Cypress Creek Lakes Resident Feature

Barb & Bil Corder

Barb and Bill Corder at the Rio Grande in Big Bend, Texas.

W

ith five children and seven grandchildren, Barbara and Bill Corder are your typical retired couple. They love to travel to the cooler, less humid climates during the summer having visited the upper East Coast, West Coast, upper Midwest states and the Rockies. Historical places, including museums, preserved homesteads and mansions are high on their list to visit and their style is to pre-plan trips. But when by happenstance they come upon something exciting like the International Chainsaw Sculpture Contest in Wisconsin—well, that just makes their trip that much better! The Corders moved to Cypress a couple of years ago and decided to stay in an apartment while their home in Cypress Creek Lakes was being completed. One day they noticed several feral cats hanging around their

8 February | March 2016

complex. Having trapped, spayed/neutered and released (TNR) cats for several years, they knew they could help these cats, too. TNR has been practiced in the United Kingdom for decades as a humane way to keep freeroaming cat populations in check. After the kitties are “fixed,” Barb and Bill hold them in a “kitty condo” within their apartment for several days to ensure they are faring well after surgery. After one particular TNR, Barbara was reaching into the condo to feed a cat she eventually named Sunnie. The cat jumped out and began rubbing against her arm and purring. Barb knew this kitty needed a home and should not be returned to the outdoors. So began her search to give Sunnie a real home. After visiting several rescue groups within the area, they felt a tremendous connection with a group called Loving Arms Pet Placement (LAPP). Sunnie was accepted into

their program and the Corders welcomed another foster cat into their home from LAPP. Loving Arms is a foster program meaning they do not have a physical location—rather they depend upon people to house pets in their homes until a loving “forever home” can be found. Barb and Bill showed the foster kitties at Petsmart on Highway 6 & FM 529 and also at Unleashed on Barker Cypress at Tuckerton and eventually their foster cats were adopted. Barb and Bill are fun-loving people and very dedicated LAPP volunteers. They foster kitties, help set up for adoptions at PetSmart as well as help with fundraisers (yard sales, FFA Market/Craft Show, and selling raffle tickets, etc.) We are very blessed to have such wonderful residents living in our neighborhood.

Cats’ Wish List

What is LAPP? Loving Arms Pet Placement (LAPP) is a 501(c)(3) that was organized to help address the huge problem of stray and abandoned animals in the Cypress area. Should an individual rescue an animal, LAPP gives them an alternative to taking the animal to a shelter. If the rescuer agrees to provide the basic needs, LAPP provides the veterinary care needed to get the animal healthy for adoption (spay/neuter/vaccinations/heartworm treatment, etc.). Then the foster shows the cat or dog at PetSmart or Unleashed stores. The animal’s photo is posted on LAPP’s web site as well as on petfinder.com. How Can I Adopt? Adoption events are held every Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the PetSmart store located in Copperfield. 7050 Highway 6 N, Houston, TX 77095 How Can I Help? Designate LAPP as the recipient (Charity name is Scout S Honor Rescue) and use these websites when shopping: GoodShop.com and AmazonSmile.com LAPP is always looking for fosters and adopters. An interested foster/adopter can view animals needing such on their web site. Donations for our yard sale are very welcome (kitchen items, toys, small furniture items are very saleable. Just call Barb and Bill for pick up). How Can I Become a Foster? Visit the LAPP web site to complete an application for adopting or fostering. Meet & greets and home visits are arranged to insure a safe environment. Sometimes folks do not recognize a situation within their home that could be an issue. Volunteers with LAPP can suggest corrections to make sure the welfare of the cat or dog is addressed.

Come Sit A Spell! A

s the days grow longer and the weather milder, there is nothing better than time spent on the patio or deck after a long day of work. Just lounging by yourself or with family and friends and enjoying spring weather before the heat of the summer months set in. So what are you lounging on? Are you in a cushioned wicker chair or a molded plastic chair bought at a Walmart sale last year? If you get confused over what is the best furniture for your patio and for your comfort, the answer is right before you—in your home. Do you love your indoor furniture—does it make you comfortable and capture your style? If the answer is yes, then look for outdoor furniture to duplicate what you have indoors. Is your interior design sleek with clean lines or do you prefer rustic wooden styles with character and weight in each piece? Looking closely at your home furnishings will help you zero in on what you will really enjoy in your outdoor settings. The traditional look all the way, wood is always a great choice for outdoor living. InternationalCaravan

For The Birds?

Maybe Not... But they are a Playful Way to Dress Up the Garden

S

omething new and exciting in bird house and bird feeder design—modern lines and new materials. Most of us can justify our purchase by thinking birds are also into our sense of style. Bird houses today are really just the latest thing in garden ornamentation. Small and unique—the houses fit nicely into our smaller yards. Or crafty and big—they show our Texan style. Bird houses without the modern lines have that distinct “cottage-y charm” and add a little whimsy to our yards and gardens. You can put them on a post, hang them on a wall or fence, from the eaves, or up in a tree. There are literally hundreds of styles being made, and many have a distinct “country” flavor. But whether or not they’ll attract birds is another matter. Ask an expert birdwatcher and they might tell you most birds wouldn’t be caught dead in a birdhouse. The usual ornamental birdhouse you purchase in a store won’t necessarily attract birds. But that doesn’t mean we don’t love and appreciate birds in our yards. They do have many good qualities such as eating bugs and cheerfully singing. And their behavior is fascinating. If you are trying to

H

appy 2016 and welcome to what I envision will be another great year for Cypress Creek Lakes. Our holiday decoration contest was a huge hit. Five winners received Lowe’s Gift Cards ranging from $25 – $100. The winning entry was on Carson Field Lane. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to everyone who decorated their home. You really lit up our neighborhood with all your beautiful and fun adornments. We look forward to our largest event, the Rodeo Kick-Off/BBQ Competition on March 5th! Games, BBQ, trophies, give-a-ways, dinner, and dancing, you do not want to miss out on this full day event, but you do need to RSVP to receive your tickets. Our Cypress Creek Lakes Scholarship Program deadline has been extended until February 12, 2016. We are awarding two $2000 scholarships to graduating seniors from CCL. The scholarship winners will be announced at the Rodeo Kick-off Event, one will be a merit based scholarship, and the other a service based scholarship. Go to our website to download the Sam Nachin scholarship forms and follow the instructions to apply. Just a reminder: The CCL Board of Directors uses four methods of communicating news to our residents: 1. We send out periodic email announcements. Do we have your email address? Register for a web account at CypressCreekLakes.org to make sure we can reach you with important news. Don’t worry. We don’t spam. 2. We post news on our website: CypressCreekLakes.org 3. We post news on our Facebook page: Facebook.com/CypressCreekLakesPOA 4. We snail mail, but rarely. This is expensive and, for the most part, we only do it when our governance rules require it.

O

ne of the opportune times for reading to children is just before bed. They’ve settled down after a long day of playing and are content to sit quietly and listen, perhaps aware that each book delays bedtime a little longer. These titles are recommended based on their nighttime themes and will breathe fresh air into the typical nightly lineup. Visions of the moon and stars and children pulling up the covers might just make your own child’s descent into dreamland that much more peaceful. Awake Beautiful Child by Amy Krouse Rosenthal; Illustrated by Gracia Lam (McSweeney’s, 2015) Ages 2-6

Follow along in a day of the life of a young boy in this charming book with delightful illustrations that evoke a midcentury nostalgia. Rosenthal is a wordplay master, creating threeword phrases that begin with A, B, and C, respectively. This boy’s busy day includes multiple walks outside, adventuresome play inside the house, a birthday The House in the Night by Susan party, and a trip into town. The Marie Swanson; Illustrated by bedtime routine is provided in Beth Krommes (Houghton Mifflen detail, and perhaps the most Company, 2008) Ages 2-4 comforting phrase is written for Inspired by a selection from the child falling asleep: “Alive. The Oxford Nursery Rhyme Book, Beloved. Content.” Enjoy the Susan Marie Swanson has written clever phrasing, but also be sure a nested story that gives readers to look out for the hidden objects a sense of the vast scope of the that begin with A, B, and C. universe around them. Within a house a girl finds a book that leads her imagination on a nighttime journey through the stars. There she finds that even in the deepest dark light still glows. The black and white scratchboard illustrations by Beth Krommes are peppered with hints of gold to a stunning effect that made this title the Caldecott Medal winner in 2009.

30 February | March 2016

Kitten’s First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes (Greenwillow Books, 2004) Ages 2-6

Touch the Brightest Star by Christie Matheson (Greenwillow Books, 2015) Ages 4-8

Sunset hues deepen to reveal the night sky on Matheson’s watercolor drenched pages, and she uses cut paper collage layered over top to capture creatures preparing for nightfall. This book requires participation from its reader, asking for stars to be tapped magically into the sky and for deer and owls to be pet gently as they retreat to go to sleep. Children can also swipe a shooting star across the page with the same motion they’d use on a smart phone, only this requires that extra and crucial ounce of imagination. Older kids will also benefit from a mini biology and astronomy lesson in the back of the book.

The kitten in this sweet tale from Kevin Henkes has spotted a full moon for the first time and believes it is a bowl of milk. She tries to chase it, even climbing a tree and jumping into a pond when she sees its reflection, but she never gets any closer. She returns home wet, tired, and bedraggled to find that a bowl of milk has been set out on the porch just for her. Henkes captures the magic of nighttime and the comforts of home with his gouache and pencil illustrations in this 2005 Caldecott Award winner.

The book cover images in this article are copyright of the respective publishers and artists, as noted in each review.

Go to Sleep, Little Farm by Mary Lyn Ray; Illustrated by Christopher Silas Neal (Houghton Mifin Harcourt, 2014) Ages 2-4

As a young girl prepares for bed, she thinks of all of the farm and woodland animals going to sleep all around her. A bee goes to sleep in a rose, a bear finds a log, foxes have their den, and rabbits sleep in a heap. Ray’s singsong rhymes are a joy to read, especially those that add a little whimsy, like the pocket going to sleep in the skirt. Neal’s artwork is done in hues of blue and red, capturing a gorgeous summer twilight as the girl drifts off to dreamland. Vincent and the Night by Adele Enersen (Dial Books for Young Readers/Penguin Group, 2015) Ages 3-5

Vincent is a baby who is far too busy to go to sleep. He plays music on the cello, builds a pond for a frog, does magic tricks, and sings country music karaoke. The clever and surreal aspects of this book rest in the idea that night is a black blanket which Vincent unravels and uses to create all of his adventures. Enersen accomplishes this by mixing photographs of baby Vincent with fanciful black ink drawings for his exploits. This delightful and imaginative story is a reminder that even the most active children eventually fall asleep. Emily Anderson is an avid reader, art enthusiast, and former academic and public librarian. She and her family spend a lot of time reading in Cincinnati, Ohio. Reach her at eabookreviewer@gmail.com.

By Inja Stanic f you love music and you want to learn how to properly play an instrument or sing a song in tune, then you understand the importance of having a good teacher. A competent instructor can kindle the passion that you have for music and mold you into a fine musician. There are many factors to consider before searching for the right person who can work with you and your abilities. Whether you are looking for vocal or instrumental lessons, finding the right teacher may include more challenges and legwork than you were expecting. Private music instruction is an unregulated field. Check for professional certifications such as NCTM (Nationally Certified Teacher of Music). You may find many music teachers who are immensely talented but who are not very good at teaching others and vice versa. Contact friends and acquaintances as well as post inquiries on neighborhood bulletin boards to find who others are using in your area. Rely on experiences that these people have had and use that information to assist in making your decision. Find out about recitals and attend them. Listen to the teacher and students performing. This helps you gauge the level of involvement the teacher has with the music. If you are already at the intermediate level, then you are able to see if the teacher fits with your concept of music and if you are able to learn what you had envisioned. A good rapport with the music teacher is important. Before selecting anyone, you should ensure the idea of music and his or her notion of music match yours. This enhances the process of learning because you are able to better relate to the instructor. If you both have the same concept, the classes are much more enjoyable and you will more than likely be able to learn quite a lot aside from the regular lessons. Arrange an initial interview so you can judge interaction between you and the teacher. Communication is essential. Although some lessons may be challenging, the teacher should leave you feeling uplifted and excited to reach the next level.

Marilyn D. McGuire, P.C.. M ATTORNEYS AT LAW Find out if the logistical factors suit your convenience. These include the time of day as well as cost of the lessons. Many people think that these factors can be adjusted later but it is necessary these be sorted out right from the very beginning. Ask for their cancellation policy and how they prefer to be paid (cash, check, credit card after each lesson or monthly, etc.). Some teachers offer a discounted or free first lesson to further help you make an informed decision. If you are a beginner, a good teacher is essential to give you the correct foundation in music, and if you are an advanced learner, then it becomes even more necessary to find the right teacher. A good music teacher guides and instructs you on all the essentials of becoming an accomplished musician. A great teacher listens to your desires and develops a partnership that assists you in reaching your musical goals.

For the Birds… continued from page 12

and will attract the birds you want without much trouble. Heck, in most cases what you feed is more important than what type of feeder you have. There are probably more types of bird feeders on the market than there are types of birds that will come to the feeder. Be sure to hang feeders in safe places away from cats and squirrels. You also need a way to keep the seeds dry and easy for birds to reach. February is National Bird-Feeding Month. The designation was created to educate the public on the hobbies of bird watching and feeding. February is also the month for The Great Backyard Bird Count. You can contribute by watching for birds in your own backyard, for as little as 15 minutes over the four-day period (February 12 –15). See gbbc.birdcount.org to learn more and access free downloads for the project. Whether you count birds or not, take some time this month to enjoy what nature has to offer. Even if you don’t have a feeder or a bird house, toss out some bird seeds on your patio or deck and feed our attractive feathered friends. Not only do they share this world with us they also make it a more beautiful and interesting place to live.
