I had a few black and brown jigs and a jar of Uncle Josh pork rind trailers to attach to the jig hook for added attraction. My selection of plastic worms was also quite simple and consisted of a few black, motor oil and purple; some big, some small, some with curly tails and some with just plain olâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; straight tails and a few Tru-Turn hooks. I tossed in a couple of Rat-L-Traps, a Bomber Model A, and a few spinnerbaits (usually white, yellow or black) and I was ready for a 0-E? Ĺ&#x2039;?45:3 1B1: 4-0 >;;9 5: @41 tacklebox for some sun screen lotion, a sandwich, thermos and a hand-towel. Fishing was easy back then and the bass seemed to really like most of the baits in my box. Those baits that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t produce just didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make it back ;A@ 2;> @41 :1D@ Ĺ&#x2039;?45:3 @>5< 521 C-? simple.

Over the years I noticed that my :110 2;> :1C -:0 05Ĺ&#x160;1>1:@ .-5@? ?@->@ed reaching an addiction and pretty soon I had a few plastic wash tubs lin5:3 @41 Ĺ&#x152;;;> 5: 9E 3->-31 -:0 1-/4 C-? Ĺ&#x2039;8810 C5@4 <8-?@5/ .-5@? 88 @41 .-5@? were tucked away in Ziploc bags and labeled properly so I could get to what I needed with no problem. My small tacklebox was replaced by two tackleboxes, followed by an assortment of BIG tackleboxes and then a collection of large heavy duty tackle bags that held a vast assortment of plastic boxes.

The large plastic tubs of worms in my garage multiplied like rabbits and in no time I had to move the lawn mower and garden tools out to make more room for tubs. I prided myself in leaving no stone unturned as I continA10 @; .A580 9E Ĺ&#x2039;?45:3 8A>1 /;881/@5;:

What I failed to mention is that while the collection of plastic worms was growing my addiction for other @E<1? ;2 Ĺ&#x2039;?45:3 .-5@? C-? -8?; >1-/4ing a boiling stage. Pretty soon my wall was covered with peg boards and one board would have crankbaits, one would display spinnerbaits, topwater .-5@? Ĺ&#x2039;8810 -:;@41> .;->0 653? ;2 -88 types and sizes were on another board and various types of hooks, jigging spoons, lead-heads and deep-diving baits. A pegboard on the ceiling had all of my Alabama Rigs hanging down like beautiful Christmas tree ornaments. I even moved my wifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pickup truck out of the garage to make more room for peg boards and tubs.

Having all of these baits within easy reach made me sleep better at night but there was a problem. How do I take the proper baits out in the boat with me?

The answer to this was simple â&#x20AC;Ś buy more plastic boxes and Ziploc bags. In no time at all I had more plastic worms in my boat than Academy has on their walls and when I added -88 ;2 @41 ;@41> ?@AĹ&#x160; 9E .;-@ ?1@ -.;A@ 14-inches deeper in the water. Who cares if the boat struggles out of the hole â&#x20AC;Ś the issue is having the right bait when I need it! Well all of that ?;A:010 <>1@@E 3;;0 .A@ -? C-? Ĺ&#x2039;?45:3 4-0 @>;A.81 =A5/78E Ĺ&#x2039;:05:3 @41 color and size of the worm I wanted to use. The solution â&#x20AC;Ś label and add 9;>1 ,5<8;/ .-3? &41 <8-: C-? Ĺ&#x2039;:-8ly starting to come together.

Then I started having problems with not having the right crankbait or spinnerbait size or color in my plastic boxes. I carried about 4000 baits but it seemed like I just never did have that key color in the boat. That color was always hanging on the garage wall. No real problem here, I just purchased more plastic boxes and soft-sided bags @; ?@;/7 -005@5;:-8 ?@AĹ&#x160; 5: @41 .;-@ E

now all of the front and rear compartments were full of baits and the boat set another foot deeper in the water. I did manage to leave enough room in the boat for two lifejackets and my raingear.

About this time things started getting REALLY serious!

Somewhere in all of this addiction I realized that I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the proper rods, reels and line to use many of the baits I was carrying so I purchased many more of these items than I had planned. A quick inventory showed 14 freshwater baitcasting rod and reels, 10 rods with open bail reels, 12 heavy-duty rods with reels that were loaded with braided line and 10 comboâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s that were 01?53:10 @; ?<1/5Ĺ&#x2039;/-88E Ĺ&#x2039;?4 @;<C-@1>? crankbaits and jerkbaits. Those were the ones in the garage .. There were about 20 of various types in the boat rod storage compartment. How did this get so out of hand!

It was about this time that I started carrying a large plastic bag that was strictly for those baits I expected @; Ĺ&#x2039;?4 @4-@ 0-E &45? C;A80 ;.B5;A?8E keep me from having to look through all of my Ziploc bags and boxes in the boat if I was in a hurry to change lures.

What a great idea!

A few trips later I realized that now I had 13 of those carry-on plastic bags, and it was obvious that I would probably be bringing more with me 1-/4 @591 C1:@ Ĺ&#x2039;?45:3 E :;C 9E boat was sitting dangerously low in the water and it was time for a change.

This addiction to massive amounts of baits, boxes and bags was sinking my

boat!

I have to admit that the disposal of many of these baits was not only 05Ĺ&#x2018;/A8@ .A@ 1D@>1918E <-5:2A8 4-0 - tear in my eye at more than one of our garage sales as I watched some of my prized possessions depart with a new owner. Times were tough but I needed to have courage and stay the course.

Well to make a long story short, my life has changed drastically since I have eliminated all of the excess Ĺ&#x2039;?45:3 r.-33-31s 2>;9 9E 3->-31 and boat. My lawn mower and garden tools regained their proper place in the garage and my boat doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need the two hydrofoils and a special 6-bladed prop to get up on plane. My wife is even talking to me again since I moved her truck back in the garage.

Recently I even started a new program similar to the AAA called BLB (Buy Less Baits) that has been very helpful to other unfortunate anglers that are trying to eliminate their addiction to /;881/@5:3 Ĺ&#x2039;?45:3 1=A5<91:@

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really not that hard but it does take commitment.

It also can be a teaching moment for our youth. If we trash the lake and roads then more than likely our children and grandchildren will too. However, if we dispose of our trash/ litter properly then the youth around us will usually do the same.

Winter wonders that warm the heart W

elcome to winter in Zone 8 or 8b. Having lived in this zone my entire life, what I know is that if you want blooms from November through -:A->E 5@ >1=A5>1? - 85@@81 1Ĺ&#x160;;>@ ;: your part. There are a few exceptions and they are wonderful.

Sedum, and there are at least four or more hundred varieties, but they may not all be available locally and will need to be ordered online. Most popular: Autumn Joy. The Problem: For many years I have tried unsuccessfully to plant the Ĺ&#x152;;C1> .;D1? -/>;?? @41 2>;:@ <;>/4 with anything that would live for even an entire season. Having had wonderful success with Autumn Joy sedum for the last several years. It occurred to me that a cold hardy succulent might be what we needed. In the fall of last year, the soil in the window boxes got ?@5>>10 A< -:0 Ĺ&#x2039;8810 C5@4 /A@@5:3? 2>;9 the plants in the succulent bed. They lived, prospered, and bloomed with so little care that it was amazing. If you have a place outside that does not get

regular water and has sun all the time, you might try a Stonecrop. Autumn ;E 4-? <5:7 2AFFE Ĺ&#x152;;C1> 41-0? -:0 Autumn Fire is a deeper red and tighter growth habit. They are succulents, so they hold water in their leaves, they >1<>;0A/1 .E .>1-75:3 - <51/1 ;Ĺ&#x160; -:0 sticking it in the dirt, and they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t freeze back (at least not so far). They are known to be hardy all the way to Zone 3 where the winters are vicious.

All varieties of sedum have a couple of things in common; plump, waxy leaves -:0 5:@1>1?@5:3 Ĺ&#x152;;C1>? 1B1> 4-B1 3>;C: -:E Ĺ&#x152;;C1>5:3 <8-:@? C5@4 81?? trouble.

Tradescantia Pallida, purple wandering Jew, Moses in a boat, Nuns in a boat or Purple Heart, can survive or even prosper with little or no care, as long as some moisture or mulch is present. I have read that they are invasive, but have had no problem containing them. If you have an impossible place where nothing seems to survive, or just a place where ground cover or color is needed, this may be just what

There is an easy to grow member of the olive family called, Winter Jasmine. It blooms usually in January with long branches of star shaped yellow blossoms. If you want to control the spread of growth, you should prune it after the bloom period ends.

Unlike most jasmine, it has no scent.

Very easy to grow and should be established in partial or full sun where it can take over an area. It will make a large low shrub with arching canes radiating from the center. If it has been a hard winter this shrub will warm your heart.

Beautiful blooms can be produced inside all winter if you force some Amaryllis, Crocus, or paper white narcissus. These and other bulbs can be found at most box stores like Home Depot, Samâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, Tractor Supply, Walmart, your local feed store or online. They usually have complete

instructions for forcing into bloom on the box or bag. Some even come with planting containers and medium.

Last, but never least, are the ever increasing varieties of Poinsettia. The blossoms are not really petals but .>-/@? : @41 r2;> C4-@ 5@p? They look great and I always look forward to having at least one or two in the house or near my desk at work for the entire Christmas season. Water well by soaking and let it dry out before watering againâ&#x20AC;Ś.... then repeat the process. If possible, put them where they will get indirect ?A:8534@ ;> ?@>;:3 ->@5Ĺ&#x2039;/5-8 8534@ &41 stems are brittle and easily broken, but with care they should last for a couple of months. Shelby County Bass Anglers claim 3rd straight TABC state championship on Falcon Reservoir

By David Koonce The Shelby County Bass Anglers traveled to Lake Falcon Reservoir September 30 through Oct 1st, to defend their back to back state championships from 2015 and 2016, against 26 of the best bass clubs in the state of Texas.

A club team consists of four twoman teams per club to represent the best Anglers from each organization.

Last year, the SCBA became the only club to win back to back championships in the Texas Association of Bass Clubs state championshipsince the inception of the organization 40 years ago.

Congratulations to the eight team members that represented the SCBA and East Texas with their prestigious three peat of the title.

There is the aesthetics being degraded, safety hazards, navigation hazards, and obstructions @4-@ 45:01> Å&#x2039;?45:3 Texas has restrictions and regA8-@5;:? 2;> <-??5B1 Å&#x2039;?45:3 31-> 2;> both commercial and recreational Å&#x2039;?41>91: -8571 : @41 /-?1 ;2 />-. and perch traps there needs to be a degradable escape panel. All gear must be marked with a buoy or tag. There are limits to how long gear can be left without subsequently retrieving it or checking it. There are limits to how

much gear an individual can set at any given time. Texas also has what is known as the crab trap round-up when - ?9-88 C5:0;C ;2 @591 5? /8;?10 ;Å&#x160; @; Å&#x2039;?45:3 @; -88;C @41 /81-: A< ;2 01>1lict gear â&#x20AC;&#x201C; usually for about a week in mid-late February. This program has been well received by the public and is responsible for having removed 10â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s of 1000â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s of lost / abandoned traps over the years.

There is currently no program or clean-up period that allows the removal of derelict freshwater passive Å&#x2039;?45:3 31-> &41>1 ->1 ?;91 813-8 5?sues with removing the gear even if by all obvious appearances it is either lost or abandoned and has been there for quite some time. The issue is that it can still be considered personal property. Not being of a legal background it is my understanding that by having the closed crab trap season (usually a week) then whatever is left behind can be considered abandoned and legally removed.

(i.e. gear that was left behind for some reason like boat trouble and the person never going back out to retrieve it once repairs had been made, laziness, medical issues, etc.). Reasons for gear being lost may include buoy lines having been cut by passing boat propellers, damaged buoys sinking, storms rolling the gear and displacing it, and vandalism. The end result is that there is a lot of gear out there that basically no one longer claims or has long since been left behind.

At the end of the day, sixteen teams went home with paychecks. Taking the top spot was the duo of James Waldon and James Ausmus with 22.13 lbs. After Ausmus successfully completed the random polygraph, the pair walked away C5@4 - ^UVTT <-E0-E )-80;: >1<;>@10 @4-@ @41E /-A34@ @415> Ĺ&#x2039;?4 ;: @41 1031 ;2 grass with Texas Rigs and Wacky Worms. He also reported that the bite was good for them until about 11AM. Coming in second was the team of Casey Burleigh and Josh Rodgers. Casey reported catching their impressive bag of 21.42 lbs on 6th Sense Lures C-15 crankbaits and V&M football jigs. That bait combo must have worked because the two took home $1000 Saturday.

Third place paid the team of Chris King and Carlos Mudd $880. They caught @415> .53 Ĺ&#x2039;?4 C15345:3 [ [W 8.? 1->8E 5: @41 9;>:5:3 -:0 /4;?1 @; .>5:3 41> @; @41 scales early to ensure she was released healthy. After doing this, King and Mudd See Outlaw, page 8
