The purpose all stated meeting is to receive and ballot on petitions to receive committee reports, to discuss and take possible action on agenda matters and any such other business, as might come before it. POTENTATE Gary Radvansky I would like to thank all the Nobles, friends and family that came out and helped us celebrate our Nobles Masquerade Ball. The event attracted over 600 people to start this year off with a bang! If you missed it, there were jugglers, stilt walkers, a fire eater and even a beautiful silk ribbon acrobatic performer with amazing skills to set the mood of the party. The food was top grade and Wednesday & “The Show” had everyone dancing the night away. It was a great time had by all. We were honored to have in attendance our Imperial Sir Richard Burke and his Lady Judy. He is our current Imperial Captain of the Guard for Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children. Imperial Sir and his Lady had a great time and were very impressed with the generosity of our Nobility and friends. They felt like family and we are truly appreciative. During the evening, our 2017 Deputy Potentate, Charley Davenport, was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Divan & Directors Staff for his heartfelt dedication and commitment he has blessed us over many, many years. Thank you Charley, we love you! At our last stated meeting, our budget for 2017 was presented and approved by the Nobility. Our budget this year is a balanced budget with one difference; focus on the Nobility. We are planning events this year to bring a strong positive message for our fraternity. Together we will make changes that will shed light to our community and Masonic Brothers that will help our membership grow. Positive actions and influence bring positive change. Our mission will hold strong. In addition, we must make changes and be more proactive when it comes to maintaining and sustaining our assets. Initially, plans for our facility are being

managed to upgrade and enhance the appeal of our restrooms, as well as getting our facility ADA compliant. More projects are still in planning stages so more details to come.
Beautification projects are being developed so our facility will be more appealing and pleasing to the eye. It was four years ago when I asked for a few Nobles to come out and paint the curbs. We had over 50 people participate and we not only painted all the curbs, but also painted inside the ballroom. It was amazing to see everyone come together! “Working Together Making A Difference” is the motto this year. So whether it is a dance, a picnic, a project party, a hospital event, a Masonic event or a community event……..let’s pull together and have fun. I want to thank everyone for the trust you have given me to be your Potentate. It is an honor I respect and do not take lightly. This is YOUR year, the year of the Noble, the year of Fraternity, the year of Family.... so let’s have fun and represent well! Cheryl and I want to thank you for all you do for our children and our Shrine. Your support is so overwhelming and we are so proud to be by your side. It is truly an honor and a privilege to serve you. May God bless you all!
CHIEF RABBAN Jason Triggs Congratulations to Noble Brian Arndt for being selected as Alzafar Shrine’s Shriner of the month for February. Noble Arndt joined us last year and has already immersed himself in the workings of our temple and has become a great contributor to our philanthropy. After joining the NEMNUF unit, Noble Arndt worked very hard perfecting the art of applying his clown makeup. He would apply it and immediately wash it off just to reapply it again, showing hours of dedication to his new unit. Last month, one of our beloved Nobles fell very ill and was admitted to the hospital. As his son was sitting in the hospital cafeteria, he looked up and saw Noble Arndt’s friendly face waiving at him. Noble Arndt happened to work at the hospital and took it upon himself to check in on our ill Noble at least three times a day, staying in constant contact with the family. Noble Arndt’s actions brought comfort and encouragement to the family when they needed it the most. He has been referred to as an angel by the family for his selfless acts. Noble Arndt is a perfect example of a Mason who is true to his obligations. If you missed the Nobles Ball you missed out on a great party. Our Illustrious Potentate and First Lady Cheryl hosted a fantastic event complete with many surprises. My family and I all had a great time and thank the both of you very much for all your efforts. Lastly, the Alzafar Shrine Circus train is moving out of the station. Our telemarketing efforts are doing great and plans are starting to take shape. This year’s show dates are: New Braunfels–Oct. 20th, San Antonio–Nov. 2nd-5th, Kerrville–Nov. 6th. Pass the dates along and stay tuned for ticket information.

ERIC A. DEWALT Assistant Rabban What a great year this is turning out to be!! Suzy and I want to say what an outstanding beginning of the year this has turned out to be. Cheryl and Gary have hit the ball out of the park on every event so far. Our Divan MidWinter was second to none. The Nobility Ball was such an elegant event and we have yet to attend Laredo but I know it will be over the top. Congratulations to the two of you. I know they have a tremendous amount of help and for that I applaud our Nobility and all the work that they have put in. Our Potentate and his Lady our amazing leaders and I am honored to be on your Divan and I have some very big shoes to fill. That being said, I would like to thank each and every unit so far for the support and enthusiasm that is being put forth towards National Pancake Day at IHop. Everyone’s efforts to help make sure this one day contribution drive for our children at Shriners Hospitals is a success is truly overwhelming and for this I am grateful. Let’s have fun while our helping kids. I hate to start a second event before accomplishing the first but the Hospital Gala will be here before you know it. This tradition is one of the major fundraisers for hospitals here in Alzafar. Suzy and I have already started on this awesome event and with your help, it is going to be outstanding. More news to come in the near future.
HIGH PRIEST AND PROPHET Marty Bartlett We have had a very busy few weeks. What a fabulous Potentate Ball was thrown for us by Illustrious Sir Gary Radvansky! That should be a good precursor for all the fun things that Gary has in store for us this year. I hope you also got to attend the Laredo parade and the Masonic Youth Brunch March 4th. It is always great to be amongst our brothers in Laredo and our brother Masons for the Annual March to the Alamo. Our ties with our fellow Masons is critical and the remembrance service at the Alamo and the Grandmaster’s Conference and Brunch that follows are all great ways to remind us from whence we came. The Divan will be looking for opportunities to visit lodges throughout the community to strengthen our ties with the cornerstone of our organization–Masons. Mark your Calendar

ORIENTAL GUIDE Travis Elmendorf 2017 is off like a rocket and March is already here. My big toes are officially wet. In February, we attended the TSA Divan Midwinter. I was introduced to some great fellow Nobles in their leadership roles of the other Texas Shrine Temples and several remarkable men that make up the Imperial line. Two things that I came away with from this meeting: First-our Illustrious Sir Gary Radvansky is right on track with his idea of promoting Family, Fun & Fraternity this year. For this is exactly what those two days of brainstorming uncovered. Second-that the sly ones are not only outside your circle of trust, but also within it. Thank you, fellow Divan members, for making it a memorable occasion. The idea about writing of the past as it’s the future and guessing about the future still kind of eludes me. So, I will stick to things that are within my sight, the Children’s Easter Party. I thank the units that I have visited for the continued roles and support in assisting with these events. I look forward to meeting with the remainder of the units and members as I build up this program. Let not your mind sit idle, OG Round Table meetings are open to all. We meet the 4th Tuesday of every month. Thank you Alzafar for the support, trust, and love that you have afforded me in this short time as your Oriental Guide.
TREASURER’S OFFICE Ron Trine February and March were very busy months and flew by so quickly. We are nearly in Q2, the time is moving way to fast. I hope you too had a terrific first few months. Thanks to all for voting in, your 2017 budget. I know you will start to see great changes very quickly. Please come out and support your local blue lodges each month. The more we can help them increase their membership, the more opportunities we will have to do the same. April will be another month with many activities beginning with the Kids Easter Party on the 9th of April. Please help our “World’s Greatest OG” and his Lady have a great event, come out and enjoy the day with your family. April 16th will be Sunrise Service and pancake breakfast held at camp. Director’s Staff is ready to pull off yet another great feed. Please remember, you do not have to own a cabin to enjoy camp and attend their activities. This particular event, while early, is FREE. Hard to beat that. I hope to see you there. As always, I am proud to serve you and if there is anything I can help you with, please contact me. RECORDERS CORNER T-Bone Tommy Leverett I have heard from Nobles that they have not received their 2017 dues card so I thought I better remind everyone of the new procedure. Starting in 2016, we no longer mail our nobles their dues card from Alzafar. The cards come out of Imperial. In 2017, you will not receive a new card, but you will receive a 2017 sticker for you Shrine card. If you have already paid your 2017 dues and have not received a 2017 sticker we have them in the office. Don’t forget on the back of your Shrine dues card we have the 800 # to refer a patient to our hospitals. So, the next time you see a handicap child, make a call and see if our hospitals can help. If you have a place at Camp Alzafar, you know that the Camp Lease, currently $500 per year, is due at the beginning of the year, no later than January 1st. Every month you are late it increases by $100. Did you also know that you must be a Noble in Alzafar in good standing to own a place a Camp? Did you know your Blue Lodge Dues must be current to own a place at Camp? Finally, if you sell a place at Camp the paperwork must be completed in our office so we can verify all the above information. If you place is up for sale you are required to keep paying the Camp Lease and Taxes until the property is officially sold. The Camp Alzafar repairs on the roofs should start in February and take about two weeks to finish. We have the insurance money in the bank and our committee has found a great roofing company. Speaking of insurance claims, I filed a claim on our digital sign lasts April and I am happy to say we finally have an initial check for $145,000 coming our way. Please note that is not the final payment. The project will probably come in at around $160,000 with the balance being paid (less our $1,000 deductible) upon the completion of the work. Your Board of Directors has worked hard to make sure we get a sign with all the latest technology and that will let the public know we open for business. My door at the Shrine is always open if I can do anything for you or your Unit/Club. Alzafar Shrine Rocks & so do you!
MEMBERSHIP By: Alfred T. Rapoza I was delighted when I was asked to be the Chairman of the Membership Committee of the Alzafar Shrine. My thanks to Illustrious Sir Gary Radvansky and the Divan for their confidence and support. The work in front of me will be long and time consuming, but the result is we will build our membership. I am asking all Nobles to speak to their Blue Lodges and seek potential candidates-even if only one, that is one member more than we originally had. Nobles, I am asking for your help to increase our membership. Since I began in this position last week, I have contacted 11 possible new members. I hope to initiate them soon as new Nobles. Together we can make our membership grow. Nobles, I believe in our fraternity and know we will be better and stronger, but we all need to pull our resources together. There is an unattributed quote which says, “The definition of ‘Insanity’ is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results.” This often used quote is especially applicable to today’s Shrine Center Membership Programs and quite possibly to all of Shriners International. More importantly, however, there should be an addendum added to this over used axiom which reads, “Do you understand why you are doing what you are doing!” Moreover, doing anything just because the guy before did it is completely nuts if you have not thought to ask; “Did the guy before me get the results he wanted?” Our Membership Program starts with Shrine Masons. I am looking for Shriners who are proud and active members of their Blue Lodge. If that is you, our Illustrious Potentate would like to make a note of that with not only with Alzafar but more importantly with your Lodge members. Please email me at atr674@att.net

ALZAFAR ROUSTABOUTS By: Charley “D” WOW! At our February meeting, we gained 6 new members which is really great as we need all the help we can get, especially at Circus time as well as when we work on other projects. Part of our reason for existence is to work the Circus, but we also do projects that we are asked to do by the Potentate that will improve our Shrine Center facilities. So we are happy to have new members as they may possess skills that will help us do these projects as they occur. For the new Shriners, we, the Roustabouts, meet the first Wednesday of each month at 5 P.M. for relaxation and happy hour, then we eat at 6 P.M. followed by a very brief meeting for business and then home very early in the evening. This is in our room in the building at the rear of the Temple building. We would like to see some new faces join us so come on out and try us as you might like us and what we do. No dues are required for our unit! We are a parade unit thanks to Hoagy Elmendorf who has taken our Circus Elephant “DUMBO” to many a parade for a lot of years. As a Roustabout, you are welcome to ride with him in the van as he pulls “DUMBO” through the parades. Thanks to George Celis and Hoagy for restoring “DUMBO” to its original beauty again. I know that everyone joins me in missing our beloved friend Johnny Achilles. No one put in more time and enjoyed being a Roustabout more than Johnny. He truly loved this unit as well as all of it’s members. He also was a long time and very loyal member of the Alzafar Patrol. He epitomized what a real Shriner is and should be. For those of us that have health problems, we ask that the Supreme Grand Master above lay his healing hand on us for a speedy recovery. So remember whenever you have gained a new friend you have become a richer person. Life is wonderful, so enjoy it!
ALZAFAR ROD & GUN CLUB By: Charley “D” We still need your help if we are to survive as a unit of Alzafar Shrine Center. Our attendance has been dwindling and it is hard to find a caterer for our meals with less than forty people. We have to subsidize out of our treasury when we do not have enough attending. Some of us have health issues and other reasons for not attending. So take a look and we hope that you will come back and join us for a nice social event on Sunday afternoon that only happens once a month. For those of you that enjoy fishing trips as well as dove hunting and also if possible gambling trips to Lake Charles if enough interest is shown, we can make it happen. Remember it is up to you! So we hope to see you on March 5th with happy hour starting about 11:30 A.M. and the meal at 1 P.M. The food is great and home cooked by the Ladies of The Shrine. All you new Shriners need to come out and visit us as you might like it. Our sick, lame, and lazy report finds Ed Lee we hope out of re-hab, Al Gray had eye surgery and back problems and we hope is healed by now, Les Ratcliff out of re-hab and we hope back home, Bill Meyers with eye problems, as well as Floyd Carl with eye follow-ups, and me still hobbling on gimpy knees. Keep all of them in your prayers for a speedy recovery. Let’s remember that our officers provide us with the leadership of the unit, but it is up to us to make the club successful by supporting their efforts. So come on out and participate. CANYON LAKE SHRINE CLUB By: Tom Gilbert
I cannot believe that it is already March. We do not have any parades this month; however, we will make up missing no parades in March since we will have two parades in April. The dates will be printed in the April issue of the Achbar.
The Canyon Lake Shrine Club met on February 13, 2017. The President, Lee Stroman welcomed everyone. He introduced distinguished guests. A meal of spaghetti was enjoyed by all.
Our members will find out what are the problems with their cars when they drive their cars during the parade held in Laredo. Then it will be time to fix the old car into fine running condition and to shine the ole car up for the next parade.
Our guest speaker was James Leal, from the Sheriff’s Department Gang Unit. He gave an informative talk about how this unit was started 2 years ago, and how successful they have been in identifying and apprehending gang members. They have 3 goals: One is to get better documentation on gang members. Two is identifying and apprehending targets. Three is school programs.
The old Mustang of ours had to have old shoes replaced, err tires; therefore, she got a set of 4 new tires. She will be ready for all the festivities and fun. Man, I love the parades as you get to make new friends, meet with old friends, and enjoy the camaraderie with both. It is time to put our cars away for a while, and admire all the work done for the next parade. Until then so long. Oh, by the way Happy Birthday, Past Potentate, Tom Young! To quote Abraham Lincoln, “God must have loved the poor folks very much because he sure made a lot of them.” God Bless.
He explained that if a child sees his father in a gang and his older brother in a gang that most likely this child will end up in a gang. If this Gang Unit can have a program to bring to schools and try to break the cycle it would be a great asset. James also had a question and answer period after his presentation. CAMP ALZAFAR By: Luis Cardenas, Sr. February was amazing. We started the month with a Super Bowl Watch Party at Camp Alzafar hosted by Noble Luis Cardenas, Sr., and then on Saturday, the 11th, we enjoyed a spectacular Nobility Masquerade Gala at the Shrine Center. Then on the weekend of the 18th, a huge group of Nobles traveled to Laredo and participated in the Washington’s Parade. You can tell by now that this will be an amazing year for our Shrine and our Camp Alzafar. One more thing-we are working on the final details for our Camp Alzafar 2017 Season Calendar that will be provided next month. Stay tuned Nobles

with a great Super Bowl party, where while savoring the great munchies, and rooting for favorite teams, there were winners and losers. Six lucky attendees walked away $$ winners, and most walked out not happy with game results. A good time was had by all. President Todd put out the word to encourage volunteers to accompany him to the Annual Washington’s Day Laredo Parade. Over eight golfers participated making this the 4th the Unit has participated in. Arrangements and reservations are in motion for the 2017 Texas Shrine Golf Association Mid-Winter Golf Tournament in Fort Worth. Twelve Nobles have signed up as of this writing. Nobles, this is our duty to support our Golf Unit and represent Alzafar.
DIRECTORS STAFF By: Charley “D” The Alzafar Directors Staff is extremely proud that our Potentate for the year 2017, Gary Radvansky, is a member of our unit. He joins a group of others that preceded him a few that I can name, W.C. (Pat) Welch, Tommy Boothe Jr., Dr. James Walker Todd and Phil Knight-Sheen & Rick Reyes. So, let us as a unit give Gary as much support as possible for a successful year. We are proud that one of us is now our Shrine leader. A reminder that IHOP day is March 7th at the same location as last year, unless told otherwise. We need everyone’s help so please show up and work for a few hours.
The progress and spirit of any unit is measured by the activities and sprit de corps of its members. The Alzafar Golf Unit is among the largest and hardest working unit, and like most units, is always ready to welcome new members. Any Noble looking for another means of fulfilling a Shriner’s mission while working and playing, is invited to come join us on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 PM, in room 7. You are not a golfer you say, not required. If in the process you take a liking, there is always someone available to work with you through the beginning phase of a great means of fun and relaxation. “Don’t play too much golf. Two rounds a day is plenty.” FORE
The Second Section Ceremonial plans are still pending but we will have one for sure this year. Our sick, lame, and lazy report hit some rough spots in the past few months. Walter Koehler, our Director, had a hospital stay but seems to be improving, Ed Lee was in the hospital as well as in rehab, he still has bad back problems. Glenn Hoffman is recovering from back surgery as is Betty Gimbel. Shirley Smith is supposed to have a knee replaced on Valentine’s Day and we hope it was a success, Steve Rossman recovering from hip problems at Franklin Place his new assisted living home. I am still hobbling along with knee problems, both. Jack Elliff is also having knee problems. Let’s face it, we are falling apart little by little. Jim McDougall was hospitalized with his leg problems. Les Ratcliff headed for rehab after a hospital stay. Keep us all in your prayers for a speedy recovery. Bill Mellon celebrated his 94th Birthday on Feb. 25th. HAPPY BIRTHDAY BILL and many more. As always “happy trails to you until we meet again” and may the Good Lord above take a likin to you. THE BOERNE SHRINE CLUB By: Gary Bausell Nobles and Ladies: If you live in the Boerne, Bergheim, Fair Oaks Ranch, or North San Antonio areas and would like to join and fellowship with a lively group of fellow Nobles and their Ladies, then come and join us at the Boerne Shrine Club. We enjoy getting together for fun and fellowship, as well as working together for the Shriner’s Children’s Hospitals and Alzafar’s Hospital Transportation Fund. What’s Going On Right Now?: We’re preparing to work on March 7th at the IHOP at the Rim for IHOP’s Shrine Children’s Hospital Day with a free short stack of pancakes. We’re also planning for Shriner’s Hospital for Children’s Collection Day in Boerne and the surrounding area. It is set for Saturday, April 15th and will be coordinated from Kendall Lodge at 897 E. Blanco Road in Boerne. We’re starting the coordination to support the Boerne Shrine Club’s Gospel Show with the Marksmen Quartet as the headliners. The date isn’t set but it’s always a great show! If you’re a Shriner reading this and wondering what those folks in Boerne are up to, then come and find out! We meet on the third Wednesday of each month at different restaurants. This month on Wednesday, March 15th we’re meeting at the El Rio Mexican Restaurant at 1361 South Main (just North of Wal*Mart) at 6:00 PM for fun & fellowship hour and 7:00 PM for dinner with a short business meeting afterward. HOT SANDS BBQ UNIT By: David Brewer Howdy Nobles. We at the Hot Sands BBQ unit, would like to congratulate our new unit officers on their newly elected positions. President Brad Beseth, Vice President Marco Zuniga, 2nd Vice President Carlos Stanigar, Treasurer Robert Norman, and Secretary David Brewer. We would also like to thank and congratulate our event coordinator and Past President, Dennis Stevens, on leading us so successfully in our first year as a unit. A very special thanks goes out to our Chief Rabban, Jason Triggs, for installing our new officers. If any Noble is interested or has a passion for all things BBQ, friendship, family and fun, please join us on the 2nd Wednesday of the month out at the pavilion. We have a meal at 6:00 pm and start our meeting at 7:00 pm. We are all honored to have been asked to cook for the DeMolay Old South Ritual Tournament that will be held at Alzafar Shrine Center, March 31st-April 2nd. We look forward to providing meals to some great young men and future Masons and Shriners. The Hot Sands Unit will be entering the ASCO BBQ cook off and car show May 20th, where we will be defending our 1st place beans and 3rd place ribs from last year’s competition. Please come out and show your support for our unit.
HONOR GUARD By: Al Aranda As always, need to thank the line up that supported the Club at the Tropicano Hotel on one of those last-minute tasks. They really smoked everybody to include the Imperial personnel that attended that high speed event. We also need to thank the tremendous line up at the Nobility Gala. We have not had three ranks in a long time and we looked super. Nobles, if you haven’t paid your club dues and temple dues, you all need to break some records getting there and square yourself for the New Year so you can join us in having fun. We also need everybody’s help to support the Pancake benefit. Everybody usually has a lot of fun talking to the kids and telling grownups about our hospitals. While we are talking about kids, don’t forget to start planning for Temple’s Easter Party coming up in April. Let’s make sure that we support our new club officers and our new Divan Officers. Don’t be strangers, our room hasn’t moved, its still Room 12 and our Temple is still at the same location on loop 1604. May the Good Lord keep us safe and in good health and you all keep hanging on, till next time.
We would like to invite everyone (Nobles, friends, and families) out to our 2nd annual BBQ and Barn Dance on June 3rd, where we will have a live performance from Cliff and the Dirt Road Band!!! PROVOST GUARD By: Floyd Barker Our monthly meeting was held on February 1, 2017 with 17 members and 8 wives present. In addition to those members were Noble Kenneth Propes and his wife Lori. discussed the upcoming Mid Winter Shoot hosted by Al Amin in Corpus Christi on March 24th-25th. As of this meeting, we had 13 shooters who had sent in their registrations to participate. My apologies to Steve Aikens for erroneously identifying Rick Corbin in last month’s article as the person to contact if you plan to shoot. Steve is the Pistol Team Captain and he is the person that needs that information. Don’t forget our other shooting dates this year of June 14th17th which is TSA in Waco and September 29th-30th, which will be the Fall Shoot in El Paso. Marshal David Hadley informed everyone that our “unit ammo supply” was very low. This is the ammunition that is provided to our shooters at shooting matches. The unit voted to buy some ammunition from David Hadley that he had available and now the unit has an ample supply of ammunition for awhile.

Secretary/Treasurer Rich Orr made some new unit rosters and gave them out at the meeting, so if you weren’t present at the meeting, contact Rich to get yours. A big thank you to Rich; the updated rosters are greatly appreciated. If you have not paid your unit dues, please contact Rich and get that taken care of as well. Keep J.D. and Irene Pendleton in your prayers as they will be traveling to Virginia to be with their family. Their sonin-law who lives there has cancer and his prognosis is not good. Thanks, goes to Marshal David Hadley for the delicious meal of chicken livers, gizzards, hearts, gravy and french fries. He also cooked some hamburger patties for those who didn’t want to partake of the chicken. We are always looking for new members. All interested Shriners are welcome to join. Our monthly meetings are held on the first Wednesday evening of each month. Cocktails and visitation begins at 6:00, dinner is served at 6:30 and our meeting starts at 7:00. Wives are always invited and encouraged to join us.
ALZAFAR SENIORS By: David Wolfe The meeting of the Seniors on February 2nd was well attended with about 28 members and guests on hand. The meal presented by Grady’s was chicken fried steak with mashed potato and corn. Dessertswere provided by the Ladies of the members who are gracious and willing to provide each month. The meeting opened with the Invocation by Bro. Don Garrido, PP; who also read an inspiration piece to start us off on the right foot. (Continued on Pg. 12)

RV CLUB By: Dave Browne The January rally was held at Bluff Trails RV Park in Ingram, Texas. We hold a rally at Bluff Trails Park every January. The main reason for booking the park in the winter is they have only 30amp electrical service. The park is on a private ranch where they let in only one rally at a time. They have a beautiful rally house with a very large fireplace. The nights were cold so we keep the fire going every evening. There was a great turnout for this rally. There were some guests along with the 20 RV’s. The days were warm which allowed us to circle the wagons (chairs) and swap stories. New members bring new stories and we had a great time getting to know the new members. Several folks make the manda-

After eating, we continued the meeting with the Pledge to the American and Texas Flags. Introduction of Past Potentate Bro. Don Garrido, Current and Present Masters, Past Masters, Divan members and various Ladies organizations represented. There were no reports except the report of the Treasurer by Bro. Joe Estlack. The Seniors are collecting dues at this time and reminded those present that the reservation of the telephone committee calls requires a mandatory receipt of payment if you do not attend without notification to the group. Sickness and distress showed a report of a few members ill with the current flu going around and Bro. Ralph McLeod’s Brother is home with some of those symptoms. A 16 Year Anniversary was announced and we all congratulated them for the accomplishment. No old or new business was presented at this time. The Speaker, Dr. Ron Riens, was introduced by Bro. Tex Phillips. A program concerning Senior Wellness issues and suggested means of preventing major medical situations from occurring was well discussed and much good information generated. An active Q and A period followed. Benediction was by Bro. Don Garrido and information sheets were passed out by Dr. Riens. Our next meeting will be March 2nd, same time, same place. We are a very happy and welcoming group!
SHOTGUN UNIT By: Bill Willis It can’t get much better! Shooting and cooking out with fellow Nobles, Ladies, friends, and family. Our first practice of the New Year at Bexar Community Range had over 40 in attendance. What a great day! Special thanks to our hosts and master grillers; Roger and Karen Pfeil, Hoagie and Minnie Elmendorf, and Robert Norman, and can’t forget our pullers/scorers Gay and Skeete Smitha. Speaking of our lovely Ladies, the Shotgun Unit welcomes all of our Ladies to the stated meetings and monthly shoots. So come on out and enjoy some great company, food and fun. We had several ladies shoot at our January practice and showed they’re ready for a place on the “A” squad. Hope to see you all in Waco March 11th for our first competition of the year, the TSSSA Midwinter, where we’ll show the other Texas Temples how to shoot skeet and trap. I hear the Ladies are planning an outing to Magnolia Farms. Sounds like fun-filled day. Pulling 4 Kids is quickly approaching so please ask how you can support this important event held at Joshua Creek Ranch, May 13th. Volunteer your time, donate a silent or live auction item, or get a 5 man/woman/mixed team together to shoot sporting clays. THE BAND By: Richard Wallace Well, … we slept through a few months there. Since we were last here, the Band performed Christmas Carols three times at the Festival of Lights in December. The woodwind ensemble was comprised of Jason Gilmore on flute; Tom Kopcho, Billy Steele, and Marilyn Altvater on clarinets; and Richard Wallace on bass clarinet. The saxophone ensemble was made up of Tom Kopcho and Richard Wallace on alto saxophones and Joe Buenrostro on tenor saxophone. Our brass ensemble included Emilio Casarez and Eric Fenton on trumpets, Chuck Thompson on French horn, Richard Wallace on euphonium and Steve Nail on tuba. Next year we plan to have the entire band perform several times. CLOWN ALLEY By: Sunshine Greetings to all and hope your holidays were great. The Nemnufs bring the New Year with a great big bang. We want to welcome our fresh new Potentate, Yahoo and his band of merry Divan men for 2017, our new and improved unit officers. Leading the pack, is our very own oldie but goodie, for the second time as Pres. Patrick (PeeTee) Turner. Our 1st VP is a really big guy, so don’t mess with him, none other than Rick (Tater) Reyes, III. That’s right, his Dad was our PP. Our 2nd VP is none other than Jonathan (Auzzie) Strandlie. He is new to the line, but we have high hopes for him. Last but not least, for the 90th year as our Sec.-Treasurer Ed (Bugsy) Too Much. So here they are, wish them well and they may not come back after this year, who knows? February started off great with the Noble’s Ball. I must say this event by our Potentate was produced to the highest of events. From start to end, it was marvelous entertainment, libations, great food, background music while eating, the band outstanding, and our photographer was shooting pictures all over the place. Special thanks to Tim upstairs for the sound. All in all, the Ball was a great success. Thank you Illustrious Sir Radvansky for this event. It was super great. Laredo came and went this month and thank you Nemnufs who made the trip. It was great and we all had a lot of fun. March has a lot of events coming up, first is IHOP. A roster of who goes where was made up last meeting. Call Noble Reyes if you need a spot. We need all of you there. Midwinter is being held here this month also. Contact Noble Steve Starr for work assignments. Don’t forget to register if you plan to compete or plan to be a part of the conference, again call Steve Starr for this. Coming in June, Allstate will be in Waco. We are planning to go for the gold this year so hope you all will be there when practice starts. We want to be ready. Our Potentate Yahoo wants trophies this year, so let’s not let him or us down. We’d like to have all new clowns in on this so you can get your feet wet. Our Gala will be in Oct. The circus is in Nov. and the skit we used at Midwinter will be our circus skit. Let’s make this work guys. It’s going to be great. The clown picnic is set for June 3rd at Camp Alzafar, like last year. Our next meeting will not be at our same place but at Doggs Coffee Shop by the temple, same time. They sell hot dogs and stuff so hope to see you there on March 13th. Happy Birthday to all our Jan. and Feb. members and their ladies. Our prayers go out to all our distressed members and we wish you a speedy recovery.
Last but not least, congratulations and well wishes to all our newest batch of clowns. Your makeup, costume, your overall appearance and lastly your overall attitude in Nemnufs has been outstanding. As an older clown of four decades, I am proud to see that the Nemnufs are in good hands for another fifty years and more.
