The building at 135 W. Twohig has been a long standing historic structure in downtown San Angelo. First constructed as the original Sears and Roebuck building in 1929, the department store opened in 1931. Sears and Roebuck remained at this location until 1934 when the building became Wood Motor Company and Used Cars (Ford Dealership) until about 1941. In 1942, the building housed the Western Wool and Mohair Company. We have not been able to verify how long the Western Wool and Mohair Company operated in this building. Harry Polunsky moved to San Angelo in 1931 after he closed the Menard Wholesale Grocer Company and the Star Cash Grocery. He opened the San Angelo Grocer Company (a wholesale company). He and his cousin Harry Shklar purchased the Piggly Wiggly retail store at 245 S. Chadbourne from Howard E. Butt. The men added a second store at 1310 West Beauregard. The three businessmen became good friends and San Angelo Grocer Company became a supplier for the ÕÌÌ iÀÀÛ i -Ì Ài] Ì i wÀÃÌ ÃÌ Ài Ü >Ì Ü>Ã to become the HEB chain. Due to World War II, multiple Piggly Wiggly stores closed around West Texas with the one store in San Angelo eventually moving to 135 W. Twohig as Harry’s Food Store. Harry’s Food Store operated from 1946 until 1993 at this location. Following its closing, the building sat vacant from 2002 until 2012 when Christians
In Action acquired the building. In 2012, it was purchased by two entrepreneurs who planned to develop a multi-use facility. In 2013 the building was donated to Downtown -> Ƃ }i ] V° Ü Ü À i` Ì w ` > LÕÞer that would restore the building and bring new life to this historic building.
