Thanksgiving is America’s family holiday. By planes, trains, and automobiles, we move across the country to spend a day with family. We feast. We give thanks. What else do we do? Today we explore five Southeast Texas Thanksgiving traditions. If one is right for your family, feel free to adopt it and to customize it to make it your own. 1. Share a family recipe. For many SETX families, Thanksgiving is one of the few times multiple generations are able to get together. It can be fun to have a “secret” recipe for a while, but at some point it is time to pass it on to the next generation. Gather everyone and teach them all to make your famous pumpkin or sweet potato pie, yeast rolls, or fried turkey. Who has a knack for cooking? Pass the recipe on to them. 2. Get physical. We are all going to eat more than we want to. That is why so many of us are sprawled out on couches after the big meal. If you are asleep, you are not engaged with your family. Find an activity that your family can share together that will give you back some of your energy. Many SETX families enjoy touch football games, hiking in the Big Thicket, canoeing, or pitching washers. Pick something that works for men and women, for kids and for seniors. It is all about being together. 3. Share our regional traditions. Has your family moved all across the country? This is more and more common as careers take us across the US and even across the world. Chances are that your family has some strong regional traditions. Renew them this Thanksgiving. Maybe that is getting the kids together for a crabbing adventure (not sure what to do with that annoying turkey neck? It’s perfect crab bait). For others, it is a trip to the family’s deer camp. Lots of families enjoy hanging out at the beach house or lake house. What is your family’s local tradition? Bring it back this year.
Say, “I saw it in SETX Family Guide”
8
www.SETXFamily.com
4. Get out from in front of the TV. Do we love to watch football on Thanksgiving? Absolutely. Is it a legitimate family tradition? Certainly. It is also rare for us to all be together, so carve out some time to do things away from the TV. Play cards or dominos, dust off the Monopoly or RISK board, CandyLand or set up a video camera and take turns telling family stories. 5. Lower your Thanksgiving stress. Sometimes the best new tradition is letting go of an old one. Is it exhausting to make each recipe the way your mother or grandmother did? Maybe this is the year to let go. Have a caterer provide some of the items and keep back one or two items to make yourself. Your family may miss some of their favorites, but they will really appreciate having more of your time, energy, and focus over Thanksgiving. Your time is always the most valuable thing you can offer your family.
Chances are that while you were reading our selections, you have thought of some ideas that are even better for you and your family, spring board off those inspirations! That is wonderful. Our goal is to get you thinking about what will make this Thanksgiving – and future family holidays – more memorable for you and for your Southeast Texas Family.

Southeast Texas Families Outdoors
Catfish Offer Fun, Food, and Education
We hear from a lot of moms who want to get their children out from in front of the TV and X-Box and into some outdoor activities. For many in Southeast Texas, catfish offer family friendly fun. They are a species that can be found across Southeast Texas. You don’t have to have a boat, expensive gear, or a lot of knowledge. Most importantly, catfish seem pretty eager to get on a child’s hook, so they offer a great introduction to fishing. Every pond, creek, lake, and river in Southeast Texas has catfish in it.
Getting Started:
Good news. You do not have to spend a lot of money. Do you already have a fishing pole you or your child can cast? Perfect. If not, head to Academy Sports and Outdoors and choose one the right size for your child and the right price for you. They usually have one that will work just fine for around twenty dollars. For beginners, even small children, I would recommend skipping the Barbie poles and choose a Zebco rod and reel. The “33” model reel is a good beginner’s option. The Zebco “33” is just as easy to cast as a child’s pole and will last longer. Advanced fishermen will develop their own preferences down the road, but this is a good starter combo. While you are buying your rod, ask for some bobbers and hooks for catfish and they will steer you in the right direction. They will even show you how to put them on properly. You can use a weight instead of a bobber, but watching the bobber with eager anticipation adds an element of excitement for children. Worms are a good bait for beginners and experts alike. Your child can dig their own or you can get them at Academy or at a Golden Triangle convenience store near you. Bring a chair and head for a pond or creek near you. Cast and wait. Soon, a catfish will find you. The good thing about using worms is other fish might find you as well, including perch or bass. Bring a pair of pliers (the one in your tool kit or junk drawer is fine) to shake the catfish off of your hook and you’re all set.

www.SETXFamily.com
Additional Resources: Many local state parks offer “free fishing days”. Call around and ask if they have dates on the calendar. Most offer free fishing poles to the first fifty or a hundred children (you even get to keep the pole) and advice on how to catch fish. You Tube is also a great tool. Search for beginner’s fishing videos and you’ll be armed with enough knowledge to get through your first couple of fishing adventures with your child. Your child’s friends can be invaluable. You don’t have to look far in Southeast Texas to find an eight or nine-year-old who knows how to tie a perfect fishing knot, where to cast, and how to clean a fish. Invite them to go with you. All kids enjoy the chance to show their special skills – and to be appreciated for them.

Cooking your Catfish: It is not rocket science. You can cook a catfish any way you cook any other fish. Fried is easy, reliable, and popular here. Today, we’ll look at something different. Catfish and Grits: This recipe can be easily adjusted for your taste or your child’s. Don’t hesitate to add or remove ingredients. Recipe is for four catfish fillets. Adjust accordingly x Grits for four servings – follow the recipe on your box/bag of grits x ½ onion, diced x Handful of grated cheddar cheese x 2 tablespoons butter x 1 tablespoon Tony Chachere’s Cajun Spice
Start your grits and begin heating a skillet for your catfish. Cast iron is wonderful, but any skillet will work. Add one tablespoon of your butter. Sautee your onions while the pan is heating. Sprinkle your Tony’s on each side of the catfish fillets. When the pan is hot, add your fillets. Listen and watch. When that side is crispy, flip the fillets. On a hot pan, you should be able to cook them in around five minutes. Put your grits on each plate, top with your desired amount of cheese and add the catfish fillets and caramelized onions to the top. Catfish and Grits is easy to make, offers a wonderful mix of tastes and textures, and is reasonably healthy. Moms can modify to make it even healthier – substitute Olive Oil for butter, remove the cheese, or sauté additional vegetables while your pan heats – zucchini, cherry tomatoes, kale, or whatever you and your child will enjoy.
If you’re looking to get your child out from in front of the TV, fishing is a great hobby. You can get them started, but they will likely soon outgrow your knowledge. That is great – they can take ownership of their activity. Do you and your child enjoy fishing? Tag us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or use #SETXFamily. We’d love to share them with our readers.
