Milk-O-Rama - Try it at Home! Sponsored by: Mad Science of Austin & San Antonio Do you have milk in your fridge and dish soap by your sink? Then you pretty much have the makings of an easy science experiment to do with your kids. Here's the premise; milk contains fats and proteins in solution. Any change in the solution - for example, adding soap - affects these fats and proteins. By adding food coloring, you can observe the effect the soap is having on the molecules, which are twisting, bending and swirling into different shapes. This happens because the soap has weakened the surface tension.

What You Need: • • • •

250mL (1 cup) milk (whole milk, if possible) 3-4 different bottles of food coloring Pie plate Liquid soap

What you do: • Step 1: Fill a pie plate with room temperature milk. • Step 2: Add a few drops of food coloring to the milk. Make sure to use different colors! • Step 3: Put a single drop of liquid soap in the middle of your plate, and watch your milk colors explode! • Optional Step 4: Experiment with different

Onward to Camp We Go!! Understanding the true benefits of camp programs for children of all ages and the reasons to consider joining in on the fun. by: Taylor Abrahamsen Spring Break and Summer Camp programs offer an enormous number of everlasting benefits for social childhood development. Childhood routines generally involve a large number of education and extracurricular commitments making creativity and play more difficult to prioritize. The irony of it is, those skills end up benefitting us more in adulthood then many others we learn. Being social is a priority in many of the career fields of today and the future, but a harder skill to achieve with our ever-busy schedules. The pressures we put on ourselves even at the elementary age create all the more reason to take the time for an active and stimulating camp experience. Many opportunities abound for day camps, overnight, and extended stay programs exist in the Texas Hill Country. With programs centered on different interests, outdoor skills, sports and hands on education, and more children have the opportunity these days to stay ahead of the summer slide and even make substantial growths in time away from the classroom. Kids can learn and grow in so many beneficial ways, self-esteem, confidence, educational motivations, and social comforts, to name a few, creating quite the incentive to consider summer programs. Perhaps even more beneficial for kids is being active and away from the screen during the summer. Taking a break from screens provides a wonderful way for children to remember what it’s like to play together and have fun with friends. Often, it’s easy for all of us to relax on our off time, take things easy and spend time on devices. For children the danger comes to a head when there are 12 consecutive weeks of it. In fact, children get great relief from not having the constant distraction our technology produces and when focusing on being in the present, children learn to overcome anxiety and self-doubt. Both day and overnight camps provide a wonderful opportunity to do just that while staying healthy and active.

opportunity to grow in whatever field they enjoy, but meet new friends who share that interest, learn from each other and develop the independence to continue their passion at other points throughout the year. Having the opportunity to work hands on with projects gives children the chance to explore their creativity and remember the fun of learning. In the world we live in, children experience more social challenges than ever before. According to the CDC 7% of all children 3-17 are diagnosed with anxiety, surpassing each generation before them and showing a large percentage of the population in need of mental health assistance. Looking further into the social benefits, having the opportunity to reinvent oneself at camp can create all the difference for some children who unfortunately run into social struggles in schools. Being around other children allows for many positive growths including the opportunity to win, make new friends, and gain that independence of knowing who they are without any stigmas getting in the way. Exploring passions and learning in-depth, staying active and away from screen time, staying healthy, avoiding summer slide, and conquering social challenges can be benefits to look forward to with Spring Break and Summer Camp programs. Looking over all these life lessons to be learned at camps really helps to understand all the obvious and subtle benefits each child can gain from the experience and great reasons to attend camps this year. Be sure not to forget to ask your child what they would enjoy, do your research, and mix it up over the summer to provide the most stimulating and exciting environment possible to ensure a summer full of fun!

Another important value to consider is the large variety of specialty camps offered including a great fit for many interests. Programs offered include nearly the entire sports variety, horseback riding, river rafting, active indoor play varieties, art programs, science and technology programs, and more. Help stimulate your child with a program based on their favorite interest and create for them not only the
