Illustrious Sir Gary R. Radvansky Potentate of Alzafar Shriners Nobles, since my last communication, so many things have happened. We do not realize just how lucky we are until tragedy strikes. The hurricanes and storms have created such havoc and destruction in many areas of the world, and have altered the lives of so many of our brother nobles, masons and their families. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of these families with hopes that they will be cared for during this long road to recovery. God bless you all. I am looking forward to all of our upcoming activities here at Alzafar. Our Ceremonial on October 7th will be a great time welcoming in our new nobles & their families. We will be conducting all degrees on that day, ending with a celebration Gala with food, dancing and fun. This event will be free to all nobles and their guests. It’s time for some fun & fellowship; therefore, please come help us celebrate. One week later on the 14th, we have our Hospital Gala which is promised to be an outstanding event. You will be taken back in time as you will see our beloved Shrine transformed into the Rat Pack Lounge of the 60’s. Next, our Masonic Picnic on the 21st will be held at Camp Alzafar and start with the Oklahoma Indian Degree Team, the competitive Chili Cook Off, and end with great food and entertainment. Oh, but don’t forget……Circus Circus Circus! Are you ready? Your Divan members have been hard at work coordinating with their committees to ensure a great time is had by all. Thank you all for your hard work and dedication. The positive energy is so amazing and you can feel it everywhere. I am so thankful for the nobles of Alzafar. We are truly a family! Time, Talent and Tithing The deadline for this article to be turned in fell in an odd place. It had to be submitted before the circus arrived, but by the time you are able to read this, the circus has just passed. At this particular time I can tell you that everything is in place and we’re ready to go. All of our committees have met and everyone is ready to help make this year’s circus the best yet. I thank all of you who have made the payment for your Nobility tickets. Payments are rolling in everyday and they are definitely helping to contribute to the success of this year’s circus. Congratulations and many thanks to Assistant Rabban, Eric DeWalt, his Lady Suzy, and the gala committee for sacrificing many hours of their time in preparation of this year’s Hospital Gala. It definitely was a swinging good time. The purpose for this gala was to raise money for the Shriners Hospitals for Children, but I believe the evening went much further than that. It wasn’t just all about the money. There were stories shared from patients as well as hospital staff members and even an appearance from the individual who was the child in the iconic photo of “the Silent Messenger”. The evening captured the hearts of everyone in attendance and showed why we are the best Fraternity and Philanthropy in the world. Elections for the 2018 governing body of Alzafar Shrine will be held next month during the stated meeting on December 14th. One of the biggest decisions to be made is for the office of Oriental Guide. If you are or will be seeking the office of Oriental Guide, I invite you and your Lady to meet with me and the Divan on Monday November 20th at 6:00pm in the Alzafar Shrine Conference Room to discuss what is expected from the position, duties and responsibilities, and to answer any questions you or your Lady might have.
Time, talent and tithing – all things that come straight from the heart.They were also three things that were generously, graciously and selflessly given before, during and after the 2017 Alzafar Shrine Rat Pack Lounge Hospital Gala. TIME – I cannot begin to thank the many, many people that gave up their time to help Suzy and I plan and execute this amazing event. The tireless efforts of the Gala Committee; the relentless crew that pounded the pavement to secure auction donations; the many hands that helped the day of the event in set-up, manning the auction, check-in, check-out, and taking care of the many little details that were so important to ensuring the events success. TALENT – The Rat Pack Lounge had the honor of bringing together individuals that enriched our lives with their amazing talents. The beautiful voice of Kechi, the amazing Silent Messenger painting from artist Pete Lara, the video visit from our very own Bobby Joe and the helping hands of the many individuals that helped us manage the details of the event were all talents that were given selflessly to help our Shriner Children. TITHE – The generosity from every level of sponsorship helped us achieve our initial goal of starting the evening in the black. But we could not have foreseen the outpouring of financial support throughout the evening from Shriner’s and non-Shriners alike. We are truly in awe of the abundant generosity. Finally, I would like to thank Tater and Amanda Reyes and Garrett Etheridge for their unwavering support. Their mantra of “We Got This” kept me going as my stress levels increased. They truly became my “right-hand” team. Last, but by no means least, I want to thank my wonderful wife, Suzy. My Suzy is always by my side through thick and thin and during Gala preparation she was called away to Scotland for a family emergency. “We Got This”, was all I heard from my team. Then, as the big event was about to begin, Suzy got the call that her father had passed away. With amazing grace and strength, she stayed with me and made sure the night was a success. She is truly my rock. Please keep her and her family in your prayers. We can look back and say what a fun and successful event we had but it would not have been so without the donation of the gifts of Time, Talent and Tithing. Again, I thank all for you efforts.
Well, it may not be hurricane season at Alzafar, but it is definitely the busy season. I hope you made it out to the Second Session Ceremonial on Oct. 7th because it was quite the event. There are a number of people I would like to thank for putting on such a great event. With the chance of missing some that also worked, I wanted to mention a few that really contributed a lot. I wanted to highlight Gordon McKinney and his team for their great job in putting on a fabulous first session. I heard that the belly dancers and our dancing sultan, Eric Dewalt, were also a hit. I wanted to thank Walter Koehler, Ron Trine and all of the Directors Staff for doing their normal, excellent second session ceremonial. There were also a number of volunteers like George Robbins, Luis and Dyana Cardenas, Eddy and Doreen Bowers, Tommy Leverett, Doug Anderson, Suzy Dewalt, and Illustrious Sir Gary Radvansky and his Lady Cheryl that made the event happen. Special thanks goes out to Martha Bartlett for making sure that that everything ran smoothly that day. It would not have occurred without you. The next big event is the Masonic Picnic/Chili Cook-off on October 21st with the Oklahoma Masonic Indian Degree Team putting on an awesome outdoor degree. I will hopefully be able to report to you next month that this event was a big success also. 325.11 Election Regulations (a) Electioneering. The printing, publication, circulating, or distribution of resolutions, letters, telegrams, tickets, email or other devices, by a Noble, suggesting, recommending, opposing or containing the names of proposed candidates for office in the temple is prohibited. (b) Violation. For any violation of (a) above, the Imperial Potentate may suspend any offending Noble, and he may declare the election of the officers void and order a new election. (c) Notice. At least one week prior to the annual meeting or any election the temple Recorder shall mail to each member a notice thereof containing this section.
Effective teamwork across the board on all things Alzafar, this is what I witnessed last month. October was an especially busy month for our fraternity. It was such a pleasure to not only be a part of but to also watch the culmination on projects that we had throughout the month. The Ceremonial, Hospital Gala, Masonic Picnic and Chili Cookoff, Alzafar’s Children’s Halloween Party, the Circus committees; what a grand fraternity that we have. The one thing that can never truly be repaid is what you give the most, your “TIME”. Thank you, Nobles and Ladies, for all your contributions. If you haven’t heard the Alzafar Home Brew Unit is up a firing, on all cylinders. Congratulations to Brew master Scott Stefick for taking the reins as its inaugural head. If you have an affinity for all things beer or would just like to learn, the Shriner Bocks meet on the 4th Wednesday of the month. The Alzafar class of 2107 has made it through, the Ceremonial team and Directors Staff put on quite the day. These new Nobles are looking for a home, it would be remiss on our part if we did not reach out to them and bring them into one of our many glorious clubs and units. Lastly, the OG Roundtable in looking for opportunities to assist with raising fundraising for our Transportation fund, is going to have a Punk Rock Fez-tivle on the pavilion November 18. We have 8 bands that are either: for minimal charge or FREE providing their talent. Not one volunteer will be turned away, if you are interested in helping out please contact this lil OG. Many of our brothers, dear friends and family members have endured a 500 year catastrophic event, which will be everlasting both in mind and financially. I am very proud to have been in attendance with our Potentate and our wives, to present the generosity of you and the Pearsall Lions Club to the hospital staff of both Houston and Galveston hospitals recently. The staff stayed with the kids during the hurricane to make sure they were taken care of, only to find out they themselves had suffered severe losses of their own. The entire staff were so moved and the gifts were very much appreciated. Please continue to keep all in our constant prayers for a speedy recovery. Next up is the circus. We appreciate all of your hard work to make this event a great success. If you are looking for a place to make a contribution during the circus, you can contact Jason Triggs, Dennis Stevens or myself, we will find a very comfortable place for you to assist. Please continue to support your local Blue Lodges each month. It is making a huge difference. The more we can help them increase their membership, the more opportunities we will have to do the same. Did we survived October?: If you are reading this message we survived another October. The Shrine had events every weekend of October and we also had the Shrine Center rented for 18 times. Our new employee Lynda Hall is working hard bringing in rental income and our maintenance department is doing a great job with the setups, tear downs and never ending cleaning. To help free up some of Lynda’s time to work on bringing in New Rentals, Carol, will be working with All Masonic Groups (LOS, NILE, Units and Clubs and Masonic groups) when it comes to using the Alzafar facility. When planning your event please try to remember that the weekends are our best opportunity to rent the building to the public and bring in rental income to run Alzafar. Parade participation: The parades that we participate in each year are decided by our current Potentate. Shrine parades are our opportunity to show the public that we as Alzafar Shriners are alive and active in the community. Go back to your Unit and have a discussion about your Unit participation. We not only get to advertise the Shrine Circus we get to show that public that we can raise serious money for our Shrine Hospitals and have a great time working together. We would love to see all of our Units show up and be a part of the fun we have in the parades. Attend the next Stated Meeting: Another opportunity to meet with your fellow Unit Members is attending the Stated meetings together. The whole idea of the Stated Meeting is to pass on the information that your Unit members need to know. Our Potentate has worked hard to make the meetings informative, educational and fun. My recommendation is to never attend a Stated Meeting alone. Ask a friend to attend and share a ride. December is always Election night at the Stated Meeting: Come out and cast your vote during the December meeting. Alzafar is always blessed to always have several great candidates to choose from during our elections. Attend your Unit and Club meetings and meet the candidates and ask your questions prior to the election. Come out and join us at the next event and find out why I say “Alzafar Rocks”! Luis “Bet-O” Cardenas Shriner of the Month Alzafar Divan Congratulations to Noble Luis “Bet-O” Cardenas for being selected as Alzafar Shrine’s Shriner of the Month for October. Noble Cardenas has been an integral part of our Shrine’s success over the last few months and has been exceptionally busy the last month working hard for our philanthropy and our fraternity as the go to for Camp Alzafar, clown extraordinaire, and general go to for all things Shrine. As a member and President of the Camp Association, Noble Cardenas has ensured that Camp Alzafar is firing on all cylinders. He took the project of revamping the cook shack under his wings and has completely refurbished the entire building saving Camp and the Shrine quite a bit of money in the process. He has made it a point to show up to each stated meeting while also managing to contribute to his faith and family. Noble Cardenas has been at every parade as Bet-O the clown bringing smiles and spreading the word of our philanthropy to the masses. He has also stayed busy with our Shrine functions as he and his Lady Dyana played a large part in setting up for the recent full form ceremonial as well as participating in the event itself as the Assistant Rabban of the Ritualistic Divan Degree Team. When our Shrine has asked this Noble to show up, he has been there and has always represented his Unit, the Shrine, and our hospitals well. Lastly, Noble Cardenas exemplifies what we stand for as Masons and Shriners and has more than earned a position as Shriner of the Month. Noble Cardenas’ steadfast devotion to his faith, family, fraternity, and philanthropy are in keeping with the honor and integrity that such award carries with it.
MEMBERSHIP By: Al Rapoza Let me start with thanks for all your prayers and encouragement during my transplant recovery. I still have a long road to a full recovery, but this will not prevent me from performing my duties. We are still recruiting new Nobles and hopefully with your assistance we will continue to grow. Let’s not lose sight of what we represent and who we are. This has been a great year for us and I know we are going to continue to become the best. I would like to see more Nobles attending their Mother Lodges and speaking to the Brothers about becoming Shriners. I receive phone calls and emails from prospective candidates who express an interest. ATTENTION ALL POTENTATE APPOINTEES All Potentate Appointments for 2017 will terminate at the end of the Shrine year. New appointments will be made by the Potentate Elect at the beginning of the year. This applies to all Ambassadors, Staff and other Appointees.
GOLF GIMMES By: Walt, the Sub-scribe October is one of one of the busiest months of the year, so before we go into October’s happenings, we need to digress to some important issues in the Golf Unit. First foremost President Todd had to relinquish his duties to VP Hamilton due to a very serious illness. The good news is that he came through a serious heart bypass and is on the way to recovering. Also, an award given at TSA to one of the golf members did not make the Alzafar bragging list. Noble Ray Falke was awarded the TSA “Oldest Golfer” (at 90 years old, the award should read “the most ”experienced golfer” he was part of the Alzafar team that brought home a trophy. Noble Falke began golfing in 1950 and has been a contributing member of the Golf team since1983. Congratulations Ray. The annual Golf Unit’s Presidents trip at Horse Shoe Bay Resort was cut short by the rains we got at the end of September. But a great time was had by all participants, while it lasted. Halloween is around the corner and the “tricks or treat” golf unit team will have the Golf room ready with spooks, ghosts and treats. The Circus team of 4 curtain handlers and 3 to monitor the entrance to the Branding Iron. Some might not realize, but this requires working every performance. That is real work, so when you see these nobles, give them a high five and thank them for volunteering to represent our Golf Unit. How many of us knew that the Circus was held in the Coliseum for the first time with Alzafar producing it, the production job was done by the golf unit? Now you know the rest of the story. Noble and Lady Puckett have been busy preparing for the Annual Officer Installation and Christmas dinner on Dec. 8th at the Petroleum Club. Details will be forthcoming soon.
Another month has raced by as 2017 nears its end. I, as President of the Nemnufs in 2017, am saddened by the pace that my year has gone by. My first year as President of the Nemnufs was 1984 and it was special also. It has this time however, been my privilege and honor as a Senior member to the leader of such a fine group. It is great to be a part of this unit, but to be trusted with the dates of the President is, also a thrill. We have had a great year winning more individual awards at the Texas Shrine Association Mid Winter in every category and winning the Number 1 clown unit at All State also. We continue to grow in our membership and we are a family unit and enjoy one another as well. We are the most visible unit in the Shrine, especially at the circus averaging over 1 hour per performance at the circus clowning. We have a blast when we clown, but we also bring out the smiles and make a lot of children and families happy as well. We only have 3 parades plus the circus remaining for 2017. We will have good participation at the parades, but we will have 20-25 clowns at each circus performance. We will be doing our 1st place All State skit at the circus. We plan on making our fellow shriners proud at the circus, but we always try to please our Potentate. Next year will be no different as we will make our new Potentate for 2018 equally as proud. We also welcome back our Potentate, Mr. Gary Radvansky, as a clown in 2018. He already is working on his new costume. We love being "Nemnuf" clowns and we love being part of Alzafar Shrine. Burning Sun Nobles continue to proudly serve and represent our Temple at every opportunity given to us. Participating in the Floresville Festival Parade and being able to see the crowd react to our riding maneuvers was amazing to witness. Showing our continued support of all service members, we will be riding on November 11th for the Veterans Day Parade. With many other events throughout the year and this month we strive to be a unit that anyone would love to be a part of. As always if you are looking for a unit that has family, fun, and speed come out and see us. We meet on the 2nd Wednesday of every month in room 5. We look forward to seeing you at our stated meeting.
With the addition of the St. Louis Blues March to the Drum & Bugle Corps repertoire, we expect to change the program for next year’s All-State. I you would like to be a part of the new program, come on by and join us. We are always looking for more musicians. Currently we are performing on brass instruments that are played in the band; Bb trumpets, Bb marching French horns, marching trombones, marching baritones, etc. We do have instruments that we can lend to you. We need low brass and percussion players. We are also need percussionists and we have drums for you to play. We are a very lowpressure organization in terms of expectations and very flexible concerning time commitment. Thursday evening practices in Room 8 start at 7:30pm and end at 9:00pm. Our monthly meeting was held on October 4th with 13 members and 4 wives present. On September 21st, many of our nobles and ladies drove 9 hours to El Paso to participate in TSPGA Provost Guard pistol shoot put on by El Maida Shrine. Everyone had a great time and our nobles brought home 3 trophies. Floyd Barker, Tom Martin, Tony Montez and John Pendleton won the 1st place D team trophy. Rich Orr, Glenn Dyess, and Steve Aikens won the 2nd place D team trophy. Terry Zittle won the Top two hand shooter trophy. Thanks to the ladies who attended the Fall Invitational-Jennie Barker, Lynda Dyess, Gretchen Martin, Rose Montes, Irene Pendleton, and Jan Hadley. Congratulations to Steve Aikens who was installed as the TSPGA State Marshal and Tony Montez who is the TSPGA Secretary/Treasurer. We will host the next Provost Guard shoot March 23-25, 2018. Please mark those dates on your calendar now. Everyone's help will be needed to make this a successful event. We dined on a delicious meal of ribs prepared David Hadley. November 2-5 is the 2017 Alzafar Shrine Circus. We need all of our nobles to come to as many of the 9 circus performances as possible and help with security inside and outside of the Freeman Coliseum. As we know safety is most important. Sign in at the RV and help make the circus a success. Your participation is greatly appreciated by everyone involved with the circus. The Provost Guard Christmas Party and Installation of Officers will be December 1st in the Alzafar Parlor at 6:30p.m. Cost is $25.00. RSVP to David Hadley (210) 663-5960. We are always looking for new members. All interested Shriners are welcome to join. Our monthly meeting are held the first Wednesday of each month. Cocktails and visitation begins at 6:00p.m., dinner is served at 6:30 and the meeting begins at 7:00. Wives are always invited. As always, we start off thanking the line up at the stated meeting. We were really super, as we had two Illustrious Past Potentates, G.I. Flores and Stu Simms. By the time we read the Achbar, we have already had the second section ceremonial and thanks to the Nobles that supported the club. Thanks to the lineup that supported the club at the Hospital Gala. As always, very happy to have had the individuals from the Galveston Hospital as guests in our room. A big thank you to all the Nobles and Ladies that supported the club for Halloween. We always have a lot of fun giving out candy to all the lil spooks. Almost forgot to thank the Nobles that supported the club at the Floresville Parade. The Black Camel policed up another Noble, Roy Ovalle. Prayers go out to the family. We just can’t seem to shake that Black Camel from our club, with that being said.. our prayers that we remain in good health and stay safe.

It is to honor and celebrate Veterans Day of all the men and women who fought to protect our country giving their lives, and some have come back home to their families. God bless them all. On Saturday, December 16th, we’ll again be sponsoring a Magic Show for kids of all ages. The show will be held at 7:00 PM in the Boerne Champion High School Auditorium. So come and let CJ the Magician mystify you as well as the kids – and yes, whatever your or their ages are! We are also preparing for our Christmas Dinner at an area restaurant on Wednesday, December 20th and the “changing of the guard” in our officer corps, otherwise known as our Installation of Officers for 2018. Come and join us for Christmas dinner.

SHRINE MEMORIAL This time of year, the Alzafar Shrine has a constant buzz of activity, with something happening just about every weekend. But during the hustle and bustle of Shrine life, there is one event that should give us pause and remind us how precious life is. This year, Suzy and I are honored to be in charge of the annual Shrine Memorial. Members of the Hill Country Shrine Club traveled to San Antonio for the September Stated Meeting and presented a check to the Potentate for the transportation fund. Two fund raising events this year resulted in a total $8,062.00 contribution to the transportation fund. The Club has contacted major RV Parks in the greater Kerrville area and left information regarding our meetings in an effort to welcome Nobles from other temples wintering in the Hill Country.

It has been a busy two months since Altrui was dark
the months of July and August. Our Grand High Priestess visit was held Aug. 4th & 5th.
We had our famous Las Vegas Night on September 30th. What a night. Lady Ruby Stimson, Princess, and her crew drew a great crowd. We even had to get another table to cover all who wanted to play.
October found us preparing and serving the Rod & Gun
Club again and thanks to all, we have been asked to do it again next year. Oct 7th we were invited to have a booth at the Alzafar Shrine ceremonial where we greeted the new Nobles and their lady. October 12-14 saw nine of Altrui unit members travel to the annual Unit Meet in Tulsa, OK. Members of our combined units entertained our High Priestess, Frankie Tuma, with a delightful performance. Under the direction of Lady Beverly Luce, Directress of the Dance Unit, practice was held weekly for several months to perfect their routine. It really showed as members from other courts remarked how great it was. My Fez off to Lady Beverly.
The Rod & Gun Club will delay their regular first Sunday
in November due to the circus. They have asked us to serve them November 12th with Turkey and all the trimmings. We will not have a business meeting in December as our Christmas Party is held the same first Thursday, same time, same place. Lady Ann Teague, Second Ceremonial Lady, is planning a great party and her project is to provide stuffed toys to be given to children when there is an emergency in their family and the police or social workers can calm the child or children when this occurs. So, start now buying these stuffed animals so we can shower the agency with a lot of stuffed toys. Wishing everyone a very happy Thanksgiving and a good Black Friday. REPORT ON 2017 IMPERIAL SESSION By Bob Hunt, Imperial Representative
Good Nobles all, a good time was had by all in Daytona Beach, FL (by the few that attended) at the 143rd session of the Imperial Council of Shriners International. Almost every one that attended participated in the Walk, Ride or Drive for love to the rescue, which benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children. It was held at the Daytona International Speedway. The Alzafar fire truck was there (with Harry and Walter) for the drive around the Speedway and also for the Imperial Parade. The Provost Guard competed in the first ever Imperial shoot. They won three trophies. Shooters were ‐ David Hadley, Steve Aikens, Phil Neal, Ken Propus and John Dunn. John also won in the Highlanders competition. They will compete again next year. We currently have a membership of 244,330 nobles, which is down 12,682 from last year. There were 6,947 Nobles created and 2,956 affiliated and restored. On the loss side there were 1,948 demits, 9,300 deaths, 10,790 suspensions and 351 resigned or were expelled. Alzafar went from 1,751 members to 1,552 for a loss of 199; that’s a 11% loss. There were 22 temples with a net gain. That’s only 12% of our Shrine Temples. Kem Temple, which had a gain in members for 17 consecutive years, had a loss in membership. Four of five International Temples had a gain. We currently have 6,489 international Shriners. We really need to recruit more members and our membership committee is real close to achieving that goal. Way to go Nobles. The Iowa Corp. (Fraternal side) had a gain to $2,049,000 for 2016. The reason for the gain is our per capita gain and interest increased. Shriners International has over 9.07 billion in assets, up from 7.67 billion in 2015. The Endowment Fund has over 8.8 billion up $100 million. While we did experience an overall increase in operating revenue, we continue to be challenged by low interest rates and our investment returns on the endowment decreased by $26 million from 2015. These returns continue to be more than $75 million less than we received 10 years ago As a result, while healthcare costs are increasing, we are without a significant revenue source that we once had, which helped to support the operations of our system. Although we ended the year with a $172 million operating loss, up from previous years, we had many positive trends in our system. For the first time in many years, our overall system witnessed growth in not just our outpatient services up over 7%, but also with inpatient volumes. We continue to see more children each year, over 1.3 million since 1922, however that comes at a cost, as can be witnessed in the growth of the hospital expenses by more than $42 million from 2015. We continue to see increased awareness of our system, as well as continued increase in donations, which helps to offset the loss of investment income. We also must strategically look at our healthcare system to ensure that we are primed to continue to serve our patients while keeping up with an ever evolving healthcare system landscape. The last three paragraphs were submitted by our outgoing (retiring) Imperial Treasurer ‐ James Mc Connell. In sports fund raising, the East/West Shrine football game is in its 7th year @ Tampa with attendance rising. The Collage Baseball Classic game in Houston raises over $46,000 with attendance up over 50% with Bill Wassburg and Charlie Eads having a lot to do with the success of this event. 66 golf tournaments raised over $882,000. 31 football games raised over $700,000. 159 sporting events total over $1.6 million The International Clown Assoc. presented a check for $107,000 from the Red Sneaker Fund. Last year in Tampa we voted on 30 items. This year in Daytona Beach 50 items were on the agenda ‐ 45 items on the fraternal side and 5 items on the hospital side. Of the fraternal side of the Iowa Corporation business 34 amendments passed, 8 failed and 3 were withdrawn. There will be another “Six Pack”of changes to vote on next year. They will be bundling services; membership benefits; Infinity credit cards; life membership by age; airfare for representatives with limits and change of fiscal year to Imperial year. Of importance that passed. (1) This amendment will clarify that all amounts payable to Shriners International, shall be payable in US dollars. (2) Shall clarify which edition of Roberts Rules of Order will govern, edition #11 (3) Notice to all Rep’s of a special session would be given by first class mail or registered mail ten days before the session as required by the Iowa Statutes. (4) The duties of the Imperial Treasurer would coincide with the fiscal year of the corporation, which may or may not be on a calendar year. (5) The dispensations and charters committee will approve and report to SI on the change of membership in an Association of Temples. (6) The dispensations and Charters Committee may approve and report to SI on the change of location of a Temple. (7) Would provide that proposals to move the location would need to be signed by 100 members of the Temple or 10% of the membership, whichever is less. (8) All temples will elect members by a majority vote of the written ballots cast, (9) All complaints filed under Article 30 of the bylaws of Shriners International must contain an acknowledgement that a complaint filed in bad faith or for frivolous reasons is a violation of Shrine law and that the complaint is not filed in bad faith or for frivolous reasons. In addition, upon receipt of a complaint under Article 30 of the bylaws of Shriners International, the Potentate of the Temple must provide the complaining Noble with a complete copy of Article 30 of the bylaws of Shriners International and schedule a meeting to attempt to resolve the complaint. (10) If A grievance committee finds by a majority vote that there is probable cause for believing an offense has been committed by the accused Noble and further finds by a majority vote that complaint was filed in bad faith or for a frivolous reason, the grievance committee can fix the punishment to the complaining Noble for filing a complaint in bad faith or for a frivolous reason subject to the right of the aggrieved Noble to appeal. (11) A fez can be provided to a new noble as part of the initiation fee. (12) An Imperial Potentate can grant dispensation to allow participation by non‐ nobles in a parade at the annual session of Shriners International for the annual session during his term in office. (13) A petition has been received from Nobles & Master Masons in the country of Bolivia for dispensation to open a new Temple titled Bolivia Shriners in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.(14) A petition has been received from Nobles and Master Masons in the country of Brazil for dispensation to open a new temple titled Amal Shriners in Sao Paulo, S.P. Brazil. This will make 198 Shrine Temples internationally. Importance of Amendments that failed: (1) The reimbursements for airfare would be capped at $750 for U.S domestic fares and $1500 for international fares. (2) The duties of the Imperial Potentate would include an annual review of the Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer of Shriners International. The Imperial Potentate would also have the authority, with the approval of the majority of the Board of Directors, to remove him from his position or terminate his employment in accordance with state and federal laws. (3) Temples supporting international development can apply for reimbursement of a portion of the expenses relating to the international development under limited conditions. (4) The amendments would provide that proposals to move the location of a temple would need
to be signed by at least a majority of the official divan. (5) In civic parades, and non‐shrine public appearances , with permission of the Potentate, Nobles and their ladies may also dress in clown costume and participate with the Clown Unit of the Temple, but only Nobles may perform, compete, ride vehicles with fewer than four wheels, or operate any vehicle of the temple units while parading. There were two candidates for Imperial Captain of the Guard: Gale Bennington and Lawrence Leib; Leib won. Brad Koehn is the new Imperial Treasurer and Randy Rudge is the new Imperial Recorder. On the hospital side, the Colorado Corporation had five amendments: four passed and one failed. Of importance, amendments that passed: (1) The amendment would change the principle place of business from Denver, Colorado to 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, Florida, and the registered agent from the office to the recorder of El Jebel Shriners to the Corporation Company. (2) The amendment will clarify which edition of Roberts Rules of Order will govern – No. 11. (3) Minutes of the meetings of the members, directors, trustees, committees exercising the powers of the directors or trustees and the Investment Committee shall be made available to the members of the Colorado Corporation through a secure site at Shriners Village. Amendments that failed: (1) The minimum of 9 years necessary to become a Trustee Emeritus could be a combination of elected and appointed years. In addition, A Chairman of the Board of Trustees would become a Chairman Emeritus when his term expires regardless of the number of years he served as a Chairman of the Board of Trustees. There were three candidates for hospital trustees. Elected were Skip Stanaway, Peter Diaz, MD, and James Doel. There was an election for the President of the Board of Trustees, Shriners Hospital for Children. Imperial Potentate Jerry Gantt was re‐elected. Be thinking about next years – Imperial is in Daytona Beach, Florida again – July 15‐19, 2018. Nashville, TN June 30‐July 4, 2019; Kansas City, KS July 5‐9, 2020, and Houston, TX July 5‐9, 2021. October has been a sad month as we have lost an Emeritus Director Lewis “Nuckles” Gimbel 0n Oct 7th. He was one of the most loyal and dedicated Mason and Shriner that I knew. He loved people and people loved him. And above all he dearly loved the Directors Staff. May the Grand master above comfort his family during this sorrowful time. Here we are with the year almost gone and is time to elect our officers for the incoming year. Our meeting is on the 14th so plan to be there as this is an important part of our unit and we need everyone’s participation. Next month on December 15th we will have our annual Christmas Party, a Friday night, jointly with the Roustabout unit. Mark your calendar as we always have a great time with good fellowship, libations, food and music. Last month we had a great second section ceremonial when we initiated into our order our new Nobles. What an event it was. Now we need to recruit some of them into our unit, so go to work and see if you can get one to join us. On Sunday November 12th at 2 P.M. we will have our annual Alzafar Shrine Memorial service for our deceased brothers, so plan to be there to show our respect for them being a part of our fraternity. Talked with our member that lives in Rockport, Julius Hjulian, and he said he was blessed and had no storm damage, however he said Rockport had quite a bit of destruction. I missed last months article because I had a new knee replacement and finally am getting back to normal. Viviano Rodriquez is in an assisted living facility. ORIENTAL GUIDE MUST BE SELECTED WISELY When members of a Shrine Center elect a Noble to the office of Oriental Guide, they are virtually starting that Noble through the Divan on the assumption that he will prove qualified for and worthy of advancement to the high office of Illustrious Potentate. Hence it is quite evident that the nomination for Oriental Guide should be based upon through and accurate evaluation of character, ability, prestige, interest, and experience. A Noble can be a good fellow, a hard worker, and a loyal Shriner…and yet lack the basic qualifications, which make a good Potentate. Unless a Noble is fully qualified for the job, he is unfair both to himself and to his Temple in seeking the office or in permitting his fellow Nobles to support and promote his candidacy. Each Shrine Temple needs and requires able high-type leadership. The normal starting out point of that leadership is the office of Oriental Guide. The following checklist may prove helpful in evaluating potential candidates for the office of Oriental Guide. However, no thinking man would be so naïve or presumptuous as to believe that any one Noble could possibly embody all the virtues, talents, and qualifications which are set forth in the checklist. Nevertheless, the list has practical value…for self-evaluation by the Nobles whose ultimate aspiration is the office of Illustrious Potentate…and for advance evaluation of candidates by the voting members. 1. He should have good business judgment. 2. He should be friendly and outgoing, a good mixer. 3. He should have the ability to express himself clearly in language that will make us proud of him, rather than apologetic. 4. He should present an imposing personal appearance. 5. He should be able to hold his own and advance the interest of his Temple and Freemasonry in high places as well as among the humble. 6. He should be a devoted Mason and constantly promote the interest of Freemasonry everywhere. 7. He should be proud, yet humble. 8. He should have good Character and a past open to investigation. 9. He should be a leader, have good standing in his community, and be influential in its affairs. 10. He should be financially secure. 11. He should be in good health, full of energy, and vitality. 12. He should be able to devote ample time to his duties. 13. He should be a man who, when he appears anywhere in public, you will be proud of and not be apologetic for his shortcomings. 14. His wife should be able to understand his devotion to duty; realize that he is Potentate and not she; be able to dress and wear appropriate clothing, and be familiar with the social amenities. Remember she is destined to become Alzafar’s First Lady.
Nominations for Oriental Guide should be based upon thorough and accurate evaluation of character, ability, and interest. Remember, you are electing your spokesman and standard-bearer and the one who will represent you throughout the World. We have a great Talent in our Temple. Let’s seek it! Let us be fair and sincere. Let us get the very best we can.
