While we’re celebrating more than 200 talented filmmakers who are attending and showing here at the festival, we would like to take a moment to honor these industry pioneers.

Teddy and Doris Solomon built a theatre empire. What began as after-school work in his family’s silent movie house became an active career in the industry that spanned seven decades. With Doris by his side, Teddy grew his family’s single movie screen into more than 600 theaters and drive-ins spread across the country.

He was elected president of the National Association of Theatre Owners, where he led the reform of film bidding practices that continue to shape the industry. He built and opened the first stadiumstyle megaplex in Greater New Orleans. He was also the catalyst that established the popular tax incentive programs for filmmakers that have made Louisiana known as “Hollywood South.” ®

The idea for the New Orleans Film Festival began, as we imagine so many great ideas must have, in the late ‘80s in the back of a video store. A group of passionate local cinephiles, who dreamt of greater access to independent cinema, hatched a plan that would found the New Orleans Film Society and its flagship festival.

We now invest in a community of talented filmmakers who convene at NOFF and beyond through a growing number of filmmaker-focused initiatives. These include a nationally recognized mentorship program for filmmakers of color, an immersive lab to enhance the skills of emerging Southern producers, a creative conference, a pitch competition, and an industry exchange.

Our programmers, with the help of a small army of volunteer screeners, reviewed over 6,000 submissions this year, and we are immensely proud of the quality of films, music videos, virtual reality and new media projects presented at the festival. The line-up represents some of the most exciting voices in filmmaking today, solidifying NOFF’s role as a place of discovery—whether it’s a first look at an Oscar® contender like Green Book, or an emerging Louisiana talent, a fresh new perspective, or a story rarely told on screen. We hope that when NOFF stands behind a stellar line-up from a diverse group of filmmakers, we can show other festivals across the country that programming for parity and presenting a top quality slate of films are not mutually exclusive endeavors. This year we signed on to the 5050x2020 Pledge, a commitment to gender parity and inclusion that will make transparent exactly who is submitting, making programming decisions, and guiding our organization. Statistics from participating festivals will be shared at Cannes next year. From a young age, Trombone Shorty has been inseparable from his horn. So when his mother, Lois, brought him to see Bo Diddley at Jazz Fest, he took it with him and played along with the legendary bluesman from the crowd. Diddley took notice and had

But films aren’t all that’s free at #NOFF2018–– anyone can attend a number of Filmmaker Forum events, and visit our festival HUB to experience our music video lounge, virtual reality and new media projects (see pages 79, 80 + 81).

Buckjumping will be NOFF’s largest free screening to date, inviting an audience of 600+ to the historic Orpheum Theater for a celebration of New Orleans’ unique and storied dance traditions. Connecting Filmmakers to Career-Advancing Opportunities The annual NOFF Industry Exchange, taking place over the course of three hours during a designated time and place, facilitates 300+ curated, one-on-one meetings between filmmakers and industry leaders over opening weekend of NOFF. The Industry Exchange seeks out upwards of 30 industry professionals each year to take part, representing funders, agents, grantors, distributors, broadcasters, programmers, and others who are interested in connecting with the diverse, emerging filmmakers at the festival. During these meetings, industry representatives offer advice, help develop ideas, share resources, and play a critical role in broadening the networks of filmmaker participants. The Exchange seeds relationships that grow over time, opening doors for NOFF filmmaker alumni and exposing the greater industry to the talented cinematic voices showcased at NOFF. It is a particularly impactful initiative for exhibiting Southern filmmakers, for whom these opportunities to make face-to-face connections with the broader industry are fewer and farther between. Since the start of the Industry Exchange three years ago, the festival has facilitated over 900 one-on-one meetings, serving 373 filmmakers.

ScreenWriting Competition The New Orleans Film Festival launched its inaugural Screenplay Competition this year, drawing more than 700 screenplay submissions in four categories: Feature, Short, Episodic, and by Louisiana screenwriters. The pool was pared down to 28 finalists, and the winners in each category will be announced during a special reception in the VIP Lounge at the New Orleans Advocate on Saturday, October 20, from 1:00pm to 2:30pm, where the public is invited to celebrate these writers and their work.

South Pitch Founded in 2011 in response to the dearth of pitching opportunities for Southern filmmakers, South Pitch offers a chance for Southern writers, directors, and producers to practice the art of pitching in front of decision makers—and in this case, in front of an audience of onlookers hoping to gain insight into the world of pitching where projects get funded and greenlit. In this annual series of competitions (one track geared toward student filmmakers and the other toward nonstudents) participants have a limited time period to pitch a film project before a panel of film professionals— funders, distributors, programmers—who offer on-the-spot, constructive feedback and select a winner in each round. The competition categories and the pitchers in each category are listed below. Winners in each category will be announced during a reception in the VIP Lounge at the New Orleans Advocate from 6:30pm - 8:00pm.

For the second year, the documentary competition is supported by the Tribeca Film Institute under the banner of the IF/Then Documentary Short Film Program. Filmmaker Development Labs

In addition to the annual New Orleans Film Festival, the New Orleans Film Society invests year-round in filmmaker professional development programs to nurture diverse voices in filmmaking in the American South. These programs are designed to build filmmaker networks, hone their craft, and develop sustainable creative careers. New Orleans Film Society produces two immersive labs—Emerging Voices and Southern Producer’s Lab—to develop diverse Southern directors and producers. The labs, founded on the principle that a diverse Southern storytelling landscape requires access to gatekeepers and a shared sense of community, convene more than 50 industry leaders for a series of workshops, panels, mentoring sessions, and networking events over several days. In 2017-18, our inclusive labs benefited 21 Southern filmmakers, 48% female filmmakers and 71% filmmakers of color.

Emerging Voices Since 2014, the Emerging Voices mentorship program has supported 25 filmmakers of color, connecting them to prominent industry insiders to broaden their networks nationally and gain invaluable feedback on their own projects in development. Emerging Voices engages a cohort of 6-8 filmmakers annually to participate in an intimate and focused mentorship and workshop experience during New Orleans Film Festival and throughout the year. Mentees receive guidance on their projects from mentors with relevant experience in their project’s genre and attend a number of facilitated networking opportunities. Samantha is a Belizean-American director/writer whose work is rooted in storytelling traditions of the American South and the folklore of Belize. She is an alum of the NBC/Universal Diversity Director Program and a recent recipient of the Belize Film Commissioner’s Emerging Storyteller Feature Film Award.

Project: “Little Lying Wild” (Narrative Feature) When an outcast girl with an obsession for stories is the only witness to a murder in her Belizean village, she has to prove that what she has seen is not an illusion.

A multi-media, communications professional, Mayaba has cultivated years of experience in various aspects of creating compelling storytelling and messaging. The focus of her interdisciplinary background remains anchored in her passion for radical black feminism, human rights, and social change.

Originally from New Orleans and now based in Shreveport, Lonzell works as a commercial director and cinematographer and is Video Production Manager at LA New Product Development Team. He has directed a number of music videos for Southern artists and is currently at work on a documentary short.

Zuri Obi is a Haitian-American filmmaker based in New Orleans whose work centers on women’s lives and the diasporic experience. Her short “Fucked Like a Star” recently won a jury award at Blackstar and is screening at NOFF2018. She also teaches filmmaking through COOL Cooperative.

Project: “Disable” (Documentary Short) Diamond Excell is a motivational speaker based in Atlanta who was born without arms, seeking to show the world that anything is possible.

Project: “Blood Peach” (Documentary Short) Wild peach groves grow full and lush along the Mississippi River, but the people of Natchez know the bloody history of the land that feeds these strange fruit.

ZURI OBI

Based in Baton Rouge, Abraham is a director by way of writing and editing for print and TV. His work explores humanity and race and he has directed music videos for some of Louisiana’s top artists. His newest short, “Jane” will screen at NOFF2018. He recently spoke about race at the Black Out Loud Conference.

Project: “Please Maintain an Awkward Silence” (Narrative Short) In a metaphor for race in America, a routine ride in an office park elevator turns unexpectedly foul for everyone involved. Marion Hill is a New Orleans–based filmmaker and photographer with roots spreading from Vietnam and England to France and the US. Her art focuses on women, world cultures, sexuality, and music. Her first film “Bird of Prey” screened at Sidewalk and Frameline. She studied film at Northwestern University with a focus in directing.

Project: “WandARlust” (Augmented Reality Project) WandARlust is an immersive, interactive, and self-guided tour of New Orleans, using photos, artistic renderings, and live action vignettes to explore hidden histories.

Project: “Mejanelle” (Narrative Feature) After ten years, three old New Orleans lovers–two of them recently married–meet in Southern France.

Born in New Orleans, Ashley’s multimedia artwork explores the complexities of black femininity through painting, collage, and animation. She has been an Artist-in-Residence at the Joan Mitchell Center and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and in February 2019 Ashley will mount her second solo show Ido at Larrie in New York.

Southern Producers Lab

The Southern Producer’s Lab is an intensive, pioneering professional development program for producers working in the South. Born of focus group research with filmmakers in 2016, New Orleans Film Society identified a startling void in the region for skilled, seasoned producers—a lack that is prohibiting Southern stories from being told and limiting access to wider audiences. The inaugural Southern Producers Lab was held April 23-25, 2018, in New Orleans. The immersive lab brought together 13 emerging, diverse producers from 7 Southern states (Louisiana, Georgia, Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, and Alabama). The Lab engaged the expertise of 25 industry leaders and successful producers to address the following aspects of producing: the role of a creative producer, pitching, financing, crowdfunding, building community in the South, budgeting, distribution, film festival strategies, tax incentives, social impact, and the sales process.

Hanul Bahm Atlanta, Georgia Hanul Bahm, born in Seoul and based in Atlanta, is a filmmaker and producer working at the intersection of external realities, dream lives, and inner truths. She has produced numerous shorts and transmedia projects. Recently she co-produced “Detonator,” a POV Digital Lab-supported online mixtape/discovery portal for underground and street artists. Makena Buchanan Austin, Texas Makena Buchanan is a Texas-based producer of fiction and non-fiction. Films he has produced have received support from the Sundance Institute and the Venice Biennale, and have played in festivals like SXSW, Rotterdam, True/False, and Morelia. He is currently producing the documentary Caballerango, his third collaboration with director Juan Pablo González. Robert Colom Miami, Florida Robert Colom is a Cuban-American filmmaker who has worked with Third Horizon Media and A24. In 2016, he started the film production and design company Conéme, through which he has produced content with the purpose of illuminating stories from Florida and the Latin American diaspora. His work has been acquired by HBO, HBO Latino, and PBS.

Andrew Lee Austin, Texas Andrew Lee is a film producer based in Austin, Texas. His first feature documentary DMT: The Spirit Molecule was released in 2011 (Gravitas Ventures & Warner Bros Digital). He then co-founded Ralph Smyth Entertainment and went on to produce feature sports comedy Balls Out (Orion Pictures, 2015), sci-fi comedy series Crunch Time (Rooster Teeth, 2016), and feature documentary Dealt (Sundance Selects, 2017). Katie Matthews New Orleans, Louisiana Katie Mathews is a filmmaker and ethnographer based in New Orleans. With experience in production management, directing, and writing, her primary passion is creative producing in documentary and hybrid doc-fiction films. Prior to work in film, Katie worked at global design firm IDEO, where she led qualitative research that used stories to inspire new systems in education and the public sector. Saleem Reshamwala Durham, North Carolina Saleem Reshamwala is a Durham, NC-based mediamaker. He was recently nominated for an Emmy for his work on implicit bias while at the New York Times, and Best Music Video at the Hip Hop Film Festival in Harlem (for G Yamazawa: “North Cack”). He has documented hip-hop in Croatia, Morocco, Senegal, Ethiopia, Fiji, Panama, and the Democratic Republic of Congo and has studied, worked, or hung out in 50 countries.

In 2016, artist José Torres-Tama undertook a project to repurpose a truck into a mobile stage, establishing the Taco Truck Theater and convening a group of actors, musicians, and performers to explore the impact of the immigration crisis in New Orleans. The film portrays the effects of colonialism, white prejudice, and familial breakdown while emphasizing these women’s unique characters, quirks, and social roles. The plot unfolds gradually, the centerpiece of which is the tangi (funeral) of the boy, where family members clash amidst a mournful, traditional tribute to ancestors. Trans FitCon in Atlanta is the only bodybuilding competition open to anyone who identifies as a transgender male. The film follows four men training for the competition at various stages of their transitions. Meanwhile, in Arkansas, Kennie begins hormone therapy while he tries to maintain a relationship with his girlfriend. Documentary Features Special Screenings This program offers a collection of documentary features screening out of juried competition, some of which have distinguished themselves at festivals like Tribeca and some of which are presented here as special presentations in conjunction with panel discussions. Here we present a range of diverse nonfiction stories, from racist memorabilia and America’s Vietnamese-owned nail salons, to struggling criminal ivory dealers in northern Kenya. Like all films in the festival, these films are eligible for Audience Awards.
