This evangelizing syllabus has its beginnings in my “Mémoire” for the academic course at “Centre International Lumen Vitae” in Brussels, Belgium in 1976 with the title “L`Annonce du Kérygme” and evaluated as “Grande Distinction” by the board of examination. I presented it as a course with Father Salvador Carrillo and Pastor Bill Finke in July 1980 in Chilpancingo, Mexico. He is the craftsman who will mold you like a potter, to transform you into a new creation. In the short, medium, or long term, sin always produces death, all types of death. And it expands its deadly cloak to its surroundings. When Jesus told the man who was healed after having been paralyzed for 38 years, “Look, you are well; do not sin any more, so that nothing worse happens to you.â€? (Jn 5:14), he wanted him to understand that:

Faith leads us to act according to what we believe.

51 Faith

y

If we truly believe that Jesus passed from death to life, let’s climb into Jesus’ wheelbarrow which is his saving cross, to die to sin with him and rise with him to new life. If we do not live according to what we believe, our faith is reduced to a simple philosophy or platonic dream. Faith is the plug that connects us to the source of salvation and produces all the fruits of redemption in us. Faith is not limited to an intellectual assert but makes us live as we are:

Surrender to Christ completely, believing that he is the only Savior, your only savior, exclusive and exclusionary.

;LZ[PTVU`

The speaker gives testimony of God’s salvation.

Here, the speaker shares the experience of salvation that has transformed his or her life. Therefore, we have to live and express our faith to experience salvation. More than believing in something, it’s trusting and depending in someone.

The Eagle in our analogy, in order to improve it’s quality of life, had to believe beforehand that the possibility existed. The same is true for us.

Why did Peter deny Jesus? Jesus forewarned Peter that he would deny him three times that night. How did Jesus know that this brave and decisive man, who even dared to enter the High Priest’s palace, could deny him? Jesus knew that Peter would deny him, because the impetuous Simon had not yet received the Power from on High, the Holy Spirit. Since the Fisherman did not have that Power, as soon as a servant girl interrogated him, the poor man denied Jesus repeatedly, and even cursed Jesus. We have surrendered our life to our Lord Jesus, but the same thing that happened to Peter could happen to us, if we do not have this divine Power, called the Holy Spirit. Moreover, without this Divine Power from above, we will repeatedly fall and deny Jesus just as Simon Peter did. The speaker gives his testimony on how his life was changed when he/she received the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

Instead he limited himself to resolving to press on, to make his own the 6UL ^OV OHK THKL OPT OPZ V^U JM 7OPS ! It is precisely because of this personal experience of relationship with Jesus Christ that Paul henceforth places at the centre of his Gospel an irreducible opposition between the two alternative paths to justice: one built on the works of the Law, the other founded on the grace of faith in Christ. The alternative between justice by means of works of the Law and that by faith in Christ thus became one of the dominant themes that run through his Letters: “We ourselves, ^OV HYL 1L^Z I` IPY[O HUK UV[ .LU[PSL ZPUULYZ `L[ ^OV RUV^ [OH[ H THU PZ UV[ Q\Z[PĂ„LK I` works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus in VYKLY [V IL Q\Z[PĂ„LK I` MHP[O PU *OYPZ[ HUK UV[ I` ^VYRZ VM [OL SH^" ILJH\ZL I` ^VYRZ VM [OL SH^ UV VUL ^PSS IL Q\Z[PĂ„LKš .HS ! The opinion that was to recur systematically in history already existed in the community at Corinth. This opinion consisted in thinking that it was a question of moral law and that the Christian freedom thus consisted in the liberation from ethics. Thus in Corinth the term â€œĎ€ΏνĎ„Îą ΟοΚ έΞξĎƒĎ„Κνâ€? (I can do what I like) was widespread. It is obvious that this interpretation is wrong: Christian freedom is not libertinism; the liberation of which St Paul spoke is not liberation from good works. So what does the Law from which we are liberated and which does not save mean? For St Paul, as for all his contemporaries, the word “Lawâ€? meant the Torah in its totality, that is, the Ă„]L IVVRZ VM 4VZLZ ;OL ;VYHO PU [OL 7OHYPZHPJ PU[LYWYL[H[PVU [OH[ ^OPJO 7H\S OHK Z[\KPLK and made his own, was a complex set of conduct codes that ranged from the ethical nucleus to observances of rites and worship and that essentially determined the identity of the just person. In particular, these included circumcision, observances concerning pure food and ritual purity in general, the rules regarding the observance of the Sabbath, etc. codes of conduct that also appear frequently in the debates between Jesus and his contemporaries. All of these observances that express a social, cultural and religious identity had become uniquely important in the time of Hellenistic culture, starting from the third century B.C. This culture which had become the universal culture of that time and was a seemingly rational culture; a polytheistic culture, seemingly tolerant constituted a strong pressure for cultural uniformity and thus threatened the identity of Israel, which was politically constrained to enter into this common identity of the Hellenistic culture. This resulted in the loss of its own identity, hence also the loss of the precious heritage of the faith of the Fathers, of the faith in the one God and in the promises of God. Against this cultural pressure, which not only threatened the Israelite identity but also the faith in the one God and in his promises, it was necessary to create a wall of distinction, a shield of defense to protect the precious heritage of the faith; this wall consisted precisely in the Judaic observances and prescriptions. Paul, who had learned these observances in their role of defending God’s gift, of the inheritance of faith in one God alone, saw this identity threatened by the freedom of the Christians this is why he persecuted them. At the moment of OPZ LUJV\U[LY ^P[O [OL 9PZLU 6UL OL \UKLYZ[VVK [OH[ ^P[O *OYPZ[ÂťZ 9LZ\YYLJ[PVU [OL ZP[\H[PVU had changed radically. With Christ, the God of Israel, the one true God, became the God of all peoples. The wall as he says in his Letter to the Ephesians between Israel and the Gentiles, was no longer necessary: it is Christ who protects us from polytheism and all of its deviations; it is Christ who unites us with and in the one God; it is Christ who guarantees our true identity within the diversity of cultures. The wall is no longer necessary; our common identity within the diversity of cultures is Christ, and it is he who makes us just. Being just simply means being ^P[O *OYPZ[ HUK PU *OYPZ[ (UK [OPZ Z\ɉJLZ -\Y[OLY VIZLY]HUJLZ HYL UV SVUNLY ULJLZZHY` For this reason Luther’s phrase: “faith aloneâ€? is true, if it is not opposed to faith in charity, in love. Faith is looking at Christ, entrusting oneself to Christ, being united to Christ, conformed to Christ, to his life. And the form, the life of Christ, is love; hence to believe is to conform to Christ and to enter into his love. So it is that in the Letter to the Galatians in which he primarily KL]LSVWLK OPZ [LHJOPUN VU Q\Z[PĂ„JH[PVU :[ 7H\S ZWLHRZ VM MHP[O [OH[ ^VYRZ [OYV\NO SV]L JM .HS ! 14). It is the Gospel of the judge whose sole criterion is love. What he asks is only this: Did you visit me when I was sick? When I was in prison?
