Of course we know that those tracks helped us get to where we are now and they feel nostalgic, but technically things have improved so much over the years that it’s hard to listen to them and not get annoyed by the relatively bad sounds from back then. illem and Ward, better known as W&W, have been taking the rise of EDM by storm. Reigning from The Netherlands, this Dutch EDM duo has had a killer year with festival stops and various collabs. Rounding out their year, they will be completing their fall tour with a special stop in Houston for Something Wicked. 14 November 2015 NightCulture
W&W: We love working with samples no matter what genre. In our single “The One” we sampled Whitney Houston which was quite a mission to get cleared but in the end it worked out very well! We’ve got two more tracks coming up where we sampled older tracks but unfortunately we can’t announce those yet.

NightCulture: How do you prepare for live shows and festivals? Are there any pre-show rituals that you must do? W&W: When we get to a show we like listening to what the DJ before us is playing so we know the mood the crowd is in and we know what tracks he played so we won’t play the same songs. We don’t really have a ritual to be honest, we just like to hang with our colleagues and friends before and after! NightCulture: What’s the craziest thing a fan has ever done to show their love to you? W&W: Wow that’s a tough question. People do really amazing stuff, wait for us at the airport to take pictures, bake pies for us and give them to us at our shows, make paintings of us and the list goes on and on. www.NightCulture.com
W&W: In the U.S. people really dress up for festivals and when they go out, and in Europe that is a bit different, people just wear everyday clothing. Also we notice that in the U.S. people sing along to lyrics and in Europe people sing along with melodies. It’s not a secret that we love the Houston crowd and the Texas crowd in general, so we really can’t wait to be back! NightCulture: What is in store for W&W as the year closes out and moves into 2016? W&W: There’s so much going on right now! We have too much new music coming up, it’s hard to make a release schedule! There are new collaborations with Hardwell, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Armin van Buuren, Steve Aoki and more. We have about 10 new solo singles and we’re still making music every day. | Interview by Brittany Slipko

alifornia-native Jeff Montvalo, better known as Seven Lions, has been dominating WKH PDUNHW ZLWK KLV GLYHUVLĘˆHG FROOHFWLRQ of EDM tunes for quite a while. Entering a DJ competition in his early twenties quickly turned into a whirlwind career as a prominent DJ and producer. At the beginning of his career, Montvalo jumped on an opportunity to remix Above and Beyond’s “You Got To Goâ€? and with no surprise, he was chosen as the top producer. His career immediately launched him into the fast-paced world of EDM with festival stops at EDC, SXSW, and UMF. Fast-forward a couple of years and Seven Lions is now known as one of EDM’s most buzzed about artists. With the release of his latest LP, “The Throes of Winterâ€? and a fall tour, Seven Lions is taking 2015 by storm.
NightCulture: ZDV GHĘˆQLWHO\ WKH \HDU of the Lion. As festival season closed out not too long ago and your new EP has made waves all summer, looking back, what was your most memorable experience on the road this summer? Seven Lions: All the drinking with strangers at the meet and greets have been pretty memorable. We’ve met some awesome people this year and had beers in pretty cool places. Aside from that the show at Webster Hall in New York where the vocalists came out to perform was next level. NightCulture: 'R \RX ĘˆQG LW PRUH RU OHVV GLIĘˆFXOW ZULWLQJ DQG SURGXFLQJ ZKLOH RQ WRXU" What inspires you to write while you’re on tour? Seven Lions: It’s pretty much impossible to work on the road so I just wait until I get home. Honestly, it’s quite a struggle for me. It seems like once I became a professional musician my time to sit at home and get in the zone has gone down quite a bit. Whenever I have 3-4 days at home it’s full on studio time. NightCulture: You’ve mentioned before that EDM is going down a path of monotony and becoming more basic and less special. As an artist, what do you do to make sure that your music doesn’t become like that? Do you believe that writing from the heart eliminates that a little?
www.NightCulture.com
Seven Lions: Well... What I’ve learned so far LV WKDW PDNLQJ PXVLF IRU D GDQFH ʉRRU LV YHU\ limiting. Growing up, were you a trained musician? How did you learn to compose? Was it mostly self-taught? My dad is actually an amazing musician. +H SOD\V JXLWDU GUXPV EDVV ʉXWH VD[ harmonica and he sings so we always had instruments around the house to play with. NightCulture: In your opinion, how is EDM/ dance culture changing? Do you think it’s for the good or the bad? Do you feel the same way about festival culture? Seven Lions: I started going to raves in 0607 and I really loved it. 09 me and my wife went to Burning Man and that really blew my mind and we kinda faded from the rave scene after that. Now in 2015 Emma and I will sneak back out into the crowd every now and then (esp at EDC) and party. To be honest, nothing has changed. The only thing that has changed is the production value is higher. Promoters like Insomniac have really gone nuts with building something epic and worth exploring. Music wise, the only thing I can say that seems different is that everyone is riding the wave of what the new cool sub genre is. Flavor of the month. NightCulture: Do you prefer playing during a festival or a more intimate show? Seven Lions: They both have their strong points. Festivals are just nerve wracking crazy exciting where club shows are really cool because you get to be right there with everyone. Also at club shows I am much more likely to drop something brand new or XQĘˆQLVKHG ZKLFK LV DOZD\V IXQ
