A Letter to Our Readers The horror! The horror! – Kurtz, in Joseph Conrad’s The Heart of Darkness Okay, granted, not the most uplifting literary reference with which to open the November edition of a fine natural magazine, one devoted to positivity, healing, and all things holistic, spiritual, and metaphysical. If anything, it’s probably best suited for an October issue – Halloween, Day of the Dead, all that there. It is, however, a good way to describe the pall cast over the collective consciousness by the most brutal, soul-sucking, painful political campaign ever, aided and abetted by what Those Who Know describe as the most disruptive, tumultuous, and butt-kickingly intense alignment of energetic and planetary influences since the midSixties, minus the peace and love.

There’s supposed to be a lesson in every experience, no matter how unpleasant. Sometimes, the lesson is simple – this experience was truly awful, and we should never, ever do it again. There is a positive side, though. At least the horror has reacquainted many of us with prayer. Repeat after me: Please, God, let it really be over on November 8. Please… Amen. –Michael Abedin

by Dr. Joe Vitale

It’s not either/or. It’s both. One evening I watched a documentary called Still Bill, on Bill Withers, the singer-songwriter famous for such tunes as Grandma’s Hands and Lean on Me. In one scene in the film, he was congratulated for not “selling out.” Bill paused and then said, “Look. We are all entrepreneurs. What’s the best sign we could ever put in our store? The greatest sign we can hang in our window is SOLD OUT.” I loved his clarification. Bill wrote songs true to him, and along the way he sold millions of them. He didn’t “sell out” – but he surely “sold out.” Singer Bono once said, “Selling out is doing something you don’t really want to do, for money.” I don’t want you to pursue money for money’s sake, but to instead pursue your passion and make money from it along the way, so you can continue pursuing it. In other words, focus on your passion, create a product or service true to you, promote it honestly and relentlessly, and then enjoy the profit from your work.

any people new to the Law of Attraction confuse material gain and spiritual awakening. They think it’s either/or – either you attract the money or you attract the awakening, but not both. Obviously, that’s not what I teach. In my books, such as The Awakened Millionaire, I explain that you want to profit from your passion, and that being true to yourself in business is also being true to your spiritual path.

Dr. Joe Vitale is the globallyy famous author of numerous bestselling elling books, including The Attractor Factor ctor and Zero Limits, a star in the hit it movie The Secret, founder of Miracless Coaching and The Secret Mirror, inventor entor of Hypnotic Writing, and a man an ‘on fire’ to live his passions and help lp the world. His music CD’s are available le at www. AllHealingMusic.com His main website is www.JoeVitale.com oeVitale.com

Sounds healthy and wise, doesn’t it? You can do this, too. It’s knowing your calling, passion, life mission, and being at peace with success as you express yourself in the marketplace. It’s not about “selling out” but being “sold out” while doing what you love. I know people who deceive themselves into thinking they can’t make money doing what they love, because they would be too focused on the material. They completely forget that the material is the concrete form of the spiritual.

Judging stuff as not spiritual is spiritual snobbery. It’s a self-deception, it’s an ego trip. I’m not talking about hoarding or whoring, but about being comfortable living well, as you do well. As Milton Friedman said, “Rich or poor, it is good to have money.” Anyone who wants to awaken needs to embrace all aspects of life, and quit judging parts of it – or themselves – as bad.

We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience. – Pierre Teilhard de Chardin It doesn’t take much character to judge anything as lowly – it takes much character to see the good in all of life. Again, you can use the Law of Attraction to attract cars and cigars, or spirituality and enlightenment – and you can also use LOA to attract all of it. The only limitations are in your mind. That said – what would you welcome into your life? As Arnold Patent, one of my favorite teachers, once said, “You can have it all!” But – will you accept it? Joe Vitale offers greater understanding of the principles of the Law of Attraction in his Miracles Coaching program. www.MiraclesCoaching.com His latest book, The Awakened Millionaire: A Manifesto for the Spiritual Wealth Movement, is available at Barnes and Noble and other bookstores, Amazon.com, and www.AwakenedMillionaireAcademy.com

BUMPER STICKER PHILOSOPHER Pierre Teilhard de Chardin’s Greatest Hits by Skip Looper, Philosophy Editor In a world where philosophical musings are, often as not, perused on the bumper of a passing car, one stands out above the rest. You know the one: We are not Human Beings Having a Spiritual Experience We are Spiritual Beings Having a Human Experience Right up there on the bumper sticker charts with Visualize World Peace (and its variant, Whirled Peas), it’s still not as good as a personal fave – CHANNELING: Just Because They’re Dead Doesn’t Mean They’re Smart – but far more well travelled. Another New Age slogan coined by someone named River Moonbeam or Aphrodite Unicorn or some such, right? Wrong. It’s the work of prominent Jesuit priest, paleontologist, and mystic Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, who managed in his lifetime to get both the Catholic Church and the scientific community ticked off at him. Born in 1881, he called his final shot – he said in 1955 he hoped to die on an Easter Sunday, and departed that very day, three weeks later. He travelled the world, worked on the dig that discovered Peking Man, postulated Genesis as an allegory and St. Paul as a Gnostic, saw the Earth as a single cell, and argued for evolution as a physical and spiritual process that would culminate in a complete unity of all consciousness with that of the divine – the Omega Point, as in Alpha and Omega. “No evolutionary future awaits anyone except in association with everyone else,” he wrote. Wired magazine once said his ideal had been realized by the Web – a depressing thought if you read the comments that follow most online content – but he called that one, too: Whether one welcomes or deplores it, nothing is more surely and exactly characteristic of modern times than the irresistible invasion of the human world by technology… invading like a tide all the places of the earth and all forms of social activity. That would take a pretty big bumper, as would: Someday, after mastering the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love – and then, for a second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire. But there is one that would make a pretty cool sticker: Growing old is like being increasingly penalized for a crime you haven’t committed. Watch for it, on sale here soon.

Whether you got here five minutes ago or are a long-time Texan (ten minutes ago, at least), you have to know the origins of chicken-fried steak to pass the citizenship exam. Seems a waitress in a roadside diner in West Texas in the 1940’s, according to a 1970s Austin American Statesman article, took an order from two customers – one wanted chicken, one wanted fried steak. She jotted them down on one line, forgetting to insert a comma. The short order cook saw Chicken Fried Steak, shrugged, and breaded up a hunk of beef. The rest, as they say, is history. The story circulated worldwide, even getting a mention in Texas Monthly, until the Snakesman writer admitted, decades later, he made the whole thing up for a deadline. (Deadlines do that to you, as this piece demonstrates.)

That’s a factoid. But wait – isn’t a factoid a little snippet of information? Nope. It’s something resembling a fact that’s really not, a piece of incorrect but believable information widely circulated until it’s accepted as true, as explained by the inestimable Al Franken, former SNL comic and current U.S. Senator (who’d make a fine presidential candidate about now). That means the fact a factoid is a small fact is, in fact – a factoid. Harmless enough, until websites and antisocial media became the go-to source for instantaneous misinformation, and the ability to spread deliberate factoids (otherwise known as fibs) became the currency of the day. For rumormongers and conspiracy theorists, the sky became the limit, crisscrossed with chemtrails hovering over crop circles warning us about Illuminati clones. And that’s when Nelson Mandela died – in prison, in the 1980s. Seems enough folks still believe that, despite all evidence that he died in 2013, that it became known as the Mandela Effect, and the explanation offered was a simple one.

8

Wait for it… Yep. They must be remembering that from – you guessed it – a parallel universe. That would explain a lot, wouldn’t it? If, the reasoning goes, we’re all cooking on multiple burners at the same time, across the cosmos or just the other side of the veil – well, anything’s possible, and any reality you care to invent is true, somewhere. It’s a staple of surrealist writers like Jorge Luis Borges, in whose universes every moment holds the potential for every infinitely possible outcome, and choices made between them can be both awesome and terrifying. It’s also a go-to excuse for psychics and soothsayers when predictions don’t come true – it happened, but on the other side, in an alternate reality. Creating realities is also, of course, a staple of political discourse – or, now more than ever, discord. By the time this issue has been out a little more than a week, a train wreck of an election will, mercifully, be over, but the fun won’t. Truly fantastic factoids, bouncing around like pinballs, have built enough momentum to keep bouncing even after the smoke clears.

A parallel Thanksgiving. The Native People of this country are said to have had some fun outdoing each other with outrageous whoppers around the campfire. Here’s a good one – after their ancestors helped a ragged band of religious zealots survive the winter of 1621, the guests were so grateful they shared their later prosperity with the People, honoring their native lands and culture. Might not get many laughs. The People knew Truth when they saw it. Look into the eyes of the Legend Keeper in JD Challenger’s November cover, and you might see it, too. In a world where it’s become easy to create untruths anonymously and find a willing and supportive following, no matter how vitriolic and vile that parallel universe might be, Truth has become a precious commodity. Cherish it, nurture it, don’t be afraid to speak it – we’re going to need a lot more of it.

WAS MIKAO USUI – A NINJA? The truer true story of Reiki’s founder

by Michael Abedin Mikao Usui, the story goes, founded the healing art of Reiki in the early 1900s. He started out Buddhist, became Christian, and taught Bible History at the University of Chicago. His students asked him if he could bring someone back from the dead, or perform miraculous healings, so he spent twenty-seven years learning two new languages to research healing traditions of Christianity and Buddhism. Discouraged, he trudged up a mountain, fasted and meditated twenty-one days, had an epiphanous vision, and created Reiki. Tah-dum! (Roll credits.) Great story – and maybe not completely true. As it turns out, some researchers believe it’s a sanitized version dating to the mid-Seventies, when Reiki was first taught in mainland America by Mrs. Hawayo Takata, and the Eighties, when it was introduced to the public by her granddaughter, Phyllis Furimoto.

But, you might ask… Why would anyone mess with the history of a spiritual or healing practice? Happens pretty frequently, actually. Reading the biography of Edward Bach, creator of Bach Flower Essences, he sounds so saintly you’d half expect him to leave wet footprints from walking on water, when he actually liked turning a pint or two with the boys at the pub – and don’t even think about the historical accuracy of most holy texts. Spiritual histories are often written decades – even centuries – after the fact, by true believers who weren’t there but want to preserve (or embellish) the legend. In Usui’s case, there were pragmatic concerns. Seems Mikao had a few skeletons in his spiritual closet. Phyllis Furimoto, born and raised in the Midwest, created the Reiki Alliance in 1983 – the Reagan era, not a highpoint of liberal thought hereabouts. Usui’s past may not have suited the Reader’s Digest sensibilities of 1980s Middle America. What were his deep dark secrets? Get ready. He may have been kind of a shaman. Oh, a Samurai, to boot. Maybe even – a Ninja.

Head for the hills. Mikao Usui didn’t dance around a campfire with bones and feathers in his hair, but shamans from Siberia to the Black Hills connected with forces of nature by heading for high places. Scale the tree at the center of the world, maybe eat a magic mushroom, but if there’s a holy mountain handy – climb it.

10

Mount Kurama near Kyoto, where Usui journeyed, is a spiritual destination for practitioners of a centuries-old belief system predating Shinto in Japan. Shegundo embraces Taoism, esoteric forms of Buddhism like Tendai, even Tibetan influences. Kurama is said to be home to powerful kami, spiritual forces of nature. The great swordsman Yoshitsune learned his tricks there. Legendary twentieth-century martial artist, yogi, and Shinto priest Gogen Yamaguchi, The Cat, spent days fasting, undergoing intense physical training, and meditating under its waterfalls. Instead of a dispirited seeker of answers to a lifetime search for keys to healing, Usui was said to be shugenja – secretive practitioners of Shugendo, whose journey to enlightenment led them to test themselves, spiritually and physically, by fasting and meditating on rugged mountaintops, exposed to nature, and communing with kami. Sound familiar?

The Ninja thing. Some shugenja were also known as yamabushi, mysterious warrior monks living in the mountains, sometimes fighting against or alongside Samurai throughout feudal Japan’s history – rumored to be predecessors to the notorious ninja clans. Usui’s truest true history may never be fully documented, but that would make sense for an ol’ shugenja – or yamabushi – since they kept their practices, and sometimes identities, secret. Mikao Usui probably didn’t take ninja throwing stars and a black hood as he headed up Kurama, but he’s said to have been born Samurai – and wasn’t brooding on that mountaintop, any more so than a Native American warrior on a vision quest. Spiritual warriors don’t climb mountains because they’re there. They come to their endeavor with training, resolve, and faith there’s a pathway up the mountain and they’ll be led to it – and, one way or another, down again. Austin All Natural publisher Michael Abedin is an eighthgeneration Reiki Master Teacher in the direct lineage of Mikao Usui, and a long-time professional martial arts instructor. His Reiki Master Intensive, the Reiki of the Fire Dragon, Dec.9-11, is a grounded, technique-oriented class linking Reiki to martial arts, qigong, and yoga, incorporating many of the old traditions of Usui Reiki. Discounted pre-registration available. Phone interview and registration required: (512) 879-7299.

WATER, WATER, EVERYWHERE And plenty of ionized, alkaline drops to drink Ah, the holidays. Time to eat and drink things you know aren’t good for you. In the drinking department, that may mean getting into the spirit of celebration by tying into more celebratory spirits than usual – more cocktails or brews at parties, maybe the odd glass of champagne or eggnog. (Even one glass of eggnog could be considered odd.) Discretion and quality control helps – pay for your hooch tonight or pay tomorrow, the saying goes. But what about other liquids you pour down your throat all year you know aren’t good for you, but still toss down like, well – water. Marge Captain, hydration specialist, details the drawbacks to liquids that, year-round, often takethe place of, not just water, but ionized, alkaline water: t 4PGU ESJOLT BOE TQPSUT ESJOLT High sugar, sodium, and caffeine levels dehydrate the body, and over time can cause chronic dehydration and lead to serious problems like obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. They’re also acidic and bad for the teeth, contributing to cavities and gum disease. t 5BQ XBUFS Healthier than soft drinks, but pollutants have been found in America’s tap water since 2004, including high levels of prescription drugs not removed in wastewater treatment. Over half are unregulated and can legally exist. The public is starting to question the quality and safety of tap water – ask Flint, Michigan. t #PUUMFE 8BUFS Not necessarily healthier than tap water. It costs a lot more, and may actually be tap water – see if the label says “From the Municipal Water Supply of‌â€? Like tap water, it can contain contamination exceeding allowable limits. Plastic bottles also leach endocrine disruptors like phthalates and BPA, and are a serious environmental problem. It’s also slightly acidic, and can affect the body’s pH balance.

Ionized, alkaline water. There are more benefits to alkaline water than its alkaline pH. Its negative oxidation reduction potential (ORP) gives it antioxidant properties, fighting disease-causing free radicals that result in degenerated organs, bones, muscles, and joints, causing the body to age. Alkaline water inhibits excessive fermentation in the digestive tract, aids the body’s natural healing process, assists in the absorption of minerals – and, like almost everything, tastes way better than eggnog. Marge Captain is a hydration specialist in alkaline antioxidant water. For information, online resources – and FREE alkaline water – call (512)627-3585 or (512) 415-7669.

Sound Medicine by Erik k Dunton The highest goal of music is to connect one’s soul to their Divine Nature‌ – Pythagoras (569-475 BC) Einstein discovered that all matter consists of atomic material in constant motion, oscillating or vibrating. Quantum physics shows us that all matter is energy, and this energy is in a constant state of vibration.

Nothing is solid. Everything is vibration. Everything we know as solid is, in fact, vibrating energy. Sound, rhythm, and music are also vibrating energy, affecting us deeply, down to the cellular level. We can now readily demonstrate the effects of music and sound on all matter, including the human body. It influences our emotions, our brain patterns, and our wellbeing. Historically, music, rhythm, and sound have been used successfully as powerful healing mechanisms. Alongside other musical instruments, songs, drums, gongs, and singing bowls have been used in meditation, ceremony, healing, and ritual. The vibrations from these instruments travel from the ears, skin and bones directly into the brain and throughout the body, via the vagus nerve, permeating all of your cells and organs. When properly facilitated, music and sound have the power to heal – to make whole, in the truest sense of wholistic. They relieve stress, reduce anxiety, and create a feeling of wellbeing and inner peace. Numerous studies have demonstrated the health benefits of music, rhythm, and sound: t -PXFS CMPPE QSFTTVSF t 3FEVDFE IFBSU BOE SFTQJSBUPSZ SBUFT t 'FXFS DBSEJBD DPNQMJDBUJPOT t *ODSFBTFE JNNVOF SFTQPOTF t #PPTUJOH PG OBUVSBM PQJBUFT t 3FEVDFE DPSUJTPM BOE PUIFS TUSFTT IPSNPOFT t 4UBCJMJ[FE NPPE t $PVOUFSJOH PG DIFNPUIFSBQZ FòFDUT

Sound bath. A sound bath meditation is a full-body listening experience that’s an ideal tool for stress relief, worry reduction, pain alleviation, and stimulation of the glandular system. Due to its nature, a sound bath meditation resonates all cells of the body simultaneously in a powerful and effective way. Music and sound work at the cellular level, and have a profound, revitalizing effect on the immune and nervous systems to rebalance the physical, emotional, and spiritual bodies. Erik Dunton is a Restorative Musician and Motivational Drummer who feels music and sound have the potential to be a positive force in everyone’s life. The Artist of the Warrior JD CHALLENGER The creator chooses his own messengers. Your path is to tell the story of the Native people to those who do not know what has happened in the past, or what is still happening today. You make them see we are real people, and we are still here. – A Kiowa holy man’s message to JD Challenger

Buffalo-Thunder

JD Challenger is one of the top painters of Native Americans in the world. Once you’ve seen his work, you’ll never mistake it for any other. There are no teepees, doe-eyed maidens, or papooses in a Challenger piece. With few exceptions, JD paints one thing.

Warriors. Native Americans – especially Plains tribes, brothers to the buffalo – were among the finest warriors to walk the path of Spirit, something Challenger captures in their eyes, posture, and regalia. Quite an accomplishment for someone who’s not Indian. He allows as how he might have a bit of Cherokee in him, but his step-grandpa was fullblood Choctaw and that’s where Native culture rubbed off on him. “I was five, maybe six, and we’d sit under a peach tree and whittle – not really whittle anything, just whittle. Anytime I smell peaches, I still remember that.” Challenger saw a re-enactment of the Ghost Dance, and knew then and there someone had to preserve their stories, from their point of view. “Their history, not the white man’s version.” www.JDChallengerGallery.com

by Christina Allen We are in a time of great turmoil. Deep fears, based on an impending sense of scarcity, run through our communities – is there enough? Fears around who should have power, and who should not, are surfacing in our political dialogues. Our world is getting crowded and our paradigm is shifting. Many of us who are not feeling safe are pointing fingers and drawing lines in the sand. Circle the wagons, boys! We need to fend off those wolves.

But who are these wolves? The primary directive of the ego is to survive, at all costs. The ego is the operating system for the human body we inhabit. Implicit within its programing is a divisive sense of self that sees all others as competition. A great point in our evolution came when we started gathering in tribes and working together, as a collective. We switched from being sole survivors to being part of a complex, symbiotic collective that responds to, and supports, the needs of others for survival. While we’ve made progress, our continued struggles with race, creed, and gender indicate this divisive part of the ego still flourishes within the collective unconscious. Any small group that spends hundreds, if not thousands, of years together expresses genes that are of value to that particular tribe. Over time, any two populations that began from the same point of origin will begin to look different and think differently as they move apart. The amount of pigmentation in their skin, for example, or the shape or color of their eyes, may become dominant tribal features, depending upon their environmental challenges. Similarly, forms of connection to the Creator will evolve and change, as will the balances of power within the tribe. For many of us, when we look outside the comfort of our own communities, we see only the differences in others – and this instills fear.

Short shorts, Porsches, and fear. Every time we draw lines in the sand and define someone as different than ourselves, we step out of our hearts and into

16

the fear-based mind. Judgment gives us a rail to push against, creating apparent safety in an us and them. We all do it, all the time. Look at that girl in the short shorts, we hiss, or Who does that guy in the Porsche think he is? In truth, we feel threatened that what they are flaunting will draw our mates away from us, so we enlist our friends to help us shun them. Similarly, our communal fears and judgments drive divisions between tribes on a global level. We all share far more in common with each other than we do differences. Deep within most of us is a desire to live in peace. Many of us even pray for it. There’s a difference between praying for peace, however, and simply praying peace. Praying for peace is asking God to step in on our behalf. Praying peace is taking personal responsibility for finding peace within, and then holding that vibration as it extends outward in waves. If you truly want peace, look at your judgments.

What are you afraid of losing? Find the part of yourself that creates enemies from its own fear of lack. Sit with it, unpack it. It starts inside. Can you dismantle that fear instead of shunning another? We cannot have world peace until there is peace within the individuals in the world. Look at the wars you wage against yourself, everyday. Watch how you beat yourself up. Own that fearful wolf that lives within you. We are not an us and them – we are a species, a global pack, scrambling to survive… ourselves. Through our hearts, through compassion, we recognize our own fears in the eyes of those at our doors. Let’s embrace our differences, as creative diversity. Pray peace. Christina Allen’s work as an intuitive, healer, teacher, and founder and director of the Austin Shamanic Center combines a strong science background (BA Physics, MS Neuroscience) with decades of applied ancient spiritual wisdom (Master Yogi, Reiki Master, and profound Shamanic Healing based on Q’ero Indian traditions of Peru). Chi Kung and the Art of

Belly Breathing by Dave Whitley Chi Kung (often spelled Qi Gong) is an ancient Chinese practice over 4500 years old. Its purpose is the generation and circulation of Chi, or Qi, bioelectrical energy within the human body. Chi Kung is a meditative practice emphasizing conscious direction of bodily energy through breath control, mind intention, and body movement. Deep diaphragmatic breathing – belly breathing – is the fundamental method used in most Chi Kung systems. Sometimes called Zen breathing, it’s a relaxed form of breathing, visualizing inhalation going into the abdomen rather than the chest. (This is how babies breathe.) One purpose of Chi Kung is to increase the vitality and health of body, breath, and mind. In fact, pure Chi Kung practice considers all of these to be as one, since what occurs in the physical is a reflection of breath, spirit, and mind.

Meditating while driving. The body knows what it needs to be vibrant, strong, and healthy. Regular Chi Kung practice can put you in touch with the inner voice that guides you there. Belly breathing should be the foundation of any meditation, at the beginning of every session. It allows you to relax the body, focus the mind, and prepare for other meditation exercises for building stronger chi energy. Chi Kung meditation is useful for learning how to discipline mind and body so energy can flow through you in the most efficient, beneficial manner possible. With practice, relaxed mindfulness can become so natural you don’t have to close your eyes or assume a meditative posture – you can carry on normal activity, like walking or driving, without breaking concentration or composure. Relaxation is the essential aspect of all Chi Kung meditation. Physical relaxation goes hand in hand with stilling the mind, and a relaxed body and a still mind open the door for change. Once relaxation and stillness is internalized, Chi Kung can be used as a tool to reprogram or rewire the mind and explore the subconscious – and is a valuable part of the process of melting away dualism. Dave Whitley, the Iron Tamer, is a motivational speaker and strongman presenting Applied Breathing: A practical approach to Chi Kung, Saturday, Dec. 10 at Tao Health and Fitness, including introductions to Hoshin Tao Chi Kung, the Breathing Method of Wim Hof, The Iceman, and The Secret Smile. WHERE DID MY ENERGY GO? by Christopher Thompson Are you experiencing low energy, trouble sleeping, and weight gain, despite diet and exercise? You may have a sluggish thyroid. A sluggish thyroid – hypothyroidism – commonly effects women in their forties, often caused by pollution, contamination of food and water, poor nutrition, or genetics. Food and water contaminated with halogens, such as chlorine and fluoride, can interfere with thyroid hormone production (T3 and T4). t $IMPSJOF JT BEEFE UP XBUFS BT B EJTJOGFDUBOU t 4PEJVN IZQPDIMPSJUF BOPUIFS TPVSDF PG DIMPSJOF CFUUFS known as bleach, is used to disinfect food preparation surfaces, and sometimes foods themselves. t 'MVPSJEF JO NJOFSBM GPSN JO TNBMM BNPVOUT QSPNPUFT strong bones and teeth, but fluoride added to municipal water supplies is a different form that interferes with thyroid hormone production.

Iodine and selenium. Drinking non-fluoridated spring water and avoiding preprepared vegetables helps minimize exposure to halogens. Eating fresh vegetables is great for your health, but they’re often grown in soil lacking trace minerals like iodine and selenium. Iodine, needed to create thyroid hormone, is in spinach, dried seaweed, and plain yoghurt. If you’re not getting enough in your diet, supplement with nascent iodine, Lugol’s solution, or kelp extract. Iodine isn’t shelf stable – make sure your supplement is yellow to reddish brown in color to know it’s still good, and follow directions on the package. Selenium is needed to make thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), which stimulates the thyroid to do its thing. Sunflower seeds, raisins, and whole grains are good sources. Selenomethionine is the best form of selenium supplement, but be careful – selenium supplements can be toxic in relatively small doses. Up to 200 micrograms per day is the recommended dosage. There are many things that contribute to a sluggish thyroid besides genetic predisposition. Adequate protein is necessary to produce hormones, tricky for vegetarians who use soy as protein, since soy has been found to inhibit cells from absorbing thyroid hormone. Exercise is great for maintaining hormone production, but if you have hypothyroidism, exercise can exacerbate the problem and should be avoided until your hormone levels are back to normal. Acupuncture can be an effective way to stimulate your thyroid, and boost all hormone levels back to normal. Christopher Thompson, L.Ac (TX AC01446), has a strong background in biology and as a Certified Nursing Assistant, and specializes in endocrine disorders and sports injuries in his practice, Prickly Pear Acupuncture. TO CHELATE, OR NOT TO CHELATE IIff y you’re ou’re g going oing to to do do it, it, do do it it right right by Dr. Matthew Carpenter It’s becoming widely known that metal, chemical, and environmental toxins are harmful to homeostasis, the ability to maintain a consistent level of good health. It’s also known humans have increased ambient mercury levels in the air by a hundred times through mining, that birth rates are down and it’s more difficult to conceive healthy babies, that people living near polluted rivers have higher rates of cancer and other chronic illnesses, and that people are now aware of aluminum in their pans and deodorants, of toxic cleaning products, and of kids’ water bottles containing BPA. As a biologic dentist, I help people reduce poisonous metals from dental work – mercury, nickel, aluminum, cadmium, chromium, titanium, and unhealthy resin fillings with aluminum, hormones, and fluoride. Except for resins, these are heavy, base metals normally found deep in the Earth’s crust. In my office, we remove these metals while running IV-C (intravenous vitamin-C) therapy and providing acupressure, in the safest environment possible, using negative ion generators, metal-specific air filters, and activated charcoal air-conditioning filters.

First instincts, and the bouncer. I’m frequently asked how best to reduce metal in the body after mercury and other metals have been removed from the mouth. Although the first instinct is to begin flushing them out of the body with chelation therapy, it can only be effective in conjunction with reducing daily exposure to metals and toxins in food and water. You will literally pull toxins through your body, never reducing levels of poisonous metals, if you chelate or use medications or supplements to remove metals stuck in fat and connective tissue without limiting continued exposure from other sources. (This is why people see health benefits when moving to organic foods after removing mercury fillings and aluminum crowns – they’re allowing the body to catch up on taking out the trash.) The main “bouncer,” the antioxidant in the body that removes mercury attached to hemoglobin or thyroid cells or stops a virus from replicating after contracting a cold, is glutathione (GSH). Because of our current cultural abundance of toxins, most people have very low, deficient glutathione levels, as their GSH has been used up, making them more likely to get a cold or not heal from an infection.

20

The more you piggyback or support the body’s inherent processes, the better chance you have for results. One of the more highly researched, comprehensive, and safe metal-detox delivery systems is from Quicksilver Scientific of Lafayette, Colorado. I resonate with its approach to ramp up the immune system naturally, safely, and efficiently to support excretion with vitamin C, R-Lipoic acid, glutathione, natural binders for supporting elimination of toxins from the bowel, and phytonutrient antioxidants to maximize metal detoxification pathways through cellular phases of activation, conjugation and elimination. Dr. Chris Shade runs the one mercury-specific lab in the world, and is an expert on metal toxicity and elimination. Shade’s methods employ the highest efficiency delivery vehicle in medicine right now – liposomal delivery. Liposomes are made of phospholipids – the basic building block of cell membranes – with encapsulated nutritional compounds enclosed, making them more bio-available than other delivery vehicles like traditional pills and herbs. This means you actually get more of the product into your cells. It’s not a program heavily relying on herbs that make you feel nauseous, or pills you struggle to intake consistently in a day. Lysosomal gel is absorbed through the mucosa of the mouth and begins having an effect immediately, not an hour after you take it when the contents of a pill finally hit the part of the small intestine where it’s absorbed into your blood stream. There are no needles, IV’s, or unsafe chelation drugs commonly employed in traditional urine challenge testing or IV chelation therapy. I believe metal exposure is linked to decreased immune function, autoimmune illness, and increased potential for health problems. I think Dr. Shade’s system can be used successfully by most people desiring reduced toxic dentalrelated metal loads. Dr. Matthew Carpenter of Transcend Dental Health uses drill-free air abrasion, ozone therapy, natural alternatives to antibiotics, non-surgical treatment of gum disease, and consultations regarding the Detox Qube from Dr. Chris Shade’s Quicksilver Scientific to lower existing metal loads, including a panoramic x-ray for visualizing remaining metals in the oral cavity. 512) 255-3618, www.tdhtx.com

Holidays, fitness, and falling dominoes by Michael Abedin Humans are funny. Other critters know instinctively what to do for self-preservation and health, until they get domesticated and start acting like us. You won’t see wild animals celebrating from November until January, eating and drinking to excess, subjecting themselves to crazy levels of stress, and not exercising. Not to worry, though. Our big ol’ brains know exactly what to do when a new year creeps in and the hangover wears off.

specialized nerve cells, acting like a circuit breaker to prevent further damage.” If something gives, it’s often a joint, even for highly trained and well-conditioned pros. “Injury to a joint also inhibits muscles crossing over the joint, a process called arthrogenic muscle inhibition. It’s common after joint surgery, making rehab difficult.”

The dominoes fall. Overcompensate. Switch the channel from binge to purge. Start a new life tomorrow. Drop a bunch of old habits, then look down and realize there’s more to drop – and it comes by the pound. Whether you run out and get one of the carefullymarketed big-box gym memberships that use your bottom line to rebuild theirs every January or get high-tech duds and hit the trail, going from dead stop to full tilt boogie has some drawbacks. You might get lucky, survive the first few weeks, and settle down into a safe and sane regimen with steady, sustainable fitness and health gains. Chances are, though, you’ll stagger back home from your first workout tired and discouraged. You wake up next morning really sore – and the morning after that, really really sore. You either quit, or double down and hit it even harder. Do too much, too soon, too hard and it’s usually not a question of if but when you’ll do some mischief to yourself – and whether you’re a professional athlete, a weekend warrior, a regular runner or yogi, or a rookie starting any brand-new fitness program, there’s one bit of common ground.

Getting hurt sucks. Even the most structured, cautious program can get you some dings here and there, and there are ways to fix them – and prevent them. Ryan Osborne is an Austin-area chiropractor, the only Central Texas doctor certified in Advanced Muscle Integration Technique (AMIT), designed to restore functional balance, stability, and strength to muscles and joints as quickly as possible. By manually stimulating both physical and energetic components of muscles, he explains, AMIT re-integrates specialized nerve cells responsible for functional stability, strength, and fine motor control. Re-integrated nerve cells turn normal muscle function back on, with the potential to make recovery almost immediate. “Pushing performance to the limit and beyond is not unique to elite athletes,” Osborne says. “Overtraining causes muscles to be overloaded, and one of two things happen – they tear, or, more commonly, muscle function is inhibited by

If you buy into the craze for hardcore, mud-crawling, pseudo-SEAL, rock-chewing, curl till you hurl, ninja boot camp programs where you can fulfill your sadomasochistic fantasies – if you think bumps, bruises, and colorful athletic tape is a fashion statement – well, good luck. You may be beyond help. If, however, you want to start or continue a reasonable fitness program after the holidays – or, yeah, even before or during the holidays – if you’re recovering from an injury or recovering from or preparing for surgery, or if you want to amp up any training program anytime, Osborne has some professional advice. “Don’t just accelerate. Build a functional foundation ahead of time so you can excelerate performance, without fear of injury. You’ll enjoy your training and your life a whole lot more.”

Ancient healing wisdom, or rocket science? Good question – and a good answer.

F

rom Native Americans to ancient Egypt and Rome, far older cultures than our own have honored the sun as the bringer of life and health, using its heat as a form of therapy and healing. Ultraviolet (UV) rays in sunlight can burn the skin, though, and our modern lifestyle has made us less tolerant of them than our forebears were. The effects of UV radiation, also present in tanning beds and lamps, can cause damage to the skin – painful sunburn, aging and wrinkling, even contributing to skin cancer development, since UV rays can affect DNA that controls skin cell growth. UV is only a small percentage of sunlight, which also contains Far Infrared Rays (FIR), invisible rays of natural sunlight that have the longest wavelength. Sun therapy is a form of natural FIR thermal therapy – but how can you get its benefits without being exposed to potential harm from UV rays?

There are several approved medical devices on the market that can be used safely, by therapists and for home use, to deliver benefits of FIR internally without exposing your skin to sunlight and UV. Your body’s actually a living photocell that already absorbs beneficial light energy from the sun, even without direct exposure. As Dr. Jacob Liberman, author of Light Medicine of the Future explains, “Our lives, our health and well-being are truly dependent on the sun. The human body is nourished directly by eating foods, drinking fluids, or breathing air vitalized by the sun’s light energy.” Research has shown FIR rays are able to penetrate deep into tissues, muscles, and bone, expanding capillaries and gently increasing blood flow. It can also deeply cleanse toxins from your blood and increase its oxygenation and regeneration, meaning red blood cells can do a better job of carrying oxygen and nutrients to major organs and every other part of your body.

Lie down and get some exercise. Other research has shown the deep heating effects of FIR on muscles and internal organs can actually create an increase in both heart volume and rate – the same type of controlled, beneficial heart stress you get from cardiovascular exercise. As your body works to cool itself, there are substantial increases in heart rate, cardiac output, and metabolic rate – you burn calories, in other words. The potential healing applications of using FIR to generate deep heat are, well – pretty cool. Internal heat is what your body naturally uses to fight pathogens, and being able to generate that heat for people unable to exercise safely, or at all – say, bedridden hospital patients – could be a revolutionary form of therapy, free of the harmful side effects of a lot of current conventional therapies. It hasn’t escaped the attention of NASA, of course. Extensive research in the early 1980s led to the conclusion that infrared stimulation would be an ideal way to maintain cardiovascular conditioning in American astronauts during long space flights. Turns out the gulf between modern science and the ancient wisdom of cultures who turned to the sun for healing energy may span thousands of years, but may also just be a heartbeat apart. ROLFING

What is support? by Norma Bell-Bandy Support can mean many things, on many levels – to uphold, maintain, bear weight, serve as a prop, sustain under trial or affliction, to maintain or advocate. Each of these implies a relationship to something else, whether it’s within a singular physical body, or another person or group. Support is necessary in all aspects of life, at all ages. Often, it’s there without your awareness or appreciation, but a lack of it will bring awareness – and a search for it. Dr. Ida Rolf, the creator of the body restructuring system that bears her name, often asked her classes, “What is support? What does it look like in the body? What is supportive?” Ask yourself these same questions. Ponder your discoveries. Are you supported? What does it feel like? How do you support others? What’s supportive in a group or in a relationship?

Jonna

Intuitive Healer

Reiki III Master Deep Tissue Massage Restorative Massage Chakra Balancing

Support implies balance, and assistance. In any relationship, each part matters to the safety and survival of the whole. It can be the foundation of a house, a device that provides functional movement to a paralyzed person, a parent holding a child, the poles of a tent. It can be feeding a lost animal, giving financial help to a charity or a friend. It can be muscular and fascial support in the body. Every part of you needs support – physiologically, functionally, emotionally, and spiritually. For years, studies have been done to understand the effects of stress and the lack of safety on the nervous system. Ask yourself what will increase support and decrease stress, noise, and sense of urgency in your life.

Integration in the body brings awareness to feeling supported, inside and out. It increases overall efficiency, and lessens imbalanced adaptations to various traumas. In Rolfing – the Rolf Method of Structural Integration – there’s always the question of what needs support, and where that support will come from. Often, Rolfers find a pattern of bracing, an attempt to support a physically or emotionally traumatized area. That holding pattern becomes part of the postural expression of stress and lack of support. The result of freeing these patterns is an increased sense of mobility, stability, and personal strength – and that spells support. Dear Ashtara: Messages from Your Angels and Master Teachers Dear Ashtara, Any thoughts on the “Mandela Effect?” I’ve heard it’s the experience of your memories changing. I do feel like many things are changing and while everyone is focusing on the ‘election’ our reality is being manipulated. Something just doesn’t seem right, like there is a lot of misdirection. Do you have any thoughts on that? Brian, 38, Austin, TX Dear Brian, When an individual focuses on a thought and the thought is injected into a theorem, the theorem either takes the thought or rejects it. Thus, the Mandela Effect transforms the rejection, as well as the affect. Thus, true affection equals the sum total of the person’s past and present – reality cannot be manipulated unless the individual is unstable, confused, and weak. Thus, this scenario of the election becomes a fragmented and disconcerted crisis and great plan to see if Americans can “understand” the candidates’ deep and methodical feelings. Truly, never has there been an election as difficult as this one. If you are feeling misdirection, center and transform yourself in the midst of the Law of the Universe, which states that Unparalleled Universes can operate on Earth and other places in the universe. Suffice it to say re-patternization is exactly what you’ve been experiencing. Ponder on those thoughts and you’ll receive the guidance you have wanted. Ashtar and Sandalfon are beginning to speak through you. Mother Mary and Gabriel are guides for you now.

Dear Ashtara, I have two opportunities. Which one should I take? The first job requires me to travel to Australia to be a Transformation Coach for new technology. The second opportunity is a Technical Evangelist helping a company with products and services. The first job pays more and both require travel. John, 42, Austin, TX Dear John, Your first opportunity is the most awarded. The second is short-lived. We think you might consider the first one for it will continue longer than

Dani, 47, Sherman Oaks, CA Dear Dani, You are in a perfect place to try to convince him to marry you by totally understanding everything he’s up to, and being willing to shift in his direction. He is almost at the altar. Keep up the good work and soon he’ll be yours. I see good things for you in the future because you have ascended and become a giant on Earth. Your Master Teacher is Ashtar and your angels are God and Gabriel.

The Heartwakers Club

TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS The Heartwakers Club, with Zaeli I’m stressed out as I write this. It’s the night before my thirty-fifth birthday party, which I designated black tie because I love dressing up, yet I never planned anything to wear. I’m crouching at my computer under an invisible cloud of encroaching deadlines for various projects, both work and “pleasure.” I’ve been too busy to exercise for weeks and feel creaky as a crone. In a matter of days I’ll speak to my biggest live audience yet, and still don’t know what I’ll say. I left everything to the last minute, forgetting I’d have my period this week even though I know it makes me tired and fuzzy-brained. It was on my calendar, I just didn’t look ahead. It takes everything I have not to snap at my husband or slink back to bed in tears. I know I’m lucky, know I’m a healthy, wealthy woman. But today, I feel like garbage. Want to know why? Because I chose to. Day after day, I dug myself into this situation, glossing over long-term goals and going with the flow. Those of us into natural living tend to be gifted at this. We love the present, and the present loves us. We bask in its steady stream of enchantments – cozy rain, friend in town, cravings for ice cream. We cancel plans, procrastinate, and indulge. Business can wait, we shrug. Isn’t this what life is for?

Yes and no. Life is for making the most of. Very often, that means stopping to smell the roses. No one can truly enjoy life if they don’t make a habit of that – but not all times are the right times to stop and smell. Sometimes there’s a hungry bear behind you. Sometimes there are magical roses just ahead, if only you look up and walk on. Learning to take care of business is essential to self-care, which is essential to any relationship. When we don’t do what we know we should – make a doctor’s appointment, look into that engine light, turn in work on time – the anticipated consequences drive up stress. We become less vibrant, more fragile, more likely to lash out. People irritate us, and we search for faults to explain why. Sometimes we even resent our partners, because they love us as we are and kiss away our desire to change. Our deep love for them distracts from things. Why finish cleaning the garage when all you want is to feed each other another gooey sundae? Why work on that novel when your honey downloaded twenty seasons of Law & Order?

Why think about self-control when all you want is to surrender and merge? It’s not easy. That’s why love feels like falling. But at some point, you have to get ahold of yourself, be an adult, live in a way that’s better than just getting by. That means doing stuff that isn’t fun, including labors of love. You deserve this, and people who depend on you deserve it – you can’t be your best ensnared in dysfunction and guilt. This may require boundary setting, putting yourself first, asking for help in whatever trips you up, whether it’s writing things down, finding a gym buddy, or choosing a regular place for your keys. There’s no shame in this. Everyone has weaknesses –that’s why relationships are great. They allow us to compliment each other, witness each other’s efforts, push each other on with praise. Start now. Don’t wait until you blame the person you love most for things you like about yourself least. I’m not there now, but have been in the past, and know it to be a painful lie. It’s up to each of us to find a sustainable groove. We’re allowed breaks from it – that’s what holidays and vacations are for – but we should be able to come back and slip into a groove. The labors of our hearts are thank-you gifts to the world. Getting them out might be tedious, but giving thanks is just good manners. Take the time and help you need to get big things done – it’s not either/or. You can weed your rose bed and smell it too.
