-<9 )FCGD97H C: 5 5H98 CAAIB=HM :CF F95 ,9B=CFG 2(.+ "').- ' The City of Hobbs is looking at the prospect of a gated community for senior citizens. a place where beautiful homes ranging between 1,500 and 2,500 square feet offer a secure environment with 24 hour camera surveilance. Mayor Sam Cobb said senior housing has been one of his goals in order to help our many seniors have individual housing that meets growing needs.

The housing, Cobb said, will not be income restricted. Any senior making or possessing any amount of money or assets is eligable to lease or purchase one of the homes to be built. A senior residing in this gated community would have the

options of leasing one of the homes, purchasing a home, or opting to do a life estate to revert the property back to the management group upon the passing of the individual.

Since the homes in the Senior Living complex are designated for senior citizens, under the direction of a non profit organization, the age for participation may be persons 60 or older, but that age range has not been set at this time.

A common meal site could be added as well as other ammenities.

The homes would be market rate homes meaning they will vary in price based on market value for the area and size of the homes.

Those seniors living in this community would be highly mobile seniors who might want to eat in or head out to a local restaurant.

With a possible meal plan and area for dining, seniors would pay to have the additional option. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are seniors living in huge homes and only a fraction of the space is utilized. They are saddled with lawn maintenance and upkeep on their current homes. This would certainly allow them the opportunity to downsize and stay in town rather than having to leave to find independent senior living options elsewhere.â&#x20AC;? Cobb said.

In Eunice, years ago, the family had a store that sold newspapers and other items. Her late husband Max was Mayor of Eunice and was later, Mayor of Hobbs.

Wilma is 87, a delight to all who know her, and she said her secret to living happy and well is Jesus.

Twenty Senior Citizens in Hobbs recently took home turkeys donated by Seniors Standing Strong, Jubel Patterson, Albertson’s, Patsy Cline, and Heather Payne. It’s all part of the Seniors Standing Strong Organization’s commitment to providing special memories for Senior Citizens in the area, and acknowledging that this group of individuals should be honored and gifted throughout the year for their long-term service to the community, for their service in the military, and for the wisdom they bring to society.

Our Senior Citizens make up nearly a third of the population in Lea County, and in coming years, according to data, will triple in population demographic, making this the strongest group of decision makers, and the largest group of consumers for local and area businesses.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have wondered why there is no registry in the area to list caregivers or people who work in facilities or on their own who are fired for mistreating senior citizens in their care? Isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t it true that those who are fired or relieved of their duties often just go to work in another facility and continue to abuse and disrespect our elderly?â&#x20AC;?

There is no magazine just for senior citizens in the geographic area that focuses on needs or challenges that directly impact our senior citizens.

Through listening to elders and family members, Seniors Standing Strong, a nonprofit organization realized that there is much work to be done to educate seniors, relatives, friends, and caregivers so all receive the respect, dignity, and equality they richly deserve.

We share some of the comments made by seniors and their families in the immediate area, not to cast a negative light on those who fail seniors, but to shine a light on how seniors can be treated better. (&& '-, +(& -!", +

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Why are Hobbs Seniors placed on a waiting list after they meet all criteria for Meals on Wheels? It seems like seniors who need Meals on Wheels are put at great risk if they canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be served with food they so desparately need --- now -- not in several months.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Is the smell of urine that hits you in the face when you walk into a long-term care place a sign of neglect on the part of those who are supposed to be taking care of residents? Does that mean that our family members are not being helped to change wet depends but are instead being forced to sit or lay down in wet, uncomfortable underwear because these places are too busy to help them?â&#x20AC;?

Some clinicians might balk at the idea of referring an 85-year-old patient for coronary artery bypass surgery but, if the patient is otherwise fit for surgery and wants the operation, they should be offered the chance to have it. A report, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Achieving Age Equality in Health and Social Careâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, was published in 2009 containing various recommendations supporting the concept of equality in healthcare for the elderly.

Within minutes, she is trying to jerk the oxygen off of her face, is combative, and agitated. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She has never acted that way,â&#x20AC;? a family said. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a common occurrance for elderly in hospitals according to medical authorities, and what is prescribed to calm the patient down could have serious consequenses if medical workers do not determine the cause which, based on statistcal data, could be delirium. Suggested strategies to prevent delirium, according to the Veterans Administration (VA) include 5JC=85B79 C: DGM7<C57H=J9 A98=75H=CBG that can make the situation worse, and lead to further complications. Scientists refer to delirium as a mental dysfunction signified by a sudden onslaught

of confusion, inattention, and disorientation. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of the more common complications of hospital visits for elderly patients, the VA states, â&#x20AC;&#x201D;approximately 20% of all elderly patients, 50% of those in surgery post-op, and 60% to 85% of patients on ventilation exhibit the signs. According to Veterans Administration studies, Delirium is associated with multiple serious outcomes including increased morbidity, length of hospital stay, healthcare costs, institutionalization, and mortality in surgical settings, older adults and those with multiple medical conditions are at increased risk for postoperative delirium. Delirium may be under-recognized by healthcare providers and it can be difficult to resolve.

U.S. National Library of Medicine research points to hospitalacquired delirium as a common and dangerous condition that often goes unnoticed and untreated, an oversight that experts in geriatric medicine say is costing the health care system untold millions of dollars. Hospital delirium can occur in patients with no prior symptoms of dementia, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s often caused by common medications and the actions of health care workers.

Medications such as sleeping pills, sedatives, and narcotic painkillers commonly prescribed in hospital settings can trigger deliriumâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; and immobilizing the patient makes it worse. Recent studies

show delirium has rather alarming long-term effects. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been linked to long-term memory loss, mental impairment, and reduced brain size.

This type of delirium results in large part from the actions of medical workers, according to Dr. E. Wesley Ely, a professor of medicine and critical care at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Even well-meaning doctors are doing damage without knowing it,â&#x20AC;? he said. Elderly patients are more fragile than younger patients. Even if an elderly person has had few health complications and no symptoms of dementia before the hospital stay, he or she is much more vulnerable in the hospital than a younger person with a similar illness or injury. Even a level of care thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s slightly less than perfect could derail an elderly patientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recovery.

Sometimes, elderly patients are seen by several physicians rather than oneâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and physicians may or may not know the patientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s prior history. A disoriented elderly person may not be able to communicate effectively with doctors and nursesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;which can be a problem if no family member is there to advocate.

DIABETES MEDICATIONS December 2015: An FDA safety review has resulted in adding new warnings to the labels of a specific class of type 2 diabetes medicines -- sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, about the risks of too much acid in the blood and of serious urinary tract infections.

Both conditions can result in hospitalization. Medicines in the SGLT2 inhibitor class include canagliflozin, dapagliflozin, and empagliflozin.

Earlier in May, FDA had issued a drug safety communication warning about the risk of ketoacidosis with SGLT2 inhibitors, and alerting that the Agency would continue to evaluate this safety issue.

%2 ( -+ -, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is again cautioning consumers that chicken jerky products for dogs (also sold as chicken tenders, strips or treats) may be associated with illness in dogs. In the last 12 months, FDA has seen an increase in the number of complaints it received of dog illnesses associated with consumption of chicken jerky products imported from China. FDA is advising consumers who choose to feed their dogs chicken jerky products to watch their dogs closely for any or all of the following signs that may occur within hours to days of feeding the products: decreased appetite; decreased activity; vomiting; diarrhea, sometimes with blood; increased water consumption and/or increased urination. If the dog shows any of these signs, stop feeding the chicken jerky product. Owners should consult their veterinarian if signs are severe or persist for more than 24 hours. Blood tests may indicate kidney failure (increased urea nitrogen and creatinine). Urine tests may indicate Fanconi syndrome (increased glucose). Although most dogs appear to recover, some reports to the FDA have involved dogs that have died. Veterinarians and consumers alike should report cases of animal illness associated with pet foods to the FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator in their state or go to http://www.fda.gov/petfoodcomplaints.

A review of the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database from March 2013 to May 2015 identified 73 cases of ketoacidosis in patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, treated with SGLT2 inhibitors. Symptoms of ketoacidosis include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, tiredness, and trouble breathing.

t 1 cup pinto beans, dry t 6 cups water t 8 small corn tortillas t 1 can (about 15 ounces) low-sodium peas, drained t 1⁄2 cup (about 4 ounces) ham, cooked and diced t 4 egg whites t 2 teaspoons vegetable oil t 1 cup fresh tomato salsa Directions 1. Soak the pinto beans in 3 cups of water overnight in the refrigerator. Drain.

Boil the beans in 3 cups fresh water until they are soft. Drain the water and mash the beans into a paste.

2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 3. Place tortillas on a cookie sheet and bake for 1 to 2 minutes.

Remove cookie sheet from oven and let tortillas cool.

4. Spoon 1⁄4 cup of mashed beans on each tortilla. Drain peas and put 1⁄4 cup of peas on top of the beans. Add 2 tablespoons of diced ham on top of peas.

5. Bake the tortillas for about 8 minutes.

6. In a mixing bowl, mix egg whites with vegetable oil.

7. Cook the egg whites in a nonstick pan over medium heat until firm. Cut the egg into 8 pieces.

8. Place baked tortillas on a plate.

Cover ham and mashed beans with a piece of egg.

9. Add 2 tablespoons of salsa on each tortilla, and serve.

He is a well seasoned administrator who retired after serving Good Samaritan for 20 years and stayed to serve as Pastor of the Church of Christ in Lovington. There was a need for him to return to his position at Good Sam after the departure of the administrator who was there, so he prayed about it and returned.

He will serve the church as pastor, and will serve Good Samaritan as administrator. David said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;ministry takes place in the community not behind the desk.â&#x20AC;? He enjoys practicing Christianity in the setting, and believes in the philosophy of Good Samaritan Society. In reality, David has come out of retirement

twice to help out and has also traveled to Alamagordo to help the facility there during the sickness of their administrator. His plan is to serve as administrator for 14 months at Good Sam in Lovington. Meanwhile, he is also seeing a project through to replace plumbing lines at the facility entailing drilling through concrete floors throughout building wings and replacing connecting pipes that are being repaired by contractors. David enjoys his work and the residents, and works hard to bring sunshine into their lives.

Landmark at Desert Gardens new Administrator is Lynn Berry, LPN. Lynn Berry moves on as our Morning Star Program Director and leads our Assisted Living and Memory Care teams, guided by goodness, loyalty, faith, and fun as our new administrator. Mrs. Berry has been a nurse in Hobbs for over 23 years, working in the hospital, in prison nursing, and for Dr. John Kernan, a local internal medicine physician, specializing in geriatric care.

Mrs. Berry is a confident, down-toearth, warm and inspiring leader. She %2'' ++2 has extraordinarily high standards, leading her team with care and compassion with her accountabilitycoaching style, expecting the best of each employee.

Mrs. Berryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passion for elder care, her connections within the community, her strong leadership skills, and her nursing background are a benefit to our residents, families and our care teams at Landmark at Desert Gardens.

For Mrs. Berry, this is more than a job. It is a calling to make a difference in elder care. She models for her team how elders are honored and treated as whole human beings no matter what their physical or cognitive status. Dorothy Runnels is a picture of hope for all seniors as they age.

She is 93 and feeling good. Nothing seems to slow her down, not even the four by-passes she had at age 80, and a pacemaker she received last year. When asked about her secret to living long and well, Dorothy said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love everybody, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hold grudges, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t look for fault, and look for the good in everybody.â&#x20AC;? Dorothy was never a heavy drinker, and never smoked.

She eats a lot of vegetables, and very little meat, but said her daily favorites include onions and a lot of salt on everything. She drives regulary, and has a social schedule that is full. Dorothy serves on the board of directors of Lea County Museum, plays bridge two days a week, works in the yard some, cooks, hosts parties, and attends stock club. Inviting people out to enjoy the beautiful tree lined property at Humble City between Hobbs and Lovington tops her list of favorites, and when she is not having company, she is driving here and there to meet others for lunch in town, or offering up some sage advice and a soft shoulder for those in need. Her home has been the blessing and a memory builder for many who have been married

there, and hosted organizational gatherings.

Her story is intriguing looking back over the years. Her late Husband, U.S. Congressman Harold Runnels served 10 years in Congress, and Dorothy was deeply involved. She served as the Democratic Party County Chairman, ran for County Commissioner in the 1980s, and ran for U.S. Congress as a writein candidate after Harold passed away. Dorothy ran Runnels Mud Company in Lovington from 19841992, but before she closed the business in 1992, she made sure every employee had another job before closing the doors.

One of her favorite things to do is attend the 1st Ladyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Luncheon in Washington D.C. which includes past and present wives of Senators, Congressmen, Ambassadors, and Cabinet Members. She has met four presidents including JFK, Prime Ministers, and the King of Spain over the years.

Dorothy pulled her shift many times to help with worthy causes like the annual raising bail for charity behind makeshift jail bars, while wearing the jailhouse blues stripes. She has made a difference, and has brought sunshine to countless people.

Manna Outreach provides temporary shelter especially when hard times unexpectedly happen. They help with a place to stay so those who seek help can look for a job, find and save money for a place to live, need a hearty meal, or are down on their luck.
