SENIOR CONFIDENTIAL: TATUM SENIOR CENTER RANKED #1 AMONG LEA COUNTY SENIOR CENTERS FOR PROVIDING TRANSPORTATION TO THEIR SENIOR MEMBERS TO GO WITHIN A 100 MILE RADIUS FOR APPOINTMENTS Many weeks, a Tatum Senior van has run as many as three times a week as the need exists for seniors who need to go to Lubbock or outlying areas for appointments.

Tatum also provides transportation for runs to other types of offerings to help seniors be where they need or want to go in the area. This service is for Tatum Senior Center Members, and any Tatum member needing a ride must call in advance.

CITY HEARING ON SENIOR NEEDS - TRANSPORTATION BIG NEED: SENIORS WANT TRANSPORTATION TO LUBBOCK AND OUTLYING AREAS LIKE TATUM HAS With so many seniors utilizing specialists, the need, they say, for transportation out of Lea Communities would be welcomed with open arms and support.

EUNICE TO HAVE SENIOR TRANSPORTATION BUS Eunice Senior Center Director Shannon Cummins reported that the Eunice Clinic is in the process of purchasing a bus to be used for senior transportation.

HOBBS SENIOR CENTER If you are a member of Hobbs Senior Center, transportation is provided free of charge to senior center members. The Senior Center bus will take you within about 8 miles of the center to doctor’s appointments in town, beauty shop appointments, grocery store, Walmart, other locations as possible, and daily Monday through Friday pick up is available to the luncheon and back home. Call in advance to schedule a ride.

LOVINGTON SENIOR CENTER Members of Lovington Senior Center have transportation through the center within the community about an 8 mile radius to get to appointments, shopping, and other venues.

May is Older American’s Month - Senior Citizen’s Month More than 45 Million Senior Citizens live in the U.S.; New Mexico is home to more than 2 million people.

Of these, more than 730,000 (about 37 percent) are over age 50. More than 434,000 (nearly 22 percent) are over age 60; more than 200,000 (about 10 percent) are over age 70; and more than 80,000 (approximately 4 percent) are age 80 or older.

U.S. Presidents ask communities - Senior Centers - Schools - Businesses Individuals across America to pay tribute this month to Senior Citizens When Older American’s Month was established in 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday. Today there are 45 million! About a third of older Americans lived in poverty and there were few programs to meet their needs. A meeting in April 1963 between President John F. Kennedy and members of the National Council of Senior Citizens led to designating May as “Senior Citizens Month,” the prelude to “Older American’s Month.”

Historically, Older American’s Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country, in particular those who defended our country. Every President since Kennedy has issued a formal proclamation during or before the month of May asking that the entire nation pay tribute in some way to older persons in their communities.

GOOD LIFE HOBBS AND LOVINGTON THERAPY PONY HELPS SENIOR CITIZENS Meet Ruby, a certified therapy pony that is owned by Ashley Henry.

Watching the residents interact with the pony is a delightful experience. There are hugs and kisses for the pony, a pony that thinks she is a lap dog trying to get up on their laps, Good Life’s Sharla said. Ruby went through extensive training and testing to be certified as a therapy pony, and passed all tests with flying colors. Residents brush her, talk to her, and pet her with a deep love and understanding as they connect with her on another level. The pony will make numerous and regular visits to both facilities as residents look forward to the visit each time.

Proper Medication Disposal For Hospice Patients

There is no magazine just for senior citizens in the geographic area that focuses on needs or challenges that directly impact our senior citizens. Through listening to elders and family members, Seniors Standing Strong, a nonprofit organization realized that there is much work to be done to educate seniors, relatives, friends, and caregivers so all receive the respect, dignity, and equality they richly deserve.

We share some of the comments made by seniors and their families in the immediate area, not to cast a negative light on those who fail seniors, but to shine a light on how seniors can be treated better.

COMMENTS FROM THIS AREA Funeral Service Fee At A Church Questioned A concerned family member writes, “A family member passed away in Hobbs recently. His elderly widow was planning his funeral service at a church where they were members. It’s not uncommon to tip a preacher $100 or so for his or her time to provide the funeral service, but I have learned that the church suggested to the widow that she make a large donation to the church to have the service there. This widow paid thousands of dollars to the church at the urging of the church so she could have his funeral service there. This is not right.”

SENIORS SAY: Social Security - Seniors Spending Not Going Down While Benefits Are Not Going Up “We as seniors are iscouraged that we did not receive a cost of living raise from Social Security this year because they say cost of living is lower.

Doesn’t the government understand that seniors have to hire many to help them in their homes as needs only increase for older people, so the cost of living for services doesn’t take a break.”

“I am a senior citizen, and wondered when a person passes at home and is on Hospice what happens to the medications the patient is receiving? Isn’t the medication supposed to be destroyed on the spot?” Answer: In Hobbs, Senior Confidential is told, all medications must be seized and destroyed following a death of a person receiving Hospice. When police are on the scene, they often serve as a witness to the destruction, our source says, or a Hospice nurse is required to dispose of the medications immediately. A nurse said, the laws/requirements are city specific.

Hobbs requires destruction of medication in this type of instance, but Lovington does not, a Hospice nurse said.

“My mother in her late 60’s is in a care facility locally. Another resident was screaming for help so my mother rushed to check on her.

A shift worker ran into the room and told my mother she didn’t know what to do. My mother told the facility worker who was taking care of the lady to call 911. Are people working in our long-term care facilities, especially at night not trained in what to do if a resident has an emergency?”

Hobbs Woman Questions: No Nurse Making Rounds?

“My mother-in-law needed help in a hospital recently and even after asking, we waited over an hour for a nurse to come check on her in her room. The nurse said she would go get a blood pressure machine, but said it didn’t work. She said she would be back with another one, but didn’t return. I had to go find someone twice to get any help for her that night. How do families and patients deal with that added stress when it is the last thing you need?”

WHAT CAUSES CAREGIVERS TO ABUSE SENIORS?

Sure, you hear a lot about nursing home mistreatment of senior citizens, but much more of that mistreatment happens in their own family homes. There are adult children of senior citizens agreeing to “take care” of their parents so they can live at home while neglecting them behind closed doors, shutting them off into rooms so they don’t interfere with daily life, and taunting them with abusive treatment. A bad example is set for the young children in the home. That example shows children that it is ok to bully their parents or grandparents. Verbal/psychological abuse is rampant. Who says ugly things to their parent? Many do. The senior, in fact is not exactly happy that they need help, and already feels like they are a burdon, so when their family caregiver kicks them down verbally every time they say something, the impact on self esteem leaves lasting damage. Statistics show that a senior who is abused in any way including verbal/psychological abuse faces a risk factor increase of 300% for an earlier death. Secretly, the adult child perhaps just looks forward to the Social Security check and places it in their own bank account while diverting the parent’s life savings, and relishing the power and control over the parent.

The need to have power over another person can be an indicator of a present or future abuser.

IS SOMEONE IN YOUR HOME MISTREATING A SENIOR THERE? PUT THEM ON NOTICE THAT VERBAL OR PHYSICAL ABUSE IS AGAINST THE LAW Data indicate that 1 in 3 nursing homes abuse seniors, but this is actually a small impact against seniors considering that the lion share of abuse against seniors actually happens in their own homes.

Make no mistake, there are countless senior citizens who have lost a spouse and moved in with their kids. They are simply aging and may be moving a bit slower than in years earlier. They are grieving and lonely. Often, they say, their kids make them feel unwanted.

Abuse can take many forms, including physical or sexual abuse, psychological abuse (such as name-calling or making threats), exploitation (misuse or theft of an elder’s money or property) and simple neglect. In a national study, known perpetrators of abuse and neglect were family members in 90 percent of cases, and two-thirds were adult children or spouses.

According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, elder abuse has risen sharply over the past decade and a half, and less than one in 10 cases of abuse are actually reported to authorities. Neglect is the most common form of abuse, comprising roughly half of all cases, followed by physical abuse (15 to 20%), emotional abuse (15%), and property destruction, theft, or financial exploitation (10%).

The most likely abusers are adult children and spouses. Adjusting for the greater number of elderly women, men and women are both abused in equal proportion.

Among caregivers, significant risk factors for elder abuse are: Inability to cope with stress (lack of resilience) Depression, which is common among caregivers Lack of support from other potential caregivers The caregiver’s perception that taking care of the elder is burdensome and without psychological reward Substance abuse leading to stealing the senior’s pain medications The need for money can often motivate a caregiver to find ways to defraud a senior The caregiver figures the senior needs them, will bond with them, and won’t turn them in The caregiver threatens to send a senior to a nursing home so the senior will feel like what is happening is the lessor of two evils

CALL THE POLICE! REPORT CAREGIVERS WHO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOU OR NEGLECT YOU Recently a Hobbs family filed a police report against a caregiver whom they say allegedly defrauded their 95 year old dad out of $25,000 while in the duty of providing care in his home.

Just because a caregiver tells you they have 30 years of experience and appear to be the Mary Poppins of senior care, your responsibility is to be vigilant in checking them out. You and your family are bringing this person into your home with full access to what you own, your life, and in some instances, you may be letting a person in who could drug you without your knowledge in order to get what they want from you.

One caregiver makes it clear that she only wants to work for people with money. Red Flag? You bet. So in some cases there are predator caregivers targeting the wealthier families in town who believe they are doing a good thing -- affording in-home care for a family member with private pay to allow a senior to live at home.

Another caregiver lied repeatedly to a Albuquerque based daughter of a Hobbs woman. The caregiver assured the daughter daily that her mom was doing great! When the daughter grew suspicious and drove to Hobbs, she found that her mother had not been bathed in seven weeks, was disheveled, and was being fed TV dinners rather than healthy variety of foods. Her mom had lost a substantial amount of weight with this caregiver.

THERE ARE MANY EXCEPTIONAL CAREGIVERS AND NURSES BUT THERE ARE ALSO THOSE WHO PREY ON YOU AND YOUR KINDNESS. THE BAD ONES CAN ONLY BE STOPPED IF YOU REPORT THEM TO POLICE SENIORS AND FAMILY MEMBERS WHO DO NOT REPORT BAD CAREGIVERS ARE ALLOWING BAD CAREGIVERS TO MOVE ON TO SOMEONE ELSE’S HOME OR HOSPITAL ROOM

Cover Story Ron and Jan Black It was 1966 when Ron Black was visiting his parents in Portales and read an article about a college that was slated to open in Hobbs. He wanted to have a look for himself so he drove to Hobbs. While Ron walked the NMJC campus, he ran into H.C. Pennell and John Shepherd and by the end of the day, he was offered a job as a teacher. A short while later when he dropped by the NMJC office which was on Taylor at that time. He told them he needed to fill out some paperwork, so they sent him to Counselor, John Malone. As Ron began to fill out the paperwork, he had a chuckle because what was in front of him was paperwork for a student enrolling in classes. He realized that, and said, “no, I’m a teacher.” All in all, the employment paperwork was finished and Ron Black remains one of the original staff members of NMJC to date. He has served on the NMJC Board since 2005.

He and Jan have a “love at first sight” story. She was a cheerleader in Dora and in 1963 they tied the knot and have been married for more than 50 years. The couple has three children, Kevin, Karla, and Shannon. Jan was a stay at home mom, and after that, she decided to pursue her desire to go to college. She was a shining star in the classroom and an inspiration to all in her path. “She is smart,” Ron said. She graduated with her Bachelor’s Degree (Summa Cum Laude) and went on to complete her Master’s Degree with the same drive and determination. In the 80’s, Jan began her teaching dream. She taught at Highland Junior High and Hobbs High School before becoming a professor at University of the Southwest. Thousands of students were the benefactor of her knowledge and commitment to making learning fun. Her passion for bringing more to the plate for students was heightened when she sought to have students compete through a Texaco Star Challenge Contest. She put together a team that went on to win State, regionals in Houston, and on to the New York City Finals to the championship. Her team won 2nd place and walked away with $25,000.00 that went into a Hobbs scholarship fund.

In 1994, Jan almost died, and after four months in the hospital, there was little hope early on. It was encephalitis that traveled to the brain caused by early childhood chickenpox virus, Ron said. Miracles do happen though, and over twenty years since that sudden turnabout in their lives, Jan and Ron have overcome many obstacles caused by the residual effects of disease. She has short term memory loss, but “is a very smart person,” Ron said. She has a strong long term memory for most everything including reciting bible verses she learned in her pre-encephilitis years, how to play the piano and memories of her teaching years. “We have weathered the storms together!” Ron said.

In 2010, Ron won his run for a Lea County Commission Seat and takes his roles very seriously as Lea County Commission Chairman and Board Member at NMJC. He has a great interest in economic development including his involvement with a muffler for non vehicular uses that could be used in the oilfield to make the running of oilfield equipment a quiet situation that would also allow companies to operate throughout the night instead of shutting down because of the equipment noise, especially in close proximity to communities through nighttime hours. The muffler project is being done by New Horizons Foundation of which Ron is the chairman.

Ron is a veteran who served 8 years in the National Guard. He loves to golf. He has prostate cancer and is, as always, sporting a good attitude and the expectation of a thumbs up outcome which is a great inspiration to others.

Ron is a deacon and teaches Sunday school at Taylor Memorial Baptist Church, and this year he received the Outstanding Alumni Award at Eastern New Mexico University. Kudos to this exceptional couple for giving so much for so many!

A local senior citizen warns that she called the gas company thinking she might have a leak. The gas company, she said, told her it was free for them to check it out. Instead, they came out, put a lock on her gas meter (during cold weather) and told her she would have to hire a plumber to check it. There was no leak, she was just being careful, and her bill from the plumbing company was over $170.00. She said she wants seniors to be aware expecilly when so many live on a fixed income and a “free” check could become a bit hit to their budgets.

USDA RECIPES FOR SENIOR CITIZENS APPLE AND CHICKEN SALAD A deliciously balanced blend of crisp Cameo apples, celery, raisins, chicken breast and Greek yogurt-based dressing, served over a bed of lettuce.

Add to Shopping List Ingredients 2 red apples (such as Cameo Apples) 2 celery stalks (diced) 2 chicken breasts (skinless, cooked, diced, about 2 cups) 1/4 cup plain non-fat greek yogurt 1/2 cup raisins 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper 16 lettuce leaves (Bibb, Romaine, green or red leaf) Directions Cut apples in quarters; remove core and chop.

In a medium size bowl, mix all ingredients, except lettuce.

To serve, arrange lettuce on serving plates top with apple and chicken salad. of diced ham on top of peas.

FDA Warnings DANGER OF RISK OF DEATH IN ELDERLY SENIORS WITH DEMENTIA RISPERDAL - HALDOL FDA; Risperdal carries a black-box warning to indicate the increased risk of death in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis. This drug should not be taken by these patients.

Risperdal is an FDA-approved prescription medication for the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and autism spectrum disorders. The drug, also known as risperidone, is an atypical antipsychotic medication that is also routinely prescribed for many other conditions. These secondary uses, known as off-label uses, mean the drug was not approved by the FDA for those conditions.

Among the more common off-label uses of Risperdal is treatment of psychosis, aggression, agitation and behavioral disorders in dementia patients. Serious health risks associated with use in elderly dementia patients prompted the FDA to require Janssen Pharmaceuticals to add a black-box warning to Risperdal labeling.

The use of Risperdal by dementia patients led the FDA to require drugmaker Janssen-Cilag, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, to market the drug with a black box warning – the strictest warning possible.

A black-box warning is warning information that appears on the label of a prescription medication to alert patients, caregivers and health care providers of important safety concerns associated with that medication. It is called a black-box warning because its text is surrounded by a black border.

Black-box warnings are the strictest warning that can be carried by a drug, and their appearance on drug packaging indicates that the FDA has determined that use of the drug can lead to serious side effects or death.

Senior Citizens Be Alert! Make it clear about what medicines you want to take. It is your constitutional right to say no to any medication you believe might harm you or create unwanted effects. No person has a right to make you take a pill you do not want, or to take another avenue to induce that medication into your system against your wishes Some have said, in many ways, taking out a bazooka to kill a mouse is a bit like being prescribed high powered drugs and excessive dosing with multiple medications for senior citizens.

The question, “would you like a little something to help you sleep?” may mean you get a sedative instead that patients say, “knock us out for a day when what we normally take at home works just fine.” Many have asked if they can take their own sleep aids with them when they are at a medical care facility so they don’t have to endure the unwelcome side effects of what they might be given and be subjected to medications that often make them more vulnerable.

Pfizer; The effects of aging cause older adults’ bodies to process and respond to medicines differently than those of younger people. Age-related changes in the liver, kidneys, central nervous system, and heart are among the contributing factors causing elderly people to be more vulnerable to overdose and side effects.

Sometimes, a doctor adds a new medicine to treat a symptom that may result, not from a medical condition, but from the side effects of another medicine. This problem, called “prescription cascading,” is especially likely if a patient takes several different medicines or goes to several different health care professionals or clinics for care. If you take more than one kind of medicine, know the side effects that each one can cause, and make sure all your health care providers know what you are taking.

Ask your doctor if you can stop, reduce the dose, or change any of your current medications instead of adding another medicine to the mix. ___________ 3À]HU
