Michelle Gill, who owns Faith Bridge Designs in Willow Park, calls the look “Farmhouse Chic” and says it’s a way of bringing a fresh feel to both new construction and remodeled homes. “People are getting tired of the deep dark colors, like the dark woods and the gold and red,” said Gill. “They’re bringing more light in, like corrugated metals and tins, and lighter color groups.” The hot shades this year are in a family that Gill calls “griege,” which is a shade of grey that incorporates both the cool and warm tones, making it very versatile, especially on walls. “I’m really encouraging my clients to stick with neutrals on the ‘bones’ of a room - the walls, the major furniture pieces and that sort of thing,” Gill said. “Too much of anything is too much.” Gill said that approach then allows for more creativity in accent and accessories. “I recently did a room where we added an antler chandelier,” Gill said. “You can still blend in the rustic look, it’s just that now we have a mix of the styles and it’s not completely rustic.
“It’s more open, lighter, more modern. You don’t have to go with all one style of anything now.” Gill said that she’s still seeing certain style elements from the rustic movement, like burlap and linen, but the palette has become more neutral. “You can put cools and taupes in a room and it doesn’t have to look sterile,” Gill said. “That’s where the rustic elements come into play, without becoming overwhelming.”

Gill says the style in Parker County is a little different that in more urban areas. Mixed metals are becoming popular in large cities but haven’t caught yet on away from those spots. “I just did a house in Carrollton that used a lot of mixed metals, like chrome and gold,” Gill said. “It was really eye catching, but that’s not really the kind of things I’m seeing people out here want to use.” What people do want, Gill said, is vintage pieces with the whitewashed look. “They want more natural woods now,” Gill said. “The blend of rustic and modern allows for a lot of flexibility and people are trying new things.” For the especially adventurous, Gill said that going with a light wall and dark trim is a recent look she loves. “It’s a little more European old world style,” Gill said. “It’s just beautiful.” 10 March

Many homeowners find it a challenge to grow a traditional garden or landscape in the sometimes extreme Texas conditions. The Native Plant Society of Texas, which promotes the conservation, research, and utilization of the native plants of Texas, suggests gar14

It’s easy to get overwhelmed or distracted once the shopping begins, so come prepared with a list and a general idea of your plan. Nurseries that carry good native species are easy to find, and gardeners can consult a Supplier Directory online maintained by the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center for sources. A simple internet search can also provide a wealth of ideas. For those seeking more variety, Texas A&M Agrilife and Texas Tech University both publish lists of native and non-native species that can do well in Texas weather.

The Parker County Master Gardeners will also offer plants that are great for Parker County at their annual plant sale, which will be held April 9 at the Parker County Extension Office, 604 N. Main St. in Weatherford. Here is a list of some of the top species that can add hardy beauty to any home:
This perennial flowers during the entire growing season, with true blue flower. It is tolerant of both heat and humidity and pest resistant. It grows between 18 and 30 inches tall.
Mexican Heather:
Aloe
This flowering plant grows extremely quickly and thrives in drought conditions. The flowers are most commonly purple but can also come in white and yellow. The plants grow to be around two feet tall and enjoy full sun to partial shade. They can bloom from spring all the way through fall.
“Belinda’s Dream” Rose This rose is disease tolerant and was bred in Texas to withstand hot temperatures. It is capable of enduring full sun, even in the summer months, and makes a great cutting flower. The shrub can bloom periodically from spring through fall.
Begonias these flowers are best in partial to full shade and are mildly drought tolerant. They are slightly smaller with more sun. They are excellent for mass bedding, borders and container gardening.
Mexican Bush Sage Tough, drought tolerant and also highly pest resistant. They can take full sun and Texas heat. This plant has spikes of either purple and white or purple blossoms and can grown up to 16

three feet tall and three feet wide.
Mystic Spires Blue Salvia
This medicinal plant is also often grown for ornamental purposes. It is relatively pest resistant and tolerant of heat. The plant itself grows between two and three feet tall, but the flower spikes can grow to a height well beyond that.
Deciduous Holly Easy to grow, this plant prefers moist soil in sun or part shade. It produces both small white flowers and orange-red berries that persist into winter. A strong choice for people who want to attract wildlife, especially birds.

This aloe is native to south Texas, but is also appropriate for those wanting a native feel in their garden in North Texas.
Plumbago Cape Plumbago Also called the sky flower, this perennial loves the Texas heat. The flowers can attract butterflies and this plant is tolerant of both heat and humidity, and is resistant to both pests and disease.
Hinckley Columbine A rare plant native to only one place in Texas, it has fern-like foliage and buttercup yellow flowers. Grows to 2-3 feet tall in partial shade. The Hinckley Columbine blooms mainly in early spring.

More and more, homeowners in Parker County are turning to their own backyards to supply themselves with food. Nowhere is this more obvious than the farm fresh egg trend – backyard chicken coops have become commonplace in many rural homes and in city neighborhoods. According to one 18 March

homeowner, it’s a great way to keep things a little bit country. Carrie Woychesin grew up collecting eggs from her father’s chickens in an unincorporated part of Parker County. It gave her a taste of the country experience, she said, and she wants her two daughters to have the same opportunity. “When we bought our house (in Aledo), we visited some friends in Ryan Place in Fort Worth and they had chickens in their backyard,” Woychesin said. “I realized then, anyone can do this. You don’t have to have a farm.”

Woychesin’s family is starting small, with three Delawares, while they learn the ropes. Her two daughters will be very involved in the process, she said. “The big thing for me is that I want to teach them that food doesn’t just come from the store,” Woychesin said. “This is one little thing that we can control about what we are putting into our bodies. And they can learn good lessons from this.” Robbie Kelley, who keeps 30 chickens on his land off Hwy. 377, agrees that the lessons are valuable. His family got their chickens as a way to teach their daughter Katlyn responsibility: she is not only in charge of caring for the chickens and collecting the eggs, she takes the collected eggs to her mother’s business, CrossFit Aledo, and sells them. The money goes into a savings account that will go toward a vehicle when she’s old enough to drive. Her business even has a name: Hen House Productions.

“She’s really good about making sure they are taken care of,” said Kelley. “She has to feed them and clean the coops, and of course collect the eggs.” Kelley estimates they get 13-14 eggs a day from their 28 hens, which are four different breeds. He built the coop and pen himself using reclaimed wood and donated materials. Like Woychesin, he said the process has involved some trial and error, but has been mostly smooth. “I have a degree in agriculture so I knew going in what I was doing,” he said. “But for someone new, it’s really not hard to learn.” The benefit, in addition to being a learning experi22 March

For gardeners looking to fill their table with home grown vegetables, it’s all about the timing. Whether planting vegetables or gardens, early spring is especially tricky because a late frost is always possible in Texas. “A lot of people don’t always plan their schedules right, and they can put things out too soon, and run the risk of cold weather messing with their plans,” said Manny Pace, who owns Mingo’s Nursery and Garden Center. “But with a little knowledge, they have a higher chance for success.” Pace said that the number one resource is a simple calen-
dar. Paying attention to the frost predictions, and preparation, are key, as well as using the right tools should the weather take an unexpected turn. “A lot of people wrap their plants in plastic, but that’s actually the worst thing you can do,” Pace said. “The plastic acts as sort of a conductor and it grabs all the cold air and keeps it inside with the plant.” Pace said that plants won’t necessarily be killed by being wrapped in plastic, but it will impact their performance. He recommends a dropcloth of sorts that allows the plants to breathe and still shields them from heat. “You want something lightweight so there won’t be any breakage,” said Pace. “But of course you also want them protected from outside elements.

Sometimes you have to plant a round of things early, and then go back and redo it later in the season to keep things productive.” And if all else fails, ask an expert. “People who do this are always happy to answer questions,” Pace said. “I’ll always help someone who wants to learn more about gardening.”
