How today’s technology has affected the way we use our eyes. Whether from persistent strain at the computer, or exposure to harmful rays, we are stressing ours eyes in unique ways these days. Fortunately, designers and manufacturers of eyeglass lenses are advancing lens technology to battle those stresses. Two of the biggest areas of advancement are in preventing eye damage from harmful radiation, and in reducing eye strain. In generations past, we need only be concerned with UV (ultraviolet) wavelengths from the sun. Now that we are moving indoors, spending much more time on computers and other electronic devices, we are exposing our eyes to a different wavelength that has a damaging effect similar to UV. Popping sugar pills helps prevent kids’ migraines BY LINDSEY TANNER AP Medical Writer
CHICAGO — Sugar pills worked as well at preventing kids’ migraines as two commonly used headache medicines, but had fewer side effects, in a study that may lead doctors to rethink how they treat a common ailment in children and teens. It’s the first rigorous headto-head test in kids of two generic prescription drugs also used for adults’ migraines: topiramate, an anti-seizure medicine, and amitriptyline, an anti-depressant. The idea was to see if either drug could reduce by half the number of days kids had migraines over a month’s time. Both drugs worked that well — but so did placebo sugar pills. The results “really challenge what is typical practice today by headache specialists,” said study author Scott Powers, a psychologist at Cincinnati

Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Epstein said it should lead neurologists to rely on other prevention strategies; he advises lifestyle changes including getting more sleep and reducing stress, which he said can help prevent migraines in teen patients. Continued from 5 school-aged kids have migraines; the debilitating headaches tend to persist into the teen years and adulthood. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicines including ibuprofen and acetaminophen can help reduce symptoms. The only government-approved migraine medication for kids is topiramate, which is known by the brand names Topamax and Qudexy, but it is only approved for those 12 and up. The two study drugs are inexpensive and used in children and teens in part because of benefits seen with adults, but there’s no strong research showing they are effective in kids, Powers said. The study included about 300 kids aged 8 to 17, enrolled at 31 centers. They had 11 migraines on average in the month before the study began and were randomly assigned to take either of the drugs or placebo pills daily for six months. Migraine frequency in the study’s last month was compared with what kids experienced before the study. At least half of kids in each group achieved the study goal, reducing migraine frequency by half. Side effects from the drugs were common, including fatigue, dry mouth and forgetfulness. Almost one-third of kids on topiramate also had tingling sensations in their hands, arms, legs or feet. There was one suicide attempt in the topiramate group, another known side-effect of that drug. The side effects were not unexpected, but given the risks, the results suggest the drugs shouldn’t be “fi rstline prevention treatments” for kids’ migraines, Powers said.

Eyes Continued from 3 visible spectrum. You may also hear it referred to as blue light. We are exposed to blue light both outdoors from the sun and indoors from electronic devices. The most common effects are earlier onset of cataracts, and macular damage that leads to macular degeneration. These effects are a result of an accumulation of damage over the course of years of exposure. Just as we came to understand how to protect our eyes from UV, we are coming to understand how to protect our eyes from blue light. Some lens styles include protection, to varying degrees, within the lens. Almost every lens can have a protective coating added. The amount of blue light protection is increased when adding the protective properties of a lens coating to the protective properties of the lens itself. Office workers in particular often feel less eye fatigue at the end of the day when utilizing such lens coatings. Another way to reduce eye fatigue is by utilizing lenses that are designed for those spending much time per day performing near visual activities. Activities that include computer, tablet, smart phone, and even paperwork to some degree. Our eyes are designed to focus on distance objects
in a relaxed state. They must exert effort to focus on near objects. As we are spending more time these days on near objects, lenses have been designed to relieve that effort. For those that don’t yet require bifocals or progressive lenses (aka no-line bifocals), anti-fatigue lenses are basically traditional single vision lenses with a little power boost in the bottom to allow the lens to do some of the work the eyes are otherwise required to do. The boost comes in a smooth transition with no visible lines. Over the course of a day spent looking at near objects, these lenses make quite a difference in eye strain for many people. For those that require bifocals or progressive lenses, the position of the near help in those lenses is below center. Below center is perfect when we are in a natural reading position looking downward at the reading material. When looking at a computer screen, which is at eye level though, we may be forced into an awkward neck posture. The head may be tilted back to position the bifocal or progressive power for viewing the computer screen. Computer lenses, aka near variable lenses, are
designed to position the computer power at the center of the lens when in a normal posture looking straight ahead. The computer viewing area is also wider than in progressive (no-line) lenses, meaning a larger clear area and less head movement. The area of the lens for long-distance viewing is pushed up higher in the lens to allow the center of the lens to focus on the computer screen. Still, the bottom of the computer lens includes additional help to read paper or small devices at a closer viewing distance. Computer lenses may also benefit those that have only needed reading glasses, but find it inconvenient to be continually removing and replacing them when changing viewing distance. Be sure to discuss any specific visual tasks with your eye doctor or optical staff. When considering lenses specific for near tasks, it is important to know the distance from your eyes to the object. The power needed to focus on a computer screen twenty inches away is different that the power needed to focus on sheet music thirty inches away. Knowing the distance, your doctor can calculate the lens power you need and write a specific prescription for it if needed.
