San Antonio, Texas 78232 Dinner is at 6:00 p.m. on a first come first served basis. The purpose all stated meeting is to receive and ballot on petitions to receive committee reports, to discuss and take possible action on agenda matters and any such other business, as might come before it. YOUR 2017 DUES CARD WILL BE REQUIRED FOR ADMITTANCE to STATED MEETINGS. Here we are already going into June. It’s hard to believe we are now 6 months into 2017. I am so excited and proud of the Nobles and their families of Alzafar. We have all accomplished so much and having a great time in the process. We have had outstanding participation at our parades so far, and our membership team is doing a commendable job bringing in new members. Our Shrine is buzzing with great news every time you turn around. We have been visiting the Masonic Lodges as planned; strengthening our relationships, and even helping them with membership. Working together making a difference is helping us all. If we can help your Masonic Lodge in anyway, please just ask and we will be there. The initial improvement stages for our Shrine are continuously taking place. The trees are trimmed, the new parking lights are brilliant, the power washing on the building is taking place, and our sign is finally being resurrected. The restroom remodeling project is scheduled for the last two weeks of July and the first two weeks of August. Everything is working out as planned. Units are preparing for our upcoming Texas Shrine Association Ceremonial and competitions in mid June. I can’t wait and it’s going to be a great time. Let’s bring home those trophies!! We will be dark in July this year but we will be in full force on July 4th at the Seguin Parade. We had a special request from the Mayor of Seguin for the Shriners to participate in their parade; therefore, we will represent in full regalia for them. CHIEF RABBAN Jason Triggs Congratulations to Noble Rick “Tater” Reyes for being selected as Alzafar Shrine’s Shriner of the Month for May. Noble Reyes currently serves as Alzafar’s 2nd Ceremonial Master, a member of the Finance Committee, and 1st Vice-President of the Alzafar NEMNUF clown unit, all of which would be considered a full plate for most Shriners…but not for “Tater” Reyes! On top of these duties, Noble Reyes is a huge proponent of the Round Table, where he attends every meeting and voices opinions and ideas on behalf of the Nobility. He is also a big supporter of Camp Alzafar and does all he can to help preserve the history and traditions so they can be enjoyed by generations to come. Did you happen to catch the Shriners on television during the Fiesta Flambeau Parade? Noble Reyes played an instrumental role in communications with the Fiesta Commission which opened the door for us to have as many vehicles in the parade as we did. Even after all of this, Noble Reyes finds time to be a dad to his 4 beautiful daughters and a husband to his loving wife, Lady Amanda. Noble Rick “Tater” Reyes exemplifies the true traits of a Mason and a Shriner and is more than worthy to be the recipient of this prestigious award! Preparations for the 74th Annual Alzafar Shrine Circus are in full swing. The telemarketing campaign is running smoothly, the shows in New Braunfels and Kerrville are ready to roll, and contract negotiations are within the stroke of a pen with the Freeman Coliseum. But what truly makes our circus a success year after year is the countless volunteer hours of our Nobles, Ladies, and families. Committees are forming now. If any of you Nobles or your family members would like to donate some of your time in preparations for or during the circus, please contact me at jrtriggs@sbcglobal.net. And as most of you know, the circus is one of our biggest fundraisers to help aide Alzafar’s operational expenses. To assist in that endeavor, an ad sale campaign is underway that gives Nobles an opportunity to sell ad space in the circus program while at the same time earning a percentage of the sales for your unit or club. And who knows, there may be surprises for the top sellers of ad space. Please contact me at the email address above for more info. It’s shaping up to be another successful circus. I can’t wait for the show to begin! Show dates: New Braunfels–Oct. 30th, San Antonio–Nov. 2nd-5th, Kerrville–Nov. 6th.
ASSISTANT RABBAN Eric DeWalt Fiesta is behind us but the party spirit lives on. The Fiesta Flambeau Parade was a huge success and a big thank you to Rick “Tater” Reyes for getting us back in the parade. Who knew we would have so much TV coverage. Great job guys. The Clown unit w/the leadership of Jon Strandlie started off the parade with a great party set-up and tear down along side the amazing Host Committee lead by Doug Anderson fed the masses. The Honor Guard stepped us off looking very sharp, followed by our beautiful fire truck thanks to our Director Staff. Our trailers got decorated and Dumbo was looking so fine with her facelift going down the streets of San Antonio. The weather held off which made for an incredibly successful event. I am so looking forward for years to come. IHOP Pancake Day and P4K are two of the three big hospital fundraisers for our Shrine, with the third one being our Hospital Gala. All I must say is this is going to be one COOL event. So, all you Guys and Dolls that want to lend a hand, we will be orchestrating a Gala committee. There is lots of work to be done but lots of fun to be had. Please contact me via email (eadlaw@aol.com), if this sounds like your cup of tea. Please spread the word and save the date. HIGH PRIEST AND PROPHET Marty Bartlett You know what one of the best things about being a Shriner is (other than the friends, parties, food, events, etc.)? I truly believe we are tied into the greatest charity in the world. When you get to meet the doctors and the patients where lives are changed, it just reinforces what a great organization we are part of. I want to thank the Director’s Staff for putting together a bus trip to the Houston and Galveston Hospitals on May 2-3. It has been a few years since we have had a coordinated trip to visit the hospitals and we need to do it more often. The Director’s Staff should be commended for taking money that they fundraised and using that to subsidize a trip for over 40 of us to visit the hospitals. It was great to see a unit raise the funds and then put such a trip together. Walter Koehler deserves recognition for putting the trip together, which can often be like herding cats. Thanks, Walter, for making the effort to make that happen. Special thanks also go out to Bill Wassberg who was our hospital board member that set up all of the tours once we arrived. The combination of Bill and Walter truly made this a special trip that many Nobles and their Ladies will remember for a long time. A couple of other items to consider. The Divan would like to visit your lodge this year and explain to them how great it is to be a Shriner. In coordination with the excellent membership program that Al Rapoza is running, we would like a few minutes at an upcoming lodge meeting to discuss the benefits of being a Shriner. That will be our big Masonic Picnic and Chili Cook-off out at Camp Alzafar. We are starting to think about some fun events and prizes, so start planning your chili recipes now.
ORIENTAL GUIDE Travis Elmendorf Brenda and myself would like to offer a Happy Mother’s Day to all, wishing you Ladies the greatest of days. Fiesta, the 10 days of fun and frivolity, is now past. Always such a blast, but so glad it’s over. Despite the heat, we had a great time during the Flambeau parade. What a fantastic walk it was. A mighty thank you goes out to Noble Doug Anderson and his tireless host team as well as Assistant Rabban Eric DeWalt and the Nemnuf Clowns, the tailgate party was fantastic. If you did not get to meet them, OG Cody Paul from Al Amin and OG Matt Salgado from El Maida; Corpus Christi and El Paso respectively; send their heartfelt thank you. They were extremely grateful for the hospitality and the comradery that Alzafar showed them in allowing them to participate in the Flambeau parade. I am looking forward to working with them and our other state counterparts in the days to come. If you haven’t been able to attend the OG Roundtable meetings, you are missing out. It is a great place to bring up your ideas and thoughts for future endeavors. Next meeting is scheduled for: Tuesday 23 May, 7 pm in the Nemnuf room. See ya there!! Speaking of the future-about 10+ years ago the wine market exploded with smaller wineries and new flavors and different variants. Spirits soon followed with all their many new flavors and styles. Though always on the fringe and hidden by the “Big Three”, craft beer finally broke out and has come to the forefront, the time of the homebrewer has returned. So far, 6 Temples have initiated homebrew units. The Texas Shrine Homebrewers Association will be competing at this year’s TSA in Waco. Any Nobles that have a love for beer or would like to further educate their beer palate and explore the idea of creating Alzafar’s very own Homebrew Unit please look me up. A new article will be appearing shortly in our very own Achbar. It is to be an educational/instructional as well as informative one. As this Oriental Guide furthers his instruction and knowledge, I would like pass on this information to the Nobility, an Alzafar University, if you will. So, if there is any topic that you would like to hear about or have clarification on, I would gladly address the subject. Tell next month, OG out.

TREASURERS OFFICE Ron Trine This will be a very short note. I hope you continue to notice the many committed capital improvements, which other than the remodel is about complete. We are really looking good!!!!! And our rentals have already started in increase. Please come out and support your local blue lodges each month. The more we can help them increase their membership, the more opportunities we will have to do the same. I still need your assistance on record keeping issues. At this writing, there are still three units who have not submitted their A&B report and are now subject to dissolution by the potentate. I would like to compliment and congratulate the Director’s Staff on a well-planned and attended two-day trip to both Houston and Galveston Hospitals. The bus was full and everyone in attendance learned a tremendous amount, along with having a great time with each other. We are now in the beginning of Summer, where has the last 6 months gone to. I hope to see all of you in Waco for All State this month. A Great time should be had by all. As always, I am proud to serve you and if there is anything I can help you with, please contact me. RECORDERS CORNER T-Bone Tommy Leverett Calling all Nobles. When was the last time you participated in a Shrine Parade? Please come out and represent your Unit or Club. A good friend of mine once wrote for the Boerne paper. Ed Davis once wrote an article and said you don’t have a parade without a Calliope and the Shriners. The public really does appreciate the Shriners coming out and participating in the parades in and around San Antonio. Doug Anderson and his host team do a great job feeding us breakfast or lunch at the parades. So, get off that couch and come join your fellow Nobles at the next parade. Come join us and show the public why Shriners have so much fun. Repairs around the Temple. The trees around the front of the property have been trimmed and they look great. Our new outside parking lights with LED’s have been installed for your safety. The old digital sign has been removed and the new Digital Sign will be up and running soon. Camp Alzafar Cabin/Trailer owners. Did you forget to pay you Kendall County Property Taxes? We have too many Nobles that are delinquent on their property taxes. Please check your records and make sure you are not on the list. We have a great relationship with the tax office and don’t want to make them upset with the Alzafar Shriners. Don’t forget to turn in your Annual Financial Statement (Old A/B Report) and a List of your new Officers for 2017. Check with your Secretaries/Recorders of your Unit. Next month I plan to print a list of the violators. Free advertising is available. That is right and we want to promote your business in the New Masonic Yellow Pages. As your Recorder, I get emails and phone calls for members that are looking for AC/Heating business, plumbers, electricians, realtors, etc. So, fax, mail, or drop by your information to the Shrine Office. We plan to go to press after TSA so get your information in ASAP. Come out and join us at the next event and find out why I say “Alzafar Rocks”!

THE ANTIQUE CARRIAGE UNIT By: Bud Martin I have not seen as much rain during the spring in many years. The nice thing about driving a convertible Ford Mustang is that if it should rain during a parade you can always pull over and raise the top up to keep dry. The only bad news is that your hydraulic system fails to work, therefore, you will get very wet!! During this month, June, we have only one parade. It is the Berges Fest in Boerne. The line-up time is 7:30 AM, start time is 10:00 AM. It is a very nice drive up Interstate 10. Come and join in on the fun. I hope to see you there.
MEMBERSHIP By: Alfred Rapoza Nobles, our membership is increasing, and thankfully the number of our beloved brothers cast asunder for the non-payment of dues is dwindling. During the previous five years, our Shrine has been in the negative column. I remind myself what one of our members once asked me about membership, “Why would a Membership Chairman follow the advice of anyone who has never managed to recruit new members?” I am pleased to announce that due to our recruiting efforts we are in the positive column, and, more importantly, for me as a personal goal, we are steadily bringing all those brothers of ours lost last year, up to regular nobility status. I supplicate each of you, with all the sincerity in the world, to remember this above all things; one day, I might be in a nursing home or maybe fighting some debilitating illness, I want you, my Brothers, and Nobles, to remind the membership chair of that lesson taught us all in the northeast corner of the Lodge Room!
Before I go, I want to wish Noble Buck Bourne all the luck in the world. I have enjoyed reading the many articles that he has written for the Red Roadsters Unit, the Golf Unit, and several other units in the Achbar. He reminds me of a quote that Thomas J. Watson made, “Wisdom is the power that enables us to use knowledge for the benefit of ourselves and others.” God, Bless You Buck and good luck to you. THE BOERNE SHRINE CLUB By: Gary L. Bausell Nobles and Ladies: If you live in the Boerne, Bergheim, Kendalia, Fair Oaks Ranch, or Northern San Antonio areas and would like to join and fellowship with a lively group of fellow Nobles and their Ladies, then come and join us at the Boerne Shrine Club. We enjoy getting together for fun and fellowship, as well as working together for the Shriner’s Children’s Hospitals and Alzafar’s Hospital Transportation Fund. What Did We Just Finish? ‡ We’re had a great Shriner’s Hospital for Children’s Collection Day in Boerne. We had a great turnout, not only with Nobles and their Ladies, but the Nemnuf clowns came and blessed us with great numbers. I take off my fez to them as when it comes to the kids nothing tops the clowns. We had our best street collection day in almost 10 years! What’s Going on Right Now? ‡ We’re getting ready for our Boerne Shrine Club’s Gospel Show with the Marksmen Quartet as the headliners. The date is Tuesday, May 30th at 7:00 PM. The location is Boerne’s Champion High School Auditorium! Be there for a great time.

BURNING SUN By: Antonio Calderon Hello, Nobles. Nobles, we made it through another fiesta without any problems. This was because we could come together as Nobles and work the fiesta booth and enjoy our time together. We would like to thank all those who came by to say hello and all those who worked behind the booth giving 100 percent always. The Burning Sun Unit continues to prepare for TSA competition in Waco. We will be proudly representing our Alzafar Temple this year by performing our kart routines with precision and professionalism. As we continue to improve our skills behind the wheel, we also grow as a unit and would encourage anyone to stop by and see us in action. As always, we would like to extend an invite to any Noble who would like to see what our unit is about. We welcome you and your family to one of our stated meetings held in room 5 every second Wednesday of every month.

CAMP ALZAFAR By: Michael Calloway Huzzah! 2017 Memorial Weekend is in the books. We had a blast; live music, great food and a good time were had by all. I must admit my respect for those clowns has gone to a new level. I want to thank all the Nobility, their Ladies, and families for coming out. It takes friends and family to escalate a gathering into an actual party. Camp looks great, the recovered river trail looks great, the river looks great. Time to sit back and relax. Well, yes and no. Camp 1st VP Luis, decided he wants another party. He claims the next party will be even better.
DESERT KNIGHTS By: Brad Beseth
Desert Knights are off to a fantastic start, and we would like to congratulate all of our new members. The Cornyval Parade was a success, and we were able to get a couple of our bikes into the action for everyone to see and cheer on. We welcome all Nobles who are interested in joining the Desert Knights to bring their ladies and kids to our unit meetings held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7:00 pm. Upcoming events are the Memorial Day parade in Bandera on May 27th and the Berges Fest on June 17th in Boerne.
Saturday, July 1, 2017, we will start off the 4th of July celebration at your Camp Alzafar. Watch the Camp Alzafar website for details. Looking for a little summer escape: Camp is here for the Nobles. Even if we don’t have a party, come up and enjoy the pool, the river or just the sounds of nature. I love our state parks, but come and check out your Camp Alzafar. Don’t say no one invited you. CANYON LAKE SHRINE CLUB By: Tom Gilbert The Canyon Lake Shrine Club met on April 10, 2017. President, Lee Stroman welcomed everyone. The guest speaker for this month was Dusti Butler. She is 13 years old, and one day while at a gas station with her parents, she saw some kids with old shoes that were duct-taped together. She decided to get people to donate shoes for the needy. So she started Operation Shoe Drop. The first year she collected 35 pairs of shoes, the second year she collected 124 pairs of shoes. This year her goal is to collect 18,000 pairs of shoes. She has started her own company. Her website is www.dusti-co.com. Our club members needing prayers are Al Wiggers–he had heart surgery, and Neal Koonce had a stroke. Please keep these people in your prayers. Our next meeting will be September 11, 2017. We do not meet for June, July, and August. Anyone wanting to come to our meeting is welcome to do so. DIRECTORS STAFF By: Charley “D.” The Directors Staff had a great bus trip tour of both the Houston and Galveston Shrine Hospitals. All that went had a very informative as well as the enjoyable journey. Thanks to those that helped co-ordinate as well as conduct the trip. The Shrine has had trips before, but it has been awhile since, and this trip allowed anyone the opportunity to go visit our hospitals if they never had gone or even if they wanted to go again. The Directors Staff deserves a lot of kudos for sponsoring the trip and making it possible. Our annual Directors Staff Hoedown was a great success as usual, and everyone that attended had a great time socializing, eating, libations, dancing and playing Chicken Bingo. If you have not participated in a Hoedown, you missed a lot of fun and fellowship. Thanks to our Ladies for a great meal at our May meeting. It is sorrowful when we join an organization that we do not support. I am not talking about financially but by attendance and participation. If we Shriners do not wake up and answer our call to membership, our beloved Shrine as we have known it will die. So wake up Alzafar Shriners and start attending and participating in Shrine events to keep our Shrine the great fraternity that it is. Try it as you will like it. THE DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS By: Richard Wallace The Drum and Bugle Corps is preparing for All-State in June. We are planning to change our program this year and if you would like to be a part of our new effort, come on out and join us on Thursday nights in Room 8 from 7:30-9:00pm. Our TSA Competition will be in McLennan Room 209 at 4:00pm. We are always looking for more musicians. WE DO NOT MARCH! Currently we are performing on brass instruments that are played in the band; Bb trumpets, Bb marching French horns, marching trombones, marching baritones, etc. We do have instruments that we can lend to you. We need low brass and percussion players. We are also need percussionists and we have drums for you to play. We are a very low-pressure organization in terms of expectations and very flexible concerning time commitment. Thursday evening practices in Room 8 start at 7:30pm and end at 9:00pm. We had a great meeting in April. We were honored to have guest speakers from the Disabled American Veterans. They shared the services that are available for veterans provided by the DAV. Anyone that is a Noble and a veteran is welcomed to visit with us and to join our unit. Our meetings are open to all Nobles and their families. Our meetings are on the 4th Thursday of each month in room 4. Our May meeting is on 25 May 2017. We look forward to seeing you.
the eyes of a clown. We were saddened by the loss of one of our best clowns and 50-year masonic member Julio “Rockie” Roque, known as “Rocko” the Clown. His services will be at noon, May 22nd at Porter Loring North followed by services at Fort Sam. Back to a happier note, we just had the Helotes Cornyval Parade last weekend and had a very good turnout of clowns. We are now making plans for Allstate in Waco. We sincerely hope that the NEMNUF can make the difference to prove Alzafar is the best “Temple” in Texas and help Alzafar achieve number one. We love our Potentate and also want to make him proud. Finally, we are very proud of our clown Paul “Wrong Way” Dawson for being Shriner of the Month. Way to go “Wrong Way”. Until next month...
ROADSTER RUMBLINGS By: el Rocko As Spring flies by the Dog Days of Summer are just around the corner. The Red Roadsters celebrated an excellent turn-out at the Strawberry Festival Poteet Parade and had a great ride with no break downs. This year the Red Roadsters were not able to participate in the Fiesta Flambeau Parade, but we look forward to next year with hopes of being back in the Parade in full force busting our tail pipes and entertaining the crowds. We were also represented in the Helotes Cornyval Parade again with no breakdowns, and were even able to assist one of our Noble Brothers from the Mini Wheels who needed towing assistance. We always remember that if it’s within the length of our cable tow, we will be there. Next Parade will be the Memorial Day Parade in Bandera. There is also chatter that we will be in the Seguin Parade on the 4th of July, and we certainly look forward to being there. The Red Roadsters are working on putting together a fund-raising event soon and we welcome any ideas that meet the approval of the Shrine.
NEMNUF NEWS By: Pat “Pee Tee” Turner Life goes on in the NEMNUF. We had a productive month of April with a full house at our unit meeting. As usual, we had a nice dinner before the meeting and the wives did a fantastic job that is appreciated by everyone. Our meeting consisted of discussions of future events and we prepared for the Flambeau. Thanks to our Assistant Rabban, Eric DeWalt, also known as “Weto” the clown, the NEMNUF was given the use of the parking lot at Eric’s law office. We put up tents and had food and a good time before the parade for family and guests. Thanks to Bobby “Ice Bucket” Miller, we tested the shocks and springs in his pickup with probably 20 clowns riding to the beginning of the parade. We had a good clown friend join us from El Paso, a member of their Divan and very good clown, Matt Solgado. The Flambeau was great and quick and the NEMNUF enjoyed it very much. Nothing compares to the laughter and smiles of a child as seen through

and we are expecting a large turnout. Our June rally will be held in Fredericksburg at the Quiet Creek RV Resort. This is a new peach of a park in the area, and we are looking forward to meeting there at the peak of the peach season.
ALZAFAR ROUSTABOUTS By: Charley “D.” We had a great turnout for our March meeting with fifteen hardy souls being there. It is nice for the fellowship we have with each other, and we encourage all of you Nobles that have entered the Fraternity and did not have a unit or even have a desire to belong to another group to come out on the first Wednesday of each month starting at 6:00 P.M. our happy hour time, and a meal at 7:00 P.M. so you may rest assured you will be home early. You might like us and what we do, and we predict that you will join our happy crew. At the present time, we Roustabouts do not have any significant projects in hand, so we are in cruising along as a social club. We will, however, become visibly more active during our annual Shrine Shrine Circus in November. We stand by always, awaiting the order of our Potentate should he need our talents for a Shrine project. We are proud to be one of the oldest units in Alzafar Shrine having been chartered in 1963. We also are the most inexpensive Shrine Unit to join. You are always welcome, so please come out to visit. We meet in the building located behind the Shrine Auditorium and across from the Directors Staff Room. So keep on smiling, and the whole world will laugh with you. RV CLUB By: Dave Browne The April rally was held at the Canton Civic Center and RV Park close to Dallas, TX. This was the TSRVA rally hosted by the Hella Shrine. My first time rallying in Canton was a great experience. We had 5 Shrine centers participate in the festivities. Lots of games and cards and renewing friendships with Nobles and Ladies we only get to see once a year. The competition went great with Alzafar winning several first place ribbons. Canton is a quaint city with quite a bit to do, and everyone took advantage of the shopping and restaurants. Alzafar will be hosting the event for 2018, and yours truly is the 2018 TSRVA president. It will be in Fredericksburg where there are tons things to enjoy. Come RV with us and please try to make every RV Club event next year. I will be looking to enjoy everyone’s company. The May rally will be held at the Pioneer Beach Resort, Port Aransas, on May 18-21. This is one of our best locations, and the club looks forward to strolling along the beach, not to mention the great seafood. We will be blessed with having the Hen-Hur shrine club rallying with us at this event,

SHOTGUN UNIT By: Bill Willis The Shotgun Unit is busy preparing for our most important competitive shoot of the year, the TSA, being held this year at the Waco Skeet and Trap Club on June 15th. After our big win at the TSSSA shoot in March, we’re ready to repeat at TSA. And once again the “Smokin’ Clays” will field three squads to try to bring the Presidents Trophy home to Alzafar Shrine. We’ve held several practice sessions over the past couple of months to hone our skills for TSA. But, we’ve also found that a shotgun unit exercise is also a great excuse to have a cookout and to bring our group members, ladies, family, and friends together for a day of fun and fraternity. Big thanks once again to Roger and Karen Pfeil, and Hoagy and Minnie Elmendorf, our resident “grill meisters.” The competition at TSA will include trap and skeet shooting, two of the three major disciplines of competitive clay pigeon shooting. The third being sporting clays. Over the next few issues of the Achbar, I’ll explain the fundamental differences in the three games, with this month focusing on trap shooting, or American Singles Trap to be more specific. Trap is the oldest shotgun shooting sport in America. It derives its name from the device, called a trap, which throws clay targets away from the shooters, eight to ten feet off the ground at approximately 42 MPH. Participants shoot at the targets from five positions, or stations, located 16 yards behind the trap house. The diagram below provides the basic layout of a trap field. Trap is usually shot in squads of five shooters. A round of trap consists of 25 targets per shooter. Five clay targets, or “birds,” are thrown for each shooter at each station, with one shot being fired at each bird. The trap machine oscillates left to right and throws the clay target in a random direction, presenting the shooter with a variety of going away shots. After each squad member has fired five shots from a station, all team members move one position to their right, with the shooter on station five moving over to station one, to shoot their next five shots, and so on. Shooting and breaking all 25 targets is a perfect round of trap. TSA will consist of two rounds of trap and two rounds of skeet for a total of 100 targets for each shooter. So, if you’re attending TSA this year, please come out and cheer us on as we compete against shotgun units from Temples all over Texas. Hope to see you there.

ALZAFAR SENIORS By: Roger Hopkins The Alzafar Seniors met in the Parlors on the 4th of May with 31 members and guests in attendance. The meeting was opened by our new President, Noble Daniel Schauer; an invocation was given by our new Chaplain, Noble Donald Garrido, PP, who followed in the footsteps of our revered former Chaplain, Dan Mason, and offered a little humor before giving his blessings. We then rendered honors to the America and Texas flags and went on to enjoy another delicious lunch of BBQ Chicken and all the fixings, followed by an extensive array of desserts provided by our members. After lunch, we were given a very informative presentation by Mr. Forrest Miller, the Diversity Recruitment Specialist for CASA (Child Advocates of San Antonio). As he identified to us, CASA is the local group of a nationwide program designed to assist the courts in the appropriate handling of children under the control of the courts. His literature indicates that as many as “130 children a month are removed from their homes in Bexar county”. Those with a CASA volunteer are placed in “a safe, permanent home, 8 months faster” than those without and are less likely to “spend time in long-term foster care.” This is a program that may interest many of our Shrine Families. The program was very well received by our members, and we want to thank our Vice President, “Tex” Phillips for obtaining another great speaker. During our business meeting, we recognized birthdays and anniversaries, sickness and distress and any issues facing the members. Joe Estlack gave a very positive Treasurers
HOSPITAL CORPS By: Roger Hopkins It’s been a while since we have had an article in the Achbar, so I’d like to take this opportunity to catch everyone up. So far this year we’ve supported a clinic in Laredo, participated in parades in Poteet, Fiesta and Helotes with many or to come. We’ve added two new members to our ranks, Bill Liles and Dan McDonald. We’ve hosted our lady’s night at the Golden Corral and taken numerous trips to Houston and Galveston. We continue to have a good turnout for our members at Stated Meetings, to include the many Clubs that our members support. We remain committed to providing the BEST POSSIBLE SUPPORT to our patients, and their families, and we’re proud to show our community what Shriners are all about. We look to those of you in our Shrine that are as committed as we are to come out and support our mission. Each of you can enhance that mission by just opening your eyes and ears. Should you see or hear of a family that can benefit from our support, don’t be afraid to step forward to find out if they need assistance. Advise them that they can contact the Shrine to get assistance, or better yet, get their contact information and let the office know so they can be contacted and the determination made regarding assisting them. Remember “never was a man so tall as he who stooped to help a child” and in many instances, this means helping the family of that child. We are always looking forward to the next parade. We almost always have extra seats on the Fez float. If you would like to ride with us, come on out.

Our Grand Council will be held this May 20th thru the 26th in Toledo Ohio at the Kalahari Resort . Next report will have pictures of the visit of our Ladies there. The units all take turns, but I have found we all love going and participating. What I love most is not just how much they love our cooking, and how much fun we have doing it.
