliate of Rock Steady Boxing in August 2019. Participants quickly learned that she is “in their corner.” Wearing T-shirts that say “Fight Back” and “Persevere,” they rotate stations specifically designed to counter the effects of Parkinson’s Disease. At boxing stations, they work on their jabs, uppercuts, hooks, and backhands.

In addition to leading participants through intense workouts, Carly also designs dual-tasking drills that help with cognition, memory, posture, fine motor skills and balance. For example, at one station, participants might write their names in large letters on a whiteboard, then write mirror images of their names. When gloved up, fighters hit a dummy while counting off the hits—by threes. Workouts and drills, Carly says, are designed to be challenging, but every activity can be modified so each individual can be successful. “Carly is an encouraging angel with a great sense of humor,” says Darlene Dufour, who participated in a Rock Steady Boxing program in Louisiana before moving to Conroe. “My idea of exercise is turning the pages of a book. Extreme exercise is keyboarding,” she jokes. “But they make it fun.” The fact that there is a Rock Steady Boxing program helped

convince Darlene to move to the area. She calls the affiliated program here “phenomenal”—even better than the program she attended in Louisiana. Other participants agree. Dick Jones, who lives in the Lake Conroe area, previously attended other programs for people with Parkinson’s Disease. He found them to be excellent, and decided to try Rock Steady Boxing. “I had big expectations and I was right,” he says. “I started off kind of slow but picked up a little and right now I look forward to it a couple of times a week. I think it has really helped me.” Bill Trainor and his wife (and “cornerman”), Linda, acknowledge that it’s hard to get motivated to exercise alone. They drive from The Woodlands to participate in Conroe’s Rock Steady Boxing program.

They agree that Carly is “very nice, very knowledgeable, very patient,” and say she spends lots of one-on-one time with participants. Rock Steady Boxing, they say, has helped Bill’s strength, agility and balance. Rock Steady Boxing, however, is more than just work. Being able to associate with other people living with Parkinson’s Disease is one of the most beneficial aspects of the program, says Vickie Potter, who is “cornerman” to her husband, Wayne. “Other than the exercise, the fellowship has meant a lot,” she says. “We get out of the house, out of the routine. We get to know new people, what they are going through.” She particularly enjoys monthly meetings, where attendees can learn about subjects related to Parkinson’s Disease—such as restless leg syndrome, a recent topic—and exchange ideas about doctors, medicines and diet. (The PD Fight Club meets the first Wednesday of the month at 10 a.m.)

Rock Steady Boxing, therefore, is more than just an exercise program. It’s also a support group. “A lot of fighters suffer from depression and anxiety,” Carly says. “Building that rapport and community is just as important as the exercise.”

Boxing 4 More When Carly saw the big improvements that her fighters were making, she wondered if a similar program might help others. “I saw how they were benefiting from the class and why they were benefiting from it,” she says, “so I wanted to be able to offer a very similar class for other individuals who may want to work on their balance, strength, coordination and posture.” So, she founded Boxing 4 More. “As we get older, balance and cognition get worse,” she says. Sometimes, gait is affected. “If we don’t practice them daily, we suffer.” Just as Parkinson’s Disease can be frustrating, so can the simple process

of aging. Although most exercise is beneficial, boxing has as unique benefit: “It’s cathartic to get to hit something,” Carly says with a smile. “You can take out your frustrations.” Boxing 4 More is suitable for those who have suffered strokes, Carly says, as a “great next step” when insurance-funded physical therapy sessions run out.

Insurance does not typically pay for Rock Steady Boxing, but many participants find it surprisingly affordable. Although classes meet at the City of Conroe Activity Center, adjacent to the C. K. Ray Recreation Center, it is an independent program. After an initial, one-time $45 assessment, participants pay $60 per month to attend class one day a week, $100 per month to attend twice a week or $130 per month to attend three times a week. Classes are held Monday through Friday. Carly notes that sessions cost about $12 each—roughly the price of a fast-food meal; however, while a fast-food meal isn’t necessarily beneficial, attending a Rock Steady Boxing class is. Scott Keltner was leery about joining Rock Steady Boxing, and procrastinated for about a year before joining, says his wife and “cornerman,” Connie. “Once we came and observed, he was very into it,” Connie says. “He could tell it was helping.”

Wildlife Wonders IF TRUTH “BEE” TOLD By Cheryl Conley Would you believe mankind’s future on this planet depends on the honey bee? One out of every three bites of the food you eat depends on pollinators like the honeybee. Some of those foods are avocados, asparagus, broccoli, squash, cucumbers, apples, pears, berries, kiwis, cherries, melons, and more! Honey bees play a vital role in the growth of healthy crops as well. Without the natural pollination carried out by bees, it is estimated that the U.S. could lose from one-third to one-half of its national food supply. Bees add beauty to our world, too. About 80% of the wildflowers in the U.S. are pollinated by bees. Bees evolved from wasps about 140 million years ago, and there are now about 20,000 species worldwide and about 4,000 in the United States. When this evolution took place, the bees began to switch from prey to pollen. Bee bodies consist of a head, thorax, and abdomen. The head has two antennae used to touch and “smell”, two compound eyes and three simple eyes, and mandibles or “jaws” used for biting, working wax and pollen, and digging. The thorax has two pair of wings and three pair of legs. The abdomen consists of six segments in females and seven in males, internal wax glands (only in honey bees and bumble bees), a stinger (only in females), and branched hairs. Let’s look at two common bees in our area: Honey bees are social bees and live in colonies. Each bee plays a particular role—drone, worker, and the queen. Drones are the males and their role is to mate with the queen. When winter comes, the drones are kicked out of the hive. The workers are sexually underdeveloped females. They clean the hive, collect pollen and nectar, care for the queen, construct beeswax and guard the entry to the hive. The queen gets chosen at birth and she kills her competition. Her job is to reproduce, and she can lay 15,000 eggs in a day!
Each colony consists of hundreds of drones, 50,000 to 60,000 workers and one queen. One bee colony can produce 60 to 100 pounds of honey per year. It is estimated that 29,000 individuals in the U.S. depend on beekeeping for their livelihood. There are fifteen species of bumble bees in the U.S. Bumble bee colonies are quite small and can have from 50 to 400 workers. Bumble bees should be a welcome site in your garden. They are great pollinators of many kinds of flowers and are very recognizable by their loud buzzing. They are usually black and yellow, but can also be red and black or orange and black. The female worker bumble bee can sting, but the males can’t. The bumble bee does not leave its stinger in your skin as honey bees do (and therefore can sting you more than once). Sadly, bees are disappearing. According to the EPA, bee population in the United States dropped 40 percent from 2014-2015. Several factors are causing the decline. One major reason is habitat loss. Humans destroy natural habitats like meadows and forests to make room for new homes, businesses, schools, etc. Climate is another reason. More flooding, rising temperatures, and drought are affecting the blooming seasons of flowering plants that affect the bees’ ecosystem. The use of insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides harm pollinators and other beneficial insects. Parasites, diseases and poor nutrition also contribute to the decline in bee population. What can we do to help save our bees? • Plant a bee-friendly garden filled with native flowering plants. • Give ‘em some sugar. Mix a teaspoon of water and two teaspoons of white granulated sugar together on a spoon and put it on a plate in your garden. • Set a shallow bowl of water in your garden. Bees will drown in bird baths and pools. • Purchase sustainable organic honey. • Don’t use synthetic pesticides in your yard and garden. • Be careful when you weed your garden. Many weeds are beneficial to bees and other pollinators—examples are milkweed and dandelions. Educate your children on the benefits of bees. They are not to be feared. If bothered, bees may sting, but teach children to simply keep their distance.

Relationship With Your Vet Healthy relationships are considered one of the pillars for your wellbeing, because they provide you with life energy that nurtures you from within. As humans, we feel the need to relate to others in order to feel worthy and to feel we belong. We are social creatures. It doesn’t have to be a romantic relationship. All kinds of relationships play an essential role in our lives! Just being in the presence of people with whom you have something in common already contributes to your well-being! This is because all types of encounters are exchanges of energy. Despite the fact proximity is not a condition for us to start reaping the benefits of relationships, the quality of these relationships is essential. Healthy relationships will contribute to a good environment that anyone around you can benefit from energetically. They will allow love from within to come radiating out. You probably never thought about your relationship with your veterinarian (or any other service provider) as a relationship at all. The main relationship with your vet is considered the veterinarian-clientpatient-relationship (VCPR) and is the essential basis for interaction among veterinarians, their clients, and their patients. It is critical to providing quality veterinary care and vital to animal welfare by allowing a veterinarian to regularly assess a pet’s entire physical status, family environment, and to regularly communicate with the owner. In Texas, veterinarians are required by law to maintain a current VCPR within the year in order to continue to dispense medications or even make recommendations for your pet. AAHA defines VCPR to require all of the following: • The veterinarian has assumed responsibility for making medical judgments regarding the health of the patient and the need for medical treatment, and the client (owner or caretaker) has agreed to comply with the veterinarian’s instructions.
• The veterinarian has sufficient knowledge of the patient to initiate at least a general or preliminary diagnosis of its medical condition. This means the veterinarian has physically examined the patient within the past 12 months (or more frequently as dictated by the age of the patient, medical condition, or treatment therapy--such as with controlled substances). • The veterinarian is available for ongoing care of the patient or has arranged for emergency coverage or continuing care and treatment of the animal by an appropriate veterinary professional. • The veterinarian maintains complete and legible medical records, including assessment and treatment plan, in such a way that another veterinarian will be able to proceed with the continuity of care and treatment of that patient. Healthy relationships require that both people respect and trust each other and have an open and non-judgmental dialogue, as well as a practice of give-and-take. Things most important in healthy relationships are trust, loyalty, happiness, respect, emotional support, humor, compromise, freedom/independence, safety, friendship, honesty, forgiveness, communication, quality time, and random acts of kindness. When considering your relationship with your veterinarian, building trust, having good open and honest communication, and treating each other with respect will be greatly beneficial to the care of your pet. Mom struggling with angry son Q: I’m a single mother with a 13-year-old son. His father, whom he sees infrequently, has PTSD from battle experiences. My son has anger toward his father, but I can’t get him to talk about it. It comes out of him in the form of a lot of disrespect directed toward me. What should I do about this? A: I assume that by “this” you mean your son’s supposed anger concerning his father. If I’m right, then you’re focusing on the wrong issue. The problem is the disrespect and hostility your son directs toward you. In the first place, you’re playing amateur psychologist. You’re engaging in pure speculation (which is, by the way, all a psychologist is doing when he claims to know what causes a person to behave in a certain manner). Your theory concerning his disrespect gives your son a free pass to behave as abusively toward you as he pleases. On the other hand, if you happen to be right about the source of your son’s “anger,” the question becomes “so what?” Since when did less than perfect family situations entitle children to misbehave? My parents divorced when I was 3. I had no relationship to speak of with my father until I was 9, after which I only saw him once a year for two weeks. In the interim, I missed my dad, was fairly frustrated at not seeing him, and wanted to jump ship and go live with him. Nonetheless, I behaved respectfully toward my mother…because she would not have tolerated less. You’re doing what today’s parents have been “trained” to do by the media and the mental health professions--trying to understand your son’s misbehavior. In so doing, you are not acting when he misbehaves. Because you do nothing to stop it, your son keeps on disrespecting you. Despite your good intentions, you have become your own worst enemy. If I had disrespected my mother, she would not have tried to understand me. She would have punished me. “Mom, I claim immunity due to unresolved divorce and visitation issues” would have fallen on deaf ears. That was discipline before the Age of Parenting Babble, and children were better off for it. When you stop regarding your son as a victim who is entitled to dump on you and begin acting worthy of respect, your son will begin treating you with respect. Toward that worthy goal, I’d suggest that the next time he blows up at you or treats you like a doormat, you say something along the following lines: “Well, isn’t that interesting! Equally interesting to you, I’m sure, is the fact that you will not go anywhere except school and church for the next two weeks, during which you will receive neither friend nor phone call. And every single time you act disrespectfully toward me during the next two weeks will add yet another week to your “therapy!” Your son needs to learn that women are not dumping grounds for male anger—a lesson only a woman can teach.

Taking the Self Off the Self (We Must Agree) Helps to See the Real Me the compass that directs us and the framework to evaluate our environment, especially characterizing situations and gauging others around us. By knowing our personality’s beliefs, we can hone our lives by coordinating our intuitive foundational person with our conscious activities. The self-concept dates back a long time, and its developers include such notables as Rene Descartes and Sigmund Freud. It relies heavily on what our conscious brain concludes, but self’s processes are subconscious. The challenge of knowing about our innermost self initially may sound hackneyed or unintelligible with a response, “Of course I am my own self, and I understand myself explicitly.” However, self is the core of one’s being. Each of our selves differentiates from all others who are or have ever been, and in doing so, illuminates one’s uniqueness, the SELF. We briefly brush the surface when we identify favorites, such as my favorite color, time of year, or the many others. The self is our being’s foundation from which come our standards, needs, values, principles, and beliefs that create our personalities. Self is
Set aside a time when you will be undisturbed or undistracted and get the consideration underway. What are the happenings and individuals in your lifetime that have shaped your life cycle and your innermost self? Who and what made you who you are? This should be a deep examination of who you really are; refrain from embarking on a “What if something else had happened?” What happened certainly came about. What principles and values are most significant in guiding your life’s choices? How have these beliefs motivated your lifestyle? Are you pleased with what you have accomplished? Make a mental list of major accomplishments. Most of us have a few down blips on a line that just kept on heading upward as time went by. Keep returning to your inner self’s voice that will point toward your truth. Identify what could
be enhanced in your self’s repertoire and vow that your consideration can be implemented. Consider what should be improved to establish a better environment for you, loved ones, and associates. Seriously evaluating your inner-self likely will improve your personal emotional intelligence (which is a substantial boost to your happiness and that of your loved ones). Guiding our lives through improvements in our behavior by adjusting our self can be a fantastic improvement. Recognize that you are responsible for your happiness and you can substantially impact the happiness of those around you. Ask yourself more often about feelings that happen, and gradually have the “core self” achieve the perspective desired by your fully “mindful self”. Try to reduce judgment of others based on previous incidents (either good or bad). This is judging an occurrence because it just looks the same as something earlier. In other words, unless danger is involved, delay judgment until specific circumstances occur. Knowing more about crucial subjects is continually better, and what is more important than yourself?

Along the Road Mineral Wells Mineral Wells, located about 50 miles west of Fort Worth in Palo Pinto and Parker counties, was named for the mineral springs discovered here in the late 1800s. In the early 1900s, the town drew national interest, including being selected as the spring training site in 1919 for the Chicago White Sox. It’s biggest claim to fame, however, is its now-shuttered, opulent Baker Hotel. The hotel is said to be the most haunted place in Texas. But it’s not the only location with paranormal activity. The Crazy Water Hotel, the old Fort Wolters, and a decommissioned army hospital all have numerous sightings. Crazy Water from the Crazy Well continues to be sold today. What is your grandparent name and does it have a special meaning? They call me Meemie. My mother was also Meemie, but she passed away before she could be a Meemie to my grandchildren, so the name was passed down to me.

Number of grandchildren and age range? FOUR grandchildren ranging from 30-38 years old and SIX great-grandchildren ranging from 6 months to 9 years old.

Favorite activity with them? When my oldest grandchild was two years old, we started the tradition of making and decorating cut-out cookies one day during the Christmas holidays. The cookiemaking day now includes my daughter, my grandchildren, their spouses, and my great grandchildren. It is a day we all look forward to every year.

Advice to other/new grandparents? Enjoy every age and stage for time passes so quickly. Before you know it, they are grown with children of their own.

What’s your fondest memory of your grandparents? My grandparents passed away before I could really remember them.

What do you hope your grandkids remember about you? How much I love each of them, and that spending time with them is one of my greatest joys.

The Freedom of a Do-Over When my daughter was little, I ran across James Dobson’s book The Strong Willed Child. Two pages into the introduction, I laughed and said, “Yeah, I think he wrote this specifically about my kid!” Add in a speech disorder that made her words come out jumbled, and we often found ourselves in a verbal tug-of-war. On one particular day, things were getting particularly heated. My daughter was getting madder and madder about not getting her way, and I was getting more than a little fed up at our lack of ability to communicate and come to a meeting of the minds. Finally, she just burst into tears. I looked at her little face, which had turned from frowny to sad, and my mother’s heart just broke for her. She had dug herself into a hole too deep to get out of, so she just sat there and cried in despair. She was beside herself and didn’t
know what to do next. I looked over at her and softly asked, “How about we start the day over again? Would you like that?” “Yes please,” she responded quietly. This was the start of something special in our relationship: the “do-over.” It’s something she knows she can ask for when she knows she has messed up and wants to make amends, but doesn’t know where to start. It’s the gift of grace. How often in our own lives do we come to the end of ourselves, realizing what a mess we have made? Just as my daughter needs me to occasionally grant her a do-over, so we sometimes need a do-over of our own. Praise the Lord, we have the freedom to ask for one thanks to the grace offered us through Jesus Christ.
God gives us the freedom to make our own choices – good and bad – but He also gives us the freedom to come to His throne of grace to repent and do things differently going forward. It’s never too late for a second chance. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 6:23 “David said to Nathan, ‘I have sinned against the Lord.’ And Nathan said to David, ‘The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die.’” – 2 Samuel 12:13 “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” – 1 John 1:9 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” – 2 Corinthians 5:17
