Confederate general, Marble Falls grew quickly with the construction of a rail yard to transport the unique Sunset Red pink granite from nearby Granite Mountain. The stone moved out across the state to construct the Texas Capitol building, among others in Austin, and Gulf Coast jetties. Completion of Max Starcke Dam in 1951 created Lake Marble Falls and the visage in the narrows of the Colorado River was transformed as the background music of rushing falls submerged. The growing economy evolved from industrial-based granite mining to tourism, commerce and leisure. Today’s city limits extend south all the way to Texas 71, providing utilities to the new Baylor Scott & White (BS&W) Hospital and Wayne

urnet County is the home of rich history and long-told legends dating back to the frontier days following the annexation of Texas to the United States in 1845. Some of it’s recognized landmarks bear witness to its early founders and settlers.

After Texas became a state, federal government became responsible for the protection of settlers from Native American raids. Several companies of Texas Rangers were stationed along the frontier and in December of 1847 a company commanded by Henry E. McCulloch established what became known as McCulloch’s Station, later to be named Fort Croghan, the third of four frontier forts established in the region. The site was
named for Col. George Croghan who was a hero at the battle of Fort Stephenson in the War of 1812. The area along with a creek Ă…V^PUN [OYV\NO [OL HYLH ^HZ commonly called Hamilton or Hamilton Valley for John Hamilton, who had a large plot of land there. The town was founded as Hamilton in 1852, when Burnet County was established. Because another town North of Lampasas was named Hamilton, the new settlement was renamed in

1980. The building changed hands and names in 1926 and 1963, and is currently occupied by a medical clinic. Another well-known historical building in the area is the Badger building. Completed about 1883, this two-story limestone structure is representative of other commercial buildings located on the courthouse square in the 1880s. It was built for local ÄUHUJPLY +Y > / >LZ[MHSS and Captain Brandt Badger. )HKNLY HUK OPZ ZVU >HS[LY operated a wholesale and retail drugstore on the NYV\UK ÅVVY ;OL ZLJVUK ÅVVY HYLH KP]PKLK PU[V Ä]L rooms, was leased for use HZ VɉJL ZWHJLZ )HKNLY sold the business in 1885 and later, in partnership with Adam R. Johnson, helped establish the nearby town of Marble Falls.

For the latter part of the nineteenth century the structure housed a hardware store. In 1903 the newly formed Burnet National Bank was located here and remained at this site until it closed as a result of the economic depression of the 1930s. The Badger building has also been used by the State Parks Board, the Burnet Rural Telephone Company, the Farm Loan Association, doctors, lawyers, and various businesses. From 1948 to 1959 it served as the )\YUL[ 7VZ[ 6ɉJL 0U the structure was occupied by the Youth And Community Center. The Llano C o u n t y Historical Museum is located on the banks of the Llano River, just north of the Roy B. Inks Bridge. A pioneer cabin on its grounds adds to exhibits inside. Parade, Walkway of Lights ushers in holiday season in Marble Falls Lakeside Park in Marble Falls shines nearly as bright as the Las Vegas strip during the Christmas season when the Marble Falls/Lake LBJ Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual Christmas Light-Up Parade and Walkway of Lights. The event begins at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, with the parade down Historic Main Street. Entries will line up from Johnson Park to Fifth Street before beginning their journey to Yett Street. Festivities then move to Lakeside Park, where some 230 sculptures are cast in more than two million lights, creating a spectacular display of light and holiday spirit that is open to visitors from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. nightly through New Year’s Day,
weather permitting. Visitors are encouraged to get a cup of hot cocoa, have their photo taken with Santa and stroll through the lights with friends and family. Because this is an outdoor event, if the ground is wet, the Walkway will not be opened as it creates a safety hazard. For updates on the Walkway’s status, call 844-635-4448.
