e plan to interview and highlight one central family within each Mommy Savant Guide, under our Meet Your Neighbors column. Meet Michele GargiuloMcCue – one of the owners of Texas Arizona, Cadillac Cantina, Hudson Ultra Bar, Mike’s Wild Moose Saloon and Venti Pizzeria here in Hoboken. Hi Michele! Introduce us to the family… Meet my husband Jimmy, Gigi (13), Siena (11) and Mia (8). Girls are begging for a dog to add to the insanity – but I’m holding off as long as I can! When did you move to Hoboken? Jimmy has been here for 26 years! And me 16 years… the girls were born in Hoboken and we plan to raise them here as well. How have you seen the community/ neighborhood change? Jimmy has seen it change and evolve the most. So much life AND construction these days! There was nothing like Maxwell’s Place or anything on the waterfront. Of course, the obvious answer is all the families that are staying and not fleeing to the burbs like was a given even 10 years ago.

What is your favorite neighborhood walk? I love all of Hoboken. I love walking from uptown to downtown, peeking in the shops and I always encounter a few friends along the way. That’s really my favorite part of Hoboken. Even when you’re alone, you’re really not. Gigi was colicky as a baby, and I used to walk for hours, even at night. I loved seeing people out and about, at any hour of the day – or night! Tell us about your favorite neighborhood activities. I am in the thick of it now with my girls doing so many sports and activities, so I really enjoy seeing all my other mom friends from 3pm on - every day! Walking on the waterfront is always relaxing. What a view, right? I appreciate the routine and running around from Monday thru Friday, and then the crazy stop and go and (sometimes) laziness of the weekends. Favorite local restaurants? If I want Mexican, I’ll go to Cadillac Cantina or for pizza at Venti Pizzeria. If I’m in the mood for something healthy, I go to Pure Pita or Los Olas for sushi, where we just walk right in. If I’m feeling fancy its Dino & Harry’s and girl’s night out is Hudson Ultra Bar! (Recently renovated from the former Teak space downtown.) What do you find most unique about living in this community? The sense of community. Everyone has a strong pride about Hoboken. We all watch out for each other and our kids. I feel like there’s a sense of all being in the same boat here, good or bad. The proximity to the city, of course, and I love our big town feel, small town atmosphere we have going on here. I’m truly happy for my friends here, and I’ve made a bunch of great, long lasting ones. I feel very fortunate to love my children’s school, the friendships we’ve made throughout the years. There is no other place we would rather raise our girls.

Hartshorne family
y name is Jennifer Hartshorn and along with my husband Mac, we own a family photo studio called Hartshorn Portraiture in the Monroe Center. We’ve lived in Hoboken for over 16 years and may actually be the “oldest” photo studio in town! Mac and I moved to Hoboken from Miami just a short while before the birth of our eldest daughter Madeline, who is now 16 years old. Mac was a fashion photographer and traveled a great deal which became hard on the family with the arrival of our second daughter Cameron, just about a year later. To say this was a busy time in our lives is a HUGE understatement. I also represented photographers in New York City but as the portrait studio grew I realized that I could not do it all and closed that business. We did consider moving to the suburbs but after purchasing a brownstone 10 years ago we knew we were here for good! The girls have had a great education in Hoboken starting at the public school then moving to Elysian Charter School and are now enjoying a their high school years at The Hudson School. I am always happy to speak with new parents about school options as it can be a little daunting. Remember - if you move to the burbs be prepared to spend much of your life in a car! I try to achieve a harmony between work and marriage and children. There are definitely challenges when your business partner is also your life partner. Having everyone within a 5 block radius means kids and husband and life are often circling each
other but it’s a luxury as a working mum to be able to run home to be with my girls for a lunch or to oversee their homework and then head back to the studio for evening presentations. Our studio specializes in a very “high touch” type of service so a great deal of my time is spent working directly with the clients to insure a perfect experience before, during and after their shoot. With our client families shooting with us year after year we have the pleasure of watching them grow! I love this close-knit community! You never get more a block down the street without bumping into someone you know. Whenever possible Mac and I like to sneak out for a date night at Anthony David’s or Bin 14 and the girls love Karma Kafe for occasional night we have take out We take advantage of the live music and movies under the stars during the summer months and all the other activities this small city has to offer. As my children are older I am starting to reclaim a little me time and have taken up hot yoga at Surya and also take adult art classes on a Sunday at Urban Art. Both bring me much joy. This town really is very special. As a business we donate our services for as many worthwhile causes as possible which is very rewarding. Being a part of a small town means it takes all of us to keep this place as special as it is.

Rotundo-Segali family
L
isa Segali’s family roots in the Hoboken area started long before she and her husband, Dr. John Rotundo, purchased their first home in the mile square city in 2002. Lisa’s great grandparents emigrated to Hudson county from Italy in 1915 and her father was born and raised here. He then started a tradition of graduating from Steven’s Institute of Technology. Lisa was drawn to the sciences and computer programming, so she eventually joined her older brother at Steven’s and graduated in 1993. Her younger brother continued the tradition and became the fourth Steven’s graduate and lived here for many years. A Hoboken family for sure! Following graduation, Lisa stayed in Hoboken and began her career in NYC. Lisa and John began dating in 1995, married in 2002, and were drawn to settling in an urban setting to begin their lives together and raise their family. In 2000 John started Hudson Family Chiropractic in the downtown historic building at 51 Newark Street. He was drawn to Hoboken by it’s vibrancy and diversity, but also by it’s small town feel. The practice began in a 200 square foot room with one chiropractic table and a computer. It has expanded on a yearly basis and now houses four chiropractic tables, four physical therapy tables, two reformer pilates machines (offering pre\postnatal pilates rehabilitation), and multiple pieces of physical therapy and rehabilitation equipment. The practice is thriving and has plans to continue expansion. John and Lisa have two kids who are thriving in Hoboken. Kate attends middle at Hola and takes advantage of all the city has to offer for kids. Kate is a member of Diamond Gymnastics first competitive team. She is currently obsessed with softball and plays on Big Banner Hoboken Recreation team. Michael is a Kindergartner at Hola, and participates in Hoboken Recreational T-ball and soccer. He can often be found swinging and climbing from any apparatus he can find in all of Hoboken’s parks and playgrounds. The Rotundos feel like the changes that they and Hoboken have gone through since moving here run parallel. The city started to become more family oriented and child friendly at the same time their daughter was born in 2005. “Like most young families in town, we went back and forth many times regarding staying here or moving to the suburbs. Hoboken won every time. This is where we belong”!

Fleming family O
ur family moved to Hoboken 5 years ago following the birth of our first daughter. We moved here looking for more space in our apartment, and boy were we surprised with all of the other wonderful things that go along with Hoboken living! I couldn’t believe how friendly everyone was and how Hoboken truly felt like a city, but with a quaint / small-town feel. My husband, Jeff, and I have two little girls now (Dylan-5 and Reagan-3), who attend local schools in town and we are co-owners of Prime Cycle (Uptown-1025 Maxwell Lane and Downtown-70 Hudson St), which are Indoor Cycling Studios in Hoboken. We opened the first Prime Cycle in order to bring a family feel and unique fitness experience to the community. Some of our favorite places to go near our apartment in Hoboken are Fiore’s (because you aren’t living unless you eat their mutz), Church Square Park, O’Neill’s, and my all-time favorite restaurant in life Cucharamama (the white sangria a must!). Hoboken is so unique for young families - you can literally bring your kids EVERYWHERE with you for kid and adult fun alike. Our weekends consist of taking the kids to the studio for our work out while they play in the babysitting room, then stop by a park or Shnackenberg’s for a quick bite and if the weather is warm maybe Pier 13 to meet some friends. I think back to my first week in Hoboken wandering the streets of my new neighborhood and I met so many business owners who actually wanted to make a connection (NYC definitely didn’t have the same feel). Now, that is what I cherish the most and strive to continue to pursue at Prime Cycle. I currently part-time manage the studios while juggling work with my mom job. I truly love making relationships with the clients who are now my neighborhood friends. My daughters always tease me that I know “everyone” in town when we are walking the streets and I stop to chit-chat with all of my new friends (of course they try move me along the same way I used to do to my mom as a child “COME ON, LET’S GO MAAAAAA”). ’ve been working in Hoboken as a Group Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer for the past 20 years; some may remember me from years ago from
Strollercize. My husband Peter was born and raised in this community; our 25th Wedding Anniversary is coming up in October of this year. Both of our children attended lower and middle school at Hoboken Charter; my daughter Alexa in now a 19 year old sophomore at Montclair State University; my son Kris is 16 years old, and is a sophomore at Hudson Catholic HS in Jersey City ( where my husband is a class of ‘85 alumni). My son loves to take advantage of the basketball courts at Church Square Park and the batting cages at the Hoboken Little League Field when the weather is nice; some of our favorite restaurants here in town are Trattoria Sapporito, Napoli’s, and of course, Benny Tudino’s!

ust steps from the 9th Street Elevator lives The Cliff, a neighborhood cafe serving killer coffee alongside wholesome and delicious foods. A secluded backyard and sidewalk tables offer the best outdoor seating in the Heights. Noted as one of our favorite private party spaces in town! At The Cliff the focus is organic and unprocessed foods. They prepare foods that promote healthy living, with respect for others and the environment as well as support local businesses. The menu is designed to accommodate both those who want to grab healthy options on the go as well as those looking for a comfortable place to gather and enjoy.
They source organic and local products whenever possible and work with vendors who share their beliefs. The cuisine is eclectic American with Icelandic and European influences. The cafe is predominantly vegetarian and vegan but they do also offer the freshest, most Eco sustainable fish in the world, sourced from The Fish Dock - an Icelandic seafood market in Closter, New Jersey. Their coffee is superior in taste. Working with a local master roaster they have perfected well-balanced yet robust blends for both their house coffee as well as their silky cold brew. Their coffee program will also be offering single origin beans on a weekly basis as pour overs on a flavor tour of coffee producing countries around the world. Their teas are international in origin, purchased from an all female owned and operated company. They also offer boxed water to reduce their carbon footprint. The Cliff is all about community. They live in, work and raise their children in this neighborhood, supporting local artists and organizations that share their values by getting involved.
