The summer hasn’t just been about vacation for some students. Kingwood High School’s Whitney Wilson had quite a summer. She traveled all the way to China, however, she wasn’t there for a vacation, she was there representing her country at the youth Olympics. Whitney was chosen to the United States Rugby team. Wilson was amazed by the atmosphere of the Olympic Games. “It was a lot of fun. The rugby was awesome. They completely exceeded every expectation I had for it. It was just like you’d imagine the Olympics to be,â€? Wilson said. Aside from the actual games it was a very easygoing atmosphere for the youth Olympians. “It was really friendly. It didn’t matter what country you were from. Everybody talked to each other and said hi,â€? Wilson remarked. The team and she even hung out with girls from other countries like Spain and Australia. During the matches team USA had a subbing rotation going so all of the girls were splitting the playing time to keep everyone fresh. The girls would play the whole game, half the time, 4 minutes to go, or 2 minutes to go. “It’s really fast and really tiring especially at that level,â€? Wilson admitted, “Everybody played equal playing time.â€? During the matches other athletes from other sports were at the game to watch and support the team. It was sold out almost every game. During the teams stay they took in some of the other events as well. They watched anything from Handball to Taekwondo. They wanted to see sports that they would not normally see back home while showing support for their fellow countrymen as well. In order to be considered for the team the girls must be nominated by committee members that were able to watch them compete in QDWLRQDO DQG UHJLRQDO WRXUQDPHQWV DIWHU ÂżUVW ÂżOOLQJ RXW DQ RQOLQH application through USOC. “They didn’t tell us anything about it. They just said you’ll hear back soon,â€? Wilson said. She was noticed
in Las Vegas at a 7s tournament in January. While she was at a rugby camp at Penn State in Pennsylvania she received an email informing her that she had made the USA youth Olympic rugby team. “I cried! It was awesome! I was so excited. Since March I had checked my HPDLO HYHU\ VLQJOH GD\ EHFDXVH , ÂżJXUHG WKDWÂśV KRZ WKH\ ZHUH JRLQJ to contact me. It was something that I was always looking forward to,â€? Wilson said of her reaction to making the team. The committee had emailed her stating that they would know about their status on or before July 2nd. It was simply stated: If you don’t get an email, you don’t make the team. It was around 8:00 PM and she still had not received an email. She had all but prepared her concession speech ZKHQ VKH ÂżQDOO\ UHFHLYHG WKH HPDLO VKH ZDV ZDLWLQJ IRU Âł, FULHG , was so happy.â€? Wilson worked out with a professional trainer to prepare her for the games. She also played in a variety of tournaments over the summer. The team had a camp in San Diego, CA at the Olympic training center that was 5 days long. Unfortunately the team only had about 3-4 actual practices with each other before they were thrown into competition. :KHQ WKH\ ZHUH EDFN RQ WKH ÂżHOG WKH IRFXV WXUQHG WR ZLQQLQJ Though they knew it wouldn’t be easy as Australia, Canada, and China were heavily favored to win they weren’t going down withRXW D ÂżJKW 8OWLPDWHO\ :LOVRQ DQG KHU WHDP ORVW WR $XVWUDOLD LQ WKH semis and then to China in the 3rd place match ending their Olympic JDPHV 7KH\ ÂżQLVKHG WK RYHUDOO Now Wilson can focus on the Kingwood High School season ahead. $IWHU ÂżQLVKLQJ QG LQ VWDWH ODVW \HDU WKH JLUOV DUH KRSLQJ WR ZLQ LW DOO this year. A Youth Olympic Gold Medalist
Myles Marshall can add an accomplishment on to his already impressive year. In May, he and his 1600m relay team won state for Kingwood High School. He also won gold in his individual race, 800m, during the state tournament. Now, he can call himself a Junior Olympic gold medalist as he won the gold in the 800m with a time of 1:49.14 at the Junior Olympics in Nanjing, China. Myles has been hard at work over the summer to prepare him for this event and other races he had going on leading up to the Youth Olympics. He didn’t have to do it alone as his mother was there every step of the way coaching and encouraging her son. “I did a lot of speed training at a race pace,” Marshall said, “I wasn’t on the track as much as people may think. I went to the track about twice a week but they were good, quality workouts. If I was off the track, I’d be doing something endurance wise like a longer, faster run.” In April, Marshall had to qualify for the Olympic trials in Florida. He was the only American in the 800m area trials that competed in his race and he won with a 1:51.5 time. Thus, he was picked to represent the United States of America in China. His experience in China was “great” as he explored the town and culture of Nanjing. “Part of the games was getting to know different people from different countries so they had all sorts of ways to connect with other athletes.” Marshall said. They had ways to share contact information instantly by sharing tags that connect by wi¿ 7KHUH ZDV DOVR ³FXOWXUH ERRWKV´ WKDW VKRZHG GLIIHUHQW cultures for the athletes to experience. Communication was, luckily, not a problem as most of the Junior Olympians Marshall had contact with spoke English as well. “It was a great atmosphere,” Marshall said. During the 800m race Marshall competed against runners from Switzerland, Ethiopia, Morocco, Spain, and Uganda to name a few. The T Th h U USA SA ttrackk group tthat SA h tM Marshall h ll traveled t l d with did some shopping in the area which consisted of some inexpensive places as well as some very expensive places, usually a mall. They then went to the City Wall of Nanjing which is over 600 years old and is still well preserved. It was the longest city wall in the world and the city enclosed by it remained the world’s largest until the 17th century. Marshall was welcomed back home by a rising and loud ovation at the halftime of the Kingwood vs Katy football game this past Friday night. Cheers of “USA! USA! USA!” and “MYLES! MYLES! MYLES!” were heard loudly by the crowd even before he was announced over the intercom. “It really showed a lot of respect for the sport and what I did. It was nice to see,” Marshall admitted. Now that school is back in session Myles can focus on the high school season ahead. Fun Facts
Atascocita’s Soccer Youth Olympian
This was the second Summer Youth Olympic Games.
Kelsey Brann is not your typical high school sophomore going thru the motions of every day life. Instead, Kelsey is an extremely motivated student athlete that competes at an elite level around the world. How motivated you may ask‌so motivated that Brann only slept in her own bed eleven nights this summer due to competitions. Brann is a goalkeeper for Atascocita girl’s soccer and has played on multiple select teams including recreational leagues and club organizations. Recently, Brann was invited to play for Mexico in the 2014 Youth Olympics held in Nanjing, China a few weeks ago. Brann, has duel citizenship in the United States and Mexico, so when the U.S. didn’t qualify for the Youth Olympics, the decision was easy for Kelsey to join Mexico’s team. ,Q -XQH %UDQQ Ă€HZ WR 0H[LFR IRU D ZHHN WUDLQLQJ ZKLFK LQ WXUQ ZDV EDVLFDOO\ WU\ RXWV DQG OHIW D IHZ GD\V HDUO\ VR VKH FRXOG Ă€\ WR 6HDWWOH DQG SOD\ ZLWK KHU FOXE WHDP LQ WKH 1DWLRQDO 6HPL )LQDOV %UDQQ WKHQ WUDYHOOHG WR 9LUJLQLD WR SOD\ ZLWK KHU FOXE LQ WKH 1DWLRQDO )LQDOV DQG ÂżQLVKHG WK RXW RI DOO WKH FOXEV LQ WKH country. From there she got an invite to attend the Puma Corporation Camp at Disney in Orlando, Florida. In July, Kelsey returned to Mexico to train for 3-weeks before they departed to China. Only 18 girls made it on Mexico’s team and travelled to Nanjing. When asked about how the competition in China was, Brann FKXFNOHG DQG DGPLWWHG ÂłH[WUHPHO\ GLIÂżFXOW HVSHFLDOO\ WKH WHDP IURP &KLQD ,W ZDV UHDOO\ IDVW SOD\ DQG LW ZDV FUD]\ ´ 0H[LFR RSHQHG XS WKH <RXWK 2O\PSLFV DJDLQVW &KLQD DQG ÂżQLVKHG DJDLQVW 6ORYDNLD ÂłWKH competition itself was hard, but I think the most thrilling and equally terrifying thing in the game was the DPRXQW RI SHRSOH WKDW ZHUH WKHUH 7KHUH ZHUH DW OHDVW LQ DWWHQGDQFH ´ 7KH ÂżQDO VFRUH RI 0H[LFR versus Slovakia was 3-1, after each team inadvertently scored in their own goal. Mexico earned bronze in the Youth Olympics behind gold medalists, China, and silver medalists, Venezuela. Slovakia, Papua New Guinea, and Namibia also participated in the Games. These Youth Olympic Games happen every four years, just like the adult Olympics, and according to Kelsey’s dad, “you would not believe the intricacy that China went through! You would have thought you were at a full blown adult Olympics!â€? Needless to say, the Games did not disappoint and was an amazing experience for Kelsey and her family watching 7,600 miles away. Kelsey’s most memorable experience: “the medal ceremony. It was an amazing experience to stand up on the podium and have everyone watch you in the stands bend down and have them present you with a medal.â€? Brann has three more years left at Atascocita High School under the direction of Coach Nichols. Her freshman year she was the starting goalkeeper on varsity and won Goalkeeper of the Year for the district DQG VW 7HDP $OOVWDWH $OWKRXJK VKH VHW WKH VWDQGDUGV UHDOO\ KLJK KHU ÂżUVW \HDU VKH ZRXOG OLNH WR VWULYH IRU these awards every year and make playoff history within the Lady Eagle’s soccer program. As you can imagine, multiple schools are looking at Kelsey to play at the collegiate level, but as of now she is still weighing her options. One thing she does know, she wants to be an Olympian.
It is organized by the International Olympic Committee.
7KH ÂżUVW VXPPHU 2O\PSLFV was held in Singapore in August of 2010.
China, the host country, took home the most medals overall totaling 131.

Kingwood Park Golf Will Make A Mark On Houston Golf
Kingwoodd Park’s golff program has nott one one, nott two two, butt three girls currently in the program thatt headd golff coach Angela Chancellor believes will “leave a mark on Houston golf.â€? Senior Lexi “Fuzzyâ€? Brooks, junior Hannah Alberto, and sophomore Ariana Saenz have been competing in tournaments across the nation recently and we got a chance to talk to them about their results and experiences at the tournaments they competed at. Hannah competed in the AJGA David Toms event in Shreveport, LA in July and tied for 2nd place. While she was there she had a chance to meet with some college coaches, one of them being from McNeese. She played a lot of tournaments leading up to this one and was consistently winning, which earned her ‘stars’, which counted towards AJGA events. Every time she entered an AJGA tournament, it took away 4 ‘stars.’ She had earned the rights to play in 4 WRXUQDPHQWV XVLQJ WKH ÂľVWDUVÂś ZKLFK H[HPSWHG KHU WR TXDOLI\ IRU 6KUHYHSRUW Âł7KH\ÂśUH UHDOO\ KDUG WR JHW LQ WR ´ &RDFK &KDQFHOORU VDLG Âł,WÂśV WKDW ÂżUVW VWHS of getting in that’s the hardest.â€? Hannah said. She signed up and won 2nd place, which earned her a trip to regionals. Only 11 kids in her age level made it out of the whole country. They televised everything at Augusta. “It was big push for junior golf,â€? Coach Chancellor said. Perks included meeting Bubba Wilson amongst others for Hannah. The perks were even better. The girls were treated to magic shows, ice cream trucks, and a photo booth. Not to mention all the food you could want. As far as the tournament was concerned, Fuzzy was struggling with a back injury due to bulging disks down her spine and the medics at the tournament couldn’t really help her out. She believes that golf is a great alternative for a kid who didn’t make the cut for volleyball or basketball and with only 3 options in middle school in terms of competitive sports; there’s belief that golf could have an impact in the middle school system. The layouts consist of levels numbered 1-5 with 5 being the most extreme in which they do layouts and double pulls. Then you have level 1 which involves no tumbling. Kingwood Park will have to wait to see which level they will be aligned in to. As far as this season goes, no decision has been made in terms of competition as they weigh their options. There are 22 girls on the squad this season from last year’s squad of 20. With a talented sophomore class that came up it gave Kingwood Park some great options. The squad has 3 “fullsâ€? on the team which is a girl capable of performing a layout with a 360 spin and is not a maneuver that comes easy. The Panthers have two captains: Sarah Schneider and Haley Wilkerson. They also have a co-captain: Sadie Canion. Sara Schneider said her and the captain’s responsibilities include putting together pep rallies, making sure everyone is on time, and knows their stuff. Schneider also serves as NHS president, Key Club vice-president of service, varsity track, student council, and speech and debate. “Actually I’ve been on a whacky sleep schedule since‌ HYHU ´ 6FKQHLGHU ODXJKHG DERXW Âł, ÂżQG WLPH IRU HYHU\WKLQJ , PDQDJH ´ :D\ EDFN ZKHQ VKH ZDV in the 7th grade she admitted that she just wanted to be a mascot on the squad but a friend talked her into being a cheerleader. Kingwood Park Silver Stars Dance Team The Silver ilverr Stars off Kingwoodd Parkk are preparing forr quite a year year. Ledd by the 2012 Texas Dance Educators’ Association Directorr off the Year, Cyndi Vaughn, the Silver Stars have several events involving performance and competition as well as the community. Director 9DXJKQ ÂżOOHG XV LQ RQ WKH EXV\ \HDU WKH\ KDYH DKHDG Last school year in March the Silver Stars performed on the USS Missouri at Pearl Harbor over Spring Break and this season they are staying in state to compete in Nationals. In fact, a former Kingwood Park Silver Star, Hannah Marucci, is a member of the Rangerettes as a Lt. Colonel. There are a total of 35 girls on the Silver Stars and only 5 of them are rookies. “We have a really good seasoned team and it’s been really nice to be able to just refresh everybody,â€? Vaughn said. “They take care of business much better with having this many old girls on the team.â€? There are a total of 13 seniors and one of these seniors has a big job to do. Lexi Richardson is the Colonel and her duties are to “cleanâ€? and “polishâ€? the routines with Vaughn and to help with discipline and demerits for the whole team whenever Director Vaughn is not physically there due to meetings and other responsibilities. “I’m in charge of every practice when Ms. Vaughn isn’t here. It’s very hectic sometimes,â€? Richardson confessed. Richardson has been dancing since she was 3-years-old. Her mother, Lisa, works close as a counselor at Humble HS. Senior Erika Davies is the Lt. Vaughn said. They plan on switching the practice locations every year. The performance will be held at halftime of the football game between Kingwood Park and Humble on September 12th. Another fun event the girls are doing is Dancing With Dads. There will be two practices held before the performance on September 5th at halftime of the football game. The theme this year for the Silver Stars is “Dance like a beast. Train like a beauty.â€? It’s all about getting ready for nationals in the spring. Thus, the dads will dance to the Village People classic “Macho Manâ€? and will dress up in tacky workout gear: sweatbands, gym shorts, etc. Even though it seems to be a humiliating performance for the dads, they are very committed and do their best to be there for the girls. Another funny duty of the dads is to put makeup on their daughters, and if that wasn’t bad enough for the girls, the dads will perform this blindfolded! Vaughn admits that it turns out to be a very fun event. The Silver Stars began their season in August, two weeks before school starts and go through football season into the playoffs. Then there’s the December show in which they learn Christmas routines on top of their regular routines. In January they start contest season, which JRHV WKURXJK 0DUFK WU\RXWV DUH LQ $SULO DQG D ELJ ÂżQDO VKRZ FRQFOXGHV WKH VHDVRQ LQ 0D\ Written by Mark M. Johnson

Pearland’s Quest For Another State Title Pearland football had a magical season this past year. They won district and defeated Cy-Fair 10-3 in the Region III championship game. The Oilers moved on to defeat San Antonio Madison 38 LQ WKH VWDWH VHPL ¿QDOV HDUQLQJ WKHP a chance at the Texas State Title game against the Allen Eagles. Unfortunately for Pearland, it did not end the way they had hoped as their title dreams were put to rest with a 63-28 loss in the ¿QDO JDPH RI WKH VHDVRQ ³<RX FDQ¶W put that whole season into that one loss. That season got a chance to play for the state championship,” Coach Heath said, “Many teams would have loved that opportunity.” Pearland has experienced the other side before. They won state back in 2010 under Coach Heath. Though, it doesn’t make it any easier to have taken such a tough loss so close to another state title. The football program will depend on a couple of guys to help lead the team. Senior DE Deonte Givens returns for his third season on varsity. He began at WKH DJH RI RQ WKH IRRWEDOO ¿HOG DQG played at AAU, a local select football team. “I just like to hit,” Givens admitted. He’s anticipating another shot at Manvel, the school that handed them their only loss during the regular season last year. “Last year we came out not ready…this year we will be ready,” Givens said. Senior OL Willie Williams also returns for his third season on varsity. He earned an All-State award last year after a stellar defensive season. “I don’t give up sacks,” Williams stated, “I don’t quit on anything.” Manvel is on his radar as well but he admits that the thought of playing and beating Southlake Carroll would be a great experience based on the reputa-
tion that they have. Both of the boys have garnered interest in colleges but have yet to make a decision. Their main IRFXV LV ¿QLVKLQJ ZKDW WKH\ VWDUWHG ODVW season.

Pearland lost around 40 players from last year’s team. “If you live in the past you’re going to die in the past. If you live for the future you’ll never get there. You have to live for the present.” Coach Heath stated. He doesn’t consider himself a numbers man -- more of a generalist. So he doesn’t look ahead to a particular game and anticipate that one team in particular. He tries to make sure his team knows who their opponent is going to be next, focus on them, and just look forward to that game.
Last season Pearland all but dominated district play having only lost one game to Manvel. Other than that the Oilers secured victory rather easily in district. Coach Heath never wants to say that dominating district is something to expect. “We believe we have the opportunity to win each week, but saying and doing are two different things. We’ve got to go out and produce.” Coach Heath stated.

A comment was even left on twitter stating “Toughest opener in a while.” Coach Heath is used to playing tough opening games having played Madison in past openers. “Every week you want to play a tough opponent and learn from that game,” Coach Heath said. The Oilers played well enough to defeat College Park 25-14.
Coach Heath feels blessed at how far Pearland football has come from having to play in an old stadium in which they had to dress in an old gym. “To come from where we were then and where we are now is a blessing.” Coach Heath stated. From a new scoreboard to live streaming games, Pearland football certainly has come a long way and their quest for a state title is their main driving point. Written by: Mark M. Johnson

New Caney Football Making Traditions
Thi year marks This k the h 30th 30 h year that h C Coachh Brady B d P Pennington i of the New Caney Eagles has been coaching. He began his career at Van High School, transferred to Brenham High School after sixteen years, and then returned to Van as the new head coach after two years in BrenKDP 3HQQLQJWRQ VWD\HG DW 9DQ IRU HLJKW \HDUV JRLQJ ZLQQLQJ ÂżYH GLVWULFW FKDPSLRQVKLSV DQG PDNLQJ D UXQ WR WKH VWDWH TXDUWHUÂżnals, before deciding to make the move to the New Caney Eagles football program as head coach. For four years now Coach Pennington has been building a foundation in the Eagle’s athletic program that he hopes will become a tradition. 6LQFH KLV ÂżUVW \HDU DW 1HZ &DQH\ &RDFK 3HQQLQJWRQ KDV VHHQ WKH QXPEHUV LQ KLV SURJUDP IRU SDUWLFLSDWLRQ LQFUHDVH GUDPDWLFDOO\ )RU H[DPSOH RQO\ IUHVKPHQ VKRZHG XS WR WZR D GD\V WKH ÂżUVW \HDU KH ZDV WKHUH ZKHUHDV QRZ RYHU DUH FRPPLWWHG WR WKH SURJUDP 3HQQLQJWRQ VWDWHV WKDW HYHU \HDU ÂłRXU QXPEHUV KDYH JURZQ VLJQLÂżFDQWO\ DQG LQ SDUW LWÂśV EHFDXVH RXU NLGV DUH RXU ELJJHVW DPEDVVDGRUV ´ The players approach their peers and say, “Hey! You need to come be part of what’s going on out here!â€? The players want to “continue the foundation of building the structure that’s going to hold up [for the Eagle’s program]. What is going to hold up is giving great effort, doing it with a lot of class and a lot of character,â€? stated Pennington. As you can imagine, with fewer than necessary players on the team, for the last few years multiple players have been playing both sides of the ball to attempt to stay in the competition. This tired the team out to a point where they were unable to compete with district powerhouses like Crosby and Summer Creek; however, this year New Caney has “closed the gapâ€? and will only have 1 or 2 players playing both sides. This will be advantageous for the Eagles considering most, if not all of their opponents, do not have players on both sides. A full and rested offense/defense could change the Eagles entire game! Thanks to the realignment earlier this year, the Eagles will not see Summer Creek in competition but will gain Galena Park as a contender. Contributing to New Caney’s hopeful success this year is Aldin Adamek, Jesse Abauta, Joe Dittman, Jose Rangel, Anthony Ponce, Timmy Ware, Marte Allison, David Harvey, Jarmon Burkhalter, Joseph Edwards, and Tristan Garza. Porter Spartans p A Year Of Improvement
There has been a lot of new schools opening in the Houston area over recent years and with new schools come new programs. Porter High School is only in their 5th year of existence having opened up in August of 2010, but the football team is ready to come out of the shadows and make a name for them. Head football coach, Reno Moore, is back to lead the Spartans and talked to us about his expectations and goals for the season. Like every high school football program, the Spartans had a strength and conditioning program this summer. “It was really good. It was probably the most positive summer we’ve had simply because of the senior leadership. They made a point to make sure the younger guys were here every day and on top of that they worked while they were here,” Coach Moore said. UIL only allows 6 weeks to practice the boys over the summer. The coaching staff and coach Moore got together and made the decision to use the last 3 weeks of the summer leading into the school year for practice. They called it “The Big Push.” They made it a point to use the last 3 weeks because they felt it was the most important. This season there is only 13 seniors on the roster. Though, Coach Moore believes that they are quality young men and very trustworthy. “They’re the difference in our football team right now.” Coach Moore stated. There are a total of 6 seniors on the team that are 3 year lettermen and 3 of them started and played quite a bit since their sophomore years. So that leaves them with a young roster which consists of 10 sophomores with 5 of them starting at times on defense and 4 starting on offense consistently. Porter will depend on a few guys to help carry some of the load and lead the team throughout the season. Senior WR Marlon Lewis, a 3 year starter, has the capability of making a great play every time he touches the football. He also handles much of the special team’s returns. Over his tenure he became the all-time leader in total yards for Porter High School football. “He puts up big numbers when he touches the ball,” Coach Moore said. Porter is anchored by 3 senior offensive linemen. Gavin Lukasik is the RT, a big physical force. Christian Sanchez and Louis Hickman play LT and LG. “Those

two have played a lot football beside each other. They almost know what each other is thinking before the other one opens their mouth. They’re almost like brothers,” Coach Moore admitted. Porter and New Caney High School will play in the newly built Texan Drive Stadium this season. After they break in the stadium on September 12, 2014 against each other, it will be their permanent KRPH VWDGLXP 7KH ¿UVW ZRUGV WKDW FDPH WR &RDFK 0RRUH¶V PLQG DERXW WKH QHZ IDFLOLW\ ZHUH ³¿UVW FODVV ´ +H WDONHG YHU\ KLJK RI WKH district for making the stadium as nice as possible for not only the players and coaches but for the community as well. Going into district will be a tough challenge not only with the level of competition but with the high number of teams in the district as well. There are 9 teams (Dayton, Galena Park, Humble, Kingwood Park, Barbers Hill, New Caney, Porter, CE King, and Crosby) in district 21 5-A but only 4 of those teams make it to the playoffs. “That’s just that many more games you have to win,” Coach Moore claimed. The two toughest games may just come at the end of the year against district favorites Crosby and Dayton. Coach Moore believes it’s a good thing as it will give them an opportunity to see where they are at –competitively — at the end of the year. Two years ago the Spartans failed to get a victory. Last season they VWUHVVHG DERXW JHWWLQJ WKDW ¿UVW YLFWRU\ DQG WKH\ GLG VR E\ GHIHDWLQJ Sam Rayburn 28-6. They did one better by winning again the next week 26-19 vs Caney Creek starting the season at 2-0. Improving is the most important aspect for the Spartans and this season they plan on carrying over that and making a “Big Push” in district. Written by Mark M. Johnson
