Yesterday in Moulton
T
he history of Moulton, Texas begins in a land pristine with its beauty of native wildflowers, native animals, and breezes that blow as the season dictates. The native Indian inhabitants were more than likely Nomadic Tonkawas or Comanche.
One of the earliest Anglo settlers in the Moulton area was David Burkett who arrived as one of Green DeWitt’s original colonists in the early 1830’s The deed for his land grant is dated May 4, 1832 and covers a large parcel of land about one mile north of the present Moulton town site. Other colonists soon filtered into the region drawn by the deep, fertile soil and its bounty.
Part of the Texas Army camped on the East Fork of the Lavaca River. Further settlement came to an abrupt halt in October 1835 with the “Come and Take It” Battle at Gonzales. People who lived in what was to become the Moulton area got caught up in the Texas Revolution as did most Anglo-Americans living in Texas. On March 15, 1836 part of the Texas Army camped on the East Fork of the Lavaca River. Today a State monument on the present site of the American Legion Hall marks the Mose Chappel approximate site. They only camped there for a short time, just long enough for a small black slave boy of six years to meet and speak with General Houston. That young slave,

Mose Chappel, later went on to become one of Moulton’s oldest and most unforgettable citizens. No one knows exactly how the settlement actually got its name. One theory suggest that the community received its name from a native of Moulton, Alabama, who named it after his home town. Another suggests that the community was named after E. L. Moulton, a pioneer settler. Yet another says the settlement was named after the small circular patches of oak trees called “motts” that abound the region. The Old Moulton Cemetery was started on land given by H. R. McGinty and his wife. The first burial was about 1855 or 1856. In March 1981, the Old Moulton Cemetery Association was formed and now is under the care of the City of Moulton. In 1887 the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad Company laid out a spur from Yoakum northward to Waco. Soon after the construction of the railroad, a depot was built on the west side of the tracks and was called Topeka. It didn’t take long for the little depot to become the economic center of the area. In 1887 the first business opened in Moulton - a general store owned by Ed Boehm with later additions that also housed a saloon, barber shop and the Post Office.
demolished to make way for a new business, the Pundt’s Café. The cafe was later remodeled into the current Kloesel’s Steakhouse and Bar. Since its founding, Moulton has had only one newspaper. The Moulton Eagle has reported and recorded the history of the community since February 3, 1900. In 1913 F. T. Fehrenkamp erected a large 300’ by 70’ lumber shed beside the railroad tracks. The Lumber Shed is currently owned by Union Pacific and leased by Hi-Way Lumber Company. Samuel Butler and William J. Moore recognized the need for good educational facilities in Moulton. The Sam and Will Moore Institute was constructed in 1900-1901. The structure has withstood the ravages of 112 years of weather and is currently Moulton High School. On July 11, 1938, a newly-elected city council adopted a resolution officially incorporating Moulton as a city. The first Mayor was F. T. Fehrenkamp with Edwin A. Jaegglie,Vladik Boehm, R. B. Papacek, Joe Biehunko and Fred Pietsch serving as aldermen.
Parade in 1944
To handle the large influx of people arriving in the growing community during this period, the Samuel Moore family built the large 32 room Moore Hotel in 1888. The Moore Hotel was located directly east of the tracks and the depot. In 1890, Mr. C. M. Kotzebue purchased the hotel from the Moore family. The hotel continued under the management of the Kotzebue family until 1940 when it was

Moulton Community Park
& Orrin L. Winters Cabin The Moulton Community Park land was donated by the VFW; funding was donated by Knights of Columbus and the Moulton Chamber of Commerce along with a matching grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife agency. The Veteran’s Memorial was donated to the City of Moulton by VFW Post 6971 and the Ladies Auxiliary. Landscaping for the Veteran’s Memorial was donated by the Keep Moulton Beautiful organization. Wide-open green spaces, a large community lake and playground equipment give families a chance to enjoy a picnic and play outside.
Orrin L. Winters Cabin Originally a two-room cabin, this unique structure was built in approxamateky 1853 near the Lavaca River, two miles northeast, by Orrin L. Winters (1811-1902) who was a native of Tennessee. He lived in the cabin until 1873. About 1902, the oak log cabin was torn down by Adam Schutz and the materials were used to construct a barn and blacksmith shop. The blacksmith shop later burned and, in 1973, the barn was dismantled, moved to the Moulton Community Park and restored as a cabin. This structure stands today as a testament to the pioneer heritage of Lavaca County. MOULTON VISITORS & NEWCOMERS MAGAZINE

The American Legion celebrated its 100th birthday in 2019. Our local post 392 was organized in 1924 and was named for two local WWI soldiers killed during that great War. Post 392 was incorporated as a non-profit Corporation under the laws of Texas in March 1956. Its purpose is to support benevolent, charitable, educational, and missionary undertakings along with its primary purpose of supporting the needs of local Military Veterans and their families. It is the preeminent community-service organization. Members of The American Legion are dedicated to upholding the ideals of freedom and democracy, while working to make a difference in the lives of all
fellow Americans. Legionnaires visit patients in VA and other hospitals, pay final respects during veteran’s funerals and support various community events and activities. Membership is open to all individuals who ever wore the U.S. Military uniform. American Legion Hall History & Rental An American Legion Hall was completed in 1959 and has been continually upgraded to support community events. It is open to the public anytime upon request. Ignacio Morales serves up fresh fare in an easygoing atmosphere that’ll make you feel like family.
Bryan’s Daily Treat opened their
doors in Moulton in September of 2019, the brainchild of Ignacio Morales and his family. “We wanted to keep Moulton a happy place,” Morales said. “We didn’t have many restaurants (in the area) and we wanted one that had flexibility for our customers.” The restaurant may be a new one for Moulton, but Morales is no stranger to running a kitchen. He has built his passion for fine fare by cooking in several restaurants over the past 16 years, however his passion for his family is the real cornerstone of the restaurant. Bryan’s Daily Treat is named after Morales’s son, Bryan, who is autistic. “He barely eats because he is so particular about what he eats,” Morales said. “Since I was young, I’ve always loved to eat. My son’s autism inspired me to experiment with flavors and try to cook something he would eat.” Everything about Bryan’s Daily Treat is a family affair. You’ll find Morales’ wife, Cecilia, and their children, John and Tais, pitching in at the establishment regularly. His mother, brother, aunt, and nephew are also a part of the team. “We all have restaurant experience,” Morales said. “We felt it was a good fit to work together and give Moulton another good place to eat.”
Morales’ signature dish is Big Willie’s Burger, named after his brother, William Morales. This monster burger consists of two fresh ground meat patties, bacon, grilled onions and mushrooms, all melded together with American cheese. Customers can make it their own by adding any burger fixings they would like. Bryan’s Daily Treat is open Monday through Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Thursday and Sunday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Moulton Independent School District Originally opening as the Sam and Will Moore Institute, a newspaper account of 1901 stated the enrollment in December was 170. The first class to graduate was in 1905. The school became an Independent School District in 1902.
Today, the Moulton Independent School District system stresses a strong academic curriculum with an integrated sports program. This combination gives students the winning edge - in academic competitions, on the basketball court, and in life.
Sam and Will Moore Institute Bell At the institute’s opening in 1901, this bell rang the school-day hours and soon became town’s fire alarm. Its proudest day of civic use was November 11, 1918 when it sounded news of armistice ending World War I. Discarded in 1939, it was restored in 1973.

Although local oral tradition holds that there may be older interments, the earliest documented grave is that of Louisa Lattimer (1842-1857). Those interred here include Lavaca County pioneers, former slaves, a large number of children, victims of 19th century diseases and epidemics, and veterans of the Texas Revolution, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Of the hundreds of graves in the Moulton Cemetery, many remain unmarked.
Notable Gravesite Issaac D. Hamilton
Hamilton came to Texas from Alabama in January 1836 as member of Captain Jack S. Hackelford’s Red Rover Company under Colonel Fannin’s command March 18 -19, 1836. He miraculously escaped from the Goliad Massacre.
St. Paul’s African Methodist Episcopal Church Closed since 2007 Intersection of CR 5321 and FM 532
Following the Civil War and Emancipation, the small but vibrant Black population around Moulton began to be served by Missionaries of a newly formed offshoot of the Methodist Church called the African Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1967, Reverend E. Hammitt became the first Black AME minister in the county, riding a large circuit that included Moulton. St. Paul’s AME Church reluctantly closed it’s doors in 2007. Although the church is no longer in operation, its 120 years of service as a spiritual beacon will remain in the hearts of the community.

red F. Fehrenkamp called to order a meeting of interested citizens for the purpose of organizing a volunteer fire department on April 4, 1932. That evening the Moulton Fire Department came into existence. The Fire Department was organized before the City of Moulton became an incorporated city. The department’s first vehicle purchase was a 1917 Model American La France chain-driven Pumper Type 700. The fire station was built in 1938 which remains in service today. Through the years the department worked with dedication to increase the efficiency of their fire service to the residents and businesses of the City of Moulton as well as surrounding areas. Today, the Moulton Fire Department has eight trucks of which the newest being a Spartan Engine that was purchased in December 2019. The department remains committed to providing the best fire service available with plans to build a new fire station in the near future to accommodate the growth of the department.
