The Perennial Garden Society proudly presents the
2017 Southlake Garden Tour The Perennial Garden Society was created to help educate and inform members, as well as the community, about the use of Perennials and native sustainable plants in our local gardens. We focus on Best Practices for maintaining and improving landscapes: we encourage the use of organic materials, the correct use of natural pesticides and are mindful of water conservation. We are a non profit organization and use our proceeds to offer educational opportunities to the community at large. One of the ways we achieve this is by presenting the Garden Tour on a biennial basis showcasing a variety of garden styles along with providing education from local garden experts. Each home is also staffed with Master Gardeners, a treasure trove of helpful insights are at your disposal during the tour. Our topics offered this year will cover “Attracting Birds to your Landscape”, “A Pond in your Landscape and how to maintain your Pond”, “Mosquito Control”, “The Best plants for North Texas Gardens” and always an eye catcher “Colorful Potted Plants that create that garden WOW”. We thank our Sponsors this year for their generous support and the enduring labor of love from our own members who graciously assist with every aspect of this tour to ensure it’s success. Enjoy this year’s tour, Co Chairs Susan Schleppegrell and Carol Dowd

Fritchie Garden
Fritchie Garden 218 Westwood Dr. Blessed with an Acre Susan and Pat Fritchie's garden was created to take advantage of the sunscape as well as the shady areas under the giant native post oaks. Blessed with an acre of land, Susan designed specific gardens in different areas to utilize the different micro climates. “Sun-tracking and water measuring are huge elements to successful gardening, she notes. Plant life that looks dead above ground because it has had too much water or not enough sun, may still have good roots. The simple answer is to move the plant and try another location. Susan's additional gardening advice is to have your soil tested before you place plant life there and consider amending your soil with a good organic program. It is important to use as many drought tolerant plants as possible in your Texas landscape. Your garden will have beautiful blooms in July and August and be happy despite the Texas heat.
Pat and Susan both enjoy working in the landscape and have removed 1/3 of an acre of grass and laid about 20 tons of flagstone. However, the Fritchie Garden is not all work, there are plenty of relaxation and seating areas around the pool and the beautiful custom laid bricks in circular patterns that make up their hand built fire pit. The sound of bubbling fountains or perhaps the tones of a large wind chime hung high up in the trees makes one want to kick off your shoes and rest a spell in the comfy chairs. As you look around, there is tremendous diversity of plant life in this garden, all carefully placed and mulched.
Wander your way through the rose garden and enjoy the fragrances. Look for the interesting and colorful bird houses. See if you can find Harry Lauder's Walking Stick Tree. Most of all, enjoy a garden that has everything from fruit trees to ferns, and is cherished and well loved by its owners.

Miranda Garden 1206 Wyndham Hill Ln. Lakeside Resort Life One of the primary reasons Andrea & Jorge purchased this property was due to the lush landscape and multiple outdoor living spaces they could enjoy. As you look beyond the fence line you will see a lovely lake and foot trails that gives this beautiful acreage the illusion of being a forest preserve. The garden designer of this sloping terrain incorporated a series of terraced sections showcasing a variety of outdoor living spaces that includes golf. There is a brick wall above the kitchen patio and side area of the pool covered with vines that change from a vibrant green in Spring to a brilliant red-orange color in Fall. The waterfall of the infinity style pool cascades down to the next entertainment area. The dual staircase on either side of the pool leads you to the outdoor fireplace lounging area. Please notice the container gardens scattered throughout the property. These containers bring seasonal color to the yard by utilizing a wide variety of perennials and annuals. If you enjoy water features, then you will love this garden. The rock creek beds start at the top level on both sides of the back yard, flow to the middle of the yard forming the first of three ponds, and end at the lower level of the property by the fence. Hardy Water Lilies, Iris, Umbrella Palms, and Cannas are a few of the plants that provide additional interest and beauty.
On the left side of the yard, there is a bed of whimsical yard art collections. Andrea recently installed a large fountain that she is using to grow her herb garden. The wrought iron bench beside the fountain is the perfect place to sit and smell the aroma of the herbs. The lower section and right side of the back yard is very shady due to a dense canopy of trees. Strategically placed in this area are several different seating arrangements. You can choose to sit and listen to the sounds of the creek from many beautiful vantage points. Enjoy your walk along the winding stone pathways and bridges that connect the putting greens and entertainment spaces, but watch your footing. Andrea and Jorge love to travel to tropical destinations, near water and that usually includes family golfing. It is easy to understand why they were attracted to this yard, which has almost 100 trees on the lot, a variety of water features, 3 putting greens, and multiple chipping holes that add up to 18 holes of golf. It is like having a taste of resort living in the back yard. Their family life is very important, and they try to incorporate quality time together every day. They like to entertain friends or just enjoy the peace and tranquility. They feel blessed to be able to share this lovely outdoor setting for our tour this year. “A home is a place to make fun memories whether it is inside or outside barbecuing, swimming, golfing, or sitting by the fireplace.

Depauw Garden 704 Shorecrest Dr. Serene Water Features As a novice gardener moving to rural Southlake 20 years ago, Angeline found herself in a new home with minimal landscaping, a love of the outdoors, and time on her hands. An ugly privacy fence inspired her to get started with one bed in the back yard. It didn’t take long to pick up the gardening bug, start taking garden design classes, and attend gardening shows. Inspiration from garden shops and shows gave her new ideas and exposed her to new plants. She tackled one new bed a year until she thought she was complete. Laughingly, Angeline now admits that gardeners are never done! Once retired, she finally had the time to take the classes to become a Certified Texas Master Gardener. Though she can count on her husband for some occasional heavy lifting, Angeline does all the planting herself. Spring is her favorite season, when the roses are all in bloom. Her favorite plant is the draught tolerant Salvi Greggi that blooms reliably from March through November. You will find every color in her garden. A trusty weeder is Angeline’s secret weapon to deal with our tenacious Texas weeds. She recommends all gardeners do a soil test (contact your county extension office for instructions) and a sun test (between June 22-August 15th) before getting started. Having that information makes it easier to design a plan and wisely select appropriate plants for any specific garden.
Angeline reminds us that perennials “sleep” their first year, “creep” their second year, and “leap” their third year. Angeline, along with many other Master Gardeners, highly recommend Pamela Crawford and Steve Huddleston’s book, “Easy Gardening for North Central Texas”. As luck would have it, Mr. Huddleston will be speaking at the Miranda
Garden #2 on 1206 Wyndham Hill Lane. Trey Bradley with DFW Ponds will be on hand at the DePauw garden to educate us about pond and water feature design, installation, and maintenance. Check out their website at DFWponds.com. When she began gardening in 1998, Angeline’s goal was to be on the Southlake Garden Tour. Step into the DePauw garden and see her results!

Smith Garden 1225 Bent Creek Dr. Golf Course Beauty Bill and I purchased our home in 1998. We were moving back to Texas from Connecticut, and Bill found it on a house-hunting trip. “I found a house I love,” were his exact words. Little did he know, I had toured it twice when it was the Dillard’s Southern Living Christmas House in 1994, while we were living in Colleyville and I too had fallen in love with it. The rest is history!
Three years ago, Bill decided to try vegetable gardening. He marked off a plot in our backyard, covered it with a tarp so the grass would die, tilled in soil and nutrients, put up a short fence to keep critters out, and planted an array of vegetables. Call it beginners luck, but we had way more than we could eat.
The house had a very nice landscape but needed some organizing. I enlisted the help of my brother-in-law Randy Hardin, who owns Bluebonnet Landscape Creations. In my opinion, a landscape is like the cover
A good friend once told me as I was trying to decide between so many varieties of flowers and plants, “Pick the ones that make you happy, and those will be the right ones.” He was right! Don’t stress too much if a plant choice doesn’t work. If you like it, try it in another location in the garden the next year and plant the flowers that do work again the next season.
of a book – it’s the first impression of a home. Randy helped to organize the shrubs, create pathways in the deeper beds, and carve out areas for seasonal color. I enjoy a more natural look with a mix of perennials and annuals, various heights and textures, lots of color, and planted in a “not too orderly” fashion. We are honored our garden was selected to participate in this year’s garden tour. Neither Bill nor I consider ourselves gardeners. We are 18-year rookies, but we enjoy trips to the nursery to pick out annuals for the flower beds. With three active boys and lots a family in the area, we spend a lot of time in the yard. We just want our yard and home to be a happy place, inside and out.
We hope our garden encourages the rookie gardener in you to plant what makes you happy and that will draw people to enjoy it with you.

En plein air French pronunciation: å plen er, or plain air painting, is a phrase borrowed from the French equivalent meaning “open (in full) air” For the first time in the Southlake Garden Tour’s history each garden will feature an En Plein Air Artist. These artists relish in the open air experience and use all their senses to create wonderful works of art that reflect their surroundings. They will be painting their chosen garden with the medium of their choice during the duration of the tour.

Meisner Garden 401 Palladian Blvd. Outdoor Living Luxury Tina and Jeff Meisner are long time Southlake Residents. After raising two daughters, they found themselves empty nesters and relished the opportunity to downsize to a Villa Style home. Outdoor living and entertainment are paramount for this couple. The gorgeous custom fountain, outdoor kitchen, and spacious outdoor living area are the focal points of this easy to maintain Villa Home lifestyle they desire. “We love living in a Villa.
