Vegan Popcorn Balls MAKES 1 DOZEN POPCORN BALLS • 9 cups popped popcorn • 2 cups roasted, salted nuts of your choicewe love cashews (optional) • 1 cup dried cranberries, raisins, or cherries (optional) • ½ cup coconut oil OR 4 Tbsp vegan buttery spread • 1/2 cup agave nectar • 1 tsp salt • 1 tsp cinnamon • 1/2 tsp nutmeg • 1 dash cayenne • 4 Tbsp Coconut Sugar • Additional coconut oil or oil spray

Spray or grease a cookie sheet with coconut oil and set aside.

In a large pot, over medium high heat, stir together coconut oil or buttery spread with agave, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cayenne.

Simmer for 10 minutes while stirring often with a wooden or silicon spoon. Turn off heat and fold in popcorn, as well as nuts and fruit.

Stir just until coated and turn onto cookie sheet. Spread lightly with the back of spoon and let cool until you can comfortable handle the mixture. Form into balls and store in an airtight container.

BEAR ATTACK IN LATE AUGUST, a video of Baylor

University’s sophomore wide receiver, Ishmael Zamora surfaced on the internet. In the video, Zamora was beating his dog with a belt. The dog, owned by Ishmael Zamora was backed in to a door, crying. The video was horrific.

Days later, Baylor’s interim football coach, Jim Grobe made the following statement: “Our football program does not condone this behavior by anyone. We are deeply saddened by it and have worked together with the University to hold Ishmael accountable for his actions.”

What does accountability look like when you’re Baylor? Well, if you’ve followed the recent sexual assault and subsequent Pepper Hamilton investigation, you can probably guess- not much.

In Zamora’s case, he missed the team’s first three games. He was still permitted to attend and take part in football practice.

According to a statement released by BU, the school and it’s athletics administration have imposed corrective actions against the sophomore, after its review of the animal abuse incident that resulted in a Class “C” Misdemeanor citation from City of Waco Police. Those actions were to include 40 hours of community service, undergoing counseling, and relinquishing the dog to an animal-friendly home.

“I’m sorry for my actions,” Zamora said.

“I’ve owned the dog for 20 months, he’s perfectly healthy and I love him very much. In the moment, I lost my temper trying to discipline him. I’ve been through training with a dog trainer to help me learn new potty training tips.”

Well, eventually, the dog did end up going to live with Zamora’s relatives in Houston. Given that they are related to the abuser, we have serious doubts that the dog will ever be truly safe. What about holidays? Spring break? Who decided that this was an animal- friendly home? Zamora?

Mark Rhoades, Baylor’s VP and Director of athletics spoke on behalf of the university when he said that “Ishmael’s behavior toward his dog is disheartening, and is not condoned.”

SADLY, THIS SEEMS TO BE EXACTLY THE KIND OF BEHAVIOR THAT BAYLOR CONDONES. THIS TIME, IT WAS JUST CAUGHT ON TAPE. Sadly, this seems to be exactly the kind of behavior that Baylor condones. This time, it was just caught on tape.
