EDITORIAL
I
t’s been a wonderful year for our publications; filled with lots of great opportunities of growth and many new friendships. Of course we have had challenges too; but we rose up to meet those! “DON’T BE AFRAID OF OPPOSITION. REMEMBER, A KITE RISES AGAINST, NOT WITH THE WIND.” — Hamilton Wright Mabie
Reflecting on the relationships I have developed over the past several years, I’ve come to realize that feeling vulnerable is not a bad thing. Do you know what I mean? Like when you first walk into a new woman’s group, and “THE BEST AND MOST you’re not privy to the relationships the women you are joining have already BEAUTIFUL THINGS IN developed; however, you participate, share and realize that these women are THE WORLD CANNOT just like you. They are concerned about family, community, business, even BE SEEN OR EVEN fashion and food. They may be struggling with something, have a story about TOUCHED. THEY MUST BE FELT WITH THE successes, or just like being with other like-minded women. I’m so fortunate HEART. WISHING to have the support of women I may only see once a month, however in that YOU HAPPINESS.” 2 hours there are moments of inspiration, motivation, laughter, support, and — HELEN KELLER yes, fashion and good food too. I encourage women to also seek this type of community; you’ll be happy you did! I hope you also get inspired through our publications. Our content is carefully selected just for what we feel moms (and dads) need to take care of what matters. The Family! To you, I wish the happiest End of Year 2015 and hope you are looking forward to 2016 as I am. With that, enjoy some wonderful quotes to fill your heart with good news and well wishes! YOU SHOULD KNOW ON THE ROAD AGAIN Taking a road trip this holiday with a baby in tow? You’ll be fine as long as you realize your baby won’t be any different in the car on a long trip than she is any other time. So, plan ahead. If she sleeps well in the car then make the trip around nap times. If not, then leave right after she wakes up. Bring plenty of books and new or forgotten toys, and divvy them out periodically. A window shade is helpful too. Be flexible and be willing to stop. Plan extra time for unexpected stops. And, be safe; keep that kid in the car seat. Happy travels!
WHAT MATTERS MOST
WHY THE HOLIDAYS SMELL SO GOOD The holidays smell so good, don’t they? Come to find out, these smells aren’t just good for our noses, they’re good for our bodies and brains too. So, breathe it all in. The smell of pine can decrease stress and lower feelings of depression. The smell of peppermint can boost brain power and soothe stomachs. There’s also thought it can curb cravings. And, smelling chocolate may improve memory. Might as well have a bite too because we know eating it is good for you. Enjoy.
As you work your way through your shopping list this Christmas, think about this. After the gift giving and getting is over, it’s the experiences that stay with us, not the things. Sure, new

(DON’T BLAME THE BABY)
toys are fun for a while, but experiences provide more fun and lasting value. So, experience the holidays this
First-born jealousy is a thing. And it won’t get better if you always blame the baby for things. Author Elizabeth Pantley suggests that instead of saying “We can’t go to the park; the baby’s sleeping,” say, “We’ll go to the park after lunch.” Or instead of saying “After I change the baby, I’ll help you,” say, “I’ll help you in three minutes.” Let your first born know that you understand his feelings and that you too are adjusting to the new situation. Then he won’t feel the need to act up for your attention.
GIFTS FOR THE ELDERLY Thinking about your elderly parents or grandparents’ Christmas gifts? What about a Light Therapy Lamp. Very often our older parents are not exposed enough to natural light and this can disrupt their sleep cycle. These lamps mimic the brightness of the sun, and stimulate the body’s production of Vitamin D. A bonus is that it also boosts their mood! How about a Brain Training Game too! These are fun and can help with cognition, awareness and memory. And of course there is always a good game of solitaire! Find some fancy cards, or have some made with your kids pictures on them.

year. Bake together. Have a Christmas movie watching marathon. Put on your PJs, pack some hot cocoa and take a drive to look at lights. That’s what they’ll remember – the time, the love, the attention. Not the stuff.

QUESTIONS
m from Mo
A Throwback to MomSolvers Q. What is an appropriate Christmas gift for teachers? What if your child has several teachers?
A. Give them all the same “homemade” gift! A. I like to make small packages with gift cards. Like a coffee cup with a Starbucks gift card; nicely wrapped in cellophane.
A. You may want to see if a homeroom mom has received a list of favorite treats each teacher likes. Then you and your child could bake together and package sweet treats creatively! A. I buy those large tins of popcorn and put a bow on top! Q. I scroll through my children’s phones often. My friend says
that I am being unfair and spying. I feel I am being a good parent. What would MomSolvers say about this?
A. That’s totally acceptable. As long as children are in my house, I have access to EVERYTHING they have. A. The bill is in my name, I pay for it… officially that makes it my phone! A. We need to know what our kids are doing on their phone and computers. Text messages, search engines, photos, etc. If we see something that could be a red flag, we need to educate them and remind them the dangers of social media, etc. You are being a good parent.
Q. In your experiences, what are the top 3 most important things I should teach my daughter before she leaves our home for College and moves far away?
A. You make sure she, 1. Follows her dreams, 2. Believes in herself, and 3. Makes good choices. Of course make sure she knows that no matter what you will always love her!
A. Make sure your child knows how to organize important documents. 1. Have them start before leaving home with a filing system for health records, birth certificate, etc. 2. Make sure they know how to do laundry well! 3. Make sure they know how to avoid the drug scene (saying no and not worry about what others may say). A. I think our teenagers should know how to speak up for themselves. Teach your daughter how to speak to another adult with confidence. Our young adults need to be able to deal with whatever they need to do, by being thoughtful and careful about their choices. You may let her take the lead while still at home. Do not answer questions for her, allow her to take control. She may look at you, and you should just tilt your head a little as if saying, go ahead and answer. And never correct her, at that moment. Thinking
Outside the (Toy) Box
The holiday season’s hottest toys have hit the shelves, and children around the world are eagerly adding these coveted items to their holiday wish lists. But how many new toys do our children actually need?
I 11 Creative, Non-Toy Christmas Gift Ideas for Kids BY ALYSSA CHIRCO
f you are tired of spending your hard-earned money on presents that get played with briefly and then tossed aside, keep in mind that toys are not the only type of gift that parents can place beneath the Christmas tree. When doing your holiday shopping this year, try thinking outside the proverbial toy box. You will discover many creative, non-toy gift ideas sure to surprise and delight children of all ages.
1
A MEMBERSHIP. When you invest in season passes or annual memberships, your kids get to visit the places they love all year long. Choose from favorite local destinations like zoos, wildlife centers, amusement parks, water parks and children’s museums.
2
AN EXPERIENCE. Instead of buying a gift card to yet another store at the mall, why not give a gift certificate or voucher for an experience or activity your child
would enjoy? Consider options like bowling, ice skating, horseback riding or indoor rock climbing. Or fill a bucket with tokens from a nearby arcade and promise to visit over the holiday break from school.
3
A SUBSCRIPTION. Popular children’s magazines like Highlights and Cricket help build literacy skills – and they also encourage kids to read for fun. Give your child one copy for Christmas, and then watch his eyes light up each time a new issue arrives in the mail or becomes available for download.
4
TICKETS. Tickets to a sporting event like a hockey or football game make a great gift for a tiny sports fan, especially when accompanied by a team jersey. Not into sports? Encourage your kids to embrace the arts with tickets to a play, symphony or ballet. Many troupes offer short, interactive performances geared specifically towards children.

5
LESSONS. From weekly dance or karate lessons to a special parent-child cooking class, kids love the opportunity to learn new things. Wrap up an item they can use for their lessons – perhaps a new leotard for dance or a personalized apron for cooking – to place under the tree.
6
A COUPON BOOK. Why not turn the tables on those handmade coupon books that kids love to give as gifts? Design a book of your own featuring coupons your children will be excited to redeem. Possible coupon ideas include: · A “Get Out of Chores Free” pass · An ice cream date with Mom or Dad · A “Technology Ticket” for extra time using an electronic device · A chance to stay up 30 minutes past bedtime
7
A HOMEMADE GIFT BASKET. Instead of buying one large gift, make a themed gift basket comprised of smaller gifts related to something your child enjoys. Raising an avid reader? Build a Book Basket filled with books, bookmarks, a book light and a gift certificate to a local bookstore. Have a movie buff on your hands? Build a Family Movie Night Basket filled with DVD’s, boxes of movie theater candy and, of course, popcorn.
8
A SHOPPING SPREE. For the teen or tween who wants a new wardrobe, a special shopping spree can be a much appreciated gift. Plan to spend an entire day together trying on outfits, having lunch and enjoying some quality, one-on-one time.
9
A BEDROOM MAKEOVER. Your daughter may have loved her princess bedroom a few years ago, but does the room reflect her interests now? If she is ready for a change, surprise her with a new set of bedding beneath the Christmas tree. Include accessories like curtains and pillows, and also some paint swatches so she can choose a new color for her walls.
10
A PET. Give your children the gift of responsibility this year by surprising them with a pet of their very own. Start small with a low-maintenance pet like a fish or a hamster, or go all out and get a puppy or a kitten. Keep costs down by asking relatives to give your kids the necessary accessories – such as food, cages and pet toys – as presents.
11
A GIFT THAT GIVES BACK. Not ready to bring an animal into your home? Make a donation to the World Wildlife Fund at www. worldwildlife.org and you can adopt one in your child’s name. Or buy a new pair of TOMS shoes as a Christmas gift and a second pair will automatically be donated to a child in need. When you give a gift that gives back, you also give your children one of the best gifts of all: a reminder that Christmas is about far more than just the presents – toys or not – beneath the tree. SP
Alyssa Chirco is a freelance parenting journalist and mother of two. Every year, she buys her children fewer and fewer toys as Christmas gifts.

WED 9 DMA INTERNATIONAL POP Runs through Feb. 14. International Pop, organized by the Walker Art Center, chronicles the global emergence of Pop in the 1960s and early 1970s. While previous exhibitions and prevailing scholarship have primarily focused on the dominance of Pop activity in New York and London during this time, this exhibition examines work from artists across the globe who were confronting many of the same radical developments, laying the foundation of the emergence of an art form that embraced figuration, media strategies, and mechanical processes with a new spirit of urgency and/or exuberance. This groundbreaking exhibition follows the trajectories of Pop and its critical points of contact with global developments in art such as Nouveau Réalisme (France), Concretism and Neo-Concretism (Brazil), The Art of Things (Argentina), Anti-Art (Japan), Capitalist Realism (Germany), Happenings, and Neo-Dada. FUN STUFF HOW DO SHEEP SAY MERRY CHRISTMAS IN MEXICO?
FLEECE NAVIDAD!
“It came without ribbons! It came without tags! It came without packages, boxes or bags!” ... Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before! “Maybe Christmas,” he thought “doesn’t come from a store Maybe Christmas means a little bit more!”
WHAT HAPPENED WHEN THE SNOWWOMAN GOT ANGRY AT THE SNOWMAN? SHE GAVE HIM THE COLD SHOULDER.
WHAT DID THE GINGERBREAD MAN PUT ON HIS BED? A COOKIE SHEET!
William Sonoma Signature Scent Potpourri An amazing scent for the Holidays or any day! IN A SMALL SAUCEPAN ADD: • 2 sliced up lemons • 3 springs of fresh rosemary • 1-2 teaspoons vanilla extract • Water to about 1 inch below the rim. • Place on stove and simmer on low.
– DR. SEUSS, HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS (EXCERPTED)
LOL WITH JAMES ESTES!
(WARNING! If you find yourself longing to go shopping at William Sonoma, please make sure to turn off the stove!)
GOTTA LOVE ‘EM Last year, my 5 year old and I were making reindeer food and we were missing one of the ingredients. I told my daughter it would be okay, Santa would never know. She replied, “What, he knows when I’ve been bad or good, but he won’t know we ruined the Reindeer food?” — CAMILLE, MOM OF 1
