DOG PARKS WHERE FIDO CAN FROLIC Dog parks’ popularity has boomed in Houston over the past decade or so, since the first one— the Millie Bush Dog Park at 16756 Westheimer Parkway — opened in 2002. There are now well over 30 in Houston, such as the new The Johnny Steele Dog Park, named after the well-known landscape architect, off Allen Parkway and Montrose. One of the largest dog parks around, it boasts two large ponds, shade structures, parking spaces and lighted areas. But all of these public spaces welcome your pooch to run off leash, play in the water and make new friends. Houston Park & Recreation Department, which maintains seven dog parks, including Johnny Steele, offers a full overview of its dog facilities at http://www.houstontx.gov/parks/dog-parks. For instance, Maxey Park at 601 Maxey Road offers 12 to 13 acres of space with off-leash opportunities, a doggie shower and drinking fountains. Tiffany Cady, past president of the Houston Dog Park Association, said owners can gauge if their dog would like a dog park or not, based on their personality. “Dogs’ reactions on entering a dog park for the first time can vary from ‘this is awesome … hi friend …’ to 5

I ENJOYHOUSTON

‘this is scary, all these dogs sniffing me at once,’” she said. Cady — who owns Angel Pets, a mobile grooming and pet-sitting service — said owners who aren’t sure about their pet’s reaction should try a park when it’s off-peak time and a bit calmer and quieter. The off-leash aspect of dog parks is especially enticing for canine companions. Off leash, a dog is “in his element among the trees and grass, as nature intended him,” Cady said. “Many dogs who seem unfriendly while leashed are happier off leash”, she points out, “And dog fights at dog parks aren’t a concern, as they are neutral territory.” Parks do have rules and regulations; for example the Houston Park & Rec dog parks don’t allow more than two dogs per human, dogs that are in heat, or puppies under four months old. Dogs have to be wearing registration and vaccination tags. Owners must display a visible leash at all times. After brushing up on the complete rules and packing some doggie clean-up bags just in case (some parks don’t offer them), Houston’s dog parks await your visit. Both of you. HOUSTON|CULTURAL SNAPSHOT

DON’T LIKE TO COOK? EAT RAW! C Cooking intimidates so many people aand is often seen as a dreaded chore iinstead of an opportunity to connect with others and nourish our bodies. w Non-stop schedules add to the stress N of planning and preparing meals and o many turn to fast food or restaum rrants. Preparing your food at home aallows you to control the ingredients and how it’s prepared. Raw Food is quick, easy and perfect for our hot and humid Houston weather! The Eat it Raw class hosted by Kristina Carrillo-Bucaram has been on my to-do list for a while now. I joined her Rawfully Organic co-op two years ago shortly after I began my journey to a healthier life and discovered local CSA’s, farmers markets and co-ops in the Houston area. The class is limited to 100 people and sells out so I recommend purchasing a ticket to ensure there’s still room. I was excited to make it in this time to taste the yummy raw food recipes I’ve seen on Kristina’s Fully Raw You tube channel. The Rawfully Organic co-op began in Kristina’s living room with 12 of her neighbors in 2007 and has now grown to over 6,000 members. Kristina has been fully raw for 10 years this month. She changed her diet and lifestyle after being ill and hospitalized and never looked back. You can learn more about Kristina and the co-op at www.rawfullyorganic.com. You can pick up your share at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, located at 4501 Woodway Drive, on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and 3400 Bissonett in the parking lot behind the red brick building on Saturdays from 11:00 to 2:00 p.m. The co-op now offers home delivery for a fee and always welcomes volunteers. 17 I ENJOYHOUSTON 17 ENJ NJO OY YHO HOUSTO HOUS USTO US ON

I arrived at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, signed in and was handed a packet with raw food recipes.Everyone receives a hug from Kristina as they enter the room with gorgeous, gigantic flowers adorning the walls. Physical touch is important to overall health and making that personal connection immediately created a warm and friendly environment. Kristina’s enthusiasm is contagious. She shared her personal testimony, passion for fresh food and helping others achieve wellness then made two raw food dressings to accompany our zucchini “pasta” and kale salad. Everyone lined up to sample the local meal and the Fully Raw juices were available for sale. I love her juices and tried the newest flavor, Cabana Cooler, made with pineapple, cucumber, spinach, celery, apple and mint. It did not disappoint! While we munched and crunched, Kristina answered questions and shared more information with the class. The Eat It Raw class was a great experience and the live demonstration of the dressings being made drove home the simplicity of the recipes. I recommend the class for anyone wanting to learn more about preparing local, seasonal foods. I plan on bringing my girls to a class in the near future. Remember to involve everyone in meal time and make it a family affair. HOUSTON|SPOTLIGHT

PROHIBITION SUPPER CLUB Prohibition Supperclub & Bar is a great date spot as well as a place to go for any other occasion or large gathering! It is magical ; [the] building was built in 1912 and was Houston’s first silent theatre, The ISIS Theatre. I recommend getting some oysters from the raw oyster bar, since you can see him chucking away right there! If you just want to grab a bite or just go in for drinks by all means do so! But I will say that thats not the only amazing thing about this place; it also has a theatre with live performances that you don’t want to miss! Performing Thursday through Saturday are the Moonlight dolls. Thursday’s show is American Vaudeville which focuses on, of course, vaudeville comedy and circus acts. Friday’s show is Provocateur. This show focuses on burlesque performances formed around the 1960’s French neo-burlesque idea of celebrating women and all of their beauty. As for Saturday night, the show is The Moonlight Show, my favorite show of all. and has that “showgirls” feel. These shows are exploding with talent. All of them are really flirty, sassy, sexy and funny! The shows are also accompanied by Houston’s award-winning and well known pianist Nick Greer. You don’t want to miss out on this experience! For more information on how to reserve a seat or for photos of the Supperclub see their website. http://www.prohibitionhouston.com Ͳ :ĞƐƐŝĐĂ 'ƌĞĞƌ ENJOYHOUSTON I 22
