Founder’s Log: Stardate 2014 I consider myself part of the Kenner generation, a group of fan boys who counted their allowance in multiples of Star Wars figures. Family dinners were eaten in front of Next Generation.

As I grew up, my taste expanded but I never lost my love for stories from Other Worlds (or our own under amazing circumstances). After programming Austin Film Festival for two years and traveling around the country to visit several other fests, both scouting and with my own film, I knew there was a ton of amazing SciFi out there that was never getting the chance to play Austin.

As we put together the slate, my fellow programmers and I tried not to define SciFi too rigidly. We sought films that approached the genre from every aspect – post-apocalyptic, time travel, space travel, aliens, paranormal abilities, technology with unexpected consequences – as well as films about the genre itself. We even have films I would just call Science Films, whose only ‘fiction’ element may just be that they haven’t happened yet. I am very proud of our first film program, each feature a Texas Premiere, each filmmaker brave enough to ask the audience to follow them into unknown territory.
