An EXPRESSed LUNCH For the past two decades, I have run our businesses from a home office. There are definitely pros and cons to officing at home. The biggest pro being I can go to work in my pajamas. The biggest con being I never leave “the office.” However, one pro I most enjoy is having the opportunity to schedule lunch or coffee meetings with clients who are also friends.

This week, during one of those lunch meetings, my client Ruby Rushing and I were sitting in a booth. In the booth behind her was a cute little boy who kept looking over her shoulder and smiling at me. Of course, I smiled back. (And might have waved, too.)

Several minutes later, I noticed the cutie had crept down from his perch and was very slowly walking toward us. He stopped momentarily at the end of the bench where Ruby sat, and she smiled and spoke to him, but he kept walking with eyes on me. My initial thought was he was just exploring and checking out all the faces. Since there was another pair of diners behind me, I thought I would get the same hello Ruby did as he passed by. Instead, he stopped and began to climb up on the seat next to me. I was surprised, but even more so as he continued his climb, and without a word, reached up and hugged me! Then he stood beside me, very content to just stay.

By this time, his grandmother had made it to our table and was apologizing. I assured her there was NO need for an apology. Apparently, I resemble her sister, and he was very comfortable coming over for a hello and a hug! My new friend sat with me for several minutes. I asked his name, and he told me it was Camdyn Rash. I told him he had made my day. And he had.

In today’s world of distancing and avoidance, it was a precious moment that hearkened back to a few years ago--a time I hope we return to soon. A time of hugs and sharing… sometimes even between strangers who become friends.

Until next time,

~

Karen

Elaine Robinson

Postcards Magazine: Piney Woods Edition | May 2022

Tesserae are individual tiles arranged with painstaking precision and craftsmanship to create a beautiful mosaic which brings pleasure to the viewer. In like manner, tesserae, in this case, God-given skills and abilities, are utilized with care and commitment to compose a mosaic of ministry that impacts the lives of many and brings fulfillment to the artist. The artist is Elaine Robinson, whose artistic endeavors enrich several area ministries which, in turn, gladden the hearts of many in our community and beyond.

Elaine, you are skilled in several craft and artistic disciplines. At what age did you begin your artistic journey, and who inspired you? I began drawing at an early age, while growing up in Southbridge, Massachusetts. When I was twelve, I decided I wanted to learn to crochet. I had ten aunts, my mother, and two grandmothers, and none of them could crochet! So, I went downtown to Woolworth’s Department Store, bought a how-to book on crocheting, some yarn, crochet hooks, then went home, sat on my bed, and taught myself. No one inspired me, I just had an interest and wanted to learn. I have also learned to quilt, and I enjoy painting.

Tell us about your award-winning quilt and your involvement with the Tall Pines Quilt Guild. I love to quilt and enjoy the more traditional, oldfashioned styles such as 1930 or Civil War era reproduction prints. I employ a lot of color in my quilts and include hand-embroidery in many of them. My sister-in-law Gloria gave me the pattern for a quilt which won a blue ribbon at the 2018 Walker County Fair. I named it “Massachusetts Memories,” and it is composed of snow globes depicting winter scenes, since that is my favorite season. It is both handembroidered and hand-quilted. I had five quilts in the fair this year. I’m very active in the Quilt Guild since retiring from being a teacher’s aide in 2019. As a guild, we raffle a quilt every year, and the proceeds go toward scholarships for two graduating seniors. A candidate must be proficient in either sewing or have an interest in math since quilting involves a great deal of math. We are now in the process of selling raffle tickets, and the raffle will be held during the Huntsville-Walker County “Fair on the Square” in October.

You taught yourself to crochet. How have you used this craft to enrich area ministries? I was teaching a group of girls to crochet in our Vacation

Bible School program at Fellowship of Huntsville Church in June 2019. Tanna Sullivan, who started the Mat Ministry at University Heights Baptist Church, and Alana Smith came to the class to teach us how mats are made with plastic shopping bags. They were involved with a ministry at UHBC called the Bridge Ministry, whose volunteers go to visit the homeless in Houston once a month at a bridge site and deliver plastic sleeping mats, food, and other necessities while sharing the gospel. We learned the steps involved in crocheting a mat, which consists of 540 shopping bags, 11,000 stitches, and generally takes about 15 hours to make. One of the ladies asked me if I wanted to come visit the group, which meets on Mondays from10am-noon at UHBC. I’ve been involved with it ever since and have enjoyed making mats in several unique designs. These mats are lightweight, soft, and easy to clean, all qualities that make them perfect for the situation in which they are used. I’ve made twenty-four mats since 2019. I also crochet thirty hats for this ministry each year, and usually donate these during the colder months. I also help with Charity Bee, a group that meets monthly to make small quilts and other items for local charities that serve children and other needs in the community. I crochet small animals and hats, and usually donate six animals and six hats per month to this cause, which are then donated to the Care Center Huntsville, a non-profit pregnancy medical center which provides testing and education services. The Care Center recipients attend educational classes and earn “Baby Bucks” with which they can “purchase” items such as diapers, formula, clothes and hats, baby blankets, and toys.

Now on to yet another ministry you help with, and that is the Pillowcase Ministry. Tell us about this ministry and your involvement in it. In 2010, the American Patchwork and Quilting Magazine issued a challenge to their subscribers to make one million

pillowcases. I thought, “I can do that,” so I started making pillowcases. The company had a counter on their website at that time

where you could log in and note the number of pillowcases you had made, which I did. A couple of years later I came up with the idea of my church getting involved with this on a local level. I got approval to start this “ministry” and have been leading this effort for ten years. People have donated fabric, money to purchase fabric, or have helped with the sewing. The first year, we made a total of sixty-three pillowcases, and this past year we completed 332. These are donated to assisted living centers, CASA, the Care Center Huntsville, and some health organizations. We also give them to people in our congregation at Fellowship of Huntsville Church who are sick or going through cancer treatments. Also, I was thrilled recently when several friends and I were asked to teach girls from the local American Heritage Girls troop how to make pillowcases so they could donate them to the needy. I enjoy seeing young girls learn to sew and am thrilled to pass along this productive and satisfying endeavor to the next generation.

creativity that comes with designing and painting.

Do you have any special testimonials you would like to share? After donating my handiwork, I usually don’t get feedback from the recipients, but I know it is all going to worthy causes and will be used. I do get an excited response from the person I speak with at Creekside Retirement

And finally let’s hear from Elaine, the painter! I guess it’s like crocheting; I decided I wanted to paint and made it happen! I asked my husband Bob for a band saw one Christmas and started cutting out seasonal shapes to paint. Before long, our children’s minister at church asked if I would paint some scenery and props for our Sunday School classes. Then, I

Community when I tell her that I have pillowcases ready for delivery. Also, there is only one other time where I remember getting instant feedback. It was wintertime and a very chilly day. I was driving to the Matmakers class for the Bridge Ministry, and I happened to think about a man I saw sitting in the Walmart parking lot on many days. He was never begging, but just sitting on the curb. I prayed that he would be there on my way home, and I could give him one of the two crocheted hats that I had in my car. As I drove up to the spot, he was there and had a friend with him. I cautiously lowered my window, and he came to the car and very courteously greeted me. I asked him if he and his friend would like hats, and he said, “Yes ma’am, it done got cold out here.” As I left the parking lot where he and his friend were again sitting,

now wearing my crocheted hats, not only were their heads warmed, but my heart was warmed as well. I thanked God for His gift to them and to me.

Please share any advice you have for others who may want to use their talents and skills to advance causes bigger than themselves. .Just go for it! You’ll never know what you can do until you try. Just try it and see. I like to share with others. And I try to use my time wisely. When my husband and I watch a TV show, I do so with crochet hook and yarn in hand. Before I know it, I’ve got a basketful of hats and little animals ready for people in need. I’m grateful that God has blessed me with these skills, and I am pleased to pass on

blessings to others. Elaine continues the trend of blessing others by currently serving in the Mothers Morning Out ministry at FOHC. Her mosaic of ministry, if actually a quilt, would be on a grand scale covering a king-sized area. Thank you, Elaine, for being a blessing to so many and for encouraging us to share the skills and talents we have been given. The Garden Post By Kim Bius

Creating the Tropical Escape As summer approaches, many of us begin dreaming of a tropical escape. Just the thought decreases the stress level, blood pressure, and brings a sense calm. A great way to bring the ambiance of the “islands” to your home is creating your own tropical escape. You can create a tropical look by adding a few beautiful blooming accent plants, such as hibiscus and bougainvillea, or go all the way and create your own “tropical resort look.” Do not be afraid…… go for color and lots of it. A lush queen palm in a large Mexican pot

with blooming bougainvillea spilling from the base may just be the one accent you need to lend a “tropical air” to your patio space. If you want the whole deal, outdoor cantina bar, outdoor kitchen, waterfalls, lanai, pool, and lush landscape…get exactly what you want. Professional landscape designers can create amazing outdoor spaces in all ranges of budgets. If you would like to add a few tropical blooms to your patio or outdoor space, consider the following plants for hardiness, heat resistance, and “wow” factor.

Chinese hibiscus is a personal favorite. The large colorful blooms only last a day, but the profusion of blooms is amazing. Hibiscus range in size from 2’ max. on the miniatures to 6’, depending on the variety. Hibiscus, like other tropical plants, grow well in containers that can be easily moved when the threat of hard freezing weather occurs. I prefer to plant in raised beds around the lanai; prune all back to 12” and cover with freeze cloth when temperatures approach 35 on a consistent basis. Leave the freeze cloth in place (it is

water and air permeable) until spring, and your plants will be beautiful. Hibiscus are the exception to the phosphorous rule and do best when fertilized with hibiscus food that has a very low phosphorous level. Never use Super Bloom, Miracle- Gro, or other high phosphorous fertilizers on hibiscus….this can prove deadly. If “watering” is not your favorite activity, consider bougainvillea. Bougainvillea are evergreen, thorny vines that redeem themselves in the broiling heat and drought by displaying hundreds of brightly colored brachts that resemble blooms. They love being rootbound with just enough water to keep the leaves from drooping. Overwatering will stop blooming and no amount of fertilizer will force bougainvillea into bloom other than lack of water. Lush evergreen shrubs that bloom large

clusters of orange/red blooms throughout the year, ixora make great accent plants, grow well in containers, and can be grown as a great hedge around a pool. Ixora can withstand temperatures into the upper 20s, reach 4’ x 3’ at maturity, and grow well in half sun to full sun. Considered deer proof. The hardy sun loving perennial plumbago has all the traits we love. Beautiful blue blooms, deer proof, and super low maintenance, Plumbago grow “free-form” In large arching branches. A splash of sky blue gives any landscape a cool, tropical feel. The large Swiss cheese foliage of monstera philodendron will vine and grow over 20’. More cold tender than other tropical plants, but mulched heavily and covered with freeze cloth can survive many winters. Plant these at the base of arching palms to create a rainforest look. Philodendrons’ will need afternoon

shade and will not tolerate direct summer sun after 1:00. The queen of tropicals, plumeria have a cult following (many gardeners have risked customs to smuggle an exotic variety back to their garden). Only a 4” piece of stalk is needed to start your own plant. Plumeria love a sunny location, with good water and plumeria food. They can be fussy, but nothing compares to the fragrance of a plumeria bloom. Summer is well on the way, so have fun and enjoy the lazy days to come. Happy gardening everyone!

Getting home should be EASY. I'll make sure it is.

Since their humble beginnings playing music in Lubbock, Texas, Flatland Cavalry has taken their old-school, yet uniquely fresh sound across the country and to country music’s most iconic stage. The sextet now has three critically-acclaimed albums and is touring the country and beyond, gaining new fans with every show. Postcards Magazine sat down with bandleader Cleto Cordero to learn more about the journey that started in West Texas songwriting circles and dancehalls—and how faith has been the greatest driver of their success.

How did this incredible musical journey start for you?

Lent was over, I had gotten hooked and pushed past the blisters on my fingers.

My mom would keep a radio on the windowsill when I was growing up, and I think that’s where I fell in love with music. And usually, it was turned to a country station. My parents loved George Strait. We would listen to his “50 No. 1 Hits” in the car, and it would get us all the way from Midland to Alpine for family visits. And growing up, I would listen to my older brother’s CD player when he was away (even though he always said, “Don’t touch my stuff!”). I would listen and write down the lyrics, because I wanted to know the words so I could sing for the kids on the school bus. I would mimic people’s voices, and they got a kick out of it. When I was 14, that’s when it really changed for me. My brother bought me a guitar for Christmas, and the movie School of Rock had come out around that time. It was really influential in me wanting to learn to play. I thought if those kids could learn, so could I. I never get tired of watching that movie.

Then, when I turned 17, I wrote a song because I told someone I would. Had to keep my word and write it in a pinch. I played it for my peers and showed it to my English teacher. She was a very sweet lady and a believe-in-your-dreams kind of person. I saw people were moved by it. My dad said, “You wrote that? You should keep going.” He had never said that before – he never said, “Good job at baseball.” (laughs)

1/1

So, what happened next after getting the guitar? I was raised Catholic, so we would turn off the TV for Lent. I had nothing to do the whole Lenten season, and my dad had this VHS tape of a guy teaching you how to play guitar. We started it together, and I did it every night. After

After graduating high school, how did you continue developing your skills and begin really chasing your dreams? After two years in a junior college, I moved to Lubbock to go to Texas Tech. My brother said if you’re going to waste Mom and Dad’s money, get a good degree. So, I got a degree in accounting. He knew I wanted to do music. Our drummer Jason and I have known each other since 8th grade. We were both living in Lubbock, going to Tech, and both had this dream to play music. We went to open-mic nights as soon as we moved to town and started to get our feet wet out there. The Blue Light had a songwriter night, and I had heard of Blue Light Live that put out people like Josh Abbott, William Clark Green, Pat Green, and Wade Bowen. I initially thought after junior college I

Then I heard a still, small voice that said, “Record the songs – get to work.” So, I called Scott Faris at Amusement Park Studios and asked if I could cut a single, which ended up becoming the Come May EP in 2015. Then we got a single on local radio, Red Dirt Rebel, and it became a Top 5 on the Drive At 5 and then got to No. 1. People were requesting it, and we played it at The Blue Light, and people came out in droves. That’s when I decided either to get a real job or chase this with my whole passion.

would go to Austin to the Music Capital of Texas, but I would have been a goldfish in a big pond when all these signs were pointing north to Lubbock. So, I did songwriters’ night every Monday – never missed one. Jason and I started playing around town and found our guitar player Reid, who was 19. Soon we had six band members. We were a cover band playing on Broadway in Lubbock where our peers were. Every once in a while, we’d throw in an original, and we did that for a couple of years. Then I graduated in 2014 and had a panic attack.

Oh no! Why a panic attack? I realized I wasn’t a student anymore, and I had to get a job, and that rocked my world.

U-RENT-EM U-RENT-EM, WE-GOT-EM

I was working in construction installing windows as I was doing in college, and I tried to find an accounting job which was one of the most painful memories I have – knowing that’s not what I wanted to do.

I had to wait for the band to graduate, so I still did odd jobs – built road cases in my garage. I remember cutting metal in my garage and listening to our mixes for our album Humble Folks, and it made me cry because I knew when people heard it, I wouldn’t be doing that anymore.

Soon after, we got a booking agent, management and people wanted to help us. We’ve had ups and downs, but it’s worked out for us to be here today.

Over the past few years and now with three albums, your music has evolved, but you’ve stayed true to your roots. Talk about the inspiration behind the song, Gettin’ By. I went to the cowrite one day, but I didn’t have much to say. But I showed up and did my best. We talked about growing up, and that title brought to mind a photo I have of my dad and all us kids – there were seven of us – and he had a stern look on his face. He didn’t really smile a bunch in photos. Then I realized he was younger than me in these photos with seven kids. I can imagine he was stressed. We were just getting by, but as a kid I didn’t know that. Their love and faith have been a driver for me. My parents dreamed of having a large family. They came from very humble beginnings near the border, and they wanted to get us away from that life, so we settled in Midland. At one

Flatland Cavalry also made its Grand Ole Opry debut during the pandemic. What was that night like? The Grand Ole Opry debut was a pivotal experience. All our families drove in from all over. All six of my siblings showed up, and my mom and dad. When we took the stage and stood in the circle and played Country Is, I told the story about starting in a garage. We ended with Stompin’ Grounds – a song about being born in this land and ending up back in the ground. We got a standing ovation, so that was special.

You talk about your family a lot and how they have had a major role in your success so far. You also talk about your faith. How much do you rely on your faith in this journey? It’s the most important thing in my life. I am not saying I am never doubtful, worrisome, or fearful, but I know it’s the most important thing, because without belief you cannot have a dream or anything to shoot for. You stick with that, and it will give you everything – the songs, people in your life to love and love you, and just try to be a decent person. point, there were all nine of us in a singlewide trailer. From nine people in a single-wide to paying for all of our college. They built a house on the same property, and they are just wonderful people. All the faith and love I have in my heart comes from them and my journey.

How did Flatland Cavalry adapt to the pandemic? Pandemic was a sowing season for us – we knew it was a time to write songs, rehabilitate, and spend time with family – soak all that time up, and here we are back at work.

Speaking of love – you also got married during the pandemic to the super talented Kaitlin Butts. You both are so down to earth, yet so focused on your musical careers.

I tell Kaitlin, “let’s pour all our time into this and do all the work that we’ve been doing, and in the future if we don’t get to do this, we can still say – look at all the stuff we did.”

Great advice, and Flatland Cavalry is certainly doing stuff! They recently went across the pond to perform at the C2C – Country to Country festival, and they just released a YouTube video series, “Far Out West Sessions.” Cordero will soon begin recording the second album by “The Panhandlers,” which consists of himself, Josh Abbott, John Baumann, and William Clark Green. And we could see another Flatland Cavalry album in the works by year’s end.

Welcome back to the Dear Gabby column! It was fun watching the kiddos hunting Easter eggs last month. It’s amazing that 10 kids can pick up 5,000 eggs in a yard the size of a football field in 10 minutes, but it takes them a week to pick up 5 toys in a small bedroom. I also saw a 3-year-old pull up apps on a cell phone. I just figured out how to turn mine off without taking the battery out. But, I’m good at minding other people’s business! Drop me a line to Dear Gabby at PostcardsLive.com for some cleverly disguised astute advice.

Spring has sprung, and summer is right around the corner. I am no spring chicken and do not look forward to trying to find cute clothes that are flattering to someone my age. I recently walked into a department store and looked around. Something was missing. Sleeves! What are ladies of a certain age supposed to do? NO RIGHT TO BARE THESE ARMS

DEAR NRTBTA My body is a temple; ancient and crumbling. We can’t help it, but we can cover it up. I prefer to shop locally, but I’ve done a little online shopping recently for summer clothes. I don’t know why department stores call them fitting rooms anyway, when nothing fits. Let’s be realistic. At our age, we look better with sleeves and pants legs or hose. On the rare occasions that I really need to dress up, the number of runs in my panty hose, and the location of said runs, determines my outfit. GABBY

The Vietnam Wall Gets a Home in

Huntsville The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a U.S. national memorial in Washington, D.C., honoring service members of the U.S. armed forces who fought in the Vietnam War. The site is dominated by a black granite wall engraved with the names of those service members who died as a result of their service in Vietnam and Southeast Asia during the war. The wall, completed in 1982, has since been supplemented with the statue The Three Soldiers and the Vietnam Women’s Memorial. The memorial is maintained by the National Park Service and receives around 3 million visitors each year. The Memorial Wall was designed by American architect Maya Lin. In 2007, it was ranked tenth on the “List of America’s Favorite Architecture” by the American Institute of Architects. As a national memorial, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Many recall overwhelming support and participation when the Traveling Vietnam Wall Memorial made a visit to Huntsville in 2004. There were visitors around the clock! The Traveling Memorial was made for the purpose of helping heal and rekindle friendships and

to allow people who may not be able to travel to Washington D.C. the opportunity to visit and pay respects. It is an 80% replica of the famous Vietnam Wall in Washington, D.C., measuring 370 feet long and eight feet tall in the center, going down to four feet on the

ends. It is complete with six software linked information panels that stand apart from the memorial with bios on some of the 58,320 names on the wall.

The company which operates the traveling wall recently retired the wall to construct a new one and offered HEARTS the opportunity to give a permanent home to the retired memorial. This began an extensive effort involving planning, studies, collaborating, and fundraising. Culminating an effort of several years to make the permanent home possible, approximately 2,000 people attended the dedication on Sunday March 27th.

With no other memorial like it in the region, H.E.A.R.T.S. Veterans Museum Director Tara Burnett and board president Kenneth Lee are excited to finally be able to offer a tribute for veterans and their families to easily access. Said Burnett, “This is an amazing tribute to not only our fallen from Walker County, but to all our fallen heroes from the Vietnam War. Through many conversations I have had with Vietnam Veterans, this wall has such an important meaning to them. This will give them the opportunity to come and reflect and pay their respects to persons they knew who lost their lives in the war.”

Vietnam War, (1954–75) Information from Encyclopedia Britannica

A protracted conflict that pitted the communist government of North Vietnam and its allies in South Vietnam, known as the Viet Cong, against the government of South Vietnam and its principal ally, the United States. The war was also part of a larger regional conflict (see Indochina wars) and a manifestation of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union and their respective allies. At the heart of the conflict was the desire of North Vietnam, which had defeated the French colonial administration of Vietnam in 1954, to unify the entire country under a single communist regime modeled after those of the Soviet Union and China. The South Vietnamese government, on the other hand, fought to preserve a Vietnam more closely aligned with the West. U.S. military advisers, present in small numbers throughout the 1950s, were introduced on a large scale beginning in 1961, and active combat units were introduced in 1965. By 1969 more than

500,000 U.S. military personnel were stationed in Vietnam. Meanwhile, the Soviet Union and China poured weapons, supplies, and advisers into the North, which in turn provided support, political direction, and regular combat troops for the campaign in the South. The costs and casualties of the growing war proved too much for the United States to bear, and U.S. combat units were withdrawn by 1973. In 1975 South Vietnam fell to a full-scale invasion by the North. The human costs of the long conflict were harsh for all involved. Not until 1995 did Vietnam release its official estimate of war dead: as many as 2 million civilians on both sides and some 1.1 million North Vietnamese and Viet Cong fighters. The U.S. military has estimated that between 200,000 and 250,000 South Vietnamese soldiers died in the war. In 1982 the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was dedicated in Washington, D.C., inscribed with the names of 57,939 members of U.S. armed forces who had died or were missing as a result of the war. Over the following years, additions to the list have brought the total past 58,200.

Plans include a memorial garden area near the apex of the wall with a special plaque to honor the fallen from Walker County, as well as a Never Forgotten Garden, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The only empty tomb at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is the Vietnam tomb. The remains originally entombed were identified and the tomb was left empty to represent all of our Missing In Action from the Vietnam War.

Burnett says she is extremely thankful for all the entities, businesses, and individuals who have made donations or provided services to bring the memorial

A Day in the Life Story by Gracie Barnett Submitted Photos

Lone Star Olive Ranch has been growing thousands of olive trees and producing olive oil for over a decade. Based in Madisonville, Texas, the ranch, started by Christine McCabe and Cathy Bernell, is one of only a few olive ranches in the state of Texas. Having already branched out into other areas, the effects of Winter Storm Uri inspired them to reevaluate and expand even further. Sometimes, days in the life of our businesses require us to adapt, and play the hand we are dealt.

62

Postcards Magazine: Piney Woods Edition | May 2022

How did the Lone Star Olive Ranch get its start? We started a small miniature cattle operation and learned that we weren’t ranchers, per se. We realized we needed to do something a little more crop-oriented, not something that had a cute face. So, in 2006 or 2007, my business partner Cathy Bernell started doing some research to change what we were doing and look for fruit or nut crops that we could get into. We looked at quite a few things, but she kept coming up on this new emerging crop, which was olives. There was very little information actually available, and still to this day there’s not a lot of information about olive growing in Texas. It just sounded so cool. So in 2008, we bought some olive trees and planted them on my farm in Madisonville and were able to keep them alive for a whole year! We didn’t kill them - any losses we had came as a direct result of cows that broke into the corral area we had the trees in. But the trees actually made it through a full season and grew and did quite well! We started looking at land, and in March 2009, we transplanted about 20-25 trees and then planted 2,000 more. From there, we kept expanding the grove until eventually, we had about 45 acres planted and 14,000 trees with over 27 varietals. The initial planting was in March of 2009; we finished all our planting in 2013 or 2014. We wanted to find out what we could grow, what we could produce, but beyond just growing a tree. We weren’t in it to grow the tree, we were in it to grow the tree and produce the fruit so we could produce extra virgin olive oil.

How did you decide which trees to include in your ranch? When choosing trees, we had conversations with California growers, but learned very quickly that Texas is not California. We could not mirror what California was doing because everything was completely different here. We had to rely on resources from the few people in Texas who had planted some groves, but they were in very different regions, so we had to take their word for it and do our own pilot. That’s why we ended up with so many trees. Out of those varietals, we were looking for trees that could survive our climate and bear fruit early. We started out with Arbequinas, Arbosanas, and Koroneiki - all very customary plantings for the United States. Then we started venturing into unknowns, like hardy, rustic Italian varietals, of which we had about six, and seven French varietals that were very much a pilot program - only two out of seven ended up producing. All the Italians did very well, but they took longer to produce.

How did Winter Storm Uri impact the ranch? So, before Winter Storm Uri, we had only started to receive better crop loads from them. Last year and this year would have been the loads that we were looking for in terms of volume in the trees. We had twelve groves that represent the many different varietals, and at our highest point we had 14,000 trees. Now we have a re-emergence with about

2,200-2,500 trees that prompted us to diversify! We have 80 acres and will not go back in with the 45 we had planted. We’ll go back in with a smaller block of about 20 acres, and diversify with other crops.

Is the main focus of the ranch the olive oil production? Historically, yes. The storm has definitely changed what we’re doing and how we’re doing it, but our focus has always been on the production of the oil. We started another company called Olive These Foods. Cathy loves to cook and enjoys creating different things, so she came up with a couple recipes and formulations we could make other products with. For example, the All Natural Slow Burn barbecue sauce, which we did with Texas Q. We use our bourbon barrel olive oil in that to create a whole new product. We also have a product called BeEvoo, which is a honey-olive oil spreadable. Cathy’s always coming up with something, and I’m always trying to keep up with her. She has so many wonderful ideas; specialty food is something she’s really passionate about, and keeping those ingredients simple and wholesome is important.

What other avenues are you pursuing besides olive production? We’re also doing a two-acre garden right now for farm-to-table local restaurants. There are some other crops we’re looking at that would be sustainable and environmentally friendly permanent crops, but I don’t have enough information to talk about it yet. We also have invested in

The February 13–17, 2021 North American winter storm, unofficially referred to as Winter Storm Uri by the Weather Channel, was a major winter and ice storm that had widespread impacts across the United States, Northern Mexico, and parts of Canada. The storm resulted in the National Weather Service issuing various winter weather alerts impacting over 170 million Americans. Over 9.9 million people in the U.S. and Mexico experienced blackouts, many due to a major power crisis in Texas, which became the largest in the U.S. since the Northeast blackout of 2003. The storm contributed to a severe cold wave that affected most of North America. The storm also brought severe destructive weather to the Southeastern United States, including several tornadoes. On February 16, there were at least 20 direct fatalities and 13 indirect fatalities attributed to the storm; by January 2, 2022, the death toll had risen to at least 290, including 276 people in the United States and 14 people in Mexico. The system is estimated to have cost over $196.5 billion in damages, including at least $195 billion in the United States and over $1.5 billion in Mexico, making it

the costliest winter storm on record, as well as the costliest natural disaster recorded in the United States. It is also the deadliest winter storm in North America since the 1993 Storm of the Century, which killed 318 people.

a Texas BBQ company, called Texas Q, with Pitmaster Sloan Rinaldi. We rebranded, relaunched, and opened up a food truck in Kingwood, Texas along with our line of award-winning BBQ Sauces. We’re still really heavily involved in olives, though. Even though the state has declined significantly in regard to olive production, groves are rebuilding, and there are still groves around the state that are doing better.

Is there anything else about the ranch you’d like people to know? I just want people to know we’re still here and we’re not going away. We’re going to keep going strong. Learn more about Lone Star Olive Ranch at lonestaroliveranch.com.

Information from Texas A&M Agrilife Extension • Best area in Texas for commercial olive production is the southwest region north of Laredo and southwest of San Antonio. While production is feasible in large parts of East, Central, and South Texas, growers should expect winter freezes to kill trees to the ground about 3 years of every 10. • Most olives grown commercially in Texas are pressed for oil. • Once established for 3-5 years, olive trees become more resistant

to freeze damage; however, they can lose cold hardiness with erratic winter temperature fluctuations in Texas. • Unlike most fruit trees in Texas, the olive does not set fruiting buds in fall. Instead, sets flower buds during winter only after being exposed to cool nights and mildly warm days. • Under proper conditions, an olive tree will begin bearing harvestable amount of fruit at 4-5 years old. Harvest begins mid to late September or early October. • Most olive crops are removed from trees by hand. Larger operations

harvest mechanically, using a shaker to vibrate the tree and dislodge the fruit. Shakers harvest only about 75% of the fruit and can sometimes damage the trees. • Fruit must be processed promptly, because it deteriorates fast. When fresh, fruit is not palatable because it contains phenolic compounds and oleuropein, a bitter glycoside. To be used as food, must either be pressed for the oil or treated with lye and salt to produce the canned or preserved table fruit. • Depending on the cultivar, it takes from 75-125 pounds of olives to produce 1 gallon of oil.

Wildlife Wonders WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A BABY BIRD By Cheryl Conley

It’s spring, and that means it’s baby season. You may come across a baby bird that has fallen out of the nest, but do you know what to do? Here is some helpful information. First, determine if it’s a nestling or a fledgling. Nestlings have no feathers and will (in all cases) require your help. Fledglings are juvenile birds and will have some very soft down and perhaps a few adult feathers. In some cases, fledglings don’t need any help. FOR NESTLINGS - Try to locate the nest. Look up and see if you can spot it. If possible, place the bird back in the nest. It’s an old wives’ tale that the mama bird will not accept a baby touched by humans. If it’s not possible to put it back in the nest, place in a small box lined with paper towels or soft cloth. Don’t use terry cloth! The bird can get its claws caught in this type of fabric. You must keep the baby warm with either a hot water bottle or heating pad on low, but NEVER place the nestling directly on these items. They can easily get burned. Place the heating pad or hot water bottle UNDER the box, put the cloth or paper towels in the box and place the bird on top. Put the box in a warm, quiet, dark place away from noise and family pets. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FEED THE NESTLINGS OR GIVE THEM WATER. IN EVERY SITUATION, get them to a wildlife rehabilitator or wildlife center as soon as possible. Every second counts! FOR FLEDGLINGS - If you find them hopping around on the ground, sitting under bushes, or even sitting on a low branch, LEAVE THEM ALONE. They are just learning to fly and will spend a few days on the ground. Mama is nearby and watching over her baby. Keep an eye on the fledgling to make sure of this. If you don’t see the mama bird after a couple of hours, then something may have happened to her.

JOIN OUR TEAM

If you don’t see her, capture the fledgling, being very careful not to harm it. They are fragile. Don’t be afraid that it will hurt you. It won’t. You will need to determine if the fledgling is injured. Do you see blood? Look closely at the nostrils for blood. Is the bird lying on its side? Is the head tilted to one side? Is the bird shivering? Is the bird out in the open nowhere near bushes or trees? If it appears hurt, make a “nest” as you would for the nestling above. Keep it warm and in a dark, quiet place. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FEED IT OR GIVE IT WATER. Contact a wildlife center immediately. Don’t ever try to feed these birds or tend to any injuries yourself. Many times, good intentions lead to the death of these fragile animals. The most important thing you can do for these babies is to seek help from qualified rehabilitators who are trained in dealing with these exact situations.

Vet Connect: By Kim VanWagner, D.V.M.

Perks of Having Pets and the Similarities Compared to Humans As we honor National Pet Month, let’s take a look at some of the keys and benefits of owning pets. Some physical and emotional needs fulfilled by pet ownership include: physical activity, comfort, contact, love, loyalty, affection, and experience with loss if the pet is lost or passes away. When we compare babies and pets…most

would agree that both: take over the bed; eat food off the floor; cry/whine/moan or even yell when they want something; are ALWAYS happy to see their owners/parents; and cause a monsoon when it’s bath time. Most people today consider their pets to be members of their families. New research suggests dogs may be more like us than we

thought. The Arizona Canine Cognition Center at the University of Arizona found that dogs and 2-year-old children show similar patterns in social intelligence (even more so than children and chimpanzees) when cooperative communication tasks were evaluated. They wanted to evaluate whether there is a superficial similarity between kids and dogs or if there is a distinct kind of social intelligence seen in both species. Another area of research by Lisa Horn (from the Vetmeduni’s Messerli Research Institute, Austria) and her colleagues has revealed that the relationship between dogs and owners is very similar to the bond between young kids and their parents. Dogs and children seem to share what is known as the “secure base effect.” This refers to the idea that when human infants interact with the environment, they use their caregivers as a secure base. The investigators were surprised to see that the animals were a lot less eager to work for food when their owners were not present than when they were. Researchers conclude a caregiver’s presence is critical for a pet to act in a confident manner. According to the American Academy of Child

and Adolescent Psychiatry, “A child who learns to care for an animal, and treat it kindly and patiently, may get invaluable training in learning to treat people the same way.” Children develop social skills by taking care of pets. Benefits of children owning pets include: contributing to the child’s self-esteem and selfconfidence by developing positive feelings towards pets; developing trusting relationships with others if they have a positive relationship with the pet; as well as developing non-verbal communication, compassion, and empathy.

t s

Different purposes served by pets include: 1.

They can be safe recipients of secrets and private thoughts--children often talk to their pets like they do to their stuffed animals.

2.

They provide lessons about life, including reproduction, birth, illnesses, accidents, death, and bereavement.

3.

They can help develop responsible behavior in the children who care for them.

4.

They provide a connection to nature.

5.

They can teach respect for other living things.

One blogger noted other commonalities between humans and pets to include that both: experience the world consciously; maintain a social life; are clean, intelligent; have feelings, have self-perception; develop diseases; and remember faces. Many other features can be found that make our pets similar yet different from us. Bottom line, we both benefit from each other when placed in a healthy co-living environment.

Why take the Risk? Get your pet Microchipped

Living with Children By: John K. Rosemond www.rosemond.com

Don’t worry about teen’s vaping Q: Our son, a senior in high school, is vaping. He claims he does it to control his anxiety. I worry about him getting into harder drugs when he goes to college this coming fall. What’s your take on this?

A: Your son hasn’t done his homework. Nicotine is more likely to produce anxiety and related symptoms — tachycardia, for example — than have a calming effect. The exception is that once a person has developed nicotine dependence, mental unease (i.e., anxiety) does tend to rise between use as craving increases, in which case puffing on a vape is probably going to produce temporary calming. On the other hand, your son may be experiencing a placebo effect from vaping. That is, he thinks it’s helping him deal with anxiety; therefore, it is helping him deal with anxiety. Human beings can talk themselves into (or, be talked into) believing all sorts of absurdities. Before we go any further, let’s get two misconceptions out of the way.

ber to Remem our pets le y schedu while you’re ng boardi vacation on

First, nicotine itself is not associated with causing cancer. The risk of lung cancer is primarily a matter of the junk in cigarettes — ammonia, for example. Second, nicotine is addictive, for sure, but the addiction is not debilitating like, say, crack cocaine. It’s more akin to being addicted to caffeine. (Full disclosure: Yours truly is addicted to caffeine. I don’t steal purses from little old ladies to fund my habit, however.) Some studies have found an association between vaping and later use of dangerous drugs (for the sake of argument, I’m lumping cannabis in with “dangerous”). But to my knowledge, the studies in question have not been replicated, so the reports are fuzzy.

In your son’s case, the most important consideration is his age. He is or soon will be eligible to join the armed services and vote. At this stage of the game, I doubt you are going to be able to do anything constructive about your son’s vaping, and anything you attempt by way of force is only going to cause him to become more secretive. Within your son’s peer group, vaping may be cool in high school and maybe even college. But when he gets out into the world, he’s going to quickly discover that vaping is going to be neither professionally nor socially advantageous. The bottom line: I think this will run its course. While it does, I strongly advise you to let this go. There are bigger fish to fry, for sure.

1705 11th Street • Huntsville Mon., Wed., Thur., Fri.

When evaluating research, one must always consider that a study reports an average which does not predict any individual outcome. So, a study finding that vaping is likely to precede drug use included vapers who never went on to use drugs other than nicotine. If you want to worry about something, the most dangerous drug of choice among college students is alcohol.

Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home (SHMFH), a full-service funeral home, was formed in 2002. Owner Greg Smith opened the doors in September 2003. In 2004, Greg brought Larry Graves in as a director and part owner. Larry has since retired, and Greg now serves as both owner and director. As Greg states, “We are family-owned and not associated with a big corporation. We take pride in having a great reputation and are here to serve friends and families in our communities.” Greg’s son Will is also a part

of the family business as both a director and an embalmer. The majority of the staff have been with the funeral home since its inception, are knowledgeable in dealing with the many needs that accompany the loss of a loved one, and provide these services with patience and understanding. SHMFH has three locations, the Huntsville facility, as well as locations in Willis and Montgomery. The Willis location has an 18-acre perpetual care cemetery that adjoins the funeral home, Smith Memorial Park.

Families can be served either, through Pre-need planning, or At-need, meaning at the time a loved one has passed. Greg recommends pre-need planning so decisions can be made prior to a loss. Families then have more time and presence of mind to carefully think through the options, rather than having to make crucial decisions in the immediacy of the moment. A pre-need plan can be paid for at the time of planning, purchased along with life insurance to help with the cost, or paid at the time services

are rendered. According to County Judge Danny Pierce, “They will work with you in any way to make it affordable, to make it what you want, and something that you are proud of. You can trust them and know that you have done your very best for your family member.” Pre-planning also allows a family to more effectively customize the funeral to the person’s wants and desires, and in a less stressful way. Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home excels

Belinda Honea

in customizing your loved one’s service and offers several choices regarding the type of funeral service desired, the style of casket, the method of transport to the grave site, and other details. A full funeral service is available, presided over by either the family’s minister or a pastor provided by SHMFH. The chapel is equipped with a sophisticated sound system and with an array of available musical selections. The family can also opt for live music using the digital organ/piano or other instrumentation. Some families choose

instead to have a full cremation service. This service is exactly like a funeral service with the addition of cremation afterwards. For military veterans, the formalities of a service can include an honor guard provided by the American Legion of Huntsville or the casualty assistance office for the particular branch of the military, a 21-gun salute, and an American flag provided by the US government. SHMFH offers a full selection of casket styles on site in the Selection Room, and additional choices are available online from their Houston warehouse, with delivery within 24 hours. A casket can also be personalized with hand-carved details, branding, or other unique features. Another aspect of the funeral that can be customized is the transporting of the casket to the grave site. As Greg states, “There is no limit to what we can do. We have transported the casket to the grave site by horse-drawn carriage or wagon or by motorcycle hearse. We will do our absolute best to fulfill your most cherished wishes.” Asked what cemeteries they use, Greg responded, “Any cemetery. We have performed funerals at the Washington, D.C.

If the family wishes, SHMFH can also produce a professional quality video which will serve as a lasting tribute to their loved one. When shown during visitation, it enhances the quality of the time by helping family and friends to recall happy and meaningful memories and to celebrate a life well-lived. They use professional software to compile and arrange photos, either paper or digital, around a chosen theme and music to produce a beautiful statement of the loved one’s life. This video will be provided to the family to enjoy for years to come. Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home will soon be adding a new feature to its property in Huntsville. This is a family gathering place where meals can be catered or provided by family members and will allow family and close friends to share memories and a meal together either before or after a service. It is located next to the chapel, and also allows for the family to have a private prayer time prior to the service if they wish. When you meet Greg, you understand why SHMFH has the well-earned reputation of caring and compassion for which it is known. He recently was presented the 2021 Ed Sandhop Spirit of Huntsville Award by the Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce, an award that celebrates the

character of one who is kind, compassionate, and professional. In 2008, he received the Sam Houston State University Service Award, the highest award the Alumni Association gives to a non-graduate of SHSU. He has also been active in the Huntsville Lions Club and Huntsville Rotary Club, served as a past president of the Conroe Noon Lions Club, and earned the lifetime achievement award through Lions Club International. These accolades speak to Greg’s care and commitment to the community, the same commitment that has been exemplified since he first opened the doors of SHMFH. And again, in a testimonial from Danny Pierce, as he shares, “I’m from a big family, and I’ve been in funeral homes all over the state, and this one stands out. Health Matters www.drjimshealthtips.com By James W. Jones, MD, PhD, MHA

Include Wisdom to Make Your Health Outcomes Awesome The Bible notes, “Wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.” WOW. Wisdom is forwardthinking about what to do or not do when a specific situation arises. Further, when action is needed and the correct course is desired, the correct recommendation for what to do is termed wisdom. Knowledge in that context is highly desirable. Common sense applications of what to do in the rest of life’s situations may not be applicable in health and wellness issues. We will see. Assuming truth is what you want it to be in your health is dangerous. BE REAL. Each of us must arrange to live health-providing lives to achieve and retain good health. I made it a standard in my life that, if I was to err regarding healthy lifestyle, it would be on the overly cautious side. Knowledgeable planning for emergencies is invaluable. If your mate or roommate has substantial coronary disease, take a CPR course. Courses are offered locally in most locations. Whenever sudden severe pain happens (especially in the chest area, abdominal area, or head) call 9-1-1. When you have less severe

problems but bothersome, depart immediately to get medical care; don’t wait to see if it gets better. If it betters on the way, you can turn around. Know whether or not your doctor has someone

o n call. Keep a current document handy of your medical conditions and include a list of medications you are taking and their dosages. Regarding wellness, drugs and supplements know and take the amount recommended- more is not better and can even be harmful. Know and avoid departures from what is the proper dosing.

In life, we recognize the valuable principle of moderation and avoid going overboard in our decisions and actions. Just as you don’t spend more than you make, don’t eat more than you require nutritionally. These are what we should live by, but at times, we take in more than we need and risk accumulations which our bodies can’t handle. Don’t make the mistake of choosing just to live longer. You also (even more so) want to live better as you live longer. Again, assuming truth is what you want it to be is inherently dangerous. Coupling that with the “ignore it and it will go away” mindset becomes beset with danger. This is especially true of vascular conditions, which include heart attacks and strokes. A beginning heart attack may mimic gastrointestinal upsets, leading one to the bathroom for self-treatment. The bathroom is one of the most common rooms to be the place of passing on- BE AWARE. Severe nausea or gas-type pains can happen early. Vascular problems happen instantly. One minute everything is copacetic, and the next one’s condition appears quite serious.

Creative Corner Facing Death in the Lake’s Edge By Frank Minton

On a warm Saturday last November, I decided to water flowers planted a few days prior, with no thought I was about to face death! Our townhouse in Walden on Lake Conroe in Montgomery, Texas is only ten feet from the water’s edge. With me being a retired Baptist minister, my wife Joyce and I have felt blessed to have lived 17 years in such beautiful surroundings: 180-degree view of the marina with dozens of docked sailboats, the yacht club’s stately building in clear sight, and several large 3-story condos across the water. 409 E Collard St, Madisonville,TX

Walking backward pulling on the water hose, I failed to realize how near I was to the lake’s edge. Suddenly, I plunged backward, headfirst into the cold water, clothes, shoes, and all! The water was up to my chest, and the bulkhead was over a foot higher, with nothing for me to grab onto. Trying to swim to a more acceptable place was not an option. It was over 200 yards to the condo area, and the sailboat docks were higher than the bulkhead wall. Frantically and repeatedly, I bashed my knees against the concrete walls to help lift up my body, but to no avail. I knew I had no chance to get out by myself.

My continued calling to Joyce was so weak I just stopped trying. I began moving step by step toward our patio area where our large windows were located. Perhaps, I thought, Joyce might be able to see me.

Suddenly, without warning, I saw a group of happy partygoers. The men were well dressed in slacks, and the women were in high heels and attractive dresses. I thought, “I’ll join them, but what’s all this water doing at a party?” I regained consciousness, stood up, and began moving more slowly toward my goal. As I reached view of the windows, the partygoers appeared again, and this time I was more determined to join them. Again, rushing water invaded the party group. I felt another episode would be my last! Energy and time was running out.

I spent a week in hospital care with a heart catheterization which revealed no heart attack. My knees were so battered and bruised it took three days before I could walk.

As I hung on, I looked up. To my grateful surprise, a lady was standing in front of me. I begged, “That’s my house. Go get my wife!” In a quick minute, Joyce was at the lakeside back door. “Honey, get the stepladder in the utility room,” I weakly called out to her. Joyce retrieved the ladder, which the lady rushed to me. With strength fading and the ladder sinking, I made one step, then two, then a wobbly big step to the white handle of the ladder, pushed with my foot, and crawled onto the deck onto my stomach, so exhausted I couldn’t move.

Today, reflecting on my near-death experience causes me to feel closer to God. Certainly, God yet has a plan for my life. Perhaps only in a small way, but that’s good enough! I continue to thank him for his “Guardian Angel!” We found her! Debbie is a librarian. She lives in one of the 3-story condos across the lake. She said, “I was on the phone when I saw a big splash, then saw you. I know the lake, knew you were in trouble and couldn’t get out. So, I rushed out and drove my car to your place, calling 9-1-1 on the way.” God bless her! I claim God’s promise in Psalms 91:11, “For he will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” God kept His Word!

When I looked up, I saw six blue uniformed first responders. As they put me into a waiting

Along the Road Hollie Tatnell Grave In the 500 block of Wheeler in the city of Hearne is a one grave cemetery--with the body buried in the middle of the street.

The lone grave is marked by a sizable oak and two plaques set in an almond-shaped median. The first marker reads: “COME YE BLESSED”. The second: “TO THE MEMORY OF ‘OUR MOTHER’ HOLLIE TATNELL 1859 – 1911”, and below that, “MRS. GEORGIA E. GARTER Washington D.C. ANDREW L. HUNTER M. D. Marlin, Texas”.

Hollie Tatnell was born a slave in Texas. Upon her death in 1911, she was buried in Hearne’s colored cemetery, which had allegedly originated as a slave burying ground. Hollie would have been one of the last people interred at the cemetery as it was closed in 1912.

When developers purchased the land in 1947, families of color in the neighborhood were forced to exhume and rebury the remains of their ancestors in the cemetery. The only family that refused to budge was Hollie

Tatnell’s children, Georgia and Andrew. The developers, eager to move forward, had to construct a median around Hollie’s diagonal grave.

In 2007, the median received a sign from the Texas Historical Commission, denoting it as a Historic Texas Cemetery despite only containing the remains of one person. “This single grave,” it reads, “serves as a reminder of the area’s early African-American community and of the sanctity of burial grounds.”

Vimeo is best suited for people who prioritize high-quality content over whatever happens to be trending. Short films, animation, informative pieces, and in-depth journalism are all at home here. The consistent quality of Vimeo’s offerings is a breath of fresh air after wading through YouTube’s sea of hit-or-miss content, though you are unlikely to find the latest viral videos on Vimeo. Mustard Seed Moments by Wes Altom

The Power of Praise The story of Paul and Silas in prison at midnight (from Acts 16) holds some powerful, but often overlooked lessons. A mob quickly formed against Paul and Silas, and the city officials ordered them stripped and beaten with wooden rods. They were severely beaten, and then they were thrown into prison. The jailer was ordered to make sure they didn’t escape. So, the jailer put them into the inner dungeon and clamped their feet in the stocks. Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening. Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off! The jailer woke up to see the prison doors wide open. He assumed the prisoners had escaped, so he drew his sword to kill himself. But Paul shouted to him, “Stop! Don’t kill yourself! We are all here!” The jailer called for lights and ran to the dungeon and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

Happily Ever After Begins Here Premier Wedding and Event Venue

I think the earthquake moment so grabs us that we miss a couple of things. First, take notice of how bad their circumstances were—severely beaten, inner dungeon, painful stocks. Second, their response? PRAISE! We don’t read of them asking for rescue or focusing on their PLIGHT. They were focusing on their GOD…and that appears to have generated quite a response that changed their circumstances. Could you stand for things to be shaken up a bit in your life? Praise His name, and may His power be revealed in marvelous ways. From the song “Praise the Lord,” a portion of the chorus: For the chains that seem to bind you Serve only to remind you That they drop powerless behind you When you praise Him.
