T H E 2022 S K I S E A S O N I S O F F I C I A L LY H E R E Wolf Creek Ski Area in Southern Colorado is ready for the upcoming 2021-2022 ski season after a busy summer of projects ranging from maintenance and construction to technological upgrades and improvements. Wolf Creek, already known for being a leader in sustainable business practices, constructed an onsite EV charging station. The charging station offers five connections with one being Level 3 (fast charge - 100 amps) and the remaining four being Level 2 (medium charge – 30 amps). A two-year installation project of a 750,000 gallon water tank to assist with snowmaking and fire suppression also began this summer. Wolf Creek’s website, WolfCreekSki.com, and ecommerce platform is currently under construction, but will debut mid-November with a modernized, full width format that offers fewer clicks and easier access to information for users. Additionally, Wolf Creek’s ecommerce platform will be upgraded to the same modernized, full width format offering rental reservations as well as tickets, season passes, gift cards, ski school and retail. Also, two new Prinoth Snowcats were purchased to add to Wolf Creek’s extensive fleet of grooming equipment. Wolf Creek Ski Area is known for the deepest natural snowfall in Colorado with the average of 430 inches every season, giving it the reputation among ski areas as “The Most Snow in Colorado”. Wolf Creek is located in the Southern San Juan Mountains, specifically near the summit of Wolf Creek Pass. Wolf Creek’s location offers a unique microclimate that lends to its reputation of prolific powder days, making it a fair bet guests will be able to catch a fat ski day while visiting. A typical ski season at Wolf Creek runs from Early November through early April each year, but has been known to be the earliest to open in the country in early to mid-October.

Wolf Creek stands out from other ski areas in Colorado not only for being family owned and operated, but for also having affordable lift tickets and lesson options. Wolf Creek also offers convenient and complimentary amenities including paved parking, shuttle services, a groomed Nordic Track and a full schedule of fun races. A number of Local Appreciation days are scheduled throughout the season as well as during early season openings. A special discounted all-mountain lift ticket is available on these days – everyone is considered as a local. Specific dates can be found on the Wolf Creek website. College students are also offered special ticket days. Students with a valid college ID and a current, printed class schedule can purchase a discounted lift ticket during the select College Days.
Wolf Creek Ski Area offers 1,600 acres of alluring terrain for all types of skiers and boarders. The base elevation is 10,300 feet with a summit elevation of 11,904 feet. Skiers and boarders can enjoy a two-mile long run with Navajo Trail; Wolf Creek’s longest run. Ten lifts service 1,600 incredibly beautiful acres of terrain with a diversely formulated lift network, ranging from high-speed detachable quad chairlifts to rolling conveyor lifts. A full description of lifts with statistics can be found by visiting WolfCreekSki.com. A weekly event everyone in the family can enjoy at Wolf Creek is the Fun Race Series. The weekly race series gives friends and family the opportunity to race against one another in a modified giant slalom. Races begin at 11:00 a.m. and are set up in a dual race format. The race is at no cost to participants with a lift ticket and open to all age groups and abilities with an award ceremony at 3:30 on the main sun deck. The top three racers in each age bracket win Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. Adding to Wolf Creek’s uniqueness is the delicious homemade food found in the main day lodge. Guests can find a perfectly grilled Wolf Burger, homemade Santa Fe style green chili, a great gourmet salad bar, as well as a daily hot special. The Continental, Wolf Creek’s espresso bar at the top of Treasure Stoke has specialty coffees, hot chocolate and homemade pastries. Picnickers can bring their lunches to Base Camp, which has a number of drinks and snacks to supplement a brown bag lunch. The mountain eateries will be open as staffing will allow for this season. As with all other Colorado ski areas, Wolf Creek is challenged with the lack of employees for the many jobs available. Guests can stop by Treasure Sports for mountain necessities as well as to great t-shirts, ball caps, stickers, mugs and many more items to commemorate their ski adventure to the Southern San Juan Mountains. Wolf Creek’s eStore also has t-shirts and souvenirs, in addition to skis and snowboards, for guests to purchase if they are not able to visit in person. For more detailed information visit WolfCreekSki.com or call 1-800-SKI-WOLF for the most up-to-date information and snow conditions.

Rescue. Save. Repeat.
Rugby’s Rescue House, a Non- Profit licensed home foster based dog rescue, was founded in December 2019. Rugby’s is based out of Pagosa Springs which is located in SW Colorado. The foundation is managed and operated by a small group of kind hearted, hard working, dedicated individuals with a passion for fostering dogs and in educating and nurturing the communities from which the dogs are primarily coming from. Since opening its doors, Rugby’s Rescue House has successfully saved and rehomed over 200 dogs. With the longevity of the foundation being a priority, Rugby’s expects and looks forward to saving many more. Rugby’s geographical location demands urgent focus in rescuing dogs from surrounding Tribal Land (Jicarilla Apache in Dulce, NM and the Navajo Nation also located in NM). The priorities in these communities are to spay/neuter, vaccinate, and treat any medical cases as they come in - before looking for their forever homes. In addition to the local area work, Rugby’s Rescue House has adopted dogs all over the United States. Though caring for and rehoming will always be a priority, Rugby’s Rescue House has long term goals to cultivate animal care education in the communities they serve. They hope to do this by continuing to raise money to fund free spay and neuter clinics for those in need. A wonderful relationship has formed between Rugby’s Rescue House and those living on surrounding Tribal Land. Members of the Reservation community will continue to be educated on the importance of spay and neuter, as well as, proper vaccinations and deworming. Dog Owners in these areas are now reaching out to Rugby’s Rescue House for help and/or advice on proper animal care. This is a highly preferred alternative to what is often seen; dumping dogs to fend for themselves in desolate areas where many die or become ill and spread disease. Beyond these problematic scenarios there are also cases where dogs form feral packs and become a community threat to other dogs and people creating a nationwide problem one that can not be ignored. If you are interested in learning more about Rugby’s Rescue House, helping out, becoming a foster parent, volunteering at fundraising events, or becoming a monthly sponsor please visit our website rugbysrescue.com and follow us on Facebook and Instagram @rugbysrescue. This is also a good place to look for new puppy arrivals and available adoptions. Remember #adoptdontshop

Pagosa’s own Queen Bee “Without using the stabilizing agents found in most commercial products, it’s challenging to make lotion; temperature, humidity, and the melting point all impact your final result, and those things change all the time,” Lynne explained. “People aren’t used to using simple pure oils, but they are typically free of chemical additives which are needed to bind the water to the fats in lotions. They are much more hydrating, and you are getting 100% chemical-free moisture.” She encourages you to look on your bottles and read the ingredients. If you don’t recognize them, you might consider switching to organics.
ynne Killey has created quite the buzz around her Queen Bee organic line of skin care products. It all started back in 2003 when Lynne wanted to make a few products for herself. She messed around with formulas and made some fun products including bath salts and lip balms. Lynne started gifting friends with some of her creations and unwittingly created demand for more. Queen Bee was formally launched, offering botanicals that nourish your skin and spirit. All Queen Bee products are made by hand, using natural and organic ingredients. The Queen Bee motto, “made with love,” represents the philosophy of founder and president Lynne Killey, each bottle or jar of product is made with attention to quality ingredients, harmony with nature, and care for the people using them. Early on, as Lynne discovered that you had to have a hazardous materials license in order to obtain the chemicals used in most commercial beauty products. At that point Lynne made a commitment to use organic ingredients in her line, even though the production process would be more difficult and more expensive.
Vitamin K Serum Nourish your skin with the power of ten pure flower and plant botanicals naturally infused with high dose vitamins. This redness reducing, capillary strengthening Vitamin K Serum is like a big organic salad for your skin.
Lynne embarked on an eye opening journey that involved lots of research and becoming Aveda-trained and licensed esthetician. She can be found brewing up skin care at the spa most days, and spends a lot of her time enjoying life in Pagosa. All of her products are formulated and manufactured here in town with the help of a network of worker bees. Queen Bee has a gorgeous facial studio here in Pagosa. You can book a facial with her or get a personalized skin care consultation! Visit QueenBeePagosa.com for directions, online booking, and spa menu.

GET A PULL - FEEL THE TUG Imagine a winter sporting event where slalom meets rodeo and the adrenaline-pumping excitement of ski racing combines with the horsepower and freedom of the cowboy lifestyle. Skijoring is a sport that combines skiing and horsemanship and has been around for over a hundred years. In the early 1900s, skiing behind horses was a popular activity throughout many areas of northern and central Europe. Skijoring made its debut in the Stockholms Winter Games of 1901 and appeared in the Chamonixs Games in 1926. In 1928 skijoring was included at the first Winter Olympic Games in Saint Moritz. From 1915 to 1930, equine skijoring made its way to North America where it laid down roots in New England and in the western Rockies. Today, skijoring continues in Saint Moritz at White Turf. Equine skijoring has become a growing sport in the western Rockies, and competitions can be found almost any weekend during the season which runs from early- January to mid-March.
