Gaming News

Bingo Played by Students at William Penn University Iowa - Noisier than a pep rally would describe the laughter, enthusiasm and fun at the William Penn University Food, Fun and Bingo night held this September at the student cafeteria on the William Penn campus. The William Penn University Advancement office organizes a themed food night during the fall semester and again during the spring semester. The events always include rounds of bingo, and this year, the fall food theme was diner food night. Students and staff enjoyed diner foods such as burgers, fries, shakes, corn dogs, onion rings and more throughout the evening. “This is one of our favorite events,” said Marsha Riordan, vice president of advancement and development at William Penn University. “I am not sure who has more fun – the students or the staff.” Riordan manned the prize table along with Joe Reagan who serves as director of corporate and community relations at William Penn University. “The SGA (student government group) helps us with the prizes,” Reagan said. The table was filled with gift bags, many different William Penn logo items and even included a big screen TV as a prize for one of the black-out Bingo rounds. The cafeteria was filled with students playing Bingo. Staff and community volunteers served as spotters to check cards and present prize tickets to the students. (IG)

Man Accused of Rubbing Produce on Buttocks & Putting It Back on Shelves

Weird News

Virginia - A Virginia man is facing charges after he allegedly grabbed produce at a Manassas store, pulled down his pants and rubbed the food items on his bare buttocks. The suspect then allegedly put the tainted produce back on the shelves, according to The Associated Press. Michael Dwayne Johnson, 27, was arrested Saturday afternoon at the Giant Food Store after an employee called 911 about destruction of property. The employee told officers Johnson was allegedly seen “picking up produce, pulling down his pants, rubbing the produce on his buttocks, and replacing the produce back on the shelf,” according to a police report obtained by The Smoking Gun. Johnson was arrested inside the supermarket and charged with two misdemeanors: indecent exposure and destruction of property. According to the police report, store employees had to destroy several pallets of produce presumably tainted by Johnson’s bare buttocks. (IG) 6

from Rotten Tomatoes

Rating: PG Genre: Comedy, Kids & Family, Science

In the tradition of amblin classics where fantastical events occur in the most unexpected places. The magical adventure tells the spine-tingling tale of 10-year-old lewis who goes to live with his uncle in a creaky old house with a mysterious tick-tocking heart. But his new town’s sleepy façade jolts to life with a secret world of warlocks and witches when lewis accidentally awakens the dead. Critics Consensus: An entertaining PG detour for gore maestro Eli Roth, The House with a Clock in Its Walls is a family-friendly blend of humor and horror with an infectious sense of fun.

This throws off your body’s schedule for the week. If you’re having trouble waking up on Saturdays or Sundays, swap those in for a healthy routine like going for a walk or taking in an exercise class. Just get moving.

It’s the hormone of sleep – of darkness. It is a naturally occurring hormone that comes out in the evening to help your body come down from the day. When your body is exposed to blue light (screens) 1-2 hours before bed, we do not allow melatonin to its function.

MODERN MOM

PUMPKIN

CARVING

by MORGAN SIGLER

PUMPKIN CARVING

T

Nothing can get your family in the Halloween spirit like carving a pumpkin together. To help ensure your children enjoy a fun and safe pumpkin-carving experience, we’ve put together this list of tips, tools, and general advice.

1. Pick a pumpkin that’s good for carving. • Avoid a pumpkin that feels heavy for its size. This can indicate thick walls that could be difficult to carve through. • Avoid any pumpkins with soft spots, which can indicate rotting. • Ask your child to help you “inspect” the pumpkin to be sure it doesn’t have any nicks or cuts that may make it vulnerable to spoiling.

2. Take precautions when carving. • Don’t rush. • Use small, controlled motions. • Choose a location that is well lit and a work surface that’s sturdy. • Keep your hands and carving tools dry. • For added safety, leave the pumpkin top on so you don’t put your hand inside the pumpkin and risk cutting it. Never let a young child carve a pumpkin. If you allow your older child to create a jack-o’-lantern, supply them with age-appropriate carving tools and supervise them closely.

16

THE BINGO NUGGET // OCTOBER 2018

B

3. Choose an easy design.

5. Clean up quickly.

To help keep your child’s interest, choose a design that’s easy to carve and won’t take long. Consider downloading a few pumpkin templates ahead of time, and let your child pick the one they like best.

Pumpkin carving is fun, but it’s also messy — especially when kids are involved. Slippery pumpkin flesh or seeds may end up on the floor and cause a fall. To help minimize this risk, lay down newspaper or a disposable drop cloth under your work area and pick it up as soon as you’re done carving.

4. Keep your kid occupied. While you’re carving, keep your child busy (and out of harm’s way) by letting them decorate a small pumpkin all their own. From covering the pumpkin in glitter or adorning it in rhinestones to transforming it into their favorite character, there’s a wealth of kid-friendly ways to decorate a pumpkin.

6. Skip the candles. Burning candles are a potential fire hazard and they can be especially dangerous to kids. This year, try illuminating your pumpkin with an LED tea light instead of a candle. Or, give your pumpkin extra pizzazz with a special effects battery operated light.

It just may be your birthday month if you’re born before the 22nd and you’re so ready to come into a new year as you’re at the center stage of it all. You have a lot on your mind and people are energetically ready to hear your thoughts on pressing matters. You will find yourself in creative ventures this month.

Are you feeling the pressure coming from all around you? No, it’s not coincidence – it’s the stars. Things are incredibly unclear at this moment in your life and you just want answers to what has been on your mind lately. Don’t worry though, the stars are looking out in your best interests.

What a time to shine this month! You are ready to turn those dreams into a reality and it starts by setting small, attainable goals along the way. You will be asked to take part in large group activities and experiences – even taking a leadership role. Spend time with friends and make new ones along the way.

You are receiving a ton of positive energy and you’re just trying to figure out how to channel it. Write it down, make your goals a priority and remember to include your loved ones in the decision making. These opportunities don’t just come every day and you have been working hard the entire year for this.

The energy fields are pulling you towards embracing different points of view than your own. You will be learning from this difference, go at it with an open heart and mind. This will help you be able to really go into the end of 2018 with a brand new outlook on life and go for what you want.

It’s as if you’re coming out of hibernation and you’re renewed with all of the possibilities that are at your feet. Others may not notice that you’re back in the game so be gentle with them as they take some time to get used to you being around. Take some time to figure out your new space.

It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day – Nina Simone and that’s how you’re seeing life this month. You’re just feeling good. You have developed a new found sense of self-awareness especially when it comes to your relationships. You’re finding everything is effortless.

You’re being tested in every which way no matter how hard you try to run away. Towards the second half of the month, and after a lot of soul searching, you will see the death in something that has been bothering you and a rebirth into something much greater than you anticipated.

You’re ready to get out and on the town this month, dear Gemini. Your inner social butterfly is ready to fly off and see the world as much as you can. You’ll be right in your natural rhythm of getting things in a festive mood for as many appearances in your home entertaining guests.

Just like the crab, you are so much more comfortable in your shell of a home. While you will surely have your own visitors coming and going your way, you just really want to be at home for it all. You will have to be sure to communicate with people on a much more emotional level when it gets too much.

The universe is pounding at your door and it’s not leaving until you come out to party with your natural, creative gifts. You are going to be appreciated so much in every avenue of your daily life this month. Your daily routine will be in hyperdrive and you’re going to find yourself accomplishing so much.

You are really going to have to put in effort this month to truly listen to those around you. While you may want to go left, you need to make sure everyone else that is in your ship know which direction you’re going. October will be full of situations where your message won’t be coming across as full as it could be.

That’s what a new study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association Oncology (JAMA Oncology) reported a study performed by researchers from The University of Alberta and The Dana Farber Cancer Institute. They found that breast cancer patients who have high muscle mass have a greater chance of beating the disease than those who have lower muscle mass. They looked at CT scans of the abdominal region of over 3,000 women with stage 2 or 3 invasive breast cancer to determine if they had muscle loss, poor muscle quality, or excess fat. They then compared the death rates among these groups. 1/3 of the patients that reported muscle loss had a mortality rate of 41%; patients with the highest level of excess fat – 35% death rate. When you combined both of these factors, a whopping 89% death rate was seen. While body size (BMI) and cancer survival has been of great interest in study over the last few years – BMI doesn’t take into consideration the body’s actual composition of fat vs. muscle in the body which are large variables in determining one’s health. The women in the study ranged in age from 18-80 with the median age of 54.

What else can strength training help battle?

Diabetes, heart disease, osteroporosis, and various diseases. With

1 in 8 women in the United States (about 12%) will

develop some form of invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime, you can see why so much effort is pushed. In 2016 alone, an estimated 246,660 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed along with 61,000 new cases of non-invasive 24

their teenage years. I have three tweens myself, a 9 year old girl and twin girls that are 11. I have noticed this past summer that the twins were starting to get a little acne here and there so I decided to have the “skin care talk” with them once school started. I sat them down and told them why it is important to keep their face clean and how just splashing water on their face wasn’t going to cut it. Your tween’s skin is extremely sensitive, definitely stay away from cleansing brands with harsh chemicals. They can rinse their face with a gentle cleanser such as Clean & Clear Essentials Foaming Facial Cleanser Sensitive Skin. If they are starting to have some signs of acne or blackheads they can use an anti-acne cleanser such as Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash. They really only need to be washing their face in the evenings before they go to bed unless they have been active

Since this month is Halloween, try this fun DIY pumpkin facemask! This pumpkin facemask recipe is easy to make: • ¼ cup organic pumpkin puree • 1 egg • 2 teaspoons raw honey for dry for normal skin • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar for oily skin 1. Simply mix the pumpkin puree and the egg until well blended. If you have dry or normal skin, add the honey. For oily skin, add apple cider vinegar. 2. Wash your face and then spread the mask all over your face, avoiding the eye area. Let sit for 15-20 minutes before rinsing. Follow with a moisturizer. 2018 OCTOBER \\ THE BINGO NUGGET
