Seniors, Remember To Start Getting Your Information Together To Get Your Real NM Drivers License Or ID.

As of November 14, 2016, New Mexico started issuing driver’s licenses and identification cards that comply with the federal Real ID Act of 2005 as well as non-compliant driving authorization cards.

On October 1, 2020, the federal government will require your driver’s license or ID card to be Real ID compliant if you wish to use it as identification to board an aircraft or enter federal facilities where ID is required.

Existing New Mexico driver’s licenses (issued before REAL ID) and ID cards will continue to be accepted until expiration or October 1, 2020, whichever is sooner.

When you renew your current New Mexico license, you will need to choose which credential you will be applying for and bring the required documents.

To obtain a Real ID license or ID card, you must present proof of identity, proof of identity number and two proofs of address in person at the MVD one time, even if you did so prior to Real ID implementation.

There is no rush. You can wait until your next renewal or until you need to make a change to your name or address.

In a case of multiple name changes, you may be asked for marriage certificates or other proof of each change.

Divorce decrees must reference the maiden name or former name before marriage.

If you lack any of these documents, contact your state or county Vital Statistics Office. The birth certificate must be an original or a certified copy. A list is available from the National Center for Health Statistics. You may also use www.vitalchek.com or a similar commercial service.

Documents that you provide must be originals or certified copies.

Photocopies, notarized photocopies and non-certified copies are not acceptable.

Name Changes The name on the MVD issued credential must be your legal name. If your birth certificate or identity document contains your current legal name, you do not need to provide proof of a name change.

The names on any submitted documents must match your legal name. The name on your birth certificate is considered your legal name if the birth certificate is provided. For example, if you are providing an SSN for proof of identity

Residency Documents must show your name and New Mexico residential address.

EDITORIAL Many Residents Concerned About Smell Of Urine In Some Area Nursing Facilities __________________________

RED FLAG: If you walk into a nursing home and

your first impression is being hit in the face with the smell of urine. Can you imagine having to live with the smell of this neglect 24-7 in the small room you rent for thousands of dollars a month?

Not all nursing homes smell that way, but based on comments and complaints from residents familiar with the various facilities, there is one. Nursing home neglect is the most common type of elder abuse in nursing facilities. While nursing home neglect is similar to abuse in the nursing home, there are key differences among the two. Nursing home abuse implies that the caregiver intends to harm the elderly person, while nursing home neglect is a form of substandard care, or a breach of duty, that causes harm to the patient.

Types of Nursing Facility Neglect

Nursing home neglect can vary according to each individual case. There are considered to be four different types of nursing home neglect, including the following:

Senior Citizens Can Help Police

COMMENT Medical neglect. The nursing facility fails to attend adequately or prevent medical concerns of the resident, including provisional care for diabetes, bedsores, infections, cognitive disorders, mobility issues and lacerations.

Neglect of Basic Needs. The nursing facility fails to provide the resident with a reasonable amount of water or food, or fails to provide a clean and safe environment.

Neglect of Personal Hygiene. This is where nursing home residents do not have adequate assistance with cleaning, brushing their teeth, laundry, bathing or other types of hygiene practices.

Social or Emotional Neglect. This is where staff members repeatedly ignore the nursing home resident, leaving them alone, or are yelled at by an overstressed staff member.

Neglect can be identified by observing the following changes in the nursing facility resident; :Malnutrition as evidenced by bedsores and frequent infections; Sudden weight loss, particularly if the resident needs help feeding themselves; Bedsores or pressure ulcers from failing to adequately turn the resident; Falls resulting in various types of injuries; Dehydration from failing to keep the resident stocked with adequate amounts of water; Withdrawn behavior in the resident or abnormal changes in their behavior; Failing to sustain friendly interaction with their fellow nursing facility residents; Alterations in appearance or personal hygiene; The presence of environmental hazards, such as slippery floors, bad lighting, unsafe wheelchairs and walkers and unsafe furniture in the nursing facility resident’s room.

Scams There have been concerns about seniors in Hobbs receiving phone calls (scam calls) or emails telling them their utilities will be cut off if they don’t send payment with a store gift card to a specified address they provide. It is a scam. No legitimate company offering services to you will as you to go purchase a gift card for payment.

Tax Preparation Remember to check with your Senior Centers in Lea County to see when volunteers will be there to help you prepare your taxes.

LEGAL RESOURCES FOR SENIORS The Legal Resources for the Elderly Program (LREP) is a free, statewide helpline for New Mexico residents age 55 and older.

The Program does not have any income restrictions. LREP is a joint project of the New Mexico State Bar Foundation and the New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department. LREP has been in existence for nearly 30 years.

Through its helpline, LREP provides legal advice and brief services to more than 4000 New Mexico seniors annually. Each caller speaks with a trained intake staff member, who collects the necessary contact and demographic information. After completing an intake, each caller who is eligible for the Program speaks to one of LREP’s five staff attorneys, each of whom is a highly qualified professional specializing in the legal issues that most affect New Mexico seniors. LREP staff attorneys provide legal advice and brief services in most areas of civil law. LREP provides legal advice in both English and Spanish.

Senior Sightings Around Town Kenny Schmitt was sighted at Hobbs Police Department recently. Do you think he might be telling Chief McCall (who just retired) a joke, or is he talking his way out of a sticky situation?

Actually, Kenny was spotted at a retirement reception at HPD. Schmitt, himself is a retired firefighter from HFD with a sense of humor. If you happen to be around Casey’s in the Mini Mall on Broadway, chances are pretty good that you will run into Kenny there. He has quite a reputation for having a new joke or two everyday to share with anyone in his path. One thing is for sure, Kenny keeps everyone laughing and smiling.

When You Ask A Senior, “How Are You?” Most Will Say, “I’m Fine.”

But beneath the smile, the sadness in the eyes often unmask the loneliness and depression Area senior citizens often share their innermost thoughts with Senior Confidential, and two of those comments that seem to weigh heavily on seniors is that feeling of lonliness and depression. They do work to analyze the why to those questions, and the answers are typically linked to the loss of a spouse, child, or family member leaving them alone and struggling to pick up the pieces and live life. Many of their adult children, they say, are too busy, live too far away, or simply engulfed in their own lives to spend much quality time with aging family members. The loneliness can be crushing and depression interferes with quality of life. In plenty of cases, those receiving Meals on Wheels admit that sometimes for weeks on end, the only person who comes to their door besides the postman is the Meals on Wheels delivery person, and they say, that’s a welcome visit even if it is short.

Common Symptoms of Depression According to National Institutes of Health, there are many symptoms associated with depression, and some will vary depending on the individual.

However, some of the most common symptoms are listed below. If you have several of these symptoms for more than 2 weeks, you may have depression.

Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood Feelings of hopelessness, guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness Irritability, restlessness, or having trouble sitting still Loss of interest in once pleasurable activities, including sex Decreased energy or fatigue

Cover Story Bill & Eileen Waldrop

“Bill and Eileen Waldrop have always been involved in community, between church, community service, work and family.

Bill Waldrop served as a City Commissioner and Mayor of Hobbs.”

In order to share Bill & Eileen Waldrop’s story, we must first take you back to the dream of Bill’s parents. Barney and Catherine Waldrop were married on July 6, 1934. They lived in Oklahoma until World War II, when Barney was called to active duty. After the war, Barney and Catherine moved to Roswell, New Mexico and began to work and save to start their own furniture business. Their dreams were realized in 1952 when they opened the first Miller Waldrop furniture store in Lovington, NM. Their business grew and expanded to other cities, most notably, Hobbs and Roswell.

Miller Waldrop Furniture and Decor was established in 1952 by its founders Barney Waldrop and Alex Miller. Barney, who worked at the Sears Furniture department, had a dream of owning his own business and bringing top quality home furnishings to a small town in southeastern New Mexico. He convinced his friend Alex to join him and the dream was born.

Bill and Eileen moved to Hobbs 61 years ago in 1958. Bill worked for his Dad at the Miller-Waldrop store in Lovington before finding a location in Hobbs.With the help of his Dad, Bill opened the Hobbs MillerWaldrop Furniture store at 401 North Turner St. Eileen and Bill were married in 1955, 63 years ago, in Brownwood, Texas.

Bill was elected to the Hobbs City Commission in 1976 and again in 1980 serving a total of 8 years. He was elected as mayor for a one year term in 1978 and 1982.

One of Eileen’s hobbies was golf. She was a member of the Ladies Golf Association at what was then the Ocotillo Golf Course, and served as president. She was also a member of the Hobbs Country Club Ladies Golf Association. Other hobbies of hers were dancing and decorating.

Eileen enjoyed most raising their wonderful children, Tammy and Kent. She was also active in our church choir and Sunday School.

When the kids were in high school and college she opened her shop, Eileen’s Bed Bath and Kitchen, in the Norte Vista Plaza, which became a very popular shop.

Bill’s favorite hobbies were golf and retailing, Bill joined the Hobbs Kiwanis Club in !958 and served in various positions including president. He served on several boards including Hobbs Country Club, Hobbs Chamber of Commerce, College of the Southwest, First Interstate Bank, and the New Mexico Amigos.

Both have been involved in their churches. Bill served as Music Director at Northside Baptist for 10 years and Eileen was a member of the choir and taught Sunday School. Then, Bill was called to Taylor Memorial Baptist where he served as Music Director for 10 years and Eileen also taught Sunday School and was a member of the choir.

They continue to worship there.

Eileen said, “Since we

retired about 20 years ago we decided to travel and are only in Hobbs about two or three months a year. We continue to be amazed at the new businesses, hotels, apartments, and developments that have taken place in Hobbs. a community that has been very good to our family and ...we will always love and feel a part of it. “ Bill has received some very nice honors as a result of his time in business. Some of these are the Paul Harris Award from the Hobbs Rotary Club, and Business Man of the year, which he very much appreciated.

During Bill’s years in the retail business he had furniture stores in Hobbs, Lovington, Roswell, Seminole, and Odessa.

He was a partner in music Stores in Hobbs, Roswell, Odessa, and Albuquerque. After developing the Norte Vista Plaza in 1976, he was involved as a partner in Eileen’s Bed Bath and Kitchen, Premier Jewelers, and Bikes Etc.Today the furniture stores are in Hobbs and Ruidoso Downs, and the music stores are in Hobbs and Odessa.

Fast forward 60 years to Third Generation Owners and Operators Kent & Beckey Waldrop. The Waldrops have been working in the business for the last 30 years, and the passion hasn’t changed.

Experiencing something unique, unusual and most of all exceptional is what Miller Waldrop Furniture and Decor is all about.

The Miller Waldrop opened its second location in Ruidoso Downs, NM in 2012.

Kent & Beckey Waldrop continue to carry on the family tradition.

Granny’s Old Fashioned Remedies OLIVE OIL: Granny used to say that olive oil works well on eczema to lessen the irritating symptoms.

OLIVES: There have been those who eat two or three olives a day, and cook with olive oil who had proof that they had gall stones that disappeared after four or five weeks of eating olives and cooking with olive oil.

LEMONS: Drinking warm water and lemon in the morning, she said, helps the immune system and the pH balance of the body, fights infections and detoxifies the body. Some, she said swear that lemons keep kidney stones away and protect against anemia.

WATER: She once said, always drink a glass of water when you

wake up, it gets your body going, and always drink a glass of water before bedtime to keep your blood flowing to your organs throughout the night. But more importantly, drink water all day.

CUCUMBERS: Her love of cucumbers, she said was because they are a natural antioxidant good for bone health, skin, heart health and digestion. She would place cucumbers and lemons in water and said it cleaned out all of the unhealthy buildup of toxins in her system.

We say, we don’t know if any of these things do what Granny said they could do, but have tried a few of her old fashioned remedies and have had good results.

FDA warns about increased risk of ruptures or tears in the aorta blood vessel with fluoroquinolone antibiotics in certain patients

[12-20-2018] A U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) review found that fluoroquinolone antibiotics can increase the occurrence of rare but serious events of ruptures or tears in the main artery of the body, called the aorta. These tears, called aortic dissections, or ruptures of an aortic aneurysm can lead to dangerous bleeding or even death. They can occur with fluoroquinolones for systemic use given by mouth or through an injection.

Fluoroquinolones should not be used in patients at increased risk unless there are no other treatment options available.

People at increased risk include those with a history of blockages or aneurysms (abnormal bulges) of the aorta or other blood vessels, high blood pressure, certain genetic disorders that involve blood vessel changes, and the elderly.

We are requiring that a new warning about this risk be added to the prescribing information and patient Medication Guide for all fluoroquinolones.

Fluoroquinolone antibiotics are approved to treat certain bacterial infections and have been used for more than 30

FDA WARNING ALERT Health care professionals should avoid prescribing fluoroquinolone antibiotics to patients who have an aortic aneurysm or are at risk for an aortic aneurysm, such as patients with peripheral atherosclerotic vascular diseases, hypertension, certain genetic conditions such as Marfan syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and elderly patients.

Prescribe fluoroquinolones to these patients only when no other treatment options are available. Advise all patients to seek immediate medical treatment for any symptoms associated with aortic aneurysm. Stop fluoroquinolone treatment immediately if a patient reports side effects suggestive of aortic aneurysm or dissection.

Patients should seek medical attention immediately by going to an emergency room or calling 911 if you experience sudden, severe, and constant pain in the stomach, chest or back. Be aware that symptoms of an aortic aneurysm often do not show up until the aneurysm becomes large or bursts, so report any unusual side effects from taking fluoroquinolones to your health care professional immediately. Before starting an antibiotic prescription, inform your health care professional if you have a history of aneurysms, blockages or hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure, or genetic conditions such as Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. If you have been prescribed a fluoroquinolone to treat an infection, do not stop the antibiotic without first talking to your health care professional.

Former Lea County Probate Judge Honored On Her 91st Birthday

Bobbye Allen is a former Probate Judge in Lea County. Back in the late 1990’s, a familiar face to all around the courthouse, Bobbye provided guidance, assistance and rulings to hundreds of residents over the years in the area of probate matters. She was notably acknowledged for her assistance, review and input into the 2011 revised New Mexico Probate Judges Manual, and framers of the manual wrote: “The following people provided invaluable review and assistance in creating and updating this Manual:” Listed first is Honorable Bobbye Allen, former Lea County Probate Judge.

USDA EATING TIPS TO LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE Blood pressure can be unhealthy even if it stays only slightly above the normal level of less than 120/80 mmHg. The more your blood pressure rises above normal, the greater the health risk.

Scientists supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) conducted two key studies. Their findings showed that blood pressures were reduced with an eating plan that is low in saturated fat, cholesterol, and total fat and that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products. This eating plan—known as the DASH eating plan—also includes whole grain products, fish, poultry, and nuts. It is reduced in lean red meat, sweets, added sugars, and sugar-containing beverages compared to the typical American diet. It is rich in potassium, magnesium, and calcium, as well as protein and fiber. The DASH eating plan used along with other lifestyle changes can help you prevent and control blood pressure. If your blood pressure is not too high, you may be able to control it entirely by changing your eating habits, losing weight if you are overweight, getting regular physical activity, and cutting down on alcohol. The DASH eating plan also has other benefits, such as lowering LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, which, along with lowering blood pressure, can reduce your risk for getting heart disease.

Lovington Billy McKibben Senior Center Is A Senior Citizen’s Happy Place

illy McKibben Senior Center in Lovington focuses on social activity, health, and well-being.

Every month the center offers the following classes and activities; Monday, Wednesday and Friday the senior center serves healthy lunches. Everyday, is exercise day in morning exercise classes. There are coffee club game nights, pot luck evening meals on designated nights, regular blood pressure checks, and of course pool and dominoes for some friendly competition. At designated times, seniors can have their hearing checked at the center.

The Lovington Senior Citizen Center is a municipal facility located at 18 West Avenue F, Lovington, NM, that provides service to patrons of age 60 and over. A variety of programs and activities in a social environment are aimed for you. In New Mexico It Is Legal To Install A Camera And Watch Over Your Loved One In A Long-Term Facility New Mexico is one of five states in the U.S. that allows residents of longterm care facilities and/or their designated individual to install a camera in their room which can be monitored 24 hours a day by the family member or designated surrogate of the resident. There are several rules under N.M. Law under [24-26-1 through 24-26-12 NMSA 1978] The “Patient Care Monitoring Act”. No other person has access to your video as only you monitor through your phone or computer 24-7. You are required to pay for any system you choose to install, and are responsible for installing the camera.

Some of the requirements to install a monitoring camera in a local facility include: • • • • • •

You are required to notify the facility that you plan to place a camera in resident room The facility can not refuse to allow installation Agreement of any roommate in the room must be obtained prior to installation It is a felony for any person to tamper with or disable any recording device installed The facility may not retaliate against any resident or family placing a camera The facility shall post a notice in a conspicuous place at the entrance to a room with a monitoring device stating that a monitoring device is in use in that room of the facility.

The Patient Care Monitoring Act clarifies where you may place a camera. “Facility” means a licensed long-term care facility licensed pursuant to the provisions of the law including: • • • • • • • • •

A skilled nursing facility; An intermediate care nursing facility; A nursing facility; An adult residential shelter care home; A boarding home; Any adult care home or adult residential facility; and Any swing bed in an acute care facility or extended care facility; “monitoring device” means a surveillance instrument that broadcasts or records activity, but does not include a still camera; “Patient” means a person who is a resident of a facility.

Ready For Spring Planting At Your Place? Here Are Some Tips Now is the time to think about cool-weather vegetables if you have not done so already. Leaf lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage should go into the garden by early April at the latest.

We are told that these do well in the cool weeks of spring. While you are setting out these plants, cross your fingers that it doesn’t get boiling hot in May, which isn’t good for them.

After you’ve given attention to these food crops, snip off spent blooms of

daffodils but let the foliage and stems mature naturally to help build flower buds for next year. You can remove them when they turn yellow.

About mid-April, you can start planting seeds for summer crops such as green beans, melons, corn, cucumbers, pumpkins and squashes. Things really get going then because the air and soil are typically warmer by the day. But the

soil and air are probably still too cool for tomatoes and pepper plants. Save them for about late April or even early May if April remains chilly.

Most herbs are hardy and can be planted in April with little worry, but basil is a tropical that should wait for warm soil in late April or early May.

Honoring Dr. John Kernan and Senator Gay Kernan The Kernan family has always had a reputation for helping everyone in their path for decades in Lea County. Dr. John has practiced for more than 4 decades helping keep the masses well, praying for them, praying with them, and providing great depth of expertise to his practice. Dr. John B Kernan is retiring, and is an Internal Medicine Specialist who graduated with honors from University Of Texas Medical Branch At Galveston in 1975.

His dad, Jack Kernan passed away at the age of 81 in 2007 after practicing medicine for 52 years provided the same caring medical treatment and thoughtfulness to the people of Lea County.

Gay Kernan has been serving the State of New Mexico and Lea County since 2003 as a NM State Senator.

Kernan earned her B.A. from the University of Mississippi. She has served on numerous senate committees over the years putting her heart and soul into each of them in areas of education, finance, health and human services, public affairs, or rules, She has had the honor in the past as the ranking member of the Senate Education Committee .

Gay Kernan is a 1965 graduate of Hobbs High School, a 1969 graduate of the University of Mississippi and a retired educator. As a beloved teacher for Hobbs Schools, she worked as an elementary school teacher from 1993 to 2003 and as an assistant coordinator in the Early Reading First Program. Ask anyone, and they will tell you that Gay Kernan is a kind, caring, thoughtful person who changed the lives of hundreds of children in Lea County and that her dedication will always be a bright spot for those who were blessed to have her as a teacher.

As a legislator, Gay carries that same focused dedication to New Mexico, her constituents. Friends and family.

Former Hobbs Beautician Turns 90 And Still Looks Like A Beauty Queen Back in the late 1940’s in Hobbs, Chris Cutright began her beauty career within other local shops, cutting hair, styling, and creating some beautiful hairdos, and then, decades ago she opened her own shop called Chris’s Beauty Shop at 703. South Turner.

Over the years, Chris had hundreds of clients who still remember the magic

she worked on their hair for every imaginable event.

SENIORS STANDING STRONG NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION IN LEA COUNTY HELPING HUNDREDS OF SENIOR CITIZENS Seniors Standing Strong has provided the following help to our seniors in Lea County.

Numerous seniors have been helped through the nonprofit paying for airconditioning repairs to their evaporative units, limbs and tree trimming removal was done, a new starter for a senior’s car was provided and installed, bathroom grab bars were purchased and installed, a concrete ramp was poured, wiring, electricity was restored, two flooded senior homes from leaks and rain were repaired, and professionally vacuumed and dried out, a serious leaking gas situation was repaired, new water heaters were purchased and installed at two addresses with water heater problems, seniors who needed eye exams and glasses were helped, an 80 year old senior sleeping on the floor who lost her home and belongings due to back taxes, now has a new bed.

Other seniors received denture replacement due to lost or broken dentures, a tree interfering with plumbing was removed, faucets were repaired, new potty risers, a transport wheel chair, oxygen monitors, a lift chair, and assistive devices were provided, sheets for hospital beds in homes, adult diapers, and other needs were fulfilled. Window air-conditioning units were funded, Countless families also have been helped with answers to questions.

The organization networked with other non profit organizations such as Cissy Food ministry, Faith In Action, United Way 211, and Isaiah’s Kitchen, and Nor-Lea for partnered assistance. Together, a huge difference is made for Lea County Seniors who otherwise would go without help in these areas of need.
