Manvel High School Percussion to perform at The Midwest Clinic
The Manvel High School Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Louis Boldrighini has been invited to perform at The Midwest Clinic, an International Band and Orchestra Conference in Chicago. The annual Midwest Clinic is the largest of its kind in the country, showcasing world class ensembles, educators, and performances.
The students rehearsed their music for two months; then recorded and submitted selections for consideration by The Midwest Clinic at the beginning of March. Selected groups were notified in April. “It is an amazing honor to be selected to perform at the prestigious Midwest Clinic,” Boldrighini said.
The students will perform in front of a national audience of musicians and educators. “It is very exciting,” added Boldrighini. “The Manvel High School Percussion Ensemble is proud to represent Alvin ISD and our community. This is something that the students and I will remember for the rest of our lives.”

Ford’s Drive 4 UR School campaign was a huge success for the Alvin ISD Education Foundation. On Saturday, May 2, 2015, the Alvin ISD Education Foundation, students, parents and community supporters turned out to take test drives in a new Ron Carter Ford vehicle. With the Alvin ISD Education Foundation board members acting as salespeople, the program which was sponsored nationally by Ford Motor Company, provided $40 to the foundation for every driver that got behind the wheel.

Pearland ISD earns top grade in Children at Risk rankings
and Advanced Placement.
Pearland Independent School District boasted 100 percent of its schools earning A’s and B’s and five schools among the top 100 in the Houston area, according to recently-released Children at Risk 2015 rankings.
Of the 21 district campuses ranked, 16 received an A ranking – making Pearland ISD the largest Houston-area district with only A and B scores.
The local nonprofit organization examines public schools in the eight-county Houston region, ranking them on an A-F grade scale primarily based on State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness reading and math scores.
A grades were for schools at or above the 75th percentile, while B grades were for those at or above the 55th percentile. In addition, the analysis considers annual student progress on state tests and the relative scores of low-income students. This year, Children at Risk ranked 870 elementary schools, 315 intermediate schools and 163 high schools.
In Pearland ISD, only Turner College and Career High School and PACE Center were excluded from the rankings – TCCHS being a new school with insufficient data from Texas Education Agency and PACE being an alternative campus. In addition to examining student scores in reading and math, the Children at Risk study took into account campuses that helped low-income students succeed academically, gains in test scores from the previous school year and college readiness through participation rates and scores on SAT, ACT To Advertise Call 281-488-7422

Kelly Hestand, an administrator with 23 years of educational experience has been appointed as the principal for the new Shadow Creek High School, set to open for the 2016-2017 school year. The Alvin ISD School Board approved the committee selection on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at their monthly school board meeting.
“The Shadow Creek High School principal position drew extensive attention from applicants across the state. Alvin ISD received more than 73 applicants for the position and we are confident that Kelly Hestand’s diverse background and experiences at multiple high schools, and her advanced knowledge of upper level mathematics curriculum will allow her to achieve incredible outcomes at Shadow Creek High School,� said Alvin ISD Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, Allen Roberts. “As a believer in lifelong learning, I’m driven by a commitment to help students grow as individuals and to build a campus culture with high expectations of success.� Opening this new campus is truly an honor and I look forward to partnering with parents and community members to provide our students with limitless opportunities focused on helping each child achieve their goals,� Hestand said. “Leadership Pearland” is a program run by the Pearland Chamber of Commerce that is a gateway for individuals with goals to become more involved in the City of Pearland and hold leadership positions to be able to achieve those aspirations. The program consists of a total of eleven events that center on learning about areas such as City, County, State and Federal government, economic development, education, emergency response, and other key aspects of the Pearland community.”
The Leadership Pearland class encountered the “long arm of the law” from the City of Pearland, Brazoria County and the State of Texas. This was the eighth event out of eleven total in the Leadership Pearland class program. This had always been a long anticipated day on the schedule since it gets you behind the scenes to places that are not normally accessible to the general public.
Overall, it was a great day learning about the different branches of law enforcement and how they protect and serve the Pearland Community. Thank you to all the law enforcement that risk their lives every day to keep us and our families safe. Registration is now open for Nature Camp 2105
Nature Camp is a fun and educational day camp for children ages 7-12, hosted by the Brazoria County Parks Department with lots of help from the Cradle of Texas Master Naturalists. The camp will take place at Camp Mohawk County Park, nestled among the pine trees along Chocolate Bayou near Alvin. Hands-on activities are conducted by the Master Naturalists, who are expert at bringing together fun and informative sessions to entertain and educate inquisitive youngsters.
Nature Camp is 9 a.m. - noon from June 29 through July 2. This half-day camp takes full advantage of cooler summer mornings before temperatures make outdoor activities uncomfortable. At a cost of only $30 per child, Nature Camp is an affordable option for almost every family.
All programming is centered on nature studies and environmental stewardship and involves both information and hands-on activity. Children will learn about birds, habitat, and fly-ways; they will experience the diversity of insect life and the wonder of aquatic habitats by actually capturing and examining the tiny creatures sharing their world. Reptiles are a special and very popular subject, as is a hike along the parkís trail system, where guides introduce campers to various local species of trees and vegetation. While not a truly “nature” subject, basic archery instruction is provided as both a fun activity and an introduction to the mental and physical discipline essential to many pursuits. Nature Camp is both fun and informative. Space is limited to only 30 participants - pre-registration is required. The Districts have awarded a contract to build temporary ball fields for your use on a first come, first served basis. Alvin Community College’s Diagnostic Cardiovascular Sonography program offers free Cardiovascular Ultrasounds to anyone who is interested in participating. The scans are performed by students in the echocardiography and vascular Sonography program. The ultrasounds are supervised by registered faculty and include a complete echocardiogram or vascular ultrasound study.
Alvin Community College does not provide an interpretation of the scan, however, a copy of the scan can be provided for a donation of $10.00 per requested CD. The scans are considered non-diagnostic since they are performed by students, however, if the faculty member sees anything that requires further evaluation the participant will be informed to see their physician.

Outdoor Recreation If youíre nuts about nature like we are and interested in discovering new ways to play with opportunities to improve your skill level and explore outdoor pursuits that are available just beyond your front door.† Join us during one of our interpretive activities at a City of Pearland facility near you. Our parks and recreation department has teamed up with Texas Parks & Wildlife Department to conduct a series of nature based activities that include camping, wildlife viewing, hiking/ biking, fishing, geocaching and much more. Introduction to Geocaching Learn how to use a GPS unit to find hidden treasure in the outdoors. The presenter explains the basics of operating a GPS unit, and then helps participants use it to find geocaches already put in place by other geochachers in the activity venue. Adopt-A-Beach efforts didn’t stop with cleaning up public beaches. Strong winds and hail passing along the coast on April 17 left behind quite a few dead and injured seagulls, pelicans, and other shore birds. Many of the birds suffered head trauma from the hail or broken wings from the high wind gusts. Volunteers collected about 60 of the surviving birds and transported them to local wildlife rehabilitators for help.

Volunteers registered at Surfside totaled 359; Quintana registered 130 participants; and Schlumberger, with their own threemile section of Follett’s Beach, registered 400 employees and family members. In all, the 889 volunteers in Brazoria County picked up 32,925 pounds of trash along a 17-mile stretch of public beaches.

Children/Youth entering grades 3-8 are invited to sign up for the 9th Annual Summer Music Camp sponsored by the Bay Area Chorus and the Bay Area Youth Singers. “Jammin’ in June” morning session offers singing and beginning guitar, violin, piano, voice, and playing in the chimes and percussion ensembles. Led by master teachers, the camp also has lots of high school and college music students on board to keep the campers in the right place at the right time, and always having a great time. Campers perform Friday night in a concert featuring all the skills they’ve learned during the week. It’s amazing!
The teaching staff includes Brenda Varvoutis, Carol Colvin, and Raul Dominguez directing the choirs (there’s a special choir for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade boys to offer special help in using their new tenor and baritone voices). Criss Boganegra and Melissa Medina lead the voice classes, with special attention to sight-singing for the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Christina Bires teaches beginning violin, Deborah Edwards leads the Orff/Percussion classes, Allie Wagner teaches beginning guitar, and Carol Barwick leads the beginning piano class. All are teachers in Clear Creek, Pasadena, Goose Creek, and the Austin school districts. “Broadway Bound” is the afternoon session from 1 to 5 p.m. Campers will rehearse and present a mini musical at the end of their week of singing, dancing, and acting. Highly acclaimed Theater Under the Starts Educational Director, Ms. Rozie Curtis, leads the afternoon session with the help of Ms. Brenda Varvoutis.

And the dancing continues... What meant to last only for 4-5 months is now in its 6th year, as the participants do not want to stop dancing. The sessions are not built on one another, so if you miss a few or just want to start, you can catch up quickly.
The dances are held at Congregation Shaar Hashalom on Mondays, from 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm. June dates are 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th. $4/session or $35/10 sessions for CSH members and $5/session or $45/10 session for non-member will cover expenses. Everyone is welcome to join the group - meven if you haven’t attended before. Dancing is an excellent cardiovascular exercise while having fun! Recently had a tune-up done on my two 16 year old units by AirCon for the first time and must say I received excellent service by Walter. He was very thorough in doing the work and diagnosing issues with one unit cooling. I felt he was very honest in explaining issues and provided me a detailed estimate for replacing one unit in the future. I appreciated that unlike other contractors that have serviced my AC he did not try to sell me a new unit after only 5 minutes on the job.
