FEVER

T

HE PARENTAL fear that a doctor will probably encounter most often in the office is that of fever. The textbook definition of fever is any temperature of 100.4°F or higher. It is common for moms and dads to anxiously call the office anytime the thermometer reads 101°F or higher.

The good news is that the vast majority of fevers are not dangerous. Fevers can become dangerous when they reach 107.6°F or higher, but this is rarely, if ever, seen in a pediatric office.

On the other hand, fevers spanning 100.4–106°F are seen several times a day in every pediatric office. Fevers in this range will not hurt the brain. Many moms and dads have heard of a fever triggering seizures, and although this can be alarming to the parent, the good news is that simple febrile seizures (a seizure associated with a fever) are not dangerous, and typically have no lasting effects; this is in contrast to other types of seizures, which can be more concerning.

The good news is that the vast majority of fevers are not dangerous Fevers are a natural and healthy response of the immune system. A solid understanding of what a fever is will help parents not to panic the next time their child gets sick, and may even save them a visit to the doctor.

One of the reasons that parents are fearful of fever is because they fail to realize that a fever is a controlled burn. The body has a feedback loop with the brain to ensure that the fever does not become “too hot.” Parents sometimes become overly vigilant about bringing a fever down and, as a result, do more harm than good by overusing fever-

reducers (and incurring possible side effects).

Even without any intervention (including fever-reducing medications), fevers will stay in a specific range and will not spiral out of control. The fever will eventually break as the infection is defeated, and the body temperature will return to normal.

But, as we have discussed, because fever can make a child uncomfortable, it is perfectly reasonable to make use of fever-reducing medications

a fever is a controlled burn. The body has a feedback loop with the brain to ensure that the fever does notbecome “too hot. and other techniques (such as baths) to help make a child feel better. However, intervention is not necessary to control the fever; the body will do that on its own.

A good motto for using fever-reducing medications is, “Treat the child, not the fever.”

In other words, a child who is playful but has a 103°F fever does not necessarily need any medication.

Conversely, a child who is uncomfortable, but who only has a 101°F fever would benefit from medication (for comfort purposes).

Is it just me or does it seem that almost every child today is being labeled with ADHD/ADD? The criteria used to make the diagnosis fit most of the children in my practice and some of the ones in my home. It concerns me that there are no objective markers commonly used to diagnose ADD; therefore, it becomes completely a subjective diagnosis based upon perceived behavior by practitioners and educators.

Is it just me or does it seem that almost every child today is being labeled with ADHD/ADD? I have often said that labels are for cans and not for people. I dislike the labeling of a child or an adult. It is well documented that if Albert Einstein or Thomas Edison were children today, they would definitely be diagnosed with ADHD and probably prescribed Ritalin.

Edison’s parents were wise enough to pull him out of school when his teachers said that he was stupid and unable to learn.

Most parents do not realize that there are no laboratory tests to make the diagnosis, and it is purely observation. Most parents do not realize that Ritalin and other class 2 narcotic drugs are in the same classification as cocaine and opium. They are highly addictive psychotropic drugs that alter the behavior as well as the child’s perception of the world. I believe that these drugs rob children of their individuality in exchange for hoping that it will force them to obey. Ritalin research studies show that 83% of children on Ritalin had trouble with frequent lying, 60% were still overactive and rebellious, 59% had contact with police, 52% were destructive, 34% threatened to kill their parents, and 15% contemplated suicide. There has to be a better way; thankfully, there is.

The purpose of this article and the upcoming articles over the next couple of publications is to show that behavioral issues involving focus, attention, and hyperactivity can be effectively managed using conservative measures. These measures include nutrition, life style changes, chiropractic, and neuro- feedback. I will explain each of these in more detail, but first let us define the term ADD/ADHD; for the purpose of these articles we will use only the term ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).

ADHD is not limited to children, but adults are also diagnosed as well. The symptoms include brain fog, trouble focusing, poor concentration, memory problems, and problems with behavior and attitude. People with these symptoms have trouble controlling their emotions. Some will experience emotional outburst; some of anger, and some of sadness. The causes of ADHD are many; however, no one disputes that this is a neurologic problem or that the brain is not firing correctly.

Let us get familiar with our brain and how it is supposed to function. Dr. Amen in his book on ADHD identified seven types or classification of ADHD. Each of these involves individual areas of the brain, but for the benefit of this article we will classify them all together as one and discuss the brain as a whole.

The cortex of the brain is divided into lobes so we can more easily

discuss their function. The four main lobes of the brain are the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital. Also important to note is that the brain cells have a frequency of firing, these are called brain waves. These waves are also broken down into four groups based on the speed of the neurons firing. The slow brain waves are delta and theta; they range from 2-7 hertz. Fast brain waves are alpha and beta; they range from 8-30 or more hertz.

In a normally functioning brain it is important that each area of the brain be balanced with the right type of brain waves. If this does not happen, a person will have trouble paying attention, be easily distracted, be impulsive, and even daydream. Other types of misfiring of the brain will cause over focus and learning problems.

If a particular brain wave is deficient, then low energy or sadness may be experienced. If there is an over firing of a brain wave, then nervousness, headaches or anxiety may be experienced. No drug has ever been created or designed to balance these brain waves and if this is your problem drugs will not work long- term. In order to find out if you have normal functioning brain wave activity, a QEEG test is necessary. A QEEG differs from a regular EEG in that it puts a numeric value to the brain wave so it can be measured and compared to a normally functioning brain. In our office we recommend a QEEG for anyone that has signs or symptoms similar to those we have discussed involving ADHD. It is also recommended for those that suffer with depression, anxiety, insomnia, OCD or traumatic brain injury.

Beginning to understand the cause of the problem is the first step to having an effective treatment to correct it. In the next article I will go in more detail about neuro- feedback and how it allows the brain to retrain itself. I will also discuss the roles of nutrition and healthy nerve stimulation to the brain from the body through chiropractic care and brain- based therapy. Jesus, please send snow so we can go sledding? ”One of the things I loved to do growing up in Canada was go snow sledding. That always seems to meet with mixed reviews in Texas. Texan’s for the most part prefer the heat, but you adapt to your surroundings, and when you’ve only got cold you can either be miserable or learn to play in the cold. As kids we would find a nearby snow covered hill and spend hours going up and down with our sleds. Afterwards you could count on a warm cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows to put the heat back into your system.

I miss it during the snowless Texas winters and with a daughter growing up those are experiences I’d love for us to share together if even for a day.

it was so much snow fall we needed to delay our trip home for another day to allow the storm to pass So last thanksgiving we took the opportunity to visit my brother and his family in Colorado. Neither of our vehicles are reliable enough to make a road trip like that so we rented an suv, loaded up and headed to the mountains. On the way, it was fun listening to Zoey talking about all the things she wanted to do with her cousins. It was a long list, they have a blast together.

Included on the list was snow sledding. There wasn’t enough snow on the ground in Colorado for sledding, so we prayed and asked Jesus if we could have some snow to go sledding before we had to come home.

While we were there we made many great memories together. went to the top of mountains on cable cars, visited the town where the legendary gunfighter Doc Holiday is buried, went ice skating & swimming, ate pizza, it was a great thanksgiving together. But we had not been able to find a hill to go snow sledding on and our trip was coming to an end.

We were there just before ski season had opened for the ski resorts on lower altitudes, so there was still not enough snow.

We arrived to find two deer playing on the road and snow everywhere, it was peaceful.

As we came back down from the mountains on the last day of our adventure together it looked like snow sledding wasn’t going to be possible. We had a good attitude about it, we had had such a great time. But as we were coming down the mountain at night a snow storm came in, it was so much snow fall we needed to delay our trip home for another day to allow the storm to pass. There was one snag. Our windshield washer fluid wasn’t working properly. We thought the fluid line had frozen because in Houston where we picked up the car you don’t really need washer fluid rated to - 30°F, so we use water. But at that temperature water freezes and washer fluid lines can break. It becomes a bit treacherous when you are trying to come down a mountain pass in a snow storm with semi- trucks driving next to you spraying slush & dirt onto your windshield. Thankfully we made it back safely to my brothers home in the city they live. But we decided to let the storm pass before we made the trip back to Humble. Also hoping the fluid line would thaw. I am a pastor and we were really hoping to make it back to Humble for our Sunday service. Now with the friday delay we would be left trying to make it back to Humble in 1 day. A long shot.

We set out Saturday morning and it wasn’t

even an hour before we realized the road conditions combined with the failed windshield system were not a wise combination. We decided to stop at the next major town and see if they could repair the fluid line.

They said it was the motor & didn’t have the parts. So we then chose to return the car to the rental company, hoping for a quick change of vehicle that would allow us to get back on the road and press on. The rental company wasn’t expecting us & had no car prepared.

They were kind enough to get us in a similar vehicle but it took longer than we hoped. By now getting to Humble for Sunday was out of the question. So I arranged for my father in law to take the service, and rather than rush back home, we decided to find a place to go snow sledding. We had no recommendations, no destination, we just turned off the main road and went looking for the perfect hill to sled on, there was snow everywhere.

“Daddy, Daddy, pull me up again!”

The first town we came to we stopped at the local dollar store and picked up the mandatory red plastic sled. Then we stopped by a nearby coffee shop, hoping to grab a cup of coffee. They were closed, the two ladies who worked there insisted that we continue another 15 minutes along the road to their favorite bakery in the area. We were sold. It was amazing. We arrived to find two deer playing on the road and snow everywhere, it was peaceful. The food at the bakery was made fresh, produce taken directly from their farm which was also in the town. As we finished our meal and coffee. We asked if they could recommend anywhere to snow sled. Just around the corner on the outskirts of the town, there was a sledding hill. So off we went and for the next two or so hours Zoey and I played on the hill, me pulling her up and her sledding down. Mommy sat warm and snuggly watching in the car. She laughed and laughed and didn’t want to leave.

“Daddy, Daddy, pull me up again!”, she would insist.

With the exception of two other young boys the hill was basically ours. When it was finally time to get back on the road, I was exhausted.

I guess there are a lot of lessons to be learned in this story. Make sure you have the correct windshield fluid. If you want to go sledding in Colorado go when there is snow. Sure I get it, but for me this was about looking for those ways & opportunities, where we might be able to pass along to the next generation things that were valuable to us. Not only the core values and virtues that define who we are as individuals, families and a nation, but also those things that made us laugh & cry and provide rich emotional context to the lives we live. The next generation needs this.

Kabul or Cabo

I am reminded of a young girl named Sara, who was all of twenty three years old when I met her in Texas some years ago. Sara attended a talk given by two American missionary women who had been held captive by the Taliban after the US invasion of Afghanistan. Sara had been “called” then and there. She was inspired to drop what she was doing, become a missionary and go serve the Lord in Kabul, Afghanistan.

I was as supportive and encouraging as I could be to her but privately, I thought she was crazy. Afghanistan? Taliban? The “rights” of women maybe included getting stoned angry men if you lowered the veil on your burka to take a drink from a water fountain. The idea made my skin crawl! I thought of how I might feel if one of my daughters told me of this calling.

I mentioned this to a friend from church, Wally, who runs a print shop. “Kabul?” he asked with a shocked tone and unbelieving stare. I thought his eyes were going to pop out of his head. “She said she’s moving to Kabul? They just blew the crap out of that place! Those people hate us, especially women!” Wally’s eyes darted blankly around in no particular direction for a few long, pensive moments. “Man, I think if I was her I’d be on my knees asking, “Lord is it Kabul or Cabo?”

I don’t know whether or not Sara actually went to Afghanistan, but it was clear she felt called to the people and problems there. Clear passion was present. It didn’t matter what anyone else thought. I hope God doesn’t call my daughters to some place like that, but you never know.

Listen to the Lord, follow the passion He gives you and therein lies the calling.

10 Steps to Set Your Kids Up with a Healthy Online/Offline Balance Talking with parents about sexuality and online safety, it seems as if everyone just wants to know what button to push or what software to buy to ensure their child never sees porn, never talks to strangers online, and never posts provocative pictures. So let me say this from the get-go: There is nothing you or any other parent can do to guarantee your child will never do anything potentially dangerous online. There are, however, steps parents can take to drastically reduce the probability that a child will develop problematic internet behaviors.

In general, your goal should be to first focus on becoming a reduced-tech family. Putting more emphasis on the real world and less emphasis on the digital realm can help kids and teens put their value and energy into their real lives. It will lead to healthy use of the web—as a tool to connect with others and to learn about the world on an as-needed basis—instead of constantly trolling the cyber-sphere searching for the next thrill.

Here are 10 steps to get you and your family establish rules and practices for online safety: Get to know the technology, apps, and websites: So many parents I speak with don’t know how to work apps, navigate a laptop, or turn on the Wii. Search YouTube for how-to videos and spend some time getting comfortable with the technology your child is using. You can also check out this App Guide for Parents, to fill you in on all the latest apps and how they work. Learn all about teens’ use of social media sites and other online behaviors. Hint: Facebook is old news.

Use existing privacy settings: Check the privacy and parental settings on all of your devices— desktop computers, laptops, phones, tablets, game consoles—and use them. Super savvy teens can bypass these if they work hard enough, but younger kids can’t. And even older kids may be deterred or at least slowed down by them.

Filter and monitor: Parents will tell me that they talked to their child about the internet, so they don’t need to install monitoring software. Wrong! No matter how much you trust your child, it is essential to install software that can monitor tablets and smart phones (examples include this one and this one). Of course, there are ways for your child to get around these, which is why you need to continually check the devices and re-install the software as needed.

Remember to be honest about your monitoring.

Secretly recording a kid’s internet usage will likely do more harm to the relationship than good for the child.

Talk to your kids about digital citizenship: It’s important for your kids to know that everything online is permanent. Everyone can see your “likes” and “favorites” as well as your comments on other photos, not to mention your own photos and videos.

This permanency makes it important to consider your online reputation. Teens can start building a positive reputation online using LinkedIn and keeping

all other social media profiles completely private.

For example, most people keep their Twitter and Instagram profiles public and college admission committees will search applicants online and see those profiles. Encourage teens not to post sexy or wild photos of themselves, or at least not as a profile pic.

Limit technology use: Try to limit tech and screen time by providing windows of time for when it is allowed and when it is not. You can also try a tech curfew, such as no internet after 7 or 8 p.m. Some families have instituted rules banning tablet or smartphone usage from 5-7 p.m., after which they allow a 30-minute window for responding to emails, messages, and texts, before having all devices turned off again at 7:30. There is also software which tracks time spent on Netflix, Facebook and games as well as applications like Microsoft Word and Excel, which is another way to monitor time spent on a computer doing recreational activities vs. homework activities. There is a new trend called “vamping,” where teens stay up all night on social media while their parents think they’re asleep. If this is the case in your home, you might have to disable the wireless router at night.

Get step-by-step help setting limits in your home: The Total Transformation Keep internet devices in public places: It’s easy to sneak a peek at porn when at a friend’s house or even in your own living room. However, it is hard to watch hours of porn every day or to chat with a pedophile online if the only available devices are in the living room or den. So it’s a good idea to forbid laptops, tablets, or smartphones in bedrooms or bathrooms.

They are not private devices, so they do not belong in private rooms. Here’s the catch: You should be role-modeling this behavior. Try to have a “home” for all your devices, such as a basket or cabinet (and consider locking them away if need be). This sends the message that these devices don’t belong to your child—they belong to you, the parent, and you are allowing your child to use the device, as long as it’s used responsibly.

Set rules with consequences. Digital behavior should be thought of as an extension of the self or a representation of the self. If you wouldn’t do something in person, “in real life,” you probably shouldn’t be doing it online. Little kids understand this better than big kids who can think more abstractly and can rationalize their bad behavior online. One way to get your children to think about their online behavior is to have them sign a contract agreeing to the digital-behavior rules you set and outlining consequences if the agreement is broken.

Gradually build autonomy: Your goal as a parent is to build autonomy within your child in almost every area: finances, emotions, social bonds, chores, and so much more. You want your child to be able to take care of himself or herself. The same is true for his or her cyber-self. Trying to block and/or monitor everything or eliminate technology completely isn’t going to help your children regulate their digital

Staying Positive When you are starting a healthy diet, beginning an exercise program, stopping an unhealthy habit or working on a relationship, one of the main elements for success is staying positive.

The power of remaining positive, whatever the situation, can never be underestimated. We are all here for a limited period of time, is it worth it to spend any of that time in a depressed, negative mood?

The true test of an individual to remain positive is when challenges become difficult. Remaining positive keeps one’s mind in the right state of balance and often opens resolutions to the problems at hand.

Negativity is contagious and it spreads to anyone you interact with. Eliminating negativity, or rather, being positive is a mindset that can be found at any moment, and turned into a habit. So, what are some ideas to help you shift your mindset to remain positive?

You cannot be both angry and grateful at the same time Be conscious of your thoughts. Especially, when life just isn’t going your way. The moment you see that you are diving into frustration, agony, sorrow and low self-esteem – shift your thoughts, by thinking about something completely unrelated.

This breaks the pattern of self-pity. What makes us different from other mammals is our ability to control our thoughts and think for ourselves.

There is a lesson to be learned from every situation. You may have made a mistake, but now you can accept it and continue, knowing that you will make a different decision in the future.

Understand this and be appreciative for the experience.

Self-affirmations (list of positive statements about yourself) are another simple and powerful tool to train your subconscious to see yourself in a positive light. This is important, as many of us can be hard on ourselves.

Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center, a premier Harris County Precinct 4 nature preserve of over 300 acres, is open daily to visitors, free of charge. The park features a variety of plant and wildlife species, white sand beaches along Spring Creek, swamps and sloughs with century-old cypress trees, and a pristine floodplain hardwood and pine forest. All features are accessible by over six miles of all-weather, wheelchair-friendly pedestrian trails and several unpaved primitive trails.

The Tadpoles Club, a regularly scheduled program for toddlers, meets each Wednesday of rotating months during the school year.

Fishing in Jones Park is permitted on the banks of Spring Creek only, and compliance with state fishing laws is enforced by game wardens. Late winter and early spring are successful times for catching white bass and crappie; catfish can be caught year-round.

“Buggin’ Out” 2016 Summer Nature Camp, held during summer break each year, is a four-day (Tuesday through Friday) nature program for children between the ages of 5 and 12. The games, activities, and crafts are suited for age brackets of 5 and 6, 7 through 9, and 10 through 12. Fourday sessions focus on each age bracket, and participants must be able to attend the full week of activities.

The 10- through 12-year-old activities include Junior Canoe Training and a field trip. Space is limited in each bracket, and registration for Harris County residents begins the first Saturday in May at 8 a.m. A valid parent’s identification and proof of the child’s birth date is required at the time of registration.

There’s nothing as welcoming as a family -run restaurant where the owners are there to greet you every time you step in the door. That’s what you can expect to find at familyowned Italiano’s in Humble.

For the last twelve years, owners Al and Susie have been on hand every day, working hard to ensure that their customers receive quality, fresh, and affordable Italian food, with excellent service in a comfortable atmosphere.

“Our motto is love at first bite”, Al explains. “I think people come here because they know they’re going to have a great meal every time. It’s a place where you can come for a date or with your family and enjoy great food.”

Maria Rios, a regular at the restaurant, says that there’s no place in Humble like Italiano’s. “It’s warm and friendly. I love the bread! The salads are amazing, and I always order the chicken fettuccine alfredo. When my family comes to visit me from Latin America, this is the first place that I take them.”

For lunch, favorite dishes like home-made lasagna and chicken marsala are generously portioned, yet still ring in at under $7. Fantastic New York Style pizzas and calzones are also available for diners who are craving a slice of some of the best pizza in the Humble area. Every meal is served with a complimentary serving of Italiano’s signature house-made bread knots, round bread balls that are crispy, yet chewy, coated in butter and sprinkled with parmesan. They are absolutely delicious.

“People definitely come here for the bread,” Al says proudly. “We are famous for our bread knots.”

There are nightly dinner specials like their signature Osso Bucco, a slow braised veal shank cooked for hours in a special blend of spices and herbs until it’s ready to fall off the bone. Salmon and steak specials are also regularly available, but there are plenty of classic Italian choices to please any member of the family . Lobster ravioli, shrimp scampi, veal scalloppini, linguini pescatore, and chicken penne ala vodka are just some of the many savory dishes available at dinner.

Italiano’s also offers a business catering program, as well as a large banquet hall for parties of up to 150.

Nancy Sez Goodbyes and change are inevitable facts of life. We change schools, families move, couples divorce and remarry. We change our place of worship and our hairdressers and we say goodbye to our friends and our support systems. Our children move, sometimes close and sometimes far away. Our lives are a series of farewells.

This is a goodbye for me as I write my last column for the Whole Kid and Kaboodle. It has been a privilege to be a part of this publication and I have enjoyed answering your questions and offering advice.

I feel truly blessed to have spent 24 years in this community and I can say without a doubt that nothing compares with southern hospitality. From the first day I drove my daughter to school when the crossing guard opened her door and said to me in a precious drawl, “Have a nice day, Ma’am”, I knew I was going to like it here. In the hectic weeks of settling in, I left a package at Randalls. When I called to inquire about it, the clerk delivered it to my house! We arrived here in “94, the year of the big flood. My husband was away on business when it hit. The Hi Neighbor ladies I had recently met checked in on me daily and took me out to eat; all part of living in the south. And truly one of my favorite courtesies here is that men from 8-84 still go out of their way to open a door for a lady.

The end of this journey marks a new one for me as goodbyes often do. My husband and I will be moving back to hometown of Benicia California. I will continue counseling on a part time basis and add in life coaching via phone and internet. If you would like to follow my writing, I have a blog and web page that will begin this spring. Look for me at NowthatIknoweverything.com I am not one for farewell fanfare. I like the word aloha which is used both as a hello and goodbye greeting. The true meaning of aloha is that of love, peace, and compassion; sincerity of the heart so that it overflows with the ability to influence others around you with your spirit. I hope that in some small way I have been able to do this.
