Founder’s Log: Stardate 2015 Year Two at Other Worlds Austin, and, like some sort of exponentially expanding zombie virus, the festival has grown faster than I could have predicted. Even if I had some sort of patented prophetic periscope stolen from a steampunk submarine on its way to search the murky depths for Ry’leh, this would be a surprise. Throughout the year we brought six unique SciFi films to Austin (CALL GIRL OF CTHULHU, THE QUIET HOUR, THE MIDNIGHT SWIM, LISTENING, NIGHTMARE CODE, AND UNCANNY), as well as added a Screenwriting Competition, increased outreach with other genre festivals across the country, and picked up a Best of Austin Award from the Austin Chronicle – Best Visions of the Future. I am also very proud to introduce the inaugural Mary Shelley Award, a groundbreaking prize sponsored by Canine Productions of Seattle. Even before announcing the award, I realized we were going to have a special program this year, with strong female protagonists in many of the films (POLDER, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEB, CURTAIN), the female co-written and largely female ensemble of OTHER HALVES, and the female written and directed EMBERS, not to mention the gender-charged NO MEN BEYOND THIS POINT. There are even more films written and directed by women in our shorts programs, or placing female characters front and center. Or female robots. What else can you find in our program? Paranoia. Aliens. Bowler hats. LoFi Video Games. HiFi Video Games. Goggles. Zombies. Nazis. Pocket watches (did I mention there is a Steampunk documentary?) Don’t miss out on seeing at least one of the amazing shorts programs. And thank you for glimpsing over the horizon with us.

A mysterious woman stranded by the side of the road hitches a ride with a passing stranger – neither of them is who they seem.
An alternate history deadpan mockumentary following 37-year-old Andrew Myers, the youngest man still alive. With women able to reproduce without men since 1953, they’ve stopped giving birth to male babies entirely. Working as a housekeeper for a family of women, Andrew finds himself at the center of a battle to prevent men from going extinct. Men have gathered onto reservations, and the idea of a romantic relationship with one would be laughable. This brilliant, politically-charged film that just made its North American premiere at TIFF asks: what would the world be like if women were in charge? Mark Sawers graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1989 and has since been active as a screenwriter and filmmaker. He has developed various shorts, television series and fiction films. In Cannes, he won the Canal+ Award for Best Short Film for SHOES OFF! (1998). He also directed segments on The Kids In the Hall.

Embers (Texas Premiere) Post-Apocalyptic Claire Carré | USA | 86 min Dec 5th, 7:30 (Alpha), 8:00 (Beta) Writers: Claire Carré, Charles Spano Cast: Jason Ritter, Iva Gocheva, Greta Fernández, Tucker Smallwood, Karl Glusman, Dominique Swain The world has moved on. In the wake of a global neurological epidemic, those who remain search for meaning and connection in a world without memory. Five interwoven stories explore life without recollection in a future that has no past. A boy longs for a role model, a young man embraces his rage, a teacher hunts for a cure, a couple clings to each other desperate to preserve their feelings, and a young woman wants nothing more than to forget. Filled with intense performances and breathtaking cinematography, this is the rare science fiction film that excels in its lack of exposition. An atmospheric tone poem in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, EMBERS captures the human condition, stripped away of everything but personality and instinct. Claire Carré is currently developing the science fiction episodic series The Singularity and her second feature, The Shade of the Sea. EMBERS was selected as one of ten narrative projects in the 2014 IFP Independent Filmmaker Lab. When she’s not circumnavigating the globe as a director and editor, she is in upstate New York playing video games, writing, and practicing archery.
